Energy Action Month 2023 — Powering possibility Put away your portable air conditioning units for those long summer days and take out your space heater. Or better yet, let me tell you about a few tips on how to use conventional radiators. Every October, the Department of the Air Force empowers installations to bring attention to energy use and how to better manage resources. We encourage Airmen and civilians to create habits guided toward energy conservation. It is important to emphasize these habits are not only for the month of October, but can be used all year round. This initiative dates to 1981, when the federal government created American Energy Week. The U.S. Department of Energy transformed this into a month-long event in 1986. On September 13th, 1991, President George Bush proclaimed October as Energy Awareness Month to promote public awareness of our nation’s energy needs and the energy options that are available to us. Value has been added to this initiative with the creation and approval of the Energy Policy Act in 2005 and Energy Independence and Security Act in 2007. As a result, federal facilities have incorporated more energy efficient measures throughout the years. Powering possibility The 2023 Energy Action Month theme is “powering possibility,” this continues to build a three-year theme. It is important to point out Air Force installation energy vision: Mission Assurance through Energy Assurance. The energy assurance approach is resilientforced, mission-centric, water-inclusive and climate-informed. Developing energy resilience solutions can improve our energy and water infrastructure to respond and recover from utility disturbances while ensuring the function and capability of operations. Energy conservation plays a major role in our energy resilience. With conservation, we can plan for a more robust infrastructure and make informed decisions for future energy demands. Each person’s actions have a ripple effect on our energy dependence.

defined as using technology requiring less energy to perform the same function (LED bulbs, smart controllers, upgrading appliances, etc.). On most occasions, energy efficiency requires homeowners to make an investment toward current technology. Energy conservation has little to no cost to your pocket. Making energy conservation habits can have numerous benefits. The most important benefits include: 1. Lower energy cost. Lighting accounts for approximately 10 percent of electricity consumption in households. In commercial building, lighting accounts for approximately 25-40 percent of electricity consumption. 2. Less harm to the environment. Burning fossil fuels creates emissions that enter the environment and create a greenhouse effect. This traps heat and makes the Earth’s temperatures unstable and contributes to climate change. According to a survey by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the estimated annual CO2 emissions is 14,020 pounds per household, assuming approximately 943 kWh per month. How can you help decrease energy use during the winter season: • Emphasize the importance of proper radiator settings. Start with thermostats at 64 °F, and then increase by one degree each day until you find a temperature your family or co-workers are comfortable with, taking into consideration infants and elderly family members. If this is a hard task because of day-to-day responsibilities, follow

these three rules: 1. During occupied hours, set indoor comfort heating temperature to three, approximately 68°F. 2. During unoccupied hours, set indoor comfort heating temperature to one, approximately 55°F. 3. Set low transient areas (hallways, stairwells, restrooms, etc.) and high to moderate physical activity areas to one, approximately 55°F. • Proper ventilation of rooms. Ensure all windows are closed, dedicating time during the day to ventilate indoor spaces. It is recommended to ventilate each room for three to eight minutes in the morning and in the afternoon as fresh air is needed for a healthy building. • Clearance around radiators. Ensure all radiators are free and clear of large furniture. • Weatherization of doors and windows. To minimize heat waste, we encourage you to perform a visual inspection of your home for air leaks around windows and doors. Decrease energy use on a day-to-day basis: • Turn off lights when not in use or when natural daylight is sufficient. • Turn off monitors at the end of the workday. Enable the power management function on office computers, automatically putting monitors to sleep when not in use. • Turn off office equipment when it is not needed at night or on weekends. Activate sleep settings on all printers, copiers, fax

machines, scanners and multifunction devices so they automatically enter a low-powered sleep mode when inactive. • Turn off power to computers, TVs, exercise equipment, lights and all electronic devices when not in use to avoid wasting standby power. • Plug multiple devices into a power strip with a surge protector so you can turn them all off with the flip of one switch, while also protecting them from damage. • Use water wisely and turn off when not in use, such as while brushing teeth and shaving. Keep watch for water leaks and repair as needed. • Utilize carpools, public transportation or a bicycle if possible. These tips can easily be translated from your household to your workplace, and vice versa. Educate the people around you to help conserve energy and advocate for energy efficiency at the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Most importantly: if you do not need it, do not use it. Small changes can have a large impact over time. For more information, please email the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Engineering Flight at 86CES.CENPE-EnergySection. What is energy conservation and why it is important? Energy conservation is achieved by minimizing energy consumption. This is achieved through conscious human decision and action, not to be confused with energy efficiency. Energy efficiency is

