Ramstein unveils C-130J flight simulator Story and photos by Senior Airman Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of its new C-130J Super Hercules Flight Simulator Aug. 24 on Ramstein. The project is the result of a collaborative effort, as the simulator itself is owned by Air Mobility Command but housed in a U.S. Air Forces in Europe and 86th Airlift Wing building. “A big thank you goes to … the collaborative effort,” said Col. Eric Mayheu, AMC Aircrew Operations and Training Division chief. “This has been an ongoing project for the past seven years. This design, this building, this device and everything else that needs to come online took seven years to be able to have what you have here.” The new facility is expected to save USAFE approximately $250,000 a year in temporary duty costs as it will alleviate the need for pilots to be sent back to the U.S. to train on simulators. amstein provided rapid access capabilities for more than 5,000 service members from the U.S. and 11 NATO allies during exercise Swift Response which kicked off Aug. 17. As a premier power projection platform and the largest mobility hub in U.S. Air Forces in Europe, the

Ramstein flightline provided a stable location for allied nations to transition in and out during the exercise. By contributing this capability along with providing Airmen to ensure mission success, participants were able to build cohesive teams, strengthen relationships among allied nations and contribute to regional stability while demonstrating commitments to NATO. CSAF speaks about CMSAF role by Senior Airmen Taylor Curry 3rd Combat Camera SAN ANTONIO — Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III addressed Airmen about the importance of leadership during the 2015 Air Force Sergeants Association Professional Airmen’s Conference in San Antonio Aug. 26. He specifically spoke about what it takes to be a chief master sergeant of the Air Force and gave examples of leadership by past and present chief master sergeants of the Air Force. “It’s only appropriate since we are at an AFSA conference that we remind ourselves that we are in the presence of some legendary Air Force sergeants right now,” Welsh said, referring to the former chief master sergeants of the Air Force in attendance. “These are amazing men, people who have truly answered their

nation’s call and took their oath seriously.” During the conference, the general spoke of how the chiefs had inspired generations of Airmen and those still to come. “We really should treasure these heroes while we still have them,” Welsh said. “These men are truly second to none. They influence every Airman in this great Air Force and are an incredible band of brothers.” Welsh later asked, “what makes a chief master sergeant of the Air Force?” He continued by explaining to the audience the answer in his own words. “A lot of people think you’re a great chief because you are a chief master sergeant of the Air Force; it’s actually the other way around, you become chief master sergeant of the Air Force because you are a great

chief,” he said. “That’s something all of our younger enlisted need to keep in mind.” Welsh said he believes that the chief master sergeant of the Air Force has to have unyielding integrity, be tireless in their service to Airmen and their families and have enduring excellence in everything they do, summing up the Air Force’s core values. “We try to define what a chief master sergeant of the Air Force is with one word, but that is impossible because they are all different and unique,” Welsh said. “I believe in order to be the chief master sergeant of the Air Force, you have to be passionate about the Air Force and its Airmen; you have to have an unbelievable amount of pride in yourself; you have to have near perfect performance over the course of your career.”

The AFSA event had Welsh thinking about the future of the Air Force and who would be the next chief master sergeants of the Air Force. “Don’t worry Chief (Cody), you’re not going anywhere anytime soon,” Welsh said jokingly. “But remember, being chief master sergeant of the Air Force has nothing to do with race, gender or background; it has only to do with leadership. My question to those considering following that path is, ‘are you fit to carry the sword?’” The AFSA’s mission is to advocate improved quality of life and economic fairness that will support the well-being of the total force enlisted personnel and their families, to elected and military leaders. They hosted this year’s conference for Airmen to receive a senior leadership perspective and for attendees to ask questions about the direction of the Air Force and its future.

