hen an injured military working dog handler regains consciousness from a blast or other incident downrange, the ﬁrst thing they ask is, “How is my dog?” A Soldier recently injured in Afghanistan asked that same question in the intensive care unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

When the patient’s nurse told him JaJo (pronounced “zsa-zso”) was being treated for injuries at a nearby military veterinary clinic, but was doing ﬁne, she said a tear of relief rolled down his cheek. Only one day after surgery, JaJo, with a bandaged foot and shrapnel wounds visible across his body, was allowed to visit his handler and friend — an infantry Soldier recovering from the same incident. The Soldier’s name is being withheld for patient privacy reasons. Although JaJo had half of his

Priority five: Eliminate non-value added activities by William P. Stewart 86th Airlift Wing vice director

Commentary

Editor’s note: This is the last article in a series highlighting the priorities of the 86th Airlift Wing. Over the past four weeks, you’ve read about our wing’s strategic plan — our mission, vision and five priorities. The last of our wing’s priorities is to “eliminate non-value added activities in our major processes.” This is perhaps the most difficult priority to execute as the measure of merit isn’t necessarily the elimination of non-value added activity from your perspective, but from the customer’s perspective. The real challenge is to accurately define the real customer. Since I was a youngster (right after the Earth cooled and dinosaurs still roamed our planet, according to my kids), I’ve loved auto racing of almost every kind. Auto racing is truly a team sport; from the engineers and mechanics at the home garage, to the suppliers of parts and equipment, to the crew chief and pit crew at the track and ultimately to the driver, everyone has a hand in either victory or defeat. It’s a sport where tenths of seconds are considered an eternity and team speed, accuracy, efficiency and effectiveness are prized commodities. Auto racing teams must get the biggest performance bang for every dollar spent (their budget), must proudly represent the sponsors whose names/product trademarks are emblazoned on every visible panel of the vehicle (their customer), and must ensure their fans — in the stands or on TV/radio — see their sport and their individual teams as “heroes.” The difference between a championship-winning team and an “also ran” team may come down to just a few championship points spread across an entire season.

Identify major processes Units below the wing level can identify their major processes and work relative improvements without disrupting those of another group or squadron. Our wing will continue to support and encourage those types of improvements at every level. The real challenge is identifying, as a wing, our major processes and determining where we will get the biggest return on our investment of time, manpower and talent. So, what is a “major process” at the wing-level? While we may not have the perfect answer, the 86th Airlift Wing leadership defined these processes as those that, 1) must be done correctly for the mission to succeed; 2) are resource “rich” in terms of dollars and manpower; 3) cut across several 86th AW organizations; 4) are critical inspection items; and 5) received major inspection write-ups previously. As we move forward with our strategic planning, the 86th AW’s senior leaders will nominate major pro-

Now what? According to Chuck Parke, executive director of the University of Tennessee’s School of Business Excellence, successful organizations don’t always “create” a better process. Instead, they leverage the best practices of organizations with similar processes to establish a baseline for improvement and “tweak” it to match their needs. This means that when we conduct an event, we’ll have a guide as to what works, what doesn’t and what the return on investment could be. The key to our long-term success will be the less glamorous follow-through with improvements and taking the administrative steps to standardize work processes. See PRIORITY, next page

Flu vaccine available in KMC Flu vaccine has arrived in the KMC, and Army and Air Force medical officials have developed plans for all service members and civilians to receive their vaccination. The available vaccines include the intranasal FluMist for beneficiaries between the ages of 2 and 49, and Afluria, the more traditional flu shot. Afluria is for those ages 9 and up, those older than 49, and those for whom FluMist is not recommended, such as pregnant women or people with asthma, active wheezing or other long-term medical conditions. Clinics will have Fluzone available for children 6 months through 9 years old for whom FluMist or Afluria are not recommended, such as those children who are immune compromised, have a severe allergic reaction to a FluMist component, are on concomitant aspirin therapy or have had Guillain-Barre syndrome, asthma, or recurrent or active wheezing. For many, annual vaccination is a requirement and not a recommendation. This includes all military service members, most health care workers, school age children, as well as child care facility employees and attendees. A robust schedule of planned mass flu drives will be made available for local communities at locations listed below. Beneficiaries are encouraged to attend one of the mass flu drives, which are pro-

vided as a convenience, and wait times should be shorter. A documentation card will be provided to beneficiaries receiving their immunization at locations other than a military treatment facility. Medical officials ask beneficiaries to keep their documentation card until their information has been downloaded into their electronic medical records. Students of Ramstein elementary, middle and high school and child development centers should visit the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center for vaccination. All KMC clinics will have flu vaccine available once the mass flu drive campaign begins. Be sure to check vaccine availability and clinic hours before visiting any of the KMC clinics. The flu season in Europe routinely continues through April with the greatest number of cases occurring in January, according to U.S. Army Public Health Command-Europe. Institutionalize Holding AFSO21 events is meaningless if no one knows the outcome and the results are forgotten. We will highlight our process reviews and our successes at the local, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, and AF levels. Additionally, we will establish a library of best practices and share them with the goal of having our recommended process become the AF process codified in the applicable AF Instructions or Time Compliance Technical Orders. We will also enhance our recognition program that showcases Airmen involved in our successes.

