From dispatch and licensing to ground transportation operations, the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron supports a steady flow of movement across Ramstein Air Base. The job is less about routines and more about reacting without losing sight of the bigger picture.
One of the biggest misconceptions of the career field is that it’s simple.
“That all we do is drive buses,” said Senior Airman Leonardo De Leon Ortiz, 86th VRS ground transportation support.
It’s an easy thought; most people only see the surface level and that a bus pulls up and it’s just a quick ride from point A to point B. What they don’t see behind the curtains is everything that had to line up before that moment even happened. The level of coordination, the calls, last minute changes and the problem that needed solving five minutes prior.
The 86th VRS handles everything from transporting aircrew after 16-hour flights to delivering

Pearl Harbor survivor and Navy veteran Freeman Johnson arrived in celebrity-like fashion at the Barnstable Adult Community Center in Hyannis, Massachusetts, March 18.
Johnson, one of the oldest survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was there to celebrate his 106th birthday.
He emerged from a black limousine amidst television news crews and photographers, aided by Barnstable police officer Brian Morrison, who assisted him into a wheelchair. The duo passed through a mixture of military service members and first responders who lined the sidewalk to salute Johnson as he approached the building’s entrance.
Sailors, firefighters, police officers and Coast Guard ROTC students from Barnstable High School were among those gathered to celebrate Johnson’s birthday and honor his military service.
Johnson was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and moved to Waltham when he was 5 years old. From there, he joined the Navy in 1939 at the age of 19.
After completing boot camp in Newport, Rhode Island, he was stationed on board his first ship, the Brooklyn-class light cruiser USS St. Louis, which was homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, at the time, but would later go to the Navy yard in Pearl Harbor for a maintenance period.
Johnson completed his sixyear Navy career as a machinist mate first class, but he was a junior sailor with the rank of fireman the morning of Dec. 7, 1941.
In a 2025 interview with Pacific Historic Parks – USS Arizona Memorial, Johnson reflected on his experiences during the attack, recalling the events of that fateful Sunday morning.
“I was in my bunk when the

whole thing started [at around] 7:56 in [the] morning,” Johnson said. “We’d already had breakfast, that was over. I heard the machine guns fire over my head, then [general quarters] started. Everybody on board has a specific spot they’re supposed to be in. So, I went to my spot.”
The Pearl Harbor attack accounted for 2,403 American deaths and 1,178 more wounded.
The USS St. Louis was remarkably the only major ship to exit the harbor unscathed. Johnson’s ship managed to escape without suffering any casualties or major damage during the attack, earning it the nickname “Lucky Lou.”
Johnson’s story exemplifies bravery in the face of danger and inspired the sailors in attendance.
Navy Fire Controlman 2nd Class Cullen McCarthy, a recruiter assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group New England, had the pleasure of serving Johnson a slice of cake after everyone sang “Happy Birthday.”
McCarthy grew up in Whitman, Massachusetts, just 30 miles from where Johnson did. He felt privileged to take part in honoring his shipmate and fellow New Englander.
“Well, it’s always awesome to get out into the community and get more involved, but especially when it’s something of this mag-

nitude,” McCarthy said. “It’s the 106th birthday for Freeman, a true hero, local hero and national hero. It’s important for me to be able to get out here and get involved.”
Johnson’s birthday celebration gave everyone the chance to learn some naval history, and it provided a heartfelt connection with a veteran who served our country at a crucial hour.
Kelly Howley, director of the Barnstable Council on Aging, oversees Barnstable Adult Community Center, which hosted the event.
“Well, today was a wonderful day celebrating Freeman’s 106th,” Howley said.
“He’s a local celebrity here in Barnstable now, and it was an honor to be part of all of the military, first responders, town government and the well-wishers that came by to help celebrate his birthday.”
Organizing the birthday party was a joint effort, with State Rep. Kip Diggs and Veterans Outreach Services collaborating to plan the event.

