US Army Sergeant selected for Army-Baylor Master’s Program in Nutrition
Story and photo by Kirk Frady Medical Readiness Command, Europe
SEMBACH – U.S. Army Sgt. Bryan Valerio, a nutrition care specialist assigned to Medical Readiness Command, Europe headquarters applied for, and was recently selected, into the U.S. Army-Baylor University Master’s Program in Nutrition. The mission of the program is developing future Army Registered Dietitian Nutritionists who execute the nutrition mission, enable readiness, and strengthen America’s Army.
Valerio, a native of New York, enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 2019. His first assignment was Fort Bragg, NC, where he served in the artillery as a fire control specialist. Like many young men and women who join the military, Valerio enlisted in the U.S. Army for better opportunities and to further his career, among others.
“I mainly joined the Army to leave behind a legacy for my family,” said Valerio. “The Army provided me an opportunity serve our nation and be part of a cause that is greater than myself.”
During his initial tour at Fort Bragg, Valerio earned his undergraduate degree from Southern New Hampshire University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in general studies.
After serving his initial tour at Fort Bragg in artillery, and with a long-range career goal in mind, Valerio changed his military occupational specialty to nutrition care specialist.
“Applying to the Baylor program ties into my personal goals of eventually opening my own wellness center,” added Valerio. “Working at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as a nutrition care specialist for the past couple of years exposed me to the world of nutrition and health. It was there that I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”
Valerio indicated that some of his most memorable moments, or lessons learned, in the Army were while serving in the airborne unit at Fort Bragg.
“Some of my most memorable moments, or lessons learned, in the Army were while serving in my airborne unit and having to
dig a 6-foot-deep foxhole while training at the Joint Readiness Training Center,” Valerio
added. “That’s where I learned the important lesson of building camaraderie and teamwork among my peers at the small unit level. It takes a team to be successful and you must rely on and trust your fellow Soldiers.”
When it comes to long range personal
goals and future endeavors, Valerio sets a high mark for himself.
“I intend to achieve the rank of Colonel and build my future and help shape the Army’s future in the realm of nutrition sciences,” said Valerio.
After selection into the U.S. Army-Baylor University Master’s Program in Nutrition,
candidates are commissioned as a 2nd Lt. and attend the Army’s Medical Direct Commission Course at Fort Sill, OK, and the Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Sam Houston, TX, where they are introduced to leadership skills, small unit tactics and branch specific capabilities for entry-level officers.

Not your average welcome home: Air Force officer saves life at airport
by Airman Raina Dale Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
JOINT BASE ELMENDORFRICHARDSON, Alaska — After a long flight from London to the Last Frontier, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jeremy Strohmayer, anesthesia flight commander for the 673d Medical Group at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, patiently awaited for his luggage at baggage claim in the Ted Stevens International Airport, Anchorage, Alaska. He, his twin brother and friends recently visited London to celebrate the brothers’ 40th birthdays at a Chicago Bears game.
Strohmayer stood in the airport expecting the night to be like any other. His wife was on her way to pick him up outside. He would grab his luggage, hop in the car with his wife and go home. Little did he know, his plans would change dramatically.
Across the baggage claim, Strohmayer saw a woman slowly collapse to the ground. Unsure of what occurred, he observed the scene before rushing to her side.
Alongside Strohmayer, an emergency department physician from the Alaska Native Medical Center assisted. Together, they aided the woman until Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene.
“My thought process at this point was she’s a patient and this patient needs compressions, so I just fell into the protocol of doing
the job,” said Strohmayer. As the airport medics arrived, Strohmayer performed jaw thrust, a method used to open the airway of an unconscious person, particularly when a spinal injury is suspected, by lifting the jaw forward without tilting the head or neck. He then went into oropharyngeal suctioning, a procedure used to clear secretions from the oral cavity and pharynx using a suction device to maintain a clear airway
and improve oxygenation in individuals who cannot effectively clear their own secretions. After that, he used a bag mask ventilation with oxygen which includes manually squeezing a bag to deliver breaths through a mask placed over the patient's face, often with supplemental oxygen. He inserted a nasopharyngeal airway and informed the EMS team the patient was now alert while he and the team performed CPR process; three rounds
of two minutes of CPR, pulse check, and shock or don’t shock.
“I've helped people medically before, in airports and just out and about, but that was the first time doing a code like this outside of the hospital,” stated Strohmayer.
