April 4 marked 76 years of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The United States became pointedly vested in the security and future of Europe after the Berlin Blockade and the communist coup in Czechoslovakia in 1948. The actions of communist aggression prompted the U.S. to look at Europe differently. Talks between the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and others began for a potential larger diplomatic and military alliance. Secretary of State Dean Acheson signed the treaty on April 4, 1949 on behalf of the U.S., and the U.S. Senate ratified the treaty on July 21, 1949, (with a vote of 83-13). Finally, President Truman and Secretary Acheson signed the Instrument of Accession, making the United States a founding member of NATO.
In addition to the states mentioned above, the original NATO treaty was also signed by Canada, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. U.S. President Harry
S. Truman stated on Aug. 24, 1949: “By this treaty we are not only seeking to establish freedom from aggression and from the use of force in the North Atlantic community, but we are also actively striving to promote and preserve peace throughout the world.”
Since NATO’s inception, the 86th, in all its designations, has continuously worked alongside its Allies for over 76 years. Even before NATO, the U.S. Air Force and the 86th Fighter Wing collaborated and partnered with the United Kingdom, France, and Canada for the Berlin Airlift and Operation VITTLES. Just months after the establishment of NATO, the 86th Fighter Wing at Neubiberg Air Base, hosted members from the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Air Force to be official observers of “Exercise Harvest,” a U.S. European Command Joint Maneuver, in September 1949. When the 86th received the theater’s first F-86 Sabres in the early 1950s, the wing’s pilots and maintenance personnel trained Allies and partners on the new jet fighters.
Throughout the twentieth cen-
tury and well into the twentyfirst century, the United States’ relationship with NATO, and the close ties the 86th started and maintained with its Allies and partners, remain the foundation of peace, deterrence, and kinship. The 86th Airlift Wing and Ramstein Air Base, cannot fulfill its mission to “Project Power and Create Communities” without our NATO Allies and partners. Present on Ramstein Air Base since 1974, NATO’s Allied Air Command enriches our operations and communities, openly shares their cultures (and goods), and provides unique opportunities for the wing unlike anywhere else in the world.
NATO continues to grow, its most recent addition in 2024 with Sweden. The Ministry of Defence (United Kingdom) released a video reel to commemorate the anniversary, and their text reads: “One mission: Working together to keep people safe — in the air, on land, at sea, and in cyberspace. NATO Allies work side by side for security, peace, and freedom. 76 years of collective defense via 1000+ exercises and have protected over one billion people.”
Stronger Together.
Month of the Military Child was established in 1986 by then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger to recognize and honor the unique contributions and sacrifices made by children in military families. Observed each April, this month serves as a reminder of the strength, resilience and adaptability displayed by military-connected youth as they navigate the challenges of frequent relocations, parental deployments, and the demands of military life.
One way we show our appreciation is by participating in Purple Up! Day, where individuals across the Department of Defense and the nation wear purple as a visible sign of support for military children. The color purple symbolizes the combined colors of all military branches, reflecting the joint nature of our Armed Forces and the unity of our military families.
The Month of the Military Child recognizes the vital role these young individuals play in the readiness and well-being of service members, showing their support and sacrifices and emphasizing the importance of providing them with gratitude and ongoing support.

Lights are starting to change across the streets, flightline and facilities at Ramstein Air Base, and it’s not for appearances.
The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron is replacing all fluorescent lighting with more energyefficient LED lights in response to a German regulation released in 2023 that no longer allows the purchase of fluorescent bulbs due to their high-energy use.
“This is a massive task for our Airmen,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Levi Owen, 786th CES facility superintendent. “With only 115 electricians, we have approximately 350,000 interior and a little more than 8,000 exterior lights that need to be replaced.”
The change in lights is expected to have significant cost savings, making the cost only a third of what it used to be but the initial cost to replace all of the lights on base is above what can be afforded in the annual budget.
Currently, fluorescent lights are allowed to be used still until they burn out. In the meantime, 786th CES found a solution to keep light shining in critical areas like the flightline.
“The reason we still have parking apron lights is because Spangdahlem AB gave Ramstein their used bulbs when they replaced their lights,” Owen said.
786th CES Airmen even volunteered to work long hours through the night in January this year to not interfere with heavy traffic times on base during the day.
The Airmen successfully
replaced 500 lights in just 21 days.
“It was tedious,” said Senior Airman Matthew Altenbernd, 786th CES electrical systems journeyman. “The cold was relentless and sometimes it would rain but that’s the mission.”
Seeing the motivation and commitment from his team to accomplish the mission caught the attention of Owen, who holds a deep respect for his team.
“I love them to death,” Owen said. “It doesn’t matter what is asked of them, they never complain, they just go out and get it done.”
Light is essential for mission success. Despite challenges with limited personnel, equipment, and funding, the 786th CES continues to maintain and manage base-wide lighting to keep operations running.

BATTLE CREEK, MI — The U.S. Army Reserve’s 773rd Weapons of Mass Destruction – Civil Support Team, based out of Kaiserslautern, is unique among its peers. Of 57 federally-funded WMD-CSTs, it’s the only non-National Guard unit of its kind and the only one operating in a foreign country.
In early 2024, an Army Structure Memorandum directed the unit’s inactivation no later than September 2025. Once disestablishment efforts got underway, unit leadership reached out to Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services for help with turning over excess property and finding new homes for still-usable material.