mission-critical cargo and responding to vehicle breakdowns on the flightline. It’s constant movement tied to timelines that doesn’t slow down because something went wrong.
“We’re the first face they see after a long flight,” De Leon Ortiz said. “That moment when they can finally rest. That’s us.”
Senior Airman Danielle Perea, also assigned to the 86th VRS and is the non-commissioned officer in charge of USAREUR licensing, said the squadron’s reach extends far beyond what most people see.
“We work with multiple units across the installation,” she said. “If something needs to move, we’re usually involved.”
That involvement stacks fast. One request can turn into three and simple tasks can turn into chain reactions. If something breaks on the flightline, now it’s a priority. If a crew lands early, now the timelines have to shift. If someone needs equipment moved, now dispatch is juggling everything at once.
“With dispatch, it depends on the shift,” Perea said. “It can be slow, or it can get really busy and now you’re responsible for making sure people get where they need to go without missing timelines.”
There’s a certain intensity that comes with tracking who’s out, who’s qualified, what’s available and what’s already late. Decisions are made knowing something is about to change again.
That balance gets harder when the tempo picks up, the operators are getting pulled from one mission to cover another, equipment isn’t where you want and fully qualified drivers can become limited.
“You might have a plan and then something comes up,” she said. “Now everything changes.”
Even with that, both Airmen made it clear the standard doesn’t drop just because things get busy.
“It’s not about cutting corners,” Perea said. “It’s about adjusting and making sure the mission still gets done the right way.”
At Ramstein, the 86th VRS doesn’t sit where people may expect it to. It’s distinctive in its own squadron, not tucked inside a Logistic Readiness Squadron like most bases.
“A lot of things just don’t move without us,” De Leon Ortiz said.
Behind all of it though, it really comes down to the people that you work closely alongside with.
“Seeing Airmen step up and do the job without being asked,” Perea said. “That sticks with you.”
That’s when things are working the right way and teamwork is flowing.
Without the 86th VRS, the gaps would start to show up quickly. Movements would slow and units would have to figure it out on their own or rely on contracts that can’t match the speed and flexibility of the well-oiled machine that is their team.

“You’d have to contract a lot of this out,” Perea said. “It would cost more and take longer.” It looks simple from the outside but

The 435th Construction and Training Squadron concluded its first of six Silver Flag trainings of the year.
This iteration was the first time the force support career field rejoined their civil engineer and logistics readiness counterparts in three years.
“I’m excited for this reintegration, because CE is our best friend in a deployed environment,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Naomi Holley, 435 CTS Force Support Contingency instructor. “It forces Force Support students to learn who exactly they need to contact for support, and in return, our services students support the CE specialties, especially when it comes to morale.”
Ramstein is one of three Silver Flag
locations that prepares Airmen from 16 career fields in more than 350 wartime tasks. The training began with classroom instruction and hands-on applications before moving to a forward-deployed bare base.
“The students set everything up from their tents to showers,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Tyler Stout, 435 CTS Contingency Training flight commander. “We then culminated with our exercise that tested core competencies.”
To ensure the training reflected modern warfighting, this Silver Flag iteration was the first to incorporate a simulated drone attack, a change designed to prepare Airmen for a variety real-world possibilities. The training covered a wide range of critical skills, including airfield damage repair, response to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats, lodging operations, and mortuary affairs.
“My hope is that my students retain the

information and not only apply it on a realworld deployment but also bring back the knowledge to their respective units,” said

