Pence addressed current world events such as negotiations with Turkey and the Airmen’s role at Ramstein in the European theater. “I’m proud to report that, thanks to the president’s strong leadership, the United States and Turkey have agreed to a cease-fire in Syria,” Pence said. “I know all of you here at Ramstein Air Base have been vital to our mission in that region for years.” Pence then elaborated on the work of Airmen assigned to the World’s Best Wing and expressed his gratitude for their dedication. “You make it possible to move troops and supplies to wherever they need to be in the world — 24/7, See VICE PRESIDENT, Page 2

VICE PRESIDENT from Page 1 365 days a year,” Pence said. “Ramstein Air Base is the heart of the American military on the European continent, and the free world is safer because of all of you.” At the conclusion of his address, Pence reminded all in attendance that members of the U.S. military do not have to carry the burden of security and freedom by themselves. “As you serve here, I want to assure you that wherever you are called to serve — wherever you are deployed — you will carry with you the strength and pride of the American people, and the confidence of your commander in chief,” Pence said. “Progress that we made today is directly owing to work all of you have labored so nobly to advance here.” FAMILY AFFAIR from Page 1 To better prepare spouses and families for the drastic changes that come along with becoming a “shirt,” the First Sergeant Spouses Symposium provided education and insight into the job and responsibilities of a first sergeant. There is a new hiring process for first sergeants. In the past, “shirts” were only nominated. The new process will permit a nomination process, as well as allow qualified Airmen to volunteer, in the hopes of acquiring exceptionally motivated Airmen. “The job of a first sergeant will be the most rewarding job imaginable, but it also will come with long hours, phone calls around the clock, high levels of stress and emo-

tional fatigue,” said Master Sgt. Devin O’Donnell, 86th Communication Maintenance Squadron first sergeant. With a first sergeant being on-call 24 hours a day, a “shirt’s” spouse has to understand the roles, responsibilities and expectations of their partner’s job to maintain a stable home environment. “The challenges that first sergeant spouses face are many of the same that their military counterpart is facing,” said O’Donnell. “Whether it be unexpected calls that take their spouse away from the family during the holidays or being there to support their spouse when they come home after dealing with extremely emotional situations, being a first sergeant is a family affair.” The FSC is scheduled to

host a first sergeant spouse symposium twice a year. “To most military members, the responsibilities that come along with becoming a first sergeant are a drastic change from their pre-

vious Air Force Specialty Code, in terms of stress and scope of responsibility,” said O’Donnell. “These changes will undoubtedly have a huge impact on not only the military member but their fami-

lies as well. We encourage spouses to attend these events to give an opportunity to get some insight into the job and get answers to any questions that they may have.”

Spouses of first sergeant candidates write down concerns about their partner’s possible new roles during a First Sergeant Spouses Symposium on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 18. The First Sergeant Spouses Symposium educates and provides insight into the role to help prepare families for this responsibility.

Airlifter of the Week: A1C Kayla T. Jerido, 86th CES by Senior Airman Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

U.S. Air Force Col. Matt S. Husemann, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, poses for a photo with Airman 1st Class Kayla T. Jerido, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron fire protection journeyman, to recognize her as the Airlifter of the Week at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 18. Jerido received the award after displaying strong leadership in several different roles within the fire station. Perhaps most notably was Jerido’s ability to lead a fire station immersion tour for 20 NATO partner firefighters from Lithuania, Romania and Ukraine.

Swatting cyber awareness by 86th Communications Squadron “How could this happen to me? What is going on? How is this even possible? Why me out of everyone else? Where did they get it from?” These are the questions one would ask when they are a victim of “swatting.” Swatting is widely known by the gaming community but isn’t limited to gaming. It has caused significant financial burden, unnecessary fear, and unfortunate deaths. Swatting is the action or practice of making a hoax call to the emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address. Most commonly known by gamers and streamers, but doxing is, “the act of obtaining and broadcasting the address and details of an individual with intent to harass or endanger them,” and is linked to swatting. Techniques used to deceive local authorities are caller ID spoofing, social engineering, TTY (teletypewriter), prank calls, and phone breaking techniques.

Swatters can obtain information through IP addresses, unsecure Wi-Fi, live streams, phishing, website spoofing, click-jacking, etc. In 2014 there was a notorious swatter from Canada that went by the name “Obnoxious.” He would surf the website Twitch, which is a platform where you can watch people play video games, and find his victims. Over time he would continually harass his victims online, and even called in bomb threats on schools of some. Oftentimes he would do something simple like a Distributed Denial of Service attack which essentially slows your internet connection to a crawl by overloading your network with authentication requests. This is still illegal, but relatively harmless in the end. When Obnoxious focused his attention on someone, he would sent the full force of a SWAT team to their home to prevent a fictitious crime from happening. In reality the person getting swatted is just playing a video game doing

nothing wrong. The individual known as Obnoxious was later arrested and identified as a 16-year-old boy that was charged with 46 counts of criminal harassment, public mischief, and extorsion. He was found guilty of 23 of these charges. He was released from prison in March 2017 after he turned 18. In some cases, this has proven to cause serious physical harm. On Jan. 15, 2015 in Oklahoma, dispatchers received a 911 call from James Edward Holly who posed as Dallas Horton and told the dispatchers that he had placed a bomb in a local preschool. The local and county police departments forced entry into the real Mr. Horton’s home where he thought his home was being broken into where he shot an officer, not knowing what was going on. Upon further investigation the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation became aware that the calls did not originate from Mr. Horton’s home. Later on, James Edward Holly came forward to confess to the investigators that he was

