Ramstein Airmen partner to help renovate Georgian school Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Sara Keller 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs GORI, Georgia — For the past month, the hallways of Gori Public School No. 4 were alive with the sounds of construction workers sanding, sawing, tearing down, building up and transforming what once looked like a century-old building. The days following were much quieter as a team of U.S. Air Force and Georgian army engineers were still hard at work making their finishing touches. As the last coat of paint dried, local community members, teachers and students gathered in front of the school for the culminating ceremony to celebrate the project. On Aug. 31, distinguished visitors from the U.S. Embassy in Georgia and Georgian officials celebrated the completion of the school restoration project, financed by the U.S. European Command and implemented by the Office of Defense Cooperation, U.S. Embassy to Georgia. The humanitarian assistance project had a construction materials budget of See RENOVATION, Page 3

'We're all in this together' — a senior NCO's five constants

COMMENTARY

by Senior Master Sgt. Rodney Bernard 52nd Munitions Maintenance Group SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany — Service in the Air Force today means different things for different people. Depending on your unique circumstances, such as family dynamics, job or upbringing, how you navigate through those dynamics can have a significant impact on your time serving and significantly help you prepare for the day when you will no longer wear the uniform, whether that’s after four years or 30 years. Through a series of both positive and negative experiences as well as some great counseling over the years, I’ve gained insight and perspective that have served me well for more than 22 years. I’m proud to share the five most important constants I’ve learned over the course of my career in the hopes they may help someone else navigate through their own individual circumstances and maybe have a positive effect for someone. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had some good supervisors, mentors, friends and family who

have looked out for me. They’ve collectively helped me take advantage of the opportunities the Air Force has presented to me over the span of my career, which in turn helped me prepare for life after my service. Generally speaking, time and experience yield clarity. Here are some things I’ve learned and learned to value through the years. Integrity and respect: Without them, you may not even get through the door of an organization. In fact, it could be one of the quickest ways out of an organization. We live in an extremely global world today with information moving faster than ever before, militarily, economically and socially. Many times, as we’re presented with challenges, the best path to a viable solution will be rooted in mutual integrity and respect. Invest in yourself, both financially and academically: Understanding the relationship between time, money and interest can be one of the most important lifelong, beneficial lessons one can learn. Similarly, understanding the doors that a college degree could open for you toward achieving your goals is equally valuable. The Air Force offers exceptional

ing the same procedures as the initial inspection lane. Another change is the newly installed calibrated brake machine which eliminated the need to road-test brakes. “By getting rid of the brake road test, we were able to knock off three minutes of inspection time per vehicle, and we got rid of any subjectivity by the inspectors,” Santos said. The calibrated brake machine tests for brake imbalance between all brakes which are a safety hazard.

benefits, assistance and opportunities in both of these areas that could significantly improve your earning power and lifestyle for years, long after you lace up your boots for the last time. Get involved in your community: Seek out and get involved in a community organization that you believe in supporting — a cause that is important to you. The key is to do it because you genuinely want to do it, not because you believe someone else wants you to do it. Aside from the personal satisfaction of doing so, community involvement can also provide networking opportunities, allow you to get experience outside of your primary job and help you to develop significant personal and professional relationships. Be careful with alcohol: Keep your alcohol use in check. If the bar tab starts to become a major expenditure on your budget or waking up each morning with a headache has become the norm, it may be time to look in the mirror and ask yourself some honest questions. Although many people believe they can hide hangovers, people do notice when you’re not at full speed. If you need help, get help. If you still find yourself

With the new machine, inspection technicians are able to diagnose which brake is off or causing issues and exactly what percentage the brake is off by. consuming significant amounts of alcohol very frequently regardless of your age or rank, and you feel like you’ve got it under control, just be honest with yourself. It usually catches up with you, either physically, mentally or legally. Alcoholrelated problems can spiral out of control very quickly and can have significant effects on you, your organization and your family. Balance: Find the balance in your life. It’s difficult to go full speed 24/7 without eventually breaking down at some point. With today’s challenges with less people, time and money, you have to recognize when you’re out of balance. Find things that will make your life more efficient. Be proactive as best as you can. Maintain your family responsibilities as one of your priorities. Stay physically active to help relieve stress. Eat well, and most importantly, ask for help when you need it — no one is in this alone. I hope someone finds my message helpful, and maybe this will spark an opportunity for further conversation. This device will allow the vehicle to hang in the air while it is inspected underneath. “We currently have two inspectors per vehicle. Once we have the suspension shaker, it will eliminate the need for two people as one person will be

able to inspect a vehicle,” said Master Sgt. Timothy Trace, 86 VRS vehicle maintenance superintendent. “We’ll be able to serve more customers in a shorter amount of time.” For questions regarding the inspection process, go to the Kapaun Air Station POV Inspection Station Interactive Customer Evaluation Survey at http://ice.disa.mil/ index.cfm?fa=site&site_ id=10&dep=DoD, click on “Safety and Security,” and then click “POV Inspection Station.”

EO implements new sexual orientation policy by Staff Sgt. Leslie Keopka 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Department of Defense implemented a change to the military equal opportunity directive in June to resolve unlawful discrimination complaints based on sexual orientation. Prior to the change, there were five stand-alone categories that fell under EO: race, color, sex, national origin and religion.

