US, Romania join forces for Carpathian Fall 2017

maintain joint readiness. The exercise is scheduled to run for approximately two weeks, and involves low-level tactical maneuvers, personnel airdrops and assault landings.

Capt. Jacob Morton, Carpathian Fall 2017 mission commander, expressed his optimism concerning the exercise.

“Carpathian Fall is about building our longstanding relationship with the Romanian Air Force,” he said. “We’ve done this for many years now, it’s some of the best training we’ve had in Europe.

Participants in the exercise come from a variety of career fields including aircraft maintenance, logistics, intelligence, contingency response, medical and U.S. Army paratroopers.

Morton stressed the importance of cooperation between allies, explaining that mission effectiveness increases

September 1, 2017 when one understands how the other works. He expanded on some of the similarities of Romanian and American equipment, particularly their aircraft.

“If we’re not training together, there’s a chance we might show up and not know what everyone else is doing,” Morton said. “The more we fly together, the better we can fight together.”

786th FSS hosts successful Ramstein Half Marathon shift supervisor, crossed the finish line at 1:32:07, earning first for the Woman’s Overall category.

During the half marathon, approximately 84 volunteers assisted as road guards, with the water stations, set up and tear down.

Runners received a T-shirt, bag and a participation medal upon crossing the finish line.

The run started and ended near the South Side Fitness Center, stretching across Perimeter Road, behind the Base Exchange, the 1st Combat Communications Squadron and back.

The next half marathon is scheduled for August next year.

“It was a perfect day for running,” Alysha Brandy, 786th Force Support Squadron fitness program and events manager said. “Everything went really well and really smooth.

The last person that came in

[to cross the finish line], was pretty emotional but she said she had the support of all the runners along the way pushing her through and the staff kind of helped her through the finish line. It was a good morale event.”

Brandy said there were no reported injuries and the event flowed very well.

The winner of the Men’s Overall category and the first person to cross the finish line was U.S. Army Private First Class Job Komboi, Bravo Company supply technician, with a time of 1:21:35.

Workshop for retirees

The 86th Airlift Wing Retirees Activities Office will sponsor a workshop, “What A Surviving Spouse Needs to Know,” 10 a.m.

Open on training holidays

All Army medical and dental clinics throughout Europe are open during U.S. Army Europe Training Holidays to help service members keep up on their medical and dental readiness needs. All eligible beneficiaries can take advantage of this opportunity, including military family members, retirees and their families and federal employees.

Although Army medical and dental facilities will be closed during federal holidays, the Emergency Room at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will remain open for all emergency medical needs.

Ramstein Bazaar coming Sept. 14 to 17

by Rebecca Brokaw Marketing Chair, Ramstein Bazaar and Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein is scheduled to host its 53rd Annual Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sept. 14 to 16, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sept. 17, on the Ramstein flightline.

The event, hosted by the 86th Force Support Squadron in partnership with the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses’ Club, is one of the most anticipated happenings of the year, according to event organizers.

To accommodate a large crowd the event will be held in Hangar 1, Hangar 2, and in a large tent on the flightline.

This four-day shopping event allows more than 130 vendors to display their merchandise to Department of Defense and North Atlantic Treaty Organization ID card holders. An ID card is required for purchasing. The bazaar accepts Visa, Master Card, checks and U.S. dollars for all purchases.

The vendors are the reason customers come out, but the event would not be as successful without its many volunteers.

“The Ramstein Bazaar is the culmination of nine months of planning and hundreds of hours of volunteer work to provide maximal fun and diversity for the shoppers, with the satisfaction

of knowing the proceeds directly support our military community,” said Mary Waibel, 2017 Ramstein Bazaar co-chair.

Volunteers are still needed for the event and can sign up on ramsteinbazaar.org, under the “Ways to Help” tab.

All volunteers must be DOD ID card holders and be at least 16 years old.

Volunteers are eligible for special accommodations during the bazaar to include “Red Carpet Shopping” before the event

opens, according to organizers.

While shopping at the Bazaar is one of the highlights, eating at the Bazaar is a close second. More than 25 private organizations will be serving up food items such as: freshly squeezed lemonade, lumpia, funnel cakes, and much more.

“Last year the Bazaar raised more than $277,000 and 100 percent of that is going back to the

Kaiserslautern Military Community,” said Kim D’Ippolito, 2017 Ramstein Bazaar co-chair. “These funds help many in the KMC to include schools, youth programs, sports, and military organizations.”