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Kayla T. Jerido, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron fire protection journeyman, received the honor of being Airlifter of the Week, Oct. 18 on Ramstein Air Base. Jerido, a Southampton, New York native, was pivotal in the demonstration of critical Aircraft Rescue Firefighting tactics, ensuring continuity of safety for aircraft and aircrew while operating in and around partner nation airspace and ensuring these nations meet International Civil Aviation Organization requirements. Included in her list of recent accomplishments, Jerido led a fire station immersion for the one that made the calls because he was angry with Horton. Holly was arrested on a complaint of making a false bomb threat, and it is unclear whether or not Horton will face charges for shooting an officer. All this is pretty scary, and rightfully so. How can you protect yourself from these swatting attempts? Many cities now have a program that you can opt-into a registry where it will gather your information and inform officers to be cautious if they receive a threatening call from that phone number. Other laws that were passed made the originating caller responsible for the damages that were caused by the police force entering the home and anything that happens inside the house. A cheaper way to protect yourself is by using a Virtual Private Network. That way when someone tries to get your location from your IP address it will tell the hacker that you are in a different location than you actually are. Another simple and effective way to minimize your exposure online, not only in the video game world but also in all of your

20 NATO partner firefighters from Lithuania, Romania and Ukraine. She assisted with live-fire evaluations as part of a one week formal training curriculum taught by 435th Construction and Training Squadron cadre, and also led the station immersion for a spouse tour showcasing the fire department to 17 visiting spouses. In her free time, Jerido enjoys reading, writing and singing. Jerido said she couldn’t be more grateful for the recognition and gives credit to her supervisors and mentors for this achievement. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through their hard work and dedication, make the 86th Airlift Wing the “World’s Best Wing.” internet usage, is to never share your personal information. All of these steps are very simple yet highly effective ways to ensure that you and your family are being #CyberSafe! In conclusion, swatting can happen to anyone at any time and can be emotionally and physically damaging for the victim. Using these simple practices is a safe and cheap deterrent against the threat. Don’t be a victim due to negligence. The cost of protecting your network is nothing compared to the cost of losing a loved one or damages to your home. Secure and protect your home network, research your vulnerabilities, defend your home, and enjoy a safe cyber environment. Always be sure to Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. Resilience is not an individual sport: Wounded Warrior promotes connectedness

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Laurel “Buff” Burkel, Air Force Wounded Warrior Program ambassador, speaks to the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 18. Burkel shared her story of recovery and overcoming the obstacles she faced after surviving a helicopter crash on Oct. 11, 2015, in Afghanistan.

Story & photos by Airman 1st Class John R. Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Four years after narrowly surviving a helicopter crash, retired U.S. Air Force Col. Laurel “Buff ” Burkel returned to Germany to share her story with members of the 86th Airlift Wing at the Hercules Theater, Oct. 18. An audience of 160 listened intently as Burkel recounted her recovery and the many obstacles she faced after the Royal Air Force Puma helicopter she was in went down over Afghanistan Oct. 11, 2015. The accident left her with a broken neck and the loss of five team members, including U.S. Air Force Maj. Phyllis Pelky and Master Sgt. Greg Kuhse. After the accident, Burkel was transported by a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, to receive specialized medical care.

“Four years ago I was here,” said Burkel. “I was sitting there with a collar on so I literally would not die, waiting to have surgery to have a halo put on my head on the following Tuesday. Coming back at this time of year, in particular, is even more powerful for me.” Burkel’s path to recovery was long and arduous, but her determination and the support of family, friends, and fellow Airmen around her gave her the strength she needed to make a full recovery and return to flying status. A later testament to her successful recovery was the climb that she and her close friends made to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to celebrate her retirement from the Air Force. “There are a lot of people that are part of my story from the beginning of it,” said Burkel. “And the reason I’m literally here today is because of all of those connections that I have. It’s important. Resilience — and that’s a lot of what we

have been talking about in the Air Force over the last few months — is not an individual sport.” Burkel stressed the importance of connectedness and helping each other to be resilient in the face of adversity. In her time of need, much of the help Burkel received was through the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program. The mission of the AFW2 is to provide well-coordinated, personalized support and advocacy to each wounded, ill, and injured service member, as well as their families and caregivers. “She’s not afraid to reach out to somebody, and we shouldn’t be either,” said Senior Master Sgt. David Maurice, U.S. Air Forces in Europe Intelligence functional manager, who has known Burkel for the last 19 years. The two met while part of the same airlift squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. “Even when you think you’re okay, there might be times where you’re hurting afterwards. Keep reaching out.”

As an Ambassador for the AFW2, Burkel said she learned how to tell her story and help other Airmen to tell their stories in an effort to raise awareness that the program exists, inspire others to get the help they may need, and to understand the support that is available to them. “It’s for us Airmen: civilians, active duty, Guard, and Reserve. It’s for us to take care of each other,” said Burkel. Burkel said one of the main things she wants everyone to take away from her story is that “resilience is not an individual sport.” “Be there for each other,” said Burkel. “Regardless of rank. Regardless of position. Know each other well enough to be there for each other; to celebrate the good, and weather the bad.” For more information about the AFW2 and the resources they provide, call 800-581-9437 or visit: www. woundedwarrior.af.mil.