After proper medical assistance, the woman was able to regain full awareness. Strohmayer briefed and advised the woman’s friend about what occurred. The woman was then taken to the hospital and
Strohmayer headed outside where his wife waited in the car.
“Strohmayer’s actions reflect the highest standard of community service and the Anchorage Airport Police and Fire Department are truly grateful for his efforts,” said Aaron Danielson, chief of AAPFD.
A week later, Strohmayer was awarded Chief’s Recognition, an award from the Chief of AAFPD, for his life-saving intervention while off duty.

The 435th Construction and Training Squadron hosted 150 Airmen from 22 different units from across the continental U.S., Pacific Air Forces and U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa for exercise Silver Flag at Ramstein Air Base, March 19-21.
Silver Flag, held six times a year, brought multiple different training scenarios, such as airfield damage repair, response to conventional and chemical, bio-
logical, radiological and nuclear threats as well as response to simulated downed aircraft. These scenarios reinforce Airmen’s ability to adapt under pressure and emphasizes the importance of the teamwork and communication needed to accomplish wartime tasks.
“Accomplishing wartime task standards was the primary mission of the exercise, specifically for firefighters. The four tasks were tactical casualty combat care, night vision goggle training, military grid reference system training and airport rescue fire-
fighting,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Dominick Kelly, 435th CTS fire and rescue training instructor.
“The portion of the exercise teaches Airmen to think on their feet in uncertain circumstances, having the Airman prioritize between speed and accuracy depending on their assessment of the patients and the severity of the patient’s injuries.”
During the exercise Ramstein served as the forward operating base for three other contingency support locations, building on the concept of Agile Combat Employment and mission com-

mand. Airmen established a fully functioning living support area with utility support systems, allowing the Airmen to simulate a deployed environment providing crucial repetitions on mission essential tasks.
“USAFE Silver Flag provides a premier force support, engineering and logistics readiness contingency training site,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Valerie Kalkwarf, 435th CTS emergency services contingency training section chief. “Our 51 cadre directly support national defense strategy objectives by delivering high caliber,
realistic and specialized warfighter training, enhancing Airmen’s readiness and resilience.”
Throughout the exercise 357 wartime task standards were completed in a simulated conflict-contested environment testing critical thinking, adaptability in response to concurrent threats and successful response to taskings from higher headquarters.
“Silver Flag provides the rigorous training necessary to develop crucial tactics and training that cultivates skills needed for Airmen to succeed in real-world scenarios, together as one team,”
said Kalkwarf. “In today’s complex global landscape, the ability for our Airmen to operate in contested environments is paramount to mission success.”
Exercises like Silver Flag enable Airmen from diverse units, commands and specialties to come together and operate as a cohesive force. The ability to seamlessly integrate equipment, procedures and communication across units ensures that no matter where conflict arises, U.S. forces can respond quickly and effectively, strengthening partnerships and reinforcing readiness.
Tents are set up during exercise Silver Flag at Ramstein Air Base, March 19. The first day of Silver Flag was dedicated to setting up facilities that Airmen would use as a simulated deployed environment.

by Lisa-Marie Hadeen European Parent Teacher Student Association
Under the leadership of President Lisa-Marie Hadeen and Vice President Kristen Smith, the European PTSA proudly hosted the 2025 DODEA Europe Regional Spelling Bee at Ramstein High School, March 15.
This year’s Bee brought together 23 talented spellers from grades 3 to 8, representing five countries — Bahrain, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands — for an exciting day of academic excellence and spirited competition.
Special guest Dr. HowardBarhaney, DODEA Director of
Student Excellence, was in attendance to support and congratulate the students on their incredible achievements.
By Round 16, the competition narrowed to the Top 3 spellers — Max B. (Brussels Unit School), Jackson T. (Garmisch ES/MS), and William B. (Kaiserslautern MS) — with Jackson eliminated during that round. Round 17 featured a tense showdown between Max and William, where Max was eliminated, leaving William B. from Kaiserslautern Middle School as the last speller standing.
William clinched the championship in Round 18, correctly spelling the winning word “collegiality,” after enduring an impressive 17 full rounds of competition.
As the DODEA Europe Champion, William will travel to Washington, D.C., at the end of May to represent our region at the historic 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The success of this event was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of KLSA, Paola who performed the National anthem, Mr. Bade (Pronouncer), Kristen, Ashley and Kenley (Judges Team), the dedicated volunteers from the Ramstein High School student body (lead by Sophia EPTSA Student VP), RHS JROTC, and RHS Robotics Team, who not only supported the event but also provided delicious food and beverages as a fundraiser for their upcoming national competition in Texas this April.

