The main objective of the exercise was to evaluate the response procedures of students, bystanders, and emergency responders. “The purpose of the exercise was to ensure the ALS instructors and students were current in conducting their active shooter response procedures,” said Master Sgt. Jason Edwards. “This campaign is about understanding the program’s impact and how we as leaders can communicate with new Army Professionals the
importance of our help and generosity to a very wide range of organizations.” CFC, managed by the Office of Personnel Management, is the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity fundraiser with almost 200 CFC campaigns throughout the United States and overseas, raising millions of dollars each year. Pledges made by federal civilian, postal and military donors during the campaign support eligible non-profit organizations, providing health and human service benefits throughout the world. CFC-O kicked off its “Show Some
Love” campaign this month with an improved online donation system to foster transparency and guarantee contributions reach their intended organizations in a timely manner, said Sgt. 1st Class Land Gallagher, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Operations NCO and garrison CFC-O organizer. “The online pledge portal has been improved to allow donors to complete more than one pledge per account (for example – making a payroll deduction and then making a one-time pledge with a credit card), to pledge dollars and volunteer hours on the same pledge and
the expanded office/unit list, allowing donors to attribute their pledge to the correct reporting unit,” Gallagher said. “Additionally, the enhanced online charity search helps donors find organizations they might be interested in.” Celebrating its 57th year of giving, CFC relies heavily on federal employees’ generosity for contributions, Gallagher said. “Charities realized that federal workplaces were reliable places to campaign, but there were so many drives, camSee DONATION CAMPAIGN, Page 2

After exercise completion, the initial assessment of the school’s and security forces’ procedures was positive. “The response by the school was admirable, they locked down the building quickly,” said Master Sgt. Robert Jarvis, 86th AW/IG readiness planner. “The response by security forces was also impressive.” After the shooter fired his first shots, security forces responded to the scene and terminated the shooter within minutes. Officials say active shooter scenarios can happen anywhere. “We ensure the KMC’s preparedness by continually conducting exercises such as this,” said Jarivs. “Be it at a workplace, school, or other type of occupancy where masses of people assemble, we ensure our forces are ready to put an end to the threat with precision at a moment’s notice.”

from, and federal employees have the option to pledge both dollars and volunteer time. Donors also have the option to give anonymously. When making contributions, donors
can choose whether to release their name, contact information, pledge amount and volunteer hours to the charities they support. “I have multiple causes that I enjoy supporting, but I enjoy supporting anonymously,” Gallagher said. “I think that if we all take a deep look at our lives, we know someone that has been helped by an organization or charity. I would encourage all personnel that are new to CFC to open a Charity List Booklet and find an organization to connect with.” Throughout the campaign, CFC keyworkers will initiate 100-percent contact with garrison members to provide information regarding charities and donations. People can also
check out the CFC online pledge portal for a paperless way to make donations at www.cfcoverseas.org. “For 57 years, CFC has raised millions of dollars for eligible non-profit organizations all over the world, thanks to the heartfelt generosity of its donors,” Edwards said. “This year, global charities need your help more than ever to provide health and human services and improve the quality of life for those in need. RHCE defines MTF priorities of care by Regional Health Command Europe Public Affairs Regional Health Command Europe provides high quality health care for active duty service members and their families and ensures Soldiers are medically-ready to support their mission. Additionally, Army Military Treatment Facilities in Europe provide care to retirees, family members enrolled in TRICARE Select and non-TRICARE beneficiaries on a space-available basis. However, availability of these appointments varies widely across the region based on clinic staffing and support to operational units. Space-available care simply means that if an appointment is available and not already booked, then a retiree or civilian may be seen in that appointment slot. If all appointments are booked or are otherwise unavailable, then space-available patients must seek treatment in a host-nation facility. Priority is given to active duty family members to make it easier for active duty members to perform their military service without worrying about health care for their families. MTFs provide health care to beneficiaries according to the following basic priorities — as determined by DoD and TRICARE policy: • Priority 1: Active-duty service members • Priority 2: Active-duty family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime • Priority 3: Retirees, their family members and survivors who are enrolled in TRICARE Plus • Priority 4: Activeduty family members who are not enrolled in TRICARE Prime • Priority 5: All other TRICARE eligible persons • Priority 6: NonTRICARE eligible persons (e.g. general

