Readiness stressed at ‘World’s Best Wing’ by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, held his first all-call at Hangar 3 on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 27. August aimed to reach all personnel assigned to the 86th AW in one day. During the all-calls, he emphasized his priorities and stressed the importance of readiness. “This entire team is about professional airlift,” said August. “The way I see it if it’s anytime, anywhere, from the pavement up it’s our responsibility.” While professional airlift was the first priority mentioned, August elaborated on four other objectives he plans to obtain, including: gateway to the world, taking care of See ALLCALL, Page 2

Ramstein says hello to the OCP By Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Oct. 1 was the first day Airmen were authorized to wear the Operational Camouflage Pattern Uniform across the Air Force, but how do Airmen know what local policies may be in effect during this transitional time? In accordance with Air Force Instruction 36-2903, “Dress and Appearance,” as of Oct. 1, to wear the OCP Airmen must have: • An OCP patrol cap with spice brown thread embroidered Velcro or sewn nametape on the back. For commissioned officers the cap includes a sewn on rank ½ inch

centered above the visor. • The OCP blouse shall be worn with nametape and U.S. Air Force tape, embroidered with spice brown thread. • Air Force Aeronautical, Space, and Cyberspace “wings” are mandatory. • Occupational badges, other than wings, are optional on the OCP blouse. • Rank Insignia is mandatory for all personnel and will be spice brown, with the exception of First Lieutenant and Lieutenant Colonel ranks, which will be black. • The right sleeve of the OCP blouse

Page 2 ALLCALL from Page 1 Airmen, engagement, and preparation. The overall goal is to ensure the 86th AW is the “World’s Best Wing” and the major command’s first choice for any occasion. “When USAFE is looking for something to get done, I want their first choice, every time, to be the 86th Airlift Wing,” said August. “We represent enough capability here for the command to not have to look outside our fenceline.” To reach his established vision for the 86th AW, August gave his focus for the team. “You’re going to hear me talk about readiness all day, every day,” said August. “It’s my passion; it’s about mission, it’s about us. Readiness starts at the organizational level. It starts here at the wing, it’s what your commanders do to get you ready for the mission.” Readiness goes deeper than the team and organization, it is each Airman’s responsibility, he added. “The days of having six months to train for deployment are over,” said August. “To be prepared, I’m going to ask you to be ready to fight tonight, not six months from now.” August indicated that all levels of leadership plan to support each

unit and each member to meet the standard. “We have to be ready,” said August. “You tell me when, how much, what you need to get there and my answer is ‘Yes.’” Airmen leaving the all-calls were inspired by the new direction given to them, despite the large order. “He set his expectations and guidelines, and told us what he wants,” said Staff Sgt. Darius Golson, assigned to the 86th AW. “He told us what he is turning us toward. We just need to be ready.”

will feature an American flag patch, with spice brown threading, with the flag facing “backwards,” giving the appearance of the flag blowing in the wind. Until further guidance is issued, approved unit and higher headquarters patches, usually positioned on the right and left sleeve, respectively, are optional. OCP trousers will be worn with coyote brown riggers belt and pant legs tucked or bloused into boots. Socks may be Desert Sand, Tan or DLA-issued Green socks until 1 June 2020, when Airmen will only wear DLA-issued Green socks. Airmen may wear either Tan or Coyote Brown boots with the OCP. On 1 June 2020, Coyote Brown boots will be worn with the OCP and the flight duty uniform.

According to Air Force officials, Airmen are not permitted to wear the OCP uniform unless the uniform

includes all mandatory wear items identified above. Airmen can purchase the OCP initially at an AAFES Military Clothing Sales Store at the following locations starting Oct. 1, 2018: Aviano Air Base, Charleston Air Force Base, Shaw Air Force Base, and MacDill Air Force Base. From there, officials expect manufacturing levels to ramp up across all AAFES locations world-wide in the months thereafter. As production increases, AAFES will post locations on their web page where and when you can purchase OCPs at your servicing locations. Officials also expect AAFES online purchasing to commence around October 2019. Officials continued to stress that inventories readily available at AAFES are based on current Army demand levels. To prevent any shortages, adjustments to inventory levels will be completed once the transition begins. When purchasing uniforms at AAFES stores, service members must show proof of service branch and rank, and/or deployment orders to acquire the appropriate uniform and accessories.

