To celebrate America’s 250th birthday this year, the Arkansas National Guard enlisted 250 recruits during a ceremony at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History in Little Rock, Arkansas, April 11.
“This ceremony recognizes America’s 250th birthday in Arkansas while honoring the military service that helped secure our independence,” said Army Brig. Gen. Chad Bridges, Arkansas’ adjutant general. “The colonial militias — the predecessors of today's National Guard — stood against the British Army at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, and the Continental Congress established the Army two months later on June 14, 1775. Arkansas also has a direct Revolutionary War connection through the 1783 battle at Arkansas Post, recognized as
the only Revolutionary War battle fought in present-day Arkansas.”
The 250 recruits represent the nearly 1,300 guardsmen that both the Arkansas Army and Air National Guard recruit annually into their respective brigades and wings.
The Arkansas National Guard traces its roots to 1804, one year after the Louisiana Purchase.
The legislative body governing the Indiana Territory, of which Arkansas was a part, enacted a law making most males liable for military service, according to the Arkansas National Guard Museum website.
Throughout its history, the Arkansas National Guard has answered the call in times of war, natural disasters and other domestic emergencies. Its legacy reflects the service of Arkansans who have balanced civilian lives with military duty, exemplifying the citizensoldier ethos that has defined the nation since its founding.

Senior Airman Jason Jones Jr. 86th Airlift Wing
Child and youth programs took center stage as Vilma M. Williams, senior manager for the Early Childhood Education Competency and Special Populations Program at the Council for Professional Recognition toured child and youth programs on Ramstein Air Base, April 16.
The Council for Professional Recognition is an organization dedicated to improving early childhood education from birth to five years old. It offers aspiring childhood educators competency-based accreditation such as the Child Development Associate and Military School Age credentials.
“[The council] exists because we want a future where children have competent, educated and skillful teachers, whether they are in their early childhood programs or in their youth programs,” Williams said. “Bottom line, our work is the children’s education and their families.”

Through continuous credential renewal, the council ensures educators uphold high standards, supporting the quality of education and development for military children.

“The CDA and MSA are so successful because they require you to keep up with the latest updates,” Williams said. “Things are evolving. That’s why educators have to constantly keep learning: professional development does not stop, it’s continuous.”
The Council for Professional Recognition not only positively impacts the lives and education of military children, but the welfare of military spouses as well.
“As a military spouse, it’s hard to move from base to base,” said Christina Morris, lead training and curriculum specialist. “One of the things we can offer is to start working in a child development center or a school age program to give spouses an opportunity for growth and professional development. By being able to take the training we get and turning it into a credential, you’re growing military spouses and dependents.”
During her visit, Williams recognized individuals who have earned their CDA and MSA’s as well as those who are working to earn their credentials.
“We have amazing providers and educators in our programs,” Morris said. “Highlighting what they do and the work they put into it everyday is so important to advocate for our people because people don’t see their work.”
In the end, Williams’ visit served to strengthen the commitment from the council to the military community.
“Children are the future,” Williams said. “It’s important that we not only have these programs, but help develop them to be the best they can be.”

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation welcomed 70 military-connected children at the former Sembach Elementary School theater April 14 for “Crowns & Capes” — an interactive event featuring Disney characters come to life.
In recognition of the Month of the Military Child, Armed Forces Entertainment actors treated audiences to an immersive themed showing of Moana. The experience brought the story to life, allowing young attendees to engage with the film in a way that blended imagination, music and storytelling.
“Crowns & Capes” also visited Baumholder, offering “superhero training” at the Hall of Champions along with the immersive Moana movie experience at the Rheinlander Community Club on Smith Barracks.
The Sembach event transformed the historic theater into a vibrant, kid-friendly environment filled with popcorn, laughter and excitement, highlighting the importance of community and connection.
Leaders emphasized that events like these go beyond entertainment.
“It’s about taking care of our most important assets — our children,” one organizer noted. “Behind every mission is a family and today was about them.”
Armed Forces Entertainment tours like “Crowns & Capes” are aimed at supporting military families by delivering high-quality entertainment experiences to overseas communities. The program focuses on creating memorable moments for children, emphasizing creativity, resilience and the unique role military youth play in supporting the mission.