ABC IN KMC: Bruchmühlbach-Miesau
by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Our last stop on our road trip around Kaiserslautern County will lead us to the Union Community of Bruchmühllbach-Miesau, which lies on the western end of the county along the banks of the Glan River.
The Union Community of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau consists of the individual towns and villages of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, Gerhardsbrunn, Lambsborn, Langwieden and Martinshöhe, Vogelbach and Elschbach. Bruchmühlbach-Miesau is the administrative seat. The total union community has about 10,400 inhabitants with about 100 Kaiserslautern Military Community families who also call it their home.
Bruchmühlbach-Miesau is home to the Miesau Army Depot, which was founded in May 1949. At that time, it served as a point to transport and store construction materials for military facilities close to the Glantal train station in neighboring SchönenbergKübelberg, and now houses a multitude of military supplies and equipment.
Celts, Romans and a huge swamp
An old military and trading route existed in the area during prehistoric times. Celtic and Roman tribes settled on the edge of the “Bruch,” a swamp area, and the Westricher Hochfläche (Westrich highlands). Remnants of these early settlements can be found as grave mounds, coins, tools and a menhir called
“Römerstein” (Roman stone).
Administrative areas, referred to as a “Gau” were established during the Franconian Empire starting in the 4th century. During this period the Nahegau, Bliesgau and Wormsgau were within today’s boundaries of the union community under the jurisdiction of the bishops of Mainz, Metz and Worms.
At the beginning of the 12th century, the Kurpfalz region, the Pfalz-Zweibrücken region and Sickingen County all ran together at Bruchmühlbach-Miesau. Due to swampy geological terrain, there were hundreds of ponds and lakes and many families made a living out of breeding fish or handcrafting angler’s equipment, while others in dryer areas were farmers or craftsmen.
From an emperor’s road to a customs hub
Many changes occurred at the beginning of the 19th century when Emperor Napoleon I conquered the area and constructed a permanent road, commonly known as Kaiserstrasse (emperor’s road), today’s L395, which served as a strategic military route. Along the road businesses selling horse wagons boomed and guest houses and inns flourished.
The “Alte Posthalterei” (old postal office) developed into a busy mail hub with a lodging facility where Napoleon stayed overnight on numerous occasions.
Twice in its history, in 1919 after the separation of the Saar area based on the Versailles Peace Treaty, and again in 1948, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau developed into a customs train station with high significance well beyond the region.
Splish, splash
A very popular summer spot is a pool called the “Warmfreibad,” which is located idyllically in the middle of green. You can enjoy the sun, just relax in the large sunbathing area in the shade and take a break from your daily routine. There is a wide wavy slide and a current canal as well as splashing pools for the younger ones with a water temperature of at least 24 C (75 F).
Ready for spring cleaning?
The Staubsauger Museum (vacuum cleaner) in Miesau features a wide selection of vacuum models throughout the decades. Since 1990 Alois Steffgen has been a specialist for cleaning and vacuuming technology and during his career he was inspired to open a museum. In 1993 he received an inquiry from an 83-yearold carpenter who had a model Nilfisk S 59 vacuum cleaner that ran on 210 watts. He had bought the machine from his boss in the 1930s and as he couldn’t take it with him when fleeing during World War II, he buried it in the garden for a year. Vacuum cleaners were a luxury in the early 1900s and especially after World War II. Upon his return he dug it out, and although it was rusty, it still worked, and he used it until 1993.
Biking and hiking
There are several exciting biking and mountain biking trails that start in Bruchmühlbach-Miesau. The Fritz-Claus-Hütte Burg Nanstein Loop, the Panarama View Mirador-Ziegelberg Loop and the Höcherturm – Ohmbachsee Loop are a few examples. In addition,
hiking enthusiasts have several picturesque trails to choose from. The Natural Habitat Elendsklamm is a certified and recommended German route which will lead you through an impressing “jungle.”
Saddle up
When the Riding and Driving Club in Miesau held its first tournament on a makeshift dirt track within today’s Miesau Army Depot premises in 1922, little could it know that the races would develop and become wellknown throughout Germany. Three years later, a spectators’ grandstand was completed, and races took place every Pentecost weekend up to the war. The track was destroyed during the war but rebuilt and in 1974 races commenced again. Tournaments take place every year on the Pentecostal weekend in May or June and have developed into one of the leading equestrian festivities in Germany.