Additionally, it will save the pilots two or three days of travel time, effectively freeing them up for availability for combatant command commanders, should the need arise, said Mayheu. Money and time saved aren’t the only benefits of the multimillion dollar simulator. “To be able to practice a high-density, high-difficulty mission in, quite frankly, a low-threat environment here gives a feeling of confidence as you go into battle,” said Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th AW commander. “As a crew member, when you’ve (practiced a maneuver) 10 times already and when you actually get a threat, (this experience) is priceless.” The simulator will increase the readiness of everyone involved by giving addition-

could be thrown off and the entire mission could be delayed,” Logan said. Since the beginning of the exercise, Ramstein was prepared to back up 5,000 military forces, including approximately 165 Airmen. According to Tech. Sgt. Levi Rodney, 86th OSS air traffic controller, the scale of the exercise poses unique challenges. “We received a lot more aircraft from home stations and guard units that are going to be used during the exercise,” Rodney said. “There are a lot of Army vehicles that tend to clog up some of our operations on the ground. When they do this, they can get in the way of other aircraft, so we as controllers must make accommodations to

Logan says this exercise is an opportunity to improve situational awareness as well as improve processes at Ramstein that involve deploying personnel and working in high-tempo areas. “These exercises help utilize your critical thinking skills,” Logan said. “They also train us in executing contingency plans, which are of the utmost importance here.” Swift Response is taking place in Germany, Italy and Bulgaria from Aug. 18 to Sept. 15.

86th AW welcomes back DODDS teachers

Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander, speaks to teachers, school administrators and support staff from the KMC during a teacher forum Aug. 27 on Ramstein. More than 600 teachers from 11 Department of Defense Dependents Schools attended.

Story and photo by Senior Airman Damon Kasberg 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Teachers, school administrators and support staff from the KMC attended a teacher forum Aug. 27 on Ramstein.

Hosted by Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander, the forum provided him an opportunity to welcome back teachers after summer recess, discuss installation matters impacting schools and thank them for what they do. “What you do as teachers is so important; you need

good support and partnership,” Thomas said. “I want everyone to know you have that from the 86th Airlift Wing and installation commander. If there is something we can do better or help with, let’s sit down and talk about it. As a parent, I know if you’re successful, our children are successful,

Senior leaders present new ‘Little Blue Book’ by Air Education and Training Command Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody delivered the initial handout of the pamphlet, “America’s Air Force: A Profession of Arms,” to the Air Force’s newest Airmen during Airmen’s Week Aug. 27. The pamphlet represents the next evolution of the “Little Blue Book,” and provides Airmen with instant

access to the core guides, values, codes and creeds that guide Airmen during their service in the profession of arms. “Our people are the greatest part of our Air Force and when America’s sons and daughters choose to join our ranks, it is our responsibility to develop them into Airmen,” James said. “As Airmen, we are charged with upholding a culture founded on professionalism, dignity and respect — that’s what our core values are about.” During the visit, Welsh explained the importance of professionalism to the Airmen. “What’s in this document is nothing new to Airmen but

is a reminder that service to one’s country is no ordinary calling,” Welsh said. “America holds us in high regard because of what we stand for: integrity, service and excellence. Those who wear this uniform should continuously reflect on our commitment to our nation and each other.” Welsh added that the core values are a commitment found in the oaths we take and are represented in large and small ways around our Air Force every day. Cody explained the significance of the Little Blue Book See book, Page 5

and when our children are successful, we’re all successful.” There are 11 Department of Defense Dependents Schools and more than 600 teachers in the KMC. During the forum, they were able to meet new faculty members, receive briefings from Military Family Life Consultants, Family Advocacy Outreach and other speakers including Garianne Wrenchy, 2016 Kaiserslautern district teacher of the year, who shared a few motivational words. “We’re so used to doing what we do that we forget what we do is special,” Wrenchy said. “We forget to celebrate our profession and our accomplishments. We’re too busy looking at our students’ accomplishments. I challenge everyone sitting in this room today to think and

remember the kids for whom you’ve made a difference. I think you’ll find there are a lot of them.” With the new school year starting, teachers had an opportunity to listen firsthand to the words of support from the installation commander and teacher of the year. “I thought the forum was great,” said Christine Aragon, Ramstein Elementary School Spanish teacher. “It was refreshing to see the leadership we have here, and our teachers of the year are just a snippet of what Kaiserslautern has to offer. I’m excited to start a new year.” The KMC enrolls more than 7,400 students across five elementary schools, one intermediate school, four middle schools and two high schools located on Air Force and Army installations per school year.

