Leaders from the 86th Force Support Squadron celebrated the opening of a new Family Child Care home during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 4, expanding child care options for the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
The new FCC home, operated by child care provider Maria Hamilton, adds to the installation’s network of in-home child care programs designed to support families who need flexible and developmentally appropriate care in a home setting.
“The opening of this FCC home is significant because it expands access to high-quality child care for military families within our community,” said Marisol Miranda, 86th FSS Family Child Care coordinator. “FCC homes play a critical role by providing families with reliable, flexible and developmentally appropriate care in a nurturing home environment.”

Outgoing 86 AW executive director earns award for US-German community building
The outgoing 86th Airlift Wing executive director was presented with the “Welcome to RheinlandPfalz! Our neighbors from the USA” appreciation award for achievements in strengthening relationships between U.S. military and German Allies on Jan. 21. Renae Fischer, who has served at Ramstein for six years, was present-
ed with the award, which signifies a devoted commitment to fostering mutual understanding, participation in community life and longterm strengthening of relationships within the region.
“Receiving this award is one the highlights of my time at Ramstein,” Fischer said. “Good community relationships at the leadership-level are critical to the Global Gateway mission and the quality of life for over 50,000 Airmen, Soldiers and civilians that
live in local communities.”
WiR! is a German state-level program and was initiated in 2014 by the Ministry of the Interior and Sports of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is also an official partner of the German-American Community Office in Kaiserslautern. The program aims to promote an open and active German-American community in villages close to U.S. military installations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
“This is the largest commu-
nity of Americans outside of the continental United States,” Fischer said. “When we have things like the German-American Community Office, and other engagement opportunities, it helps our Airmen and Soldiers acclimate to the local community.”
Together with 42 communities and societal organizations, the 86th AW has supported the transition for U.S. service members and their families as they adapt to German culture and lifestyle.
“We had the honor of recognizing Renae Fischer for her outstanding contributions to the German-American community in Rheinland-Pfalz,” said John Constance, WiR! program manager. “Since 2019, Renae has enabled meaningful projects and fostered a genuine sense of community. Her openness, commitment and enthusiasm for life in Germany have been truly inspiring throughout the years we worked together.”

FCC is an alternative to the Child Development Center and offers care in licensed homes operated by providers working under their own contracts with families. Providers operate on Ramstein and Vogelweh as well as in surrounding villages through affiliated programs.
Before opening her home, Hamilton completed all required background checks, documentation and inspections. She attended various orientations and training courses including CPR, first aid, child development, nutrition, child abuse detection and prevention and U.S. Air Force standards. Her home passed safety, fire and public health inspections to ensure it met FCC guidelines for quality care.
This milestone helps meet the growing demand for child care within the community and reflects the U.S. Air Force’s continued commitment to supporting military families. The addition also strengthens the FCC program by offering relationship-based care in a setting to help children learn, grow and thrive. The program now boasts a total of 16 FCC homes in the KMC.
“When families have dependable care, it reduces stress, minimizes work disruptions and strengthens overall unit readiness,” said Caitlyn Wash, 86th FSS community child care coordinator. “It also enhances quality of life by providing families with more child care options that support children’s development and promote positive early learning experiences.”
Opening the FCC home allows Hamilton to focus on individualized care while building strong relationships with children and families.
“My FCC home is not just a place for care, but a place where routines provide stability and children are supported in reaching important developmental milestones,” Hamilton said.
Individuals interested in becoming a Family Child Care provider can learn about licensing requirements, training, and home inspections by visiting the FCC office or online at[ https://dafchildandyouth.com/ become-fcc-provider/](https:// dafchildandyouth.com/become-fccprovider/).

Public Health Command Europe entomology team inspires young learners at Ramstein Elementary School
More than 400 students at Ramstein Elementary School recently received a hands-on lesson in science thanks to volunteers from Public Health Command Europe.
Over the course of one week, entomologist Captain Jordan Cornell and Preventive Medicine Sergeant Devin Gay spent Monday and Wednesday mornings visiting first- and second-grade classrooms, introducing students to the life cycle of insects and the role entomology plays in public health. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, Cornell and Gay explained what defines an insect, what insects do in the environment and why understanding them matters.
For many students, the highlight of the visit came when the team brought live cockroaches to the classroom. Students were given the opportunity to observe and touch the insects if they wished. The experience sparked excitement, curiosity, and plenty of questions.
“The kids truly enjoyed it,” Cornell said. “I’m always amazed by the questions children ask. They’re curious, engaged, and genuinely excited to learn. Seeing that enthusiasm, especially when they discover they share a passion for bugs, is incredibly rewarding.”
