The scholarship funds can be used for equipment, camps, travel and other expenses related to students’ development in their chosen sport.

“This award is fittingly named ‘Chasing the Dream’ because it provides a financial boost that helps youth and families overcome obstacles and make the most of their talents in support of their goals and, of course, chasing dreams,” Flynn said.

Flynn noted that the Baumholder center has had a student win the scholarship every year for more than a decade.

“That’s thousands of dollars supporting our families and communities. Some scholars have even gone on to chase their dream at the collegiate level,” he said.

Application packages are available each fall.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz sets, serves, and secures the total force community, enabling power projection for the European Theater.

Two students from U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s Baumholder Youth Program have each received $1,500 scholarships from the Hank Aaron ‘Chasing the Dream’ Foundation.

The recipients, Jaiden H. and Yadriel A., are both multi-sport athletes involved in football, basketball and soccer, according to Ryan Flynn, the Youth Programs director at Baumholder Child and Youth Services.

“Receiving this basketball grant is an honor and an opportunity to continue developing as both an athlete and as a leader,” said Jaiden H., scholarship recipient.

Flynn said the scholarship funds can be used for equipment, camps, travel and other expenses related to the students’ development in basketball and soccer.

The foundation awards 40 scholarships annually to members of Boys & Girls Clubs of America-affiliated youth centers. According to Flynn, the application process requires essays, community and teacher recommen-

86 AW Airmen awarded Gallant Unit Citation

by Senior Airman Brenden Beezley 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Eighteen Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing who deployed in support of the 40th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron received the Gallant Unit Citation Dec. 5, for their role in the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing’s combat operations from April 2 to Oct. 6.

The 386th AEW was awarded the citation for its support during a period that saw critical operations including Operations ROUGH RIDER and MIDNIGHT HAMMER. The 386th served as the primary airlift hub and gateway for delivering combat power to joint and coalition forces in the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility.

As part of that effort, the 40th EAS delivered 72 percent of all cargo and personnel in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

The Gallant Unit Citation is the U.S. military’s second highest unit award for extraordinary heroism in combat and is considered roughly equivalent to the Silver Star awarded to individuals.

Augmenting the 40th EAS, the Airmen from Ramstein’s 37th Airlift Squadron and the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron deployed with two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and three full aircrews. The crews integrated into high-tempo operations that included rapid relocation in response to missile threats, supporting a dispersal of critical resources to sustain flexible airlift capabilities across multiple theaters.

“It was pretty amazing to see how quickly we were able to respond,” said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Gac,

86th AMXS flying crew chief. “In less than 72 hours, our team of six maintainers and two aircraft were out the door and making a real difference in the mission.”

The Ramstein Airmen reinforced the 40th EAS with additional aircraft and crews, increasing the squadron’s mission-generation capacity, ensuring aircraft could be turned, launched and sustained at the pace the operations demanded.

Their support helped sustain tactical airlift capabilities during a period of intense and rapidly shifting mission demands.

“No two crews experienced the same mission, but all of them performed at an incredible level,” said Maj. Daniel Sabatelli, 86th Operations Group chief C-130J evaluator and 40th EAS C-130J instructor pilot. “Some launched into missions without knowing where they’d end up, others executed real-world airdrops and one was literally in the air when everything kicked off.”

Through their support the Airmen ensured the 40th EAS could continue delivering reliable airlift capability throughout the deployment. It demonstrated the 86th AW’s ability to seamlessly integrate into expeditionary operations.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our Global Gateway Airmen recognized in today’s presentation,” said Brig. Gen. Adrienne Williams, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “Their stories epitomize the lineage of who we are at the 86th and prove that whether we’re operating in forward locations or from our home stations across four countries, our people rise to the challenge of enabling our nation’s priorities.”

Exercise Heavy Rain passes, 435 AGOW Airmen stay ready

tions, process jams, and complete communication denial.”

Approximately 200 personnel immersed themselves in a scenario consisting of realistic and challenging assaults on Command, Control, Communications, and Computer Systems; encompassing effects across cyber, ground and space-based systems. The core focus was on three critical areas: Command and Control Enablement, Mission Assurance, and Agile Combat Employment concepts.

The exercise was a group effort including Allied partners and the U.S. Army 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion.

Additionally, the 37th Airlift Squadron from the 86th Airlift Wing, provided critical air support, including airdrops of equipment and personnel, further enhancing the realism of the training.

