Knight LZ: Historic taxiway landing at Ramstein by Staff Sgt. Sabrina Fuller-Judd, SrA Edgar Grimaldo, SrA Jarred Lovett, A1C Joseph Curzi 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A 37th Airlift Squadron aircrew flying a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft conducted a taxiway landing during a wing exercise at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 18. The event marked history as the first time an airplane has landed at Ramstein without using a runway. The exercise provided an opportunity for aircrew and support personnel to validate alternate landing options in case if a runway was unavailable. “This capability is more than just landing on a taxiway,” said Col. Matthew Wunderlich, 86th Operations Group commander. “It demonstrates our ability to adapt, to work together, and continue generating airpower when conditions change. This creativity and resiliency is essential to maintaining our readiness, increasing strategic options, and fulfilling the mission.” A C-130J Super Hercules aircraft lands on a taxiway at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 18. Exercise Northern Viking marks 75 years of defense cooperation by Navy Lt. Caitlyn Strader U.S. 6th Fleet
agreement between Iceland and the U.S. Running from Aug. 22 to Sept. 3, Northern Viking will challenge joint and coalition forces with a series of highly realistic training scenarios. Key training opportunities will focus on antisubmarine warfare, mine countermeasures, expeditionary construction, search and rescue, humanitarian medical response and disaster response. “Seventy-five years of bilateral defense cooperation is a testament to the unbreakable bond between the United States and Iceland,” said U.S. Navy Vice Adm. J. T. Anderson, U.S. 6th Fleet commander. “Northern Viking 2026 is a demonstration of our commitment to the collective defense of the North Atlantic. Together with our allies, we continue to create an environment that allows interoperability among NATO maritime forces so that European allies can take over primary responsibility for deterrence and defense in the European theater.” Exercise Northern Viking 2026 is designed to strengthen interoperability and force readiness between the U.S., Iceland and other allied nations. The exercise enables critical multidomain command and control of joint and coalition forces defending Iceland and safeguarding the sea lines of communication within the waterways between Greenland,
Iceland and the United Kingdom. As a vital global shipping corridor, keeping this area secure is an imperative for transatlantic trade, commerce and security between North America and Europe. “Together, we’re honing our warfighting skills and ensuring our ability to secure this critical region and to project decisive combat power wherever and whenever necessary,” said Air Force Gen Alexus G. Grynkewich, NATO supreme allied commander Europe and commander of U.S. European Command. “Throughout this exercise, and others, we will leverage the power of data in [artificial intelligence] enabled decision support tools, will integrate data streams in real time and ensure our command and control structures can make decisions at the speed of future conflict.” The 1951 defense agreement was the foundation of a unique security framework designating the U.S. as responsible for Iceland’s defense in the absence of its own standing military. This treaty established a highly specialized and enduring defense presence in the region. Over the last 75 years, this partnership has adapted from Cold War deterrence to modern multidomain defense operations, ensuring that the transatlantic bridge remains open and secure.

U.S. service members arrived in Keflavik, Iceland, yesterday, joining forces with the Icelandic Coast Guard and other NATO allies for the U.S. 6th Fleet’s Exercise Northern Viking 2026. Participating nations include Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Norway, Poland and the U.S., alongside specialized assets and personnel assigned to the Allied Maritime Command and NATO Joint Force Command Norfolk. “Our defense cooperation with the United States has thrived for 75 years because it has never stood still; it has developed to meet [the] evolving challenges of our time,” said Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Iceland's minister for foreign affairs, during the exercise’s opening ceremony. “The best way to celebrate this anniversary is not merely by commemorating our partnership, but by actually practicing it — together and alongside our allies. Northern Viking is precisely that, a demonstration that the commitments we have made to one another are dynamic, practical and built on trust, underpinned by shared interests.” This year’s iteration of the biennial exercise marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 bilateral defense

LANDING from Page 1 Multiple units supported the exercise to ensure the operation was successful and conducted safely, including the 86th Security Forces Squadron, 86th Operations Support Squadron, 37th AS and 721st Aerial Port Squadron. “Exercises like this allow our aircrew and support teams to build the experience and confidence needed to operate in a contingency environment,” said Capt.
Ty Millsap, 86th OSS Chief of Wing Tactics. “It takes coordination across the installation to safely execute an exercise like this, and that coordination is what makes us ready for the unexpected.” The exercise highlighted the importance of preparation and teamwork, strengthening the wing’s ability to respond, and validating its readiness for unexpected challenges.