September: Suicide Prevention Month by Staff Sgt. Dylan Forbes 86th Maintenance Group September in Germany has always been a favorite month for many in the KMC. Events such as the Bad Duerkheim Wurstmarkt and the BernkastelKues wine festival hold a place in many people’s hearts long after they leave. However, September is not only about having great adventures; it is also a time to address a topic that most of us should talk more openly about: suicide. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and according to a 2013 report by Veteran Affairs, at least 22 veterans commit suicide every 65 minutes. It is a problem that we must continue to address. Suicide and depression not only affect activeduty military, but affects Department of Defense employees, civilians and spouses as well. Most people have known at least one other person to have struggled with emotional issues and stress, and many have, unfortunately, known someone who has taken their own life. To raise awareness of suicide this year, a number of events will be happening around the KMC during the month of September. On Sept. 10, World Suicide Prevention Day, a panel discussion will be held at the chapel on Baumholder. Book, from Page 3

Military Family Life Consultants: MFLCs provide short term, situational, problem-solving counseling and services to service members and their families. Service providers are licensed clinical counselors, and services are confidential and private with no records kept. MFLCs are mandated reporters of child abuse, domestic abuse and duty-to-warn situations. A Ramstein MFLC can be reached at 0152-242-11233 and Army members can call 0170-369-3292 or 0175-792-3332. 21st STB families celebrate back-to-school with bowl-a-thon Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr. 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

ore than 40 Soldiers and family members from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Special Troops Battalion gathered at the Ramstein Air Base bowling ally to celebrate the beginning of the new school year with pizza and bowling Aug. 24. “It’s a wonderful event because we have an opportunity to have all of our little ones come together, some of them have never met each other before, and now they have a chance to meet each other, make new friends and get ready for the new school year,” said Lt. Col. Caprissa Brown-Slade, 21st STB commander. The purpose of the event was not only to give children a chance to blowoff some steam prior to the new school

year, but also to provide them with some much needed school supplies that can be difficult to come by at times. “We wanted to do something to give back,” BrownSlade said. “We wanted to do something to donate to the cause and ensure our kids have some supplies to go back to school with.” Weeks prior to the event, the 21st TSC’s family readiness support assistant C. Christina Lewis and other volunteers gathered various school supplies such as paper, notebooks, pens and pencils through donations to be given to school-aged children at the event. “There are some families that may be a little strapped, and they need the extra help and school supplies never go out of season,” Lewis said. “You can buy your children school supplies at the beginning of the year, and they may need something in the middle of the year. This way

they’ll have more than what they need.” Through the donations, the STB was able to collect enough supplies to fill 35

bags that were handed out to children. They were also able to collect enough supplies to fill a box and a half that will be held by Lewis and given to

newcomers and their families as they arrive to the 21st TSC throughout the year. See bowl, Page 13

Emergency managers emphasize planning during National Preparedness Month by Jess Echerri Air Force Civil Engineer Center Public Affairs TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — September is National Preparedness Month and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center is leading the charge for servicewide participation. With a theme of “Don’t wait. Communicate. Make your emergency plan today,” this year’s focus is on emergency planning, including development of evacuation plans and family communication plans in the event of separation. “Preparedness is the shared responsibility of our entire nation,” said Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work. “Preparing individuals, families, components and installations for disasters and emergencies, from flooding to an active shooter, ensures the strength of our workforce and our ability to continue to safeguard U.S. security.” During the month, each

week will be focused on planning for a specific hazard: flooding in week one; wildfires in week two; hurricanes in week three: and power outages in week four. The month culminates in National PrepareAthon Day Sept. 30. “September 1 through 29 is more for passing out information through pamphlets or commander’s calls or other avenues bases might use,” said James Martin, emergency management education and training analyst in AFCEC’s Readiness Directorate. “On National PrepareAthon Day Sept. 30, we want to see bases actually conducting an activity. It could be table-top exercises, drills or a wide range of other activities.” To lessen the workload on base-level emergency management offices, emergency management experts at AFCEC put together a marketing guide with links to social media posts, graphics and techniques to dissemi-

nate information effectively throughout the month. “The emphasis should be to increase the comprehensiveness of your campaign, engaging all members of your community and highlighting the importance of preparedness, not just during National

Preparedness Month, but year round,” said Harley Connors, AFCEC emergency management division chief. All Air Force bases are encouraged to participate in National Preparedness Month and National PrepareAthon Day.