OSI takes aim at laser pointers, aircraft safety by Thomas Brading Office of Special Investigations Public Affairs As the Office of Special Investigations safeguards the Department of the Air Force, they are confronting a surge in incidents involving laser pointers, which pose significant threats to Air Force aircraft, especially at night. These seemingly harmless beams, often used for classroom presentations or amusing a house cat, can also disrupt flight operations and create challenges for pilots. “We refer to these as lazing incidents. It’s crucial for the public to understand that aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft is not only dangerous but a felony,” said an official from the OSI Center. Officials added the importance of real-time reporting and response by all agencies and law enforcement, both stateside and overseas, as a key strategy in addressing these incidents. In addition, individuals may incur fines up to $250,000 and face imprisonment for up to five years. Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration has the authority to impose civil penalties, with fines escalating to $11,000 per violation and $30,800 for multiple incidents. Officials said the necessity of ensuring smooth information

ing in sudden disorientation and temporary blindness. This risk is worse during critical phases of flight, potentially leading to the loss of aircraft and crew, thereby imperiling lives on the ground. “These are not harmless pranks. There’s a risk of causing permanent visual impairment. From the public’s standpoint, misusing lasers can severely impact a person’s ability to see and function,” said an OSI Center official. According to the FAA, the United States has experienced a notable surge in reported laser incidents, with 2021 marking a 41% increase in aircraft laser strikes compared to the previous year. Since 2010, a total of 244 injuries have been reported, underscoring the escalating and pervasive threat. The nearly 9,500 laser strikes reported to the FAA in 2022 highlight the severity of this growing concern. The OSI Center officials underscored the significance of public awareness and reporting. They encourage individuals who witness such incidents to describe the individual, location and event, and report it to both local law enforcement and OSI, regardless of whether the aircraft is military or civilian.

lanes, emphasizing that efficient communication between pilots, command posts, OSI and local law enforcement is crucial for rapid responses to incidents.

If you or anyone you know witnessed an individual directing a laser towards an aircraft, report the incident to laserreports@faa.gov.

“The challenge is not just in reporting the incident. What makes it actionable is the pilot’s ability to specify, with a degree of certainty, a geo-coordinate from

which the laser originated,” officials said. The effect of a laser beam on pilots is like a camera flash in a pitch-black car at night, result-

21st TSC paves way for future sustainment operations with European tabletop exercise Story and photos by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command U.S. Army Europe and Africa European Theater Sustainment Tabletop Exercise was hosted by 21st Theater Sustainment Command in Wiesbaden, Oct. 2-5, to focus on large-scale operations in a contested environment and soon synchronize efforts with joint and multinational partners. “I think what’s going on here in Europe is consequential,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Ronald Ragin, commander, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “We are contested right now. We’re not doing large scale conflict, but we are moving large scale forces. The amount of forces we are moving in and out of the theater, plus all the equipment we are providing to Ukraine is probably informing the Army on how the Army needs to fight in that environment in the future; how the Pacific needs to fight in that environment in the future,” said Ragin. Lt. Col. Gregory Fassett, chief of future operations, 21st TSC, began coordinating the event back in July, starting with a team conducting interim progress reports. “We developed a working

So, we had the right energy.” Stakeholders received a shared understanding of sustainment operations and activities within the theater, held discussions to identify gaps, and developed solutions to shape the sustainment posture, ensure prolonged endurance, and extend operational reach capabilities. “We have some really talented leaders that are capable of solving problems,” said Ragin. Col. Beth Behn, deputy commander, SAG-U, said the face-toface discussions were necessary to resolve issues. “A chance to work with all these people and strengthen those relationships is only going to set us up to be even more successful,” said Behn. The tabletop exercise set the stage for a similar upcoming exercise to include joint services in November or December of this year.

In-service training enables resilience in Child and Youth Services staff

Yessica Garcia, a Child and Youth Programs assistant from the Wetzel Child Development Center, completing a team-building exercise at the Child and Youth Services in-service training day, which provided a comprehensive training experience, at the Landstuhl Youth Center, Oct. 6.