Airmen, alongside Norwegian and allied partners, successfully concluded participation in exercise Cold Response 26, a Norwegianled multinational training event designed to enhance collective defense, sharpen warfighting skills and reinforce deterrence capabilities in the high north.
The exercise brought together more than 25,000 military and civilian personnel from over a dozen NATO nations across all domains operating from locations throughout Norway, Sweden and Finland. U.S. Air Force forces integrated with allies to execute high-intensity scenarios that tested interoperability and readiness in harsh Arctic conditions.
“During Cold Response, we are able to help strengthen the alliance by practicing and integrating with the other partners, from the mission planning to the actual execution at the squadron level,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Dustin Merritt, 493rd Fighter Squadron commander.
F-35A Lightning IIs from the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, operating out of Ørland Air Force Station, Norway, flew alongside Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35s assigned to the 123rd Luftving, integrating advanced fifth generation fighter capabilities across allied forces. Together they conducted demanding training, including complex night operations, to strengthen collective combat capability.
The air combat picture was further enhanced by Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Hornets, from the 211th Fighter Squadron, and Swedish Air Force JAS 39 Gripens from Karelia Air Wing, expanding the scope of multinational integration and reinforcing allied interoperability in complex and challenging scenarios.
Enabling these sustained air operations, KC-135 Stratotankers assigned to the 100th Air Refueling Wing, based at RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom, provided aerial refueling support, extending the range and endurance of U.S. and allied aircraft.
“Air-to-air refueling is an inherently dangerous job because you’re flying two or more airplanes very, very close together in proximity, so it takes a lot of preplanning, mission planning and coordination prior to, and good communication with our NATO allies and partners,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jeff Chae,
KC-135 pilot, with the 100th ARW. “Overall, I think the exercise really helps us to practice what we play and strengthens the NATO alliance, making us a more cohesive and capable force.”
Complementing this capability, HC-130J Combat King II aircraft assigned to the 23rd Wing, stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, also conducted in-air refueling with Swedish Air Force JAS 39 Gripens, expanding the reach and flexibility of multinational combat air operations.
In addition to refueling, HC-130J crews also supported combat search and rescue missions alongside Airmen assigned to the 56th and 57th Rescue Squadrons, from Aviano Air Base, Italy. From Bardufoss Air Station, these units trained with Swedish Air Force Rangers to execute personnel recovery operations in austere Arctic conditions. Using HH-60W Jolly Green IIs from the 56th RQS, the integrated team conducted hoist, rappelling and simulated recovery missions, strengthening their ability to locate, treat and extract isolated personnel.
Sustaining U.S. Air Force operations, maintainers across all participating units ensured aircraft survivability and mission readiness despite extreme Arctic conditions. Working in freezing temperatures, high winds, rain and snow, they kept aircraft mission-capable across the Arctic, enabling aircrews and rescue crews the ability to execute complex missions.
Together, these efforts demonstrated NATO’s ability to rapidly deploy, integrate and sustain combat-ready forces in the high north, reinforcing a unified and capable defensive alliance. By strengthening stability in a vital region of the European theater, Cold Response enhances the ability to defend the homeland by deterring potential threats before they reach U.S. borders.
“By exercising in Cold Response, the ability to execute missions rapidly and flexibly is one of the by products of this,” Merritt said. “It sends a message that we’re ready as part of NATO to deter and defend whatever we need to when the time arises.”
A U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing conducts low level operations during exercise Cold Response 26 over Kopparen Mountain, Norway, March 17. The unique Norwegian climate provided an opportunity for NATO allies and partners to enhance cold-weather capabilities and demonstrate the ability to operate at all times and in all conditions.

HEXENNACHT (WITCHES NIGHT) AND MAY DAY
APRIL 30 AND MAY 1, GERMANY-WIDE
Beware of little “witches” performing mischief and pranks on the evening of April 30. Youngsters may roam villages and “decorate” your car or lamp post with toilet paper or “steal” your trash can or small items in your yard. Be sure to store any easily accessible objects in your garage or backyard. May 1 is a German holiday, based on a workers’ movement and all stores and official offices will be closed for business. In local tradition May poles are set up and decorated in villages, with young people guarding the poles overnight.

