Ramstein celebrates Air Force’s 70th birthday Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

More than 600 Ramstein members attended the Air Force ball at the officers’ club to celebrate the Air Force’s 70th birthday and the 65th anniversary of the base, Sept. 23. Airmen commemorate the history and heritage of the Air Force in this longstanding tradition while building a sense of camaraderie and morale. Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark, 3rd Air Force commander, was the guest speaker for the ball. During his speech, four Airmen from the crowd recited the Airman’s Creed. “We have 12 seconds of innovation that put us into a different era and that gave us the DNA to continue to innovate. We have five core competencies that we have done better than any other air force in the world since See BIRTHDAY, Page 2

USAFE soccer team practices for AIRCOM Championship Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Kristof Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The United States Air Forces in Europe men’s and women’s soccer teams practiced in Kaiserslautern, Sept. 13 to 17, in preparation for the Allied Air Command Soccer Championship in Lechfeld, Germany, Sept. 18 to 22. The team rosters include some of the most elite athletes from USAFE. Many of these Airmen have played on this team together in the past and all of them have a long history of playing the game at a high level. Lt. Taylor Moore played soccer at the University of Florida and after commissioning through the U.S. Air

Force Officer Training School played two years on the All Air Force soccer team. Players from the All Air Force soccer team are often recruited to then play for the USAFE team. “I appreciate the tight knit atmosphere of our team,” said Moore, who is playing on the USAFE team for the first time. “Playing for the USAFE team allows you to make connections with people all over Europe you’d otherwise never have a chance of meeting and that can really help streamline the Air Force mission.” Women’s Team Captain 1st Lt. Leah McNell, 48th Medical Support Squadron clinical engineering chief, agreed. “Traveling Europe, being stationed See SOCCER, Page 9

BIRTHDAY, from Page 1

1947, and we will always do them better than any air force in the world. We have three core values: integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do, and that’s what we live by and we will always live by because they will continue to make us the best ever. Twenty-seven years of war and we have more to come and we need to be ready for it. Eighteen Medal of Honor recipients who represent us well, who we look to for inspiration at every moment, but we need to hold them up because they mean something to us and our proud heritage. One constitution that we all serve. And then, the thing that makes it all work, is our Airmen. Those four Airmen who just recited the creed represent everybody in this room and everybody in our Air Force because that’s what makes all that other stuff work. That’s why we have been the best for 70 years. That’s the glue that holds all of this together, and that’s the glue that’s going to make us continue to be the best in the world.” He then asked the attendees, “What does all of that add up to?” In unison, the crowd replied with “70.” “That’s the formula,” he said,

tying his speech to the 70th birthday theme. Clark then thanked the Airmen and their families for everything they do. After the speech, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s Wings of Dixie played live music while Airmen danced until the event’s end.

Some Airmen reflected on the night. “I think tradition is extremely important, particularly within the branches of service,” said Senior Airman Corey Klucker, 721st Aerial Port Squadron air transportation specialist. “We have other branches

of service that have had 200 years to establish traditions, and being that we’re such an infant service, we need to make sure that 200 years from now, those Airmen have a tradition where they can build morale and camaraderie and have a sense of identity.”

Ramstein to conduct several Giant Voice tests The 86th Communications Squadron is scheduled to conduct several tests of its “Giant Voice” capability at Air Force installations across the Kaiserslautern Military Community next week. All 18 loudspeakers will be tested Monday. Once each loudspeaker starts, the test may last for up to an hour. Each system will play every warning tone. On Thursday and Oct. 6, the community can expect to hear testing from all speaker stacks throughout the day to include a “system-wide” test where all speakers broadcast at the same time. The testing is necessary due to recent upgrades, said Lt.

Col. Steven P. Brummitt, 86th CS commander. “We’ve made some improvements to the system to ensure its reliability and clarity,” said Brummitt. “It’s important that we give each and every system a proper testing so we ensure it can deliver for us in the future.” The loudspeakers, also known as giant voice systems, are scattered throughout Ramstein Air Base, Kapaun Air Station, and Vogelweh Military Complex. Brummitt added that in addition to the one-time testing next week, routine testing will continue between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Tuesday. The 86th Airlift Wing Command Post is also scheduled to conduct its own giant voice tests every Wednesday at noon, he said.