In its fifth iteration, Heavy Rain is the only place in the Air Force where this type of exercise can occur because it is the only place where this many Air Force Specialty Codes reside in one organization.

Heavy Rain 2025 took place across multiple geographic locations, including Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl; Grostenquin, France; and Chievres Air Base, Belgium.

“In one of the locations, the host nation said we couldn’t use certain equipment, so we installed an alternate solution,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Leland Cowie, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander. “It was a real-time capability that we exercised.”

The challenges weren’t limited to simulated threats. The exercise lived up to its name with periods of actual rain and another unplanned inject came from beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

“We experienced actual space weather,” said Cowie. “It provided a valuable opportunity to evaluate our response to both nefarious and natural disruptions that could emerge during wartime.”

Airmen confronted communication and movement disruptions from electronic warfare attacks, fostering creative problemsolving and decentralized decision-making within a mission command framework.

Before there was Heavy Rain, there was Light Rain, an academic block that laid the groundwork for the exercise.

“Heavy Rain 2025 is the most realistic and largest contested C4 exercise to date for the Department of the Air Force,” explained U.S. Air Force Maj. Sean Miller, 1st Combat Communications Squadron director of operations. “Driven by realworld lessons and emergent technology, we’re focusing on readiness by aggressively stress-testing alternative communication architectures, including high frequency radio, terrestrial networks, and secure, mobile communication nodes.”

Cowie explained Exercise Heavy Rain aligns with guidance from U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jason Hinds, U.S. Air Forces EuropeAir Forces Africa commander, who emphasizes the need for Airmen to be ready to

generate airpower from “minute one.”

Heavy Rain needs to be incorporated into all major Department of War exercises, added Weed.

“Reliable connectivity is more important than ever in the operational environment, so it is imperative that communicators and mission owners push the status quo together to make our Airmen more ready,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Melanie Strodtman, 1st Combat Communications Squadron commander. “What we learn from Heavy Rain 25 will cascade out to our partners across the theater and the Department of the Air Force. This will allow us to maintain freedom of action within the Electromagnetic Spectrum.”

435 SFS Airman STEP promoted to technical sergeant

by Capt. Amber Kelly-Herard 435 Air Ground Operations Wing Known for his attention to detail, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Brayan Arroyo-Arias, 435th Security Forces Squadron administration and assessments section chief, was surprised when he was informed a discrepancy was found on one of his reports.

Col. Jayson Schmiedt, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing deputy commander, informed Arroyo-Arias that his job required a technical sergeant before sharing the news that he was selected for a Stripes for Exceptional Performers promotion, Dec. 9.

“To be honest, the promotion feels a little surreal right now,” said Arroyo-Arias, who joined the Air Force in 2018. “It hasn’t fully sunk in how significant this is for my career moving forward. I’m thankful for all the support I’ve received from my command teams and supervisors, and fellow teammates, both past and present. I’ve always tried

to surround myself with motivated individuals who push me to grow, and I wouldn’t be here without their guidance and encouragement.”

The first thing Arroyo-Arias, who is from Alajuela, Costa Rica, but grew up in New Providence, New Jersey, did as a technical sergeant was call his family.

“They’ve always been there for me, offering guidance and perspective,” he said. “I also reached out to some of my mentors who have had a significant impact on my career to thank them for everything they’ve instilled in me over the years.”

Arroyo-Arias arrived at Ramstein Air Base, in November 2023. When he’s not at work, he coaches high school football and for the Air Force Child and Youth Services program in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, plays softball for the Ramstein Rams, and enjoys outdoor activities and painting.

“I really just focus on doing the best job I can every day,” said Arroyo-Arias. “I try to push myself to work at the next level and stay

committed to my development and the development of those around me. I’m extremely grateful that my team recognized the work and effort I’ve been putting in, and I’m truly honored they considered me worthy of this opportunity. Their belief in me means a lot.”

One of his mentors is U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Joshua Basinger, 18th SFS flight chief, who previously supervised him.

