Ready to lead the fight: 2019 AF Ball kicks off tomorrow by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 72nd Annual Air Force Ball is scheduled to be held tomorrow starting at 5 p.m. in Building 2018 also known as the Dual Bay Hangar. U.S. Air Force Maj. Maria Vazquez, Air Force Ball committee president, said the ball has been in the works since November 2018. The theme for this year’s ball is “Operation Varsity” with the slogan, “Ready to Lead the Fight.” The theme ties in with the upcoming Operation Varsity 19-3 exercise scheduled for Sept. 23-27, and parallels with World War II Operation Varsity, which took place over Germany in 1945.
“Celebrating the tradition and heritage of the Air Force is very important, because knowing where we came from helps us see where we’re going,” said Vazquez.

Vazquez said continuing the tradition and educating on the past is especially important for new Airmen. This year the AF Ball e-invite was sent out to the base populace in mid-

August. All service members and civilians with base access were invited to attend. Ticket prices ranged from 30-70 dollars depending on an individual’s rank or civilian grade. 86 AW leadership talks resiliency, upcoming exercise, preparation for future by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Leadership of the 86th Airlift Wing hosted their 3rd all-call of 2019 on Sept. 17 at the Southside Fitness Center, where they discussed resilience, upcoming exercises, and preparation for inspections in February 2020. “As good as we are, and as proud as we are with the mission that we accomplish every single day, we need to continue this discussion on connectedness, resilience and a focus on you, the Airmen,” said Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We’re going to see some challenges here for the future, and we really need to highlight for all of you what the next six months is really going to look like because we are approaching inspection season here at the wing.”
August and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW command chief, highlighted the efforts of the 86th AW during the Resiliency Tactical Pause on Aug. 30, and expressed the continued need to pause at least twice a year. “We have a unique opportunity to demonstrate our warfighting skills across nearly every [Air Force Specialty Code] that the Air Force has to offer,” said August. August emphasized that Ramstein is more than the mission; it is a team and a family. Rendon recognized the importance of considering different perspectives and generations in the Air Force, noting that many young Airmen weren’t even born when he first enlisted. “We’ve got our youngest Airmen who we most worry about,” said Rendon. “Somewhere around the [early 20s], and what you’re dealing
with is unlike what we’ve experienced as Airmen.” Rendon said Ramstein is making efforts to extend assignments for firstterm Airmen and strengthen connectedness and resiliency through their community action team. He also said the 86th AW is planning to utilize their 2019 Commander in Chief ’s Installation Excellence Award earnings effectively, with improvements such as the Southside Fitness Center scheduled to be open 24 hours by winter 2019 and public Wi-Fi for customer service agencies. Rendon and August discussed new and future challenges in the 86th AW as far as changes in testing requirements for enlisted and officer ranks, efforts to get the 2020 budget approved, and the upcoming Unit Effectiveness Inspection in February 2020. “We’re going to set the bar so high that no one else is going to be able to
clear it,” said August. “But the challenge that we’re going to see upfront is we’ve still got to get through the compliance piece.” August also discussed Operation Varsity 19-03, scheduled for Sept. 23-27. “Starting next week, you’re going to see us kick into full gear,” said August. “What it means to be ready, what it means to be lethal, and what it means to be resilient.” August ended the all-call by communicating 86th AW’s goals to continue being highly effective and focused on Airmen. “We look forward to leading the team as we go through the next six months of constant inspections and preparations, but at the end of the day it’s going to come down to you,” said August. “It’s going to come down to the leaders in a room, and the Chief and I couldn’t be more proud.”