“This (policy change) is one more door that has opened to inclusion,” said Bryan Osborne, 86th Airlift Wing EO director and alternative dispute resolution manager. “This is a huge step forward for our Air Force, the DOD and for America.” Throughout history, the U.S. military went through a time when women weren’t allowed to serve and African Americans weren’t allowed to become pilots. This change is just one more step toward opening the door to finally

seeing all men and women are treated equal, Osborne said. If a service member is having an issue in their unit that cannot be resolved by utilizing their chain of command, they are encouraged to seek help with the EO office. “The EO office has so much to offer,” said Tech. Sgt. Shajita Rios, 86th AW EO adviser. “We have the latitude to clarify and address allegations, offer follow-up assistance or even serve as neutral third parties to work out disputes using facilitation and counseling methods.”

$40,000 with the goal of supporting national military strategy and enhancing the operational readiness skills of military personnel while providing substantial benefits to host country populations. For a little more than 30 days, the U.S. Air Force engineers worked side by side with their Georgian counterparts to completely renovate a gymnasium, install new toilets, fix and paint the walls of the first floor hallway and even build a completely new access ramp from scratch. Many disabled children attend the school, so better access for those children was a top priority throughout the project. Capt. Parnaoz Svanidze, headquarters, Georgian Land Forces, who assisted with many aspects including logistics and scheduling of the project, said one of the main focuses for the project was to renovate the school and attached gym for the children with disabilities because most of the disabled children that live in Gori attend Public School No. 4. “I’m so grateful to work with Americans again,” Svanidze said, who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and worked side by side with U.S. Marines for six months in Afghanistan. “I like working with (the Air Force engineers) because they work really hard and know exactly how to do it. I can tell they do it from the heart because they know that everything they’ve done is for the children and for the future.” During the ceremony, the

sounds of the neighborhood school children could be heard throughout the crowd, laughing, giggling and whispering in anticipation. They were excited to see all the new updates to their school. As the last words were spoken, and the crowd dispersed to take the grand tour, a group of kids weaved through the crowd and headed straight for the new gym. “The gym in the school has been used as a safe haven for these kids in the neighborhood for years,” said Tech. Sgt. Brendan Allen, 435th Construction and Training Squadron and Georgia Humanitarian and Civic

Assistance project manager. “When we got here the kids couldn’t even play here without pieces of the wall falling down on them. Now it’s safe.” The gym has been completely redone. The floors and walls were completely remodeled; the basketball backboards replaced; new lighting was installed; and a fresh coat of yellow paint for the walls and white paint for the high ceilings were applied. “This whole project has been an amazing experience,” Allen said. “My guys worked really hard the entire time. I don’t want to go, but I know we can leave here knowing we helped the children, and

EO advisers are there to assist and clarify the information and ensure members understand the new policy; they will address cases of sexual orientation discrimination the same as they do for the other five categories. “It is our job to take care of Airmen and get their minds off any negative human relations climate issues,” Rios said. “We want to help get them back on the mission and do what they do best.” To date, there have been no sexual orientation com-

plaints made on Ramstein. Osborne credits commanders for engaging with their units and spreading awareness. “In my 33 years of federal service, I have never met a commander or director that does not care about his or her people,” Osborne said. “They want to make sure the people who take care of the mission are taken care of.” Military or civilian personnel can contact EO with any questions or concerns at 489-8534 or they can email 86aw.meo@us.af.mil.

we can be proud of our work.” This HCA project is roughly one of 15 projects that will be done this year throughout the European and Eurasian regions and has trained military engineers from the Army, Navy, Marines, active-duty Air Force, Reserve and National Guard forces in the past. The team explained that their time spent in Georgia has been extremely rewarding and has given them an appreciation for hard work. “It’s extremely impressive how hard the Georgian engi-

neers worked,” Allen said. “Without their support, we definitely wouldn’t have been able to get as much done in that amount of time, and we’re extremely thankful for it.” The children played basketball in their new gym until the sun set behind the mountains that overlook Gori. Although the crowd had cleared and their teachers were home, they lined the railing in front of the school, laughing, playing cards and just being together. They have their safe haven back, and it’s better than ever.

Fall into good safety habits this autumn Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As the hot summer months transition into breezier autumn days, many are trying to fit in their last trips of the season. Whether staying at home and getting cozy for the brisk fall season or planning a lastminute soiree, Airmen are advised to continue practicing safe behavior by heeding pertinent safety tips. “One of the biggest hazards comes from those who are trying to get in those lastminute vacations,” said Tech. Sgt. Joseph Hernandez, 86th Airlift Wing Ground Safety NCO. “We see a lot of people going out far during these late trips to enjoy the warmer weather before it cools down late in the season.” Airmen should not rush their planning and continue to thoroughly assess the risks

During the autumn months, the 86th Airlift Wing Ground Safety Office on Ramstein advises Airmen to continue making risk assessments while planning for activities.