by 86th Airlift Wing Host Nation Office / Public Affairs
The night from April 30 to May 1 is known as “Walpurgisnacht” or “Hexennacht” in our region, so beware the “witches” are out there!
It is not considered an official holiday but is still a noteworthy event for reasons that will become clear in a second.
In German folklore Walpurgisnacht is heavily linked to witchcraft and the supernatural. It is said that witches chose this day to dance on the peaks of hills and plague the populace by causing mischief. Bonfire and celebrations take place on Brocken, a mountain in eastern Germany.
The Brocken (Blocksberg) is the highest peak in the Harz mountains and long associated with uncanny weather, fog, and the Brocken spectra optical phenomenon, which helped fuel tales of supernatural gatherings. Its remoteness and frequent cloud cover made it an ideal setting for stories of witches meeting there to dance, feast, and ride through the night.
In our region, kids love the evening which is often simply called “Hexennacht”
(witches’ night). You can think of it as a mix between Halloween and April Fools. A big part of the “holiday” is playing pranks on unsuspecting people. Usually this is limited to minor nuisances like spraying shaving cream on door handles and wrapping lamp posts in toilet paper.
On occasion some people might overdo it with the pranks. Just to be on the safe side, do not leave items, such as trash cans or flowerpots, out in your front yard as people might carry them off. If you own a garage, park your car inside to avoid cleaning up shaving cream in the morning or decorative toilet paper on the antenna or mirrors.
Sometimes kids will drape toilet paper across the street and demand a toll. Of course, you are not required to pay it, but just a few cents will spare you the pleading and the puppy eyes.
Some villages hold dance events such as “Tanz in den Mai” with music and a jolly time. May poles, consisting of poles neatly decorated with colorful ribbons, may be displayed in towns and villages. Young people will guard the poles to avoid them being “stolen” by thieves from neighboring villages, thought to be a total disgrace if the pole is lost.

May Day
May Day blends ancient spring rites and modern labor politics across Europe.
In Germany it is both a folk festival with May poles and Walpurgis traditions and a political day of labor demonstrations dating from the late 19th century.
May Day has roots in pre-Christian spring and fertility festivals such as the Roman Floralia and Celtic Beltane, where communities celebrated renewal with flowers, bonfires, and rites intended to secure fertility for crops and people. Over centuries these seasonal customs evolved into popular practices like “bringing in the May,” crowning a May Queen, and erecting the May pole, which became widespread in medieval and early modern Europe.
Rise of International Workers’ Day
A separate but overlapping tradition emerged in the 19th century: May 1 as International Workers’ Day grew from labor agitation for the eight-hour day, notably after the 1886 Chicago demonstrations and subsequent international labor mobilization. European socialist and trade-union movements adopted May 1 for rallies, strikes, and political demands; by the early 20th century the date was established across many countries as a day of labor solidarity.
In Germany the labor meaning of May Day became prominent after 1890, when social democrats and unions promoted the date; the holiday was later co-opted by the Nazi regime as the “Day of National Labor,” and after 1945 it was reclaimed in democratic contexts as “Tag der Arbeit” combining political demonstrations with folk festivities. Today German May Day often features both trade-union marches and local cultural events, and in some cities clashes between protesters and police have also become part of the modern landscape.
Across Europe the balance between springtime celebration and labor politics varies by country: in parts of northern and central Europe seasonal rites remain strong, while in industrialized urban centers May Day is primarily a day for labor rallies, social justice campaigns, and public holidays. The dual heritage — ancient festival and modern labor commemoration — explains why May Day continues to be both festive and politically charged.
Friday, May 1 is a public holiday in Germany with stores and official businesses closed in observation of the occasion.

