Virtus Perdurat by Brig. Gen. C.K. Hyde 86th Airlift Wing commander
Commentary
O
ur wing motto, “Virtus Perdurat,” which translates to “enduring courage,” exemplifies our commitment to the combat airlift ethos — there is no Airman, Soldier, Sailor or Marine ever alone while we are on duty. It defines the excellence we expect of our Airmen and reminds us of the proud heritage upon which we stand. This year, the 86th Airlift Wing focus is on readiness, and recently, Team Ramstein’s readiness was put to the test in the initial response to the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. When directed, our wing and partners swiftly and professionally responded to evacuate Americans from Tripoli, returned our ambassador and three other fallen comrades with dignity, and cared for the U.S. Embassy members at Ramstein. Team Ramstein came together to execute myriad missions, and I’d like to highlight a few of the many outstanding Airmen who lived up to our motto, “Virtus Perdurat,” in what was a stark reminder of the cost of freedom. • Staf f Sgts . They arrived in Tripoli on the first aircraft to land in Libya, an 86th AW C-130J Super Hercules, and provided six hours of close-in security for a C-17 MEDEVAC and follow-on C-130J missions.

As the medical crew director, she led the aeromedical team that evacuated and cared for four wounded patients on the flight from Tripoli to Ramstein. • And y Dav is and Senio r M as ter Sgt. M ichael M o rgan, 8 6 th L o gis tics Read ines s Sq uad ro n, our installation deployment officer and installation deployment NCO, rapidly stood up our deployment control center to receive evacuated embassy personnel. In conjunction with our 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing partners, they provided the behind the scenes logistics support for all arrival and departure activities. • Firs t L t. Along with their Army partners, the team followed strict protocols and provided dignified mortuary support for the U.S. ambassador and three embassy personnel killed in the attacks until they were returned home with honor. • Airm en f ro m the 8 6 th Co ntingency Aerom ed ical Staging Facility skillfully transported and provided en route care for the wounded from Ramstein to Landstuhl Regional
Medical Center and back to Ramstein for follow-on flights to CONUS. • L t. Col . Davi d Z on ies , a traum a s urgeon , and his multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, performed three surgeries over several days on two critically wounded patients. Staff Sgt. Leteya Tsonetokoy, an 86th Medical Squadron operating room technician, assisted trauma surgeons in their lifesaving work. • M as ter Sgt. Jay B erry , 86t h Airlif t Wing Prot oc ol s uperintend ent, planned, coordinated and executed dignified transfer ceremonies, including the plane-side departure ceremony led by the deputy secretary of state and attended by the consul general, commander, USAFRICOM, and the commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe/ AFAFRICA. He ensured a dignified departure from Ramstein and arrival at Andrews Air Force Base for national ceremonies. Thank you to these 86th AW Airmen and the many other unnamed Airmen and partners from Team Ramstein for your enduring courage after our diplomatic facilities in Libya were attacked. For 70 years, the 86th Airlift Wing and our predecessors have served with “Virtus Perdurat” in every air power engagement since World War I. We still live in a dangerous world and face enemies who despise our values of freedom, democracy and equality, but with a tradition of valor and commitment to readiness, we will continue to deliver unmatched combat airlift and strategic installation capabilities.

Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and U.S. Navy Adm. James Stavridis, the U.S. European Command Commander and NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, met with “European Defender” Soldiers with 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command here Oct. 30. During his portion of the visit, Gen. Dempsey was provided a tour of the Israeli air base where 10th AAMDC Soldiers work and live during their stay for the joint multi-national exercise Austere Challenge 2012. Gen. Dempsey presented coins to selected Soldiers for excellence as well as giving on-the-spot coins for Soldiers executing their duties. For Staff Sgt. Christopher Schwope, a battle noncommissioned officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 10th AAMDC, receiving the chairman’s coin was something to be proud of. “It was nice to be recognized by the chairman and my leadership for the hard work that my Soldiers and I have put into the exercise,” said Schwope. Soldiers with the command also received
commander’s coins from Adm. Stavridis and listened as he addressed troops on the importance and value of their participation in Austere Challenge 2012. “This exercise, Austere Challenge, that you all are participating in is our signature exercise. It reflects the work of some 100,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and civilians working together,” said Stavridis. “I just want to say thank you; I appreciate everything you do.” The visit by the two senior leaders not only allowed U.S. and Israeli forces to appreciate the importance of the exercise but also served to boost morale. “The visit helped to show the Soldiers that this is a significant mission with huge implications. By having leaders at their level visit it shows that not only are the [ chairman and the EUCOM commander] focused on the exercise but that they truly care about the Soldiers. Taking the time to visit and meet the Soldiers really motivated the Soldiers here and let them know just how important their work is,” said Sgt. Maj. K enneth K unzler, the noncommissioned officer in charge of communications for the 10th AAMDC. Soldiers with the 10th AAMDC are scheduled to return to their home station in K aiserslautern, Germany upon completion of the exercise in November.
Who is a veteran? There have been many words written by many scholarly individuals describing their version of who a veteran is and what they stand for. Among these many definitions, there is always one common thread. A veteran is a person who has valiantly served his country. It is never to be forgotten that a veteran made a contract with America to do whatever he or she can to ensure American citizens are protected from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. This contract fulfills the dominant creed of our constitution, which was written so many years ago. The American veteran has met this challenge and has done so with honor. With rare exception, the veteran has earned the respect and admiration of American society. The veteran has been with us throughout the years of American existence. He was with us during the great civil war, which cost more lives than any other war fought by American servicemen and women. The veteran was with America during the K orean conflict in which more than 54,000 American lives were lost. He was with us during the Vietnam conflict which cost more than 58,000 lives. The veteran was present during conflict in the middle east, and still is in the very far-away land of Afghanistan. During all these wars, the veteran has always remained steadfast, always ready to place his or her life on the line in defense of freedom and the American way of life. It is always the veteran who leads the way in protecting the citizens that make up our great nation. I have asked myself on occasion why veterans would join the military. In the beginning, it may have been for a sense of adventure; to see the world and to experience something new. Surely, that wander-lust suddenly changed when they learned what they were doing was crucial to American survival. Many Americans chose a different path because they were not required to enter military service. School classmates of mine went onto other professions; bankers, teachers, lawyers, construction workers, etc. That is one of the great things of America; we can choose to pursue a life of our desire. Freedom of choice is what sets the United States of America apart from many other countries in this world. Unfortunately, in order for these personal freedoms to be possible, a great deal of protection is needed. Freedom is never free. There is a difference today in today’s military as compared to the veteran of yesteryear. However, the bravery and determination of a veteran has not changed. The American military member has always risen to the occasion; always providing whatever is needed to protect America. Y es today’s fighting person has the benefit of better technology; better equipment and logistical support. Y et, the overriding factor is that whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice; the veteran stands tall and ready. Today, I stand very proud of America and what America has accomplished in the last 236 years. I also render a proud salute to all those veterans that made these accomplishments possible. God please continue to bless the veteran and the United States of America.