Airlifter of the month: Airman 1st Class Mary-Alice Prosper
Story & photo by Airman 1st Class Paden Lancaster 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Why this process? Why this regulation? Why does the next step happen the way it does? Somewhere inside the Ramstein Law Center, there is usually a seasoned attorney on the receiving end of these questions. “I’ve read the regulation. I understand the principle,” said Airman 1st Class Mary-Alice Prosper, 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocate military justice paralegal and Airlifter of the Month. “But, can you explain to me why we’re doing these things?” It’s a habit she had to develop. When she first arrived at Ramstein AB, she was more inclined to answer with “yes, ma’am” or “yes, sir” and dive head-first straight into the task. Experience in military justice eventually taught her that following instructions could only take her so far. The job demanded that she understand the architecture behind the process. The expectations come early for military paralegals. Prosper may wear the rank of a junior enlisted Airman, but she says there is little about the responsibility that feels junior.
“We don’t get to function as junior Airmen,” she said. “You have to function at a high level from the start.” That reality has been sharpened by periods of minimal manning as personnel rotate through temporary duties, deployments and other commitments. Attorneys aren’t always available to step forward, nor can a non-commissioned officer. Sometimes the person left holding the responsibilities is the junior Airmen, who have to know enough to make the moves. “There comes a time where you’re the A1C in the office and you have to figure it out,” Prosper said. “The attorney cannot go. The paralegal has to step up.” Before her journey in the U.S. Air Force began, Prosper’s life looked differently. Prosper was raised in St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands, describing herself then as a “creative introvert.” She taught biology to ninth graders at Charlotte Amalie High School, coached pageant contestants and public speakers and carried a longstanding ambition to become an attorney. “I’ve wanted to be an attorney my entire life,” Prosper said. She spent college exploring
both medicine and law, before the legal field was the final verdict. Law school was supposed to come next, until she learned about the Judge Advocate General’s Corps and the opportunities through military service. The culmination of military and legal matters has placed Prosper close to people whose lives rarely fit cleanly into the allegations, regulations and records used to adjudicate a case. She learned quickly that professionalism cannot depend on what sits inside of a case file. “I try to put the charges out of my mind and treat that person with respect,” she said. “They may have done a terrible thing, but at the end of the day, they’re a person.” Attentiveness has proven useful in a career field that asks Prosper to occupy more space than her rank might suggest. The creative introvert from St. Thomas is now expected to know when to speak, when to question and when to step forward. “Our ultimate goal is to support Airmen,” Prosper explained. “To help them navigate through difficult situations, provide advice and guidance.”

Prosper’s attention to detail, initiative and ability to operate as a paralegal, beyond the expectations of a junior Airman contributed to her selection as Airlifter of the Month.

FAN EVENT 2026 -
ONE SENSATION AFTER ANOTHER Do you love LEGO® bricks? Are you fascinated by what can be created from thousands - or even millions - of them? We certainly are! For eleven years, Lauter Steine e.V., a LEGO fan club based in Kaiserslautern, has brought together people who share one passion: creating extraordinary worlds from LEGO bricks. Many people in the Kaiserslautern area may already know us from our large exhibition at the Gartenschau, featuring numerous LEGO models of Kaiserslautern and the surrounding region, as well as our ever-growing LEGO city. But our passion goes far beyond that. Over the years, our members have created countless projects, and as a recognized LEGO FanCoLab community we have also had the opportunity to collaborate on special projects connected with LEGO in Billund and Günzburg. And this year, we have something truly spectacular to share.
The dimensions alone are breathtaking: the ship is approximately 6 meters (20 feet) long, 1.2 meters (4 feet) wide and 2.6 meters (8.5 feet) high - just for the main body of the ship. The mast reaches approximately 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) in height. It is one of the largest LEGO NINJAGO ships ever created in Europe - and possibly anywhere in the world. What makes this project even more remarkable is that there is no instruction manual. Our builders used the current Destiny‘s Bounty as their inspiration and transformed it into a gigantic, unique LEGO model.
Much More Than One Giant Ship
A World Premiere in Landstuhl: The Destiny‘s Bounty
At the Lauter Steine Fan Event on September 5 and 6, 2026, at the Stadthalle Landstuhl, visitors will have the exclusive opportunity to experience a LEGO creation on a scale they have never seen before: Our gigantic Destiny‘s Bounty! Inspired by the famous ship from the LEGO NINJAGO® world, our Destiny‘s Bounty consists of approximately 1.3 million LEGO bricks.
across the region and even internationally - including builders from Switzerland, Bavaria and France. Over countless weekends and thousands of hours of work, around two dozen dedicated LEGO builders worked together to design, construct and perfect this enormous ship. The result is much more than a large LEGO model. It is a true team effort and a showcase of what creativity, friendship and a shared passion for LEGO can achieve. And Landstuhl will be the first place where visitors can experience it. Only a few days after our Fan Event, the Destiny‘s Bounty will begin its journey to LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, before continuing to the major gaming fair in Essen. That makes the Lauter Steine Fan Event a very special opportunity to see this extraordinary creation right here in our region.
The project began through a LEGO fan collaboration in Billund. Construction started on February 14, and within only a few months, our team turned an ambitious idea into reality. Members traveled to Kaiserslautern from
Of course, the Destiny‘s Bounty is only one of many reasons to visit. The Stadthalle Landstuhl will be transformed into a colorful world of LEGO creations. Visitors can discover models covering a wide variety of themes - from Star Wars and LEGO City to trains, illuminated models, detailed buildings and unique creations designed by talented MOC builders. Our friends from the international LEGO community will also join us. LEGO fan clubs from Luxembourg and France will bring their own creations to Landstuhl, making the event a truly international gathering. There will be something new to discover around every corner.
Build, Create and Join In!
Our Fan Event isn‘t just about looking at LEGO models - we want you to get creative, too. Throughout the weekend, visitors will be able to participate in workshops, building activities and hands-on stations. Build with classic 2x4 LEGO bricks, let your imagination run wild at our creative building stations, explore educational LEGO activities and discover just how much you can create with a handful of bricks. Whether you are a child discovering LEGO for the first time or an adult who has been building for decades, there will be plenty of opportunities to join in. And if your own LEGO collection is still missing that special brick or set, don‘t forget to visit our LEGO flea market. Dealers and LEGO enthusiasts will offer bricks, sets and other treasures - and you might just find exactly what you have been searching for.
We Can‘t Wait to Welcome You!
For us at Lauter Steine e.V., this event represents months of preparation, thousands of hours of building and, above all, our shared passion for LEGO. Our entire team is excited to finally open the doors and share our creations with you. Come and experience the Lauter Steine Fan Event on September 5 and 6, 2026, at the Stadthalle Landstuhl. Bring your family, bring your friends - and prepare to discover what is possible when imagination meets millions of LEGO bricks. We look forward to welcoming you in Landstuhl!