The visit also gave students a rare opportunity to meet a subject matter expert from Public Health Command Europe. In addition
to teaching about insects, Capt. Cornell spoke about his profession and how entomology supports public health by helping prevent the spread of insect-borne diseases.
Teachers at Ramstein Elementary School welcomed the opportunity. Beatrice Whitely, a teacher at the school, said both staff and students had been eagerly anticipating the visit.
“We were all very much looking forward to this experience,” she said. “Students were able to relate to Capt. Cornell’s presentation about insects and the types of life cycles as they have studied life science as part of the curriculum.”
Students echoed that excitement. Olivia, a second grader who participated in the lesson, said she loved learning about insects, even if some of them were a little unset-
tling. “It was so cool to learn about bugs,” she said. “The cockroaches were huge and kind of creepy, but I hope they come back soon.”
The entomology team volunteered their time to reach more than 400 children during the week, reinforcing lessons they had already begun in the classroom and expanding their understanding through real-world examples.
Looking ahead, Cornell is working toward establishing a more robust volunteer partnership between Public Health Command Europe and Ramstein Elementary School. His goal is to eventually invite students to visit the laboratory and entomology department, allowing them to see firsthand how insects are studied and how that work supports the health and safety of the military community.

725 AMS AGE technicians ensure mission success
512th Field Hospital conducts a field training exercise
by Staff Sgt. Joshua Crossman and 1st Lt. Nathan Roe
521st Air Mobility Operations Wing
Every squadron in the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing has aerial porters or aircraft maintainers to support the movement of U.S. Transportation Command passengers and cargo into the European theater. Some squadrons have additional capabilities to address the needs of the installation and the needs of the Wing.
The 725th Air Mobility Squadron, stationed at Naval Station Rota, Spain, has one of those unique capabilities, their Aerospace Ground Equipment section. AGE maintains the power carts, maintenance stands, and tow bars that are necessary to support aircraft on the ground as they pass through the installation. AGE, like the aircraft it supports, requires routine maintenance to ensure it is functioning properly.
Not only does the 725th AMS support AGE at NAVSTA Rota, they also support AGE at five other operating locations within the 521st AMOW.
“Our mission in Souda Bay relies on the readiness of AGE to keep operations moving without delay,” said Staff Sgt. Drennon Hausman, a 725th AMS AGE technician. “Every piece of AGE is a force multiplier, ensuring aircraft can launch on time, crews can work
safely, and the mission never loses momentum. In this environment, reliability isn’t just preferred, it’s essential.”
The 725th AMS has the only inhouse AGE technicians within the 521st AMOW who are responsible for ensuring the equipment is in good working order. A responsibility which is typically taken on by the host installation. However, the 725th AMS faces a unique challenge in that they are stationed on a U.S. Navy installation which does not have organic AGE capabilities.
“Back when I was flying the KC-135 we stopped in NSA Souda Bay during a trip to the Middle East,” said Lt. Col. Bradlee Seehawer, 725th AMS commander. “I had no idea that the AGE was being provided by a squadron halfway across the continent. Now that I’m part of the 725th AMS team, I’m proud of how we are uniquely capable of supporting the full gamut of Rapid Global Mobility. Our world-class C-5 and C-17 maintainers keep airlift flying through Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, but we’re just as likely to be providing support to the air refueling mission, too, as they ferry fighters into theater and back home.”
The other operating locations the 725th AMS provides AGE support at is Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, Naval Support Activity Bahrain, Cairo International Airport, Egypt, and Ben Gurion Airport, Israel.

USAFA graduate named Cadet of the Year
by Airman 1st Class Kaleb Tewes 81st Training Wing Public Affairs
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach presented 2nd Lt. Renata Russell, a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, with the Cadet of the Year award during a ceremony at the Pentagon, Jan. 30.
Russell was selected from nearly 5,000 cadets commissioned into the Air Force nationwide.
“To be quite honest, I was shocked,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting anything at all.”
Russell, now an undergraduate cyber warfare training student at the 333rd Training Squadron at Keesler Air Force Base, was the top cadet among graduates from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Officer Training School, and Reserve Officer Training Corps.
“As an Academy cadet, Lt. Russell’s achievements stood out among her distinguished peers,” Wilsbach said. “This award recognizes not only what she has accomplished, but the leader she is becoming. We are counting on officers like her to lead our Air Force into the future.”