Local veterans make history, NCOs get opportunity to form Kaiserslautern Military hear Airman’s perspective Community Retiree Council by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Last week, more than a dozen retired service members and two widows signed up to represent the first retiree council for the K aiserslautern Military Community. Veterans from both the Army and Air Force formed the council in order to work together and assist the retired community. It’s a chance for veterans to help other veterans and to integrate their actions in support of the activeduty force. Members of the council represent many veterans who continue to give back to the community even after serving many years on active duty. The recently formed council is headed by council President Luis de Anrade, a retired Air Force senior master sergeant, Vice President É ugene Marietta, a retired Army master sergeant, and Secretary Norm Raynal, a retired DoD civilian. The other members and their retired ranks are: Don Sanders, Air Force chief master sergeant; Ute Harris, Army sergeant major; Mike Richter, Army sergeant major; Nelida Rabassa, Army sergeant major; Rick Deppe, Air Force senior master sergeant; Lyn Cammack, Air Force master sergeant; Robert Ford,
Army sergeant 1st class; Mike Vidaurri, Air Force master sergeant; Francine Sandoval and Jeanette Barbato. These veterans are proud to still be serving their military family in any capacity and will be around the community in the next few weeks. They plan on reaching out to the nearly 2,000 retired members in the K aiserslautern Military Community, in an overall effort to increase the awareness of their existence and at the same time capture as many members as possible. The veterans recently appointed to the K aiserslautern Military Community Retiree Council may not solve all the problems that exist, but they will do their best to point those needing help in the right direction or get them the information they need. K eep an eye out for members of the K aiserslautern Military Community Retiree Council. These veterans have all retired members’ interests in mind and they have stepped up to help the military community out. Thank you all for what you do in serving this great nation. As an Airman, have you wanted to be able to voice your opinion to a noncommissioned officer, but found yourself without an opportunity? Airmen wishing to do so are able to volunteer for the Airman’s Panel, held once per class cycle at the NCO Academy on K apaun Air Station, Germany. The panel is a 45-minute session that gives partial insight on 360-degree leadership for NCOs going through the academy. “A huge part of that perspective is sitting down with motivated Airmen throughout the K aiserslautern Military Community,” said Tech. Sgt. K arin Burke, NCOIC of the NCOA. “This session allows students to be mentored by motivated Airmen and provides them with an outlook that we often times fail to see; our Airmen are doing amazing things and have great ideas. This perspective will help us all become better leaders for our Air Force.” This panel gives all Airmen, including those who just arrived to their first duty station and those about to become NCOs themselves, the opportunity to explain traits the ideal NCO has. “I wanted to be able to give the first-term Airman’s feedback to NCOs on what they could work on and what NCOs are doing well,” said Airman 1st Class K hrystian Ball, 786th Force Support Squadron evaluations technician. “It’s just really good to know that the new Airman’s voice is being heard.” Airmen provide feedback on areas where NCOs are doing well, or areas that could be better. “The Airmen’s Perspective is an opportunity to gain an understanding of what today’s Airmen face and their experiences with the NCOs that they work with,” Burke said. “These Airmen provide candid views and observations they have
made regarding what their leaders are doing well and areas that they can improve.” NCOs learn a variety of things from this panel, ranging from how involved to be in their Airmen’s work and personal lives, to their training. “I learned that Airmen seem to want to do the right thing, but their actions are greatly influenced by what we, as their leaders do and teach them,” said Tech. Sgt. Patrick Haney, 721st Aerial Port Squadron. Airmen who make up the panel realize that what they have to say influences how these NCOs go about treating those they lead, Ball said. “The NCOA showcases the fact that NCOs are really looking for feedback on how they can develop and build the strongest unit possible,” he said. “It was really good to be able to speak to NCOs who are willing to learn how they can be better leaders.” For Ball, the most important thing an NCO could take from the panel was how NCOs can assist Airmen to do their job, he said. “Airmen hear throughout their career that they are what makes the Air Force run,” Ball said. “It’s great knowing we have the NCOs there to assist in making us become the best we can be.” Haney noted at the end of the session, that Airmen today are different from when he joined the Air Force. “The most important thing I learned is that Airmen are coming in with a lot more education than we did when I was an Airman,” Haney said. “Airmen are already much more in line with the Air Force core values than a few years ago. Overall, the Airmen coming in these days are amazing.” Airmen interested in sharing their opinion on their version of the ideal NCO can volunteer during the next class cycle that comes through the NCOA.