“It’s important to have time set aside that focuses on preparedness because when people have the right information, they generally do the right thing when the real emergency happens,” Martin said. “It literally translates into saving lives.”

SMC helps schools prepare for first day

(Left to right) Staff Sgt. Jessica Gregor, Sgt. 1st Class Marcus Mitchell, Sgt. Maj. Michael Ledesma and Master Sgt. Addley Saimbert, all members of the Rheinland-Pfalz chapter of the Sergeant Morales Club and NCOs assigned to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, move boxes and furniture at Sembach Middle and Elementary Schools Aug. 26. The first official day of school for the Department of Defense Education Activity students was Aug. 31.

Story and photos by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs “We are happy and ready to help in any way that is needed,” said 1st Sgt. Ryan Sattelberg of Headquarters Company, 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, when he, along with other members of the Rheinland-Pfalz chapter of the Sergeant Morales Club and additional volunteers arrived at Sembach Elementary and Middle Schools Aug. 26. They had come to assist the teachers and staff in preparing for the beginning of another school year. The first official day of school for Department of Defense Education Activity students was Aug. 31. However, teachers, administrators and other DODEA personnel started a few days

early in order to organize and prepare. “The beginning of the school year is always very stressful,” said Tiffiney Weddle, Sembach Elementary School principal. “There is always so much to do and never enough time or enough help.” But on this particular day, there was extra help. The Soldiers got right to work. Some assisted teachers inside the buildings by moving boxes and furniture. Others tackled the tall, 2-foot wild weeds growing directly in front of the elementary school. Equipped with weed cutters and lawn mowers supplied by the Soldiers, they cleared a great deal of the area. For the STB command team, the event meant more than just allowing kids to bowl a few frames and have a couple slices of pizza. It was an opportuniy to build bonds and show family members the support available to them within their military community. Morales, from Page 11

School, was one of many who expressed their appreciation for the Soldiers’ efforts. “It means so much having these Soldiers here helping me set up my rooms and moving all of this furniture,” Hampton said. “Because of their help, I’m already set up and can now start preparing my lesson plans.” Others expressed gratitude for the Morales Club members’ outdoor cleanup efforts. “These Soldiers have made the front of our building look wonderful — it will give a better first impression to parents and students

“We have a new theme called ‘strengthening the bond,’ or STB, and this is where it starts,” Brown-Slade said. “It’s about building the community up and making sure our family members see these folks here and understand that we do have a family readiness group available to help link them to the community. “We need our families to know

when they arrive,” said Michele Mekus, Sembach Elementary School secretary and a former 5th Quartermaster rigger. The Sergeant Morales Club, established in 1973 by Lt. Gen. George S. Blanchard, is the European version of the Audie Murphy Club in the United States. The purpose of both clubs is to promote the highest ideals of integrity, professionalism and leadership for enlisted Soldiers. Becoming a member of either of these clubs is an extremely competitive and rigorous process. “One of the most important things we do is community service,” said Sgt. 1st Class

that we are together and we will support each other,” Lewis continued. “There are times when our Soldiers have to go away and leave the rest of their family at home, and we have to be able to support each other during those times.” The FRSA relies heavily on the volunteer work of others. Without the work of volunteers, events such as the

Marcus Mitchell, president of the local Morales chapter. “This is one of the ways that we assist our schools.” The club also mentors students during the school year. Weddle summed up her sentiments about the NCOs’ efforts. “Words cannot express how I feel about these Soldiers coming out here and volunteering,” Weddle said. “We want our little ones to feel welcome on their first day back.” “It is fantastic to have support from our local units,” Mekus added. “Having the Soldiers here reminds us of who we are supporting and why we are all here.”