While at the Academy, Russell served as Cadet Wing chief of staff, the third-highest position in the cadet command structure. In this role, she pushed for change and organized the first-ever Military Service Academy Leadership Summit, which focused on the strategic development of 40 officers and cadets from across all branches.
As Basic Training Flight commander, Russell trained 27 recruits and streamlined programs for over 1,000 cadets, all while balancing

academics and physical fitness.
“I 100 percent could not have gotten here alone,” Russell said.
“I'm a product of all the people who invested so much in me. Any recognition that I receive is really a recognition of how much they've helped me grow.”
She credited the community of excellence her upperclassmen created during her freshman year for setting a high standard she was eager to uphold. This commitment to excellence was evident not only in her military performance but also in her academics.
Russell chose to pursue a dual
major in electrical and computer engineering and mathematics, taking a 30 percent heavier course load than her peers. She maintained a 4.0 GPA in both majors earning her Dean’s List honors and an academic ranking of sixth out of 938 cadets.
Russell also earned a spot in the Cadet Wing Championship, competing against 39 other teams and finishing second overall out of 938 cadets.
Russell emphasized that the support from her mentors, instructors and peers provided her with a clear path to being the best cadet she could be. This guidance motivated
her to set a high standard for her lowerclassmen in her later years at the academy.
“You shouldn’t just meet the threshold of the standard, you’re supposed to push yourself to excellence,” Russell said.
Upon completing cyber warfare training, Russell will move on to her next assignment, where she will apply her skills and take on new challenges.
“USAFA challenges you in many ways: academically, physically, mentally, emotionally and you learn that you just need to be present in each moment and give the
thing that’s in front of you your best,” Russell said. “If you take that moment by moment, day to day approach, over the span of 4 years, you can look back and you can really appreciate how far you’ve come.”

ABC IN KMC: Winter Olympics
Icy sports and creamy gelato at Cortina d’Ampezzo
Plenty is happening in Cortina d’Ampezzo, and the action continues through Feb. 22 as the 2026 Winter Olympics unfold.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, perched at about 1,224 m (4,016 ft) in the Italian Dolomites (Province of Belluno, Veneto), is nicknamed the “Queen of the Dolomites” for its dramatic limestone peaks, world-class skiing, luxury tourism, and enduring Olympic legacy.
Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and returns as a co-host for Milano-Cortina 2026. Its 1956 venues and long Olympic tradition helped secure a place in the new Games. The 2026 Milano-Cortina Games run Feb 4 (first competitions) — Feb 22 (closing ceremony) and the official Opening Ceremony took place Feb 6 in Milano. Ninety-three nations are participating with over 3,000 athletes.
Cool runnings and Eddie the Eagle
The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924, originally organized as “Winter Sports Week” and retroactively recognized as the first Olympic Winter Games. Sixteen nations competed over 10 days. The IOC and winter-sport federations created a separate international festival for snow and ice sports after 1924, and the Winter Olympics have continued as a distinct, permanent series ever since.
Germany has also been host of the winter Games. Games took place in GarmischPartenkirchen in 1936. Twenty-eight nations and roughly 669 athletes competed for the gold, silver and bronze medals in 17 events in eight disciplines, when Alpine skiing was first introduced as a discipline.
On the other hand, the United States has hosted the Winter Olympics four times: Lake Placid in 1932 and 1980, Squaw Valley in
1960, and Salt Lake City in 2002.
Canada has been host to the Winter Olympics two times: in Vancouver in 2010 and earlier in 1988 in Calgary. Elderly readers may recall a fearless athlete and a remarkable tropical team to compete in winter games.
“Eddie the Eagle” was a determined British ski jumper who became a global sensation at the 1988 Winter Olympics for finishing last but doing it with unforgettable heart and humor. He arrived with limited funding, borrowed equipment, and famously thick glasses that fogged inside his goggles, but despite all odds even managed to set a British ski jumping record!
The Jamaican bobsled team also made history, first bursting onto the world stage at the Calgary Games and inspiring the film “Cool Runnings.” A crash in one of their runs prevented them from finishing, but they walked the sled across the line, an unforgettable moment!
Their debut, struggles, and long-term impact have made them a lasting symbol of determination. One of the most famous sayings associated with the Olympic spirit is “The important thing is taking part” and captures the idea that participation matters more than victory, effort and sportsmanship outweigh medals.
Bronze, silver and gold
This year the Winter Olympics include 116 medal events across eight sports and 16 disciplines: Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country, curling, figure skating, freestyle, ice hockey, luge, Nordic combined, short track, skeleton, ski jumping, ski mountaineering, snowboard and speed skating.