of the area to which they are travelling, said Hernandez. According to Hernandez, another risk in autumn is driving on Halloween night. The risks of vehicle-related accidents rise significantly during this time. “The risk with this holiday is the high volume of kids around at night,” Hernandez said. “They’re running house to house and in the streets. This is dangerous to begin with, now put them in dark-

clothed costumes at night.” Halloween isn’t the only aspect of fall that should have motorists cautious. During the fall, Germany’s weather can be unpredictable. Hernandez said that preparing for an accident is the best advice to heed and it starts with the vehicle. “Make sure your car functions properly before the bad weather hits,” Hernandez said. “I also recommend purchasing decent tires that will keep good friction between the

rubber and the road. If you want to upgrade your suspension or engine, make sure you upgrade those tires as well to match that increase in power.” While bad weather cannot be prevented, one major risk among Airmen that can be controlled is irresponsible drinking. With many fests occurring in autumn, Airmen should practice safe drinking habits, especially those new to alcohol. “Airmen who haven’t drunk a whole lot stateside and are going to these events for the first time are going to try new things out,” Hernandez said. “They’re inexperienced. … This could lead to hazardous behavior such as drinking and driving.” The final advice Hernandez gave was in regards to the mass amount of Airmen returning from deployment this season, as he warned about a behavior pattern he calls “the invincibility complex.” “They’ve been downrange

for a while and working really hard, maybe getting shot at as well,” Hernandez said. “When they come back to the “normal” side of life, they believe since they survived all of that they can do whatever they want and nothing will hurt them.” With the increase in risky behavior during the autumn season, the likeliness in car accidents increases vastly, Hernandez said. “It sneaks up on people,” Hernandez continued. “My advice is if you think you’re doing something reckless, ask yourself if the ends justify the means. No matter the activity, Hernandez believes assessing the risks of the situation is the best way to prevent injuries or worse. Organizations can contact their safety representatives to learn more about what is expected from their respective shops. For more information, call 480-SAFE (7233) or 06371-47-7233.

Airmen, Soldiers display rapid medical response Story and photos by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Saving lives is not only the responsibility of medical responders within the KMC, all Airmen and Soldiers must stay current on training to respond in times of need. More than 60 NATO officers from around the globe attended a medical response demonstration Aug. 25 on Ramstein. In an effort to advise partnered nations’ top surgeon generals, approximately 30 Airmen and Soldiers gathered to perform the threestep response procedures that take place during casualty and medical evacuations. Members moved through scenarios that began with caring for a simulated injured service member on scene to transporting them to “role

three” onto an aircraft for further transport. Seeing this demonstration was very beneficial to strength-

ening NATO bonds, according to Ugandan army Lt. Col. Joseph Asea, Bombo Military Hospital orthopedic surgeon.

“We all have different capabilities, and the way we do things may not be the same,” Asea said. “When we are working together, it is good to harmonize our processes while handling casualties so that everything is standardized. One method may not be acceptable to the other, but if we synchronize them we can do it in a similar way and strengthen our partnership.” According to U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Erwin Gines, 86th Medical Group chief nurse, the U.S. military is equipped with a unique skillset compared to other countries. Self-aid and buddy care training is taught regardless of the job assigned to the service member. Women in leadership speak on equality Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For as far back as history goes, equality between genders has been a struggle. Until 1920, women didn’t even have the right to vote in the U.S. Though certain aspects of life may never be completely equal, the modern world has progressively strived for equality. Though the U.S. military has followed suit, it has not always been this way. Before 1917, only men could serve in the military. Women’s roles were meant to be homemakers and caregivers while men went to war. Though a female-free military seems a thing of the distant past, certain male-dominated career fields are still adapting to support the mission with their female counterparts beside them. During a Women’s Equality panel, four of Ramstein’s leading women came together to speak with Airmen about their struggles, triumphs and the path they and their predecessors leave behind. “Women continue to prove every day that they can do the same as men when it comes to the mission,” said Col. Laura Johnson, 86th Civil

Engineer Group commander. “I think a lot of that has to do with the women who came before us. I think it’s very important to remember those women; they paved the way for us today.” As a fighter pilot, Col. Andra Kniep, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing commander, shared stories of overcoming doubts her peers had of her. “I graduated from the (Air Force) Academy two months after they began allowing women to fly in combat,” Kniep said. “I became the third female A-10 pilot in the Air Force. I was told I wouldn’t be able to do it, no one would want to marry a female A-10 pilot and I’d never have a family; I have all of those. I’m excited to see us breaking down those barriers.”

Col. Laura Johnson, 86th Civil Engineer Group commander, answers questions during a Women’s Equality Day leadership panel, Aug. 26 on Ramstein. Four of Ramstein’s female leaders spoke about how the women who came before them paved the way to allow them to be as successful as they are today.

During the panel, Airmen had the opportunity to ask questions. Male Airmen attended to share their support as well as get the leaders’ perspective on how to interact better with their female troops. “Treat women the way you would treat a man,” said Col. Nancy Bozzer, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing commander, in response to an Airman’s question. “Make them earn their way all the way up to the top.

There should be no difference in treatment. Should you be respectful to a lady? Yes. In return, she should also respect you back, with mutual respect and professionalism.” Chief Master Sgt. 86th FSS hosts 51st Ramstein Bazaar Courtesy of the Ramstein Bazaar

T

he Ramstein Bazaar has been a part of the military culture for those stationed in Europe since 1965. If you’ve ever been assigned to a base or post in Germany, Belgium, England, Italy or somewhere else in Europe, chances are you’ve attended or at least heard of this shopping extravaganza. The first Ramstein Bazaar was held from Sept. 18 to 20, 1965, at the Ramstein Community Center. The Ramstein Officers’ Wives Club, a small and close group of women, hosted this inaugural event. They had 66 vendors, 11 volunteers and made $5,000 in net proceeds. Fast forward 51 years, the bazaar is now an official 86th Force Support Squadron event. It is a massive, full-scale event that encompasses the resources and com-

mitment of Ramstein Air Base, the surrounding local economy and the KMC. In 2014, the Ramstein Bazaar celebrated its 50th year. It was a huge success through the selfless efforts of hundreds of volunteers contributing over 11,500 volunteer hours. There were 7,400 cars parked, 28,000 patrons served and $1.748 million sales with net proceeds exceeding $265,000. This year, the bazaar will have more than 135 vendors selling items such as antiques, pottery, cheese, grandfather clocks, clothing, jewelry and more. There will be dozens of food options as well. The food court is manned entirely by Airmen and family volunteers from private organizations. The 2015 Ramstein Bazaar will host vendors from countries such as Russia, France, Poland, Portugal,