living on and off base are authorized to dispose of the cut uniform material at their local Ramstein and Vogelweh recycling centers. “Our Airmen are eager to begin wearing the OCP because of the many advantages it provides,” said Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto J. Rendon, 86th Airlift Wing

command chief. “This uniform is more combat-ready for the environments our Airmen face downrange, and will be more cost effective in the long run. It will take time for our Airmen to fully transition to the OCP — we must wear the uniform correctly, so please ask your leadership if you have any questions.”

Ramstein observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, when members of the military community work together to increase awareness of an issue that can often be overlooked. Domestic Violence Awareness Month traces its roots back to October 1981 as the “Day of Unity,” with the intent to end violence against women and children. Eventually, the “Day of Unity” was celebrated for an entire week, before the first DVAM was observed in October 1987. “One of the goals of Domestic Violence Awareness Month for Ramstein is to recognize the prevalence of this issue,” said Capt. Deborah Schaefer, 86th Medical Operations Squadron Family Advocacy officer. “The Family Advocacy Program conducts annual education and prevention campaigns to promote community awareness, understanding and knowledge of intervention strate-

gies. This month highlights the importance of awareness and gives our helping agencies an opportunity to promote our resources and availability.” One of the most critical aspects to helping victims of domestic abuse is not falling into the bystander trap. “As a military community we can help by being aware of the issue and those around us who may be suffering quietly,” said Schaefer. “We shouldn’t be afraid to speak to someone or ask them if they need help. Oftentimes we remain silent when we see the signs of domestic violence. By not intervening, you are enabling.” The Ramstein Family Advocacy Office is planning several events to increase awareness of domestic abuse during the month of October. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, or would just like to receive more information, call the Ramstein Family Advocacy Program at 4792370 or 06371-46-2370.

AFPC increases transparency of DSD assignments by Kat Bailey Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs The Air Force’s Personnel Center has revised the way it delivers notifications for Airmen selected for Military Training Instructor (8B000) and Military Training Leader (8B100) Developmental Special Duty assignments in an effort to create more commander involvement and increase transparency in the process. Set to start with the Fall 2018 cycle, AFPC will “front-load” DSD tentative assignments prior to final approval so commanders of selected Airmen can receive seven days’ advanced notification. In the past, these tentative selection notifications from the hiring authority went directly to Airmen. This change supports Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein’s “Revitalizing Squadrons” effort, ensuring commanders are aware of assignments given to their Airmen. “The advance notification enables commanders to notify their Airmen of the assignment and gives Airmen leadership an opportunity to guide them through the next steps of the assignment process,” said AFPC’s operations and special duty Airman career management division superintendent, Chief Master Sgt. Stephanie DeSouza. “It also provides the chance to discuss the pros and cons of the assignment,

A military training instructor gives instruction to a trainee and his wingman during a formation at Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland, Texas.

ultimately giving commanders additional mentoring opportunities.” The seven-day window also allows for discussion of the Airman’s professional development path and the assignment timing for their family. Additionally, the added step permits delivery of the assignment notification face-to-face rather than on a computer. Furthermore, this revised DSD assignment notification process enables commanders to assist Airmen as

they work through the Special Duty Catalog, or SPECAT, requirements. All assignments are tentative pending SPECAT approval, as Airmen must be fully qualified for their DSD positions. “Leaders at every level must mentor Airmen to ensure they receive the best professional development advice and experience needed for their career,” DeSouza said. “Airmen selected for DSD must be highly qualified — an ambassador and role model for the Air

Force core values of integrity, service and excellence. The selected special duties are those that create, develop and care for Airmen, so nominees must have a demonstrated record of exceptional performance and a high capacity to lead.” Find additional information on the DSD page of the Air Force’s Personnel Center public website via the assignment landing page.