Immediately, AOC Airmen started to build a mission — REACH 797 — to help save this one Soldier whose survival was in question after being critically wounded in a blast. Within the first hours of the Soldier’s arrival to Craig Joint Theater Hospital at Bagram Airfield, medical teams administered multiple blood transfusions, and a lead surgeon determined the Soldier was in need of a special team from the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. To form this team, the 455th Expeditionary Medical Group worked in concert with the En-Route Patient Staging System, known as ERPSS. This flight comes from a specialized section in the hospital with personnel who are experts in patient movement and coordinate their transport out of the area to receive more specialized care. During those critical days following the injury, the surgical services team at Bagram performed multiple lifesaving

and stabilizing surgeries. Additionally, a walking blood bank was initiated and over 100 Soldiers lined up to donate within 15 minutes of the call to ensure a sufficient supply of blood. “Their quick work led to the patient being taken to a higher echelon of care in under 48 hours,” said Maj. Lisa Haik, 455th ERPSS Flight commander. “Overall, the actions of all involved represent just a fraction of what the CJTH can provide to our warriors.” Twenty-four hours later, after being diverted from another mission, a Dover Air Force Base C-17 Globemaster III and its crew arrived at Bagram and immediately went into crew rest in preparation to fly a non-stop, 8,000mile flight to San Antonio. “We had to load up a very complex flight plan into the software on the aircraft,” said Maj. Dan Kudlacz, REACH 797 C-17 pilot and aircraft commander from Dover’s 436th Airlift Wing. “Couple that with the fact that we were flying into a combat zone, carrying 18 additional medical crew members, and transporting a critical patient whose injuries require a cabin altitude restriction. You can begin to see that there was a lot to manage from alert to liftoff.” The next day, the Soldier was evacuated out of Afghanistan on the C-17 for the long journey home and was treated by AE and Critical Care Air Transport Team, or CCATT, Airmen from the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight, alongside an Extracorporeal Membrane

Oxygenation or ECMO team from the 59th Medical Wing. “There were so many moving parts to this mission that we knew we had to get every aspect 100 percent correct the first time,” said Kudlacz. “Should one thing have fallen out of line during the flight, it could have … impacted this Soldier’s life, which is something that weighed heavily on all of us when we received notification of this mission.” Just hours into the flight from Bagram, a MacDill KC-135 Stratotanker crew was preparing for a routine mission from the tarmac at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, Great Britain, when they got the call to rendezvous with and offload more than 24,000 gallons of fuel to keep a lifesaving C-17 airborne during its nonstop AE journey from Afghanistan to Texas. “MacDill Airmen fueled the hands that heal during this critical mission,” said Col. Stephen Snelson, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. “Days where we can flex to support our joint teammates reminds us why we signed up to serve in the first place.” As the topped-off C-17 pulled away from the KC-135 in the skies over Europe, a second MacDill tanker crew, near Bangor, Maine, was diverted to complete the air bridge to Texas. Although refueling during an AE flight is uncommon due to the turbulence it can cause, it was necessary to ensure the Soldier reached specialized care in the United States as quickly as possible.

“This mission involved a tremendous amount of teamwork; between the skill of the aircrews operating under exhausting conditions, to our AOC planners who determined aircraft and aircrew availability, provided mission support and tailored specialized AE care en route, and the medical professionals who provided unrivaled critical care,” said Brig. Gen. Jimmy Canlas, 618th AOC commander. “With a Soldier’s life on the line, these Airmen worked 24/7, across multiple time zones, to pull together all the pieces and ensure this Soldier made it home.” Following the non-stop, 20-hour journey, the injured Soldier reached Kelly Field, Texas. From there, he was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center to continue receiving life-saving care, and reunite with his family. “Everyone working around the clock to safely bring our patriots home is awe-inspiring,” said Snelson. “This mission was a demonstration of the promises we make to care for those who serve.” The Soldier, whose name is being withheld due to personal and family privacy, is currently receiving intensive care in San Antonio, Texas. “The priority our military places on saving the lives of its service members is unparalleled,” said Lt. Col. Scott King, CCATT Chief. “REACH 797 demonstrates that for those who go into harm’s way, no expense or effort will be spared to bring them home to their families and loved ones.”

Knowing your wellness status

What exactly is wellness? Wellness is the process of becoming aware, making choices that support you toward a healthy and fulfilling life. It’s not just about being free of illness, it is a dynamic process and involves growth, change and the evolution of self.

Benefits of knowing your wellness status When you are aware of your wellness status, you will be better equipped to make a plan to achieve your health and wellness goals. Everything we do is related to our wellbeing. Knowing your status will help you face challenges head on.

It’s another work day, your alarm goes off and you literally drag yourself out of bed. You feel listless and tired. You are constantly feeling like you simply need more energy. If it’s a Monday, some people call it the Monday blues; however you seem to have the same feeling every day. So what’s up with that? As you reflect, you recognize your diet and exercise regimen has not been the best.