USAFE-AFAFRICA legal team earns DAF recognition for dispute resolution
Members of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Office of the Staff Judge Advocate pose for a group photo at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 19. The USAFE-AFAFRICA legal team received the Secretary of the Air Force General Counsel Award for Dispute Resolution for its efforts to strengthen negotiation, communication and cooperation with Allies and partners across the European theater.
Story & photos by Tech. Sgt. Alexandra M. Longfellow U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs Behind every aircraft crossing international airspace, service member operating on foreign soil and mission conducted alongside an Ally or partner is a network of agreements defining how U.S. forces can operate. For the legal professionals at U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, strengthening that network often means working early with foreign partners to agree on authorities, rules, and processes that help us get the job done. That work recently earned the USAFE-AFAFRICA Office of the Staff Judge Advocate the Secretary of the Air Force General Counsel Award
for Dispute Resolution, recognizing the team’s efforts in negotiation and dispute resolution across the European theater. “The Judge Advocate is here to protect the command and create space for them to accomplish their mission,” said Leslie Schmidt, USAFE-AFAFRICA JA international law attorney. “When we’re negotiating, we’re working with other countries to get the space, the supplies and the permissions that we need to operate our aircraft and to maintain our force.” The team’s work spans an increasingly complex operating environment where U.S. forces routinely work alongside Allies and partners under agreements developed over decades. Among the efforts recognized were the development of imple-
menting arrangement templates supporting defense cooperation agreements with NATO Allies. These arrangements take broader international agreements and translate them into the practical details necessary for forces to operate together — from environmental considerations to access, logistics and other requirements. The work has become particularly important as NATO has expanded, including the accession of Finland and Sweden in recent years. While defense cooperation agreements establish broad commitments between nations, implementing arrangements help define how those commitments work in practice. “They’re the actual nuts and bolts of how we’re going to cooperate,” Schmidt said.
One example involved developing an environmental implementation arrangement template designed to respect host-nation environmental requirements while ensuring U.S. forces remain compliant with U.S. environmental policies and authorities. The office also helped establish a new bilateral forum with the United Kingdom designed to address potential areas of friction before they affect operations. The United States and United Kingdom have operated alongside one another for generations, but the longevity and depth of that relationship also mean the two nations operate under a collection of agreements and arrangements developed at different times and levels. The Bilateral Defence Forum brings senior decision-mak-
ers together twice a year with a planned agenda to identify concerns, clarify agreements and work through issues before they interfere with the mission. “We’re setting up a process to identify issues and discuss options for resolution before they become major problems,” Schmidt said. That emphasis on communication is central to the team’s approach. Rather than waiting until disagreements require formal resolution, USAFE-AFAFRICA legal professionals work with Allies, partners and organizations throughout the command to establish shared understanding early. “Negotiation and dispute resolution are essentially communication,” Schmidt said. “This involves talking up, sideways and down to