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Spencer Koepp, a C-130 aircraft maintenance craftsman with the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week, Sept. 12. In August, Koepp led a 10-member maintenance team in support of Carpathian Fall, a two-week long flying training deployment in Otopeni, Romania. His team was responsible for launching and recovering three 86th Airlift Wing C-130J aircraft at a foreign military airport, with minimal aerospace ground equipment and support tools. Koepp’s leadership and dedication to effective maintenance enabled the 37th Airlift Squadron to fly 35 sorties, transport 60.2 tons of cargo, and perform 28 container delivery system drops over the course of the deployment. Col. Matthew S. Husemann, 86th AW vice commander, lauded Koepp for his work ethic in Romania. “The write up that we got was just immense, on every-
thing that [Koepp] did to take care of and launch aircraft,” said Husemann. “Not just for us, but to make sure that we’re taking care of the Romanians. That professional airlift... [Koepp] delivered it down there, each and every day.” The 86th AW command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto J. Rendon, accompanied the vice commander to offer his congratulations to Koepp. “What you represent is all about being good at your job, and then going above and beyond that,” Rendon said, to Koepp. “We can talk about leadership and all the other stuff that the Air Force expects of us as Airmen, but none of that matters if we don’t have good, qualified 7-level technicians that know how to do a job, and know how to bring up Airmen that come after you.” Tech. Sgt. Cannady 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing Public Affairs Two members from the 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, were recently selected for the Air Force women’s and men’s softball teams. Master Sgt. Latonya Thomas and Staff Sgt. Christopher Stephenson were recruited after participating in 10 days of tryouts; a pool from which only the top one percent were chosen. The two went on to compete and win against each branch of service in the Armed Forces Softball Tournament for their respective teams from Aug. 12-18 at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. Thomas has been in the Air Force for 16 years, spending her first seven years as a personnelist, prior to retraining into intelligence. A gym staff member, who knew about the Air Force Softball program, encouraged her to
apply after watching her play. Thomas played for the Air Force Women’s Softball Team during the Armed Forces Softball Tournament and in the World Softball League-Military, Women’s World Championship, where they finished in first place. “There’s no greater feeling than when every team is lined up on the field during the opening ceremony, the Air Force song is playing and you realize that you are one of 15 men or women chosen to represent the entire Air Force in the Armed Forces Tournament,” said Thomas. “This is an opportunity that not many people know about or get to do, so I feel incredibly blessed that my leadership allowed me to participate.” Stephenson has been in the Air Force for eight years, and was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, before moving to Ramstein. He enjoys spending time playing softball, reading, and playing video games when not traveling. He played for the Air Forces Men’s

This is particularly true for dependent spouses that want to continue working for their stateside employer. While Germany allows dependent spouses to work, such employment is not protected by the NATO Status of Forces Agreement and, therefore, is subject to German rules. Luckily, there is an agreement between Germany and the U.S. on social security. Based on it, your U.S.
employer may apply online for a Certificate of Coverage with the U.S. Social Security Administration at https://www.ssa.gov/international/ CoC_link.html. It will allow you to be kept under the U.S. social security system. However, when it comes to income taxation, the situation is much more complex. If you are present in Germany for more than 183 days and perform telework in Germany, you will generally be subject to German income taxation, even if your employer is American and is located in the U.S. An excep-

Softball Team, and was selected for the All-Tournament Men’s Team, which recognizes the 10 best players from all participating Armed Forces Teams. “Once I found out I was selected, I was relieved and extremely excited to represent,” said Stephenson. “It has honestly been the highlight of my career, so far.” Air Force softball team coaches select players not solely on talent, but on character as well. In doing so, they ensure players mesh well and can work together to overcome any situation. According to players, being part of the Air Force team taught them a lot of skills they will bring back to their work centers. For Thomas, this was exhibited during the championship game of the Armed Forces tournament against the Army. The Air Force team was down four runs in the last inning with two outs, but never gave up and ended up scoring five runs to win the tournament. “One of the main lessons I brought tion exists if your stateside employer is a governmental agency. This can be applied to any circumstance, whether that be PT, promotions testing… you name it.” For Stephenson, who is a coach for the Ramstein Base Softball Team, this gave him an opportunity to lead by example and maintain a positive outlook. “My goal is to let those guys see that I’m putting in the work to be the most consistent and reliable person in any situation,” added Stephenson. “If they see me putting in the work to do the little things, they will want to do the same. If we are all working hard to do that, it makes the team that much better.” Thomas and Stephenson continue to be ambassadors for the Air Force both at work and on the field. the income generated by the teleworking in Germany. Finally, in order to file taxes, you will have to pay a German tax consultant because all paperwork and software will be in German.