USAFE Airmen prepare for Toxic Trip exercise Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Air Combat Command Aircrew Flight Equipment instructors assigned to the 436th Training Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, trained U.S. Air Forces in Europe AFE Airmen on Ramstein Sept. 19 to prepare for the upcoming NATO Toxic Trip in Geilenkirchen. Toxic Trip is an exercise hosting 13 NATO allies work-

ing together to standardize the decontamination process in the event of a chemical attack or exposure to chemical agents. The USAFE Airmen took a five-day-long course to learn the processes before Toxic Trip, while earning credits for their Community College of the Air Force degree. During the course, AFE Airmen learned how to carefully remove external equipment while decontaminating them after simulated exposure

Senior Master Sgt. Bryan McCoy, Aberdeen Proving Ground Air Force Life Cycle Management Center aircrew flight equipment superintendent, walks through a decontamination line during the aircrew contamination mitigation course Sept. 19 on Ramstein. The course taught AFE Airmen how to decontaminate equipment they do not normally use in their day to day mission.

to chemical agents. In the event chemicals contaminate aircrew members, AFE Airmen will respond immediately to set up a decontamination line. “Your responsibility is to get somewhere within 72 hours, have that line stood up and be capable of processing numbers safely anywhere in the world,” said Master Sgt. Michael Doane, 436th TRS ACC AFE instructor. “The importance of it is to know what you’re doing before you

go so that you don’t need training when you get there.” This is the first time the course has been held in a location other than Dyess AFB. “This is the only Aircrew Contamination Mitigation course in the Air Force,” said Master Sgt. Daniel Tripalei, 436th TRS ACC AFE instructor. “Rather than sending (thirteen) people to Dyess, they send two of us out here and it helps everybody.” Bringing the course to Ramstein saved the Air Force

roughly $24,000 in travel expenses, but that’s not the only benefit of this course. Airmen who usually work with flight equipment specific to cargo planes were given the chance to work with Joint Strike Fighter F-35A Lightning II equipment. Since AFE can work on any air frame, Doane said it’s important for AFE Airmen to know how to deal with the equipment specific to aircraft outside of their current mission.

Master Sgt. Michael Doane, 436th Training Squadron Aircrew Flight Equipment instructor from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, removes over garments from Senior Master Sgt. Bryan McCoy, Aberdeen Proving Ground Air Force Life Cycle Management Center AFE superintendent, during the aircrew contamination mitigation course Sept. 19 on Ramstein. Doane demonstrated how to properly remove the outer garments of the flight equipment as part of the decontamination process.

Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 786th Force Support Squadron hosted tryouts for the Ramstein Women’s Volleyball Team at the Southside Fitness Center from Sept. 12 to 14. Spanning three days, 13 women from the Kaiserslautern Military Community showed up to compete for an opportunity to play on the team.

“There won’t be a set roster for the team due to a majority of players being military, and jobs come first,” said Shane Spice, Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams Coach. “For each competition there’ll be 10 available spots on the roster, for anyone putting in the work. Other women interested in playing volleyball are still encouraged to come to the practices.” Practice for the women’s team is every Monday and

Wednesday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. “Everyone who came to participate in the tryouts was enthusiastic and motivated,” said Spice. “Most of them have previous experience playing or coaching, and I think we will be very com-

petitive with the other teams.” With the team’s first tournament on Oct. 7 to 8 approaching quickly, Spice explained his intent with coaching volleyball at Ramstein. “I’m looking forward to providing opportunities for the men and women here to play

volleyball,” said Spice. “The goal is to have a good time and build morale.” The Southside Fitness Center has an open play segment on the courts every Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and is open to anyone who wants to play.

Air Force impacts Airmen 70 years and counting Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For 70 years, Airmen have dedi-

cated their lives to the Air Force mission to Fly, Fight, and Win. Through innovation, sacrifice and perseverance, Airmen have left a great impact on the Air Force. Furthermore, the

“My favorite part about the Air Force is the people. It is truly inspiring to interact with such a diverse and innovative global workforce and to know that we are working toward the same mission and vision. The Air Force has provided me a way to provide for my family while simultaneously providing me continued education and countless opportunities to travel the world. Serving in the Air Force has given me the opportunity to provide a service to my country that some people are not able to do. By being a part of the Air Force, I have been able to serve in unique situations with outstanding joint service and multinational teammates to solve issues that have global impact.” – Capt. Angela Petersen, 86th Airlift Wing executive officer.