“His work ethic and leadership have been nothing but superior since I met him during our time at the 736th SFS at Andersen AFB, Guam,” said Basinger. “He was an excellent instructor and a true leader to his peers and fellow NCOs.” “He always strove to be better, never turned down a challenge or an opportunity to gain personal or professional development,” he continued. “He was always there for the team, ready to pick up a task when we needed someone. He was operating at a technical sergeant level as a senior airman. I am truly not surprised he was STEP pro-

by Bernd Mai U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz celebrated the start of the holiday season with a traditional holiday tree lighting and community event Dec. 5 at the Rheinlander Community Club on Smith Barracks, Baumholder.

The event featured live music in both English and German by first graders from Smith Elementary School, as well as food, crafts, photos with Santa and festive entertainment.

Following Higgins’ speech, Richardson delivered holiday wishes on behalf of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, one of the largest units

that USAG Rheinland-Pfalz supports in the Baumholder Military Community.

Mayor Alsfasser offered a holiday greeting from the local community.

“The world and life have become more difficult,” Alsfasser said.

“Therefore, we must work even more closely together than before and not turn away

from one another. That is why my Christ­mas wish is that we — Germans and Americans — strengthen everything that unites us.”

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Santa Claus, riding on a USAG Rheinland-Pfalz fire engine with lights flashing and siren sounding.

After making their way through the crowd, Santa, Higgins, Richardson, Lalor, Alsfasser, Jung, Principal Richard Dye and three Smith Elementary School students led the grand countdown and flipped the electric switch to light the large Christmas tree outside the Rheinlander.

F-35 cross-servicing demo showcases Allied interoperability

Alexandra Longfellow U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Allied Air Chiefs observed a major leap forward in European airpower cooperation as Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force weapons specialists successfully conducted a cross-servicing weapons load on a U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II from the 48th Fighter Wing stationed at RAF Lakenheath, England, during the European Air Chiefs Group meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 5.

The event marked the first international weapons cross loading event, which is part of a broader F-35 cross-servicing effort designed to strengthen interoperability, expand distributed combat support options across Europe, and demonstrate the alliance’s ability to sustain fifth-generation operations from any partnered location.

This phase builds on previous cross servicing events, such as Atlantic Trident 25 that proved allied teams can safely refuel each other’s aircraft using shared procedures, equipment, and technical standards.

The weapons load event served as a tangible example of how European air forces are moving from conceptual interoperability to practical, repeatable capability. The success of both previous cross-servicing events and this weapons loading provides a blueprint for future cross-servicing initiatives across the continent.

“It’s very important that for the upcoming sizes of the F-35 fleet in Europe, that all the individual nations can be very flexible and work together,” said Belgium Air Force Brigadier General Patrick Goossens, European Air Group deputy director. “As more European nations adopt fifth generation platforms it is very important that even though we operate the same systems and our people go through the same training, that we do on a day-to-day basis, we can continue to align each other’s procedures.”

ons load crews conducted a full certificationstandard sequence, loading U.S. munitions onto an aircraft maintained by the Liberty Wing. The effort tested shared technical data, safety procedures, equipment compatibility, and crew-to-crew communication between two nations that operate the same fifthgeneration platform.

Cross-servicing is a long-standing NATO concept that allows one nation’s aircraft to be serviced—refueled, rearmed, or maintained—by another nation’s forces. For the F-35, this capability is especially critical: the aircraft is operated by more than a dozen U.S. and allied partners across Europe, many of whom rely on the ability to disperse and sustain operations rapidly in contingency scenarios.

By demonstrating weapons and crew interoperability, U.S. and Dutch teams showed how F-35 units can operate from dispersed locations without needing full U.S. logistics packages on the ground, an essential component of Agile Combat Employment concepts and collective defense planning.

“The F-35 cross-servicing weapons load demonstrates the power of collaboration,” said Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force 1st Lt. Jarno Rutten, Air Combat Command weapons officer. “We’ve learned valuable lessons working with other nations, which will benefit all of us moving forward. This collaborative approach represents the future.”

Unlike traditional exercises, the demonstration took place directly in front of dozens of Allied leaders attending a European Air Chiefs meeting, giving senior decision-makers an upclose look at how maintainers are breaking down barriers to shared F-35 sustainment.

Over the past year, U.S. and Dutch maintainers conducted multiple bilateral training exchanges focused on technical manuals, safety procedures, and tool crosswalks. The weapons load demo is the culmination of those efforts, proving that the two nations can operate from a common sustainment framework.

This demonstration also aligns with ongoing NATO initiatives to strengthen the defense industrial base, harmonize maintenance procedures, and create scalable logis-

tics solutions that allow partners to surge combat power quickly and collectively.