“DLA was instrumental in supporting the unit’s inactivation efforts,” said Army Maj. Anthony Gonzalez, 773rd WMD-CST commander. “As good stewards of Army funding and equipment, it is always beneficial to find another DOD unit that can utilize the equipment.”
DLA Disposition Services’ Nicholas Lulay supported the unit’s excess property turnover effort. The former Navy petty officer deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan for DLA while still in uniform, has served in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Washington state since taking a federal civilian position with DLA in 2013, and began his new role in as a disposal services representative in Kaiserslautern about five months ago.
“I enjoy that every day is different, and I get to provide frontline assistance to the warfighter,” Lulay said. “Anything that we can do to make their mission easier is a win for me.”
Lulay said he familiarized himself with the 773rd while conducting a customer visit alongside Air Force Maj. Nathan Kaiser, the DLA Disposition Services Europe and Africa deputy director of military operations. They were especially impressed with the good condition of the unit’s Dismounted Reconnaissance Sets, Kits, and Outfits, or “DRSKO” system and decided to market it to regional units for reuse, rather than consider the estimated $14,000 it would cost to ship it back stateside.
The DRSKO is originally designed to support mobile dismounted reconnaissance and
hazardous material technicians.
Gonzales said it proved essential for the 773rd during combatant command exercises like Slovakiahosted Toxic Valley and African Lion, hosted by Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.
“We figured we would actively advertise and see if anyone in country could utilize it,” Lulay said. “We did not want to see it go to waste.”
Servicemembers constantly change billets, transfer to new installations, and are thrust into new roles. Promoting excess property as a potential supply source requires constant outreach, and DLA personnel regularly visit units to provide basic education on agency reverse logistics services like property turn-in, hazardous waste disposal, demilitarization, and property reuse.
In November, the Air Force 435th Air Ground Operations Wing at nearby Ramstein Air Base received a reintroduction to DLA property reuse potential and, soon after, began compiling a want list and actively screening for property online and in person locally.
“Through the growing partnership between the 435 AGOW and DLA Disposition Services personnel at Kaiserslautern, a communication of ‘wish list’ items benefitting or enhancing our organization led to the identification of the DRSKO kit and the impact it would have on our ability to meet the mission,” said Capt. Astin Moore, the director of logistics, engineering, and force protection for 435th.
Moore said acquisition of the DRSKO system allowed several Air Force organizations to directly fill required unit type code items that had gone vacant, while also fulfilling items currently listed on their Unfunded Requirements List at no cost.
“The ability of the Kaiserslautern disposition facility personnel to listen to and understand our needs 100 percent contributed to the acquisition of the DRSKO kit,” Moore said. “They have directly contributed to the acquisition of over $2.6 million worth of mission generating assets, greatly enhancing the Wing’s ability to meet requirements in a timely manner and significantly increase our commander’s consideration of used/excess property. Their customer
service, professionalism, and willingness to support has been nothing short of amazing.”
In fiscal 2024, military units reutilized more than 61,000 line items originally valued at $1.4 billion from DLA’s used and excess property stocks. Of the excess property that military units declined to reutilize, equipment originally valued at $90 million was subse-
quently transferred to other federal departments, 15,000 items originally worth $182 million were donated to State Agencies for Surplus Property and their qualified recipients, and commercial sales of scrap and usable property auctioned to the public returned $83 million to DOD and reducing the service-level cost of the department’s property disposition mission.

Soldiers from 30th Medical Brigade’s 519th Hospital Center completed an essential Soldier Readiness Program from March 24-26 at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, in preparation for a three-week operation in the Baltics supporting Defender-Europe 2025.
The Soldier Readiness Program is a comprehensive process and is how the Army ensures Soldiers are medically, administratively and logistically prepared for deployment, training and other military duties.
The majority of participating Soldiers at the SRP came from 519th Hospital Center commanded by Col. Avery Carney.
Carney oversees the planning, deployment, and command and control of the hospital center as part of U.S. Army Europe and Africa's Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO deterrence and enhanced readiness exercises, aka, DEFENDER.
“Personnel from the 519th's S1 (personnel administration), S2 (intelligence), chaplain, and clinical operations sections spearheaded the SRP,” said Col. Paula Young, deputy commander of clinical services, 519th Hospital Center. “They were augmented by specialists from 30th Medical Brigade, including S1, S2, behavioral health, legal, and
additional clinical operations personnel, ensuring all aspects of Soldier readiness were addressed.”
Young said that the SRP includes medical screenings, legal briefings, and equipment checks, among other stations, all aimed to ensure deploying Soldiers are fully prepared for the mission ahead.
Assigned to 30th Medical Brigade and in support of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the 519th Hospital
Center is a mission command headquarters that provides tailored forces to deliver U.S. Role 2/3 Combat Health Support for Unified Land Operations for U.S. European Command, and U.S. Africa Command areas of operation. The 519th Hospital Center commands the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 519th Hospital Center, the 512th Field Hospital, the 160th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment and the 67th
Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment.
The 519th Hospital Center is responsible for providing expeditionary hospitalization with resuscitative and surgical capabilities, while meeting increased health readiness requirements in a dynamic and complex operational landscape.
The 519th Hospital Center is a U.S. Army military field hospital. A hospital center is transportable by aircraft and truck and is normally
delivered to the operational environment in cargo containers. Once transported, the hospital center is assembled by the staff into a “tent” hospital to treat patients. Depending upon the operational environment (e.g., battlefield), a hospital center might also treat civilians and wounded enemy Soldiers.
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s support, providing facilities and space for warfighters to train and prepare, is a critical component in enabling readiness processing and facilitating power projection throughout the European and African theaters.