Finally, we will implement a process to periodically revisit our updated processes to ensure we have the continued, desired effects. Just like an auto racing team, our wing team must look at our processes and ensure we’ve made them easily understood by all involved — effective, efficient, standardized and repeatable. In the end, combat operations are exactly like an auto race — finishing second really just means you were the first of many losers. Teams who invest the time and effort into developing and maintaining the processes, procedures and attitude of winners find themselves on championship-winning teams — those who don’t must wait until next time!

Throughout the week a special guest went around to different squadrons to tell his story and talk to Airmen about their service. “It’s important to remember those who gave that huge sacrifice for our country,” said Tech. Sgt. Bradley Johnson, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron special communications team leader. Following the run was a luncheon at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. Retired Capt. Guy Gruters, who was a POW for five years during the Vietnam War, was the guest speaker. “When my plane went down I managed to evade for 45 minutes,” Gruters said. “It was getting dark and I could hear a lot of yelling, just hoping that they wouldn’t find me and waiting for it to get dark. Once it got dark, I thought to myself, ‘I could possibly stand a chance.’ But they found me just as the sun was about to disappear.”

He immediately explained the living conditions he had to endure as a POW. “We were given one blanket, no shoes or socks and two pairs of pajamas for the whole five years,” he said. “We were shivering for days and weeks at a time during the winter months.” The food they were given while in captivity was limited as well. “Two loaves of bread and two liters of water was all we got for the day,” he said. “After about a year and a half I finally got over the hunger pains.” Gruters explained what the summer and winter months brought and described what interrogations were like. “During one of my last interrogations one of my interrogators asked me if I was mad at my country because they had left me here for five years,” Gruters said. “I told him, ‘No,’ because even if I am here for 20 years, I will be going back to America. I still have the possibility of getting home to my family.” At the end of the day there was a wreath laying ceremony before retreat. “We remember POWs and MIAs

‘I am Air Force Energy’ Network access made easy, secure with new campaign kicks off

ctober is Energy Action Month, and it provides an opportunity to promote energy and water conservation awareness as part of a national campaign led by the Department of Energy. This year’s theme, “I am Air Force Energy,” puts the Airman at the center of the campaign. The goal is to inspire the total force to make a commitment to a continual change in organizational and personal energy use and help Airmen realize they can make a difference in overall Air Force energy efforts. Beginning in October, the Air Force will highlight energy success stories from around the Air Force enterprise in videos, fact sheets and articles distributed via the Air Force website, Facebook and YouTube. Your KMC Asset Optimization Team is working within the KMC to bring the message to the local area, providing tips, encouraging you to look for opportunities in your home and workplace, and highlighting your successes. “Every Airman is charged to ‘make energy a consideration in all we do,’ and through active awareness and training programs we enforce that charge,” said Maj. Gen. Timothy Byers, the Air Force civil engineer. “We must take the lead in energy conservation, renewable energy utilization and energy security as the Air Force seeks to save energy, reduce costs and keep our country insulated from the volatility energy engenders.” All the data is not in yet, but the Air Force estimates it spent more than $10 billion on energy in fiscal year 2012, almost 10 percent of its total budget. Our local share of that budget in electric and heating energy has historically been in excess of $4 million per month. Any savings we can realize could be better spent on our Airmen, our readiness and our mission. Achieving each of these goals set by the Air Force — improving resiliency, reducing demand, assuring supply and fostering an energy aware culture — involves the hard work and innovation of Airmen. In the last year, we have seen some impressive success stories. From energy recovery efforts at Misawa Air Base, Japan, following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami efforts to reduce facility energy demand through projects ensuring the sustainability of our installations, a number of Airmen have gone above and beyond to have a real impact. Posturing to meet half of its domestic fuel requirements with alternative fuel blends by 2016, the Air Force has certified all aircraft on a 50/50 blend of JP-8 and synthetic fuel and 80 percent of its aircraft on a 50/50 blend of JP-8 and biofuel. The Air Force is implementing energy awareness training and education for Airmen, civilians and contractors during basic training, officer training, technical school and more. There is also an online outreach module available to all Air Force personnel with a Common Access Card on the Advanced Distance Learning System. It provides energy tips specific to various job functions. The KMC AF Asset Optimization Team has noticed an overall decrease in energy and water consumption within the KMC, but there is always room to improve. While the team continues to strive to identify viable savings projects, we all have a part to play in accomplishing our reduction goals. Simple changes, when executed across the KMC, can have far reaching impacts. Some ideas include consolidating appliances within your facility, remembering to log out and turn off your computer screen at the end of the day, adjusting radiators to a reasonable setting, and using daylight when possible. Don’t turn a blind eye to problems know the name of your facility manager and report incorrect temperature settings, leaky faucets, blocked air vents, cracked door frames or windows, outdoor lights on during the daytime, and other problems to your facility manager or to Civil Engineer Customer Service. These are easy steps that can yield positive environmental and financial results for our community and the Air Force. Keep an eye out throughout October for more energy conservation tips and events. SIPRNet hardware token by Master Sgt. Dennis Palmer 86th Communications Squadron The new Department of Defense mandated SIPRNet hardware token is available and will simplify the login process into SIPRNet computers. The purpose of the SIPRNet hardware token is to replace the traditionally used username and password combination with a more secure user-specific personal identification number like the Common Access Card. Once the process is implemented early next year, the SIPRNet hardware token will be the only way to gain access to the network. While the token card itself is unclassified, it should be protected with the