An old proverb - April showers bring May flowers — ties the month to spring, renewal, and a number of movable religious and civic observances. Its name derives from the Latin aperire, meaning “to open,” a fitting image for budding growth.
In Germany, as in the United States and elsewhere, April often begins on a playful note: April Fools’ Day, with its pranks and jokes, lifts spirits on the first of the month and can provoke a smile, or the occasional exasperated frown.
One of the most famous hoaxes occurred on April 1, 1996, when Taco Bell ran full-page ads claiming it had bought the Liberty Bell to help reduce the national debt and would rename it the “Taco Liberty Bell.”
By contrast, April 1, 1918, marked a serious milestone: the founding of the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom, the world’s oldest independent air force, which was established near the end of World War I and maintains a contingent at Ramstein Air Base.
Rain or shine, April often ushers in seasonal change, but it has also been the backdrop for turmoil and tragedy.
events
On April 2, 1982, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, called the Malvinas by Argentina, sparking the Falklands War with the United Kingdom. The conflict lasted 74 days and resulted in more than 900 deaths, including Argentine and British service members and three island civilians.
April 4, 1968, brought the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee; his death prompted nationwide mourning and unrest and marked a pivotal moment in the U.S. civil-rights movement. The first official federal observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day took place on Monday, January 20, 1986, after the holiday was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic went down in one of the most infamous maritime disasters of modern times. Among the passengers was Isidor Straus, who had emigrated from Otterberg near Kaiserslautern, became co-owner of Macy’s in New York, and served in Congress. Returning from a visit home, he and his wife Ida boarded the supposedly “unsinkable” ship; they are said to have given their places in a lifeboat to others and chosen to remain together until the end.
Positive spring vibes
April also brings a brighter focus on the natural world: the first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970, when millions joined rallies and teachings that helped launch the modern environmental movement and paved the way for landmark laws
and institutions. Observances now range from neighborhood cleanups, tree plantings, and school programs to large-scale campaigns and policy advocacy led by organizations such as Earth Day Network. Schools, governments, businesses, and community groups use the day to promote sustainable practices and increase public engagement.
Each year the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Environmental Office organizes a week of activities for all ages at Ramstein Air Base, featuring tree-planting projects, guided nature excursions, and tours of water-treatment facilities; watch for this year’s event schedule.
April has also been the month of notable, positive milestones. On April 27, 1994, South Africa held its first multiracial national elections—the landmark vote that brought Nelson Mandela to the presidency and is now commemorated as Freedom Day.
Other memorable April moments include Bob Marley’s One Love Peace Concert on April 22, 1978, which famously brought rival political figures together, and the election of Susanna M. Salter as the first female mayor in the United States on April 4, 1887, in Argonia, Kansas; she later lived to be 101.
Amazing, but true: On April 13, 1928, Martin Cooper made the first handheld cellular phone call on a prototype that required 10 hours of charging for just 35 minutes of talk time. While on April 17, 1783, the American Revolutionary War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, marking the independence of the United States.
Germany can look upon a centennial anniversary, when on April 6, 1926, the Deutsche Luft Hansa Aktiengesellschaft, founded in January 1926, began flight operations with its first scheduled flight. From Berlin-Tempelhof Airport, the Fokker-Grulich high-wing aircraft took off for a flight to Zurich via Halle, Erfurt, and Stuttgart.
These events highlight the diverse range of historical significance that April has brought to the world. From political and social changes to scientific breakthroughs, April’s events continue to influence and inspire people around the globe.
Tulip Mania
The Netherlands’ primary tulip season runs from March through mid-May, with fields typically reaching their peak bloom around mid-April. Famous viewing spots include Keukenhof Gardens, the Bollenstreek (near Leiden and Haarlem), and the Noordoostpolder.
The country is the world’s largest exporter of tulips, shipping more than 2.5 billion bulbs each year. In the early 17th
century, rare tulips became highly sought after across the Netherlands. During the Tulip Mania that followed, the market’s collapse nearly provoked a broader social and political crisis.
Witches and May Poles
Alongside flower markets and spring fairs across the region, April in Germany ends with a lively folk tradition: on Hexennacht, mischievous youngsters play pranks such as draping cars and lampposts with toilet paper, “borrowing” trash cans, or decorating doorknobs with shaving cream. In many villages, young people also guard the Maibaum, a May pole festooned with colorful ribbons, through the night between April 30 and May 1 to protect it from would-be thieves from neighboring villages.
April is full of surprises, bringing renewal, color, and freshness—so keep an umbrella handy, rain or shine. Frankfurt Airport is preparing to mark a milestone later this month; details are being kept under wraps for now, with the unveiling planned for next week’s edition. Stay tuned for exciting news!