“At the end of the day, we are demonstrating the interoperability to make sure that our F-35s can land at other nations’ F-35 bases,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Larry Sepassi, 48th Maintenance Group deputy commander.

“The goal is to make sure that we provide this deterrence by showing that the U.S. and other Allied nations can work simultaneously and together.”

The weapons load event served as a tangible example of how European air forces are moving from conceptual interoperability to practical, repeatable capability. The success of both Phase I refueling and Phase II weapons loading provides a blueprint for future cross-servicing initiatives across the continent.

As the F-35 fleet continues to grow in Europe, allies are increasingly prioritizing shared logistics, maintenance, and sustainment frameworks, efforts that enable NATO air forces to respond as a unified and flexible force.

ABC IN KMC: O Tannenbaum!

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs During the Advent season, you’ll see Christmas trees, lovingly decorated with ornaments and bright lights, to add color and joy to the dark season everywhere. You may have already put up your tree around Thanksgiving or are decorating one right now. But, did you know that the tradition of Christmas trees has fascinating roots?

Let’s explore!

Trees for centuries The custom of decorating Christmas trees originated in Central Europe, particularly Germany and Livonia (now Estonia and Latvia). Devout Christians in the 16th century brought decorated trees into their homes, while some even built Christmas pyramids out of wood and adorned them with evergreens and candles. This custom is still very common in eastern parts of Germany, such as in the Erzgebirge region.

Evergreen trees also held special meaning during winter for ancient people. They symbolized life and vitality. People hung evergreen boughs over doors and windows to keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. Early Germanic tribes hung up small fir trees upside down in their huts to create a fresh fragrance, soak up moisture from their (normally) stomped earth floors, also serving as a natural disinfectant.

Early Romans marked the winter solstice with a feast called Saturnalia, decorating their homes and temples with evergreen boughs. Druids in Northern Europe adorned their temples with evergreens as a symbol of everlasting life. The Vikings honored mistletoe (an evergreen) for its role in the death of Balder, a god of light.

And, no matter where you go around the world at this time of the year, you’re bound to hit on a Christmas tree, whether alive or artificial. The world-famous Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, decorated with five miles of fairy lights, is lit shortly after Thanksgiving, and tree lighting ceremonies take place throughout the Kaiserslautern Military Community. In some more southern areas, you might see Christmas palms or colorful poinsettia arrangements, and you will certainly be blared by holiday tunes.

Sing along song Perhaps the most popular German Christmas carol, “O Tannenbaum,” is sung up and down the country, and not just on Christmas Eve. Surprisingly, the piece originally had nothing to do with the Advent season and is a mixture of a popular student hit and a sad love song.

There is no escape. Wherever you go during Advent, from the shoe store to the Christmas market, “O Tannenbaum” is already there. The song - like the plant it sings about - is a real evergreen. And in many families, the performance of this

German Christmas classic is as much a part of Christmas Eve as presents and potato salad. But very few people know what melody they are actually singing.

As early as the late 18th century, young academics belted out the piece “Lauriger Horatius” (Laurel Hero Horatius). The text was in Latin because they were among educated citizens. Translated into German, the lines didn’t sound particularly contemplative, so how did the wine-filled student song become a Christmas classic?

This is - in part at least - the achievement of the preacher and educator August Zarnack, who worked as educational director of the Potsdam orphanage from 1815.

Probably inspired by an old folk tune written in the early 17th century, he wrote the first “Oh Christmas tree” verse, as we still sing it today. But the meaning of the song was completely different back then: Instead of Christmas music, Zarnack want-

ed to write a sad love song. This is what his second verse reveals. “Oh little girl, oh little girl, how wrong is your mind,” it says.

In Zarnack’s original version, the faithful leaves of the evergreen tree are the counterpart to a faithless lover.

It was not until 1824 that the Leipzig teacher Ernst Anschütz took the verses and converted them into a Christmas carol. The piece was fitting at a time when more and more families were putting up fir trees in their homes during Advent. There is one small mistake in the original German text, which reads “wie treu sind deine Blätter” (how true are your leaves), as fir trees don’t have leaves, but needles instead. The song has been translated into at least 50 languages and is now commonly sung around the world.

Silent Night Another famous Christmas song that originates from Austria is “Silent Night.”