August 28, 2026 ensure the products we negotiate support and advance USAFEAFAFRICA’s mission.” The team also supported datasharing efforts with European Allies and partners, helping improve the common operating picture available to U.S. and Allied forces. Sharing information can reduce duplication of effort while providing commanders with information needed to plan and execute missions. Those negotiations rarely involve attorneys working alone. Legal professionals regularly rely on subject-matter experts throughout the Air Force and joint community to understand the operational and technical details behind the agreements they negotiate. “We are experts in legal problem solving,” Schmidt said. “We are not subject matter experts on the technical details in our negotiations.” Depending on the issue, that can mean working with environmental specialists, security professionals, customs experts or representatives from other military services. That collaboration helps ensure agreements are not only legally sound but accomplish what commanders and operators need them to do. The office also works to resolve issues at the lowest appropriate level whenever possible using interest based techniques, preventing problems from consuming additional resources across higher headquarters. “Every step up a command that a problem has to go is another staff that has to get read onto it, that has to get spun up, that has to brief their commander,” Schmidt said. Resolving an issue early reduces the people, time and resources required
to address it. Operating across Europe adds another layer of complexity. Successful negotiation, Schmidt said, requires understanding not only U.S. objectives but the concerns and perspectives of host nations and partners. “The biggest challenge in all of these is putting yourself in the shoes of the partner,” Schmidt said. “Finding your common goals to protect U.S. security interests rather than getting hung up on the differences.” For USAFE-AFAFRICA, those common goals center on maintaining peace and security and sharing responsibility for the defense of Europe. The legal team’s work also includes protecting the rights of U.S. personnel overseas. Under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement and other international agreements, criminal jurisdiction can involve both U.S. and host-nation authorities. The team worked to secure the release of foreign criminal jurisdiction in 21 complex cases, helping protect service members’ due process rights while reinforcing U.S. responsibility for the conduct and discipline of its forces. The breadth of the mission requires experience, collaboration and an understanding of how issues in one country can inform negotiations in another. Schmidt credited the office’s success to the depth and diversity of experience across the team, including senior attorneys whose careers have exposed them to legal and operational challenges throughout Europe. “We are just stacked with talent,” Schmidt said. “That diversity of experience, that competence and
those leadership skills, I think are tremendous assets to what we do here.” For Airmen outside the legal community, much of that work may be invisible. Courtrooms and litigation are often the most recognizable aspects of military law, but much of the work performed by judge advocates happens long before an issue reaches that point. “Most JAGs are not in court on a regular basis,” Schmidt said. “A huge part of being a lawyer is making sure that the command meets our legal obligations. My office is focused on meeting our obligations under international law. And the purpose of those regulations and of international law is to prevent conflict in the first place.” That work is particularly important for an Air Force whose ability to accomplish its mission depends on access and movement. “The Air Force is inherently a mobile organization,” Schmidt said. “We are not the Air Force if we are not moving through the air.” Securing the rights necessary for Airmen and aircraft to move through allied and partner nations, operate from their territory and accomplish missions is therefore directly connected to USAFE-AFAFRICA’s ability to generate airpower. For the team, the Department of the Air Force-level recognition came as a surprise. Many members did not know the office had been nominated for the award. But Schmidt said the recognition comes at an important time for the command and its relationships throughout Europe.
Members of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Office of the Staff Judge Advocate discuss locations on a map during a meeting at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 19. The team’s work supports USAFE-AFAFRICA operations by helping establish agreements, address potential areas of dispute and preserve access and freedom of movement for U.S. forces operating alongside Allies and partners throughout Europe.
Page 9 “We are at a moment in Europe right now ... where our partnerships are more important than ever,” Schmidt said. “We have a uniquely talented team, a uniquely qualified team that is supported by the leadership here to execute.” For USAFE-AFAFRICA’s legal professionals, that execution often happens quietly — through a con-
versation, an agreement or a problem solved before it jeopardizes the command’s mission. The result is greater freedom for commanders to make decisions, stronger relationships with allies and partners, and the legal foundation necessary for Airmen to accomplish the mission across Europe and Africa.