Equal Opportunity Office: Filling communication gaps by Airman D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing Equal Opportunity office on Ramstein Air Base, is offering professional development courses to combat work place communication problems. “What we do, is try to resolve concerns or issues that people may have based on what they believe may be discrimination or harassment,” said Heather Bradley, 86th AW EO director. “We also cover reprisals for going to EO or standing up against a policy.” A lot of what comes through the EO office are communication gaps. EO often receives phone calls from leaders and managers who are having difficulty communicating with their team or see people having difficulty communicating within their work center. “After evaluating the data from my office, I saw there was an opportunity to reach out to the military community and fill part of that communication gap with

some leadership tools,” said Bradley. The EO office offers courses designed to combat bad communication and promote healthy workplace dynamics. “Once the communication flow opens up between people we don’t have as many misunderstandings,” said Bradley. “It’s the preventative piece; that’s the focus. The educational piece is a bi-product, but professional and personal development for everyone is a win for the wing.” Some courses offered by EO include: • DISC, which stands for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. A non-judgmental tool used for discussion, DISC produces a detailed report of people’s behavioral differences; and also provides participants tips related to working with people of other styles. • Emotional Intelligence, which offers 66 strategies that increase ones emotional intelligence. Participants who increase their emotional intelligence skills increase their ability to com-

municate effectively, handle conflict, respond to change, manage stress, and provide better customer service. • 4 Lenses personality assessment, which helps organizations understand the talent and potential of its individuals. The assessment has been simplified to create a more enjoyable experience with longer-lasting application retention. • 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which aligns timeless principles of effectiveness with modern technology and practices. The program aims to teach participants to effectively lead themselves, influence, engage and collaborate with others, and continually improve and renew their capabilities. • John Maxwell Team Leadership Program, which raises leadership awareness of participants and introduces timeless leadership principles that aim to bring about positive change through communication and connection.

“The EO field has had these kinds of human relations development courses for a very long time,” said Bradley. “We’ve always believed that if we reach out and develop people, we’re likely to have less conflict and we’re likely to have less complaints.” The goal of offering personality awareness courses is to not only help participants identify their own personality traits but to also identify the traits of colleagues. “When we bring awareness and raise consciousness in people that’s when we have the opportunity to invoke real change,” said Bradley. “We want to make sure that we have an environment where people understand one another and employ empathy.” Bradley added, with these skills, people are…better; when they communicate better they can resolve problems at the lowest level. “Conflict is healthy,” said Bradley. “But it’s how we engage in conflict is what I would like to change.”

Virtual solutions to combat digital age

by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The information technology tools innovation team aims to make the wing better, faster, and stronger. “One of the responsibilities in our career field education and training plan is to constantly push innovation and process improvement,” said Staff Sgt. Gage Tressitt, 86th Communications Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of base publications and forms.

Tressitt said the IT tools innovation team is a resource for anyone who seeks to improve their unit’s efficiency. The innovation team meets with the unit, talks about what processes exist, and then how they can improve. After the initial briefing, the innovation team brainstorms virtual solutions. “Through this process we’ve created tools like the appointment letter management tool which virtualizes all appointment letters across the wing,” said Tressitt. “We’ve also created a postal site that

allows members to in- and out-process virtually; along with a number of other tools.” The IT tools innovation team is spreading across the 86th Airlift Wing leaving their mark on a number of hightraffic organizations such as the vehicle registration office and base legal office. “Essentially, it’s a way for customers to virtualize what they’re doing,” said Airman 1st Class Johnathon Hagen, 86th Communications Squadron base knowledge manager. “This in return, speeds up the process.”

Tressitt added, the main thing the IT tools innovation team does is save time for customers and technicians across the base. Whenever time is saved, the task becomes easier and improves the mission; it also improves the technicians’ work. “Even if we’re cutting two minutes off of a process each time it’s performed, at the end of the year that is going to be quite a substantial amount of time saved,” said Tressitt. With a goal of aiding as many units as possible, the IT tools innovation team invites units throughout Ramstein to

reach out and utilize their resources. “We can’t reach out to the entire base, so having customers let us know about their processes and inviting us over to take a look at them helps us, help them,” said Tressitt. “We may not be able to help with every process that is brought our way, but we definitely would like to try.” The IT tools innovation team is available locally at 4800977; additionally via email at 86CS.SCOK.RamsteinKMC@ us.af.mil.