Story and photos by Mary Del Rosario U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Maya Angelou once said, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” This sentiment was put to the test on approximately 200 occasions as staff from U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s Child and Youth Programs gathered for a Child and Youth Services in-service training day Oct. 6 at the Landstuhl Youth Center, to provide a comprehensive training experience and build resiliency. “This dedicated day allows our CYS staff to enhance their personal and professional development,” said Melissa Gironda, lead training specialist. “Additionally, this event fosters a sense of camaraderie, recogni-

tion and teamwork among our staff members, creating a supportive and collaborative work environment.” A wide range of training sessions, spanning from 4H implementation to “How to respond to unsafe behavior,” were among those taught to staff from the child development centers and school age centers. “To support our staff’s professional and personal development, we offer a range of trainings tailored to their needs and interests,” said Gironda. However, a vital component of this in-service training was the inclusion of resiliency training delivered by the R2 (Ready and Resilience) Performance Center. This organization provides customized resilience training and education to Soldiers designed to build unit cohesion.

Child and Youth Services staff with their award after winning a team-building exercise at the Child and Youth Services in-service training day at the Landstuhl Youth Center, Oct. 6.

“We designed this training to give the people who have the utmost impact on children the opportunity to connect with different resilience skills,” said Lloyd Scharneck, master resilience trainer and expert for R2 Program. Throughout the training, CYS staff engaged in self-reflective exercises, examining the impact of their roles at youth centers, child development centers and school age centers. They took part in group-building activities that emphasized the importance of effective communication and teamwork in successfully accomplishing tasks. Drawing from a curriculum originally designed for educators, the Army resilience program teaches valuable skills to help children cultivate adaptability in their daily lives. Kevin Breisch, director of Sembach CDC, echoed Scharneck’s sentiments. “We are continuing the message of mental health awareness and resiliency to our CYS workforce,” he said. “We also focus on the professional growth

and development of our employees to give them the tools necessary to provide the best quality of care and customer service to our children and patrons.” CYS trainers and directors have been preparing for the in-service training day since July. “Though we have been planning for this training since this past summer, we started planning for these types of trainings since the beginning of this year,” said Breisch. He attributes the dedication of the staff, who put in extensive hours while also shouldering the responsibilities of being caregivers and educators, to the importance of safeguarding their mental well-being. With a jam-packed training schedule, CYS staff emerged from the training feeling empowered and equipped with the tools to successfully navigate the challenges of a demanding classroom. “As a lead child and youth program assistant, I need to be resilient for my team so I can better support

them because if I, as a leader, am not, how can they be?” said Rex Darnell, Child and Youth Program assistant at Landstuhl Child Development Center 1. “This is also why a leadership course has been beyond valuable to me. It is great to have training and guidance because being a leader is not always easy to navigate,” he added. Yessica Garcia, a Child and Youth Programs assistant at the Wetzel CDC agreed. “This training was helpful for me as a caregiver because when I can successfully self-regulate, I can help the children do the same.” The next scheduled training, which is evolving based on feedback and analyzing staff needs, is scheduled for Dec. 15. Child and Youth Services deliver high-quality programs designed to benefit military children, youth, and students while simultaneously aiding the Army Family by mitigating conflicts that can arise between mission readiness and parental responsibilities.

We have vetted people and course material to make sure students would not get misinformation.” The skills and knowledge gained through Herc U programs empower individuals to excel in their roles, benefitting both the military and the broader professional community. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual support, strengthening the overall mission of the base. Army recruitment opportunities call Ukrainian to serve Story and photo by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command At 19 years old, U.S. Army Pfc. Andrii Sydoruk was a nightshift grocery worker in Los Angeles, when he was shaken by the attack on Mariupol, Ukraine, where his fiancé and her family were living on Feb. 24, 2022. “It didn’t feel real,” said Sydoruk. On March 2, the city was disconnected from the rest of the world. “They cut electricity, phone connection, gas…everything,” said Sydoruk. Sydoruk tried reaching his fiancé, Sonia, by calling friends who were trying to get out of the city and asking volunteers aiding the invasion, but no one had seen or heard from her. “For two months, I wouldn’t know what is happening with her,” said Sydoruk. “I couldn’t do anything. I still had to go to work, but I was just like a robot.” He finally got a phone call from her after she borrowed a phone and found connection. “The call was a few minutes, but hearing her voice again, I was happy,” said Sydoruk. Soon after the call, Sonia and her family moved to the Czech Republic, and Sydoruk flew out to see them in the summer. Due to his green card restriction, he couldn’t stay long and was faced with a challenge. “I was in a choice of what to do next,” said Sydoruk. “I needed to work, and I wanted to be with her.” Sydoruk’s mother insisted that he join the U.S. Army since moving