Turkey and Germany who travel to the bazaar to showcase their handcrafted items and products. Net proceeds from the Ramstein Bazaar are given back to the KMC through the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club Welfare Fund, benefiting organizations such as Air Force Aid Society, Fisher House, USO, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, Boy and Girl Scouts of America and other local programs. Kelly Rodriguez, 2015 Ramstein Bazaar chair for ROSC, says the bazaar helps non-profit and community organizations around base that would not usually receive funding. “In the past 15 years alone, ROSC has returned over $3.7 million to the community towards functions like high school graduation, scout programs and various group and squadron awards, not to mention over $2 million in college scholarships

to our military connected children,” Rodriguez said. From January to August 2015, ROSC has given away $60,000 in scholarships, $33,000 to schools, $19,000 to KMC organizations, $13,000 to base organizations, $3,000 to youth groups, $2,900 to scout programs and $1,000 to local chapters of national organizations. To really understand the impact the event has on the community, come experience the bazaar for yourself. Supporting and shopping at the Ramstein Bazaar is not only a fun experience with incredible vendors and food, but shoppers also financially help hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and their families. For more information on the Ramstein Bazaar or to volunteer, visit www.ramsteinbazaar.org, or search for Ramstein Bazaar on Facebook.

Travis welcomes 86th AW hero home by Senior Airman Nicole Leidholm 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, the Airman who helped foil a terrorist attack on a train in France Aug. 21, arrived at Travis Air Force Base Sept. 3, with his mother and brother by his side. “We’re thrilled to welcome A1C Spencer Stone back to America,” said Col. Joel Jackson, the 60th Air Mobility Wing commander. “He’s here at Travis Air Force Base for continued medical care and rest and recuperation with his family in the local area. We ask that everyone please respect the Stone family’s privacy as he continues to heal.” Stone returned home on a KC-10 Extender from Germany with 25 redeployed Soldiers from Southwest Asia and was greeted by about 300 Airmen and their families from the base. “We’re extremely proud of A1C Stone. It takes tremendous courage and selflessness to place others’ safety above your own — he put into action our core value of ‘service before self,’” said Chief

Master Sgt. Alan Boling, the 60th AMW command chief. “Again, we are extremely proud of these men for their willingness to take action and stop what could have been a terrible tragedy.” Stone was previously assigned to the 60th Medical Operations Squadron pediatrics flight as an aerospace medical services technician. “A1C Stone is an energetic medical technician, and I’m sure he was hoping for more ‘action’ than he found in the pediatric clinic as his first duty section,” said Master Sgt. Tanya Hubbard, the 60th MDOS family medicine residency and pediatric clinics superintendent. “However, he fit into our team seamlessly and always had a great attitude. He is a hard worker, and I was happy he was part of our team.” Hubbard added that Stone's Air Force training influenced how the events in France played out. “I think his awareness training helped him to be sensitive to potential dangers and kept him on his toes as he toured throughout Europe,” Hubbard said. “I’m sure that when it came down to the moment, he was able to act on impulse due to those protection skills. In the end, I

believe it was the core values, Air Force and personal, that guided him that day.” Stone’s life changed forever two weeks ago when he and his childhood friends, Oregon National Guard Spc. Aleksander Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, a Sacramento State college student, were on vacation when an armed gunman entered their train carrying an assault rifle, a handgun and a box cutter. The three friends, with the help of a British passenger, subdued the gunman after his rifle jammed. “Our Airmen live in an environment of constant change, we learn to adapt quickly and take action. Fortunately, Stone’s experience and training allowed him to put these lessons into action onboard the train,” Boling said. “Stone and his friends did what they thought was right and stopped a dangerous attack and for that we thank them. We wish Stone and the others who were injured a speedy recovery.” Stone is currently an ambulance service technician with the 65th MDOS stationed at Lajes Field, Azores. The Sacramento, Calif., native will be reassigned to Travis AFB in October. “We are all very proud of A1C Stone,” Hubbard said.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Erwin Gines, 86th Medical Group chief nurse, briefs NATO officers on U.S. Air Force and Army medical evacuation procedures Aug. 25 on Ramstein. Maj. Kimberly Polston, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Surgeon General’s office international health specialist. “We are trying to help our partners who are deploying in support of peacekeeping operations in Africa. They are going into other countries, moving both patients and cargo, and we are right alongside them to help with training.” Training like this strengthens the NATO alliance, maintains readiness and ensures all members of NATO can save a life if necessary. “Instead of focusing on treating women or men differently, we should be treating each other like Airmen, regardless of gender,” Dennis said. The leadership panel was an opportunity for Airmen of all ranks to ask senior leaders personal questions about their experiences. The leaders said though things were more difficult when they first joined the Air Force, they're glad to see more opportunities being offered to both genders. As a group continuously working toward equality, the Air Force has and continues to see great things coming from its Airmen.