same care as your CAC. The 86th Communications Squadron’s Wing Information Assurance Office has already started issuing token cards to Ramstein customers. In coordination with each unit’s IAO, the wing IA office is scheduling units a dedicated timeframe for priority service to receive the cards. It is very important that units take advantage of their scheduled time as card issuance is limited to about 70 per day. Units are currently scheduled through the end of the year and any unit missing their scheduled time may experience extended delays. Dorm managers are responsible for the upkeep of 16 buildings and making sure all rooms are up to standard for incoming Airmen. The dorm office is now accepting applications for new dorm managers until the positions are filled. Being a dorm manager is a two-year commitment. The office is looking for responsible and respectable E-5s and E-6s who have completed seven-level training. Applicants must provide copies of their last three enlisted performance reports, a current fitness score sheet and a SURF and have a minimum fitness score of 80 percent. Air Force network migrations come to Ramstein

amstein will soon become the ﬁnal U.S. Air Forces in Europe base to migrate its computer users into a central Air Force network. Over a 10-week period beginning Nov. 12, technicians will begin migrating Ramstein workstations, network users and email into the AFNet. The goal of this project is to collapse all individual or stand-alone Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard networks into the AFNet. During the migration, some Ramstein users may experience network or email access interruptions, but for the majority, user impact will be minimal. Although software and hardware problems are to be expected, the AFNet migration project represents a major change to how computer networks are managed and is one of the most complex Department of Defense technology initiatives ever attempted. “One of the major difﬁculties in the C4/cyber business is we are operating the future as we build it,” said Lt. Col. John P. Zapata, 86th Communications Squadron commander. “Fortunately, we have planned this effort well to maximize existing technological capabilities that will allow us to gain greater control, standardization, and improve security for the Air Force network enterprise.”

Until now, MAJCOMs and various other Air Force organizations have been operating their own independent networks, consequently driving unique and unit specific requirements. Over the years, this “county option” approach led to standardization and security problems, high operation and maintenance costs, and a lack of enterprise situational awareness. In short, there was no single organization or commander responsible for the network. The AFNet migration project addresses these issues and places Air Force cyber operations under the operational control of a single commander. This approach will yield a significant improvement in the Air Force’s ability to fight daily virus activity and malicious intrusion attempts. Additionally, AFNet migration will centralize services like email and data storage, significantly improving network security and standardization. Finally, operational and training costs will be reduced through the elimination of redundant systems and services. How will this affect you? The most visible change will be in the format of your email address. The migration formally replaces the old first.last@ ramstein.af.mil email address with a standard first.last@us.af.mil address. Regardless of the base or organiza-

tion assigned, this new address will remain with users for the duration of their career, employment or affiliation with the Air Force. As more bases join the AFNet, Airmen will be able to log into their accounts from any AFNet base without requesting and creating an additional account, allowing easy access to the network during deployments and throughout TDY or PCS moves. Sites such as the Air Force Portal, Air Force Personnel Center and Defense Finance Accounting Service will also remain easily accessible regardless of duty location. The migration will also result in a “consolidated” customer service help desk called the Enterprise Service Desk and is designed to serve as a one-stop shop for the resolution of common user problems. Recently, the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base became the first USAFE base to migrate into the AFNet. This migration has been viewed as a success by leaders at the base- and MAJCOM-level. “The Spangdahlem comm squadron poured countless hours into premigration efforts to make their migration a success, but the real benefit came from the participation of the end users,” said HQ USAFE/A6 migration lead, Capt. Aaron Lake. “If you take an active role in your own piece of the migration by reading the mes-

sages and following the instructions, you will likely have a seamless transition. When in doubt, ask questions or open a ticket to get the right attention on your speciﬁc issue — don’t suffer in silence.” Up to this point it has been a lot of hard work by communications personnel behind the scenes at base communications squadrons and HQ USAFE/ A6 to ready the command for migration into the AFNet. More than two years of preparation, 1,500 man hours and $10 million in hardware installations have led to a smooth transition for the ﬁrst USAFE base to migrate into the AFNet. As Ramstein approaches its projected start date, a team of Air Force Network Integration Center, 690th Network Support Group and 86th CS technicians are busy preparing equipment and resources to facilitate the migration of 14,000 plus users. “Our focus moving forward is educating our users,” said Chad Willette, 86th CS Plans and Resources Flight. “Providing information in the form of handouts, emails, base paper articles, and radio or television public service announcements is the key. A personal story about suicide by Maj. Kelli Hooke 409th Contracting Support Brigade

he last day of school of my freshman year in high school, I woke up to the phone ringing. It was very early and I heard my mom’s voice talking to the person on the other end. “No, he’s not here. He should be there already. I’ll go check the roads and see if his car broke down and get back with you. Thank you,” my mom said. She then came back to my room and explained that Dad didn’t make it to work so she was going to go drive his route and find him. She needed me to be up by the phone in case he called and then to get everyone ready for school if she was not back in time. So, I did just that. Mom did not get back in time, so we all got on the bus that morning unsure of where Dad was. The day was only half over when a voice on the intercom announced that my sisters and I needed to report to the school administrative office. My grandmother was there and was taking all of us home. It was the last day of school, so we really weren’t missing anything, but I was still worried. Long story short: My dad had attempted suicide, and his young family was left reeling. I was 15, and my sisters were 13 and 11. He was the primary provider for our family. As we dealt

with the aftermath of this serious and very public event, we also had to deal with all sorts of financial, social and emotional issues. My dad was hospitalized for a week, and it was a while before he could work again. He was placed on medication and started attending a lot of counseling. Through the treatment, he slowly began to recover. It took a long time for him to look at the events and realize he had made a poor decision. As he started to get a handle on the past and his emotions, he began to realize there were all sorts of ways he could have received help if he only had asked. It was very hard being a teenager dealing with all of the pain and distress of a suicidal dad. But through these circumstances I was able to learn