Fueling the body properly is essential to maintaining strength, endurance, and resilience across the force. According to experts at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Consortium for Health and Military Performance, or CHAMP, at the Uniformed Services University, “nutrition is a mission-critical component of warrior readiness driving physical performance, cognitive function and mental resilience.”
Proper nutrition helps service members “sustain energy, reduce injury risk, accelerate recovery from intense activity, enhance overall combat effectiveness, and prepare them for duty in challenging environments,” according to Robert Goldberg, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist in Outpatient Nutrition Services at Walter Reed, and officials at CHAMP.
March is observed annually as National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme, “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” encouraged people to consider the role protein plays in their diet.
companies promote high-protein labels to make people believe that they need more to be healthy.

“The role protein plays in a person’s diet is a hot topic these days and goes hand in hand with power and strength. People typically think they need more protein than they actually do,” said Goldberg.
New dietary guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture prioritizes whole, nutritious foods, including “high-quality, nutrientdense protein from both animal and plant sources, paired with healthy fats from whole foods such as eggs, seafood, meats, fullfat dairy, nuts, seeds, olives, and avocados.”

foods. The model prioritizes daily intake of “whole, colorful, nutrientdense” vegetables and fruits in their original “fresh form,” along with whole grains, healthy fats and proteins, while encouraging
a reduction in added sugars and highly processed foods.
“Highly processed food has hollowed out our health, driving obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and early death. The truth is simple: real food restores health,” state USDA officials.
With increased attention on protein intake, Goldberg cautioned against overconsumption and stressed the importance of balance and hydration.
Some service members, many who train like athletes, believe they need massive amounts of protein and carbohydrates to build strength and endurance. However, consuming too much protein can
increase saturated fat intake and raise the risk of heart disease, while also contributing to digestive issues, dehydration, and cancer risk.
“Eating in an unhealthy manner can increase the risk for obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease,” said Goldberg.
“I’d recommend visualizing your mealtime plates as half of your plate being non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, salad, cucumber, etc., along with fresh fruit; roughly ¼ of the plate with high fiber starch such as brown rice, whole grain bread, oatmeal, etc.; roughly another ¼ of the plate with lean protein; and an
He added that drinking water throughout the day helps maintain hydration and supports both injury prevention and weight management.
A healthy diet rich in vitamins and nutrients directly impacts mental clarity, alertness, and the ability to manage stress, according to CHAMP. “Proper, sustained nutrition helps prevent burnout and supports immune function, important for maintaining longterm physical health and avoiding illness.” This contributes to force and warrior readiness.
“For those eligible, Walter Reed has several outpatient registered dietitian nutritionists that can help meet dietary goals and needs,” Goldberg added. “In order to schedule a one-on-one appointment with an outpatient RDN, a referral is not needed. Call the Outpatient Nutrition Clinic at 301-295-4065 to schedule an appointment.”

Minutes after U.S. Army Europe and Africa leaders, alongside 21st Theaters Sustainment Command leaders, cut a ceremonial ribbon at the 21st TSC Millrinder innovation center, Mar. 13 at Panzer Kaserne, a thrum of industrial sounds began emanating from a supply warehouse recently converted into one of the most technologically advanced sustainment facilities and the first in the U.S. catalog in Europe.
The grand opening event featured demonstrations of the center’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and opportunities to engage with Soldiers and experts driving innovation. The Millrinder Innovation Center is not only
a U.S. Army asset, but also a collaborative hub for NATO allies, host nations, and private industry, strengthening partnerships and ensuring interoperability across the European theater.
“This is going to be a gamechanger for us as sustainers in our ability to fix forward and innovate at the speed of war and produce at the point of need,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Lalor, the 21st TSC commanding general.
The Innovation Center is a partnership with U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory and is built on three pillars: Innovation, Training, and Readiness. Readiness means Soldiers having what they need to accomplish the mission by closing supply chain gaps, restoring combat
power faster, and empowering innovation at the speed of war by leveraging the full capability of advanced manufacturing.
“This is about driving a culture of innovation, coupled with great material and equipment, and how we are going to put the culture of innovation with that advanced manufacturing equipment to drive readiness effects through the theater,” Lalor added. “This facility will also give us a whole network, end-to-end across echelons, west to east, to enable us to fix forward and supply our warfighters with what they need while solving problems in this theater,” said Lalor.
The facility is designed to enable the U.S. Army to produce the materials it needs at scale and depth to fill supply chain gaps.
To harness ideas and create
effects that will translate into more lethality throughout Europe, the innovation lab is outfitted with advanced manufacturing technology, including multiple types of 3D printers, 3D scanners, robotics systems, sewing machines, and metal cutting machines designed to create a wide range of products identified by Soldiers in the field as items needed in the field. Soldiers can submit innovation ideas through a web-based submission portal https://21sttsc.soldierinnovation. com/sMain/landing or through their Brigade innovation leader.
“If a Soldier identifies a need in the field for a part that currently exists, we can reproduce it and get it to them in a matter of days for a fraction of the usual cost,” said Maj. Ron White, the 21st TSC’s innovation chief. “If a Soldier
submits an innovative idea, like a vehicle part that is currently not in our network catalog, we can work with that Soldier to design and test the idea. This process is designed to encourage innovation and also circumvent the slow and expensive bureaucratic process that is often associated with new ideas. This can save the Army time and money,” said White.
Soldiers whose innovation proposal submissions are selected for development may travel to the facility to receive hands-on training to learn how to operate the lab’s machines and will collaborate with on-site civilian industry experts or allied trades professionals to develop and refine their solutions in a classroom equipped with advanced manufacturing workstations.