“The only reason I’m in Europe is because of the Air Force. Traveling is definitely one of the best parts of my life. The Air Force has given me stability. The United States wouldn’t be the way it is today without the men and women in uniform. I feel like I’m a part of something bigger. It doesn’t always feel good waking up at six in the morning for physical training, but when you’re down range you really see how it affects the world.” – Senior Airman Victor Murray, 1st Combat Communications Squadron cyber systems operator.

“My favorite part about the Air Force is the history and heritage, and the brotherhood that we have. As an aircrew member, we are not just Airmen but we are family. We are on the road with each other and are in each other’s lives more than just nine-to-five. There are times where we’re together for more than 75 hours a week. The Air Force has taught me to be selfless, to put others ahead of myself whether it be co-workers or their family members. The Air Force has taught me that I’m a part of something greater than myself. I represent not only myself but my family name and my squadron. Serving in the Air Force to me means a lot. It means I am able to protect and serve not only my fellow countrymen, but those who are unable to protect and serve themselves.” – Senior Airman Crystal Reese, 37th Airlift Squadron aircraft loadmaster.

Air Force has left a great impact on the Airmen. After asking Airmen from different career fields how the Air Force has affected them, this is what they said: “My favorite part about the Air Force is all of the people that I have met so far in my career. The Air Force has given me the opportunity to travel, it has given me the opportunity to experience things that I don’t think I would have ever experienced had I not left California. It’s given me the opportunity to continue my education and the opportunity to meet so many amazing people. The Air Force means loyalty, family, honor, adaptation and the best. We are the best, and we excel at everything we do.” – Tech. Sgt. Trier Stewart, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa knowledge administration non-commissioned officer in charge.

“All of the experiences and people you get to meet from different walks of life has to be the best part of the Air Force. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the Air Force. The discipline, taking care of my family – a lot of those things you learn from the Air Force family. I couldn’t imagine my life without the Air Force at this point. Someday I’ll be ready to transition to that civilian status, but right now I wouldn’t know anything besides serving the Air Force.” – Chief Master Sgt. Shawn Jones, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Standardizations and Evaluations aviation resource managers functional.

“My favorite part of the Air Force is that they take care of their people. I see it every day with my married friends and their children. The Air Force does what it can to make sure that they are taken care of. The Air Force has made me a better leader. Being able to go to school on the Air Force’s dime, I’ve been able to better myself and develop myself. Serving in the Air Force means that I am doing something bigger and better than myself. That’s part of the reason why I joined the Air Force. I wanted to serve my country and be a part of something great.” – Tech. Sgt. Taurie McCurdy, 422nd Medical Squadron environmental health operations non-commissioned officer in charge.

Ramstein Airmen crush Alpha Warrior competition

Staff Sgt. Brina Rustand, 86th Munitions Squadron munitions inspector, leaps onto a battering ram on the Alpha Warrior’s Battle Rig obstacle course during the Alpha Warrior regional competition Sept. 23 on Ramstein. Rustand was the top female competitor to complete the course and will move on to the championship in San Antonio, Texas, in November.

Barclay Stockett, Alpha Warrior pro, congratulates Staff Sgt. Brina Rustand, 86th Munitions Squadron munitions inspector, after she successfully completed the Alpha Warrior’s Battle Rig obstacle course during the Alpha Warrior regional competition Sept. 23 on Ramstein. Rustand won first place as the top female competitor with a run time of 3 minutes, 25 seconds.

by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs White chalk dust danced in the air as Airman after Airman battled battering rams, cliff hangers, broken bars, and every other challenge standing between them and the ultimate goal: becoming the Alpha Warrior Regional Competition champion. Through the Air Force Services Activity Alpha Warrior Program, the 86th Force Support Squadron hosted the Alpha Warrior Tour at Ramstein Sept. 22 to 23. The tour, lasting from April to October 2017, will introduce Airmen at 41 bases — 32 stateside and nine overseas — to the Alpha Warrior Program. Showcasing the program’s Battle Rig, a five-lane obstacle course designed to test strength, agility, and stamina, were three Alpha Warrior pros and American Ninja Warrior celebrities — Barclay Stockett, Karsten Williams, and Kevin Klein. “What our armed forces do for us is so significant and we would never be able to pay any of our troops back for what you guys do,” Stockett said. “But being able to do this little thing and bring some smiles and fun to the bases and Airmen, it just makes me really happy. I already appreciate you guys so much, but it just brings so much more appreciation and I’m really proud to be a part of that. It feels like a job that’s way bigger than just us; it’s really cool.” Ramstein and Aviano Air Base, Italy, Airmen competed against one another to be the top male or female athlete to successfully complete the course. Two Ramstein Airmen emerged victorious to claim the titles, and will move on to the championship in San Antonio, Texas in November.