by Brian Lamar 21st Theater Sustainment Command
Sometimes all it takes is a caring mentor to spark a passion that will shape the rest of a young person’s life.
According to Col. Jose Medina, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s G4, his passion was ignited long ago by a high school coach. His interactions with his coach gave him the blueprints to navigate and build a successful life and career, which has culminated so far in his promotion ceremony to the rank of Colonel during a ceremony on 13 April at Panzer Kaserne.
“I started out a little rough. I didn’t really like school. I didn’t apply myself,” said Medina. “In the latter part of my middle school, I started getting into sports. Once I got to Edinburg North High School in 1991, a high school coach, Homero “Homer” Martinez, who continues to be my mentor and whom I consider to be a second dad, asked me if I wanted to run.”
Because of his passion for running, Medina began applying himself in school and making an effort to keep his grades up and stay on the team.
“I ended up graduating as an A/B student. When I graduated, that didn’t end the relationship with my high school coach. He continued to be, and still is, my mentor,” said Medina. “When my father passed away nine years ago, he was there for me, and I am still learning from his wisdom even today.”
While running for the University of Texas-Pan American track team and eventually working through the ranks in his military career, those blueprints for success were seared into Medina’s mind every step of the way.
“Coach Martinez would always teach and reiterate to me that how much you put into a thing is how much you are going to get out of it,” said Medina. “I carry those instructions with me even today. I learned to give it my

all, so I can keep learning and growing. That advice has helped me be a better person, a better family man.”
According to Medina, who is a father of five, putting family first is important throughout your career because once you are done with the Army, your family will still be there. There have been challenges for Medina, who admits to having missed anniversaries, birthdays, and funerals, but ensuring that available time is placed into family is an investment in what makes life great.
Medina also credits another Texas native, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Landis Maddox, who is the director of the Headquarters Department of the Army G-43/5/7 (Operations, Readiness,
Plans, Integration, & Strategy) division.
“General Maddox is the one who taught me about the side of the military on how to be a better professional and how to be a better team player. He taught me the value of networking, making sure that you are building bridges and maintaining those relationships by being a team player,” said Medina.
These days, Medina is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing Army strategy, policy, plans, and programming for logistics and sustainment to enable total Army readiness in the European Theater, while keeping an innovative eye for opportunities for transformation of logistics and sustainment for future fights.
“My original goal when I joined all those years ago was to be a company commander. That happened long ago. My plan is to continue until I finish dedicating 30 years to my country. I made the alternative list for a senior service college. Just as usual, I am here to serve the needs of the Army, and as long as I am still having fun, I will keep serving,” said Medina.
According to Medina, he is looking forward to continuing to make an impact where he can, in and out of uniform, with a focus on providing that fatherly mentorship for his next generation, including Medina’s oldest, who is currently a lieutenant in the nursing corps at Fort Bliss, and a 19-year-old on a university track team in Texas.

