For many of us, Karlsruhe is a mostly just a familiar name on a blue Autobahn sign. From Kaiserslautern, we zoom past it heading south to the Alps. From Stuttgart, we wave hello while heading north to Heidelberg. Here’s a secret, though: even though Karlsruhe is not a city designed to attract tourists, it is a fantastic place to visit. Because in Karsruhe, you’ll find kind strangers, green space, and a lot of cool things to do.

COMMENTARY: Hicks underscores DOD’s commitment to suicide prevention

The Defense Department remains relentlessly committed to the health and welfare of the total force, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks said today as she recognized the people behind DOD’s suicide prevention efforts.

Providing supportive and protective environments is a top priority at the highest reaches of the Pentagon, Hicks said as she underscored the dedication of those who have worked tirelessly to “spread hope, address stigma and other barriers to care, and drive a healthier culture.”

“It takes devoted teams to tackle the difficult subject of suicide prevention,” she said. “Over the years, we’ve understood that we cannot go about this work with a one-sizefits-all approach. Suicide has no single root cause or solution. That’s why the department is taking a public health approach — because this problem requires a range of prevention methods and treatment options to get after it.”

Hicks joined several top officials — including Gilbert Cisneros, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness; Elizabeth B. Foster, executive director of the

Office of Force Resiliency; Jeffrey R. Register, director of Defense Human Resources Activity; and Liz Clark, director of the Defense Suicide Prevention Office — in recognizing several units that demonstrated innovation and excellence in suicide prevention during fiscal 2021-2022.

“Today’s recipients have

been working tirelessly to implement that approach,” Hicks said. “They’ve taken major steps to promote connectedness, belonging and community ... to find creative ways to promote new and available health care options.”

Those units receiving the recognition include U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz in Kaiserlautern;

Guam Army National Guard in Barrigada, Guam; Marine Aircraft Group 12 in Iwakuni, Japan; Naval Special Warfare U.S. Special Operations Command in San Diego; and Air Force Air Combat Command jointly with Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton and Newport News, Virginia.

“Our honorees’ work on suicide prevention has been more than conceptual,” Hicks said. “They’ve launched campaigns to get the word out on life-changing information. They’ve organized outreach events to increase awareness. They’ve helped match people to the community support systems that best suit their needs. And they’ve nurtured connectedness at every level — from individuals to the squadron, command, and battalion levels — to help save lives.

“These programs, and the people who implement and manage them, have made the fight against suicide a top priority,” she said.

In recognition of September as National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, DOD has launched its 2023-2024 annual campaign, titled “Connect to Protect: Support is within Reach.”

In his remarks during the recognition ceremony, Cisneros emphasized the importance of establishing healthy connections and relationships in suicide prevention.

“There is often a sense among the military community and among service members that they need to be strong and fully capable at all times,” he said. “They believe strength is enduring their lowest moments, and darkest thoughts alone. But nothing could be further from the truth.

“We recognize that asking for help is challenging, but we are making it easier to get help in the military community by creating connections through local programing,” he said. “We help by saying we are here for you. We help by creating supportive and protective environments. That is our goal and one which we must continue to strive towards.”

While stationed in the 48 contiguous states, service members, veterans and family members in crisis can seek help through the veterans/military crisis line by:

Those stationed outside of the U.S. can access the crisis line by:

• Calling 00800 1273 8255 or DSN 118 in Europe.

To access noncrisis support, service members and their immediate family members can connect with Military OneSource for free access to confidential counseling. Mental health and counseling services are also available through Tricare.

IRO kicks off National Suicide Prevention Month at Ramstein AB

The 86th Airlift Wing Integrated Resiliency Office hosted a kick-off event to begin National Suicide Prevention Month at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 7.

The observance month kicked off with a play called ‘Second Chances,’ which is designed to help service members and civilians understand the warning signs of self harm and what they can do to help.

“We set up this play as a way to give the base population a valuable lesson and do it in an entertaining way,” said Lashanda Palmer, 86th AW violence prevention integrator. “This play will help service members recognize the signs and red flags of self harm and what they can do to help.”