The German team consists of remarkable 184 athletes in 15 disciplines, with three of them from Rheinland-Pfalz. Team USA

Gelato artigianale
Cortina d’Ampezzo is not only famous for being an upscale alpine resort known for world-class skiing, but also renowned for being the “birthplace” of “gelato artigianale” (handmade gelato) using fresh, local
ingredients and recipes adapted for alpine tastes and the town promotes gelato as part of its food culture.
The Gelato-Day festival “Gelato-Day Cortina-Dolomiti” is an annual event in held in August that showcases regional gelato makers and has included novelty presentations such as gelato served at very high altitudes.
Cortina’s gelato makers have a long, documented connection to Germany. Families and artisan gelato businesses from the Dolomites (including Cortina and nearby valleys) emigrated to Germany in the 1950’s and 1960’s and established Eiscafés that still trade under Italian names like “Cortina,” keeping an uninterrupted artisanal tradition alive in German towns.
At just 17 years old, Dario Fontanella, the son of an Italian immigrant from the region, came up with the coolest idea of his life. On April 6, 1969, in Mannheim, he served the very first plate of his whimsical creation: spaghetti ice cream. Soft vanilla gelato pressed into noodle-like strands, drizzled with raspberry “tomato” sauce, sprinkled with white chocolate and finished with a dab of whipped cream. Sadly for Dario, he never patented his delicious invention, and it soon became a beloved treat enjoyed across Germany.
Let’s celebrate the incredible athletes and their “icy” sports representing the United States, Germany, and countless nations across the globe, honoring their dedication and sportsmanship. The Games stand as a powerful symbol of unity, perseverance, and the competitive spirit, bringing together the five continents and athletes from every corner of the world. And honestly, it’s all even better with a bowl of creamy gelato while cheering them on from the comfort of the couch!

86 Airlift Wing 2025 Year-in-Review
by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
As national strategy evolved under the new administration, the 86th Airlift Wing continued to conduct airlift and support missions throughout Europe, Africa and beyond. In 2025, numerous leadership transitions across the Department of War occurred. Additionally, a U.S. government shutdown created budget uncertainty and resulted in the furlough of civilian personnel. Yet, in the face of these changes and challenges, the Airmen of the 86th AW answered every call. They projected decisive airpower, honed their combat edge alongside international partners, and fostered community at every level.
This 2025 year-in-review chronicles the 86th Airlift Wing’s activities through a period of significant change, detailing how the wing adapted its operations to leadership transitions and budgetary constraints, ensuring the continuity of its global airlift and support missions.
A Year of Strategic Transition and Internal Tests
The strategic landscape of 2025 was defined by significant political change. Following the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump on Jan. 20, the wing adapted to federal reforms and leadership changes, including new appointments for the Secretary of War, Secretary of the Air Force, and commanders at U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa.
A 44-day U.S. government shutdown occurred from Oct. 1 to Nov. 13, resulting in the furlough of hundreds of civilian employees. During the shutdown, official agencies like the Military & Family Readiness Center provided support services, and community members organized food drives for affected personnel. Despite the furlough, the wing continued to conduct its primary operations.
Combat Operations and Global Airlift
• Support to Central Command operations: The wing’s airlift capabilities were demonstrated in June during a period that saw critical operations in the CENTCOM
area of responsibility. Pilots, loadmasters, and flying crew chiefs from the 37th Airlift Squadron and 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron deployed to the region. These Airmen delivered reliable airlift capability and enabled the safe movement of U.S. assets and personnel in support of national security requirements. In recognition of their courage and valor, the deployed Airmen earned the prestigious Department of the Air Force Gallant Unit Citation.
• Maximum Generation Events: Twice during the year, the 86th AW executed “MAXGEN” events, generating and launching the majority of its C-130J Super Hercules, C-21, and C-37 fleet on short notice. These exercises highlighted the wing’s rapid global mobility capabilities and proved its readiness to respond to any contingency.
The Strategic Air Bridge: Geographically Separated Unit Highlights
• Chièvres Air Base, Belgium: The 424th Air Base Squadron demonstrated its importance as both a key NATO support hub and a forward staging base for exercises like Agile
Bison 25-1. While fulfilling its primary mission of supporting Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, the base also completed a multi-year network modernization and hosted its first Industry Day, strengthening local partnerships.
• Lajes Field, Portugal: The 65th Air Base Group reaffirmed its role as a vital transatlantic air bridge, providing critical refueling support and ability to receive 12 refuelers from 5 separate units in less than 24 hours and subsequently execute multiple sorites over the span of 72 hours. A major focus was the expansion of support for the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon fleet, underscored by the initiation of an $11.4 million infrastructure project to construct upgraded facilities for the maritime patrol mission.