Senior leaders from across the theater gathered for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Senior Leaders Forum, April 7–10, at the Workforce Development Center on Sembach Kaserne to align priorities and assess operations in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa and U.S. European Command objectives.
Hosted by Maj. Gen. Michael B. Lalor, commanding general of the 21st TSC, the forum brought together commanders, senior enlisted leaders and key staff to discuss the state of the command and prepare for future operations supporting large-scale combat.
As the Army’s primary sustainment command for U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the 21st TSC enables deterrence, strengthens interoperability with allies and sustains forward-postured forces across the region.
During his opening remarks, Lalor highlighted the command’s operational tempo and recent accomplishments, emphasizing sustainment as a critical enabler of combat power.
“Our teams have successfully executed sustainment missions across Europe over the past six month,” Lalor said. “We’ve delivered more than 2 million gallons of fuel and executed 14 RSOMs (reception, staging, onward movement). The 21st TSC continues to
These efforts support rotational and forward forces aligned with EUCOM priorities, ensuring combat-credible capabilities are positioned rapidly across the theater.
“Our ability to move equipment across ports, rail and ground networks demonstrates the strength of our theater-opening capability and the expertise of our Soldiers and civilians,” Lalor said.
“It’s important to bring the team together to talk, collaborate and build cohesion,” said Col. William Prince, chief of staff for the 21st TSC. “Knowing the people to your left and right strengthens the organization.”
The forum also highlighted modernization efforts aligned with Army and theater priorities, including the fielding of advanced bulk fuel distribution systems and continued development of the Advanced Manufacturing Strategy and Innovation Center, which supports readiness by producing critical parts forward in theater.
Looking ahead, Lalor outlined priorities for the next six months, including preparations for exercise SWORD 26, a key opportunity to integrate sustainment capabilities into large-scale, multidomain operations alongside allies and partners.
“Our primary focus is, and will continue to be, setting and supporting the European theater,” Lalor said. “We will continue to train to execute theater opening, distribu-
tion and closing.”
Senior leaders reinforced the importance of training and leader development across formations.
“The command’s priorities remain consistent: people, warfighting, readiness, innovation and connection,” said Col. Michael Lindley, deputy commander of the 21st TSC.
Leaders also emphasized interoperability and burden-sharing across the alliance, particularly through bilateral agreements that enhance efficiency and strengthen multinational sustainment frameworks.
“We are committed to ensuring our formations are ready to operate in contested environments and building a resilient and adaptive sustainment network,” Lindley said. “Our brigades are developing experts, investing in our teams and building formations with the capabilities to meet the demands of the warfighter.”
Throughout the forum, participants engaged in sessions focused on sustainment innovation, data integration and building resilient logistics networks capable of supporting dispersed operations across EUCOM.
Senior enlisted leadership emphasized the importance of maintaining connections beyond the forum.
“Do not allow the Senior Leader Forum to become the sole touchpoint for command team engagement, said Command Sgt. Maj. Denise Malave, senior enlisted adviser for the 21st TSC.”Use it as a start point, not a finish line. Continue to deliberately connect across formations, strengthen
relationships, and maintain open lines of communication at every echelon to better improve training, leader development, and standards across the theater.”
The forum provided leaders an opportunity to synchronize efforts and ensure the command remains ready to support U.S. Army Europe and Africa, EUCOM and allied forces.

by boiling for two to three minutes. Remove and put in water bath. Peel with fingers after they have cooled. Then brown in a pan with butter. Cover with lid as you prepare the meat.
Tenderize veal steaks, then brown in butter. Roast on both sides for 2 minutes, then place them in an oven at 300 Fahrenheit for 6-8 minutes.
To prepare the carrots, let the butter melt in a pot. As it starts to bubble, add sugar and allow to caramelize. Add carrots and seasoning. Add one bottle of mineral water and allow to simmer for 8-10 minutes.
To finish tomatoes, add butter to a pot and allow to melt, then add shallots. Before adding broth, allow shallots to get glassy. Then add tomatoes and raspberry vinegar. Allow to simmer on low heat with a lid for 6-7 minutes.
On oven safe serving plates, build your steak with 3 stalks of asparagus and approximately 1-2 tablespoons of Hollandaise sauce on top of the asparagus, in the center of the plate. Broil in oven on top rack until the Hollandaise sauce gets a nice brown color.
Portion out tomatoes and carrots for 4 plates. Place the tomatoes on one side of the plate and the carrots on the other side. Leave the veal in the center.

journey with Spain alone, the experience often begins much further east. Routes like the Jakobsweg in Germany have guided pilgrims across Europe for centuries, forming the early stages of what becomes a deeply personal and transformative journey.
The Connection: Jakobsweg and the Camino
The Jakobsweg (literally “Jacob’s Way”) represents Germany’s contribution to this extensive pilgrimage network. Its trails weave across the country, connecting pilgrims from Northern and Eastern Europe to the major routes that pass through France and ultimately into Spain.
Many of these paths merge into the Camino Francés via historic French routes such as the Via Podiensis, Via Turonensis, Via Lemovicensis, and Via Tolosana. From St. Jean Pied-de-Port, pilgrims cross the Pyrenees and continue roughly 780 kilometers to Santiago de Compostela.
Depending on where you begin in Germany, the total journey can exceed 2,500 to 3,000 kilometers, a commitment that often takes months to complete.
A Journey Through History
The Camino’s origins date back to the early 9th century, when pilgrims visited the relics of St. James. By the 11th and 12th centuries, the pilgrimage had become one of the most important in Christendom, rivaling Rome and Jerusalem.
Over time, routes were formalized, infrastructure developed, and guides like the Codex Calixtinus helped pilgrims navigate the journey. Though interest declined after the Reformation, the Camino has experienced a powerful revival in recent decades, attracting people from all walks of life.
Official Pilgrimage Rules and the Credencial
For those wishing to complete the Camino in an official sense, the journey is tied to earning the Compostela, a certificate awarded in Santiago de Compostela. To qualify,