The Army Emergency Relief program is conducting their 2026 annual campaign. Which began on March 1, and concludes June 14, 2026, on the Army’s birthday.
The purpose of AER’s campaign is to raise funds for AER. AER provides support to Soldiers and their families during times of financial hardship for critical needs such as rent, utilities, and medical.
This year’s campaign is broken into two goals for the RhienlandPfalz region. The campaign's primary goal is to raise 100 percent awareness of the campaign and the assistance the AER program offers to Soldiers in the region. The secondary goal is to achieve 20 percent of active-duty Soldiers donating to the campaign.
The 21st Theater Sustainment Command has set the lofty goal of raising $210,000 for this year’s campaign, which equals roughly 10 percent of the entire Army’s donations last year.
A main function of AER is the issuance of zero-interest loans. According to Jessee Dean, the AER U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz program director, the loans may be used for utilities, rent, car payments, insurance, and similar needs. Assistance with personal loans, credit cards, legal fees, or taxes are not authorized in the program.
A secondary function of AER is the issuance of grants. The grant
program may be used by Soldiers and immediate family for grants of up to $4,000. Additionally, AER can assist with certain expenses that go beyond the $4000 cap like rental cars, hotels, food, and fuel during events like PCS, emergency travel or funeral expenses. In instances like this it can be a combination of a grant and no-interest loan.
According to Dean, running the program is not just another job, he has an emotional tie to its success.
“I’ve personally used AER twice. One time I owed €3,000 in gas and €1,500 in electricity due to billing issues,” said Dean. “I had to pay it quickly, and AER helped cover that.”
AER is completely donation driven and not government funded. Rheinland-Pfalz was heavily supported by AER throughout last year. According to Dean, during the 2025 campaign, $2.1 million was donated, Army wide. Approximately 16 percent of Soldiers in RheinlandPfalz donated last year, for a total of $31,600. Due to the high costs associated with PCS moves to this region, $1.9M was distributed to Soldiers in Rhheinland-Pfalz via grants and loans.
“Seek out your unit representatives to learn about AER. You can donate online or through your unit representative,” said Dean, for personnel who are interested in donating “There are also manual methods like cash, check, or allotment forms. QR codes have been developed to allow quick digital donations using cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.”