• Morón Air Base, Spain: The 496th Air Base Squadron served as a strategic gateway to Africa and the Middle East, enabling the seamless flow of combat power during surge operations. A key infrastructure project for the year was the complete overhaul of the aircraft arresting system, ensuring the airfield's readiness to support transient
tactical aircraft and tenant units like the U.S. Marines.
Sharpening the Edge: Exercises, Training, and Modernization
The 86th AW and its tenant units participated in a demanding series of exercises, including NATO Tiger Meet, Exercise Falcon Strike, African Lion, and the Operation Varsity series. Ramstein was also a key test site for the DAF-level Energy Resilience Readiness Exercise. The principles of Agile Combat Employment were central to the year’s training, honing the wing’s ability to operate from austere locations. Readiness was a constant focus for the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, which engaged in multiple joint medical evacuation exercises. Furthermore, the wing advanced its base defense capabilities by further developing its counterunmanned aerial systems program.
Sustainment and Logistics
The wing’s maintenance and logistics enterprise persevered through significant challenges. A noteworthy achievement was the resolution of a multi-year maintenance saga involving C-130, tail number A5736, which finally received its replacement wings and was sent to depot. This success was a testament to the persistence of maintainers who adapted to severe global supply chain disruptions. Across the theater, logistics personnel remained focused on the “set the theater” vision, managing ongoing munitions support and expanding USAFE’s War Reserve Materiel stockpiles.
Community, Commemoration, and Distinguished Visitors
The 86th AW upheld its solemn duties and strengthened community bonds throughout 2025. Ramstein assisted with two dignified transfers, to return America’s fallen to their loved ones as quickly as possible. The wing also commemorated the 81st anniversary of D-Day and the 80th anniversary of V-E Day through flyovers across Europe. In April, the wing hosted U.S. Vice President JD Vance during his first visit to Ramstein Air Base since taking office for a toast to the troops event with U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army service members. The 61st Annual Ramstein Bazaar and Freedom Fest open house strengthened host nation relationships and celebrated the enduring connections across the Kaiserslautern Military Community.
Conclusion
The challenges of 2025, from geopolitical shifts and combat deployments to internal disruptions, forged a more resilient and adaptable 86th Airlift Wing. Across every group and squadron, at every installation, Airmen met uncertainty with professionalism and executed the mission with unwavering dedication. As this historical record shows, the trials of 2025 did not diminish the wing’s readiness; they sharpened it. The 86th Airlift Wing moves forward, tested and proven, ready to meet the demands of the future, whatever they may be.

The United States Army World Class Athlete Program will be wellrepresented in the 2026 Winter Olympics from Feb. 6-22 in MilanCortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
Six Soldier-Athletes — Staff Sgt. Deedra Irwin, Spc. Sean Doherty, Sgt. Frank Del Duca, Spc. Azaria Hill, Sgt. Ben Loomis, and Pvt. Spencer Howe — will go for the gold in the biathlon, bobsled, Nordic combined and pair figure skating.
Cpl. Hakeem Abdul-Saboor and Spc. Dana Kellogg were named alternates in the bobsled and luge doubles, respectively, and Lt. Col. Chris Fogt, Lt. Col. Garrett Hines and Sgt. 1st Class Shauna Rohbock will coach Team USA in the bobsled.
The biathletes will compete in the Antholz-Anterselva Biathlon Arena; the bobsledders will compete at the Cortina Sliding Centre; Nordic Combined will compete at the Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium and
Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium; and figure skating will compete at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.
Biathlon
Irwin skied and shot her way to a seventh-place finish — the highest U.S. finish in biathlon history — in the women’s 15-kilometer individual biathlon during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She finished in 44 minutes, 44.1 seconds and hit 19 of 20 targets.
And Irwin is aiming higher in her second Olympics. She has a chance to compete in as many as six events — the mixed relay, individual, sprint, pursuit, women’s relay and mass start. She must qualify for the pursuit and mass start.
“If you look at my last Olympics, I was unranked, and if I had shot 20 of 20, I would have medaled,” said Irwin, a member of the Vermont National Guard whose military occupation specialty is 42A, human resource specialist.
“So, the chances are there. It depends on shooting and skiing that
day — and on what everyone else does.”
Irwin enlisted in the Army in 2019 and competed for the National Guard Biathlon Team in the 2022 Games before joining WCAP in 2023. While she speaks fondly about her time with the National Guard Biathlon Team, the consistency of support from WCAP has been a difference-maker in her athletic and
military career.