“The most valued experience here is integrating with ( the Army) before going into deployed operations,” said 1st Lt. Marshall Wills, 2nd ASOS joint tactical air controller. The 2nd ASOS supplied 23 joint terminal air controllers and one radio maintainer to support the joint training. The 2nd ASOS supported the 2nd Cavalry Regiment by advising and assisting the integration of airpower into their ground maneuvers with controlled air strikes. The mission of the 2nd ASOS is to provide superior U.S. Air Force tactical air control party liaison and control to the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. JTACs assist in mission planning through the integration of close combat power air support aircraft and surface fires, and by providing support to ground scheme combat maneuver units on today’s battlefield around the world. Airmen 1st class Aaron Corrales and Travis Lowe, 2nd ASOS TACPs, who had been assigned to the squadron for about six months, were also involved in the training. This was their first major exercise with the Army.
“This has been a challenge,” Corrales said. “We’ve been learning how to interact with the Army and getting out of our comfort zone.” The JMRX is hosted by the U.S. Army Europe’s Joint Multinational Training Command and Joint Multinational Readiness Center at Grafenwö hr and Hohenfels training areas, Germany. It is the only U.S. Army overseas combat training facility. Exercises such as this, highlight the decisive action training environment rotation with multinational forces to gain a wider perspective. It is designed to prepare coalition forces through a combination of offensive, defensive and stability operations appropriate to the mission and the environment. Saber Junction 2012 is a large-scale, joint, multinational, military exercise involving approximately 1,700 Army and Air Force personnel, and 18 coalition forces. Taylor 21st TSC Public Affairs A 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldier’s road to competing in the Army’s premier Soldier skills competition, the Department of the Army Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Y ear Best Warrior Competition, has paved the way for him to become a better leader. “The Army has a book definition for leadership, but I don’t think that we as Soldiers should limit leader-
ship to the book definition,” said Spc. Richard Shepard. “We all have different outlooks and experiences, and if we can offer something that can help each other grow, then that is great leadership.” Shepard, an intelligence analyst for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, tested his Soldier skills against 23 of the Army’s best warriors in October at Fort Lee, Va. His accolades up to that point were winning best warrior competitions at the company, command and U.S. Army Europe levels in a nine-

He didn’t win at the DA level, but the 22-year-old attributes part of his iron dedication to his life prior to the military, saying that being responsible for taking care of his two brothers while his parents worked taught him things that he now puts to use. A year into his enlistment, Shepard’s leaders took notice and sent him to his company’s Soldier of the month board. “What actually stuck out to me about Shepard was that I noticed that he was one of those people who liked to go to school, liked to study and liked to learn new things. I thought [ well] those are some pretty good attributes for someone who has to prepare for a board,” said Staff Sgt. Travis R. Andrews, Shepard’s supervisor, an intelligence analyst with the 21st TSC. “I figured if he just does his studying and focuses on the board the same way, then he could be really successful.” Shepard won the Soldier of the month and was now set on a path he hadn’t foreseen. “When I first started I didn’t expect to go as far as I did, I just wanted to go to the board and do my best and in turn gain that experience and knowledge that comes with attending a military board,” said Shepard. According to him, he thought the ensuing command-wide board was the highest level and the end of the competitions. That event pushed Shepard to his maximum both mentally and physically. There was a 12-mile ruck-march, zeroing and qualifying with a weapon, combatives and day and night land navigation. “The 21st TSC board was very difficult, but I think, that the way it was set up, it definitely played a big role in preparing me for the USAREUR board,” said Shepard. He won the USAREUR best warrior title and immediately began a month-long preparation for the DA competition. “I was glad that I had won the board, but I figured that the next level would be more difficult, so I didn’t really have time to celebrate if I wanted to ensure that I did my best during my next challenge,” said Shepard. Shepard traveled to Grafenwoehr for three weeks of training at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center to prepare for the Army level competition. After which, he had a week of rest