• 2 pears • 1/2 liter red wine • 1/4 liter milk • 100 grams of cooking chocolate • Sugar • Cinnamon and some corn starch • Vanilla ice cream • Whipped cream Heat the red wine and add the sugar and cinnamon to it. Peel the pears, remove the piths, cut them in half and add them to the hot red wine. Meanwhile heat up the milk with the

cooking chocolate and let the chocolate melt, while continuously stirring. Place the pears in the simmering red wine for about ten minutes. Don’t let them get too soft! When the pears are soft enough, take them out of the red wine. Take a bit of corn starch and add water to it. Stir it and add it it slowly into the simmering red wine to thicken it. Take a nice plate, place one scoop of vanilla ice cream and a half pear on it and pour the thickened red wine and the melted chocolate over the top. The last step would be to add the whipped cream on the top...and you have a delicious warm/ cold dessert.

I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did! See you next time...

USAREUR, NATO leaders conduct Sustainment Terrain Walk by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs MANNHEIM, Germany — Key leaders from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and NATO partners conducted a whirlwind Sustainment Terrain Walk Sept. 1 to 3, stopping at more than a dozen logistics sites throughout the KMC and elsewhere in Europe. The Sustainment Terrain Walk provided an opportunity for the leadership of USAREUR, NATO countries and other regional partners to assess the capabilities of several key logistics sites in Germany, Latvia and Poland that may be used in support of future NATO and partner nation operations. The terrain walk began with the key leaders visiting the European Activity Set at the Coleman Worksite. The EAS is the Brigade Combat Team’s worth of equipment, pre-staged and maintained at the worksite in order to enable the U.S. Army’s new rotational forces concept. The terrain walk also included stops at the Kaiserslautern Army Depot,

Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Miesau Army Depot and other sites located within the KMC area of responsibility. The leaders continued to Bremerhaven and Nordenham in Germany before traveling to Riga, Latvia. All three of these sites are critical seaports that are used regularly in support of NATO operations.

The final stop of the terrain walk was Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland, which is used as a training area for Operation Atlantic Resolve. OAR demonstrates continued U.S. commitment to the collective security of NATO and to the enduring peace and stability in the region. USAREUR is leading the OAR-

enhanced land force, multinational training and security cooperation activities that are taking place across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. These activities build multinational interoperability; strengthen relationships and trust among allied armies; contribute to regional stability; and demonstrate the United States’ commitment to NATO. The information gathered during the terrain walk will be used to develop procedures to support OAR, the EAS, rotational forces and other U.S. efforts in support of NATO. According to USAREUR Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the U.S. Army’s current challenge in Europe is to accomplish, with limited resources, the same mission that massive formations of troops accomplished in years past. “Years ago the United States had 300,000 troops in Europe,” Hodges said. “Our mission was to deter aggression. Now we have 30,000. Our mission is still to deter aggression. Our task now is to take the 30,000 and make them act like we have 300,000.”

Culinary Warrior of the Year competition heats up the kitchen

Story and photos by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Office There are never too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to the 21st Theater

Sustainment Command Culinary Warrior of the Year competition that was held Sept. 2 at the Clock Tower Dining Facility on Kleber Kaserne. Soldiers from dining facilities throughout the 21st TSC participated, travelling from as far as Grafenwoehr

and Baumholder in order to compete. The competition began at 6 a.m. with Soldiers and NCOs taking the Army Physical Readiness Test. Phase Two, a Soldier Board, followed later in the day with each participant demonstrat-

ing their military bearing, knowledge of basic Soldier skills and the APRT. The capstone event for the competition was the cook-off as Soldiers put their kitchen skills to the ultimate test. Although the Culinary Warrior Competition is in its 22nd year, this year the format for the 21st TSC was different. This time participants were told which ingredients must be used, much like current television cooking shows. “You have one hour to cook a dish for one person,” said Sgt. 1st Class Ulysses Acheampong, 66th Transportation Company, 21st TSC, one of the judges, while addressing the competitors. “Time starts now.” The participants competed in two categories: Soldiers E-4 and below, and NCOs E-5 and above. Each Soldier had to include in their meal a chicken breast, asparagus and noodles. Various other items, including cheese, but-

ter, spices and bread crumbs were available and optional for use. As the competition started, Soldiers began cutting, chopping, stirring and measuring. The judges were watching their every move. Although the final presentation was very important, the judges were also grading on the Soldiers’ overall performance including safety, food handling and cleanliness in the kitchen as well as the See Warrior, Page 15

Syrian train-and-equip effort continues by Jim Garamone Department of Defense News, Defense Media Activity WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense will continue to support moderate Syrian forces in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said today. Cook said at a news conference that DOD officials believe local forces are the deciding factor in the fight against ISIL, “and that has not changed.” Defense Secretary Ash Carter has been candid about the delays and problems that have confronted the trainand-equip effort for moderate Syrian forces. Only 54 Syrian fighters graduated from the first class and that group was ambushed and scattered in late July by Al-Nusra fighters — a group affiliated with al-Qaida. “The secretary still believes that it’s important to provide support to those moderate Syrian forces,” Cook said. “We’ve seen and Warrior, from Page 12

George Deloatch, chief, food operations sergeant and president of this year’s competition. “These Soldiers and NCOs are the best of the best. They have talent and we just want to pull it out of them.” All competitors hold the military occupational specialty of 92G, food service specialist. They will all receive their Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Lee, Va. Their official title will soon change to culinarian.