schedule federal employees, AAFES and DODDS civilian employees) In an overseas assignment, DoD civilian employees and their family members may receive medical care in a military treatment facility, on a space-available basis. Available services are determined based on location of assignment. However, these facilities will treat only episodic (non-recurring) health issues for space-available patients. Examples of episodic health issues include: minor illnesses, muscle injuries and gastroenteritis. Chronic health problems — such as diabetes, hypertension and other major ailments — must be managed carefully by a primary care manager for continuity of care and patient safety. Since treatment on a space-available basis does not allow for continuous management of chronic health problems, Army MTFs in Europe will not treat chronic health problems for space-available patients. Patients who have
chronic health problems, but experience an episodic health issue, can be seen at an MTF on a space-available basis for treatment of
that specific episodic health issue. According to the Civilian Human Resources ActivityEurope website, “When a
civilian employee is selected for an overseas assignment they are notified that movement overseas may require them to initiate a change in their health benefits plan to ensure coverage, and that in the overseas areas, access for civilian employees and their families to military medical and dental facilities is on a space-available and reimbursable basis only.” If an appointment is not available at an MTF, local host nation providers can be utilized for medical care. The local TRICARE service center can provide a listing of local host-nation providers, but it is also recommended to check with your insurance company to ensure the visit will be reimbursed. KMC Post Office new website The new KMC Postal Operations SharePoint site is ready for CAC users (Active Duty/Contractor/Civilians) to use for Inprocessing, Mail Hold or Forwards, OutProcessing, and Volunteer Opportunities at the Ramstein (North/South) and Kapaun Post Offices. The site can be found through the USAFE SharePoint portal. Questions? Contact the Northside, Southside, or Kapaun Post Office Customer Service sections. Parking discs needed In certain parking lots on Ramstein Air Base, display of a parking disc is required. The maximum allowable time a car may remain in these lots is posted; the driver must set the disc to the arrival time and make it visible. The following are some parking lots where discs are required; MOMS, Ramstein Officers’ Club, the commissary, the library and the community center. Parking without displaying a disc or remaining past the allowed time could result in a citation. Visitor Control Center process and hours The Ramstein Visitor Control Center now issues passes with a scannable barcode. These passes are valid for one to three days and may be used at any KMC Air Force or KMC Army installation. Any request longer than three days will require customers to receive a long-term pass. Customers should understand with the process, waiting times may be longer than usual. The VCC opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., seven days a week. After hours, customers may still sign in guests at the west gate. The sponsor must be registered in IACS to sign in visitors. Furthermore, ID card holders who forget their ID may also be searched in IACS and be granted base access. Two women, their fight against breast cancer Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of this, two courageous women told their stories of pain and perseverance in their battle with breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Also, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Maria Moore, a military spouse, and Canadian Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Yvonne Keneford, NATO staff assistant, reflected on their initial diagnosis, treatment, and rebuilding their lives. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2016, and I had my surgery Jan. 4, 2017,” said Moore. “They detected it through a mammogram; It was a very tiny spot they weren’t too concerned about, but after a biopsy, I found out it was cancer.” Moore opted to have the breast cancer removed but kept both her breasts. “The breast cancer was farther along than they thought,” she said. “Had I not acted quickly, opted for the cancer removal and the reduction in lift, they would have had to remove the left breast.” Moore had radiation treatment, but did not require chemotherapy. Moore has been cancer free since early 2017. She will need breast reconstruction, but the cancer has not come back. “After an experience like this, you see things differently,” Moore said. “The