Kaiserslautern Military Community members watch and participate in practicing on the Alpha Warrior’s Battle Rig obstacle course during the Alpha Warrior Tour Sept. 22 on Ramstein. During the tour, Alpha Warrior pros Barclay Stockett, Karsten Williams, and Kevin Klein taught Airmen the best techniques for successfully completing the course.

“I didn’t expect it to happen, I thought someone was going to come along and rip my time up, but it ended up being me,” said the top male contestant Staff Sgt. Cory Aita, 86th Communications Squadron program manager. “I’m super proud and I’m trying to take my family with me to San Antonio and give it my best shot there as well.” For the top female contestant, Staff Sgt. Brina Rustand, 86th Munitions Squadron munitions inspector, she only had one thing going through her mind while she gripped, swung, and climbed her way through the course. “It was pretty cliché, but don’t fall,” Rustand said. “Just one more grab, then one more grab, you got this. Slow and steady, don’t rush it. I was trying to make sure every move was slow and calculated. I was going through one step at a time, and before I knew it I was on the final step. It still hasn’t really set in.” For the three celebrities, visiting different bases and meeting Airmen has been the best part of the tour. “My favorite part is getting to travel to different Air Force bases, a chance to interact with the Airmen and see what they do on a day-to-day basis,” Williams said. “Really it’s a way to

serve them; they serve our country, so it’s a way to provide them a different way of training, to get away from the day-to-day grind, and have something fun to do outside of the normal regiment.” While the AFSA Alpha Warrior Program is not an official part of the Air Force fitness program, it incorporates the four domains of Comprehensive Airmen Fitness — physical, spiritual, mental, and social. Every air base visited by the Alpha Warrior program gets to keep the Battle Rig or slightly bigger Battle Station brought to them for the competitions held throughout the tour. Airmen continue to train and exercise on the obstacles, and possibly progress in the sport if they are interested. Stockett, Williams, and Klein enjoy being able to inspire and motivate people of all ages to challenge themselves and strive to attain a certain goal. “You can really impact people, especially children,” Stockett said. “I used to be a gymnastics coach for eight and a half years, so kids are my favorite type of people. I get to be a positive influence, especially for little girls. They can look up to me and see that I’m strong, I’m keeping up with

the guys, and it’s really cool for me to be that for them.” The Alpha Warrior program is a new way for Airmen to challenge themselves, build resiliency, and stay fit. The three Alpha Warrior professionals enjoy bringing the program to service members across the world who have dedicated their lives to serving their country. “I’d like to thank everyone at Ramstein for having us,” Stockett said. “We’re all incredibly honored to be here and give back, trying to bring a fun event to you guys. We just want to thank you for having us.” For more information about Alpha Warrior and the Air Force program, visit www.MyAirForceLife.com. Hilltop Hail: Dr. Tina Dang Aldana, TBI Optometrist Story and photo by Thomas Panker Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Office Dr. Tina Dang Aldana has always considered herself a ‘teacher at heart,’ and her positon as traumatic brain injury optometrist at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center utilizes that skill set with every patient she treats. This passion was also fueled by the loss of her brother-in-law who was the first and only optometrist killed in action while serving with the U.S. armed forces. Her background includes degrees in Education and a Doctor of Optometry, combined with training in ocular disease and neuro-optometry, which led to pursuing specialized care for TBI patients. TBI Vision Rehabilitation is largely connected to education. Dang Aldana teaches patients about neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself throughout life, to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment. Not only does she treat wounded warriors from downrange and service members with concussion injuries in garrison, she also provides care to family members and civilians, including children and teens with sports-related injuries. The need for Dang Aldana’s specialty is great, as 95 percent of concussion patients experience visual consequences. Some very common symptoms SOCCER, from Page 1