from Mohyliv-Podil's'kyi, Ukraine, to California, with his grandmother and brother in 2018. “The Army gave me a good opportunity,” said Sydoruk. On Nov. 1, 2022, he saw a recruiter and was offered Germany as his first duty location, but that was not his only incentive. “Citizenship was the case, getting a job was the case, and future education,” said Sydoruk. joining the medical field like most of his family members, and he is also training for a 10-mile run with his unit. “He’s taking to the Army well,” said Capt. Christoper Lee, commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 519th Hospital Center, 30th MB. From Basic Combat Training

to Advanced Individual Training, and now performing his military duties in Germany, Sydoruk says the Army is getting better with every step. From drill sergeants to sponsors and command leadership, he understands the lifelong community. “Here it’s like real family,” said Sydoruk.

AFSOC embraces extended reality to enhance readiness by Capt. Amy Rasmussen Air Force Special Operations Command Public Affairs Extended reality, or XR, is revolutionizing the way Air Force Special Operations Command is approaching training and readiness. XR is an umbrella term that encompasses virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality to create a spectrum of experiences that range from fully virtual environments to overlays of digital content onto the real world. These technologies manipulate our perception of reality, hence the term extended. The manipulation of reality is at the core of XR, and it’s transforming the training landscape of AFSOC. The XR training program’s mission is to provide Air Commandos the ability to conduct repetitive readiness training anyplace at any time through secure, autonomous learning distribution and reporting across all command disciplines. The vision is equally ambitious: to be a training program that employs virtual, mixed, and augmented training methods, producing warfighters with greater skillset competencies and proficiency in a more realistic environment, at a reduced cost and on a shortened timeline. In the beginning of FY23, AFSOC established an XR cross-functional team dedicated to creating an XR training framework for the entire command. “Our first step as a command was to admit we had fallen behind in the evolution of training technology,” said Capt. Kyle Schoonover, chief of AFSOC XR training program. “In true AFSOC fashion, in just a few months we went from this realization to producing a major-command-wide framework capable of incorporating all existing XR technologies as well as charting a path forward for future development in the years to come.” This framework operates on a crawl, walk, run strategy, composed of four distinct lines of effort: LOE 1: Virtual Hangar The foundational effort for XR in AFSOC focuses on initial qualification academic training for all aircrew support and mission support personnel, including maintenance and Mission Sustainment Teams. A prime example of this is the Virtual Hangar initiative by AFSOC A4, logistics and engineering. This innovative program leverages VR to enhance AC-130J, MC-130J, CV-22 and munitions maintenance workforce training. The Virtual Hangar offers com-

prehensive instructor tools and custom-built learning modules, ranging from checklist execution to 3D-modeled schematic overlays. LOE 2: NexGen Instructor AFSOC plans to incorporate VR into all Flying Training Units responsible for training AFSOC aircrew. Training modules will cover the academic phases of the FTU syllabi such as academics on aircraft systems and mission equipment. Collaborative partnerships with other major commands will be pursued when appropriate, and pathfinding will be the norm when required.

tant locations like the Indo-Pacific region. Meanwhile, the pilot’s visor reveals a digital wingman controlled by a ground-based XR device. The goal is to replicate any battlespace via XR technology back at the home station. “AFSOC’s XR framework provides every unit in the command with a readily digestible and easily repeatable strategy to modernize their training through next-generation methodologies of instruction,” Schoonover said. The AFSOC XR Training Framework’s implementation is ongoing. While teams across

AFSOC continue to work through LOE 1 by immersing in VR and Virtual Hangars, LOE 2 is on the horizon with small group XR testing sessions with the AC-130J FTU planned for Summer 2024 and the C-146 FTU planned for Fall 2024. As investment into the training program framework continues, the line of efforts will gain momentum. “AFSOC is heavily invested in enhancing readiness and training through initiatives like XR,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, AFSOC commander. “The use of XR in training allows Air Commandos to experience highly realistic simula-

tions of complex scenarios, missions, and environments they may encounter in real-world operations. This practice is paramount as we prepare for current and future operating environments. I’m excited to see where this program goes and we will be ready to build upon each line of effort as resources become available.” With a comprehensive XR Training Framework in place, AFSOC is poised to transform its training methodologies, ensuring that Air Commandos are better prepared and equipped for strategic competition.