Joseph Mohr, a young Catholic priest, had penned the poem in 1816. The carol was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics written by Mohr.

The song “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht” was first performed on Christmas Eve at the Nikolauskirche in Oberndorf, Austria.

Gruber, a schoolmaster and organist, quickly composed the melody and guitar accompaniment for that night’s mass.

Legend has it that mice damaged the organ and the song was spontaneously sung a-cappella by the church congregation.

The English translation most frequently sung today is by John Freeman Young in 1859. The song has been translated into more than 140 languages worldwide, including Japanese and known as “Kiyoshi kono yoru,” making it the most popular carol ever.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Operation Good Cheer initiative connects Soldiers with German families for Christmas Story & photo

by Benjamin Werle U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Many U.S. Soldiers stationed at U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz locations in Germany face the challenge of spending Christmas far from home.

To combat this loneliness, the Baumholder Military Community facilitates “Operation Good Cheer,” a voluntary program that pairs single and geo-bachelor Soldiers with German host families for the holiday season.

The program kicked off Dec. 3 with a meet-and-greet Americanstyle dinner event at a local Baumholder fire station, where 14 soldiers met with 12 host families from Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland. During the meetups, participants chatted about hobbies, Christmas traditions and personal anecdotes.

Bernd Mai, USAG RheinlandPfalz host nation advisor in Baumholder, emphasized the program’s goal of fostering community ties and providing soldiers with a sense of belonging during the holidays. He has volunteered as overseer of Operation Good Cheer for the past 35 years.

“Experiencing Christmas with a German family is a unique experience for the soldiers,” Mai said. He noted that the initiative helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and encourages cultural exchange.

Alexander Schweitzer, who hosts Porter along with his wife Tina and son Silas, expressed the family’s appreciation for the connection.

“We are completely overwhelmed and feel incredibly honored,” Schweitzer said. What began as a holiday acquaintance has developed into a lasting friendship, with regular visits between the families.

Mai said this is the goal of Operation Good Cheer, and he hopes for similarly positive outcomes this year as the program continues to strengthen bonds between U.S. soldiers and local families.

Living in Germany can be a wonderful experience. How wonderful your experience is depends on how well you know the rules that surround living here. Many of the rules Germany has set up are designed to make life better for everyone and to have the community work together toward a common goal. We have outlined a few rules and tips you should follow to be a good neighbor in your neighborhoods.

Quiet Time (Ruhezeit) Quiet Time is from Mon-Sat from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and all day Sundays and holidays (check with local authorities for slight variations on this). A little quiet snoring is allowed, but house and garden appliances and machinery are off limits during these times. No midnight clothes washing or Sunday afternoon lawn mowing.

If you have any specific questions, like: Can I use my brand

new Super X-G ACME chainsaw to trim daisies on sunny summer afternoons?, ask the Ordnungsamt representative [usually located in your local city hall (Rathaus)].

Snow You must clear and sand/salt your sidewalk between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. If someone slips and breaks their leg in front of your house during this time, you will be liable.

(Note: if you have an elderly neighbor, go ahead and clear their walk, too. You’ll gain a bunch of brownie points for the next grill party.)

Sidewalk and Street Whether you own a home or live in a rental, it is your responsibility to sweep the sidewalk and street in front of the house. You also need to pull out the weeds in the sidewalk.

Failing to do so can result in fines.

Timeliness Whether the event is social or business, punctuality in Germany is important. An invitation for dinner at eight usually means

anywhere between 7:55 and 8 p.m.

If you are planning a party, tell your German friends the time you actually want and expect them to arrive — don’t plan to have that 15 minute American buffer zone to put the finishing touches on your hors d’oeuvres.

There are reports of an “Akademisches Viertel” (academic quarter-hour) clause which gets you off the hook if you are less than 15 minutes late. The best thing to do is just to be on time.

If you have a meeting or are invited to a social function, and you find yourself running late, call to announce your late arrival (preferably before the time you were expected).

Remember that in Germany, time is usually on the twenty-four hour scale, like in the military, not the twelve-hour one. Sometimes when speaking, Germans will use the 12 hour clock. Usually, this does not cause confusion. Very few people in Germany eat dinner at 8 in the morning.

Accident recovery inspires Soldier to compete in triathlon

by Joe Lacdan Army News Service On a clear spring day in 2018, James Paska stopped his bike at the intersection of a busy street in his hometown of Florham Park, New Jersey.