The Bazaar staff encourages all eligible parties to come grab a bite to eat, buy a few things and help support the private organizations from all around the KMC community.

Air Force introduces new, improved tool to manage civilian benefits

by Richard Salomon Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — The Air Force is the first agency in the Department of Defense to roll out a new tool that helps government civilians more effectively manage their benefits and entitlement information.

The Government Retirement and Benefits Platform is a web-based application that allows employees to make changes and updates to their HEALTH CARE, from Page 1

remain in Tricare Prime unless they choose to opt out of it.

The DHA is working with the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System office to ensure the transition goes smoothly. Bono asks service members to check DEERS and verify that their information is updated, including any changes in status or added dependents.

“If their DEERS information is completely up-to-date, it will make

health insurance, life insurance, Thrift Savings Plan and other personal benefit information.

The GRB Platform replaces the Employee Benefits Information System, which replaced most paperbased processes in 1996.

“The GRB Platform includes all the functionality previously offered with EBIS, but in a much more intuitive and user-friendly environment,” said Annette Castro, an Air Force Personnel Center human resource specialist. “It gives employees the ability to easily obtain and request various

retirement estimates, complete their retirement packages and review their current benefits coverage.”

The site also contains informational videos, facts sheets, electronic forms, calculators, retirement courses and links to external websites to help individuals make important decisions regarding their benefits.

Employees can access the GRB Platform application through AFPC Secure by selecting the “GRB Platform” application link. Employees should see a brief video explaining the new system the first time they log in.

“This is another example of how we are providing smarter and more efficient personnel services to our customers worldwide,” Castro said.

“It’s important that we continue to improve and enhance all of our business processes, so our customers can have what they need right at their fingertips.”

In addition to this change, the DHA is planning to launch Military Health System Genesis, a new electronic health record system available for continental United States, outside of continental United States, and operational service members.

“Wherever our patients are, they will be able to have access to their health record,” explained Bono. “So they will be able to see what is going on with their care, who they have seen, what the diagnosis is, and what

the treatment plans are.”

According to health.mil, MHS Genesis integrates inpatient and outpatient solutions that will connect medical and dental information across the continuum of care, from point of injury to the military treatment facility.

“I think it will be very helpful for parents to be able to see their kids’ shot records very easily now,” said Bono.

“I think this is also going to help our national health care challenges in figuring out what we need to do to build a system that is responsive and meets our

patients’ needs and helps take care not only of their preventative health issues, but also helps people understand what they can do to make sure that they don’t get complications from different illnesses.”

The DHA directs the execution of ten joint shared services including the health plan (TRICARE), pharmacy, health information technology, research and acquisition, education and training, public health, medical logistics, facility management, budget resource management, and contracting.

Air Force announces initiatives to lessen pilot shortage

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — Air Force officials announced three additional initiatives designed to enhance mission readiness by keeping pilots in the service and bringing retired pilots back to fill critical-rated positions.

The first is an increase in the aviation incentive pay, commonly called flight pay, for both officer and enlisted aviators for the first time since 1999, effective Oct. 1, 2017. The second is an expansion of the fiscal year 2017 Aviation Bonus Program to include non-contracted and contract-expired pilots that began Aug. 4, 2017. The third is the rated return to active duty program which brings retired pilots back into the service to fill critical-rated staff positions that began Aug. 11.

“We need to retain our experienced pilots and these are some examples of how we’re working to do that,” said Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson. “We can’t afford not to compensate our talented aviators at a time when airlines are hiring unprecedented numbers.”

Retaining experience, enhancing readiness

The Air Force was 1,555 pilots short at the end of fiscal 2016, which includes 1,211 total force fighter pilots – with the deficit expected to grow.

To address this, the first initiative is directed at all aviators and provides higher amounts of incentive pay, or flight pay. Aviators will see a reduced number of steps in the Air Force Aviation Incentive Pay table, an increase to a maximum of $1,000 per month and increased pay rates across all steps for officers beginning Oct. 1 (see tables).

Simultaneously, enlisted aircrew members will also see their incentive pay increase. The Critical Skills Incentive Pay, previously referred to as Career Enlisted Flyer Incentive Pay, will increase to a maximum of $600 per month.

Air Force incentive pay for aviators with less than six years of aviation service hasn’t been increased since 1980. The most recent changes to incentive pay were made in 1999.