Heimatmuseum and a Happy Miller
The small museum on the former hayloft in Lambsborn displays historic agricultural tools and objects traditionally used on a farm for centuries. At the vintage farmhouse you can enjoy hands-on experiences of the life and times of a farmer and get a glimpse of potatoes, schnapps distilling and its history. Or you might want to visit a traditional mill. The Tausend Mühle in Bruchmühlbach is one of the last grain mills in the region and looks upon a 400year ever changing history. The mill built in 1598 had a total of 26 owners, some of them rather
obscure and whimsical people, who carried out their tasks as millers in a “hit or miss” way. Today the mill complex houses a small mill store where you can buy flour and regional culinary specialties.
Festivals and fun
The Wikingerfest in Elschbach in mid-September is a highlight and invites you to step back into the wild days of the Vikings and experience games, where ferocious men and women in traditional attire hurl stones and compete in tug-of-war. Other events include a traditional “Kerwe,” a village fest in every individual town or village, and in Miesau at the end of October. The Nikolausmarkt and the Christmas Market with smaller ones in the individual villages, will get you into the holiday spirit.
Fun facts:
Beavers are back in town! In the year 2000 there were only three beavers left in RheinlandPfalz. A “castle” built by a beaver family was discovered close to Autobahn A6 near Bruchmühlbach in June 2022 and about 300 of the rodents call the area home today.
The name of the River Glan is of Celtic origin and means “light, clear, shining, flowing” and is derived from the Celtic goddess Glanis.

Celebrating 80 years of partnership with German allies in Baumholder
Story and photos by Bernd Mai U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs
The 16th Sustainment Brigade together with the City of Baumholder organized a celebration in Baumholder, March 18, commemorating 80 years of partnership between the U.S. military and the Baumholder community. The event featured a joint military parade with U.S. and German Soldiers. The parade was led by the commander of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, Col. Matthew Alexander, City Mayor Günther Jung, District Mayor Bernd Alsfasser, Col. Olaf Tuneke, Commander of the German Artillery School, and Capt. Frank Zimmer deputy Commander of the Baumholder Military Training Area along with the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Marching Band, honoring the enduring friendship between the two nations.
They marched through the city from the Main Gate to the Brühl Stadion. It was a parade the kind of which had not been seen in the streets of Baumholder since the 1960s. Hundreds of spectators lined the roadside and celebrated the soldiers. Students at the local Elementary School (Grundschule Westrich) cheered them on from the schoolyard with handmade German and U.S. flags. At the Brühl Stadion the Soldiers lined up, the band played the German and U.S., national anthem and the commander of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, Col. Alexander, gave a short but emotional speech, thanking the numerous Baumholder residents and visitors who had followed the parade formation for their decades of unique friendship.
“We’re not just looking back; we’re also looking forward to where we’re going,” said Col. Alexander.
“Baumholder is not only one of the largest U.S. Military bases in Europe, but also unique,” he emphasized. Over 80 years, a mutual partnership has developed, they have come together, and lasting friendships have developed. This is mainly due to the citizens of the city and the two mayors in the city and the district, the U.S. commander stated and exclaimed: “Thank you for your hospitality!”
Mayor Günther Jung then took a brief look at history and March 18, 1945, when the first U.S. soldiers entered the city, while most Baumholder residents waited in fear and uncertainty for the foreign soldiers and held out in their cellars. But, there was also a sense of relief. The Wehrmacht had planned to delay the advance of the Americans in the area of Baumholder for a long time. Antitank ditches were dug out, and anti-tank guns were brought into position. The Infantry received anti-tank weapons. Fortunately, there was a turn of the tide. Just in time, German soldiers with-

drew towards Kusel and the Glantal valley, so Baumholder was saved from large battle actions. U.S. soldiers of the 302nd Infantry Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division arrived on March 18, 1945, at about 3 p.m. in Baumholder and the people got to see people with dark skin for the first time. The residents, dominantly female, were afraid. Intimidated by the propaganda of the Nazi regime, thoughts arose such that they will shoot us now and the dark soldiers are maneaters and will harm us. However, this uncertainty quickly turned into a close bond, because they weren’t just handing out chewing gum and chocolate which quickly made the U.S. troops popular; they also kept order in an uncertain time.