Airmen train using counter-knife tactics

It’s a cool September morning and five men sweat as they train to potentially save their lives. They are members of the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron’s Emergency
Services Team. In the civilian world, they’d be known by a different name — Special Weapons and Tactics. SWAT. They gathered on Kapaun Air Station, Sept. 4, to work on how to counter an attacker wielding a knife. “The reason we’re taking the knife training so serious is statistically there’s been an uptick on edge-weapon incidents in the area of respon-
sibility,” said 1st Lt. Stephen Cromp, 569th USFPS operations officer and EST leader. “There’s been some fatal stabbings … Some even got international attention like the situation in Strasbourg.” Cromp, a third degree black belt in Krav Maga, conducted this training session with the mindset that his Airmen may never need it, but should they, they’ll be glad they did.
“The main concern in this situation is the lethal weapon,” Cromp told the Airmen. “So that should be your primary focus. Something that’s gone wrong in prior drills is that everyone focuses on striking technique and the knife will come up.” Cromp and Rene Richter, 569th USFPS unit training manager for local nationals, taught several techniques to
block a weapon, distract an aggressor, and immobilize the suspect. “Obviously in this situation we’re law enforcement professionals,” Cromp said. “Once we’ve subdued the subject and we’ve grabbed the knife, that’s our primary concern.” The group practiced a mix of Air Force combatives, common law enforcement takedowns, Krav Maga, and mixed martial arts on each other during the training. The mock suspects utilized training devices called “shock knives,” blunt-edge weapons featuring a battery powered electrical blade which delivered a small shock when pressed against skin. The knives gave Airmen a shock, instead of a stab, letting them know they’d been hit. “The YouTube or Jason Bourne clips aren’t real,” Cromp told the trainees. “You’re going to get cut, but if you get [cut] up on the back of your lat – whatever - you’re going to walk away from that. But if you get [cut] up on your jugular, you’re probably not going to walk away from that.” The EST trained for approximately an hour-anda-half before shutting it down for the day. They’ll train again, practicing and staying proficient at their craft.

Army doctors in Germany amplify health care to troops in Africa Story & photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, may be over 8,000 klicks (kilometers) away, but following a recent Virtual Health Europe site visit to the U.S. Navy Expeditionary Medical Facility, Service Members in Northern Africa can now connect to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center with a click of a button. The visit linked the EMF with medical providers at LRMC enhancing the EMF’s capabilities and virtually deploying LRMC physicians to Service Members throughout the Horn of Africa. With the implementation of virtual health, leaders aim to decrease the number of medical evacuations to LRMC while increasing access to care. “The ultimate goal of bringing virtual health to EMF Djibouti is to support the combatant commands who reside on Camp Lemonnier,” said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jason Johnson, director of surgical services at EMF Djibouti. “Ultimately we want to better preserve the fighting force by leveraging all available means, virtual health being one that we have yet to tap in to here.” The implementation of virtual health at the EMF will decrease Service Members’ time spent away from their units and mission, and expedite the return to duty of those who have to be medically evacuated to LRMC. “Virtual Health Europe brings providers to that point of need; we’re moving information, not moving patients,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Robert Cornfeld, Virtual Health Medical Director, LRMC. Over 300 providers from LRMC, spanning 42 medical specialties, are available not only to support forward-deployed and remote medical teams in the operational environment, but also Military Treatment Facilities across three continents. According to Cornfeld, the all-in approach saved an estimated 14,000 mission days in 2018 alone, allowing Service Members to remain at their duty location rather than travel for healthcare. Over the last two years, 11,500 virtual health visits took place, connecting military medical facilities at 79 operational sites and 56 stationary medical facilities across three continents. Although it is an Armyfunded program, more than half of the servicing health facilities are operated by other military branches. LRMC is the largest American medical center outside the United States and the only American College of Surgeons verified Level III Trauma Center overseas.
health was established, with 99 visits performed by nine different specialties from LRMC and Naval Hospital Sigonella over the last four months. “Our role in military medicine is to keep the Service Member in the fight,” said Cornfeld. “Virtual Health brings the [medical center] to the warfighter.” Overseas military medical treatment facilities and operations are categorized by service capabilities. EMF Djibouti is a Role 2 medical facility, indicating its ability to provide advanced trauma management and continuing resuscitation efforts at the point of injury. LRMC, a Role 4 medical center, serves as the strategic evacuation site for U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Central Command, U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. European Command. Role 4 facilities provide definitive care for patients requiring longer treatment or complex specialty care such as surgery, reconstruction or rehabilitation. “The Horn of Africa is in a strategic location for U.S. Forces. The down side is that it is quite a distance away from any Role 4 facility,” said Johnson. “The EMF is the only Role 2 facility on the continent with computerized tomography scan capability. Patient movement is always a logistical challenge, whether downrange to us, or from us to our Role 4 at LRMC. The ability to have virtual health consultations helps ensure we are providing the best and most appropriate local care while maintaining our fighting force.” The next steps for EMF Djibouti
and Virtual Health Europe are to establish connections between the EMF and Service Members in austere environments, saving thousands in logistical costs and hours lost. “The biggest impact that virtual health has on the warfighter is keeping them at their job for the longest period of time, and only [pulling] them away if a face-to-face appointment with the specialist is needed,” said Johnson. “When [a] face-to-face in-person consultation is required, the provider-patient relationship already exists, streamlining their care and minimizing time away from the fight.” “After establishing ourselves [at] garrison [locations], for the last two years we have focused on operational virtual health,” said Cornfeld, a pediatric gastroenterologist by trade. “We go to Role 1 and 2 levels of care, and bring the power of more than 40 specialties at LRMC to the joint warfighter.” The Military Health System is currently developing enterprise solutions for videoconferencing, store-andforward imaging, streaming media, remote patient monitoring, and terrestrial and wireless communications. In Europe, although the technology behind the virtual exam room doesn’t differ much from common video-conferencing applications, virtual health isn’t as simple as plug and play, with medics requiring thorough training to take on the role as the hands, eyes and ears of the attending physician behind the screen. “(Virtual Health) will decrease disposition time in soldiers coming to
LRMC; we are now able to streamline their labs,” said Dr. Mark Marilley, the first physician to utilize the technology from LRMC with a patient at EMF Djibouti. “Patients can get their data cooking now before the doctors even perform procedures. [And they] can also walk in to the clinic the next morning and immediately schedule procedures without having to be worked into our schedules. It’s a positive impact for sure.” Although virtual medicine is drastically changing opportunities in health care delivery, Cornfeld says the greatest challenge is that final mile of connectivity. “The goal is not only about pointing Djibouti Service Members to LRMC, but connecting forward-deployed teams toward their own organic medical providers,” said Cornfeld. Europe’s platform, which utilizes web-based connectivity, makes it easy to connect with doctors around the area of operations, allowing Service Members and their family members to even visit their physician while at home. This ability increases continuity of care and decreases potential for health risks. “I was a flight nurse in the Air Force and this goes against all my training because I used to (conduct aeromedical evacuations), that was my job,” said Judith Parow, Virtual Health Nurse Director. “(Virtual medicine) keeps the warfighter working with their units, because most of these (Service Members) don’t want to come back and be away from their team. If somebody needs surgery then, yes, you’ll have to come (to a medical facility). But with virtual medicine, at least they can look at the patient and provide a diagnosis. It actually saves the patients’ time and the component commanders’ mission, because they don’t have to send someone up here from Italy for five days when it’s a 15-minute appointment.” “We’re just starting to really figure the promise of virtual health for our nine million beneficiaries and Service Members in forward remote areas,” said Cornfeld. LRMC is the largest American medical center outside the U.S., the only American College of Surgeons verified Level III Trauma Center overseas and is the hub for six community based primary care clinics throughout Germany, Italy, and Belgium. The LRMC health system serves over 205,000 beneficiaries, including military Service Members, Department of Defense civilians, military retirees and family members.