before venturing to Fort Lee, Va. To prepare for boards, Shepard said he breaks up his study material and studies at 15 minute intervals, sandwiched between short breaks. According to him, this method ensures that he has an opportunity to retain the information he learns, instead of overloading his brain. “The way I think about it when preparing is, you know that the competition only lasts four days, four days is nothing compared to the amount of years you have on earth, so that’s just four days of pushing yourself to as far as you can mentally and physically so just get out there and do it,” said Shepard. “During one of the competitions I found out that one of the Soldiers competing actually had cancer prior to the competition and was recovering from treatment while he was competing and I thought that was awesome,” he said. “Y ou see people from all walks of life with different personal situations, and if they can get out there and do it then why can’t I?” Shepard said the Army competition was different than all the boards. “The biggest difference was on the first day,” Shepard stated. “When we got there the first thing they did was give all the competitors three Soldiers who we were responsible for, and we had to look out for them throughout the entire competition.” Although Shepard didn’t win, he feels he’s still a winner because of all he learned along the way. “I wasn’t disappointed to find out that I didn’t win. I am just grateful for even making it this far and being able to see all the things I’ve seen and learn all the stuff I’ve learned along the way,” Shepard said. “I’m happy, because now I can take back my experiences and share them with others.” Shepard credits his leadership with helping him on the road to achieving his goals, and with less than 24 months in the Army, he is now in a better position to get promoted and use those newfound leadership skills and experiences to take care of Soldiers.

AF senior leaders approve doctrine restructure by Phil Berube Air University Public Affairs M AX WE L L AIR FORCE B ASE , Ala. (AFNS) — Officials at the LeMay Center for Doctrine Development and Education at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., announce that by next fall, Air Force doctrine will be restructured, streamlined and accessible to anyone with an e-reader, smartphone or tablet. Dubbed “Doctrine Next,” the initiative overhauls doctrine development processes to better reflect Air Force and Joint “best practices” in a much timelier manner while reducing subject matter redundancy and repetitive content. In early October, the LeMay Center presented Doctrine Next to senior Air Force leaders at the annual Doctrine Summit held at the Air Force
Academy. The leaders unanimously supported the initiative and tasked the Center to proceed with immediate implementation. “Doctrine Next is a totally new way we will develop and present our doctrine,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III. “Any opportunity we have to streamline and improve the timeliness of Air Force doctrine will have an immediate impact on the way we team with Joint and Coalition partners.” Currently, the complete list of Air Force doctrine includes 32 singularly focused publications that amass more than 2,600 pages. Doctrine Next dramatically reduces that page count and aligns the doctrine into five unifying volumes and 28 supporting annexes. The five volumes will be Air Force Basic Doctrine; Leadership and Force Development; Commanding and Organizing Air
First AF amputee pilot nominated for DOD disability award L AU GH L IN AIR FORCE B ASE , T ex as (AFNS) — A Laughlin Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training graduate was one of two Airmen nominated for the 2012 Department of Defense Employee/ Service Member with a Disability Award. Capt. Ryan McGuire, with Air Mobility Command, lost his leg in a boating accident on Lake Amistad in 2009 while in pilot training here. He went on to become the first Air Force amputee to earn a pilot rating. “Ryan’s perseverance was always inspirational for all of us,” said Col. Tom Murphy, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. “This is another example of him doing great things.” McGuire was yanked from a boat traveling at 40 miles per hour. He was lifted out of the boat by a rope that was tied to an inner tube when the wind caught the tube, pulling him out. His hip was dislocated, pelvis was fractured and his right foot mangled. The then-lieutenant McGuire was eventually rescued from the lake, taken by ambulance to Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio, Texas, and 10 hours after the accident, arrived by helicopter at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Attempts by doctors to repair the foot ended in failure and much of his leg below the knee was removed. “It was so surreal,” McGuire said. “It probably really didn’t hit home until I woke up after the surgery. I woke up after and my mom started crying. I pretty much knew then it wasn’t just a bad dream.”
Determined not to lose his dream of flying, McGuire began the painful road to recovery. “I never wanted to give up my dream,” he said. After completing rehabilitation using prosthetics, McGuire completed the 26.2 mile Bataan Memorial Death March, earned three medals at the 2010 Warrior Games and ran the full Air Force marathon in under five hours, earning honors as the 2010 Air Education and Training Command Athlete of the Y ear. After appealing to the Air Force medical continuation board, which had originally deemed him as unsuited for continued service, he received word in 2010 that he would be returning to pilot training. “His achievements prove hard work and dedication make anything possible,” said Senior Master Sgt. Diana Gonzalez, the Air Force Evaluation and Recognitions Programs branch superintendent. “McGuire is an inspiration for others, illustrating what someone can achieve, regardless of physical disabilities.” McGuire and Christopher Randall, with the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, will be honored at the 32nd Annual DOD Disability Award ceremony, slated for later this year. Gen. Tom Andersen, commander of the LeMay Center. Airmen should start seeing newly formatted annexes by May 2013, with full implementation not later than Oct. 1, 2013.
DOD issues request for new mobility applications, devices by Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service WASH INGT ON — Service members could be downloading applications for government BlackBerrys, iPhones, Androids and other “mobility devices” by the beginning of next year, said Air Force Maj. Gen. Robert E. Wheeler, the deputy chief information officer for the department. The goal, he said, is to have the “military app store” set up by early 2013. “It all depends on if we get a good bid,” Wheeler explained in an interview. The request for procurement closes out at the end of the year, and “it should not take long” to put the store in play once the decision is made, he added. Wheeler said the needs of the department are at the core of the request. “We’re looking at things from a ‘ three-bin’ perspective,” he added. The first bin, he said, contains mobility devices that don’t need to connect with a DOD official or classified network. These include devices used for training, communications in an unclassified nonsecure realm, research and so on, he said. He said the second bin holds those devices that are connected to the secure but unclassified network. Today, these are mainly BlackBerrys, Wheeler said, but there are pilot programs incorporating Androids, iPhones and tablets in this bin. The third group connects with the classified network, he said. The department’s future “app store” will feature applications appropriate for each bin, the general said, and he expects the security performance of these items will change to encompass DOD’s strict needs. DOD personnel use 271,000 BlackBerrys alone, he noted, and Research In Motion -- the Canadian company that developed BlackBerrys — has a security protocol the department approves. “We hope other companies develop this,” Wheeler said. Overall, he said, the larger issue is “as we move forward with technology, we’re trying to make sure we are making it less costly to DOD, we’re trying to make it more secure and we’re trying to jump the productivity curve here.” Jumping the curve is key for the department and to do that, Wheeler said, the department needs to get these devices into the hands of the young men and women to whom they are second nature. The so-called digital generation is developing new uses for these devices every day, the general noted, and this has bridged into the tactical world, as well. These devices have uses “far beyond just talking to each other and e-mail,” he said. The department is “basically going for diversity in our products, and that goes back to trying to get the best price for the government and finding the most secure device,” he said. “So we will have a family of options that don’t favor any one device.”