Every Airman makes planes fly Story and photo by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs There are two questions many civilians ask when they meet Airmen in uniform. The first is, “are you in the Army?” The second is something along the lines of, “what aircraft do you fly?” Only about 12,000 of the more than 320,000 Airmen in the U.S. Air Force are pilots. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for many Airmen to feel annoyed, embarrassed, or even unimportant when asked the second question. Some might give an honest answer about their vocation while others play the “it’s classified” card. Brig. Gen. Charles S. Corcoran, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration director of operations, addressed this topic when he delivered a speech in front of hundreds of Airmen from an array of career fields during Ramstein’s Air Force Ball celebration. He began by recalling a time when his son asked him how his day was.

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles S. Corcoran, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration director of operations, addresses attendees during an Air Force Ball celebration on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 22. Corcoran spoke about the importance of all Airmen in mission accomplishment.

It was a tough question for him to answer, given the complex nature of his job. “How often do we go home at night and get asked about what we did at work,” Corcoran asked, relating his situation to the audience. “You don’t

just simply tell them about everything you’ve been doing about air superiority, command and control, intelligence, and air mobility. They’ll look at you like you’re from outer space — or have been hanging out at the bar too long.” Even though many Airmen can-

not expound the details of their vocation to their friends or relatives, their jobs play an undeniable role in the Air Force’s daily mission accomplishment, Corcoran added. To illustrate his point, Corcoran gave the example of a recent mission involving U.S. aircraft. A seemingly endless list of Airmen from a variety of specialty fields worked together to make the mission possible: maintenance, air traffic control, aircrew flight equipment, fuels, ammunition, intelligence, medical, food service, and many others. Corcoran encouraged all Airmen not to be discouraged just because their work doesn’t seem glamourous or there are classified parts of their job they can’t talk about. Every Air Force specialty code is vital to the success of every mission, he said. “So you might not tell these things to your mom and dad on the phone, but you make it happen every day,” Corcoran said. “This mission played out without turning into some kind of Hollywood drama, and it happened successfully because we did our job — every last one of us.”

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month kicks off by 86th Airlift Wing Cybersecurity Office The 15th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month began Oct. 1. The month seeks to ensure every American has the resources needed to stay more safe and secure online, while increasing the resiliency of the nation during cyber threats. According to the Department of Homeland Security, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and every individual has a role to play. For military personnel and dependents living in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, travel opportunities pose additional challenges to staying safe online. Here are four best practices as we enter into a busier period of travel: 1. Use strong passwords — Change default passwords on mobile devices to ones that would be difficult to guess. Use different passwords for different programs, sites, and devices. Do not choose options that allow devices to remember your passwords. Consider using a password vault app on mobile devices. 2. Review privacy and security permissions — Review and understand

the privacy and security permissions for websites or apps that share personal information. When using social media sites, customize the privacy settings. Adjust your privacy settings so that only approved people can view the information. 3. Be careful what is posted and when — Wait to post pictures from trips and events so that people do not know where to find you. Posting a location could notify others that you are away from home, thus leaving it vulnerable. Consider adjusting settings on social media platforms that allow users to check in and broadcast their location. 4. Exercise caution when using public wi-fi networks — Before connecting to public wireless hotspots — like in an airport, hotel, train or bus station, or café — confirm the name of the network and login procedures with appropriate staff to ensure that the network is legitimate. Cybercriminals can easily create a similarly named network hoping users will overlook which network is the legitimate one. Most hotspots are not secure and do not encrypt the information sent over the internet, leaving it vulnerable to

online criminals. Avoid online shopping, banking, and sensitive work requiring passwords or credit card information. Remember there is no delete button on the internet. Even if content is deleted, someone could have saved it or taken a screenshot. Before posting, ask: “Am I comfortable with sharing this information with the whole world?”