“The Rheinland-Pfalz garrison team is razor-focused on providing world-class services in support of our tenant units, the warfighters and their families, ensuring our nation’s and our Allies’ security,” said Col. Jeffery Higgins, garrison commander.
DEFENDER is the Army’s largest annual opportunity to exercise moving personnel and equipment into theater across modes for initial and follow-on operations critical to Large Scale Combat Operations. Led by U.S. Army Europe and Africa, the exercise focuses on the strategic deployment of CONUS-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stock and follow-on exercises demonstrating lethality and interoperability with Allies and partners.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz held a town hall and information forum at the Rheinlander Community Club on Smith Barracks, Baumholder, March 20. The quarterly event provides a platform for residents to engage directly with garrison leadership.
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Deputy Garison Manager Mark Colbrook, who manages daily operations in Baumholder on behalf of the garrison commander, emphasized the importance of community feedback and engagement.
“We want to hear from you,” Colbrook said. “Tell us what’s working, what’s not. By working together and listening to your feedback, we can identify challenges and find effective solutions.”
Attendees in-person and those who watched via Facebook livestream received updates on current projects and initiatives shaping the future of Baumholder, as well as information about upcoming programs and services designed to enhance quality of life.
“Don’t hesitate to ask the garrison command team anything that’s on your mind,” Colbrook said. “We’re dedicated to supporting you and, while we can’t promise instant fixes to every problem, we can promise to work hard to find solutions for you.”
Col. Jeffery Higgins, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, stressed the importance of open communication with the Baumholder military community.
“Our focus is ensuring access to essential services that keep you mission-ready and provides support for your families,” said Higgins. “We are committed to transparency and prioritizing open communication with community members as we work together to adapt and thrive.”
Of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s 28 geographically separated sites throughout Germany, Baumholder is the only
location that offers the entire package of garrison services, including an Army Air Force Exchange Service store, a commissary, an indoor swimming pool, a United Services Organization center, two dining facilities, on-post housing and barracks, medical and dental facilities, a gas station, a thrift store, child care facilities and Department of Defense Education Activity schools. The U.S. Army has made a $1 Billion investment in construction projects and quality of life improvements in Baumholder, including upgraded and new family housing, schools and a visitors’ lodge.
The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Religious Support Office team was recognized on Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, March 26, for support they provided following the unexpected passing of a host nation teammate and long-standing employee of the garrison.
Three Soldiers from the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz RSO team — Maj. Craig Poole, community chaplain, Staff Sgt. Samcess Fofanah, RSO noncommissioned officer in charge, and Specialist Yuri Li, RSO funds technician — offered spiritual and emotional support to Logistics Readiness Center Rheinland-Pfalz employees and family members of Michael Weis, who passed away Feb. 19. They provided grief support and counseling and opened the chapel for a remembrance ceremony providing a forum for LRC RP leaders to present a posthumous award to the family.
Col. Ernest Lane, commander of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, presented the RSO team with coins in recognition and appreciation for their demonstration of strength, resilience and compassion during a difficult time.
“On behalf of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the RSO team,” Lane said. “Your efforts provided much-needed comfort and support to the LRC team and the Weis family. Your actions truly made a difference.”
James Charette, LRC RP director, said the loss of their colleague is deeply felt.
“Today’s coin presentation ceremony is about the power of community,” Charette said. “We all came together to provide vital support during a difficult time, and that's what truly matters.”

Three months after immigrating to Brooklyn, N.Y., from his native Caribbean country of Jamaica in 1999, Teflon Wint signed his name on the dotted line and enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve the United States of America. On April 4, the 405th Army Field Support Brigade senior supply system technician and installation supply representative will be promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 5, the highest rank in the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Corps.
“It means a lot to me. It’s my way of representing all immigrants, showing that we do contribute, and we do sacrifice a lot for our country, the United States of America,” said the 46-year-old Army supply and logistics expert who served four tours in Iraq following 9/11. “For me, this promotion to CW5 is humbling. I’m helping to carry the legacy and break stereotypes.”
Wint will be promoted to CW5 during a special ceremony at the Daenner Kaserne Chapel in Kaiserslautern, starting at 4 p.m. April 4. His youngest son, Teflon Wint II, will graduate from U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps almost exactly a month later and commission as an Army cyber officer. Wint said he couldn’t be prouder.
“He’s the youngest of my four children,” said Wint, who has been married for almost 26 years and also has a 27-, 28- and 31-year-old. “Family is everything. Five combat deployments, three operational tours to Africa within 28-months and numerous other times away from them took a toll on my family. They sacrificed so much. They sacrificed just as much as I did, and I love them very much.”
Wint said this year is special for so many reasons. Of course, he’s being promoted to CW5, but also the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Corps celebrates its 107th birthday, and even more significant the Army celebrates its 250th.
“I couldn’t think of a better time to get promoted. I get to do it on the same year as the Army’s 250th birthday, and I get to enjoy all this with family and friends so it’s really special for me. Happy 250th birthday, U.S. Army!” said Wint.
Wint, who enlisted in the Army as an automated logistical specialist, went to the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Candidate School in 2008 in Alabama as a staff sergeant. Seventeen years later the senior warrant officer in the 405th AFSB is responsible for advising the brigade commander on all things supply and logistics but specifically warehouse management optimization and supply from a maintenance perspective.