Contracting supports Jackal Stone exercise by Rachel Clark 409th Contracting Support Brigade CROAT IA — The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s contracting partner, the 409th Contracting Support Brigade, participated in Jackal Stone 2012, a Special Operations Command Europe multinational special operations forces exercise, conducted in Croatia during September. Contracting specialists from the 409th CSB, with headquarters in K aiserslautern, Germany, provided support at five different locations across Croatia in support of the mission. The 409th CSB’s 624th Contingency Contracting Team started planning for JS12 in November 2011 and integrated with the SOCEUR logistics team to ensure that all contracting requirements for the exercise were met. “Getting our contracting teams engaged early in the planning stages ensures open communication, and leads to better strategic planning,” said Col. William Bailey, commander, 409th CSB. “Early integration is critical to the success of the mission.” The team, in conjunction with support provided by the 409th CSB’s K aiserslautern-based Theater Contracting Center, awarded six contracts worth more than $1. 9 million. “What we do as contracting specialists is critical to the mission. While supporting SOCEUR during this exercise, we weren’t necessarily in the fight but our support kept them in the fight,” said Staff Sgt. Joshua Thompson, 624th CCT. The contracts provided logistical support for approximately 1,700 personnel from 18 different NATO and partnership nations; covering everything from food, vehicles, life support services, fuel, a boat lease, and construction materials, but not without its own logistical challenges. “Locating reliable vendors in the immediate area was a challenge. Most of the supplies that we are procuring are coming from sources that are located more than 100 kilometers from where we are running operations,” said Sgt. 1st Class William Rawe, 624th CCT. JS12 was also a learning environment for newer contracting professionals. “This exercise has been an excellent opportunity for the team to gain experience with all aspects of the contracting process. They’ve been exposed to many contracting tasks,” said Maj. Jessica K ovach, contracting officer, 624th CCT leader, 903rd CCBN. New Pulaski thrift store shows spouses’ commitment by Rick Scavetta U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Cutting the ribbon on Pulaski Barracks’ new thrift store ushered in a new era to the K aiserslautern Landstuhl Spouses Association’s ongoing devotion to the K aiserslautern Military Community. Jeffrey Crisp, deputy to the U.S. Army Garrison K aiserslautern commander, joined several K LSA members for the Nov. 1 opening at Bldg. 2923, next door to the Pulaski Dental Clinic. “The K LSA and their thrift stores are an important part of our community and have been nearly half a century,” Crisp said. “We value their presence in our garrison and are proud to support their efforts.” The previous Pulaski store just didn’t have enough space, said manager Christine Bohl-Bellajaro. “We wanted to move somewhere bigger, so we can provide more for the community,” she said. Moving took volunteers two weeks of hard work, hauling inventory from their former building, a few blocks away. The local rugby team helped, muscling cabinets and heavy items before their practice, she said. On opening day, German crafts were raffled. Right away, browsing patrons found bargains. Children’s items don’t last long, Bohl-Bellajaro said. Electronics — especially transformers and 220 volt appliances — also sell fast. Newcomers often find pots, pans and dishes or other things needed while awaiting their household shipments.
Each Thursday, customers can stuff a thrift store bag and pay five dollars for whatever fits, she said. And they take in both consignments and donations from K MC members. “Sometimes people come for souvenir gifts,” Bohl-Bellajaro said. “People always are donating ‘ steins’ and other original German stuff.” But the thrift store at Pulaski and its sister shop at Landstuhl’s Wilson Barracks are more than just a place to find a deal. Proceeds are donated to K MC organizations, to include youth groups, school programs, scouting troops, chaplain’s closets and wounded warrior programs. “It fully goes back into the community,” Bohl-Bellajaro said. In 2011, they donated more than $ 184,000, according to their website. Each year, in fact, the K LSA donates thousands of dollars to local organizations — something they’ve been doing for nearly five decades. In a memo dated Sept. 18, 1963, the Army authorized the K aiserslautern Officers’ and Civilian’ Wives’ Club — the forerunner to the K LSA — to operate a thrift shop on Vogelweh, which at the time was still an Army post. The K LSA recently posted the historical document and photos from the original opening on their Facebook page. K LSA volunteers work hard but they also have fun, Bohl-Bellajaro said. “We’re a great team, devoted to giving back to the community,” she said. CCAF records update
Community College of the Air Force students may request to have their military personnel data system record updated to reflect a CCAFawarded certification. CCAF awards three certifications: Professional Manager Certification, CCAF Instructor Certification, and the CCAF Instructional Systems Development Certification. These certifications do not automatically flow to a member’s MilPDS record; however, the base education office can manually update