In addition to the incentive pay increases, the Air Force expanded the fiscal 2017 Aviation Bonus Program.

“The Air Force’s fiscal year 2017 Aviation Bonus take rates have been lower than what the Air Force needs,” explained Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, the Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services.

“The bonus is now being offered to a larger pool of pilots that includes those beyond their initial service commitments who have previously declined to sign long-term bonus contracts and those whose contracts have expired.

“This is one of many initiatives we are taking to retain experienced pilots,” Grosso stated.

The final initiative is the Voluntary Rated Return to Active Duty, or VRRAD, program that is open to all pilot Air Force Specialty Codes (11X). The service is accepting up to 25 retired 11Xs volunteering to return to active duty for up to 12 months to primarily fill critical-rated staff positions, thereby allowing current and qualified pilots to remain in operational units where they are needed to meet mission requirements.

A number of non-flying staff positions require a pilot’s expertise. The Air Force has reviewed these positions to determine if each is necessary and if it requires a pilot to fulfill its duties. Volunteers for VRRAD

will help fill these positions.

“Our combat-hardened aircrews are at the tip of the spear for applying airpower against our nation’s enemies,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein. “Secretary Wilson and I are committed to doing

everything in our power to ensure we maintain that capability for the nation. We continue to swing away at this issue and we’re looking at multiple options to improve both quality of life and quality of service for our pilots.”

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Beginning Sept. 1, Express Scripts will need annual consent from patients who want to receive automatic refills of their maintenance medications enrolled in TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery. This means that just before one of your prescriptions runs out of refills, Express Scripts will reach out to you to know if you would like your doctor to be contacted to renew the prescription and if you’d like to continue in the Automatic Refill program. If not, Express Scripts will not refill your

prescription.

“This new process gives beneficiaries more control over their medications and keeps the convenience of automatic refills,” said Amy Aldighere, the DOD Program Management Express Scripts senior director “It also makes it easier to opt out of the Auto Refill program and helps to prevent beneficiaries from receiving medications that they no longer need or shouldn’t receive.”

What to Expect

When the last refill of a medication enrolled in the Automatic Refill program ships, Express Scripts will

reach out to you by telephone and/or email (depending on the preference you indicated) and ask the following: • Would you like Express Scripts to reach out to your doctor for a new prescription?

• Do you want to keep your medication enrolled in the Auto Refill program?

How to Respond

Express Scripts will not re-enroll your medication unless they hear from you. You have several ways to respond: • Online at Express-Scripts.com/ TRICARE

• Via the automated phone call from Express Scripts • By calling an Express Scripts patient care advocate (PCA) at 1-877-363-1303

If Express Scripts does not receive your consent within 10 days of reaching out to you, they will remove your medication from the Auto Refill program.

Suicide Prevention Month: How to early intervene, recognize at risk individuals

by Glen Corlin 86th Airlift Wing Violence Prevention Office Suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility. An important key to suicide prevention is early requests for help. Some individuals that are suicidal may “broadcast” their intentions or they may display other risk factors and warning signs for suicide.

It is, therefore, important to take each and every risk factor and/or warning sign seriously. I have been to bases where someone recently committed suicide and a significant amount of the individuals on the base were educated on key risk factors and warning signs. After all, we take suicide awareness classes every year. When asked why certain individuals did not intervene, some stated “I didn’t think s/he was serious” or they were not sure how to intervene. This emphasizes the significance of taking each and every potential risk factor or warning sign seriously and knowing how to intervene early to help save lives.

It is imperative to note that ANYONE can be at risk for suicide. You may know people that you think are mentally resilient and would never consider suicide, but we know everyone has different levels of resilience and in the face of extreme hopelessness or difficulty some may develop suicidal thinking that results from significant psychological distress. It may be referred to as a “Cascade of Events.” It can be triggered by a multitude of stressors … the end of a relationship, work problems, alcohol issues, financial problems, etc. An example can be someone who is having relationship problems. How do they handle it?

Do they go out and drink, which may lead to a DUI? Now, besides having relationship problems, they also have legal and financial problems.

Command then finds out about the

DUI and now they develop occupational problems. The stressors start piling up. What was one issue (DUI) now cascades in to multiple issues.