As the brigade’s senior supply system technician, Wint overseas the supply support for the Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 program, but he is also the U.S. Army Europe and Africa installation supply representative in support of the entire theater. This includes over 40 supply support activity locations, several of which are at APS-2 worksites and a few more that standup to specifically support rotational forces when they deploy to eastern Europe.
“We’re moving parts from one location to the next to fill customer requirements to improve equipment downtime. We’re looking at long lead time parts that are affecting equipment downtime, and we are looking at existing Army stocks, meaning stocks owned by U.S. Army Materiel Command and stored at the supply support activity locations, to do what we call lateral support,” Wint said.
The U.S. Army Warrant Officer Corps is comprised of over 25,000 men and women of the active Army and Reserve components. Warrant officers are technical experts who manage and maintain increasingly complex battlefield systems. Warrant officers serve at all levels of the Army. Typically,
junior warrant officers are assigned at the tactical level, whereas senior warrant officers are assigned at higher levels such as brigade and above, and also to positions on the Army staff at the Pentagon. In addition, warrant officers serve with the Department of Defense, joint organizations and other military services.
The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and headquartered in Kaiserslautern. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa — providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging AMC’s materiel enterprise to support joint
forces. For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www.afsbeurope.army.mil and the official Facebook site at www.facebook.com/405thAFSB.
The Army will celebrate its 250th birthday on June 14. For 250 years, the Army has offered endless possibilities and opportunities for service to our nation with over 200 career choices for Soldiers and more than 500 career paths for civilians. To learn more about the Army’s 250th birthday, visit www.army.mil/1775 and check out the DVIDS’s special Army birthday feature portal at www.dvidshub.net/ feature/ARMY250.

The 405th Army Field Support Brigade is spearheading the Department of Defense Skillbridge program in Europe, and thus far the program is proving its worth, both for transitioning Soldiers and for the brigade’s Logistics Civil Augmentation Program.
According to the DOD Skillbridge official website, Skillbridge is an opportunity for service members to gain valuable real-world civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships or internships during the last 180 days of their service. At the 405th AFSB, Master Sgt. Karina Rodriguez is currently enrolled in the program with LOGCAP.
“I learned about Skillbridge during the Transition Assistance Program course I was taking at Kleber Kaserne,” said the 23-year career Soldier and transportation senior sergeant at the 39th Transportation Movement Control Battalion who retires from activeduty service at the end of July.
“Like any other job, you go through an interview process to see if you’re the right fit. The process from the time of the interview to getting my packet supported by my battalion and brigade commanders took about 60 days,” Rodriguez said.
“To become a LOGCAP professional, there is a lot of training,” said Rodriguez. “Right now, I’m currently taking numerous acquisition certification classes, performing LOGCAP duties and participating in LOGCAP training within U.S. Army Sustainment Command, ASC’s Acquisition Integration and Management Center and Policy, Programs and Training Directorate.”
Rodriquez is only the second transitioning Soldier to go through the 405th AFSB’s LOGCAP Skillbridge program. The first, Kenneth Trejosamador, was hired by the brigade after completing the program and currently works for LOGCAP Africa in Stuttgart.
“Skillbridge is great for the 405th AFSB LOGCAP program because experienced Soldiers transitioning from active duty can provide supporting resources and skills, helping LOGCAP with external contract service support for U.S. European Command,” said Chris Norris, the deputy director of LOGCAP Europe.
“It’s all about talent management, building the bench and augmenting the LOGCAP staff,” said Norris, who currently manages base life service and support at about 40 sites across Europe. “Skillbridge allows Soldiers to learn additional skills they might not get as green suiters, helps build their resumes, and helps set them up for the next chapter of their careers.”
According to the DOD Skillbridge website, the program is normally six months in length and an invaluable chance to work and learn in civilian career fields.
For industry partners and organizations like LOGCAP, SkillBridge is an opportunity to access and leverage the world’s most highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost. Soldiers participating in SkillBridge continue receiving their military compensation and benefits while organizations like LOGCAP provide civilian training and work experience.
To learn more about the DOD Skillbridge program, visit https://skillbridge.osd.mil, and to download the official DOD Skillbridge brochure, go to https://skillbridge.osd.mil/docs/ SkillBridge-Program-Brochure. pdf. For more information on the Army’s Transition Assistance Program, or TAP, go to https:// www.armytap.army.mil.
LOGCAP is an Army strategic sourcing preferred source for base operations support and sustainment services. LOGCAP remains the contracted capability of choice for the Army and multiple joint partners for emergent and contingency operations. Currently, the 405th AFSB’s LOGCAP program supports thousands of deployed U.S. forces in Europe and Africa with base life support and more.
The 405th AFSB is assigned to ASC and headquartered in Kaiserslautern. The brigade provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging the U.S. Army Materiel Command materiel enterprise to support joint forces. For more information on the 405th AFSB, visit the official website at www.afsbeurope.army.mil and the official Facebook site at www.facebook.com/405thAFSB.

The Rheinlander Community Club on Smith Barracks transformed into a ballroom as U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz
Child and Youth Services hosted its first Bows and Bowties Ball, Baumholder, Feb. 22.
The event, which saw parents and children ages 6 weeks to 5th grade dressed in their finest attire, brought together families of Soldiers and Army Civilians from across USAG Rheinland-Pfalz for
an evening of Hollywood-themed fun.
Twirling on the dance floor and sharing sweet treats, children and their parents and guardians created a night to remember filled with music and laughter.