important lessons. I learned that I am responsible for my mental health. Specifically, I needed to pay attention to it and do things to keep me strong. In the Army today, we call it being resilient. Second, I learned to have more compassion for others. We do not know the extent of the burdens others are carrying, and it is important to be there for people so they know that we can help. Finally, I learned there is no real shame in asking for help. It is far worse to cause tragedy to your family instead of seeking professional assistance. And there is a lot of help available. Today, my dad is doing great. After receiving extensive treatment, he was not only able to address past issues, but learn coping skills for future challenges. His example shows that no matter how bad things get, there is a path to a better way. Needless to say, whenever I attend training on suicide prevention, I take it seriously. However, I have been hesitant to share my experiences. It is one thing to attend training, listen attentively and then resume normal life. It is a wholly different thing to actually tell people that your dad attempted suicide. Even as I volunteered to help this year, the thought went through my mind: “What if they think my dad is crazy?” And, “What if they think I might go crazy, too?” Too many people have died this year alone for me to be silent and to allow my perception of a stigma keep me from speaking up. I hope that by sharing this personal information about my past, those Soldiers who are struggling will gain the strength to ask for help. Please do not wait until life is so overwhelming that death seems like the only answer. Your death will not solve any problems. It will just cause more. And your life can get better. No matter how desperate your circumstances are, someone wants to help.

rankfurt’s Gateway Reception Center, located in the Frankfurt International Airport, will officially close Sunday. The closure is the final step in a process that began in February to migrate Army PCS incoming travelers to the Ramstein Gateway Reception Center located in the Ramstein Air Base Passenger Terminal. Since February, the bulk of Army PCS travelers to Germany have been diverted to Ramstein, after reinstatement of the Patriot Express flights as the primary method of official travel for Soldiers being assigned to U.S. Army Europe units. The Patriot Express is Department of Defense chartered air travel that originates at Baltimore/Washington International Airport in Maryland. “The obvious impact is there will no longer be a Soldier presence at the Frankfurt airport, other than individual sponsors, “ said Maj. Patrick Niestzche, 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 1st Human Resources Sustainment Center. “The closure of the FGRC means that all Soldiers arriving to USAREUR will be processed through the RGRC. If they arrive into Frankfurt

airport, the responsibility to take care of their transition will belong to their new unit and sponsor.” The sponsorship bus service will also stop in conjunction with the FGRC closure, and there will no longer be transportation to outlying communities after Sunday, Niestzche said. “Soldiers and their families traveling on leave would often use the sponsorship bus on a space-available basis,” he said. Should Soldiers arrive at the Frankfurt airport, they may seek assistance at the United Service Organizations, located in Hall C of Terminal 2. The USO has telephones and computers for use to make contact with sponsors or their unit of assignment. The FGRC was once the reception and staging point for all Soldiers and their family members entering the European theater on permanent-change-of-station orders. At the height of the FGRC’s existence, the 22-person staff daily monitored 40 flights originating from the United States with 12 buses shuttling Soldiers and family members to 11 different communities throughout Germany. ThroughA hero’s Airmen’s Eyes story comes to life

by 2nd Lt. Kay Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs apt. Jason Powell received a copy of the book “Into the Mouth of the Cat” from his father when he was 13 years old. He didn’t know it then, but the story of Capt. Lance P. Sijan and his fellow prisoners of war in Vietnam would shape his future and eventually lead him to meeting one of the very men responsible for bringing Sijan’s story to light. Every year, POW/MIA week is a somber, dedicated remembrance vigil for prisoners of war and service members who are missing in action. Throughout his military career, Powell participated in multiple POW/MIA week tributes, but none have compared to his experience at the event hosted by the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing here, Sept. 21. “When I heard it was Capt. Gruters coming, my first thought was, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. There’s no way that’s the same guy,’” said Powell, an aircraft maintenance officer by trade who is currently working as the 435th Contingency Response Group’s operations officer. Powell found that it was indeed the same man and volunteered to be an escort for the event. Capt. Guy Gruters, a “Misty Fast-FAC,” or forward air controller, was flying with Maj. Bob Craner in an F-100 Super Sabre when they were shot down in December 1967. They endured the brutal life of a POW for five years in the company of men like Navy Rear Adm. James Stockdale, Navy Capt. John McCain and Air Force Col. George “Bud” Day. During their time in captivity, he and Craner were made responsible for the care of Sijan through his final days. After their release in March 1973, Craner’s recommendation and Gruter’s testimony were the basis for the award of the Congressional Medal of Honor to Sijan. Gruters also worked closely with Malcolm McConnell on his book, “Into the Mouth of the Cat.” Powell carried his first-edition copy of the book under his arm while he escorted the veteran POW and his wife. “We talked a couple times about the fact that

had he not done what he did, (Sijan’s) story would not have been told,” Powell said. “I thanked (the Gruters) a couple times for doing what they did because my life would’ve been totally different had I never read this book.” Powell recollected the impact the story of Sijan had on him. “I was a pretty big geek when I was a kid. There was one speciﬁc passage in there which talks about Sijan when he was at the academy. During a basic cadet training ruck march, he stood up for a bunch of smaller, weaker cadets when an upperclassman was hazing them pretty good,” he said. “He forcefully and physically stood up for them. As a 13 year old who got picked on a lot, I