Types of hacks, hackers by 86th Communications Squadron The world of cyber is ever changing and shaping. Nowadays it is more important than ever to secure and protect your cellphone, laptop, computer, and any smart device you have. The internet was created in the 1960s and was released for more public use in the 1980s. Believe it or not the first hack actually came in 1969 while computers were still housed in giant, locked, temperature controlled rooms. The team of two created shortcuts and rules to run on the computers and that “hack” created the operating system still used today called UNIX (plaza.uf.edu). Today, however, hacking isn’t always as innocent as two co-workers creating shortcuts on the computer. The internet has advanced significantly since those days, and with that the attacks have become far more complex and serious. There are groups and individuals dedicated to hacking governments, companies, and high-profile individuals. There are three different main types of hackers: white hat, grey hat,

and black hat hackers. White hat hackers are the ones that a large business would hire to see where their network is vulnerable. The company is aware that they are being hacked, and the hacker causes no data loss or damage to the network. They just show where the vulnerabilities are. A grey hat hacker is someone that acts like a black hat hacker by going in illegally, but they do not cause any damage or data loss. Often, they reach out to the company to offer to fix the vulnerabilities for a fee. A black hat hacker is someone that goes in illegally and attempts to cause data loss, crash networks, or alter the way a website functions. You might even be surprised who some of the most famous and infamous hackers were. John McAfee, the creator of the antivirus software that DOD members can use for free, was charged with hacking into the Belizean government and uncovering a huge scandal covering up bribes, drugs, corruption, and even murders. He had to go into hiding for many years following that

Can you relate? Would you like to shift your perspective and eliminate those work blues? Knowing your wellness status could be the first step in helping regain your vitality.

How can you identify your wellness status? Landstuhl’s Army Wellness Center offers a Health Assessment Review measuring general health, risk stratification and biometric screening. The HAR is a great first step in determining where you are on your wellness journey. It allows you to identify if you are at risk for any diseases and possible changes to mitigate those risks. The HAR appointment is 60 minutes long and consists of interacting with a highly-trained health educator to determine your wellness goals and needs. The health educator will go over your dietary, exercise and sleep habits, discuss possible stressors and make some helpful recommendations on the next steps in your journey. Many of our clients have seen great improvements by following those suggestions.

data breach, but several years later he resurfaced when he volunteered to help the FBI. Another surprising name is Stephen Wozniak, one of the original founders of Apple. He created a device while they were in college to bypass the charges that occurred when you would make a long-distance phone call. Both of those hacks were on a relatively small scale. WannaCry is a ransomware attack that affected computers in the US, UK, China, and Russia, along with 146 other countries. Ransomware is exactly like it sounds; it is a program that holds your computer data “ransom” until you pay the hackers. Well, this attack affected over 200,000 computers worldwide, and has been called, “the most prolific cyberattacks ever around the globe” (CNET). Another recent data breach that you might have heard of is the one that happened to Equifax. In September 2017, the credit monitoring company Equifax had 147 million peoples’ information get compromised. That information consisted of home addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, etc. To own up to their mistake they set aside

575 million dollars to provide credit monitoring and protection. For many people this was a terrifying time because their whole life could change if someone decided to open a credit card in their name or take out a loan. In conclusion, there are many kinds of hackers, some hack legally to assist companies, but oftentimes they are out for attention, financial gain, or to cause mayhem. There have been many hacks throughout the lifetime of the internet, and they will only become more complex. The best way to keep your information safe is to practice safe cybersecurity measures. Limit the information you put online, use websites that begin with the prefix “https,” and use a VPN as often as you can to decrease your digital footprint. https://www.le-vpn.com/infamoushackers-internet/ http://plaza.ufl.edu/ysmgator/projects/ project2/history.html https://www.cnet.com/news/wannacrywannacrypt-uiwix-ransomwareeverything-you-need-to-know/ https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/ blog/2019/07/equifax-data-breachsettlement-what-you-should-know

Last to serve: Pharmacy staff make lasting impressions in patient care Story & photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center It’s the last stop before going home, back to work or school for many beneficiaries who come to the hospital for medical attention. But the pharmacy is far from a take-a-number operation keeping you from the rest of your day. Since the early use of herbal medicine to three-dimensional printed pills, pharmacists have worked to help heal the human body for centuries. Pharmacy staff behind counters and windows not only help patients get better, they help save lives. “It was always interesting to me that a little pill can do so much to a person. That was a starting point where I wanted to learn more about medicine,” said U.S. Army Spc. Richard Martinez, a pharmacy technician at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Inpatient Pharmacy. “I enlisted in the Army for [the pharmacy technician military occupational specialty] and I love it, and enjoy it more than I thought I would.” Before enlisting in the Army, Martinez went to school for forensic science and started working as a forensic autopsy technician at a mortuary. While performing autopsies he was fascinated by medicinal effects on the body, so he searched for an opportunity to learn more. “It spans so many levels beyond handing out medications to a patient,” said Martinez, a native of Apopka, Florida. Pharmacy technicians may also deliver anesthesia to operating rooms, injectable medications which can paralyze a person, and adhere to sterile techniques to avoid compromising medication. “It’s interesting how modern medicine can bring you up, drop you down, or keep you steady. I think it’s pretty neat.” Pharmacists and technicians are celebrated annually every third week of October during National Pharmacy Week, an observance which allows organizations to acknowledge the contributions of pharmacy staff in health care settings. As an Army pharmacist, Capt. Adam Szabat says something about military pharmacies that sets them apart from their civilian counterparts — pride. “There are pros, cons and similarities as well,” said Szabat, officer in charge of LRMC’s Inpatient Pharmacy. “While equipment may be about the same, I notice people are very happy to work at LRMC or whatever [military treatment facility] they came from.” Szabat, a Pittsburgh native, found