The Soldier neared the end of his commute from his job as an Army recruiter.

Paska saw the stoplight flash green and began peddling.

A car suddenly swerved in front of him, making a sharp turn. The front of the vehicle struck the side of Paska, knocking him off his bike, and onto the top of the car’s hood.

Paska’s head crashed through the windshield. Emergency responders on the scene later told him they expected to find a dead body. Instead, Paska miraculously walked away from the wreck.

His helmet saved his life.

The Soldier suffered severe contusions.

But fortunately for Paska, doctors told him his physical fitness and training regiment helped prevent any bone fractures. Paska later learned that the driver of the vehicle had been texting while driving.

While he suffered minimal physical injuries, the collision left him emotionally and mentally scarred. “[The accident] reminded me how quickly your life can change,” said Paska, now the first sergeant of the Seattle Recruiting Company.

He said he later sought mental health treatment. But found his true therapy running triathlon and endurance sports.

He said the 2018 accident spurred him to raise the intensity of his training and workouts. He also raced in the 207-mile Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic.

“Mental health is super important, so acknowledging a traumatic incident in your life, learn from it but don’t live in it,” he said.

“Of course, you don’t forget about it, but triathlon is a way for me to have an outlet and improve my life.”

Paska had to overcome the odds since he entered the military.

The Soldier enlisted out of high school in 2002 as a 13B cannon crewmember.

At only 117 pounds, Paska entered basic training as the smallest recruit in his company. After graduating from Advanced Individual Training, he gradually built up his physical fitness over his first 10 years

in the Army to meet the demands of his duties.

As a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, he went on three combat deployments.

He had already began training for endurance sports after changing career fields and becoming an Army recruiter, but the accident refocused him to take his training a step further.

Paska studied holistic health and recovery while engaging in more endurance training.

He adopted a vegan diet and cut out unnecessary fats and sugars.

“I was extremely motivated to get back on my feet and moving,” Paska said. “And that’s

kind of when I decided to really commit to triathlon.” “[The accident] set me up for an opportunity to do something in my life instead of feeling sorry for myself.”

He started gradually improving on his swim and bolstering his abilities bike riding and running. He competed in his first triathlon at Atlantic City in 2019 and has raced six half Iron Man events since. Last year he travelled to San Francisco, taking part in an Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and a 70.3-quarter lane race in Idaho.

As an Army recruiter, he tries to impart that message to his recruits. He said the Army provides an avenue for potential Soldiers to cultivate their talents and reach their goals in fitness or in their military careers.

“I just want to remind everybody across the Army that Soldiers do go the distance,” he said.

“Age should be measured by energy, not just the number. And we’re never too old to start.”

His training culminated into earning a spot on the All-Army Triathlon team. At 41 years old, the New Jersey native was the oldest member of the squad and only enlisted Soldier. But the 23-year Army veteran achieved a goal that he set years ago.

At the 2025 Armed Forces Triathlon Championships in San Diego, Paska finished in 23rd with a time of 2:43:11. He said the opportunity last September inspired him to continue competing in triathlons.

He plans to compete in a triathlon in Oregon in 2026 and try out for the All-Army Triathlon team once again.

“I don’t think about my age. I’m grateful every single day I get to wake up,” he said.

“You have 86,400 seconds in a day; I want to maximize my time. I want to create memories and continue this experience.”

At 34, after years of dedication, he has recently completed his Bachelor of Science in Sports & Health Sciences from the American Military University.

Washington’s journey into health sciences is personal. Having spent a significant portion of his life in physical therapy, he has seen firsthand the profound impact it can have.

“I’ve been able to see and experience the benefits,” Washington shared, explaining that through his own recovery, he “found a passion in it.” This passion became the driving force behind his academic pursuits, even as he managed a demanding military career.

For eight years, Washington has served as a Veterinary Care Technician, where his days are a whirlwind of responsibility. “A regular day in my job consists of managing the schedules, planning trainings and mentoring Soldiers and NAF personnel,” he said.

Juggling these duties with coursework was a significant challenge. His solution was a steady, measured approach. “Taking a class or two at a time took a little longer,” he admitted, “but it paid off in the end.”

The payoff is already evident in his daily interactions with his soldiers. Washington is actively translating his academic knowledge into practical, actionable wellness strategies for his unit.