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joseph Curzi 86th Airlift Wing
“Take care of the human, and the Airman will follow.”
For Staff Sgt. Briona Brown, that belief is more than leadership advice, it is a principle shaped by experience. “The biggest thing is always take care of the human,” Brown said. “The Airman will survive. Most of the time, the Airman will exceed if you really take care of the human.”
Now, Brown serves as the noncommissioned officer in charge of the Global Command and Control Systems with the 603rd Air Communications Squadron at Ramstein Air Base. In that role, she leads Airmen responsible for supporting secure communication and cyber capabilities that enable operations across the theater.
The perspective she brings to leadership was built long before she stepped into an NCO position. It began with a setback.
Brown entered the Air Force in 2020 with plans to become a Spanish linguist. She spent months training at the Defense Language Institute, completed her coursework and prepared for the final evaluation that would determine her future career field.
When the test came, she missed the passing score by three questions.
“It was rough,” Brown said. “To kind of succeed for months on end, and then all of a sudden one test changes everything.”
What followed was a period of uncertainty. Brown waited weeks to learn what career field she would retrain into, watching classmates move forward while her own path remained unclear.
“I found out that I failed in July, and I did not get a new job
until probably right at the beginning of October,” she said.
During that time, distance added another layer of difficulty. Brown was navigating retraining and uncertainty while also managing time apart from the person who would later become her wife.
Still, she moved forward.
Eventually, Brown retrained
“She literally sat me down and was like, ‘Hey, you can do all of this,’” Brown said. “She was like, ‘You’re going to keep failing, but you’re going to learn from it, and it’s going to be okay.’”
Brown, by her own description, is an overachiever and perfectionist. Hearing that failure would happen again was not something
and screaming,” Brown said. “I was like, ‘Are you insane?’ But sure enough, it worked.”
That leadership philosophy was put into practice when one of Brown’s Airmen began struggling with several personal and logistical challenges shortly after arriving at Ramstein.
As those issues compounded,

into cyber operations, a career field she now says opened opportunities she had not originally imagined.
At her first duty station, Brown said one of the people who helped her reframe that experience was a senior noncommissioned officer who challenged her to stop viewing failure as final.
she wanted to accept.
“I was like, ‘Nah, I refuse to keep failing,’” she said with a laugh.
Her mentor encouraged her to find an outlet for the frustration she had been carrying. Brown followed that advice reluctantly, trying kickboxing for the first time.
“She told me to try kickboxing
Brown recognized that the situation required more than task management. “He had just built all this up in his head, and instead of doing it, he froze,” she said.
Brown approached the situation by first understanding the person behind the problem. She said she often begins with three questions: Why are you here? What
motivates you? What do you want out of your time in service?
Once those answers were clear, they built a plan together.
“It took a while,” Brown said. “We had to revamp the roadmap a couple times. But once he got there, and once he got the help he needed, after that, he just took off.”
Today, the Airman is pursuing education, improving personally and professionally, and preparing for additional responsibilities within the work center.
“Staff Sgt. Brown has the natural ability to connect with and motivate her Airmen,” said Tech. Sgt. Jenico McMurrey, 603rd Air Communications Squadron noncommissioned officer in-charge. “She is the kind of engaged and inspired leader we need.”
Originally from Atlanta, Brown comes from a military family and said service felt like a natural calling. Several members of her family served, including her father and both grandfathers. Before enlisting, Brown attended Kennesaw State University in Georgia, where she earned a degree in linguistics and studied abroad, developing an interest in language and global cultures. After graduating in 2018, she spent a year working at Walt Disney World before deciding to pursue the Air Force path she had long considered, officially entering the service in 2020.
Though her career did not unfold exactly as she expected, those experiences helped shape the leadership philosophy guiding her work today.
“I’ll say it again, the biggest thing is always take care of the human,” Brown said. “The Airman will survive, if not thrive.”
That mindset continues to shape how Brown leads Airmen and supports the mission.