TBI conference targets assessments, capabilities on frontlines by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center For centuries, head injuries have been a consequence of war and violence, sometimes leading to unexplained physical and behavioral changes in patients. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Traumatic Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Clinic hosted medical professionals during a three-day TBI Champion Training Conference at Ramstein Air Base, to standardize TBI clinical care by sharing knowledge, current recommendations and best practices. According to the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, a TBI is a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Severity is determined at the time of the injury and may be classified as mild, moderate or severe. Since 2000, more than 380,000 service members have sustained a TBI from various activities ranging from military training and sports activities to combat. “The goal was to bring medical providers, nurses, and medics here and share TBI information with them,” said Casey Becker, DVBIC regional education coordinator at LRMC. “We discussed TBI and why it’s important in the military, the new information coming out about TBI, and acute concussion management so they can take it back to their clinics and share with their colleagues to standardize that TBI care.” The platform also introduced medical professionals to the most recent head injury assessment tool, the Military Acute Concussion Evaluation (MACE 2), a multimodal tool assisting providers in the assessment and diagnosis of concussion. The tool’s effectiveness immediately after the time of injury can help medical professionals determine the severity of the concussion and the steps to take to optimize care, thereby increasing medical readiness for the combatant commands. “Many people [at this conference] would be identified as the first person to see (potential TBI patients) in an emergency room, primary care clinic or urgent care clinic,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Philip Oro, family medicine physician, 86th Medical Group, Ramstein Air Base. “In (medical school) we learn to look at patients and determine sick versus not sick and that seems very black and white. The environment of learning in the last three days gave us what we needed to watch for and disposition patients to a higher level of care if needed.”