the secretary’s been candid about what happened initially with the train-and-equip program. We’ve learned lessons from that, (we) continue to learn lessons from that, and we’re going to continue moving forward with that program.” U.S. officials are considering other ways to enhance the effectiveness of anti-ISIL fighters and enhance the overall effectiveness of the fight against ISIL, Cook said. A second group of Syrians are being trained now and several thousand Syrians recommended for training are being vetted, the press secretary said. Cook addressed news reports that Russia is providing aid to the regime of Syrian President Bashir alAssad. “Any effort to bolster the Assad regime right now would potentially be destabilizing,” Cook said. “Our focus is on fighting ISIL, and we think that further support for the Assad regime could actually be counterproductive.” Russia propping up the For many of the participants, this was their first competition. “I felt pressed for time, but I persevered. It was fun,” said Spc. Civil Air Patrol joins total force ‘Airmen’ by Staff Sgt. Whitney Stanfield Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information WASHINGTON — When conducting missions for the Air Force as the official Air Force auxiliary, the Civil Air Patrol is now included in the Air Force’s definition of the total force. CAP has provided 74 years of support to emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs. In August 2015, the Air Force updated Doctrine Volume 2, “Leadership,” expanding the Air Force’s descriptions of total force and Airmen to now consist of reg-

ular, Guard, Reserve, civilian and auxiliary members. Historically, the broader term Airmen referred to uniformed and civilian members of the U.S. Air Force (officer or enlisted, regular, Reserve or Guard) regardless of rank, component or specialty. With this newest change, Air Force leaders should consider each part of the total force, including the auxiliary, when determining the most effective and efficient ways to complete the mission. CAP has approximately 57,000 volunteers and 550 aircraft assigned to more than 1,500 units stateside available or currently supporting non-combat missions on behalf of the Air Force.

“As a strategic partner, these unpaid professionals have boldly served our nation saving the Air Force almost 40 times the cost of using military assets for each hour served,” said Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James. “Inclusion in the total force reflects the continuing key contributions of this highly trained and equipped organization.” The auxiliary members who fly the nearly 100,000 hours per year performing disaster relief, counterdrug, search and rescue, fighter interceptor training, aerial observation and cadet orientation flights will now be included in the total force and

New AF streamers approved for Global War on Terrorism operations, campaigns by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — The secretary of the Air Force has authorized the use of war service streamers and the new Global War on Terrorism Service streamer. In addition, the Air Force credited 1,442 units with campaign participation, making them eligible for a campaign streamer. The war service streamers allow the Air Force to recognize units that deploy aircraft, Airmen and equipment to an air expeditionary force, i.e., rainbow unit, for the Iraq, Afghanistan and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary campaigns. The GWOT-S streamer recognizes home station units that provide direct support to GWOT operations, such as units providing homeland defense supporting Operation Noble Eagle, airport security and remotely piloted aircraft missions.

The air expeditionary force construct of providing forces forward to combatant commanders from home station garrison units resulted in the need to change the way the Air Force recognizes units. Previously, during deactivation of expeditionary units, the guidon and any campaign streamers received were rolled up and stored away, leaving the home unit with no recognition of their war contributions. “We felt we were missing an opportunity to fully recognize the efforts and teamwork of active, Guard and Reserve garrison units,” said Brig. Gen. Lenny Richoux, Air Force Services director. “These course corrections on awarding streamers will capture the efforts, sacrifices and history of our Air Force more accurately.” Guidance on the war service streamers and the GWOT-S streamer was released by the Air Force Personnel Center

and can be found on the myPers website. As part of this effort, the Air Force also officially announced that 1,442 units were credited with campaign participation in support of military operations in the Afghanistan, Iraq and GWOT areas of operation, going back to 2001. Guidance on campaign participation credit and campaign streamers can be found in Chapter 4 of Air Force Instruction 36-2803, “The Air Force Military Awards and Decorations Program.” “The streamers recognize the unit’s efforts to train and endure the heavy operations tempo during the last 14 years, and to recognize the sacrifices of those service members deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and other GWOT areas of operation,” Richoux said. “These streamers are part of our Air Force heritage, which continues to be written by our great Airmen worldwide.”

referred to as Airmen during the performance of official duties in recognition of their contributions to the Air Force. “Civil Air Patrol enjoys a proud legacy of selfless sacrifice and service to its country and community that spans decades,” said Maj. Gen. Joseph Vazquez, CAP national commander. “Our ability to augment the Air Force is second to none. We provide 85 percent of inland search and rescue missions and disaster-relief support to local, state and national agencies as well as aerial reconnaissance for homeland security and remain continually postured to offer more.” Beyond CAP’s support to

achieve its homeland responsibilities for non-combat operations, the organization has been recognized for its efforts to inspire hundreds of thousands of cadets and K-12 students to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and training. “Civil Air Patrol’s increased exposure has a direct impact on attracting youth interest in STEM-based activities which are skills necessary to develop the innovative Airmen our Air Force needs,” said Chief of Staff General Mark A. Welsh III. “We proudly welcome the Air Force auxiliary by extending our badge of honor as Airmen.”