instantly identified with him because no one had really ever done that for me and at that point, I decided, ‘I’m going to do that for somebody else.’” The story inspired Powell to become an officer in the U.S. Air Force. Having read the book several times over, Powell gained a new perspective on the story when Gruters spoke at the POW/MIA luncheon. “The fact that he was there with his wife was a big deal,” Powell said. “He would again and again credit his wife and the other military wives for being responsible for getting him through the five years in a torturous prison camp, and then the fact that they actually got the torture to stop and ultimately got them out.” It was Sandy Gruters and the other wives and families of Vietnam POWs who rallied and focused political pressure for the Vietnamese to improve their treatment of prisoners and eventually to release them altogether. Presented to a sincere crowd of Airmen from Team Ramstein, a silent eight millimeter film depicted Gruters’ reunion with his family after his release. Powell was touched by the image of the young captain greeting his little brother and two young daughters, reminding him very much of his own family. “Seeing that visual representation of being separated from your family for half a decade — it was amazing,” Powell said. “It brought home the sacrifice, knowing that his daughters were 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 years old when he was shot down — the same age as my two daughters are now — and then seeing his re-connection with them five years later at 6 and 7. I think that’s why that video is so poignant and so powerful to everybody. It was a way to demonstrate this is why your family is the most important support structure you have.” Powell attended a wreath laying ceremony with Gruters and his wife to honor both past and current POW/MIA members. “My connection to Captain Gruters and the book itself, it put a human touch on it that I hadn’t had before,” said Powell after the ceremony. “The impact of actually meeting somebody that was there with the guy that I credit for my military career, or at least the start of it, it changed the way I will think of POW/MIA for the rest of my life.”

The exercise culminated in a 96-hour simulated event, where “deployed” British and German medics cleared the battlefield of casualties to a U.S. combat support hospital staffed by U.S., British and German personnel. “It’s very important to train together so that when something happens — such as now, when an ambulance appears — everything runs smoothly,” said British army 2nd Lt. Graeme Hogg, 2nd Medical Regiment troop commander. “And in the next deployment, wherever that may be, we’ve got things worked out so there are no problems going in.” The exercise combined multinational health care with preparation for contingency and programmed operations in the fictional landlocked, poor and divided country of Curi, but can be anywhere in the world, said 1st Lt. Brian Thorson, the S4 for 212th CSH. “The current operations that most U.S. units find themselves in is presently in Afghanistan. We’re transitioning from an Army at war to an Army that is preparing for contingency oper-

Kaiserslautern American ations,” Thorson said. “Essentially, what that means for us is we need to be ready to prepare at any time, at any place, anywhere.” Careful consideration was made by planners to make the scenarios as realistic as possible, down to troops living and working out of tents, eating Meals, Ready to Eat, and having no communication with the outside world, Thorson added. “These are all things that add to realism to training for future scenarios,” Thorson said. The realism of the environment — combined with the injuries sustained by victims, who ranged from Bays’ IED blast to a British army private who presented with a large nail through her hand - made medical personnel unsure of when the next rush would be, or what it would entail. “(At this point) I’ve treated IEDs, heart attacks, nausea, vomiting, broken legs and children, as well as military working dogs, which are treated as if they were Soldiers,” said Capt. Nathan Beckerman, 212th CSH emergency physician. Each patient was cared for as though the situation were real, but the available IVs, tourniquets and X-rays

were not used due to safety reasons, Beckerman added. With the exception of the animals and children, in which mannequins were used, all cases involved actors hired by Trauma FX, a company from North Yorkshire, England, that specializes in casualty situation makeup, amputee effects and more. Managing Director Linzi Foxcroft said she often recruits injured combat veterans as actors, including Bays and Ruben Carvil, a Glendora, Calif., native and veteran of the U.S. Air Force, who has resided in England since 2007. With fellow artist Joanna Parvin, the two use realistic props, makeup and large amounts of fake blood to make the wounds appear as they really would right after occurring. “It’s a lot of fun. And what’s really satisfying is when people who’ve done tours come over and say, ‘You know what? I worked with you last year, and it really helped me through the tour, and I had to actually treat somebody.’ That’s probably the most satisfying part of the whole job,” Carvil said. The actors stayed in character from the moment they were transported

from the Trauma FX building in the ambulance to the time they were released, or when the mission was ended, whichever came first. In some cases, that meant the patients spent a few days in the mobile CSH “recovering.” The CSH was a maze of tents hooked together to make rooms and hallways. Like most permanent hospitals, it included an intensive care unit, ICU wards, operating space, a pharmacy, lab, laundry and more, said Capt. Patrick Kadilak, officer in charge of the emergency medical technician section, 212th CSH. The CSH could be configured into a 44-bed, 84-bed or 284-bed hospital, but was made into an 84-bed hospital for the exercise. Thorson said the hospital can be completely set up in a matter of days, which is in line with the 212th’s goal of deploying all personnel within 96 hours of being alerted. “Whatever mission we receive in the future, with whoever we’re paired together, we know how to work through those issues now,” he said. “This is what we’re training for — to become more and more independent.”