Individuals between the ages of 18 to 24 are at the greatest risk for TBI since they are more likely to engage in high-risk activities, a demographic which represents 45 percent of today’s active-duty force. Common symptoms of mild TBIs include headaches, sleep disturbances, dizziness, balance problems, nausea, fatigue, visual disturbances (blurred vision, double vision), light or noise sensitivity, cognitive changes, and emotional changes. The DVBIC research portfolio includes robust studies examining the effects of brain injury and exposure, as well as ways to support individuals in recovery. “We’re trying to make sure that all providers in all branches have an understanding of what to do and the resources available,” said Becker, a native of Clinton, Missouri. “Providers are aware that TBIs and acute concussion are prevalent and even though it isn’t in the news it impacts everyone.” Although combat-related TBIs have been publicized due to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, TBI is not uncommon in non-combat environments and can occur during regular daily activities. The conference included discussions led by TBI experts on acute concussions, mindfulness-based interventions, neuropsychology, management of persistent post-concussive syndromes, sleep disruption, TBI research and future initiatives. Additionally, alternative treatment
options were introduced, such as acupuncture for pain management and the role of occupational therapy in TBI rehabilitation. Attendees embodied all aspects of military medicine, including active-duty service members, civilians, and National Guardsmen, representing Department of Defense medical facilities across
Europe and Western Asia. “Last year we were in a base in eastern Turkey where there was nothing around. To talk to a specialist and get that help (for TBI), I had to call LRMC,” said Oro, a Tucson, Arizona, native. “Now having realized the types of resources out there through the conference, what websites are available, the clinical decision-making tools that are out there, it’s just incredibly helpful to do exactly what’s expected of me as a primary care doctor either in the acute or chronic period going forward.” Oro believes the information gained from the conference will not only help his ability to assess TBI severity, but encourage other medical professionals to utilize these tools to prevent delayed care. “It’s not just about me and my learning, it’s about me going back to others and making sure they are on the same page. The medic can do point-of-care in the field, (diagnosing) takes 10-15 minutes and they’ll get a full (evaluation to) identify if there are red flags and immediately consult a higher level of care or evacuate the patient if needed,” said Oro. “Help and resources are available. The information will help make sure that the military personnel that I care for are more ready, capable and at their best to complete the mission, and if they’re not, to identify it and get them the right care.”

Todman, Parks medalists in Ramstein golf victory by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Ben Todman and Harley Parks were the medalists as Ramstein downed Kaiserslautern and Spangdahlem in a triangular golf match at the Ramstein course on Sept. 13. Todman shot a blistering 32 on the back nine, including an eagle and two birdies. The Royals swept the top three spots in the boys competition. The Royals girls took first and second. Todman and runner up teammate Micah Webb were tied after the front nine, but Todman’s 32 wrapped it up. Matthew Miller was third for
the Royals. The top three finishers for Kaiserslautern were all named Perrin — brothers Matthias, Samuel and Gideon. For the girls, Parks defeat-
ed teammate Audry Kim while Spangdahlem’s Aspen Thomas was third. Kaiserslautern’s top finisher was Anissa Arredondo-Allay in fourth.

The Raiders boys swept singles two through six and all three doubles matches. Freshman Alexander Brunk ran his singles record to 2-0 for the season, capturing his number four singles match against Hohenfels. The number
one doubles team of Olaitan Powdar and Devon Holly won a thrilling and crowd pleasing come from behind match in a championship tiebreaker for the second week in a row to stay unbeaten. He is really golfing well right now.” Scoring is different in high school golf. A player accrues points (four for birdie, three for par, two for bogey and one for double bogie) so the player with the highest score is victorious. Todman’s 48 points was five better than Webb. Parks had 33 to Kim’s 19. Both teams were in action yesterday. Those stats will be available in next week’s issue.