LOE 3: Fusion & Integration The integration of XR into operational units is a pivotal aspect of AFSOC’s strategy, with a particular emphasis on mission events. These events can range from emulated flight of AFSOC aircraft, to special tactics, to our medical community across the entire continuum of patient care. LOE 4: The Future Fight The pinnacle of AFSOC’s XR Training Framework envisions the utilization of Augmented Reality for aircrew and special tactics teams. Imagine a CV-22 pilot flying over Melrose Air Force Range in New Mexico while their visor displays real-world terrain from dis-

US Soldier represents Germany at World Kickboxing Union Championship by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Tom Neal, operations sergeant, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, will compete in the World Championship in Calgary, Canada, Oct. 16-22. Neal practices martial arts under the German branch of Ryukyu Tanzenbukan, a style of karate, and will compete in the traditional weapons and forms categories. Earlier this year, Neal received his invitation to join the German National Karate Team after qualifying as one of the top ranked individuals in a separate competition. Typically, the team is made up of local nationals, but Neal earned his spot on the team fair and square. “It’s a great honor to represent another country,” said Neal. Neal’s career in martial arts began nearly 30 years ago in 1995 when he witnessed a presentation of a local Kenpo karate dojo. “It was then that I knew I wanted to pursue the martial arts,” said Neal. “I was drawn to the physical skill of it, training and conditioning the body to perform magnificent feats through form and fighting. Likewise, the mental and spiritual development involved in the dedication, resilience, and focus fostered during training has been a consistent benefit.” Neal is trained in much more than karate. He also practiced Taekwondo, Kuk Sool Won, and

currently practices Okinawan Kobudo, and Okinawan GojuRyu. For the last 10 years, he has taught all ages and currently teaches at the Loveless Karate Academy, a local academy in Kaiserslautern. “Karate is an endless study, the more one learns, the more one realizes that there is much more to learn,” said Neal. Neal is an accomplished fighter from Charleston, South Carolina. While serving in the Army, he competed in five

me many places that I could meet people from around the world and continue training,” said Neal. In 2006, Neal enlisted as military police, and as he promoted over the years, Neal changed career paths to transportation management coordinator. He currently works in logistics and planning at 21st TSC and recently coordinated the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition in the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas. Neal states the Army benefits, fitness facilities, and career paths contributed to his extraordinary journey in martial arts. “It has allowed me the flexibility to train and study at my dojo, as well as the time off to travel to tournaments and to Asia to train in the Ryukyu Islands,” said Neal. Rest assured, there are a number of valuable resources to ease your way and later let you explore and venture out on discoveries throughout the region, state or even the Federal Republic. “Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz!” is a program initiated by the state government to let you experience German life from day one. Together with participating villages, it offers information on local events and festivities, where to find shops and restaurants, and activities and clubs to engage in. The program also conducts events and highlights of its own, such as a monthly get-together, a German style “Stammtisch” where Germans and Americans can meet in

a casual group near Kaiserslautern/ Ramstein, Baumholder and even Spangdahlem. Other activities, such as culinary hikes, a recent GermanAmerican student art exhibit and excursions around the state are part of its itinerary. Watch for further details listed on their website and Facebook pages. Window to Rheinland-Pfalz is a drop-in point with valuable resources about the local area and the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. come to answer any questions you might have. The German-American Community Office just celebrated its 20th anniversary and serves as a drop-in point for Americans and Germans alike. It has valuable information on topics such as proper trash separation, can assist with translations and can point you in the right direction with a treasure chest full of useful information. The Atlantic Academy has been in Kaiserslautern since 1996 and is funded by the State of RheinlandPfalz. It aims to contribute to the promotion of the transatlantic commu-

nity of values and provide a forum for discussion. It also offers political education events focused on transatlantic relations and is located in the same building as above mentioned GACO. The German-American & International Women’s Club offers women (and men) of various nations to get to know each other and spend valuable time together. It holds an annual Pfennig Bazaar, the largest in the region, every spring and also offers language and cooking courses, trips and other events throughout the year.