his calling as a pharmacist after an opportunity in high school to observe a friend’s pharmacist mother at a local hospital. Szabat later realized another passion — to serve in the Army as a pharmacist. After six years of retail pharmacy experience, he felt obligated to serve his country. “I always had a passion for helping people,” said Szabat. “I saw what [my friend’s mom] did on a day-to-day basis and it was something that interested me. [It was] a lot of chemistry, learning about medications and how they work in the body.” One of the greatest joys both Soldiers claimed is improving patients’ quality of life. “I never thought I’d be helping patients’ lives as a pharmacy tech,” said Martinez. “[Pharmacy operations] are very important because we make the medication that gets them through surgery, we mix the medications used in chemotherapy, and we’re helping cancer patients get to remission. Technicians have to be proficient to ensure patient safety. “The pharmacy is the last place for patients, and we make sure to send them home better, and happier,” said Martinez.

LRMC combatives bolsters Soldier lethality Story & photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center The deep thumps of the human body, the grunts of discomfort and the exhaustion of combat are all components of the Army’s Combatives Program, a handto-hand combat program which aims to instill the Army’s Warrior Ethos and bridge the gap between physical training and tactics. A recent open-mat tournament tested fighting skills at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, where over 20 U.S. military competitors from the Kaiserslautern Military Community vied for top place. The competition not only offered a chance to clash but also a venue to learn. “It’s not just something we do for fun, it has real applications when it comes to the fighting force,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Mason Idom, a platoon sergeant and certified combatives master trainer with the Medical Transient Detachment at LRMC. “It works completely different portions of your body than traditional physical training, and gives competitors a chance to showcase their skills.” The tournament, open to militaryaffiliated personnel ages 18 and older, offered opportunities to practice and refine grappling skills against others, and boost camaraderie and esprit de corps between service members in an organized atmosphere. “It’s open to everyone because we know there are some mixed martial

arts programs out there and we know there are Soldiers and Airmen who may use the program as part of their physical fitness program,” said Idom. “Competitors are in a controlled environment [at the tournament]. There are instructors always watching for signs to stop the fight.” Competitors were organized into categories based on gender and weight classes. Finishing second in her class was U.S. Army Spc. Fenny Descuatan, an operating room specialist at LRMC’s Sterile Processing Division, who previously had no combatives or martial arts experience but was prepared through MTD’s Combatives Courses weeks prior to the tournament. “It’s only my third week involved in

combatives,” said Descuatan. “It’s really good conditioning and you gain a lot of experience. In the tournament you get competitors from everywhere, not just your unit, so we get to absorb their moves and skills. I think everyone should do combatives.” While certification in the Army Combatives Program isn’t required for all Soldiers, practicing and engaging in combatives under trained supervision is highly encouraged as part of regular physical training programs. “Command teams are sometimes hesitant to allow Soldiers to participate because they worry the training may result in injury and put them out of the fight,” said Idom. “In reality the Army sees more injuries from football and

October 25, 2019 basketball than combatives or MMA training.” To prepare participants for the tournaments, Idom instructs them in basic and tactical combatives courses, sometimes referred to as Level I and II combatives training. Since last year, LRMC’s MTD Company has certified over 300 Soldiers and Airmen in the courses. For U.S. Army Spc. Michael Willingham, the pre-tournament courses presented an opportunity to refresh and improve his basic combatives training. His performance and learning throughout the course encouraged Willingham to participate in the tournament where he placed second in the heavy weight class. “I wanted to have a physical challenge, improve hand-to-hand combat skills and techniques,” said Willingham, a health care specialist at LRMC’s Internal Medicine Clinic. “Mentally, it’s one of the tougher things I’ve been through. It pushes your mind in ways you couldn’t even think of. I’m basically to the point of exhaustion every day but still have to perform.” According to the U.S. Army Combatives School, part of the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, the Army Combatives Program enhances unit combat readiness by building Soldiers’ personal courage, confidence, and resiliency as well as their situational responsiveness to close-quarters threats in the operational environment.