“With WCAP, I have full-time orders, full-time benefits and direct access to resources such as nutritional support,” Irwin said. “Being both a platoon sergeant and an athlete have pushed me to learn a lot, from managing my time, mentoring teammates, handling temporary duty paperwork and helping athletes travel internationally. My guard unit will probably put me somewhere in the headquarters because I’ll know how to do a lot of random but useful things.”
Doherty, also a member of the Vermont National Guard, joins an elite club by qualifying for his fourth Olympic team. He qualified for the 2014 Sochi Olympics as an 18-yearold and enlisted in the Army in 2018, where he’s a 12W, carpentry and masonry specialist. Now 30, he said he still tries to keep that 18-year-old mindset.
“That attitude was powerful and fun, and I try to keep some of that alive,” said Doherty, who joined WCAP after the 2022 Beijing Games. “I enjoy talking with younger teammates and sharing experiences.”
WCAP Soldier-Athlete Sgt. Frank Del Duca named to second Olympic bobsled team Sgt. Frank Del Duca, a Soldier-Athlete with the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, leads from the front in the four-man bobsled race at the IBSF World Cup/European Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Jan. 11. Del Duca was named to his second Olympic team on Jan. 19.

And the experiences he’s had with WCAP continue to shape his athletic and military career.
“WCAP supports you not just as an athlete, but as a person and a Soldier,” Doherty said. “They care about my athletic performance, but they also care about my development as a whole person, and I’m grateful for that. The options and stability are valuable and adds another dimension to my life and career.”
Like Irwin, Doherty could compete in six events.
Bobsled
Del Duca, a pilot for the twoman and four-man teams, joined WCAP shortly after enlisting in the Army in 2019, and it has been critical in his development not just as a Soldier-Athlete, but also as a person.
“I’ve learned so much about leadership, team building, accountability, setting standards, scheduling, punctuality — big things and small things that matter when you’re part of a group working toward a common goal,” said Del Duca, a former sprinter at the University of Maine who competed in the 2022 Beijing Games. “It’s made me a more complete Soldier, athlete, father and husband, and I’m performing at a higher level because of the skills and examples
I’ve gained.”
Del Duca and his brakeman, Josh Williamson, are ranked fourth in the world in the two-man bobsled going into the 2026 Games. While the United States has been behind the German racers, Del Duca is excited and motivated.
“When the cameras and lights are on, I find another gear,” said Del Duca, an 11B, Infantryman. “I push better and focus harder because the competition demands it. There are so many great teams, and everyone has to have their best day.”
Hill continues a family tradition of Olympians. Her father, former professional boxer Virgil Hill, was a silver medalist in the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and her mother, sprinter Denean Howard-Hill, won a gold medal in 1984 and silver medals in 1988 and 1992 as a member of the 1,600-relay team.
Hill was a sprinter in college at Long Beach State and UNLV before enlisting in the Army in 2024 and becoming one of Team USA bobsled’s top brakewomen for the twowoman bobsled.
“My parents are super excited to experience this from the other side,” said Hill, whose an 88M, motor transport operator. “They’re happy. Making the team is the result of all the hard work I’ve put in with my coaches.”
The coaches — Fogt, Hines and Rohbock — have been essential in perfecting technique and developing a proper mindset, Hill said.
“We do constant video review, analyze numbers and data — and the data doesn’t lie,” Hill said. “Their experience as former competitors has been extremely helpful.”
The resources WCAP provides have benefited Hill’s athletic and professional career.
“It provides resources, such as going back to school to obtain my master’s and helping to become an officer,” she said. “We work on all aspects of ourselves, not just athletics. They make sure we stay on top of classes and training, even overseas. They push us to grow professionally and athletically.”
Nordic Combined
Loomis, a member of the Utah National Guard competing in his third Olympics, enlisted in the Army in 2019 with the sole intention of joining WCAP, but his attitude and desire to serve has changed significantly.
“It has been such as positive experience — the National Guard, WCAP and the Army as a whole,” said Loomis, a motor transport operator. “Now I want to stay in after my athletic career, maybe even for a full career. My reasons for joining and my reasons for staying are completely different now.”
As a Nordic Combined athlete, Loomis is either flying as a ski
jumper or he’s racing on the ground as a cross-country skier. Ski jumping is quick, powerful and detail-based, while crosscountry skiing requires endurance, strength and car diovascu lar fitness. Finding the perfect balance to excel in both disciplines is a lifelong challenge, and that’s what makes it exciting for Loomis.