tudents from Ramstein Elementary School participated in a mock election Nov. 5. “We want them to know that we have the power to elect our leaders and by having a mock election they will realize that they can make
a difference one day themselves,” said Norma Lozano, RES second grade teacher. The mock election was held to educate children about the importance of voting. More than 900 children, from 4 to 8 years old, participated in the one-day mock election along with the RES teachers, administrators and parents. “Each class had an assigned time to come and vote and then we ended the day with
a patriotic program,” Lozano said. Voting times ran from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the patriotic program starting at 1:40 p.m. The program consisted of musical selections by the second grade classes, the posting and retrieving of the colors by the Ramstein American High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, and the announcement of the mock-election win-
ner by RES principal Joseph Lovett. “We have been planning the mock election and patriotic program since Constitution Day ( Sept. 17) in September,” Lozano said. “By holding the election we are trying to integrate all subjects that the kids learn in school into teaching them about the whole election process.” School subjects, such as social studies, music, art,
technology, language arts, math and character education were used to the mock election day festivities and planning processes. “It’s a unique way to teach them about democracy,” said Debra Lowder, an RES special needs teacher. “Being able to show them, even at a young age, that their voices do count lets them know that they are a part of the now and the future of America.”

Children walk in lantern processions to honor St. Martin by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Nov. 11 does not only mark the beginning of the German carnival season, it is also St. Martin’s Day. On Sunday, Germans will honor the patron of the poor and friend of the children, St. Martin. In the evenings before Nov. 11, or the night of Nov. 11, kindergarten children will walk in processions through K aiserslautern and villages in the K MC to honor Martin of Tours. They will carry their lanterns, which they made in kindergarten, and sing Martin songs. Usually, the walk starts at a church and proceeds to a public square. A man on horseback dressed like a Roman soldier, Saint Martin, will accompany the children. When they reach the square, the Martin’s bonfire will be lit and Martin’s pretzels will be distributed. Martin was born in the year 316 or 317 as the son of a Roman civil servant. At age 15, he joined the emperor’s cavalry. One cold winter day, he was riding through countryside when a shivering beggar came his way asking for alms. Since Martin had neither food nor money, he cut his robe in half with his sword and gave a piece to the freezing man. Supposedly, the following night, Jesus appeared in Martin’s dream and explained how he had been the freezing beggar, to whom he had given half his robe. This event changed the soldier’s life. He left the army, got baptized and became a student of Hilarius, Bishop of Poitiers, France. In 356, after Martin’s teacher was banned and after he failed to convert his father and others to the teachings of Hilarius, Martin left for an island near Genua, where he lived as a hermit. In 360, Martin gave up his solitary life to join Hilarius again, returning to Poitiers. In 361, he founded the first Gallic monastery in Ligugé ,

France. In 371, the clergy and the people elected him bishop of Tours. In 375, he established Marmoutier, a monastery for ascetic life and a school for bishops. Martin was still trying to evangelize pagans. On Nov. 8, 397, he died during a pastoral trip to Candes. Thousand of monks, consecrated virgins and others went to his funeral Nov. 11. Y ears later, a basilica with the St. Martin Abbey was built on top of Martin’s gravesite. K ing Chlodwig elected Martin as patron of the Francs. ing a bishop’s visit. The custom of lighting a bonfire after the lantern procession represents the beginning of festivities. In former times, most of the work on the fields had been completed and now it was time to celebrate, drink and eat. Traditionally, a fat goose and sweet bread were served. One legend says that St. Martin died after eating a whole goose at a single meal. Another legend says that Martin was hiding to avoid his election as Bishop of Tours, but chattering geese revealed his hiding place. The tradition of eating a “Martin’s goose” at this time of year has been kept. Many restaurants in the K MC will add Martin’s goose with dumplings and red cabbage to their menus. Even on Christmas, Germans like to serve goose. In K aiserslautern, the lantern procession of St. Martin’s Church starts at 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Martinsplatz at the beginning of Steinstrasse and ends in front of the Rathaus, where St. Martin will divide his coat and the bonfire will be lit. In Ramstein village, festivities will start at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Catholic church. Then the lantern procession with St. Martin on a horse accompanied by musicians will go through town. The St. Martin’s play will be preformed, the bonfire will be lit and pretzels and glühw ein will be available. In Landstuhl city, St. Martin’s parade will be held at 6 p.m. today with a play at Heilig-Geist-K irche. It will end at the Altenzentrum ( meeting place for senior citizens) with the fire and the sale of Martin’s pretzels, tea and glühw ein. In Otterbach, children and parents meet at 6 p.m. today at the Protestant church and walk over to the festgrounds, where the St. Martin’s play will be performed. In the wine village of St. Martin, south of Neustadt, the Martinus wine fest is being celebrated today through Sunday. A hobby artist market will take place 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Martin’s lantern procession with play is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Sunday. Dahn will hold its traditional Martini market with vendors and a little carnival Sunday.