Trippstadt celebrates charcoal burners’ fest Trippstadt will celebrate its annual “Kohlenbrennerfest, charcoal burners’ fest, Saturday and Sunday. The village fest will demonstrate the traditional burning of charcoal as well as other old craftsmanship. The iron works museum will present a painter’s display during the villiage fest, and there will be activities for the children and live music. Another special attraction will be the smithy fest featuring smiths from the Rhein River and Magdeburg. Goldsmiths and silversmiths will show off their fine and elaborate works, and

a regional coppersmith will create animal figures. The charcoal burners’ fest will officially open at 5 p.m. near the charcoal kiln on Meilerplatz. Members of local clubs and associations will be in charge of demonstrating the burning of charcoal. Traditionally a week prior to the event, members pile up huge amounts of wood to build a coal kiln. A chimney is surrounded by sticks and covered with turf. The brushwood in the chimney is lit and the kiln starts burning. The charcoal burners then watch the burning, day and night, for up to a week, keeping the air outside the kiln. If the smoke coming out is blue, the burning process is

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The traditional “Wurstmarkt, the world’s biggest wine fest, will start Sept. 11, only 35 km east of Kaiserslautern. For the 599th time, Bad Duerkheim along the German Wine Road will host this traditional fest in two parts: from Sept. 11 to 15 and again from Sept. 18 to 21. Organizers expect about 600,000 visitors from all over the world. An amusement park with about 300 vendors and ride owners will be set up on the fest grounds covering about 485 square feet next to the “Duerkheimer Fass, the world’s biggest wine barrel. The barrel actually houses a restaurant and if it were used as a barrel, it could hold almost 450 gallons of wine. The Wurstmarkt, meaning sausage fair, is almost 600 years old. Festivalgoers ate

enormous amounts of sausages during the event in the first part of the 19th century, giving the popular sausage market its name. However, the main attractions of the festival are the 36 small wine tents known as “Schubkärchler,â€? or wheelbarrows, because vintners would roll wine barrels on wheelbarrows up to “Monte Sancti Michaeli,â€? Michelsberg hill, to quench pilgrims’ thirst during the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day,

pilgrims visited the little chapel on top of the hill. On the way up, vendors sold their goods. Eventually church dignitaries no longer accepted this kind of pilgrimage, and market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg and the sausage fair was born. In 1910, city officials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michael’s day because of better weather. In 1926, the Wurstmarkt got extended by a day, in 1951

Remembering bus safety ‘do’s’ and ‘dont’s’ by Otto Mueller Kaiserslautern District Transportation supervisor Meeting children at the bus stop, parents need to: • Wait on the same side of the street as the bus stop. • Go to their child at the bus stop. Parents and children should not: • Wait in a parked car or in a building. • Wait across the street from the bus stop. • Allow their child to come to them. • Board the bus without proper authority. Only registered students, bus driver, security attendant and school officials are authorized to board a school bus. Overall, when parents meet their child at the bus stop, take charge of the situation. As the adult, parents can reduce the risk of their child and control the danger. Five Basic Safety Rules for riding the bus: • Be on time — walk, do not run to the bus stop. • When waiting for the bus, take at least three large steps away from the curb. • Take a seat on the bus and stay in

it while the bus is moving. If there are seat belts, buckle up. • When getting off the bus, take three large steps away from the curb and wait for the bus to leave before crossing the street. • Never cross the street in front of or behind the bus. Parents should ensure their children know and use the safest route possible from home to and from the bus stop. Teach children how to safely cross the street and use pedestrian crosswalks and traffic-lighted intersections, where available. Parents should ensure children wear clothing that is easily visible to motorists. Parents can greatly improve their children’s visibility when they put reflective tape or devices on their children’s outerwear, book bags or other carried items. Danger Zones: Parents should educate their child on the danger zones. Parents and their child need to take extra precautions when near a school bus. Parents need to teach their children never to cross in front of or behind a bus. Reinforce children that traffic in Europe does not stop for loading and unloading of school buses.

Stress good behavior on the bus — good behavior and safety go handin-hand. On or around buses, students must conduct themselves in accordance with the following school bus rules. Department of Defense Education Activity behavior standards for students: • Obey the driver or adult. • Enter and exit the bus safely, and always show a bus pass • Stay properly seated and use seat

belts when available. • Keep hands, feet and other body parts to oneself. • Do not throw things. • Do not throw anything out the window. • Remain quiet and do not disturb the driver or others. • No profanity, indecency, smoking, prohibited items or vandalism. • Do not eat, drink or chew gum on the bus. • Be responsible and be safe.

No Escape (R) “No Escape” centers on an American businessman as he and his family settle into their new home in Southeast Asia. Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city. Starring Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan

Southpaw (R)

Your community, your website.

Billy “The Great” Hope is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent display of offensive fighting. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral.