Practicing cybersecurity is an everyday task and requires relatively minimal effort to safeguard yourself and your families. Over the course of the month, the 86th Airlift Wing Cybersecurity Office will be presenting material in line with this year’s overarching themes of Making Your Home a Haven for Online Safety, Educating for a Career in Cybersecurity, Online Safety at Work and Safeguarding Critical Infrastructure.

ISR-I assesses garrison infrastructure for future improvements Story and photo by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz has more than 3,000 facilities on 29 sites, so ensuring building conditions are accurately assessed and documented for future funding is essential to their upkeep. That’s why the garrison conducts Installation Status ReportInfrastructure assessments to promote the longevity and management of garrison structures. ISR is used as a decision-making tool for senior leaders to evaluate installation facility condition and adequacy, as well as identify improvement costs. “ISR-I provides an evaluation of the mission support functional capability, quality, quantity and readiness of Army infrastructure for each reporting location to established Army standards,” said Gregory A. Williams, USAG RP Director of Public Works. “It also calculates costs to improve the inventory.” Assessors use established, Armywide standards to evaluate the condition of facilities and infrastructure; and identify substandard buildings or shortfalls. This helps the garrison compute restoration costs and coordinate restoration efforts across reporting locations, Williams explained. Tenant organizations, garrison functions and community support partners occupying garrison buildings assist with assessments. Many evaluators

(Left) U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Commander Col. Jason T. Edwards presents a commander’s coin to Chief Warrant Officer 3 Tom McCleave, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, for his dedicated efforts in coordinating Installation Status Report-Infrastructure inspections with tenant-organization assessors and Mathias Reh, USAG RP Directorate of Public Works ISR-I program manager, Sept. 19.

receive ISR training before inspecting structures, roads, grounds and utilities, said Mathias Reh, a DPW general engineer and ISR-I program manager. “The program has a yearly data collection cycle. Facilities like dining facilities, child development centers and barracks need to be inspected annually,” Reh explained. “Other facilities need to be inspected at least every five years. Regardless of scheduled inspections, any facility can be inspected out of cycle if significant damage occurs in between the last regular inspection and next scheduled inspection.”

USAG RP Commander Col. Jason T. Edwards evaluated a building in Baumholder recently to get a better grasp of the ISR-I process and observe what assessors were tasked to do. “The best assessment of any process is one done in person. I am now able to understand the process, the time it takes for a properly executed inspection and how this inspection directly relates to our infrastructure readiness,” the commander said. “It was a blessing to meet these 16th Sustainment Brigade Soldiers and see first hand the passion they have for their facilities. This

is despite decades-old barracks always in need of paint, patch and repair. The quality of their inspections will certainly create the demand signal for future funds towards renovations.” Although tenant organizations don’t own the facilities they work in, their cooperation in performing these duties and ISR-I inspections is crucial to the readiness of garrison structures, and their reports are an essential driving force to Army funding and investment decisions. “More importantly is not only the readiness of the infrastructure, but the time it takes to properly execute the inspection,” Edwards explained. “Trained Soldiers should take between two to three hours for a quality inspection and then an additional hour to upload the narrative details within the required reporting apparatus. Every step counts and measuring the time to ensure we are reporting to standard takes communication with units and agencies always driving towards 100 percent accountability of assigned structures.” Taking care of garrison structures is a community effort, and with the help of our tenant units, it can be accomplished quickly and easily, the commander said. “It is my intent to meet IMCOM reporting standards and provide the best comments to describe the status of our infrastructure,” Edwards concluded.

Light Test 2018: Check your vehicle lights, eye sight before winter begins by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office Winter is approaching and the days will slowly become shorter, resulting in more people driving to and from work in the dark. That’s why October’s Motor Vehicle Lighting Equipment Check Campaign is so important. This year’s theme is “Light Test: Preparation is Worthwhile,” and although vehicle illumination is a common subject of the promotion, motorist eyesight is a new focus for the campaign. “Ensuring vehicle lighting works properly is essential when driving, but making sure you can see properly while driving is paramount,” said Alfredo Nogueras, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Safety director. “If your vision is poor, you may not see hazards on the road or possibly create hazards for other drivers. People should make it a habit to have their vision checked as well as their vehicle illumination every year.”