Upon order of the American command, German groups had to fill in the tank ditches. The abandoned ammunition was gathered and sunk into the Baumholder lake. The residents had to turn in weapons of all types, binoculars,
cameras, typewriters, radios and clocks. Street signs were dismantled, and houses and apartments were requisitioned and quartered by American soldiers. Wine that was stored in the basements and hard liquor were desired spoils. Therefore, it happened that soldiers had slept on a bed-couch in a requisitioned apartment for some weeks without knowing that there were 30 bottles of wine inside of it. After the release of the dwelling, it was a great joy for the owner.
Many Baumholder residents regretted the fact that the U.S. presence ended for the time being in July 1945. However, the U.S. soldiers returned in 1951 as the Cold War escalated - and have remained to this day. “I hope they stay for many more decades,” said Jung at the end of his speech and thanked Col. Alexander for organizing this parade. The idea was initiated by Melanie and Bernd Mai, who suggested the commemorative march through the city to Col. Alexander and were paramount in the organization.

Michigan Guard Team Competes at Biathlon Championship
by 2nd Lt. Paige Bodine Michigan National Guard
The Michigan National Guard Biathlon Team competed at the Chief National Guard Bureau Biathlon Championship at Mount Itasca, Minnesota, from Feb. 28-March 5.
The annual event brings together top competitors from across the country in an intense test of endurance, marksmanship and skiing ability. Among those competitors was Capt. Austin DeOrio, who took an unconventional path to the sport.
Three years ago, DeOrio spotted an announcement in a fragmentary order and decided to give the National Guard Biathlon Team a shot. Though he had experience with downhill skiing and was a strong marksman, he had never tried cross-country skiing. A biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle marksmanship. Athletes must ski through a demanding course while stopping at intervals to shoot targets, requiring both endurance and precision under pressure.
“I looked like Bambi the first time I tried skiing,” DeOrio joked.
CROSSWORD
Now in his second year of competition, after missing last season due to deployment, DeOrio has found his footing. Competing alongside fellow Michigan National Guard Soldiers, he has embraced the challenge of balancing rigorous biathlon training with the demands of regular drills and annual training.
Now in its 49th year, the championship featured nearly 100 Guard members from 18 states competing in four races, from 4.5 to 15 kilometers.
The biathlon is a unique sport, requiring athletes to ski a loop, shoot five targets from a prone position, ski another loop and then shoot five more targets from a standing position. Missed shots mean extra laps, making precision just as important as speed.
Training for the sport is challenging, especially in Michigan, which lacks a dedicated biathlon range.
“We have to drive to Wisconsin to access a range,” DeOrio said. “We try to get out and ski on our own as much as possible, but a lot of it comes down to individual effort and preparation.”
Despite the obstacles, the
Michigan National Guard Biathlon Team continues to make an impact. Competitors often meet for the first time on race day, making their teamwork and adaptability all the more impressive.
“For me, it’s about skiing straight without falling, keeping my heart rate low, pushing up the hills and shooting straight,” DeOrio said.
The competition was fierce, with states like Vermont, Minnesota and Wisconsin consistently dominating the leaderboards. Michigan’s athletes, however, held their own.
Staff Sgts. David Dohnal and Michael Merfert and Capt. Bradford Watkins competed in the men’s open class, finishing sixth in the relay and coming close to a podium spot with a fourth-place finish in the patrol race. Watkins, a first-year competitor with a background in cross-country skiing, led the team, placing 18th in the 10-kilometer sprint and 12.5-km pursuit races. Dohnal and Merfert, both in their third year of competition, also posted personal bests.
In the novice category, Sgt. Shelby Flory and DeOrio returned for their second year. Flory placed eighth in the female novice sprint
Michigan National Guard Biathlon Team members compete at the Chief National Guard Bureau Biathlon Competition, held this year at the Mount Itasca Winter Sports Center in Coleraine, Minn., from Feb. 28-March 5. The annual competition is held in one of three host states, Minnesota, Utah and Vermont, and is open to National Guard members in all 54 states and territories.
and pursuit races, later teaming up with Colorado and Rhode Island competitors to finish second in the novice relay. DeOrio placed 10th in the men’s novice sprint and pursuit
races and found success in team events, earning first place in the composite relay and second in the novice patrol race alongside competitors from Idaho.

Borussia Dortmund is a soccer powerhouse with one of the most passionate and loyal fan bases on the planet. But even if sport isn’t your thing, this city of almost 600,000 people is filled with great things to do — and you may even come away a soccer fan after your visit!
In honor of Germany’s favorite sport, then, here are 11 ways (because, ahem, soccer sides have 11 people) to have a blast in Dortmund.