The event was an opportunity to highlight the resources available to help service members and their families and increase understanding of the effects of self harm and how individuals can help those in need.

“We often turn to the arts and humanities as a medium to portray

difficult topics such as suicide,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jamil Musa, 86th AW deputy commander. “Many of us have been touched by this subject and for those who have not this is a great way to sympathize with those who have.”

The actors in the play were U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force active duty members and helping agencies were also present during the event to answer questions.

“The true intended message to me is the classic saying of see something, say something,” Palmer said. “You may have people in your office that may be thinking about hurting themselves and we need an environment of connectedness and inclusivity. If we can have more of that there would probably be less suicides in the Air Force in my opinion.”

CASPER: Ghosting the competition

In a world where flexibility and adaptability are paramount to the success of the mission, the Cross Functional Airlift Support Personnel program introduces an elite team of Airmen to get the job done.

The CASPER program builds on the Agile Combat Employment and Multi-Capable Airmen concepts, ensuring any wing mission can still deploy successfully with minimal personnel and resources.

Airmen selected for CASPER undergo a six-month, self-paced training course covering various Air Force Specialty Codes such as Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape, aeromedical evacuation basics, loadmaster basics, drop zone certification, port operations, and C-130J Super Hercules aircraft egress. After completing their training, the Airmen are evaluated to become CASPER certified.

CASPER primarily collaborates with the 37th Airlift Squadron, 86th Operations Support Squadron, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, and 1st Combat Communications Squadron to ensure mission success.

“We primarily work with these groups to support contingency locations and airlift operations,” said U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Emile Giguere, the Ramstein ACE-MCA program manager. “ACE combines

proactive and reactive maneuver strategies to increase survivability and combat effectiveness while maintaining a small logistical footprint.”

While CASPER Airmen are trained on these special tasks that may be beyond their normal primary duties, they are still expected to perform their job.

“CASPER is not full time, your primary job comes first,” said Giguere. “At least 30 days out of a year you’re going to be dealing with training or missions.”

CASPER is only open to Airmen in the ranks of E-5 through E-8 and O-1 through O-3, and they must score 90 or above on their physical fitness test.

“We need continuously ready Airmen,” said Giguere. “In the event of a real-world threat, it is essential to have Airmen who have multicapable abilities and can support smaller contingency locations. CASPER ensures they are capable of executing a proper response, including the potential of securing airlift operations with limited manpower and equipment.”

The CASPER program has only 20 members right now, but the program managers’ goal is for a team of 50 active members.

U.S. Air Force Col. Sean Finnan, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot, performs low-altitude maneuvers over the coastlines of Greece, May 8. The low-altitude training in Greece was part of the Stolen Cerberus X joint training exercise and provided the 37th AS the opportunity to fly much lower than they are allowed to in Germany, allowing CASPER Airmen to further train their skillsets. Falcon Leap 2023

Military Cargo dropped from a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules lands on a drop zone located in Marnewaard, Netherlands, as a part of exercise Falcon Leap 2023, Sep. 5. The purpose of this phase of Falcon Leap is to demonstrate joint aerial tactical resupply capabilities. This is accomplished by conducting rigging operations with multi-national partners and controlling drop zones with 5th Quartermaster, 16th Special Troops Battalion and Dutch Pathfinder Company, 11th Air Maneuver Brigade. Falcon Leap 23 is a Royal Dutch Militaryled, multinational, joint technical airborne exercise designed to enhance interoperability of participating NATO airborne forces and aircrews in personnel and equipment parachuting operations in Arnhem, Netherlands, from Sep. 2-17. Falcon Leap is NATO’s largest technical airborne exercise which will also include ceremonies commemorating the 79th anniversary of Operation Market Garden.

Ramstein AB honorary commander program brings leaders together

Johannes Freundorfer, Polizeiinspektion Ludwigshafen 2, head of police inspection, has been involved with the 86th Civil Engineer Group since he was selected to be a part of the Ramstein AB honorary commander program in February 2022.