Wurstmarkt Bad Dürkheim, largest winefest in the world.
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs If you’re a lover or even connoisseur of great wines, or rather prefer fruity grape juice, you’re just in the right place to be! Germany is one of Europe’s largest winegrowing countries and the state of Rheinland-Pfalz produces two-thirds of the country’s fine wines. The Moselle and Saar valleys along with Rheinhessen are well-known grape growing regions. Most of the vineyards are on or very close to the 50th latitude, which is rather unusual in international comparison. High quality and successful viticulture are only possible based on a special unique meso and microclimate condition. The “Deutsche Weinstrasse” (German wine route) stretches 85 kilometers from the German Wine Gate in SchweigenRechtenbach on the French border in the south to the House of the German Wine Route in Bockenheim in the north. Many famous towns such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt and Landau lie along the way and the region is renowned for vineyards as far as the eye can see on flat plains in close proximity to the Rhein River. The special mild climate zone provides 1,800 hours of sun a year. Another famous viticulture region is along the Moselle and Saar rivers, but on steep slopes with up to 60 percent inclines. Approximately 60 million vines grow along the steep hills where the winding rivers reflect sunlight onto the slopes and warm the vines to ripen to a plentiful harvest. Historic Viticulture The Celts were the first to cultivate white grapes along the banks and slopes of the Moselle River almost 3,000 years ago. Then
Romans refined the winemaking process, improved the quality and eventually introduced darker red grapes. As wine consumption of the Romans grew along with the empire throughout the centuries, soldiers and civil servants were paid with wine, rather than coins, and even slaves received a daily ration. About 9.25 million hectoliters (2.4 million gallons) of wine are produced annually in Germany and approximately 257.000 hectoliters (668.200 gallons) alone are exported to the United States. September marks the beginning of the harvest season which can last until December. Large state-of-the art grape harvesters can pick the grapes on even surfaces, however the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Moselle and Rhein Rivers have to be picked by hand, a tedious task. Federweisser and Zwiebelkuchen After the initial grape pressing process, also known as keltering, the premier wine produced is called Federweisser (feather white) because of its milky, white color. Although very sweet in taste, it also has a high alcohol content and is often sold in containers in little booths along the roadside. A tradition that comes with the season is delicious and spicy Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake) together with the semi-processed wine. The warm dish, more of a quiche than a typical cake, with onions and bacon bits, is a perfect complement to the fizzling new wine. Freshly pressed, pure and sweet grape juice is also a perfect alternative for those that prefer a non-alcoholic delight. After the first winter frost in late November or early December, the very last grapes are handpicked and processed into a sweet, rare and expensive Eiswein (ice wine).
Wine fests A cozy wine tasting in a small circle is a great way to get to know the best products from individual winemakers. However, if you really want to immerse yourself deeply in the culture and taste of an entire wine-growing region, there is no better place to start than the wine festivals in the villages and towns of Rheinland-Pfalz. Every year, every town, no matter how small, celebrates the grape juice in the streets, squares and alleys, but there are some communities that think a lot bigger: they dress in historical costumes, organize magnificent parades and hire local music groups, and in some cases they even have amusement rides and fireworks to bring you closer to the local wines and, on top of that, the local culture. Upcoming wine fests from late August to October: • Mainzer Weinmarkt, Aug. 27 – 30 and Sep. 3 – 6. While you can marvel at the historic ambience of the town centers on the Moselle with their half-timbered buildings, Rheinhessen welcomes you at the same time at the wine market in the state’s capital right in the heart of the green lung of Mainz. • Binger Winzerfest, Aug. 28 – Sep. 7: Another Rheinhessen awarded event in the Bingen Wine Festival at the apex of the Rhine and Nahe Rivers. For 11 days, the people of Bingen celebrate the artistry of their winemakers, making it the longest festival on the Rhine. • Bernkastel-Kues-Weinfest Mittel mosel, Sep. 4 – 7: The wine fest season kicks off at the end of August at the Middle Moselle Wine Festival in the charming wine town of Bernkastel-Kues, famous for its picturesque market square with ancient half-timbered houses. • Wurstmarkt Bad Dürkheim, Sep 12 – 16, 19 – 22: Said to be the largest wine
festival in the world, the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt (sausage market) lures you to the German Wine Route for 9 days and nights with an extensive program. Special trains will be running from Kaiserslautern, so hop on and enjoy the festivities! • Herbstmarkt mit Weindorf in Landau, Sep. 12 – 20: Landau autumn market with its traditional wine village invites you to the south of the Palatinate in mid-September. A total of 71 white and 52 red grape varieties are cultivated here – just the right variety for your discerning taste! • Deutsches Weinlesefest, Neustadt/ Weinstrasse, Sep. 25 – Oct. 12: As soon as the festive season in Bad Dürkheim is over, the next major event about the liquid gold begins in Neustadt. From late September to mid-October, the German Wine Harvest Festival offers you two very special highlights in addition to the large fair and the w.i.n.e.FESTival. Every year, the election of the German Wine Queen traditionally takes place. At the end of the celebrations, numerous traditional and marching groups as well as spectacular floats parade through the city – forming the largest wine parade in all of Germany! • Rotweinfest Ingelheim, Sep. 26 – Oct. 4: The small town of Ingelheim is not far from the state capital, whose red wine festival in the historic ambience of the illuminated castle church is one of the most beautiful wine festivals in Rheinhessen. As the name suggests, it specializes in red wines, but you can also sip white wine along the banks of the Rhein River enjoying the view. Ready for the unexpected: TCCC training proves vital in combined-force lifesaving effort by Master Sgt. Carlin Leslie 406th Air Expeditionary Wing Through Air Force Forces Generation, all Airmen receive Tactical Combat Casualty Care training as a pre-deployment requirement, with the hope that they will never actually have to use it. However, the reality of military deployments and their locations could require Airmen to utilize those skills. For seven 75th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron maintainers from the 403d Wing at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, currently deployed to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, that readiness was tested in the early hours of June 14. What began as a standard night quickly shifted into a medical emergency, where TCCC lessons were put into action. “Combat readiness is not a switch we flip; it is forged in the daily, deliberate reps of our training,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Kurt Mann, 75th EAS Rogue Aircraft Maintenance officer in charge. “When seconds mattered, these aircraft maintainers proved that tactical mastery is just as important as technical expertise. Their seamless execution of TCCC saved a life because readiness is an ingrained instinct not defined by an AFSC.” During their shift early in the morning, the team discovered a Japanese Self-Defense Force member who had collapsed into a roadside drainage channel during physical training and was suffering from severe heat exhaustion and seemed unresponsive. Where every second counts for a medical emergency, the Airmen immediately went into action. Without hesitation, Staff Sgt. Denvie Taylor, Tech. Sgt. William Pierce, Senior Airman Carah Holden, Staff Sgt. Roy