Quirnbach horse market by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
E
very second Wednesday in November, the village of Quirnbach holds its traditional horse market. The event will include a horse show with awards, vendors, food specialties, musical entertainment and a raffle. “The event is based on the long market tradition our village has,” said the mayor of Quirnbach, Hans Harth. In 1444, historical documents mention the first market called “Bartholomä usmarkt.” The local church, Bartholomä us Church, was known as a place for pilgrimage. With the pilgrims the vendors came to sell all kinds of merchandise. Quirnbach turned into a community with monthly markets after the town of K usel was burnt down during the French Revolution in 1794. Consequently, the K usel markets moved to Quirnbach. According to a document dated April 26, 1799, every third day of the month a cattle market was authorized. After K usel was rebuilt, city officials wanted the markets back. However vendors and farmers from the local areas and even neighboring counties wanted to keep going to Quirnbach. In the years 1856 and 1857, 25 markets were held each year in Quirnbach. Local people made good money with the many guesthouses and inns needing to feed all the visi-

tors. Until around 1900, every second house in the village was turned into an inn. After around the middle of the 19th century, horses were not only owned by noble people but also used as draught animals by farmers. Quirnbach officials decided to hold their first horse market on Saint Martin’s Day of 1877. The date in November was a good one for farmers. The crop was in and

the financial situation was balanced. People had time to visit the horse market. They sat together, celebrated and had fun. They started having dances. At that time it still was customary for parents to engage their children ( without asking them) and the horse market turned into the “marriage market.” Also, the village asked the government to give authorization to hold a lottery, where people could win household items and agricultural machines. The main prizes were horses. The first time, 5,000 lottery tickets were sold. In 1892, 24,000 tickets were sold and in 1893, more than 300 ticket vendors traveled through the Pfalz to sell tickets. After World War II and due to a growing motorization of agriculture, the cattle and horse market lost its importance. Better streets allowed

farmers to visit their cattle dealers at any time and not only during the market. Soon Bartholomä usmarkt turned into a village carnival. In the beginning of the 1980s, community officials, local clubs and business people helped to revive the horse market and the lottery. Lottery tickets will be sold until 9 p.m. Wednesday. The drawing will take place Nov. 15. “Winners’ names will be published in the Rheinpfalz newspaper and on our website at www.quirnbach-pfalz. de,” Harth said. First prize is a cruise for two for one week. Second prize is a tablet PC. The horse show with different breeds will start at 10 a.m. In between the presentation of the horses, there will be show performances. “The Quirnbach horse market also features more than 110 vendors’ stands and booths with clothes, horse equipment, fruit, sweets, food specialties and a lot more are set up along the streets,” Harth said. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day in the fest tent. The Buchwaldmusikanten will perform brass music starting at 11 a.m., and the band Frontal will perform starting at 7 p.m. Quirnbach is located near GlanMü nchweiler on autobahn A62.