“Soldier-wise, it is easy to implement stretching into day-to-day activities,” he explained. “It only takes a little bit of time but it is highly beneficial for health and fitness.”

His degree also provided him with a deeper understanding of nutrition, which he combines with the Army’s existing health and fitness frameworks to help his soldiers achieve maximum output. He sees it as his duty to push this knowledge to those he leads, enhancing their readiness and personal wellbeing.

While his goal to apply for a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program is “still on the wall for now,” Washington finds great satisfaction in his current role and the ability to apply his learning. He hopes his journey can inspire others who may be struggling to start

Egyptian Museum The oldest (and one of the best, after the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo) Egyptian museum in the world is in Turin. Founded in 1824, the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum) contains an excellent collection of sarcophagi, statues, and other relics from one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Open daily, the museum is also great for kids.

Catch a Juventus match For soccer (or football, as it is called in Italy) fans, Turin’s local team can be a bit polarizing. Some fans detest Juventus FC like they might detest the Dallas Cowboys or the New York Yankees, mostly because Juventus is (and long has been) one of the best teams in the world.

The team also inspires something like religion among the locals, which is why catching a match in Turin is an incredible cultural experience.

As a bonus, some of America’s top players, including Tim Weah and Weston Mckennie, have recently played with (and in McKennie’s case, are still playing with) Juventus.

Head to the Alps Turin is the perfect jumping-off city for outdoor Alpine adventures during all four seasons. You’re less than an hour from hiking, skiing, cycling, via ferrata, and some of the most extraordinary natural terrain in all of Europe. In a lot of ways, Turin feels like a very big mountain town – sort of like an elegant Italian cousin to a place like Denver.

Here are seven great places to start.

Egyptian museum

Must-see: Turin’s Royal Residence The crown jewel (almost literally) of Turin, the ‘Royal Residence’ is actually a series of gorgeous buildings that contain some of the city’s best destinations, including a palace, library, armory, art gallery and archeological museum.

Porto Palazzo

Let’s talk about food (and drink) It’s no surprise that a city in Italy might be famous for food. But Turin has a different scene than what you might find in Tuscany or the Veneto. Turin is in Piedmont, which means the food is exquisite and the people are down to earth, which is a brilliant combination.

If you love coffee and pastries, you’re in luck. Turin is famous for its pastry shops, and rightfully so. The city’s bakers and pastry chefs give the best French chefs a serious run for their money. Visitors will find an incredible selection of beautifully designed (and great-tasting) cakes, meringues and tarts.

And then there are coffee shops. Turin is famous for having a dozen or so historic cafés, each of which is packed with cultural and political history. Some, like Café Al Bicerin or Café Fiorio, are more than 200 years old. And, of course, it’s Italy. Great espresso can be had anywhere in the city.

If you like cheese, fine chocolates, gelato, and wine, you’re in luck, too. The Piedmont region has dozens of delicious cheeses, and Turin has more than 200 shops that specialize in wine.

Getting there By car, Turin is 7.5 hours from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden, and around 6.5 hours from Stuttgart. Many low-fare air carriers offer direct flights to Turin. For train options, check with Deutsche Bahn.

Church of the Holy Shroud (St. John Cathedral) The Holy Shroud (commonly known as the Shroud of Turin) has been rumored for centuries to be the cloth in which Christ was buried. Though definitively proving that claim isn’t easy, the cloth still contains the image of a face and is treated like a holy relic.

No matter what you believe, the visit to St. John Cathedral is worth it. It’s also incredible to see (and learn more about) the incredible high-tech approaches used to secure and preserve the Shroud.

No royal residence would be complete without some spot-on royal gardens. Turin doesn’t disappoint. Visitors to the Royal Garden will feel like they’ve stepped into another, very green, era.

culture, style, shopping, and outdoor activities galore. In Turin, you’ll feel like you’re in on a secret.

Italy is famous for piazzas, towers, museums, sunshine, and tourist shops around every corner. Turin is not like most places in Italy. The weather is generally temperate. Most tourist hordes in the north of Italy opt for Milan, Florence, and Venice.

As a result, the city feels…different. In a good way.

Turin also has a cool history. Celtic tribes established it in the same spot hundreds of years before the Romans (the Po River was a good place to be), and Turin was the first capital of the unified Kingdom of Italy from 1861-65.