A participant of the honorary commander program is expected to be a leader and is an individual of outstanding character and integrity.

Johannes Freundorfer, 86th CEG honorary commander and a member of the local community, is no exception.

Candidates for the honorary commander program include numerous civilian leaders from the local community, including business owners, community organizers and public officials. They are chosen based on their dedication to the local community and their potential to contribute meaningfully to the program.

One of the most significant benefits of this program is the opportunity for local leaders and Ramstein leadership to gain a deeper understanding of each other’s daily operations and what it takes to be a leader in their separate communities.

“There is a cultural aspect that makes a difference, it is very interesting to see how decisions are made and what leadership means in different communities,” said Freundorfer. “It is very interesting to not only see the differences but the same values and the same goals we have despite our completely different backgrounds.”

The program helps honorary commanders and their assigned partners strengthen the bond between the base and the commu-

nity through the exchange of ideas and the increased understanding of each other’s capabilities.

The relationship between honorary commanders and military leaders goes beyond just professional development. It extends into personal connections, fostering friendships that transcends uniforms and titles. These relationships help break down stereotypes and build trust,

ultimately strengthening the military-community bond.

“I think the relationship that comes out of this experience can do a lot of good for the organization as Freundorfer helps me understand and therefore lead the two thirds of this organization that are local nationals,” said Col. Steve Thomas, 86th CEG commander. “Not only that, but he is a good resource, confidant and now a friend who helps me connect to the community off base.”

During the time that Col. Steve Thomas and Johannes Freundorfer have been working together, they have included one another in close celebrations such as Thomas’s Thanksgiving and Freundorfer’s 40th birthday, giving them the chance to experience the ways their communities celebrate.

“If you invest a little bit of your time you get so much more out of it,” said Freundorfer. “You learn about the life of another person

who comes from a totally different background.”

By bridging the gap between the military and civilian communities, this program not only strengthens national security but also enriches the lives of those involved. The bonds formed through this program are a testament to the power of collaboration and mutual understanding, reminding us all that we are stronger when we stand together.

Eight basic stress busters

The deadline for your project at work is tomorrow. The children are fighting and the milk is about to boil over. You’re tense, your shoulders and neck hurt and your head is pounding — welcome to the world of stress!

Find the time

Finding time to relax can be difficult, but it’s never too late to stop and take control. Pause a while and think about whether you suffer from any of these problems:

• Do you have trouble sleeping?

• Are you unusually irritable?

• Do you get headaches?

• Are you depressed?

• Do you have bouts of uncontrollable crying?

These are just few symptoms of stress. If you answered yes to any of them, you are probably suffering from some levels of stress.

Learning to balance the time you spend with others and the time you set aside for yourself will help you become happier and more productive. Here are a few suggestions that will help reduce your levels of stress:

1. Breathe

One of the best ways to combat stress is to take a moment and breathe deeply and slowly. The way you breathe can have a significant effect on how you feel. So when you are stressed, you can help yourself if you try to control your breathing pattern. Attempt to eliminate negative thoughts and energy about other people and situations, so that it does not affect you. Repeat the positive thought as you breathe and allow your face to reflect tranquility. The breath tends to be shallow or rapid when body and mind are in ‘guarding state’ under stress or pain. Controlling the breath so that it is

slower and deeper, reduces the amount of electrical energy in the body. This gives you the chance to ‘calm down.’ Deep breathing can also relieve headaches and backaches.

2. Exercise

Another great way to deal with stress is to start an exercise program. Aerobic exercise strengthens your heart and lungs and improves your overall use of oxygen. Activities such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling and swimming are excellent aerobic type exercises.

3. Move

Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body — climb stairs, walk your dog, toss balls with friends and chase your children. Think ‘move’ in small increments of time.

4. Quit

Studies have shown smoking to be harmful to health, so give up those cigarettes… one at a time.

5. Music

Listen to soothing music, which calms you down when you are stressed out. Spend some leisure time with family or friends who you enjoy being with or watch a funny movie with them.