Johnson Jr, Tech. Sgt. Ronald Johnson, Senior Airman Sydney Johnson, and Master Sgt. Nolan Halcomb relied on their foundational training to manage the situation and the resources they had to help the member. “Emergencies can happen anywhere, and that is where preparation makes the ultimate difference. Medical knowledge is only as valuable as your ability to apply it under intense pressure,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Denvie Taylor, 75th EAS Rogue Aircraft Maintenance Technician. “When faced with a real-world crisis, my TCCC training immediately kicked in, allowing me to stay calm, rapidly assess the patient, and deliver critical interventions for a heat-
related emergency until EMS took over.” The Airmen immediately gathered ice, water, and electrolytes at first, but they recognized the situation had worsened, and the maintainers went to the nearby fitness center to contact emergency services. “The most challenging setbacks of the situation were not immediately recognizing the emergency, the language barrier that was presented, and the fact that emergency services were not readily accessible to the proximity of the location,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Carah Holden, 75th EAS Rogue Aircraft maintenance technician. “Our team had to use situational awareness and steadfast resourcefulness to help remedy

The maintainers’ rapid, coordinated response prevented further injury and potentially saved the allied member’s life. In recognition of their heroic actions and humanitarian regard, the Japanese Deployed Air Force member visited Rogue Operations on June 18 to personally coin the maintenance team. As well, in recognition of their actions, each member received the Air and Space Commendation Medal for their outstanding achievement from the 75th EAS commander. In the weeks following the medical emergency, the engagement brought the two nations closer, leading to the 75th EAS inviting the Japan Defense Force to come tour one of their aircraft and share in a knowledge exchange between service members and nations. “Mission success relies entirely on the strength of our team and the seamless integration with our allies,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Stepanie Brown, 75th EAS commander. “I am incredibly proud of the 75th AES MX team’s swift actions and dedication under pressure, which have solidified the enduring bond between our allied forces.” The actions of these seven Airmen prove that TCCC is more than an annual training requirement; it is a critical wartime skill. Whether under fire or just going about the evening on deployment, the ability to think fast and act fast is foundational to the mission and the enduring strength of joint and allied partnerships. “The 403d Wing is nicknamed the ‘Wing of Choice,’ because we have an uncompromising state of readiness that secures the mission and protects our people and allies, on and off the flightline,” said Mann.

LRMC throws back-to-school bash for local students
The Back-to-School Bash brought students, parents, and community partners together in one convenient location to gear up for the new school year Aug. 14 at the Landstuhl Elementary school playground. For the volunteers and staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, supporting events like this is a direct extension of their mission to take care of military families.
Story & photos by Bernhard Lashleyleidner Landstuhl Regional Medical Center The sun shone over the playground as children ran, laughed and played with friends, while parents picked up school supplies, and uniforms during Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Back-to-School Bash Aug. 14. The event, hosted by LRMC for Landstuhl Elementary School students, brought together hospital staff, teachers, library staff, volunteers, and community organizations to help families prepare for the upcoming school year. For 1st Lt. Keanu Burk, a surgical medical nurse at LRMC, volunteering at the event was an easy decision. “It is a wonderful way to give back and ensure our local students are prepared for the new year,” Burk said. “This event ties perfectly into LRMC’s core mission of taking care of service members’ families.” Dr. Mary Bade, principle of the Landstuhl Elementary School, said the event gave students, parents and community partners an opportunity to prepare for the new school year in one location. “This is a great opportunity for families to meet their children’s teachers and drop off school supplies early,” Bade said. “It saves parents time and removes the anxiety of forgetting important items on the first day.” Air Force Master Sgt. Kevin Owens, quality assurance noncommission officer, 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron attended the event with his family, hoping a clear goal to connect with teachers
and learn more about the community supporting his children. “The main reason we came out was to meet the teachers and get to know the people who will be guiding our kids this year,” Owens said. “Events like this really strengthen the bond between teachers, service members, and the community.” The event also featured local organizations, including a karate school, Irish dancers, and gymnastics clubs, giving families an opportunity to learn about activities available to their children. His wife Suzanne agreed, noting a major perk of the event. “Being able to drop off school supplies today is huge,” she said. “It means the kids don’t have to drag massive bags of school supplies on top of their backpacks when school starts on Monday.” Making life a little easier for military families was a central focus of the event, and LRMC Soldiers volunteered to help distribute supplies and interact with students. “The goal of the event was simply to make sure every child felt ready and excited for the new school year,” Burk said. One of the highlights was the scavenger hunt, where students searched for items and received small prizes. Families left with school supplies, including notebooks, pencils, and backpacks, helping ensure students had the materials they needed for the classroom. “We want to bridge the gap between the medical center and the families we serve,” said Col. Warren Stewart, commander of LRMC. “Taking care of the family is critical