in England and getting the opportunity to travel Germany to play soccer are all opportunities I wouldn’t have been able to experience without the Air Force,” said McNell, whose extensive soccer resume includes participating in the Military World Games held through the International Military Sports Council. “It’s really amazing and I come back from these soccer trips feeling refreshed and humbled to know I represented the United States in the best way I could.” Playing in the AIRCOM Soccer Championship provides Airmen an avenue to pursue sports while serving and keeps them motivated. Additionally, participation in this prestigious event is important to the mission by giving representation for the USA and USAFE on an international scale. “Having the opportunity to represent AIRCOM and USAFE is a true honor,” said Lt. Col. Derrick Weyand, the USAFE men’s and women’s head coach. “Not only do we get to strive

related to post trauma vision syndrome include blurry vision, double vision, difficulty reading and concentrating, dizziness, poor balance, light sensitivity and headaches. Without treatment, these symptoms can often interfere with work and activities of daily living. Prior to Dang Aldana joining the LRMC team, there was no TBI optomfor excellence in everything we do, but we’re being put on a pedestal to represent our country. So, not only do we represent our country off the field, but we also get to do it on the soccer field.” The two USAFE soccer teams will find tough competition this year at the championship competition with matchups against the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the Royal Air Force team, and last year’s reigning AIRCOM Soccer champions, Poland. This year, the teams’ are optimistic. “I think practice is going very well for both the men’s and women’s team,” said Weyand. “I feel very confident with the men’s team going to the championship round for the simple fact that we have a lot of returning players. The teams’ athleticism is truly second to none.” The players feel just as confident as their head coach in their upcoming performance. “This year, we know each other better than ever,” said Moore. “We’re going to do the best we can and I feel very confident in how we will perform on game day.”

etry role defined or filled at LRMC. Today, the integral benefits of her work are clear, and with every patient whose condition improves comes healing on a broader scale and more measurable medicine. Today’s science demands providers like Dang Aldana to forge new treatment paths to best care for our brave service

members who sustain head injuries. “Working in the TBI clinic here at LRMC is my dream job where combining neurology, rehabilitation, and other specialty care truly makes a difference,” Dang Aldana proudly noted. “The toptier medical services at LRMC enable us to take a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with a talented group of case managers, occupational therapists, pysical therapists, psychologists and a neurologist to help patients get better faster and more comprehensively.” As a recognized leader in her field, Dang Aldana recently hosted the chief of optometry from Vicenza who came to Landstuhl to learn more about TBI optometry processes in order to provide the same level of care after patients leave LRMC. Dang Aldana is also an in-demand speaker at medical conferences and currently a principal investigator on a joint publishing effort, but still finds time to pursue her other teaching passion – yoga. In both environments, Dang Aldana is healing bodies and minds with the same degree of commitment, care and precision. It is important for patients to be aware of the symptoms of concussion and let their medical providers know about their history. A specific and specialized eye exam is required to diagnose and manage TBI vision problems. Providers and patients with questions related to TBI, optometry, or vision rehab may call the LRMC TBI Clinic at 90-5601 or 06371-9464-5601.

What is ‘healthy aging’ to you?

Airman 1st Class Yuyi Jiang, 86th Dental Squadron dental assistant technician, laughs during a photo shoot Sept. 13 on Ramstein. Being a dental assistant has helped further Jiang’s understanding of healthy aging by emphasizing the importance of oral hygiene. “I think healthy aging is where you do the best you can for yourself — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Eating nutritious foods and exercising help our bodies function properly, therefore, aging healthily. It’s very important that we think and learn about healthy aging, because like Albert Einstein once said, the moment we stop learning, is the moment we start dying.”

Tech. Sgt. Christopher LaFaurie, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Service Center noncommissioned officer in charge, pictured in front of unit artwork Sept. 15 on Ramstein says a healthy balance between work life and personal life is essential to healthy aging. “I think healthy aging is finding a good balance between your stressors, whether it be from work or your daily life. Find a way to mitigate and relieve those stressors. No matter what age you are, it’s important to manage everything you enjoy and whatever is important to you very well. If you don’t think about it or understand yourself well enough to take care of yourself, then you are going to fail.”