On Sunday, RamsteinMiesenbach will also hold its annual Wendelinus market. The advertising association Ramstein has been sponsoring the market for 34 years. The history of the Wendelinus market began in the 18th century, more than 300 years ago, when most village residents were farmers, and an epidemic threatened Ramstein’s cattle. The farmers started praying to Saint Wendelinus, a hermit and abbot, asking for help to avoid contagious diseases. Since then, Ramstein-Miesenbach commemorates Saint Wendelinus every year. The first commemoration took place on a Monday in 1710. Due to bad weather the past two years, the organizers decided to hold Wendelinus market only one day this year. Approximately 100 booths fill the center of town and local stores will also be open. Model railway fans are invited to attend the model railways exhibition and exchange in the Congress Center Ramstein. Local specialties and drinks will be offered to the visitors in the large fest tent. For more information visit: www.oktoberfest-ramstein.de. KAISERSLAUTERN

A journey to recovery: An invisible wounds story by Invisible Wounds Initiative Every Airman’s deployment experience is different. For some, deployments are exhilarating, while for others they can be stressful and traumatic. For Tech. Sgt. Graeme Clouden, an electrician with the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron, it’s been a mix of excitement and distress. Having been deployed five times over the course of 16 years, only one of his deployments stands out in his mind. In 2014, he deployed to Afghanistan with the 1st Expeditionary Civil Engineer Group, where he was immersed in a hectic, uncontrollable environment, experiencing regular attacks, including one within 24 hours of his arrival. Attacks on base became so regular”that over time some Airmen didn’t even respond to the warnings. One evening during dinner Clouden heard the usual warning call “Incoming” boom over the speakers. Like most Airmen he took cover, while a few others remained in their seats continuing to eat as if it was a regular day. That moment remains with Clouden. “I remember feeling worried, nervous and aware that at any moment, a blast could destroy the base. I also remember the disturbing feeling it gave me to realize the mindset my peers must have had to not react when their lives were in such imminent danger,” he said. During the same deployment, Clouden recalls another shocking experience, “During that deployment, one of my jobs was to put up a fence on the base. We usually worked from the morning until lunch, but one day, since we were ahead of schedule, we decided to end early. When we returned, we found the section of the fence blown up. Had we not been ahead of schedule, who knows what kind of injuries could have happened.” Out there everything around him was fragile, including himself, which required a more strenuous mindset to get through

Tech. Sgt. Graeme Clouden and his family.

each day, surrendering to the idea that, at any moment, a single attack could change everything. Even now, more than five years later, he still remembers those two upsetting events in detail. When Clouden returned home, at Aviano Air Base, Italy, he was numb and emotionless. He struggled to process information, experienced memory loss, and was absent-minded. Adjusting back to his home and work life was challenging, and he found himself irritable, angry and upset over small things. Coworkers avoided him, and his wife and kids walked on eggshells around him. To cope, Clouden found he had unlimited access to alcohol and started abusing it. Daily he would come home after work with multiple bottles of liquor. One day, after exploding in frustration at his optometrist because of an appointment miscommunication, he finally knew he needed help. “I blew up and just lost it. That’s when I realized I wasn’t okay. I didn’t want to be a statistic, just another Airman who came back damaged, but I wanted to be happy and that [incident] made me realize I needed and wanted to get help,” recalls Clouden. Not knowing where to start, Clouden

made an appointment at the Mental Health Clinic. “I felt awkward asking for an appointment, telling a stranger that I was angry all the time and thought I was depressed,” says Clouden. “But it changed my life forever. It saved me.” Initially, the clinic connected him with a civilian counselor on base, who he met with weekly for talk therapy sessions. “We really connected. From the start, I felt safe talking to her,” he recalls. After the sessions came to a close, since the therapy had helped, he decided to continue therapy with a military counselor who diagnosed him with anxiety, depression and Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, and prescribed medication for these invisible wounds. Clouden is grateful he sought support from the mental health professionals, which assisted him in maintaining his career progression. For him, therapy was the game changer, providing him clarity and teaching him self-reflection techniques and methods for managing emotions in a healthy way. “The therapy helped me feel normal again. It helped me focus and look at things differently, helping me to understand why I did a lot of things. I wasn’t

suicidal, but was obviously depressed,” said Clouden. Now recovered, and continuing to progress in his career, he communicates better with others and regularly practices self-reflection. He still carries his invisible wounds story with him as a reminder of who he wants to be — a loving father and husband and the best Airman he can be. Like Clouden, many Airmen are living with invisible wounds. In fact, all Airmen are susceptible to invisible wounds, regardless of career field. Invisible wounds can be caused by any type of traumatic experience, including combat exposure, blow to the head, physical abuse, sexual assault, blast exposure, serious accidents, death of a loved one or emotional abuse. Invisible wounds have real-life impacts on both personal and professional lives and, if left untreated, the effects could worsen until assistance is provided. If you or a fellow Wingman is living with invisible wounds, encourage them to connect to resources to enable their journey to recovery and resiliency. For Airmen struggling with invisible wounds, Clouden offers the following advice: “It’s not easy, but I encourage you to take that first step in seeking help. Talk to someone about what’s going on. Don’t keep putting it off.” The Invisible Wounds Initiative mission is to improve the quality and value of support provided to Airmen with invisible wounds, to improve the perception of invisible wounds and to remove barriers of care, to ensure Airmen with invisible wounds are treated fairly, equally and in accordance with the Air Force’s commitment to Airmen and their families and to ensure continuum of care processes are executed effectively and efficiently. Griffen Parsells is the best Department of Defense Departments Schools’ cross country runner in Europe. He proved that Saturday by winning the European championships at Baumholder despite crummy weather, a strong field, falling in a mudhole, and not feeling well. The Kaiserslautern junior never trailed and clocked a time of 17:07 minutes, five seconds in front of Stuttgart’s Tyler Wilson and Ramstein’s Conner Mackie. “After I fell, I was surprised. But I looked behind me and saw the rest of the runners coming fast, so I got up and started running again. They caught up quite a bit at that time,” Parcells said. “My dad was following along and said that after the first lap I was up by 100 yards. But after the second it was more like 50. So I had to really push.” So hard, in fact, that he practically collapsed from exhaustion at the finish line. Wilson finished hard, but Parsells had enough to win. Stuttgart’s depth was overwhelming as the Panthers easily won the boys division with Kaiserslautern the runners up. The Raiders’ Ethan Cooper was sixth and Ramstein sophomore Ben Brewster finished eighth. The rest of the top ten were all Panthers. Baumholder’s best was Jacob Cruz. The girls’ race opened the meet. After having to restart because one the runners fell at the beginning, Stuttgart’s McKinley Fielding grabbed the lead immediately and cruised past the finish line one minute and 40 seconds ahead of her competitors. Her time of 18:39 minutes crushed the European record by five seconds and, along with her performances in track, gave her six overall European championships, three of them records. The junior would have had eight, but came in second at her weight class in wrestling two years running. Kaiserslautern’s Kayla Ballard was sixth, Piper Parsells 13th and Ramstein’s Alexis Pierre-Louis was 21st. Baumholder’s top finisher was Madi Brech. Stuttgart had 44 points to Kaiserslautern’s 86. Wiesbaden was third. Parsells will be back to defend his title and shoot for the European record next fall. But for Fielding, this was her last cross country championship due to an upcoming relocation.