little things don’t bother you because you know life is too short to not enjoy it.” Moore had been getting regularly checked for breast cancer since the age of 40. She had no history of breast cancer in her family but was diagnosed at age 48. “My message to women is get the the mammogram,” she said. “Your insurance covers it. It’s uncomfortable, but the temporary discomfort is worth catching the cancer early. To women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, I would just say keep the faith, smile and laugh, and ask for help. Don’t try to do it on your own.” Keneford was diagnosed with breast cancer in February. She was at a gym in 2017 and hit her breast with a barbell, while benchpressing.
A few days later she felt a lump on her breast. She didn’t think anything of it, but after a while, it didn’t go away. “In February, I got a mammogram, found out it was cancer, and three weeks after the diagnosis I was in surgery,” said Keneford. Keneford said her father and sister had recently passed away from cancer, so one of the hardest things she has ever had to do was tell her family she had it. Because there was a high probability of the cancer returning, Keneford had both breasts removed as a precaution. “Both my breasts have been removed, I’ve been through chemotherapy, lost my hair, put on 50 pounds, and now I’m going through reconstruction therapy,” said Keneford. “But my feet are planted every morning, and I’m grateful for that.”
Doctors realized if they hadn’t caught the cancer early, it would have moved to her pectoral muscles, which would have made it a lot harder to treat, said Keneford. Most of Keneford’s family is still in Canada, but some of her family came to Germany to help her after the surgery and during chemotherapy. Tearing up, Keneford said, “This experience has made me extremely humble because I’m a very strong person and wanted to get through this process on my own, but I realized I would have to rely on people, even for the simplest task.” Though not finished with treatment yet, Keneford said she sees the light at the end of the tunnel. When asked if she had any words of wisdom for women, Keneford said: “My advice would be to take advantage of the mammograms. Women should be constantly checking their breasts, and if something is found, go get it checked out.” Early detection is the best prevention. Women from 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year, especially if there is a history of breast cancer in their family. Women 55 and over are recommended to get them every other year. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer survivorship has tripled over the past 60 years, and there are approximately 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. For more information on treatment, prevention and support groups for breast cancer, contact U.S. Air Force Maj. Air Force extends high year of tenure for E-4s through E-6s by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs
The Air Force is extending the high year of tenure for senior airmen through technical sergeants beginning Feb. 1, 2019. The memo, signed Oct. 18, extends the high year of tenure from eight to 10 years for senior airmen, from 15 to 20 years for staff sergeants and from 20 to 22 years for technical sergeants. Airmen in these ranks who reach their HYT prior to Feb. 1, 2019, or those who are currently approved for separation or retirement under the previous HYT limits, may submit a request to extend their HYT beginning Oct. 24 to the updated limit
if government funds have not been expended on their separation or retirement, such as moving expenses. “This is just one of the ways we are working to manage the talent we currently have,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. “Adjusting the high year of tenure policy will allow us to keep Airmen we’ve trained and developed over the course of their careers, and allow them to continue to serve their nation to the best of their ability and pay it forward, by training the next generation of Airmen who are right behind them.” The Air Force will use the flexibility to retain talented mid-tier Airmen to provide training, leadership and mentoring to the growing number of
accessions who are joining the force. “As we grow the force, we need to retain technically skilled experts across our ranks,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel, and services. “By extending high year of tenure, we’re able to leverage our talented, seasoned professionals to train, develop, and lead new Airmen to accomplish current and future mission requirements.” The Air Force will consider using career job reservations and noncommissioned officer retraining programs as needed to ensure that its growth is deliberately targeted to meet the needs of the National Defense Strategy. “These force-shaping tools are criti-
cal to ensuring the investment we’ve made in enhancing our Airmen’s technical skills are leveraged and allocated across the force deliberately,” said Kelly. Senior airmen through technical sergeants with an HYT of Feb 1, 2019, and later, will automatically have their HYT adjusted by AFPC in accordance with this policy. Those hitting HYT prior to Feb. 1 can request an extension via the virtual manpower and personnel flight. “Service in the Air Force is an honor, not a right or an entitlement,” Wright said. “Supervisors and commanders will continue to ensure that proper conduct and mission performance are the primary factors in determining continued service.”