“I push better and focus harder because the competition demands it. There are so many great teams, and everyone has to have their best day.”
Sgt. Frank Del Duca
More importantly, the training to excel in both carries over to his military duties.
“Being an athlete and a Soldier go hand in hand,” Loomis said.
“What I’ve learned in the military has helped my athletic career, and my athletic background has helped me as a Soldier. WCAP provides incredible resources — nutrition, mental health support, travel funding and a full team behind us. These sports can be financially difficult, so WCAP removes a lot of that burden and allows me to focus on competing while continuing my military career.”
Pairs Figure Skating Howe, who aspires to be an Army chaplain, saw God working in mysterious ways during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 4-11 in St. Louis.
Howe and his partner, Emily Chan, secured their first Olympic berths despite placing eighth in the short program. Howe said they needed a miracle to qualify for the 2026 Games.
Prayers were answered in the form of a third-place finish in the free skate program.
“The roller coaster of the trials really opened my eyes,” said
Howe, motor transport operator. “Looking back at how the competition unfolded and how we were ultimately named to the team, we’re grateful and honored. Now we want to do our best representing the Army and the United States.”
Howe enlisted in the Army in February 2025 and joined WCAP shortly thereafter. Completing basic and advanced individual training interfered skating with Chan, but the training helped shape him, Howe said.
“I learned new skills, and when I returned to the ice in June, I brought those skills with me,” Howe said. “I started looking at skating from a Soldier’s perspective and not just an athlete. Taking on the responsibility to compete at the highest level — not just for Team USA but also for the Army — is a different level of commitment. Working with my partner Emily every day isn’t just a job; it feels like a duty. Approaching training with that mindset has changed how I work and helped me excel.”
The mindset is allowing him to take advantage of the opportunities offered through the Army and WCAP.
“I’ve even started school to continue my education and eventually join the Chaplain Corps,” Howe said. “Once I finish my undergraduate degree, I can join the Chaplain Candidate Program, which will phase me into becoming a chaplain once I finish my master’s of divinity degree.”

CROSSWORD
SMOKING IN CARS
by German-American Community Office
Dear travel enthusiasts, Spring is slowly, but surely sneaking around the corner and you may start making travel plans. Therefore, we would like to familiarize you with traffic laws in Germany and abroad in the upcoming weeks.
This information cannot be exhaustive, as it can vary from country to country. We would like to draw your attention to a few regulations and possible penalties. Please familiarize yourself with the traffic regulations of the country you wish to visit. Ignorance of the law is no defense.
SMOKING BAN IN CARS IN SOME EUROPEAN COUNTRIES
In several European countries, smoking is prohibited in cars. Violations are sometimes punished with heavy fines.
The smoking ban serves to protect minors.
There are some exceptions for convertibles.
In some countries, a corre-
sponding ban is being discussed. In some Scandinavian countries, as well as in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland, the introduction of a smoking ban in cars is being discussed.
Belgium: Smoking, also e-cigarettes, is prohibited in cars if people under the age of 18 are in the vehicle. Violation fines start at €130. An exception applies to convertibles.
England and Wales: Smoking is prohibited in vehicles if people under the age of 18 are in the car. Violation fines start at £50 (approx. €58). Exception made for convertibles. E-cigarettes are not covered by the ban. The fine must be paid by the driver and smoker.
Finland: Smoking is prohibited in cars if children under the age of 15 are in the vehicle. The ban also applies to e-cigarettes.
France: Smoking, also e-cigarettes, in cars is prohibited if people under the age of 18 are in the vehicle. Violations are usually punished with a fine of €135.
Greece: Smoking, also e-cigarettes, is prohibited in cars if children under the age of 12 are in the
vehicle. Violations are punishable by a fine of up to €1,500.
Ireland: In Ireland, smoking is prohibited in a car if a person under the age of 18 is in the vehicle. Violations are punishable by a fine of €100 or more. The ban does not apply to e-cigarettes.
Italy: Smoking in cars is banned when pregnant women or minors are present. Fines range from €50 to €500 for smoking with pregnant women or children under 12, and €25 to €250 for passengers aged 12 to 17. The ban does not apply to e-cigarettes.
Norway: In Norway, smoking, also e-cigarettes, is prohibited in cars if people under the age of 18 are on board. Violations are punishable by a fine of NOK 3,500 (approx. €300).
Luxembourg: Smoking is prohibited in private cars when children under the age of 12 are in the vehicle. The ban also applies to e-cigarettes. Violation fines range from €25 to €250.