Maj. Christopher Underwood, 86th Airlift Wing Chapel branch chief, seated in the Northside Chapel Sept. 13 on Ramstein, says that spirituality and religion offer a variety of benefits as people age. “I believe that healthy aging is the integration of spirituality and religion into all other aspects of life; physical, mental, and social. They can foster positive relationship opportunities, community, a sense of belonging, and can also contribute to long-term healthy mental and physical health. Additionally, they also assist in an individual’s search for meaning and purpose in life, as well as the challenges of mortality.”

Tech. Sgt. Russell Linden, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron general purpose heavy shop section chief, believes healthy aging is about the quality of the life he lives. “To me, healthy aging is just about being aware of our body. It’s promoting a better quality of life for ourselves, and trying to attain maximum effectiveness and staying fit to fight. I think the goal for healthy aging is so we can live happier and longer lives.”

Airman 1st Class Ryan Williams, 86th Medical Operations Squadron mental health technician, sits on a mental health counselor’s couch Sept. 14 on Ramstein. Williams believes the key to healthy aging is to train herself to continue learning new things. “When you’re young, it’s easier for you to learn things. It becomes harder as you get older, but the best thing to do about it is to train your brain to continue learning things. It helps your brain stay young. My mom is one of those people, she calls herself the “Renaissance Woman” because she tries so many different things. She does archery, she writes; right now, she’s painting and she’s never painted before. I could never imagine her mind getting old, and it influences me to be better.”

Active Duty, Army Reserve medical personnel collaborate to increase medical readiness

Story and photo by Capt. Kaitlyn Heacock 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs Army Reserve Soldiers from the Medical Support Unit – Europe collaborated with active army personnel to use the medical clinic on Kleber Kaserne Sept. 15 to 16 to facilitate Periodic Health Assessments and dental screenings for reservists during battle assembly. The MSU-led medical and dental readiness event that supported Army Reserve Soldiers helped increase medical readiness throughout the 7th Mission Support Command, but also strengthened an ongoing relationship with the clinic and the active Army. The MSU provided all medical supplies and patient administrators for the event, and almost all the health care providers. Two active duty dentists supported the event on both days. Sgt. Melinda Splane, noncommissioned officer in charge of the event, said the experience of working with the active component to organize the event in their facility was a beneficial experience “It was a positive experience with very good communication,” she said. For example, while the MSU brought all their own supplies, if they ran out, the clinic leadership agreed to

ensure they could finish the event using the clinic’s supplies, she added. The event was efficient and the interaction with MSU hosts was good, said Staff Sgt. Paul Trimakas, one of the Soldiers who underwent his PHA at the clinic. “We are extremely pleased with the event, and that we were able to partner with our active component partners to ensure success of the event,” said Maj. Jonathan Etienne, 7th MSC Office of the Command Surgeon Medical Operations Officer. Many of the Soldiers come from outside of Germany and the event gave them the opportunity to complete their medical readiness requirements in a limited time. During the weekend, 70 Soldiers completed their yearly PHAs and 58 completed their annual dental examinations. The event helped ensure that reserve Soldiers have the opportunity to complete their required physical exams during a Battle Assembly weekend, so as not to interfere with their weekday civilian employment requirements, Etienne said. A voucher system in which Army Reserve Soldiers can complete their PHAs with civilian doctors and dentists is used in the continental United States, however, the number of civilian health care providers is limited in overseas locations.

Ingredients

(for 4 people) 1 cup finely diced bacon 2 medium onions, finely diced 1 ¼ pounds Hokkaido pumpkin 1 ¼ cups liquid cream ½ cup milk 4 medium eggs Salt and ground white pepper for seasoning 1 tablespoon dried marjoram 1 tablespoon oregano 1 ½ pounds spaghetti, uncooked 2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ teaspoon lemon/lime juice

Remove seeds from pumpkin. Cut the pumpkin meat into ½ inch by ½ pieces. Boil the spaghetti to al dente stage. Mix cream with milk and eggs. Season with salt and ground white pepper. Add marjoram and oregano. Heat a pan to medium heat with olive oil. Add bacon and let it cook until slightly crispy then add onions and pumpkin. Cook a further 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Strain spaghetti, then add to pan with bacon, onion and pumpkin. Stir well. Remove from stove and add egg cream mixture and mix. Add the lemon. The egg will cook from the residual heat of the pan and the other hot items. The noodles will soak up all the liquid. Keep stirring until all liquid is absorbed. Carbonara is an Italian pasta dish. Italians have been making Carbonara for over 200 years. We added the pumpkin to add the flavor of the season. A great wine for this dish is a Sancere from France. If you prefer Italian wine a Pino Grigio or Lugana white wine would be nice. A German Riesling would also be great.