Every October, drivers are encouraged to have their vehicle lighting inspected to identify and correct deficiencies prior to the dangerous fall and winter driving conditions. Participating Army and Air Force Exchange Service Car Care Centers, U.S. Forces Vehicle Inspection Stations and local auto repair shops may provide free inspections in support of the Motor Vehicle Lighting campaign, Oct. 1 to 31. The following items will be examined, during a vehicle light function test: • Mist, search and other permitted auxiliary lights • High and low beams • Parking lights • Brake lights • Marker lights • Hazard lights • Direction indicators • Fog lights In addition to lighting inspections at vehicle inspection stations and garages, AAFES Car Care Centers will also

check windshield wipers and tires as well. Vehicle owners are responsible for the cost of repair work to correct any deficiencies. In addition to completing automobile safety inspections, U.S. Forces Vehicle Inspection Stations will also offer the lighting systems inspections. Additionally, according to Army in Europe Regulation 190-1/USAFE Instruction 31-202, paragraph 3-3. Mechanical Standards “c. First-line supervisors or platoon sergeants will visually inspect subordinates’ POVs at least every 180 days for violations of basic safety standards (for example, worn or bald tires, the wrong type of tires for the current season, inoperative lights, broken windshields and glass, dangerous projections caused by rust, accidents) and record their findings on DA Form 3626. Supervisors will enforce basic safety standards by ensuring their subordinates do not operate unsafe vehicles until the vehicle is repaired, registered as nonoperational, or properly disposed of.” “The Motor Vehicle Lighting

Equipment Check Campaign and annual vision examinations with an optometrist will help keep you, your family and other drivers safe on the road during the colder and darker winter months,” Nogueras concluded. “Ensure you can see what’s on the road and you can be seen by other drivers — it’s important for everyone’s safety.”

Every October, drivers in Germany are encouraged to have the vehicle lighting inspected for safety purposes during the Light Test 2018 campaign. Graphic courtesy of www.lichttest.de

Security deposits for your rental in Germany By Find-It-Guide.com It is likely that you will be renting a place to live in while you are here in Germany, which means you will be dealing with a security deposit. The amount you may need to come up with can be substantial, especially when you take into account the current exchange rate. The amount of the deposit could be two months rent, but can be as high as three months rent. It cannot be more than three months rent by German law and it can be spread out over three months if you are able to negotiate that with your landlord. Additionally, your landlord is required to put the security amount in an interest bearing account. This must be a separate account from the landlord’s account where the rent is deposited so you are protected if the landlord runs into any financial problems (like bankruptcy). Assuming there are no damages to the house or apartment, the landlord is required to pay the tenant the interest that was accrued during the time of the rental. If you stay in your dwelling for a number of years, this could actually amount to a decent sum of money (although nothing anyone will get rich from). Read more on last page of Property Section

All real estate advertised is subject to the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968, which makes it illegal to advertise any preference, limitation or discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin, or an intention to make such preference, limitation or discrimination. The publisher will not knowingly accept any advertisement for real estate which is in violation of the law. All dwellings advertised in this newspaper are available on an equal opportunity basis.

Continued from front page of Properties section When it comes time to move out, the landlord will evaluate the rental to see what repairs may need to be done. Once the final inspection is done, the landlord must get a list of the items that need to be repaired in what is described as “a responsible time.” This is where it can get a little difficult if you are moving into a new place and need that security deposit returned quickly. “A responsible time” by German law says it could be anywhere from three to twelve months if assessing the damage is complicated. If it is straightforward and there are no real issues, the landlord is expected to get it back sooner.

With regard to damages, it is always good to do a complete review with your landlord of the condition of the dwelling. With today’s technology, you may want to take pictures of everything as the pictures taken on a smartphone will have a timestamp that can be very helpful. You should get the advice of your housing office or a lawyer if you are not familiar with renting a house in Germany as there are many laws that are different than those of the United States.

If you are PCSing and will not be in Germany while the landlord is calculating the damages, you may want to consider finding a responsible party that can act as a legal representative or give a “power of attorney.”