The person may feel significantly overwhelmed and, at some point, develop the idea that suicide as a viable option. It is important to note that there are also individuals who experience suicidal thoughts or behaviors that exhibit no warning signs or indicator as to why. However, the majority of people that contemplate suicide do give warning signs and have risk factors. Recognizing key risk factors or warning signs are important in identifying at risk individuals and ultimately may save lives.

Some significant risk factors include:

• Relationship problems; loss of loved ones • Prolonged stressors • Substance misuse • Prior history of suicide attempts • Major life transitions (PCS, promotion, retirement, marriage, divorce, etc.)

• Multiple indicators of vulnerability (work, relationship, financial, legal, or alcohol problems) Some of the warning signs can be put in the following categories:

Actions:

• Giving away possessions, saying “good-bye” to loved ones • Withdrawal (family, friends, school, work) • Loss of interest in sports and leisure • Isolation • Increase alcohol or drug use • Impulsive/reckless behavior • Self-mutilation • Extreme behavior changes

Physical:

• Lack of interest in appearance, hygiene changes • Change/loss in sex interest • Disturbed sleep

• Change/loss of appetite, significant weight loss/gain • Significant physical health complaints

Words:

Talking about death or dying, having a suicide plan or voicing intent • “All of my problems will end soon.”

• “No one can do anything to help me now.”

• “Now I know what they were going through.”

• “I just can’t take it anymore.”

• “I am a burden to everyone.”

• “I can’t do anything right.”

• “I just can’t think straight anymore.”

By being aware of these, and other, risk factors or warning signs, we can take action to help those contemplating suicide. What can you do? If you notice any of the warning signs from co-workers, friends, family members or new acquaintances, it is important to communicate. What do you say? You ask, “Are you thinking about suicide?” or “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” They are likely to tell you if asked directly, whether they are or are not contemplating suicide. What would you do if someone said, “Yes, I am thinking about killing myself?”

Stay with the person until help arrives.

Never leave an individual who has expressed imminent risk for suicide alone. If you are able, remove all weapons, substances or other means of

harming self from the area. If you are on the phone with an individual whom you believe is in immediate danger, try keeping them on the line while someone calls emergency services. If this individual is unwilling to accept help, contact their command or law enforcement. It is important to remember, when you ask someone if they are suicidal, be prepared for an answer.

You may be the first person to ask. The suicidal person may want to talk. Let them. You don’t need to supply them with answers and/or solutions. Just listen. Let them know what you plan to do, and accompany them until you have successfully handed them off to a caregiver, leadership or law enforcement. A helpful tool is utilizing the ACE model: Ask your wingman, Care for your wingman, and Escort your wingman.

DPW needs volunteers for ‘FacMan’ training

With several thousands of facilities in the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz footprint to maintain, the Directorate of Public Works needs people to serve as a facility manager or “FacMan” to ensure general purpose administrative facilities and barracks buildings are well cared for.

“I believe the FacMan program is a win-win, because building occupants will have one person to funnel their service and work order concerns to, and that person will work with the DPW staff and the installation

site coordinators for resolution,” said Greg Williams, DPW senior facility engineer.

The first FacMan training opportunity was offered in May, resulting in eight individuals being prepared for the additional duty, but DPW still needs more people to step up and assist the garrison, Williams said.

“The goal is to have one FacMan per facility, so people will have one point of contact to report building issues,” Williams explained. “For example, if we have a leaky sink in a building, instead of several people calling DPW with the same issue, they can contact their building FacMan who would formally inform DPW as well as relay the work order status back to everyone in the building.”

The quarterly-offered, eight-hour course can train up to 30 participants on how to interact with DPW

on processes involving demand maintenance orders, work order site management, the Installation Status Report-Infrastructure program, environmental and energy stewardship, and Interactive Customer Evaluation.

“The course trains people how to fill out and submit the work-order requests and teaches participants everything they need to get the job done right with little to no hiccups,” said Emilio Villegas Jr., DPW operations officer. “After training, the FacMan will become familiar with his or her building and possess the knowledge to react quickly if something goes wrong. They can also do inspections as required to ensure minor repairs are completed as well as assist the garrison in obtaining funds for major building improvements.”

As a retired Army combat engineer, Villegas said this program can help

make quality of life better for those living and working in the community.

“We are proud of our USAG RP facilities,” he said. “With this training, units can keep their buildings maintained at a high level, which reduces long-term facility costs in these fiscally-challenging times.”

Prior to attending the training, applicable employees should be appointed as a facility manager in writing by their unit leadership.