“Sharing our first dance together was a moment I’ll cherish forever,” said Ashley Capers, Baumholder Child Development Center administrative support assistant. “Watching my son light up on the dance floor filled my heart with joy and gratitude. It was a beautiful reminder of the
bond we share and the memories we’re creating together.”
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Outreach Services Director Jennifer Jones said she enjoyed organizing this event with the CYS team.
“Seeing the smiles on the faces of the children and parents was truly rewarding,” she said. “We’re eager to continue creating opportunities like this for families to connect with each other, build relationships, and make lasting memories.”
The Bows and Bowties Ball was
met with appreciation from many parents.
“We are so grateful we got to attend this family dance as a family,” said Brian Choi, who attended with his wife Mariko and their daughter. “Our little girl was so excited that she was picking out her outfit weeks in advance and even coordinated mine — I can’t remember how many shirts and ties I had to try on to get her approval!”
The Baumholder CYS program is run by USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Family and Morale,
Welfare, and Recreation and provides programs and services for children of eligible military and civilian families. By hosting these types of events, DFMWR aims to support the overall readiness of Soldiers by providing programs and services that strengthen families, reduce stress, and build a supportive community. Events like the Bows and Bowties Ball directly contribute to this goal by encouraging strong family bonds and boosting morale, while enabling resilience for a globally-responsive Army.

Bunnies, brightly colored eggs, Easter trees, tulips and daffodils, and religious services are all part of Easter traditions in Germany and other European countries. They remind us that spring with all its freshness and color is full in bloom.
Next week, Friday to Monday marks a long Easter weekend in Germany. Both Good Friday (April 18) and Easter Monday (April 21) are public holidays in Germany and all stores, banks and official offices are closed. Switzerland and the Netherlands are closed on Friday, while Luxembourg, France and Belgium treat Easter Monday as a public holiday.
You may have already spotted an Ostereierbaum (Easter tree) in your village square or neighbor’s front yard where bushes and trees are decorated with colorful eggs. Easter markets have also become rather popular offering decorations, special treats of the season and even carousels and activities for children with a springtime twist.
You might soon even experience an Osterfeuer, a large bonfire, usually lit on the night before Easter in parts of Germany and the Netherlands. This old tradition is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. In some areas the fires were also used as a type of spring cleaning, where no longer needed furniture, household items or clothes were burned to tidy up the house.
A popular sport during the season is “Ostereierschiessen” (Easter egg shooting). Contestants shoot at paper goals marked with Easter figures or eggs with
the aim of hitting as many “eggs” as possible. Each successful shot brings about a real egg and the winner of a whole tournament is crowned as the “Schützenkönig” (archer king).
Another German tradition may not be quite so familiar. Beginning the weekend of celebration on Thursday, referred to as “Gründonnerstag” (green Thursday) foods are held in green. Tradition has it that some families only eat pure vegetarian meals, and popular dishes include spinach with potatoes and fried eggs, potatoes with green herb sauce, a specialty from Frankfurt, or egg salad with mustard and herb dressing.
In honor of St. Peter, who was a fisherman, fish is typically served, fried or steamed, on Friday. Salmon with potatoes and green asparagus is popular, while kids may prefer simple fish sticks. An Easter Sunday dish could be “falscher Hase” (false rabbit), a type of meatloaf, or the traditional Easter lamb, served with rosemary potatoes and fresh spring vegetables. Typical desserts include carrot cake, a braid shaped cake called “Osterzopf” or cakes and cupcakes with fresh fruits and cream. Chocolate Easter bunnies, eggs, chicks and other sweets remain the all-time favorites for younger (and older) children.
Many other European countries have special foods associated with Easter. In Italy, Colomba di Pasqua (Easter dove) is a sweet, dove-shaped bread, while in Greece, Tsoureki, a sweet, braided bread, is a popular treat. In the UK, hot cross buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday.
Processions and parades are also a
common means of observing the highest Christian holiday. In Spain and Italy, Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter) is marked by elaborate processions and parades. In Spain, Semana Santa processions involve participants dressed in traditional robes and hoods, carrying religious icons and statues through the streets.
Water splashing is popular in some eastern European countries. In Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, Easter Monday is celebrated with a unique tradition called “Sprinkling” or “Whipping Monday.” Boys splash water on girls and lightly tap them with willow branches, a ritual believed to bring health and beauty to the women.
Easter witches are common in Sweden and Finland, where children dress up as witches, resembling Halloween, and go door-to-door, offering drawings and paintings in exchange for sweets.
A somewhat older tradition in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is to pull moss from below trees and shrubs and bind it into natural Easter baskets for the bunny to fill with eggs and small gifts. Self-made willow baskets are also popular, and younger families might plant wheat seeds into a glass bowl or vase about three weeks prior to the holiday for children to watch the Easter nest grow.
Northern Germany has a very special tradition with the Easter bunny hopping around the beaches at the North and Baltic Seas and dropping eggs in the sand. Children will then dig for the precious “seafood” with buckets and shovels.
As in the United States and large parts of Europe, Easter egg hunts are a
popular activity in England. Decorated real eggs or chocolate ones are hidden in gardens and parks, while some larger events take place in historic estates and contestants can win prizes for finding the most eggs. Egg rolling is also a popular and fun tradition, played in some areas in England. Hard-boiled eggs are rolled down a hill or across a field and the goal is to see whose egg rolls the farthest without breaking.
In Greece, Easter eggs are typically dyed a deep red color to symbolize the blood of Christ. The eggs are then blessed during church services and used in the traditional game of “tsougrisma,” where participants tap their eggs against each other to see whose egg remains uncracked.