36 years of service to the KMC by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs After 36 years, German employee Frank Klemm is ready to retire. We sat down and asked him a few questions. Q: How many different things have you done in your 36 years? I started in 1976 as a chief desk clerk in lodging. In 1983, I started to have my own maintenance team, which I built up and served as the team supervisor. In the 1990s, there were more building renovations and building projects and I got more involved with the designing and planning. In 1992, I started as the lodging facility coordinator to represent lodging in all major renovation and construction projects in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. This meant I was involved in the design process from the start of the design until the ﬁnal turn-over of the projects. Q: Looking back, what is your favorite memory over the last 36 years? After all these years, pointing out only one particular memory is not possible. But, I suppose every time a project was completed and the guest, as well as our staff, enjoyed the new/

upgraded appearance of a facility represents a memory. Q: During your tenure working here, did you set goals for yourself? If so, how did you accomplish them? JaJo’s treatment in Afghanistan included a chest tube, catheter and other medical treatment for penetrating shrapnel wounds. “The medics who worked on him did a fabulous job — high speed. They treated him as well as any human Soldier,” Cook said.

The effort to treat military working dogs continues in Germany where Cook and her staff put in long hours caring for K-9s seriously injured downrange. Being able to experience the reunion helps put the hard work and effort into perspective. “It’s rewarding because you could tell he recognized JaJo,” Cook said. “If he only remembers just a little bit of this in the future, it was all worthwhile.”

Ramstein Army detachment helps prepare Polish soldiers Story and photo by Maj. Tom Campbell 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment KIELCE, Poland — A tense mood filled the commander of Task Force White Eagle’s office as Afghan army, police and civilian leaders arrived to discuss security in Ghazni province. They felt poorly treated upon entering and let Maj. Gen. Andrzej Tuz’s know. Apparently, an Afghan woman was also searched by a male soldier — a cause for outrage. “We came here to discuss security in my province,” an Afghan governor told the general. “But I was treated like a common criminal” Fortunately, in this scenario, the Polish troops were simply undergoing training. And the Afghans were not Afghans. They were, in fact, Soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 19th Battlefield Coordination Detachment out of Ramstein. The weeklong exercise, known as Bagram XII, wrapped up in late

August. The U.S. Army Europe event certiﬁes Polish Land Forces for deployment, said Maj. Adam Wloczewski, of 2nd Mechanized Corps Headquarters. About 150 ofﬁcers and NCOs with the Polish 12th Mechanized Brigade, 25th Brigade of Air Cavalry and Military Gendarmerie took part. Roughly 45 U.S. military and civilian participants worked alongside their Polish counterparts. Soon, Polish land forces will deploy to Afghanistan in support of the International Security Assistance Force. During their upcoming sixmonth rotation, Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers will be embedded within the brigade as a Bilateral Embedded Support Team. The BEST Soldiers will assist the task force with operations, logistics and communication, Wloczewski said. The 19th BCD’s support made a substantial difference to the training. Brig. Gen. Johnny R. New CTO ticketing policy

eginning Monday, any travel authorization that includes air travel must be approved and ticketed at least 72 hours in advance of the scheduled flight departure to avoid airline reservations from being canceled. This new policy applies to domestic City Pair and non-contract government flights that are either booked through DTS or through a commercial travel office. Travelers making travel plans at least 72 hours before departure must have their authorization approved and tickets issued within 24 hours of creation to avoid cancellation. If making plans within 24 hours of departure, authorizations must be approved and ticketed at least six hours prior to flight departure time to avoid cancellation. If your airline reservations are canceled, the commercial travel office should notify the member by email or phone. If your airline reservations are canceled, you should follow your normal ticketing process to re-book the flight. If you arrive at the airport to find your reservations canceled, do not re-book at the airline counter. Often, counter agents are not familiar with the U.S. General Services Administration City Pair Program and may book you on a full priced fare at a much higher cost. Remember to take a travel itinerary with you to the airport. Your itinerary will provide contact information for your commercial travel office, as well as reservation details to help you re-book. Monitoring the status of your travel documents and ensuring your travel authorizations are approved is the best way to avoid unnecessary costs and stress associated with re-booking travel. hen Joanne Brunson arrived at Ramstein with her husband, the late Col. James Ellis Brunson, in 1973, she was not quite sure what she was going to do in Germany. Nearly 40 years later, her impact on the Ramstein community’s budding musicians is evident. Since 2001, Brunson has taught piano lessons for the 86th Force Support Squadron Ramstein Community Center. Originally from Printon, Ky., Brunson has been playing the piano since she was 8 years old. She said her mother, who always wanted to play the piano herself, lived vicariously through her. “She gave me horrible alternatives,” Brunson said. “Like, did I want to do the dishes or practice? I would practice and she would stay in the kitchen a solid hour. I knew if I got up, I would have to wash those greasy skillets they have in the South!” At just 16 years old, Brunson started playing at her church. Shortly thereafter, she