Quiche with leek Ingredients (for 4 people)

Ingredients 1 1/8 cup flour 3/8 cup butter ¼ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper 1 egg yolk 4 whole eggs ½ cup sun-dried tomatoes 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 4 stalks of thyme 2 pounds leek 1 cup milk 1 cup liquid cream

In a bowl place flour, 80% of butter and salt. Get this mixed to the crumble stage. Add egg yolk and 3 tablespoons of ice-cold water.

Make a firm dough. Wrap and place in refrigerator for 1 hour minimum to let it rest.

Cut the dark green part of the leek off.

Wash with cool water. Cut the leek in half.

Then make small half ring slices.

Finely dice sun-dried tomatoes.

Heat the remaining butter in a pan. Add leek and tomatoes. Season with salt pepper and nutmeg. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove from stove and let cool.

Roll the chilled dough out on a floured surface in approximately a 10-inch circle.

Butter a tart pan. After folding rolled dough into quarters open it back up in the buttered tart pan. Press dough to all sides. Use a fork to prevent air pockets in the dough by making multiple fork holes in the raw dough.

Add tomato/leek mixture. Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius or 180 degrees on a convection oven setting.

Chop the thyme leaves after removing from stalk. Mix with eggs, milk, cream, salt, pepper and nutmeg.

Pour into pie shell.

Put on the lowest shelf in oven. Let it cook for 45-50 minutes, depending upon the oven.

Remove from oven and let cool for 15 minutes before serving, to let the eggs set.

The mixture must be firm before taking out of the oven.

A nice balsamic/olive oil tomato salad with baguette makes a lovely side dish for this quiche. If you would like to serve with wine, a Sancerre white wine would complement the flavors well.

Understanding the service member’s Civil Relief Act Part 1: Protection from default judgements

What is the Service member’s Civil Relief Act? Servicemember’s Civil Relief Act.

The Service member’s Civil Relief Act (SCRA), 50 U.S.C. §§ 3901-4043 is a federal law that protects active duty service members from a variety of civil and administrative issues. Congress determined that granting service members these various rights and protections not only protects the individual service member’s due process rights but also strengthens the national defense, because the SCRA allows service members to focus on the mission instead of focusing on personal judicial and administrative problems.

Application.

The SRCA does not apply in all situations. The SRCA only applies in the United States or any territory that is subject to United States jurisdiction. This means that the German government will not enforce the SCRA. Furthermore, the SCRA only applies to civil judicial and administrative proceedings. service members cannot use this law to pause or delay criminal proceedings.

Eligible service members.

The SCRA only applies to active duty service members of the Armed Forces. Reservists are eligible for protection under the SCRA when serving on active duty status.

Likewise, National Guardsmen are protected when serving on active duty under Title 10 status or during a presidential declaration of national emergency.

Protection from default judgements.

While the SCRA contains several protections for service members, this article will focus on protections from default judgements in judicial proceedings.

A default judgement is a ruling granted by a court or judge when one party to the law suit fails to perform a court ordered action, and consequently, the court settles the legal dispute in favor of the opposing party. A default judgement is analogous to a referee in a soccer match awarding the match to one team because the other team failed to take the field. The soccer team lost because it never showed up to the match.

A default judgement commonly occurs when a defendant is summoned to appear at court, but fails to respond in time, fails to answer

a complaint, or fails respond to a motion. In such situations, the judge issues a default judgement in favor of the plaintiff, and the defendant is legally obligated to abide by the court’s ruling even though the defendant did not appear in court.

The SCRA protects eligible service members from default judgements if the service member cannot attend the judicial proceeding because of military service. The court can, however, issue a default judgement without the service member present provided that the court follows the procedures in the SCRA. For example, if the service member-Defendant does not make a required appearance in court, the Plaintiff must file an affidavit with the court stating (1) whether or not the Defendant is in military service, or (2) that the Plaintiff cannot determine whether the Defendant is in military service. If the court determines that the Defendant is an active duty service member, then the court cannot enter a judgement until after the court assigns an attorney to represent the service member’s best interest. Thereafter, the attorney may petition the court for a stay, or a temporary pause, for at least 90 days while he or she attempts to contact the Defendant.

Vacating a default judgement.