Rabbits have historically been seen as a symbol of fertility and offspring can be up to 20 bunnies. In addition, in Byzantium a rabbit was an early symbol for Christ. Both in Greek and Germanic mythology, rabbits were considered to be holy animals for Greek Goddess Aphrodite and for Germanic Spring and Fertility Goddess Ostera. According to legend, children were sent to meadows to search for eggs in Switzerland, and since they more often saw rabbits than hens, they believed that “Peter Cottontail” had left the eggs. In Germany, the rabbit first became popular in 1678 (Reformation time) by Protestant families and the bunny finally became a “star” thanks to the chocolate industry!
The spring season offers a lot of fun and exciting events, see Unterwegs on Page 19 for inspiration!
Story and photos by Anna Lessire 86 Civil Engineer Squadron, Environmental Office
The foundation of Earth Day was such a success that in December 1970 Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Americans began celebrating Earth Day on April 22 every year.
In 1990, Earth Day went global spanning 141 countries, and the event continues to spread internationally, providing a powerful focal point from which people can demonstrate their commitment to being good stewards of the environment.
Earth Day will turn 55 this year with 192 countries and more than one billion people around the globe expected to participate.
Earth Day goals: More than just spreading awareness!
Environmental protection is especially important with the consequences of climate change becoming more apparent. Scientists worldwide have proclaimed the need for immediate action. News outlets showcase larger and more frequent natural catastrophes such as floods, storms and tornadoes. Communities need to rethink consumer behavior to prevent an ecological crisis.
Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference, and everyone can make incremental adjustments without experiencing significant impacts to their daily lives.
“Sustainable consumerism” is a movement occurring across Europe and the U.S. which promotes purchasing
goods that are manufactured responsibly with minimal waste. A large supermarket provides goods that are grown thousands of miles away, sometimes in a location that requires extensive irrigation. Why not change the demand signal by going to a local farmer’s market? Farmer’s markets require minimal resources to produce goods that provide benefits to all consumers. Did you know that many nearby cities such as Kaiserslautern hold regular farmers markets?
Other simple lifestyle changes include changing your conventional light bulbs to energy-saving Light Emitting Diode bulbs. LEDs are 80 percent more efficient and can last up to 10 times longer. Replacing 10 fluorescent bulbs with LEDs saves $25 annually in electrical costs and prevents 14kg of carbon emissions. Other energy efficient and cost saving practices are turning off, or unplugging, scarcely used electronics, washing clothes at lower temperatures and walking or using public transport.
One last tip! Refrain from lowering your air conditioner in the summer as one degree Celsius in room temperature consumes approximately 10 percent more energy.
Earth Day 2025 theme: “Our Power, Our Planet”
Each year, Earth Day campaigners call for events with an altering annual theme. The U.S. 2025 Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.”
One billion Earth Day supporters from 192 countries are invited to unite behind renewable energy. The goal is to triple global generation of clean electricity by the year 2030. Everyone is urged to explore smart energy choices
for their families and to also advocate for an expedited deployment of renewable resources.
How does the Kaiserslautern Military Community officially celebrate Earth Day 2025?
The 86th Airlift Wing hosts tree planting events throughout the year with Team Ramstein mission partners, host nation representatives and German Forest Departments. Team Ramstein will host a week of environmental centric activities from April 14 to 18.
Ramstein Intermediate School students will participate in a guided tour through the base-owned water treatment plant where most of the potable water used across Ramstein is treated, stored, maintained and controlled. Attendees will learn about the technical equipment used to clean and protect water! There will also be an educational walk through of Ramstein’s first informative nature trail with Ramstein Elementary School second grade students.
Please let us know if you have any suggestions for Earth Day 2025 events! For additional environmental information please contact the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Installation Management Flight at DSN 314480-5086/7712 or email us at 86ces.cea@us.af.mil.
We are a group of professionals dealing with natural resources, landscape protection, recycling, hazardous waste, hazardous material management, air emissions, contaminated soil remediation and other related topics. We are happy to support you and answer any environmental questions you may have.
“Building a sustainable society is the critical challenge of this century. Everything depends on it.”

Health.mil sat down with Dr. Marc Alaric Franzos, a cardiologist at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland, to explain what’s the best diet to eat overall and what foods warfighters should focus on to stay fit for the fight.
Franzos is a retired U.S. Navy captain who flew P3 Orions early in his career. He became a U.S. Navy physician and a flight surgeon and ultimately specialized in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. He is an associate professor of medicine at the Department of Defense’s premiere medical school.
“Picking a diet you like and you can stick with, but that is also somewhat healthy — and will get you to your goals — is really critical,” Franzos said.
His top nutritional lifestyle suggestion is the long-popular and varied Mediterranean diet. The diet includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds; olive oil as a primary fat source; and low to moderate consumption of dairy and eggs, fish at least twice a week and poultry in moderate amounts. Red meat, recommended to eat no more than once per week, is considered any meat from a mammal such as beef, pork, and lamb, Franzos noted. The diet centers on minimally processed, plant-based foods to prevent heart disease and stroke and reduce heart risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
On the Mediterranean diet, you need to be “ensuring that you’re getting a fair amount of complex carbohydrates and limiting the simple carbohydrates, particularly those refined carbohydrates like white bread and white potatoes,” said Franzos.
Simple changes make a difference, like eating sweet potatoes or brown rice instead of white rice, or whole wheat bread instead of white bread, for example.