Kaiserslautern vs Ramstein. The Royals want another title and Kaiserslautern wants to do everything it can to make sure that does not happen. Two weeks ago, Ramstein won by nine at Kaiserslautern. Tomorrow at Ramstein, the Raiders get their chance to even the score when they meet again at 1 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Division One European Championships. Kaiserslautern had to win at Lakenheath last weekend to get into position to play the Royals, setting up the dramatic rematch. The teams that play against Ramstein are figuring out three things. They should not run at Logan Ridenbaugh, the offensive line of Sean Hogan, David Carreno, Chris May, Teddy Ward and Ridenbaugh is going to go after them relentlessly and that Dom Arizpe is really fast. Ridenbaugh anchored the right defensive end spot and stoned Vilseck with eleven tackles. He added two sacks and a blocked punt en route to a 30-10 Royals victory in the last regular season game. The score would have been more lopsided, but Arizpe had two kickoff returns for touchdowns called back because of penalties. He did get one that counted when he scooted around right end for 73 yards that staked the Royals to a 17-3 lead shortly after the second half began. Ramstein added a one-yard sneak from Carl Norman, a punishing TD from Oliver Seelig, a pass from Ethan Smith to Javyn Hill and a 30-yard field goal from Matt Reismann. Vilseck was held to three points until it ran in a very late touchdown. In the UK, Kaiserslautern drove 60 yards in less than two minutes before Tre Dotson’s 9-yard run and two-point conversion run with less than a minute to go iced a 29-27 come from behind victory at Lakenheath. Dorian Cotton then locked it up by grabbing an interception. Sophomore quarterback Nelson Rivas completed 14 of 26 for 167 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Dotson caught five balls for 78 yards and a touchdown. Shaun Edwards and Kaylon Williams grabbed the other two TDs. Defensively Stephan Cooley had 16 tackles and Drew Frederick had 12. “Our Kaiserslautern boys kept fighting the whole game,” said a tired Coach Robert Allen after a 15-hour bus trip. “These young men have been working hard for this since last spring, and their work and dedication showed. Kaiserslautern has a winning record and four regular season wins for the first time in a long time, and all the credit goes to these boys. They believe in each other and have worked hard to create a winning team and a never-give-up culture.” In Spangdahlem, Baumholder had upset on the brain and its defense was relentless in holding unbeaten Spangdahlem to just 20 points. But Spangdahlem’s was just as stout, allowing 19. In sixman football, that is almost like a shut out.

It came down to victories by the number three doubles matches in both boys and girls for Ramstein to eke out 5-4 tennis triumphs over Wiesbaden on the Ramstein courts Oct. 19. With the scores tied, Reed Gallagher, who had won his singles match earlier in the day, was joined by Adam Hanks to win the deciding match 8-2 over Wiesbaden’s Connor Buchheit and Jaden Anderson. On the girls’ side, Kaiya Hernandez and Ashleigh Emery beat Isabela Bishop and Hannah Neumann 8-5. Both of Ramstein’s number one seeds were defeated. Conner Markus fell to Zachary Keener 10-8 in a super tiebreaker. Kassiana Von Eichen lost to Charlotte Kordonowsky 2-6, 0-6. Dougie Allison, shown sizing up a return shot, lost to Hope Goodwin in number 2 singles. But it was the numbers four, five and six players who pulled the Royals out of the fire with Austin Emery, Collin Ritter and Gallagher winning their singles matches for the boys and Isabella Guzaldo at number three singles, along with Madalin Svan, Lydia Woodfork and Hernandez winning their matches decisively. The number three duos also saved the day in doubles after both the numbers one and two were defeated. “The matches today were fantastic. Both Coach Rooney and I were amazed at how close the competition was between our boys and girls,” said Coach Alfredo Rios. “Both teams played their hearts out. This was a fantastic way to finish the regular season. Looking forward to the European Championships. “ Kaiserslautern took a rare two site road trip. On Friday in Stuttgart, the rain wiped out or shortened some of the matches. In the singles matches, the boys won 4-2 with all doubles matches rained out while the girls lost 5-3. Defending European champ Aiva Schmitz stayed undefeated with straight 6-0 sets over the Panthers Violet Maria-Williams. “We were disappointed we couldn’t finish the matches from the perspective of getting prepared for the Europeans, but overall some good performances,” said Coach Gabriell Horton. On Saturday in Vilseck, the Raiders rolled to a 9-0 dominating victory. Schmitz again was perfect, as was number one singles boys player William Alsing. Devon Holly and Olaitan Powdar stayed unbeaten in boys doubles with straight set shutouts. Both Ramstein and Kaiserslautern are competing in the European Championships in Wiesbaden this week with final contests tomorrow.