86 CS Airman wins AF-level video contest by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Since he was a teenager, Senior Airman Lane McCall has been taking photos, shooting videos, and editing as a hobby. “It started in high school when I wanted to share my motocross edits with my friends,” McCall said. “All I had at the time was a cheap standard definition camcorder and a GoPro, but all I cared about was making content. I didn’t have high-quality footage, so I had to be more creative with my editing — which is what separated me from the pack. I was volunteering for every video project I possibly could, eventually leading onto film festivals and job opportunities. I carried a camera everywhere I went,” he added. Multimedia production quickly became McCall’s passion but finding high-paying jobs without a proper film school degree was difficult. As McCall began looking into schools, one thing became clear: film school was going to be very expensive. “I was looking for an alternative way to help pay for my school, and the Air Force looked like the best route to go,” he said. So he knocked on an Air Force recruiter’s door and expressed his desire to work in the public affairs career field. But the Air Force had other needs, and trained him as a communications Airman instead. He currently serves in the 86th Communications Squadron as a client systems technician. “I was a little disappointed I didn’t get the job I wanted,” McCall said. “But information technology and communications isn’t a bad gig. I’ve always shown interest in computers and technology. My career field is not only helpful for daily tasks, but it’s also extremely marketable outside of the Air Force — which is a cool perk.”

Despite serving in a field different from what he originally desired, he continued his passion for photography and filmmaking. He even maintains a YouTube channel where he uploads videos regularly. A few months ago, the Air Force announced a competition on the Air Force Portal. The task was simple: create a recruiting video less than 60 seconds that is intended to attract future Airmen. “Hesitantly, I decided to give it a shot,” McCall said. “I dedicated a weekend of scripting, filming, and editing to the project. With the help of my good friend, Staff Sgt. Greg Randle, we finished the project just days before the deadline.” McCall said it was difficult to determine where his video would stand, since many other Airmen would take a stab at the contest. The Air Force is vast with creative artists, and McCall figured there were other members out
there that would give his project a run for its money. Contrary to what he thought, the odds were in McCall’s favor. A few weeks after he submitted his video package, he received an email stating he was one of the top 10 finalists. “I thought to myself, ‘I have a chance of winning this and potentially opening up a door leading to a career behind a camera,’” McCall said. McCall’s leadership was extremely supportive of his project and were excited to send him on a temporary duty assignment to attend the Air Force Association Cyber Conference with high hopes of winning the award. “Once I got to the event, we were held in a room for all of us to chat about each other’s projects and the types of challenges we faced. All 10 of the finalists including myself received a coin from the Air Education and Training Command commander and command chief,” McCall said.
McCall remembered feeling a little bit tense while waiting to hear who won the contest. But the tension quickly gave way to relief when he was called back up to the stage to receive his award — he won the We Are Airmen: 2018 Recruiting Video Contest. McCall’s video was posted on the official U.S. Air Force Facebook page, helping it gain over 100,000 views across social media. “It’s difficult to put the emotions into words when I found out I won,” he said. “I felt like I accomplished something big — something meaningful for the upcoming generation of Airmen. This video will show people how capable and extensive this Air Force is.” McCall said he learned something that day. “Sometimes our abilities are overlooked, but there’s always an opportunity to display our talents,” he said. “Hopefully I can begin a new journey and put my skills to good use.”