to military readiness, and when service members know that their children are supported, equipped, and excited for school, it removes a major layer of stress at home.” Stewart said events such as the Backto-School Bash demonstrate LRMC’s commitment to supporting the military community beyond its medical mission. “Events like the Back-to-School Bash show that LRMC is about much more than just treating illnesses,” Stewart said. “It is
about taking care of the whole community and supporting military families in every way possible.” As the event wrapped up, students headed home with full backpacks and a renewed excitement for the school year. “We are here to keep you healthy, strong, and supported,” said Stewart. “Have a wonderful and safe school year. Community events like the Back-to-School Bash help anchor these children.”

Story & photo by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe Staff Sgt. Manely Pierre Asencio, Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of Environmental Health Sciences at Public Health Command Europe, balances a wide range of operations while also completing a college degree in a different time zone. Arriving in Germany just two months ago, Asencio is still in the “walking” phase of her new assignment, but her impact is already being felt. She originally joined the Army to find financial stability and educational opportunities. Today, she is just two classes away from completing her bachelor’s degree in public health - a fitting field for her military occupational specialty. An Environmental Health Sciences NCOIC plays a critical role in force health protection and preventive medicine. They are responsible for anticipating, identifying and evaluating health hazards to keep service members safe and mission ready. Asencio describes the EHS mission as a broad umbrella of safety that goes far beyond standard medical care. Her team’s footprint is massive, covering military personnel stationed throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. “It goes into safety, bugs, ticks, water and then we have those that deal with pests and radiology,” Asencio explained. “Having that large footprint to manage and have Soldiers take care of all of it is most intriguing for me.” Managing a wide-reaching European mission while attending a university based in Arizona is no easy feat. Navigating the extreme time zone difference requires strict discipline and a clear set of daily priorities. “It’s a lot of time management. It’s making sure you’re putting in the priorities, your missions into a
timeline of the day,” Asencio said. “Usually, I will come in, work, support my Soldiers, see if they have any needs and after I leave work, I become a college student.” To get through the tough days, Asencio relies on physical fitness, utilizing her lunch breaks to hit the gym, listen to loud music and reset her mind for the afternoon’s tasks. Despite her workload and academic commitments, Asencio’s true passion lies in leading and mentoring the junior enlisted personnel under her charge. She takes her duties as an NCOIC incredibly serious, viewing her leadership role not just as a job, but as an opportunity to shape the future of the Army. She finds immense satisfaction in receiving new Soldiers fresh out of Advanced Individual Training - often away from home for the first time - and guiding them into capable, confident adults and professionals. “You will meet them, they will come out of AIT and you’re basically seeing them become an adult in their own means,” Asencio shared. “Seeing them grow is the best highlight of being an NCOIC.” With her bachelor’s degree nearly complete, Asencio is already looking toward her next objectives. She aims to become a Registered Environmental Health Officer to solidify her professional proficiency in both the military and civilian sectors and eventually pursue a master’s degree. Long-term, she is considering transitioning to the Warrant Officer corps to become a specialized technical expert in her field. When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Asencio highlighted the importance of taking initiative rather than letting life dictate her path and taking pride in the decisions that you make. “Just make your decisions, own your decisions and keep them,” Asencio said.

YOKOTA AIR BASE, JAPAN — A newly developed fitness app is giving service members across the Department of War a single tool to build training programs tailored to their fitness test requirements at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Aug. 11. U.S. Air Force Capt. Zachary Hicks, a family medicine physician and emergency medical services medical director at Yokota Air Base, developed the app to turn fitness requirements into actionable training guidance that service members can use to improve or maintain their readiness. The app goes beyond information and offers actionable guidance that members can use to improve or maintain
their fitness. It also assesses a member's current level, builds a starting program and adjusts over time, with an emphasis on improving weaker areas. “There are apps for individual branches but none that unify them into one app, and this was something I wanted to solve,” Hicks said. The idea traces back four years, when Hicks set out to create a more organized, actionable approach to fitness preparation. When updated fitness standards were released this year, he said it was time to build a solution. “If you are doing well and you want to do great, then this app will help you,” Hicks said. “If you are doing great and wish to maintain that greatness, then this app will help you retain your fitness.”