Ramstein girls, boys victorious at Ramstein cross country invitational by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Ramstein’s Connor Mackie made it two weeks in a row as he cruised to the victory in a cross country meet at Seewoog on Sept. 14. The Royals boys finished in eight of the first 11 places. SHAPE’s Sam Dowdell was second. Ben Brewster, Blake Peterson, Gideon Zaug, Jacob Golden and Ezra Letz were third through seventh. Baumholder’s top finisher was Jacob Cruz in 13th place. Mackie ran the five-kilometer trail in 17 minutes and 44 seconds. Ramstein had 17 points to Brussels American School’s 64. SHAPE was third followed by Baumholder. Mackie normally runs a race pace from start to finish but this week he tested a new approach. “I wanted to try a new game plan. Harder for the first lap and then set a race pace,” he said. It worked. He is undefeated so

finishes outpointed SHAPE 33 to 39. Pak’s closing sprint pushed her past three SHAPE runners and secured the victory for the Royals. “I was happy to see the Ramstein runners grouped together in front of me,” Pak said. “They inspired me
to push hard on the last lap.” Baumholder finished third with Madison Brech placing ninth. In Stuttgart, Kaiserslautern’s Griffin Parcells finished at 17 minutes even over the five-kilometer course to win the six-team race. Kaiserslautern’s Ethan Cooper was tenth. Between them were eight Stuttgart runners. The Panthers won the team title with 20 points. The Raiders were runners up with 63. In the girl’s race, Kaiserslautern’s top finisher was Kayla Ballard in eighth place. The winner was, as usual, Stuttgart’s outstanding McKinley Fielding in 18:33. Stuttgart took three of the top four places. Jillian Donmoyer of Kaiserslautern finished in 15th place and Piper Parcells was 19th. Overall, the Raiders finished fourth with 86 points, just nine less than second place Wiesbaden. The Royals and Kaiserslautern will compete in Wiesbaden tomorrow.

Kaiserslautern football falls short against Stuttgart; Ramstein over Lakenheath, Hohenfels over Baumholder by Robert Baldwin contributing writer
Stuttgart’s bruising running backs scored three times in the second half to break open an even game and defeat Kaiserslautern 30-6 at the Kaiserslautern Field on Sept. 13. In the first half, Stuttgart tried to establish a passing game, but a fast and opportunistic Kaiserslautern defense kept them off balance and the Panthers could manage just one touchdown to lead 8-0 at the break. In the second half, Stuttgart changed the game plan and ran the ball to counter Kaiserslautern’s athleticism. Their three back attack and large and experienced offensive line opened the holes for their explosive runners, wearing down the smaller Raiders. Kaiserslautern senior end Tré Dotson had five catches for 82 yards on offense and five tackles on defense, two for loss. Darius Camp had 105 all purpose yards, five tackles and a sack. Junior Celine had 11 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. Shaun Edwards had a 90-yard kickoff return for a late touchdown plus two catches for 45 yards and two rushes for 40 yards. “We wore down with players going both ways, but we kept playing hard until the end,” said Coach Robert Allen. “We are a young team, and while this game didn’t go the way we wanted, the experience will make us better. Our younger players continue to show improvement and their hard work will pay off for them in future games.” The Raiders fall to 1-1 and travel to Vilseck for a contest tomorrow.
Stuttgart is 2-0 and hosts Lakenheath. In the United Kingdom, Ramstein used a stifling defense to down Lakenheath 20-0. Coach Carter Hollenbeck said the defense got stronger as the game progressed and that was the difference in the shutout victory. Hollenbeck also cited kicker Matt Reisman, who had touchbacks on all four of his kickoffs, making Lakenheath start at its own 20 yard line each time. After a scoreless first half, Makani Stenger returned a fumble 85 yards for one Ramstein touchdown, Jason Jones caught a touchdown pass and J.J. Little returned an interception 37 yards for the third score. The Royals are 1-1 heading into their home matchup tonight against Wiesbaden, also 1-1. The game will officially open the new turf stadium at Ramstein. Game time is 7 p.m., preceded by the Junior Varsity match at 4 p.m. Next week the Royals will

Yet the girls kept their composure, handled the adversity, and were able to pull out the win,” said Scalise. Scalise said Makenna Zielske has

Farmers market takes place in Schneckenhausen by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. The North Palatinate Farmers Market will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 29 in Schneckenhausen. Regional farmers and vendors will present items of high quality at about 70 stands. The event also will feature a tractor display and thresher demonstration. The market is known for fresh regional products such as honey, jelly, cheese, fish, bread, pumpkins, liquors and juices. Local hunters will offer anything concerning game and a herbal garden. “We were able to lure numerous French vendors to this year’s market,” said Carola Ibrom from the OtterbachOtterberg tourist office. “They offer delicious cheese, sweet marmalades and finely spiced wurst delicacies.” Vendors will present their merchan-