pilgrims must walk at least the final 100 kilometers (or cycle 200 kilometers) into the city, demonstrating that they have completed a meaningful portion of the route.
Central to this process is the Credencial, or pilgrim passport. This small booklet serves as both identification and a record of your journey. Along the route, pilgrims collect stamps, which are known as sellos, at least twice daily during the final stretch to prove their progress.
Obtaining a Credencial is relatively straightforward. Many pilgrims acquire one before starting their journey through official Camino associations in their home country, local pilgrimage societies, or even certain

churches. They are also widely available at major starting points along the route, including pilgrim hostels (albergues), tourist offices, and cathedrals. For those starting in popular locations like St. Jean Pied-de-Port or Porto, obtaining one on arrival is typically quick and easy.
While the Camino carries a strong sense of tradition and simplicity, the modern experience is supported by a well-developed infrastructure that makes the journey accessible.
Accommodation is primarily found in albergues, which range from basic dormitorystyle lodgings to more comfortable private
options. These are specifically designed for pilgrims and are widely available along most major routes. Unlike in centuries past, it is not common practice to seek lodging from private homes, as the network of hostels provides reliable and affordable alternatives.
Planning your daily stages is an important part of the experience. Most pilgrims walk between 20 and 30 kilometers per day, depending on fitness, terrain, and weather. While it’s possible to plan extensively in advance, many choose a more flexible approach and decide each day’s destination based on how they feel.
Food and supplies are generally easy to find, especially on popular routes like the

Camino Francés, where villages appear regularly. Pilgrim menus, offering simple and affordable multi-course meals, are a staple along the way.
Terrain and Routes
One of the most compelling aspects of the Camino is the way the terrain shifts dramatically across regions, offering a constantly changing backdrop that keeps the journey engaging.
Crossing the Pyrenees at the start of the Camino Francés is both difficult and rewarding, with steep climbs and breathtaking mountain views that immediately immerse you in the experience. Further along, the Meseta presents a stark contrast: Vast, open plains where the horizon stretches endlessly, inviting quiet reflection and mental endurance.
Meanwhile, routes like the Camino del Norte offer dramatic coastal scenery, with rugged cliffs, ocean views, and the rhythmic sound of waves accompanying your steps. Each of the major routes — whether it’s the popular Camino Francés, the scenic Camino Portugués, the wild Camino del Norte, or the more rugged Camino Primitivo — offers a distinct experience. Whether you’re seeking solitude, cultural immersion, or physical challenge, there is a path that meets you where you are.
Essential Gear
Before setting out, it’s important to under-
stand that the Camino is not a casual stroll.
It is a physically demanding, multi-day (or multi-week) journey that requires serious preparation.
Recommended Gear:
• Footwear: Broken-in trail running shoes or light hiking boots
• Clothing: Lightweight, moisture-wicking layers and a waterproof jacket
• Walking sticks: Helpful for balance and reducing strain on knees
• Backpack: 30–40 liters, ideally no more than 10 percent of your body weight
• Essentials: First-aid kit (especially blister care), headlamp, water system, sun protection, and quick-dry towel
Best Time for the Pilgrimage
Timing can significantly shape the experience. Spring (April to May) is a popular choice, offering mild temperatures and blooming landscapes, though rain is fairly common. Summer (June to August) brings long, sunny days and fully open services, but also larger crowds and intense heat. Autumn (September to October) is often considered one of the best times to walk, with comfortable weather, fewer pilgrims, and a rich seasonal atmosphere, though some accommodations begin to close toward the end of October. Winter presents real challenges, including cold temperatures, snow in mountainous areas, and limited services along the route.