started teaching. Since then, Brunson has accomplished what many would consider daunting tasks. She has spent three summers in France and one summer in Italy for a master piano class, playing different organs and working with different international instructors. Brunson is proud to have played a Bösendorfer Factory piano for a show house in Vienna, Austria. The only song she thought to play was Rachmaninoff’s Prelude to C-sharp minor, which she played repeatedly at the crowd’s insistence. “It was the most exciting thing I have ever done,” she said. Brunson is clearly passionate about her music and her work. Her advice to up and coming musicians is to make sure you enjoy playing, you practice hard and you never stop learning. Brunson said she still learns something new each week. Brunson teaches 30-minute lessons to 50 students every week, from 4-year-olds up to adults, at the Ramstein Community Center. Debbie Lockhart U.S. Air Forces Africa Public Affairs WATERKLOOF AFB, South Africa — More than 130 U.S. military members were invited to demonstrate the air and ground capabilities of American forces as they partnered with the South African air force during the 2012 Africa Aerospace and Defense Exposition here, Sept. 22 and 23. “This was a tremendous opportunity for the U.S. military to come work with our South African partners, demonstrate some of our capabilities, observe theirs and strengthen the relationship between our countries,” said Col. Robert Huston, mission commander for U.S. participation in the Africa Aerospace and Defense Exposition. The South African and U.S. air forces have a long-lasting relationship that was highlighted by the partnership and cooperation between the nations during the event. “The American military, being able to see our aircraft here, was worthwhile because the U.S. invests time and money into our pilots’ training,” said Lt. Col. Gerry J. Engelbrecht, 28th Squadron C-130BZ pilot and instructor. “When you watch our pilots ﬂy, it is easy to see that the investment is being put to good use.” The South African government also recognized this investment in their country and arranged for U.S. service members to participate in the Youth Development Program, which aims to inspire a new generation of aviators. According to event coordinators, 3,000 children participated in the YDP over the weekend, and more than 100,000 visitors attended the event, which ﬁlled seven hangars with displays of more than 90

The U.S. military static displays included an Air National Guard C-17 Globemaster III from the 137th Airlift Squadron at Stewart Air National Guard base in Newburgh, N.Y.; a KC- 135T Stratotanker from the 171st Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mount Clemens, Mich.; and a C-130J Super Hercules from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Cherry Point, N.C. Ground vehicles included a M-1117 Armored Security Vehicle from the 442nd Military Police Company in Queens, N.Y.; and a M-1126 Stryker Armored ﬁghter vehicle from B Co., 1st Battalion, 112th Infantry in Cambridge Springs, Pa. “My favorite thing at the show is the Globemaster III because I’ve only seen them ﬂying,” said Cameron, 9. “I’ve never been able to climb in them and I’ve never seen them on the ground.”

The air show offered entertainment for everyone, whether they were young or young at heart. “The show was very enjoyable,” said air show attendee Zinda Ntembeko. “This is the best air show in the area.” The exposition typically takes place every two years, but due to past runway renovations, event coordinators say this is the largest air show in this area within the last ﬁve years. “The crowds loved seeing the bigger aircraft, taking photos with the U.S. military members and listening to the band,” Engelbrecht said. The U.S. Air Forces in Europe band, Touch ‘N Go, performed four shows during the show days as well as three performances in communities across South Africa. “I’m looking forward to the next time the American Air Force comes,” Cameron said.

Taylor 21st TSC Public Affairs SCHWEINFURT, Germany — For the third consecutive year, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosted a 10-day air assault school Sept. 10 on Camp Robertson in Schweinfurt, Germany, that was attended by approximately 260 Soldiers and Airmen from various units throughout Germany. By hosting the course, the 21st TSC paved the way for European assigned service members to become air assault qualified without extensive traveling back to the states. Air assault school qualifies Soldiers to conduct air mobile and air assault helicopter operations, including aircraft orientation, sling-load operations, proper rappelling techniques and fast-rope techniques. Separated into three phases, the training is rigorous and fast-paced. However, students meet their first challenge with an obstacle course before the classroom phase begins. This year’s class lost 39 students after the obstacle course. “The obstacle course challenged me since I don’t like heights, and there are a few obstacles that are very tall,” said Pfc. William X. Ogara, a plumber with the 15th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade. All the training was conducted by air assaultqualified Soldier instructors from the Army National Guard Warrior Training Center in Fort Benning, Ga. During the first phase, the combat assault phase, the service members were introduced to the Army’s rotary wing aircraft, pathfinder hand and arm sig-

» NCOs in unrestricted career fields affected by the fiscal year 2013 NCO Retraining Program have two weeks remaining to volunteer for retraining. NCOs who volunteer during Phase I have more opportunities to choose their next career field than those who wait and see if retraining will be necessary. During Phase I, Airmen in unrestricted career fields may apply for any shortage career fields listed on the retraining advisory, if they meet requirements. Voluntary applications will be accepted only through Oct. 5. During Phase II, the AFPC Total Force Service Center will immediately begin selecting a retraining AFSC from the most qualified and vulnerable Airmen involuntarily, in order to meet the remaining objectives. Encourage those personnel who are still on the Master Vulnerability List, who have not been approved for retraining, to volunteer for a career field(s) that has a retrainingin objective. If they wait, they could be involuntarily retrained into a career field they have no desire to be in. The master vulnerability list is available on the virtual Military Personnel Flight website, accessible via the Air Force Portal or the myPers website. » The Ramstein Chapel is accepting bids for the following contract positions: Liturgical Service Parish Facilitator — provide Parish administrative support to the Liturgical chaplain through coordination of overall program and calendar de-