Austria: Smoking, also e-cigarettes, is prohibited in cars if at least one person under the age of 18 is present. Violation fines are
possible up to €100, or up to €1,000 in the case of repeat offenses.
Slovenia: In Slovenia, smoking is prohibited in cars in the presence of persons under the age of 18. The ban also applies to e-cigarettes. Violations are punishable by a fine of €250.
Scotland: In Scotland, smoking is prohibited in cars if persons under the age of 18 are on board. Anyone violating this rule may face a fine of £100 (approx. €115). E-cigarettes are not prohibited.
Czech Republic: No general ban on smoking in cars. However, smoking is prohibited on all single-track vehicles. Motorcyclists, moped riders, and cyclists must not smoke while riding. Fines are CZK 1,500 (approx. €60).
Cyprus: Smoking, also e-cigarettes, is prohibited if minors under the age of 16 are in the car. Violations can cost up to 85 euros.
Switzerland: There’s no specific ban on this if road safety isn’t affected. However, major distractions — such as taking too long to light a cigarette — can be fined as a breach of the duty of care.
Caution: Falling cigarette:
A dropped cigarette in a car can be dangerous. Anyone who bends down to pick up a burning cigarette loses focus on the road, which can quickly cause an accident. Insurances view this as gross negligence, meaning drivers may have to cover the damage themselves.
Throwing cigarette butts out of the window: Anyone throwing a cigarette out of their car is not only polluting the environment but may also face a fine of between €20 and €50.
This careless act can have serious consequences. If a cigarette is blown into a motorcyclist’s visor, they may be startled, crash, and get injured, making the smoker liable for negligent bodily injury. Flicking a cigarette out of a car window can even spark a forest fire.
easier to navigate than Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The city has brilliant restaurants, bars, museums, shops, and even a rubber ducky store. Even better: it’s just across the German border!
Maastricht underground (literally)
One of the coolest — and most unique — experiences in Maastricht is hidden from sight. The Maastricht Underground, which is accessible from the imposing Fort Sint Pieter, offers a real-life labyrinth beneath the city.
And it truly is a labyrinth. There are no lights. It contains tens of thousands of passages, and anyone who tries to go in without a guide (which is not legal, so don’t do it) will likely become so lost that they wouldn’t survive (which has happened). Thankfully, guided tours in English are available. They begin at Fort Sint Pieter, and can be booked ahead of time.
The tour, which lasts about an hour, is well worth it. Some of the passages are decorated with amazing drawings, and visitors learn about the history of the amazing complex. Impressively, the Nazis never cracked the secrets of the Underground during World War II, and the tunnels were used to shuttle people to safety for years. Once you’re inside, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you become disoriented, and how grateful you are to have a guide.
Explore the city center
Exploring the city center on foot or by bike is the perfect way to see Maastricht. Begin in the Market Square, which is home to Maastricht’s centuries-old city hall. On
Saturdays, there are fantastic flea markets there, as well.
Then, you can wander in almost any direction and be charmed. The city has so many fabulous shops (the rubber ducky store is almost as cool as the Dominican Bookstore, which is located inside an old church) that you really can’t go wrong. There is also the Mosae Forum, which is a beautiful covered shopping center, next to the Market Square, that also houses the aptly named Museum of Illusions.
As you near the river, you’ll be amazed at the variety of restaurants and pubs. Walk for a while. Then stop, have a refreshment, and watch the world float past.
St. Servatius Basilica
Speaking of wonders in the city center, the Basilica of St. Servatius is a must. Nestled between three lovely squares (Vrijthof square, Keizer Karelplein, and Henric van Veldekeplein) in the historic center of Maastricht, it’s the oldest standing church in the Netherlands: there’s been a church on this site for more than 1,400 years.
The basilica is built in a Romanesque style, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also supposedly built upon the grave of St. Servatius, who was a 4th century bishop in nearby Tongeren, and contains his remains. Guided tours in English are available.
Secrets of the Sphinx Quarter
Maastricht’s Sphinxkwartier (Sphinx Quarter) is well worth a visit, too. This innovative, industrial neighborhood is
located in the lesser-known old factory district near the Maas River. It’s considered one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city, thanks to the blend of new and old.
While you’re there, you can certainly find great restaurants and pubs. Visitors can also catch a movie in an old power plant at the Lumiere Cinema, sleep in a refurbished factory at The Student Hotel,
or check out the Sphinxpassage, a long, tiled corridor that tells the story of how the Quarter came to be.
Getting there
By car, Maastricht is approximately 3 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.