1. Visit the German Football Museum
Germans love football. Perhaps you’ve noticed. From the largest cities to the smallest villages, you can find clubs, fields, and humans of all shapes and sizes chasing after a ball. German teams are quite good, too. The men have four World Cup victories, the women have two, and teams like Dortmund and Bayern Munich routinely compete for Champions League top spots. The German Football Museum covers all of that, and much, much more. Even if you don’t like football, this is a mustsee. It’s beautiful, interactive, entertaining, and does a great job of connecting visitors to German football culture.
2. Check out the Dortmunder U Spoiler alert: this is not a university. But it’s kind of like a university, in that it offers a variety of cool things to do in one space: workshops, exhibitions, movies, restaurants, a lookout floor. And it does have a super photo-worthy giant “U” on top of the building, which was once a brewery. Located near the train station, the U is well worth a visit. Admission to most everything is free, and it’s open every day except Monday.
3. Take a guided tour of Signal Iduna Park
We’re going to circle back to football here. If you have yet to tour a European professional soccer stadium, you should. And Signal Iduna (a German financial services company that has naming rights to the stadium) Park is an awesome place to see. It is massive (seats over 80,000 people), cloaked in yellow and black, and drips with history. Take a private tour, and you will get access to the locker room, the hallowed halls, and other cool places that most people will never see. Plus, no worries about traffic!
4. Go to the Zoo
The Dortmund Zoo may not be the biggest zoo of all time, but it is done exceedingly well. It’s fun, accessible, great for kids and families, and super well done
for the animals. If you’re a fan of lions, rhinos, giraffes, sloths, jaguars, or other furry (and not furry) creatures, the Dortmund zoo is for you. Open daily between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., adults can get in for €11.50 and kids for €7.
5. Hit the Natural History Museum
Speaking of wild things, Dortmund has a natural history museum. This place is awesome. It has the requisite cool stuff, including dinosaur skeletons (which never get old, no pun intended), a number of aquariums, minerals, and a solid gift shop. Most of what is there is local, too: since Dortmund was once heavily engaged in the coal industry, a lot of the fossils were found nearby.
6. Wander the Old City
Like any self-respecting German city, Dortmund has an excellent downtown pedestrian zone. If you’re into shopping, you can do some serious business here: the Thier Gallery is a top-notch mall.
Same goes for history. In addition to the usual array of beautifully styled buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, St. Reinhold’s Church opened around the same time as the Old Market Square was really coming into its own, which is to say about 800 years ago. Which is kind of amazing.
7. Visit the Botanical Garden
Botanical gardens seem especially important in a world where everyone is more or less connected 24/7. There is something soothing about being in nature, and seeing how we can work with (and have worked with) our natural surroundings. This is totally true for Dortmund’s Rombergpark botanical garden. Located south of the city (and very near the zoo, so you can double up!), the botanical garden is outstanding, especially on a nice day. And even on a lessthan-nice day.
8. Attend a Dortmund Match
Yep, we’re back here again, in the football realm. Good to know: actually getting tickets to a home Dortmund match is often complicated (because the fans are that crazy about their team). But if you can get tickets, do it. It is an incredible experience. The nonstop noise, the love, the frenzy that happens when Dortmund scores a goal? There’s nothing like it. Not the NFL, not college football, nothing. Highly recommended.
9. Relax in Westfalen Park
All that soccer stuff can wear you out. Find a bench or a patch of grass (plentiful!) in Westfalen Park, which is sublime in the spring and summer. It’s also huge — about three times the size of Dortmund’s zoo. So if you want
solitude, you can find it. And if you feel like napping? Go for it. Dortmunders are unfailingly polite. They will respect your need for relaxation.
10. Eat at a Michelin-recognized restaurant
Who knew? Dortmund, the old coal city, has 14 Michelinrecognized restaurants. Not all of them are hyper-expensive, either. Gasthaus Stromberg and Fachwerk are both reasonably priced (as far as these things go) and excellent. Plus, the vibe is never over-the-top fancy. Which is perfect for a place like Dortmund.
11. Marvel at Dortmund’s industrial past
Technically known as Zeche Zollern, Dortmund’s industrial museum is well worth your time. You can learn about Dortmund’s days as an industrial powerhouse. You may also come away a little bit more grateful for how nice it is to not be a coal miner. As a bonus, it’s also housed in a distinctive, beautiful building. Closed Mondays, the museum is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all other days.
Getting to Dortmund By car, Dortmund is about 3.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3 hours from Wiesbaden, and 5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