New website streamlines volunteering by 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey — U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa has received approval from the Air Force Personnel Center and Air Staff to pilot a new volunteer program website before it goes live Air Force wide. The new website application makes it simpler for active-duty members and civilians to post, search and log volunteer opportunities and hours in the local area by connecting volunteers with the organizations that seek them. “This program empowers volunteers to tailor their experience to the opportunities available in the Incirlik community,” said Angela Spatz, a 39th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant. “The web program will also allow the A&FRC the ability to recognize each registered individual’s time and efforts that support our base.” The web app, located at www. myairforcevolunteer.com was created in similar fashion as the Presidential Volunteer Service Award website with suggestions and feedback from users to make the site even better. The registration process was designed to be user friendly. There are two steps, including creating a username and password and validating the account through email. For all other processes on the website, easy to

follow instructions and how-to videos are provided under the “How-To” tab. Base clubs and organizations may also sign up with the site to post upcoming events that require volunteers. To register, military or private organizations should use a recognizable name and a reliable email address. After the account has been established, the account holder(s) can post as many events as needed and should include all relevant information for the events

such as what, when, where the event is and any main points of contact. Volunteers and units can also use the site to track total volunteer hours on a specific event and post internal events that are only viewable to users who “favorite” the group in their personal settings. “Feedback is crucial to this new website success,” said Shon Wagner, a 31st FSS community readiness specialist and website designer at Aviano Air Base,

Italy. “If users have an idea or something that will work better another way, click the link titled ‘Feedback’ and let me know. If users are being silent, but there are aspects that are bothering them, the website will start to lose its popularity and no one will use it. If ideas are being sent to me, I will try and implement them as soon as possible.” (Editor’s Note: Airman 1st Class Deana Heitzman contributed to this article.)

Football camp makes good impression by Lorrie J. Cappellino, RN, CNOR, M.S. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Traumatic Brain Injury and Rehabilitation Clinic nurse educator High school football players showed more than how to play football in a competitive manor; their focus on safety was evident in every session and every drill at this year’s Central European Football Camp hosted at Ansbach High School. The camp, consisting of 283 players from Germany, England, Italy, Spain, France and Austria, concentrated on fundamentals, conditioning, group work, position skills and drills. The coaching staff infused safety throughout and specifically emphasized concussion prevention. In such a high-energy sport, that emphasis can sometimes be overlooked, but that was not the case at this event. “Football is a lot like war. As the years have gone by, the equipment got better and better, and we kept hitting harder and harder,” said Camp Director Coach Marcus George. “We never adjusted our techniques, and we started seeing a ton more injuries.” George was among 47 Department of Defense Dependants Schools and European coaches who staffed the clinic along with HeadsUp Football

and USA Football guest coaches Michael Haynes and Chad Hester. Haynes, the son of Army and Air Force parents, is a former NFL defensive lineman who played for five seasons with the Chicago Bears. Hester has nearly 30 years of coaching experience at the youth and high school levels, has coached four undefeated seasons as a head coach and won six All-Central Texas championships.

The determination toward safety was obvious on the field and just as evident when the coaches spent late nights in a classroom with the HeadsUp team discussing concussion management, hydration and other important health and safety topics. A concussion, mild traumatic brain injury, is a head injury from a hit, blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain.

“There’s never been a safer time to play the game of football,” Hester said. This camp, in its 25th year, had returning coaches and players yearning to learn more about football fundamentals, competition and safety. Visit Luxembourg –

Photo by Reinhard Tiburzy / Shutterstock.com

Small yet beautiful

T

he Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (to quote it’s official name) is a landlocked country bordered by Belgium, Germany and France. It’s one of the smallest sovereign nations in Europe but this tiny but very beautiful country will surprise you with its varied scenery. Low mountain ranges set amidst nature reserves in the Ardennes, vineyards on the slopes along the Mosel, ‘the Land of the red rocks’ in the south, rock formations, cascades and crags in Mullerthal and a cosmopolitan and international capital, the City of Luxembourg. Luxembourg is perfect for weekend trips as it can be reached easily from the KMC via the Autobahn or in comfort by train. Outdoor Paradise Rambling along the Mullerthal Trail or across the plateaus of the Ardennes or hiking along easy to moderately difficult paths means enjoying panoramic views and discovering many castles and ruins along the way. Enjoy bike rides (or electric bikes for less effort) along gently sloping former railway embankments, with rail or bus connections in each case. You can take your bicycle on the train

and/or bus without any difficulty. Thanks to elaborate signposting, you can cross the entire country using safe cycling routes. With accommodation in “Bed & Bike” hotels, youth hostels and campsite stays can be geared to all cyclists (leisure, mountain bikers). Luxembourg offers you the chance to explore 575 km of waymarked and safe cycle paths and 5,000 km of signposted footpaths. The varied landscapes also provide the ideal setting for extensive golf courses, with stunning views and challenging grounds. Gourmet Delights – Star Performance Indulge in some of Luxembourg’s regional produce and enjoy a delicious gourmet treat. Luxembourg has the highest density of Michelin starred restaurants per capital, among them Restaurant Lea Linster, whose head chef (Lea Linster) is the first woman to have won the Bocuse d’Or prize. For something less punishing on the pocket, the city of Luxembourg is bustling with all sorts of pavement cafes and restaurants alive with a cosmopolitan European vibe. Or perhaps you might enjoy a cruise on the Luxembourg Mosel and savor a wide selection of wines from

the region while visiting the wine cellars. Wine festivals and culinary markets are high points of the good life in Luxembourg. Wellness, Health and Relaxation A major spa tradition does not rule out the very latest sauna landscapes and thermal baths supplied by mineral water springs at temperatures of 75.2F. Bad Mondorf, with its rich cultural program, has been a favorite gathering place for relaxation and regeneration since the 19th century. Anti-aging, anti-stress programs or simple wellness facilities promote health and relaxation. Culturally Exciting Culture plays an important role in Luxembourg. The country’s favorable position between the Latin and Germanic cultural areas has brought the biggest names in architecture together in Luxembourg, which prompted an avant-garde local scene. “Architectour.lu” is a guide that opens up modern architecture in Luxembourg. Among the contemporary museums that are worth a visit are MUDAM (Museum of Modern Art), Casino – Forum d’Art Contemporain’ and a ticket to the world premiere of an opera at the Grosse Stadttheater or the Philharmonie, is a must.