If a service member returns to the United States only to learn that a court has issued a default judgement against him or her, then the service member may be able to vacate the default judgement and reopen the case. In order to reopen the case, the service member must petition the court. Returning to the soccer example, the losing team that failed to take the field would ask the referee to restart the match, because the losing team was not aware that a game was scheduled. In the petition, the service member must show that (1) his or her military service prejudiced or prevented the service member from attending the judicial procedure, and (2) the service member has a meritorious defense to the alleged wrong that is the subject of the civil action or administrative proceeding.

Kaiserslautern swings during Barbarossa fest

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern’s annual Barbarossa fest, “Swinging Lautern,” started Thursday and will continue today and Saturday in the center of town. The local sales promotion agency called “Kaiser in Lautern,” in cooperation with the city of Kaiserslautern, is sponsoring this fest with an international musical program featuring swing, blues, boogie, jazz, soul and salsa.

Numerous singers, music

groups and marching bands perform in the streets downtown and on stages put up at Altenhof, Schillerplatz and Stiftsplatz.

“For years now, ‘Swinging Lautern’ can be found in our city’s event calendar,” said Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel. “Our sales promoting agency and city event office organized a diversified musical program with many performers who can be seen live on stage.”

Musical performances and other activities lure visitors to Kaiserslautern’s Barbarossa fest today and Saturday.

The U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band’s Wings of Dixie will perform until 3 p.m. in front of Stiftskirche. Men in Blue, a group of the State Police Orchestra Rheinland-Pfalz will march through the streets from noon to 3 p.m.

Performers tonight will include The Dirty Boogie Orchestra, Tin Pan Alley and the Phoenix Brass Band.

Another USAFE Band will perform Saturday on the stage on Stiftsplatz. The Ambassadors will entertain the audience noon to 3 p.m. Other bands performing Saturday will be Jens & Friends, The Soul Providers, Crew V and the Rosevalley Sisters.

“We also put up a stage on Martinsplatz to support the 40th anniversary celebrations of Emmerich-Smola-Music School and Music Academy Kaiserslautern,” said Volker Stephan, chief of the Kaiser in Lautern sales promotion agency.

Experienced musicians and newcomers will be part of the anniversary program.

Flashmobs are scheduled for 3 and 6 p.m. Saturday at Martinsplatz.

“Besides a great musical program, stores will offer special activities, and caterers serve fine food in white pagoda tents around Stiftskirche,” said Stephan.

A kiddie train will give free rides through the center. Children can participate

in crafting, jump on a jumping castle and get their faces painted.

Fashion shows presenting this year’s fall and winter collection will take place at the stage on Altenhof, from 4 to 7 p.m. today, and between 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Trippstadt celebrates charcoal burners fest, smithy fest

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Trippstadt will celebrate its annual “Kohlenbrennerfest,” charcoal burners’ fest, Saturday and Sunday. Besides the traditional burning of charcoal, the fest includes demonstrations of old craftsmanship, displays, children’s activities and live music.

Until the 19th century, charcoal burning was an important branch of trade in the Palatinate Forest. The charcoal was needed for the iron-melting furnace. That’s how people made their living.

In memory of this old craftsmanship, members of local clubs and associations will be in charge of demonstrating the burning of charcoal the first weekend in September. Traditionally, a week prior to the event, they pile up huge amounts of wood

to build a coal kiln. A kind of chimney is surrounded by many sticks and covered with turf. The brushwood in the chimney is lit and the kiln starts burning. Then the charcoal burners watch the burning, day and night, for up to a week, keeping the air outside the kiln. If the smoke coming out is blue, the burning process is correct. After the burning, the kiln falls down.

The big charcoal pieces are chopped up, the others are raked, and all is collected and packaged.

During the fest, the whole process will be demonstrated again. One kiln will be built, another will burn, and a third will already be burnt down.

Visitors get to buy the charcoal in October.

Mayor Manfred Stahl will officially open the event 5 p.m. Saturday near the coal kiln, which will be lit.

The traditional smithy fest with smiths from all over Germany and neighboring countries will demonstrate their skills 5 to 8 p.m.

Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday in the yard of the local smithy called Schmiede Huber. Goldsmiths and silversmiths will display and show their fine and elaborate works.

Festivities with musical entertainment will also take place on Hauptstrasse. Local clubs and restaurants will serve regional food specialties in their yards.

Two special exhibitions, “250 years Trippstadt Palace,” and “French Revolutionary Wars,” will be displayed 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Eisenhuettenmuseum (iron works museum).