HAWC enhances Airmen readiness by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs At first sight, when walking into the Health and Wellness Center, you see countless displays. Things like: how too much sugar, fat and salt can affect your health as well as what happens to your lungs if you smoke. These displays aren’t just to make the HAWC look pretty. Although they do make for interesting decorations, they are visual aids for informational purposes. “Available to anyone with a common access card, we promote wellness and enhance force readiness by providing expert healthcare and prevention services to our military community,” said Lt. Col. Peggy Milam, HAWC flight commander. “We serve 47,000 beneficiaries in the K aiserslautern Military Community.” Along with the various health promotion displays, the HAWC offers many other nutrition, fitness and tobacco cessation classes and boasts two relaxation rooms. “In one of our relaxation rooms we have a massage chair as well as soothing music and a light box for those who need a little light during the winter months,” said Master Sgt. Darren Banks, HAWC NCO in charge. “We also have an aqua massage
machine.” With a range of 200 to 300 people per week frequenting the facility and all it has to offer, the HAWC staff must stay flexible, Milam said. The classes range from Running for Dummies to Heart Smart, which are held in a classroom that seats 35 people. “For the upcoming holiday season, we are offering our Battle the Bulge class to help those who want to avoid putting on unwanted pounds over the holidays,” said Banks. “We also have our Eat Right class, offered bi-monthly year round.” In addition to the variety of classes offered, the HAWC has several high tech devices to assist individuals with their nutrition and exercise goals. A Bod Pod which measures body fat percentage, a resting metabolic cart used to determine how many calories a person utilizes at rest and a running shoe station which evaluates a client’s feet and makes individualized shoe recommendations. “Having the wrong pair of running shoes is like bringing a baseball to play basketball,” said Banks. “It just doesn’t work well.” For 2013, the HAWC staff is working to build a lasting relationship with the physical therapy staff. “Many people go to physical therapy for an injury, get therapy then get released after their physical therapy goals have been met,” said Milam. “Following
this, they often resume their pre-injury activities too quickly and many times end up re-injuring themselves. We are working on building a bridge with the physical therapy clinic to prevent this. Clients will be referred to our exercise physiologists for post physical therapy conditioning assistance to promote a safe and healthy progression back to their ‘ normal’ exercise routine.” The HAWC has tobacco cessation options to include an interdisciplinary four-week class, online assistance or one-on-one counseling for anyone who would like to ‘ kick the habit.’ “We travel to different units and schools around the K MC to educate the community about the harmful effects of smoking,” said Banks. This ‘ one-stop-shop’ provides state of the art assistance in changing or enhancing lifestyles and guides clients toward a balance of physical, emotional, intellectual and social health, said Milam. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field. • 3-5 years experience in a supervisory role. Ability to effectively manage, lead, motivate, mentor, and develop employees and volunteers. • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills. • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, attention to detail, and organizational and time management skills. • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications as well as knowledge of various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. • Willingness and ability to regularly work non-standard hours (late evenings, holidays and weekends). • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to support active duty military and their families. • Public speaking experience is preferred. • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. • Must have USAREUR driver’s license. MSU, UConn to tipoff season tonight with historic first by Senior Airman Aaron-Forrest Wainwright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Michigan State Spartans and the University of Connecticut Huskies are set to tipoff in a matter of hours at the 2012 ESPN Armed Forces Classic basketball game tonight at Hangar 5 on Ramstein. The game is part of ESPN’s Veteran’s week initiative to honor the men and women who have served and are still serving in the U.S. military. This year America will see Ramstein’s Airmen at one of the Air Force’s premier strategic bases, while the teams play the first NCAA basketball game at an overseas location. “We are proud to host the inaugural Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Base,” said Brig. Gen. C.K. Hyde, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “This is the largest sporting event we’ve ever hosted; this is a great opportunity to showcase America’s Airmen and for our Airmen to be a part of an NCAA event.” This match-up is dividing squadrons; friendships are boiling into rivalries. The words on everyone’s lips are, “Who will win this game?” The game is a rematch of the 2009 Final Four match-up between these two powerhouses, where MSU came out on top during the semifinals in Detroit. The Spartans are coming into this season ranked 14 in the nation, while the Huskies are currently unranked. Both teams lost key players from last year, and are a bit younger. There will be some growing to do before they reach the caliber of old. While at Ramstein, the players toured the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and visited with service members. They also held an open practice to meet and greet fans and hosted a kid’s clinic for some of the children on base. This was a chance for the players and coaches to see what service members do in Europe and be a small part of history. “I’m really excited about the game because I love college basketball; any college basketball game is a good game,” said Senior Airman Kyle Bubb, 86th Munitions Squadron crewmember. “It makes me feel like I’m back home.” The game is being broadcast live at multiple locations around base including, Rooney’s Sports bar and J.R. Rockers. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch first-hand college basketball history, as these two NCAA college basketball teams go head to head. This is the first of several games being played at different military installations to commemorate Veterans Day.

Fan anticipation grows prior to Armed Forces Classic by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen and their families are eagerly awaiting the Armed Forces Classic basketball game tonight on Ramstein. The Michigan State Spartans take on the University of Connecticut Huskies in the opening game of the 2012 NCAA men’s basketball regular season. This is the first NCAA men’s basketball game to be played outside of the U.S. “This is truly an experience of a lifetime,” said Capt. Ryan Natalini, 86th Security Forces Squadron operations officer and a MSU alumnus. “I have followed the (Spartans) ever since I was in high school, have attended numerous home games, and have seen them play at the Final Four in Detroit and Indianapolis, so this is going to be a special treat.” The base has been buzzing with anticipation as they patiently wait to attend or watch the Spartans and Huskies battle it out in the season opener. “I am extremely excited to be able to have the Huskies here, it brings a little bit of home
to the KMC for me,” said Senior Airman Bob Roberts, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron electrical power production journeyman. “I remember going to games as a kid and I have been a fan since the Ray Allen days and as far back as I can remember.”
“I am looking forward to being able to actually watch a game, it is tough out here with work and the time differences to actually be able to follow my favorite sports teams,” Roberts said. “Also to see how the team does without former head coach Jim Calhoun, he will be greatly missed.”
Natalini will have the opportunity to be with the team throughout their stay here.
Natalini has been a fan of the Spartans throughout the years, the players have changed but he still has a current favorite.
“My commander, Lt. Col. Phil Holmes, knows I am a huge MSU basketball fan,” Natalini said. “When the opportunity arose, he sent my name forward as a volunteer to be with the team.” As an escort, the 2003 MSU graduate will fulfill an advisory role with the team. “I will be there to assist the team and coaching staff with anything possible,” the Michigan native said. “From helping them coordinate meals to liaising between them and the base leadership, I will be at their disposal. I am really hoping to see a lot of their practices and help explain some of the ‘military isms’ that they may not fully understand.” For Roberts, this game is simply an opportunity to watch his favorite team live for the first time in years.
“I have followed the team since the late ‘90s and am a huge fan,” he said. “It was wonderful to watch Draymond Green the past four years, but my favorite current player probably is Keith Appling.” Any Spartan fan knows long-time head coach for the Spartans, Tom Izzo, constantly brings fundamentally sound teams to the court, Natalini said. “The best part of the team is the coaching and philosophy of Tom Izzo,” he said. “He always has teams that are disciplined, efficient and physically tough. This is going to be a great season, and hopefully lead to a trip to Atlanta for another Final Four come March.”