Page 29

Luxembourg has a fascinating cultural history with no fewer than three UNESCO World Heritage sites: the former fortress and old city of Luxembourg, the photograph exhibition “The Family of Man” by Edward Steichen in Clervaux castle and the Dancing Procession in Echternach. A stroll through the many smaller art galleries and flea markets will delight any ‘Art collector’s heart – and not just in the capital. American Military Cemetery The American Military Cemetery, which is 50.5 acres (20.4 ha) contains the remains of 5,076 American service members. On 22 occasions two brothers rest side-by-side in adjacent graves. Most of the interred died during the Battle of the Bulge which was fought nearby in winter 1944/1945. The 5,076 headstones are set in 9 plots of fine grass, lettered A to I. Separating the plots are two malls radiating from the memorial and two transverse paths. Two flagpoles overlook the grave area. Situated between the two flagpoles lies the grave of General George S. Patton Jr. Not far from the cemetery entrance stands the white stone chapel, set on a wide circular platform surrounded by woods. It is embellished with a sculpture in bronze and stone, a stained-glass window with the insignia of the five major U.S. commands that operated in the region and a mosaic ceiling. The cemetery is located in Hamm, Luxembourg City so is easy to find and visit to pay your respects. It is administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Under a U.S.-Luxembourg treaty signed in 1951 the U.S. government was granted free use in perpetuity of the land covered by the cemetery. Save with the LuxembourgCard The LuxembourgCard is a great option for saving money. The purchase of the pass offers singles, couples and families up to 5 people free or reduced admission to 55 different sights and provides free use of all rail and bus connections within the Grand Duchy. http://militaryingermany.com/ visit-luxembourg-small-yet-beautiful

A Mountain of Monkeys!

C

onfession: I used to work in a zoo (in high school). I would say I was their best employee, but the rest of the employees might disagree. Details aren’t important. The important part is that I worked at the zoo and spent early mornings opening the gift shop and listening to the animals wake up for breakfast. What were my favorite animals? They were the Francois langur monkeys, who carried

on each morning as if their sole job was to wake the rest of the animals from their slumber to announce a new day had started. This experience left me with a fondness for primates. So when a friend told me that there is a “monkey mountain” in France only two hours away from my house, I had to see it for myself. One cannot hear of a monkey mountain and NOT visit. (You’re planning your trip as you read aren’t you?) It is not a mountain made of monkeys (as the name might suggest), but rather a mountain dedicated to the care and habitation of the Barbary macaque species. Arriving The park of Mountain of Monkeys (La Montagne des Singes) itself is easy to get to and has lots of free parking. Upon entering, there are a few playgrounds where children can pretend they are monkeys themselves. There is also a self serve cafe with snacks, ice cream and wine for those of us who require a little liquid courage either before or after (or both) a monkey encounter.

After purchasing tickets, we followed a path to the entrance gate where an employee explained the rules of the park (in English, German or French). They are generally what you expect: don’t harass the wildlife and offer only the supplied popcorn with your hand fully extended. Also visitors are told not to put the popcorn in their pockets, because the monkeys will go in after it. There was also some talk of the minimal risk of monkeys taking your personal belongings. The guide continued to talk, but by that point I was busy imagining myself swarmed by hungry monkeys tearing at my clothes and pulling my hair. For the record, that didn’t happen. Monkey madness Inside the park a kind employee handed us a small handful of popcorn and mutters something about not feeding babies or holding food close to your body. I handed all of my popcorn to my husband. Better one of us be able to drive home (or to the hospital) I figured. But to my delight the visitors were like old hats to the monkeys. They sat perched on the timbers lining the pedestrian path and affably waited for a stranger with a (literal) handout. Everywhere we looked there were monkeys perched in trees, playing on the ground or “monkeying” around on signs and on water toys. Small children squealed with delight as they spotted monkeys behaving not unlike themselves and eating popcorn out of their hands.

Ticket information Hours and ticket prices for La Montagne des Singes are available on their website.

Beyond monkeys The path in the park is about half a mile and the whole experience lasts about an hour. However, if you’re making the two hour trek, there are some other attractions in the area that can help justify the drive. • Eagle Mountain is located adjacent to monkey mountain and offers bird of prey shows. The park was closed due to inclement weather when we went (it seems monkeys don’t mind the rain but eagles and owls just aren’t having it). • Walk around Kintzheim Castle ruins (by the Eagle sanctuary) and tour the museum inside. • Spend time walking the timber-house lined streets of Kintzheim and do some antique shopping and wine drinking. How to tet there Monkey Mountain is located at La Montagne des Singes, Wick, 67600 Kintzheim, France. It is a 2.5 hour drive south of Kaiserslautern. Author’s Profile: Kelly is a DOD wife, devoted dog-mom, a mediocre cook, a whiskey aficionado and an avid traveler who’s exploring the Kaiserslautern area with dog and husband in tow. — See more at: http:// militaryingermany.com/a-mountainof-monkeys#sthash.RMmhk19g.dpuf