Complex carbohydrates are starches and fibers that provide sustained energy and take longer to digest compared to simple carbohydrates. They are rich in nutrients and sustain energy throughout the day. According to Franzos, complex carbs include:
Whole grains: Brown rice, quinoa, oats, barley, and whole wheat products
• Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots, and other starchy or fibrous vegetables
• Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, and peas
• Fruits: Apples, pears, bananas, and berries, especially with the skin
• Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds
Complex carbs are better for your health because they take “a little longer … to be digested, and, as a result, what you have is a lower insulin spike right after you eat them. There’s a slow dispersion of those calories through your gut and into your bloodstream, as opposed to white rice or refined wheat and white bread or white potatoes. Those can cause rapid insulin spike, resulting from the rapid flow of the breakdown products, particularly glucose, into the bloodstream. That’s one of the premises behind eating complex carbohydrates over simple carbohydrates,” Franzos explained.
The Mediterranean diet “is also built on the idea that you minimize the amount of fats, but your snacks, instead of being processed foods like chips, should be simple, complex carbohydrates, sometimes with protein,
like … nuts or even maybe a little bit of cheese,” he said.
“The benefit of those types of snacks is that they come with a little bit of protein and fat that will create a sense of satiety that will keep you feeling full longer, so you won’t binge and eat more soon after that snack,” explained Franzos.
Why the Mediterranean Diet is good for warfighters
The diet works for warfighters because it’s easily portable and can be served in nutritionally dense but calorically moderate portions. “We need to approach … comfort foods with moderation and really look at those foods that can fuel us for the fight and maximize the intake of those” foods, Franzos said.
“When it comes to being fit for the fight, it’s not necessarily crucial that you have a six-pack, but it is crucial that you’re able to respond in a moment’s notice to a crisis. Regardless of your [military occupational specialty], undoubtedly, there’s going to be crises that you’ll need to respond to, and if you’re fueled properly, you’ll be able to respond much more appropriately,” Franzos explained.
For the warfighter, that means “having foods that will sustain ener-
gy levels for a prolonged period of time and also having food that will replace and build muscle for your specific [military occupational specialty], in particular,” he said. For example, infantry or similar combat arms specialists, “where you’re busting down doors, it’s absolutely critical to build up that muscle mass and retain it so that you can use it when the time comes.”
Energy drinks: Caution and balance Energy drinks are “ubiquitous” in military service, Franzos said, noting they are full of caffeine and high levels of sugar, so he advised caution.
“Look at the total content and be cognizant of the fact that about 200–400 milligrams of caffeine should be a daily serving, or about 3–6 mg/kg, so minimize the amount of caffeine that you’re taking on board.” Many energy drinks contain anywhere from 160 mg to 300 mg of caffeine in one serving.
“You also should balance those energy drinks with actual water consumption, because some of the energy drinks may contain diuretics (including caffeine) and may end up causing you to lose a lot of the fluid. And when you end up losing fluid, you are putting your whole system at risk, not just the cardiovascular system, but also, in particular, the kidney sys-
tem,” said Franzos. “The kidneys may respond unfavorably to dehydration, if you’re in a particularly hot environment” such as the Middle East or South Pacific, by starting to shut down. “That situation can be fatal.”
Finally, Franzos said “we all need to pay attention to this type of diet, and to a regular exercise regimen of strength and cardio combined that we will like and subsequently follow regularly.”

Ready to set a world record?
On your mark, get set, run…
Imagine the whole city of Kaiserslautern running together to set a world record! This is exactly the idea behind a major campaign that will take place in May.
What is the goal?
To run as many kilometers as possible in 90 days. And not just by sports professionals, but by everyone! Whether young or old, fast or slow, living locally or abroad — anyone who feels connected to K-Town can take part and join in. The aim is to beat the Allianz Group’s previous record. We have to run more than 1.38 million kilometers and achieve an average of at least 1.5 km per participant per day.
Why is this so special?
This record attempt is intended to show how important it is that all people, regardless of whether they have a disability or not, can do sport. The handicapped athlete Abdul Dogan is a wheelchair user; he will accompany the campaign and show us how much fun sport can be. Wheelchair users can take part in the record attempt as long
as they cover the kilometers with their own muscle power.
How can I take part?
It starts on May 22, with a big run at the B2Run Kaiserslautern. After that, everyone has 90 days to collect kilometers. At the end, it will be determined whether Kaiserslautern has broken the world record.
Why should I take part?
• Be part of a great adventure! Let’s set a world record and make history.
• Show how important inclusion is! Help ensure that everyone can do sport.
• Have fun and get moving! Do something good for yourself and your health.
Where can I register?
Sign-up is required by April 30. You can find more information and the registration form at: https://next-step-kl.com/ weltrekord
Join us, together we can achieve something GREAT!
Who is doing it?
The world record is being organized as part of the “Kaiserslautern for the next step” campaign by the Science and Innovation Alliance Kaiserslautern e.V. in collaboration with the Rheinland-Pfalz – Land in Motion state initiative. Other partners include City Management Kaiserslautern, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, B2Run and the members of the SIAK network.
Miniatur Wunderland
Visit the largest model railway system in the world at Miniatur Wunderland. Discover over 930 trains with nearly 14,450 railway wagons, 228,000 trees, 215,000 figures, 8,850 cars, 13,000 meters of track, and 3,660 buildings and bridges.