6. Delay

Think twice and keep quiet before getting aggravated and losing your temper.

7. Do something

Spend time doing something you like.

No matter how busy you are, steal some moments for your hobbies. How about adopting a pet? Watching a crawler fish aquarium is one of the coolest stress busters. How about growing a plant of your choice?

8. Think positive

Think positive, be positive. There is a definite connection between being happy and having a cheerful outlook on life.

Live life better

They say “an empty mind is a devil’s workshop.” So, keep yourself busy but not over-exerted to the point of being stressed out. You may not be able to avoid all the stress in your life, but can certainly learn to live with less.

at the 6th Annual Memorial Ceremony 9/11

Service members and civilians participate in a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 11. People from around the Kaiserslautern Military Community walked around the base golf course where they saw different memorials and stories of heroic actions as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks.

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 86th Security Forces Squadron and U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, salute while the National Anthem plays at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 11. Approximately 200 service members and civilians from around the Kaiserslautern Military Community attended the 6th Annual Memorial Ceremony Ruck March as a way to pay homage to those who were killed during the 9/11 attacks and those who died while conducting rescue operations.

2021 Honda Passport EX-L

Though Karlsruhe is a good-sized city (around 300,000 people), it doesn’t have many quaint little center-city streets or half-timbered buildings. This is because most of the inner city was reduced to rubble during World War II. Fortunately, rebuilding was done with great care.

If you’re considering a trip, here are five places to start:

1. Not just any old zoo

Karlsruhe zoo is more than just a zoo. Officially called the ‘Zoological City Gardens,’ the place is an oasis in the middle of the city. The animals are well-cared for, and fascinating: You can find elephants, birds, reptiles, and snow leopards.

The best part, though? There are so many other things to do a the Zoological City Gardens. There are playgrounds and eateries. And there are gardens. The park is the biggest one in Karlsruhe, and boasts hundreds of different types of trees. It even has a highly regarded Japanese Garden.

For families, the Zoological City Gardens are a perfect place for a day trip. You can arrive, get overstimulated, find your happy place again, and then head back home.

2. Karlsruhe Palace

Even though Karlsruhe might not be a typical tourist destination, it does have one seriously cool touristy thing: Karlsruhe

Palace. The building itself is excellent — 18th century stately architecture, a distinctive color of yellow, home to the lovely Baden State Museum.

It’s the building’s location, however, that is so interesting. The palace is the epicenter of the city, almost literally. It sits at the hub of 32 different avenues that come toward it. Seen from above (or on a map), the castle gardens fan out behind the palace like, well, a giant fan. It’s almost not a joke to say that all roads in Karlsruhe lead to the palace.

3. ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe’s Center for Art and Media (or ZKM – Zentrum für Kunst und Medien)

is brilliant. First of all, it’s very German, in that it does a fabulous job of blending both the old and the new. The fantastically modern-in-an-antique-context museum building attests to this.

The exhibitions themselves are also spot-on. The ZKM does a fantastic job of incorporating film, photography, motion, and digital media into an experience that also includes painting and sculpture. Well worth a visit, the ZKM is open Wednesday through Sunday.

4. Karlsruhe Botanical Garden

Karslruhe’s reputation as a green city is well established. It has hundreds of acres

of green space and dozens of parks. If you’re looking for the best patch of green in the city, though, the Karlsruhe Botanical Garden might just be it.

Naturally, the garden is filled with plants, trees, fountains, and stately buildings that date from its founding in the 18th century. The overall experience is both energizing and relaxing. Sometimes, it’s the little things at the botanical garden that are the most amazing: For instance, the place has a palm tree that’s over 300 years old (it’s a big deal to be an old tropical tree in Germany!) and a chestnut tree with a fascinating history of surviving WWII.

5. Pools, saunas, and thermal baths

Karlsruhe is also a city that believes in the power of getting in the water (which isn’t surprising, considering that Baden Baden is just down the road). If you like to swim or soak, Karlsruhe has you covered.