Accidents happen, and in Germany, they can be expensive. Three essential but affordable insurances can save you and your loved ones from costly harm.
Private Liability Insurance (Private Haftpflicht)
One simple mistake can cost you thousands. If you accidentally injure someone or damage their property, private liability insurance covers the costs. From leaky washing machines to cracked bathroom tiles and scratched flooring, you may find yourself owing your landlord a decent amount to cover renovation costs. Even if you knock over an expensive item in a store, damage a friend's belongings, or cause an accident as a pedestrian or cyclist, this insurance pays for claims and legal fees, preventing financial ruin.
Renters Insurance (Hausratversicherung)
Imagine losing everything in a fire, burglary, or water damage. Renters insurance protects your belongings, including furniture, electronics, and clothing. It also covers costs if your home is uninhabitable due to damage. This small investment ensures you won’t have to replace everything out of pocket. If you currently have a Renters Insurance policy through your stateside agency, be sure to make them aware that you are currently international to ensure that the coverage is applicable in Germany.
Pet Liability Insurance (Haustier-Haftpflichtversicherung)
If your dog bites someone or damages property, you are legally responsible. Pet liability insurance covers medical expenses, legal fees, and repair costs, protecting you from expensive claims. Some breeds are even required by law to have this coverage, making it essential for pet owners.
Legal Insurance (Rechtsschutzversicherung)
Legal disputes can quickly become costly, even when you are in the right. Legal insurance helps cover lawyer and court fees and could protect you from unexpected expenses. In Germany, it is especially useful for renters facing disputes over rent increases, repairs, or termination, as well as for drivers dealing with accidents, car purchases, or traffic violations. This coverage allows you to defend your rights without financial stress.
These insurances are affordable but invaluable in protecting you from financial hardship. Contact your preferred insurance provider today or search online to compare policies and get the best coverage for your needs.

GÖRLITZ from Page 1
With its remarkably well-preserved architecture, cinematic history, and cross-border charm, Görlitz offers plenty to fill a weekend. Here are six ideas for where to start.
Wander the Altstadt (and Look Up!)
Görlitz’s Old Town is its crown jewel. With over 4,000 buildings spanning Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles, the Altstadt will amaze and impress even the most veteran German visitor.
What makes Görlitz’s old town special, though, is the details. As you wander through the cobbled streets, you’ll see ornate doorways, pastel façades, hidden courtyards and so much more. Look up often; some of the most beautiful elements are above eye level. Early morning or sunset is the best time to explore, when the light hits the façades just right. Start at Untermarkt and Obermarkt, then just go where your eyes take you.
Cross the Bridge to Poland
One of the coolest things about Görlitz?
It’s effectively a twin city. Cross the historic pedestrian bridge over the Neisse and you’ll find yourself in Zgorzelec, Poland. It’s a simple but memorable experience: to tour two countries in a five-minute walk. It’s also a subtle reminder of how borders in Europe have shifted over time.
Once in Poland, enjoy yourself. Grab a coffee or a pierogi for lunch (or do a bit of pottery shopping), then stroll back for dinner in Germany.
Step Into a Movie Set
Even if you don’t think you know Görlitz, you’ve probably seen it on screen. The town has been used as a filming location for numerous international productions thanks to its pristine historic appearance.
Movie fans might recognize locations from films like The Grand Budapest Hotel or Inglourious Basterds. There are informal walking routes you can follow, or you can simply enjoy the feeling of walking through a place that looks almost too perfect to be real.
Visit St. Peter and Paul’s Church
Dominating the skyline, the late Gothic church of St. Peter and Paul is impossible to miss. Inside, you’ll find a stunning “sun organ,” one of the largest and most impressive in Germany.
If you can, time your visit with an organ concert or rehearsal: the acoustics are incredible, and it transforms the space into something truly moving. Even without music, the scale and craftsmanship alone make it worth the stop.
Explore the Görlitz Department Store (Kaufhaus)
This might sound like an odd recommendation, but this is no ordinary department store. The Görlitz Kaufhaus is an architectural masterpiece from the early 20th century, featuring a grand atrium with a glass ceiling and sweeping staircases.

Even though the department store is in the process of being refurbished, it is worth a look from the outside (and is definitely worth stepping inside if open) to admire the design. It is a place where visitors often stop just to take a quick look and end up lingering far longer than expected.
Walk or Cycle Along the Neisse River
For something quieter, head down to the riverbank paths. The Neisse offers a peaceful contrast to the ornate Old Town, with tree-lined trails that are perfect for walking or cycling.
This is where you’ll see local life unfold – dog walkers, cyclists, and families enjoying the outdoors. Follow the path a little further out of town and you’ll find spots that feel surprisingly remote. It’s an ideal way to slow down and experience Görlitz beyond its postcard-perfect center.
Getting to Görlitz
By car, Görlitz is 7 hours from Kaiserslautern, 6.5 hours from Stuttgart, and 6 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options.