The Docu Center in Ramstein has an interesting display on 70 years presence of U.S. Forces which significantly shaped the region. Its four containers are themed as “Infotainer”, “Welcome to the Club”, a place of solitude dedicated to the Flugtag Disaster. Displays on special topics change throughout the year and is currently showing a special exhibition “The Air Base in Pop Culture.” It is always a great idea to ask co-workers that have been here longer or your local national colleagues for assistance in everyday challenges or advice on German peculiarities. Last but not least, keep an eye on our weekly “Unterwegs” (Page 18) and Community Events calendars for exciting local events. Stay tuned for a potpourri of items in our “ABC in KMC” series or check out the monthly “State of the Art” features familiarizing you with the 16 states in Germany. Soon you’ll venture and explore on your own to make the best out of your time in the amazing state of Rheinland-Pfalz in the heart of Europe.

2. Horror Fest at Movie Park Germany, Bottrop-Kirchellen. Photo by Movie Park Germany

in search of Halloween fun don’t have to look far. The country hosts a wide range of events for couples, families and singles. Here are five places to start! 1. Burg Frankenstein For an authentically German – and terrifying Halloween – event, look no further than Halloween at Burg Frankenstein, otherwise known as Castle Frankenstein. Whether or not Mary Shelley was influenced by this distinct castle is still a controversial topic, but it doesn’t stop the event from being thrillingly scary. We’re talking the world’s only Halloween party in a thousand-year-old castle ruin! An interactive experience, visitors get the chance to explore this historic castle while actors will roam around looking for willing victims. For an authentic experience explore the countryside surrounding Burg Frankenstein before the event. Please note that large backpacks are not allowed on the premises. Burg Frankenstein also offers a special kids program. Burg Frankenstein is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away from Kaiserslautern. 2. Movie Park Horror Fest If you’re looking for an immersive experience for Halloween,

then Movie Park Horror Fest is the place to be throughout October and into early November. Located north of Essen about 3.5 hours from Kaiserlslautern, the typically family friendly park will be transformed into Horrorwood studios. Expect to be besieged by monsters, zombies and other gruesome creatures as night falls over the park. The park has hosted Horror Fest for more than 20 years, and this year’s event features its famous horror labyrinth (tickets are required). Afterwards you can take a calm nap at the local horror hostel, unless flesh-eating monsters find you first, that is. The park offers its own special accommodation for the event. 3. Burg Satzvey Halloween Located 2.5 hours north of Kaiserslautern, the Eifel castle of Burg Satzvey is an excellent place for a Halloween adventure. This is the way to do Halloween. Families are welcome in the early afternoon for some “less scary” fun. But when the sun goes down at 6 p.m., the good (and more scary) times begin. Visitors are greeted by a spectral figure who haunts the lake outside the castle. It gets better inside. Mazes, monsters, jump scares, the works. Afterward, there’s an outstanding party that lasts almost until November. If you act soon enough, you might

even be able to book a room in the castle. 4. Tucherland Halloween Tucherland is Nuremberg’s only indoor playground with a huge outdoor area as well. Fun for the whole family, and a jaunty 3.5 hours east of Kaiserslautern, this playground turns dark on Halloween and becomes something altogether more sinister. But not too sinister. Kids can get their face painted, carve pumpkins to ward off evil spirits and

hear ghost stories at night. The park’s doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the Halloween fun starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free for kids under two years old, and costs €12.90 for children ages 2-17. Admission for adults (16-64) costs €8.90. 5. Samhain at the Celtic village of Donnersberg On any given autumn day, the Celtic village in Steinbach makes for a fantastic day trip, especially since it is only 30 minutes from

Kaiserslautern. The village does Halloween right, too, with a fantastic Samhain celebration on October 31 (from 5-11 p.m. this year). The Samhain tradition has existed in Celtic cultures for thousands of years, and marks the entry of the darker months. In Steinbach, guests will be treated to food, drink, a bonfire, a spooky Celtic tour and much more. If you’re looking for an ancient alternative to a traditional Halloween festival, this is it!