Germans observe unification day by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Germany will observe Unification Day Tuesday as a legal holiday in all German states; stores, banks and official institutions will be closed. The former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) were officially

reunited Oct. 3, 1990. The process of reunification started in 1989. During September and October of that year, East Germans demonstrated for democratic reforms and the right to travel to Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Schwerin and other towns. Chief of State, Erich Honecker was dismissed from his top position Oct. 18 and the new political office announced the opening of the borders to the Federal Republic of Germany and the border gates along the Berlin wall the night of Nov. 9, 1989. Over the next three days, more than 3 million East Germans crossed the border into West Germany just to celebrate, sightsee and purchase goods, which they were not able to obtain in the east. The wall, a symbol of the Cold War for 28 years, was torn down during the following weeks and months, and pieces were sold as souvenirs. East Germany’s first free elections in 40 years were held March 18, 1990, and citizens elected a new government. Basic changes concerning the country’s economy, currency, social laws and jurisdiction were established by state contracts May 18 and Aug. 31. Finally, Oct. 3, 1990, the

German Democratic Republic ceased to exist. After 40 years it vanished from the world political map. The celebrations in Berlin the night of Oct. 2, included a giant fireworks display, hundreds of thousands of people dancing in the streets drinking champagne, and the raising of the national flag on the former East German parliament building. Berlin was chosen as the new capital city of unified Germany. This year, official celebrations will take place in Mainz, the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz. Various musical and dance performances can be seen on several stages in Mainz Tuesday and Wednesday. Visitors will be able to explore all 16 states of Germany and taste their culinary specialties.

Neustadt/German Wine Street will celebrate its annual German Wine Harvest Fest through Oct. 9. The German Wine Harvest Fest is considered the vintners’ Thanksgiving. For more than 50 years, regional vintners celebrate the event after finishing their work in the vineyards and wine cellars for that season. They now welcome the new season with new wines. The traditional wine village made of little framework houses called “Haiselscher,” set up in front of the train station, opened a week ago. A typical season specialty offered is “Zwiebelkuchen,” onion cake. It is similar to Quiche Lorraine and customarily served with “Federweisser,” the first new wine for that year. “Federweisser” has a cloudy color and tastes more like grape juice than wine, containing less alcohol. It is still fermenting and after a few weeks loses its sweetness. Today, the carnival with rides and vendors will start and the crowning of the German Wine Queen will take place. Local stores will open for special shopping 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Local car dealers will present their latest vehicles in the center of town. Neustadt’s Hetzelplatz will turn into a giant wine tasting location today to Oct. 9. Visitors can sample wines from the nine wine villages belonging to Neustadt, the other 13 wine-growing regions in Germany and from partner regions in Eruope in a mirror palace and a Mediterranean garden. Highlight of the wine harvest fest will be Germany’s biggest vintners’ parade with more than 100 floats, bands, walking groups, costume groups and the Palatinate and German wine queens at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8. City officials expect more than 100,00 visitors. The fest will close out with a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Oct. 9. For more information, visit www.neustadt.eu.

Fire Emergency Services support Fire Prevention Week Courtesy of KMC Fire Emergency Services KMC Fire Emergency Services will kick off Fire Prevention Week with a parade through Ramstein Military Family Housing at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 7. Immediately following the parade they will continue with a variety of festivities at the Fire Department Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 1, Bldg. 2303, on the Ramstein flightline. There will be free food, live fire and vehicle extrication demonstrations, fire truck displays from KMC FES and surrounding local fire departments, activities for children, door prizes and more. This year’s Fire Prevention Week will run Oct. 8 through 14. For more than 90 years, the National Fire Protection Association has sponsored this week across the nation and overseas military installations. Every year they promote education and critical importance and this year’s campaign will be “Every Second Counts, Plan 2 Ways Out!” Get prepared for a fire by following these simple steps:

• Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit. • Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year. Conduct at least one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out. • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. • Make sure the house number on your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