Story & photos by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe
Col. Anastasia McKay, commander of PHCE, along with her deputy, Col. Ross Coniglio and 1st Sgt. Dana M. Cavazos, met with their German counterparts to cement the agreement. The German delegation was led by Col. Michael Nippgen, the Bundeswehr’s chief veterinarian and Brig. Gen. Prof. Dr. Kehe from the German Armed Forces Medical Supply Command.
Leader ship from U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe and the German military, or Bundeswehr, met Aug. 12-13 to prepare a modernized Memorandum of Understanding, renewing a decades-long partnership focused on military public health and veterinary services. Col. Anastasia McKay, commander of PHCE, along with her deputy, Col. Ross Coniglio and 1st Sgt. Dana M. Cavazos, met with their German counterparts to update the agreement. The German delegation was led by Col. Michael Nippgen, the Bundeswehr’s chief veterinarian and Brig. Gen. Prof. Dr. Kehe from the German Armed Forces Medical Supply Command. The German command, known locally as the Überwachungsstelle Süd, operates much like a specialized military health department. Based in Munich, the unit is responsible for protecting the health of service members across southern Germany. They focus on preventing infectious diseases, overseeing veterinary and food safety and managing military pharmacies and blood supplies. Because both the U.S. and German medical commands operate in the same footprint — specifically across Bavaria and BadenWürttemberg — this modernized partnership acts as a major force
multiplier. It allows both nations to quickly team up and respond to local health threats, environmental hazards and food safety concerns before they impact the force. At the core of this partnership is the “One Health” concept, a teambased approach that recognizes
human, animal and environmental health are all closely connected. By combining U.S. theater assets with German expertise in veterinary medicine and preventive health, the two nations can seamlessly tackle complex health hazards. The alliance also pays off
downrange. Because both U.S. and German public health experts regularly deploy globally to enforce health and food safety standards in austere environments, this agreement helps both commands standardize their field practices. Moving forward, the U.S.
and Germany plan to increase combined tactical training, align their public health guidelines, and conduct shared scientific research. Ultimately, the renewed partnership ensures both nations remain ready to protect the health of their forces today and tomorrow.

BERNKASTEL-KUES from Page 1 Photo by Boris Stroujko/Shutterstock.com
Landshut Castle on a vineyard above BernkastelKues in the Moselle Valley, Germany.
Why Bernkastel-Kues? Bernkastel’s town center is more or less the Platonic ideal of a cute German river village. You’ll find half-timbered buildings, cobblestone streets, shops, restaurants, gaslight lamps, and more. But Bernkastel-Kues isn’t a place where time stands still. These two little towns, connected by a dash and a bridge, are a functioning, thriving part of a wine community. Which means you may have the chance to see something truly magical: vintners at work. During ordinary times, this also means a world-famous harvest-time wine festival. Even if you’re not a wine lover, you’ll still find much to love. Bernkastel-Kues is ripe with hiking and biking opportunities. River cruises are also available, and provide a totally different perspective on the area. And speaking of perspective… The one thing you have to see: Burg Landshut Burg Landshut is the ruined castle that towers above Bernkastel-Kues. You won’t be making the steep, short trek upward just for the castle, though. You’ll be making it for the views, which are astounding. You’ll get a sense of the profound beauty that makes the Mosel Valley so special – the vastness, the steep slopes, the bridge, the buildings, and the idea that people have clung to this land for millennia. It’s remarkable.
Don’t miss: This year’s Bernkastel-Kues Wine Festival Clear your calendar from Sep. 3-7 for the legendary Middle Moselle Wine Festival (Weinfest der Mittelmosel) in BernkastelKues. As one of the region’s largest and most vibrant celebrations, this five-day extravaganza transforms the fairytale, half-timbered old town into a wine lover’s paradise. Best of all, admission to the main festival grounds is completely free. The festival kicks off on Thursday evening with a traditional gathering at the
historic marketplace, setting the stage for a weekend packed with live music across multiple open-air stages. You won’t want to miss Friday’s official coronation of the wine queen, Mosella, or the spectacular grand fireworks display on Saturday night, which beautifully illuminates Landshut Castle and the river valley. On Sunday, the energy peaks during the magnificent parade, featuring a colorful procession of traditional costumes, music clubs, and wine-grower floats. Because central streets close for the event, drivers should head directly across
the river to the designated Kueser Werth festival parking lot (around €7 per day), or look for spaces at the Bernkastel Moselparkplatz. Getting to Bernkastel-Kues By car, Bernkastel-Kues is about a 90-minute drive northwest of Kaiserslautern. If you prefer to take the train, Bernkastel-Kues has no station of its own, so you will want to take a regional train from Kaiserslautern to Wittlich, where you can easily catch a regional bus right into the heart of the old town.