nals, helicopter landing zones and markings, and aeromedical evacuation operations. The second phase was sling-load operations, in which service members were taught about standard sling-load equipment, sling-load ground crew operations, and how to properly prepare, rig and inspect various pieces of military equipment. The third and ﬁnal phase of air assault training was the rappelling phase where students were instructed how to tie the conventional hip rappel seat in less than 90 seconds, and how to properly hook themselves up to a set of rappel ropes in 15 seconds or less. They also conducted numerous rappels from a 55-foot tower and performed rappels from a UH60 Blackhawk from the altitude of 80 feet. After enduring through the three phases, the service members still weren’t safe from failing the course. On their ﬁnal day prior to graduation, they had to complete a 20-kilometer ruck march in three hours while carrying 45 pounds of gear. “We lose most of our students in phase two during the sling load test,” said Staff Sgt. Ammon S. Blair, an air assault operations NCO. “But we have the most success in phase three during repelling operations, and I believe that is because it is the most fun part of the training.” Of the 260 service members who began with air assault class 308-12, 193 graduated. “It takes a lot from host units to prepare for our course, because there is a lot of equipment that we need in order to conduct the course properly,” Blair said. “Air assault is very vital in today’s current theaters of operations, especially in Afghanistan, where a lot of places you have to utilize helicopter assets,” velopment, information management and publicity. Germans observe legal holiday Wednesday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Germany will observe its Unification Day Wednesday. Every year on Oct. 3, stores, banks and official institutions are closed throughout the country in observance of this legal holiday. What is Unification Day? The former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) were officially reunited Oct. 3, 1990. The process of reunification started in 1989. During September and October of that year, East Germans demonstrated for democratic reforms and the right to travel to Dresden, Leipzig, Halle, Schwerin and other towns. Chief of State Erich Honecker was dismissed from his top position on Oct. 18, and the new political office announced the opening of the borders to the Federal Republic of Germany and the border gates along the Berlin Wall the night of Nov. 9, 1989. Over the next three days, more than 3 million East Germans crossed the border into West Germany just to celebrate, sightsee and purchase goods, which they were not able to obtain in the east. The wall, a symbol of the Cold War for 28 years, was torn down during the following weeks and months, and pieces were sold as souvenirs. East Germany’s first free elections in 40 years were held March 18, 1990, and citizens elected a new government. Basic changes concerning the country’s economy, currency, social laws and jurisdiction were established by state contracts on May 18 and Aug. 31. Finally, on Oct. 3, 1990, the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist. After 40 years, it vanished

or the 16th year, the RheinlandPfalz Agricultural Chamber of Kaiserslautern and the City of Ramstein-Miesenbach will sponsor their annual farmers market Sunday, a day when Germans celebrate their Thanksgiving. The market will feature more than 30 farmers and vendors presenting their products, an animal show, a historical tractor display, demonstrations, and musical entertainment from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stores will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. The farmers market will ofﬁcially open at 10:30 a.m. in the Haus des Bürgers. A festive Thanksgiving worship service will follow, supported by the Children’s and Youth Choir of Ramstein-Miesenbach, the Hunting Horn Blowers from Kusel, and the choir AIBaSoTe Oldies from the Kusel Music School. “The farmers market is a steady item in our local calendar of events,”

said Stefan Layes from the City of Ramstein-Miesenbach. “It is known throughout the Pfalz and even lures visitors from other areas. They know they get good homemade products here.”

The listing of fresh products for sale and to eat on the spot includes beef, lamb and pork meat; meat from game; potato dishes; ﬁsh specialties; bratwurst; frikadellen; chicken; dairy products, such as yoghurt, cheese and butter; honey products, including honey, honey wine and honey liquor; wurst; eggs; pasta; and baked goods. Visitors will also have a choice of schnaps, liquors and wine. Other items, such as arts and crafts, garden ceramics, wooden household tools, toys, knitted products and decoration items, will complete the wide range of products vendors will offer. Nutrition advisers will pass out information and give tips about the right snack during breaks in kindergarten and school in the foyer of the town hall. The agricultural chamber will present the various grains growing in the ﬁelds. Brave visitors can put their hands into touching boxes to feel the different grains without seeing them. A sheep shearer will demonstrate

how to shear sheep, and a spinner will show them what to do with the wool. Visitors can watch a basket weaver making various sizes of baskets, a potter creating his items and a lace maker presenting her skills. The wooden stove baker is looking forward to helping children make bread in the children’s bakery. Children can also enjoy pony riding, face painting and a petting zoo. Old tractors will be lined up on Miesenbacher Strasse. “We also offer a farmers quiz, where participants can win ﬁne prizes,” Layes said. Proceeds from the quiz will be donated to the Youth Red Cross and a local kindergarten. “We hope the weather will be good and a lot of visitors come to our farmers market, which is our second biggest market after Wendelinusmarket, scheduled for Oct. 27 and 28,” Layes said. The center of town will be closed to motorized trafﬁc from 2 p.m. Saturday to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Kingfish notch another win O

n Sept. 22, the Kaiserslautern Kingfish swim team hosted the Wiesbaden Wahoos, Heidelberg Sea Lions, Lakenheath Barracudas, Eifel Sharks and the Hohenfels Hurricanes in a six-way matchup at the Ramstein Aquatic Center. Once again, the Kingfish came away with the victory, posting 1,420 points in their third straight victory of the season. “Never give in,” said head coach Bob Clinton. And the Kingfish swimmers took that advice to heart. Lexie Meints, 16, swam headto-head against Lauren Brashear of Wiesbaden in the 100-meter breastroke and squeaked out the victory by

a 0.01 second margin, shaving .90 off her personal best time in the process. Danielle Davis, 13, and Everett Plocek, 16, set new team records in the 200-meter breastroke, hitting the wall at 3:09.94 and 2:42.16, respectively. Other races occurred in the 800meter time trials held after the meet. The time trials are held to allow swimmers to qualify for the European Forces Swim League Long Distance Championships, to be held in November in Antwerp, Belgium. Davis and Rachel Plescha, 16, competed nose to nose in their heat, pushing each other to time drops of 23.57