It was a perfect homecoming and senior weekend as Ramstein swept Vilseck in straight sets in a volleyball double header, continuing to build momentum for the European tournament semifinals at KMC next week and knowing that a victory would help solidify seeding. The coaches stressed leadership, focus and concentration throughout the week’s practices and it showed with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-23 victory in the first match and 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 in the second. The two teams had split earlier in the season. The senior leadership kicked in when it was most needed after a lackluster performance two weeks ago. “We knew what we had to do and had a clear plan going into the weekend. We were ready from the first whistle,” said coach Kandel Baxter. “We were down in the third set but our girls kept focus, played smart, and stuck to our guns. Our serving and blocking was on point and our middles played their best games yet.” Once again, the Royals were led by Gigi Stake with eight kills, Tamiya Bruce with seven kills and Lauryn Szczygiel with five kills and five blocks. Isabella Coddington had 22 assists. In the second match, senior setter Isabelle Coddington shown dishing out one of her 28 assists. Libero Lydia Coddington recorded 17 digs. Their last tune up before Euros is at Black Forest Academy this weekend. In the UK, Kaiserslautern defeated Lakenheath 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-14, continuing to gain momentum down the stretch. “I like the team, and program we are bringing in,” said Coach Aaron Scalise. “We still have room for improvement and need to face the defending champions, Stuttgart, this weekend to help finalize our roster. Yet, I like what we have and what we are continuing to build at Kaiserslautern High School. I truly like our chances.”

FUN FRIDAY Special Offer: Make reservations for 10 or more people and get a 20% discount. Offer valid on Fridays, except German holidays, until December 31, 2019.

Gourmet Tempel in Kaiserslautern has been open since May 2016 and their mission is to spoil you with traditional Chinese recipes that are prepared using high-quality regional products with a wide array of spices. The Chinese cuisine consists of an independent and versatile cooking tradition with various traditional and typical dishes infused with a large amount and variety of Asian ingredients that define their character. At Gourmet Tempel their motto is “Love and friendship are the best spices to add to any dish,” which makes all the difference in taste, according to them. With sure instinct and a lot of passion the owners Mrs. and Mr. Lin created a one-of-a-kind atmosphere for you with an all-you-can-eat and drink buffet. You certainly feel like you’re dining in a shiny golden temple filled with glass, colors, lights and sparkles. The restaurant covers almost 1,800 square feet (1,000 square meters) and

can seat up to 400 people. As it is divided into different sections, it feels cosy and you don’t really notice how big the place is. The staff of ten employees make sure their high standards in service and cleanliness are met and while running the daily business they also manage take-away orders, catering and party services and offer space for company gatherings and other celebrations in the restaurant. If you’re going out to eat with children, you’ll surely appreciate the closed off playroom which has a glass wall facing one section of a seating area so you can keep an eye on them while eating in peace. In the buffet area you’ll find two large Teppanyaki steel grill plates. You take your plate with raw meat, fish and vegetables of your choice to the grill master standing there and he grills it on the spot. When he’s finished, the waiters then bring the plate to your

table. Try one of the special sauces to round off the taste of your freshly grilled dish. Besides the typical Chinese dishes like “Eight Sacred Treasures” or fried spring rolls, the all-you-can-eat buffet also offers soups, various vegetables, fruit and a salad bar. It’s an all-youcan-drink deal as well. All soft drinks, beer, wine, tea and coffee are included — Drink as much as you like with no extra charge during the evening buffet times and all day on the weekends. On week days during the lunch buffet one drink is included and it’s a discounted price for any other drink after that. Japanese specialities are also available. Try their Sushi made with fresh ingredients and their own creations or ask them to make you your own specialty from scratch. Now it’s time to take your senses on a sensual journey through the Asian countries and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with lunch or an exciting eve-

ning with friends and family in a stylish atmosphere at Gourmet Tempel in Kaiserslautern. Be sure to book your holiday parties now and celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve here — whether it’s a company event or with family and friends, they will gladly cater to your needs. Credit cards, American Express, Mastercard and VISA are accepted. They take VAT forms for large groups as well, just be sure to ask in advance. There is free parking directly in front of and behind the building. Or you can even use the parking lot nextdoor at “Pitstop,” as they have an agreement with them. Prices and content subject to change. Mainzer Str. 28, 67657 Kaiserslautern Phone: 0631 - 414 175 75 or 0631 - 414 175 76 info@gourmet-tempel-kl.de www.gourmet-tempel-kl.de