A new initiative called “Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz!” provides information on resources available to U.S. service members. “In an effort to support U.S. families and help them prosper as members of their German community, the initiative set up this one-stop website on which all the communities can display their local information in English to U.S. families,” said John Constance, Atlantic Academy project manager. “The website is meant to connect the dots of already available resources.” The Ministry of Interior, RheinlandPfalz, laid the groundwork of the initiative in 2014. In May 2016, the Facebook page was established, and in June of this year the website became available to visitors. The website comprises four sections: project communities, guide, volunteer opportunities, and German-American institutions. The project communities section provides local information about recreational activities, local events and points of interest as well as local businesses, public services, contact information for the town halls, the recycling system, and internet connections in the community. The guide features general informa-

tion on life in Germany, the German mentality, and what American families who are new to Germany need to be aware of when arriving in RheinlandPfalz. The volunteer opportunities section gives interested individuals information on giving back to their community. The section labeled institutions provides references to to organizations in Rheinland-Pfalz and the specific services they provide to U.S. service members and their families. “The local resources are provided by the local representatives themselves who know their village best and can list accurately the full range of offers in their community,” Constance said. “The state initiative helps the communities with placing the information on the page and translating the information into English if needed.” One service member who recently retired from the military, along with his wife, used the website to seek out community volunteer opportunities.

A new initiative called “Welcome to RheinlandPfalz!” provides information on what resources are available to U.S. service members.

“I recently retired from the Army and my wife is German. She works at one of the local schools and we have lived in the local area several years and thought we could help to provide useful information and continue helping the communities we have been very proud to be a part of,” said William Pfannenstiel, U.S. Army Staff Sgt., retired. Pfannenstiel also appreciated how simple and user-friendly the website is. “I was impressed by the helpfulness of the website,” said Pfannenstiel. “Often when a service member arrives they have many questions. Previously, to answer those questions a person would have to go on different websites for information about schools, community, or services offered on base. The Atlantic academy has built a directory and built a relationship with local communities to get information from their areas. They are trying to acquaint and integrate the service members and their families with the German and especially the Pfälzisch way of life.” This enterprise aspires to expand the initiative to include more opportunities. “We’re constantly trying to get the word out to the military community about this program and the helpful resources we offer,” Constance said. “Another intention is to incorporate more communities close to military installations into the program to expand

the spectrum of local opportunities displayed on the website for U.S. families living in Rheinland-Pfalz. A positive feedback by the military will support the adoption of the project resources in new communities leading to an all-encompassing representation of local offers.” Every month “Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz!” holds a GermanAmerican stammtisch. Stammtisch is a German word that means a regular get together. “In April, we hosted an art exhibit with the Overseas Art Education Association and displayed artwork of local [military] students at the town hall in Kaiserslautern,” Constance said. “We also held a luncheon on entrepreneurship in July, which provided information about starting and running a business for Americans to open their own business in Germany. In addition, we constantly support our project communities, enabling them to host events for Americans they otherwise would not have been able to.” “I want to thank the U.S. Armed Forces for the fruitful cooperation on all levels, which is a distinct sign for the very positive German-American relations we are experiencing here in Rheinland-Pfalz,” Constance said. The competition started at 5 a.m. with six culinary specialists ranging from junior non-commissioned officers to private first class competing in a series of events designed to test their physical fitness through a physical fitness test, Army knowledge through a military board, and their culinary expertise during a “mystery basket” cook-off. “There was a lot the Soldier had to do to get ready for today’s competition” sand Sgt. 1st Class David Burch, competition judge. “Not only did they have to study regular board questions that any other Soldier studies, but they had to study Military Operations Specialty specific questions for foodservice related items.” The highlight of the day for many Soldiers, was the “mystery basket” cook-off. Participants were given the opportunity to show off their creative side of culinary arts when they were presented a basket with surprise ingredients and asked to create a meal to feed three people. “This portion of the competition is really a challenge for the Soldiers because we’re used to working in the dining halls where we normally are preparing meals in large quantities,” said Staff Sgt. Shaniece Stokes, who helped sponsor the competition. Participants were judged on aroma, plate presentation, taste, texture, and uniqueness. “I’m looking forward to the cooking portion of the contest,” said Pfc. KarlJoseph Tuang, a first-year competitor. “I feel it will challenge my ability as a culinary specialist.” Sgt. Aaron Warren from the Baumholder dining facility and Pfc.