There are several swimming pools that are perfect for families, including the wonderful Europabad. The city also offers the famous Vierordtbad Baths, which have been around for more than a century. It’s a classic European spa, in the best sense.

Getting there

By car, Karlsruhe is 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kaiserslautern, 1.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and an hour from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train information.

ABC IN KMC: Humanist Hildegard

As saints go, it is not often that a woman is honored. In this article we will talk about Hildegard of Bingen. Bingen is a picturesque town not far from the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Hildegard of Bingen was born as the last of ten children, about 1098 from the family of Bermersheim, a lower nobility family. She was a weak and sickly child, and, in her autobiography, she stated that she experienced “visions” from early childhood onward.

On the other hand, she grew to become a very emancipated woman of the time and is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.

It might have been because of her visions that her parents offered her as an oblate to the Benedictine monastery at Disibodenberg, which is located in the Palatinate Forest today.

Though it is unknown of her exact age at the time, either 8 or 13, she took her vows on Nov. 1, 1112, by Bishop Otto of Bamberg.

During her time in the monastery, she was inspired by the herb garden and quickly acquired broad knowledge about herbs and their medicinal effects. She soon

became a writer, composer and philosopher, an unusual skill at the time, as only few women were educated and able to read or write.

At an early age she became well-known as a mystic, visionary and medicinal writer and practitioner, and honored by the pope himself.

By 1136 her convent elected her as mother superior and in 1150 she founded her own monastery in Rupertsberg near Bingen, to be followed by the second convent Eibingen in 1165. There she wrote theological, botanical, medicinal works as well as letters, hymns and antiphons for the liturgy. There are more surviving chants by Hildegard than by any other composer from the Middle Ages and she is one of the few to have written both the music and the words.

Although she always highly respected and was true to her vows, Hildegard came to be known as being rather liberal and she enjoyed traveling throughout the country. Though this information cannot be confirmed, it is said that she also visited Kaiserslautern on various occasions.

Given the overall status of women during the early Middle Ages, this remarkable woman was highly respected by prestigious personalities in politics and the church. She engaged in frequent correspondence with kings, popes, the archbishops of Trier, Salzburg

and Mainz. One of her favorite “pen pals” was none other than Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. Furthermore, other abbesses and the simple folk turned to her for advice on medicinal questions or spiritual matters.

Regional calendars of the Roman Catholic church have listed her as a saint for centuries, and May 10, 2012, Pope Benedict extended the veneration of Saint Hildegard to the entire Catholic church and named her Doctor of the Church in October of the same year in recognition of her sacred life and teachings.

St. Hildegard died September 1179, at the surprisingly old age of eighty-one, given her poor health as a child. She also appears in the calendar of saints in various Anglican churches, such as the Church of England, and is commemorated Sep. 17 each year.

Whether her long life is attributed to her expert knowledge of herbs or her strong belief, she is renowned worldwide for her humanistic works and openminded attitude.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz highlights Marcos Yracheta for Service Culture Spotlight!

Calling La Puente, California, his hometown, Marcos serves as a recreation assistant for Pulaski Outdoor Recreation.

His primary duties include managing the entire fleet of outdoor recreation’s NAF vehicles by maintaining dispatches, registrations and fuel cards, while ensuring all maintenance is up-to-date.

Marcos also serves as the lead hunting, fishing and sport shooting instructor for fishing in Germany. He teaches and facilitates the German fishing licensing and plans each fishing trip. He maintains the Pulaski Park complex and ensures facilities are spotless and ready for use by the Rheinland-Pfalz community. Marcos also promotes programs through active marketing and outreach at the Ramstein BX and other key hubs in the Kaiserslautern area.

Marcos has been working for the garrison for 22 years and he had been on active-duty status for 20 years.

“I love making sure every vehicle is ready to go on trips. I also enjoy promoting all the trips that Outdoor Recreation has. Teaching people about fishing in Germany and helping them out in getting the right equipment is a great passion of mine.”