This intricate and realistic miniature world is perfect for a day out with the kids. It is set over eight sections:
Central Germany and the Harz, with its seemingly endless ICE high-speed route and over 130 trains, it includes beautiful landscapes and replicas of famous Hamburg districts and attractions such as St. Michaelis Church and Hagenbeck Zoo and the Port of Hamburg.
Knuffingen is such a famous ‘mini’ city that it even has its own website (in German)! It is home to 10,000 ‘model’ inhabitants and its local police force frequently catches speeding drivers using their radar trap. The local fire station is kept pretty busy too.
America draws ‘tiny’ crowds with its desert metropolis and paradise for gamblers, Las Vegas: More than 10 percent of all Wunderland lights — around 33,000 — are installed here. You can also enjoy mini versions of the Keys and Cape Canaveral as well as of course the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and Yosemite Park.
Scandinavia was set up as the sixth section in 2005. Particularly impressive is the real water basin in which there are currently 16 ships that travel from miniature port to port.
Switzerland, where the mountains stand with the 6-meter high Matterhorn as the centerpiece where visitors can hike and enjoy the view once they have reached the summit. There are many astounding highlights, such as the tiny chocolate factory which produces real chocolate, or the open-air concert with 21,000 tiny visitors.
Knuffingen Airport, which took 6 years of construction, offers visitors over 100 airplanes and other vehicles with fully automated movements.
Musicals & Theater
Hamburg is renowned for hosting some of the top musical shows in the country. Currently running are Disney’s The Lion King, Disney’s Tarzan, Disney’s Hercules, and the German premiere of the Michael Jackson Musical. Also running is ‘& Julia,’ a pop musical twist on the Romeo and Juliet story.
Hamburg has over 40 different theaters — the best known being the Thalia Theater, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Ohnsorg Theater, Schmidts Tivoli on the Reeperbahn, and Kampnagel.
The city also has an Englishlanguage dedicated theater. It was founded in 1976 by two Americans and shows a diverse range of plays every season. The programme usually includes a classic American or British drama, a comedy, a thriller, and a contemporary play. Past plays have included the works of Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw, Eugene O’Neill, Harold Pinter, Noel Coward, Tennessee Williams, Alan Ayckbourn, Neil Simon, Neil LaBute, and John Godber.
Hagenbeck Zoo
If you want to feed a giraffe, marvel at a baby elephant or watch cute, rare baby animals, at Hagenbeck Zoo you can! The park is home to over 1,850 animals from 210 species in spacious outdoor enclosures that reflect their natural living conditions. The latest attraction is the new Eismeer (Polar Sea). Polar bears, walruses, seals, Arctic seabirds and different penguin species feel at home in the 8,000 square meter complex with 5.3 million litres of water.
A quick trip to the elephant enclosure is a must for every visitor. Few other species are so popular with visitors as the Asian elephants. The gentle pachyderms delight both young and old. Feeding the grey giants with fruits and vegetables is encouraged and unique in Germany.
Younger guests can see dwarf and Ovambo goats up close in the petting zoo and will find lots to play with in the large playground with its Western fort. In addition, there is a suspension bridge, kangaroo jump pit, tiger and elephant path and numerous feeding shows that make the trip through the 25-hectare park into a real experience. Pampas rabbits and dwarf deer as well as magnificent peacocks and various breeds of domestic chicken roam freely around the park.
It’s possible to get tickets to visit both the Zoo and the Tropical Aquarium at a discounted price.
Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium
Experience an exciting journey into the world of the rainforest in Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium in Hamburg. In over 8,000 square meters, visitors will encounter 14,300 fascinating animals from 300 species, including small monkeys, large crocodiles, poisonous snakes and tropical sea inhabitants. The true-to-nature design of the habitats is particularly impressive: thanks to real jungle plants, narrow paths and, in some areas, brightly coloured birds flying freely, you actually feel like a jungle adventurer.
The Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium is divided into habitats: visitors travel through Africa, Asia and South America and discover animals from every continent. At the beginning of the tour is the Madagascar village square. Colorful parrots fly through the air and lemurs move swiftly among the trees and huts. You can even find crocodiles here; feeding times are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at around noon. In Africa, you will encounter tropical reptiles and in Asia various tortoises and iguanas. Four-eyed fish and basilisks greet the visitors on their jungle tour in South
America. Even life hidden underground can be explored.
• Cave Worlds are the retreat for the giant constrictors. Frogs, bats and other exotic creatures that shun the daylight also live behind the doors of an old cabinet. The path leads through the old mine tunnels to animals that are not seen during the day, such as whip spiders, newts and cave fish in the stalagmite cave.
• The Poisonous Snake Village is inhabited by numerous poisonous snakes. Including the longest venomous snake in the world — the king cobra. The green mamba and the Gabon viper from Africa, the Texas rattlesnake and the Australian spiny-tailed skink also call this home. Less dangerous animals such as the bearded dragon, scorpions, cockroaches and tarantulas also crawl over the sandy ground and rocky landscape.
• The Underwater World is a peaceful haven of green moraine, colourful corals and a huge Amazonian freshwater exhibit. The highlight of the tour is the unique panoramic window behind the spectacular shark atoll — a huge water basin holding about 1.8 million litres extends behind the 22-centimeter-thick curved pane of glass. Several species of sharks and many other reef inhabitants have their habitat there. Feeding of the large predators takes place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 2.00pm The Makalali Lodge offers a panoramic view of the tropical hall and an overview of the crocodile lake with four mighty Nile crocodiles.
By car, the journey time to Hamburg is around 5.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 4.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 6 hours from Stuttgart. For train options, check with Deutsche Bahn.