Harrigian was important because he was able to further reinforce the critical role contracting professionals play in supporting USAFE operations in U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command,” said Wegner. “Assembling such a large group of contracting professionals across five different organizations doesn’t happen often, and I’m appreciative of the opportunity to receive senior leader insight and kudos.” Leadership representing the final three of five total organizations in attendance included Maj. Alfred Fryman, 764th Contracting Squadron commander, Maj. William Barrett, 52nd Contracting Squadron commander, and Maj. Philip Olson, USAFE-AFAFRICA/A4K deputy. The command is supported by over 350 contracting professionals, located throughout Europe and Africa, and is comprised of officers, enlisted, U.S. government civil service members, and host nation employees. Fiscal year 2018 concluded on Sept. 30, and Burton remarked how well contracting professionals performed during the end of year “crunch time.” “I’m proud of the way USAFE-
AFAFRICA contracting professionals performed during fiscal year 2018,” said Burton. “Strong relationships with our comptrollers, resource advisors, and mission partners resulted in a successful year where we fulfilled customer requirements, saved the U.S. Air Force dollars, and made our acquisition processes more efficient.” Wegner shared similar sentiments with Burton by highlighting why the fiscal year was particularly difficult and underlining how contracting professionals were able to, as Harrigian noted, “deliver on time in support of the mission.” “The mission-focused business leaders (contracting professionals) within USAFE-AFAFRICA are allin with a get-it-done attitude,” said Wegner. “Fiscal year 2018 was especially challenging, due to the numerous continuing resolutions and fluid distribution of project funding. Our U.S. Air Force contracting professionals worked tirelessly to support the success of our mission partners, while also balancing their fiduciary and legal responsibilities for expenditure of taxpayer funds. I could not be more proud of their attitude, their laser focus on mission accomplishment, and their steadfast professionalism in executing the acquisition
mission with integrity.” Contracting professionals are integral to the U.S. Air Force’s mission because it enables the ability to Fly, Fight and Win in Air, Space and Cyberspace. Many times, missions cannot be accomplished with the U.S. Air Force’s organic resources and contracts must be established to augment and enhance capabilities. On a local level, contracting professionals establish contracts for supplies, equipment, services, and construction to enable Professional Airlift for the 86th Airlift Wing and fulfill mission requirements for a host of other mission partners. While fiscal year 2018 has ended, fiscal year 2019 has just begun, and with that, a new set of challenges present themselves. Wegner shares his recommendations to ease the closeout stress for fiscal year 2019 for both customers and contracting professionals. “My one bit of advice for our customers in easing the closeout stress is early planning and communication with your contracting office,” he said. “Early planning for mission requirements and becoming educated on the acquisition process will allow for timely contract awards and reduce the anxiety we experience in September.”

Information, feedback, and answers to questions raised from a Child and Youth Programs Town Hall are available on a revamped 86fss.com website that aims to streamline communication. The Town Hall, held Oct. 10, encouraged community discussion about youth-related programs ranging from child care to youth sports offered on Ramstein Air Base and Vogelweh Military Complex. U.S. Air Force Col. John Zapata, 86th Mission Support Group commander, said the event’s purpose was to open a dialogue about successes, challenges, and potential solutions for the community. “We know how important the Child Care and Youth Program services are to our families and our entire community,” said Zapata. “It’s an essential service for all working parents and a vital part of our sense of community and quality of life. While we believe we have identified many of the concerns regarding the Child and Youth Program services, we want to continually hear from our parents on ways we can improve.” According to officials, Ramstein

ing licensing approval. Ramstein and Vogelweh Youth Programs also provide the largest youth recreation, sports, and instructional programs in the U.S. Air Force, with more than 7,000 annual participants. USAG RP launches new website for community by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz went live this week with an innovative, user-friendly new website and community members are invited to take the first look. The new website stems from the migration of all U.S. Army Installation Management Command garrisons to a combined content management system for their public-facing websites. The result is a unified public web presence for the IMCOM enterprise with standardization across installations as far as the look, feel and organization of the websites. With more than 70 IMCOM garrisons migrating to the new platform this fiscal year, USAG RP is the second website to launch within Europe and the 15th to come online worldwide. Some of the features of the new website include a localized newsfeed, a listing of garrison programs and services along with contact information and hours of
operation, AtHoc mass warning notification system registration, a link to road conditions, information and links for newcomers and much more. USAG RP Public Affairs Specialist and Webmaster Erinn Burgess said her goal was to make the website as userfriendly as possible to all members of the Rheinland-Pfalz military community. “Trying to find the right information in a place that often feels oversaturated with sources of information is hard. Our goal is to make it easier for community members and have this website be the automatic go-to for garrison information,” she explained. While developing the site, Burgess asked herself, “What would a newcomer be searching for on this site?” or “What kinds of services are family members looking for and how can I best organize them in a menu that makes sense and is easy to use?” “Honestly, it’s not a one-size-fits-all type of project,” she said. “Everybody has unique needs and different preferences of
how they would like their information presented. What I aimed to do is create something that caters to as much of our audience as possible, and as the website grows with time, we will continue to take feedback from the community on how to improve it for their use.” The site has several different options for searching for content. Garrison employees, who may be familiar with searching for programs based on which directorate they fall under, may access a list of programs and services through a menu of the different directorates. Community members who don’t work for the garrison can look for content by visiting user-specific menus such as the For Newcomers, For Soldiers and For Families menus, or they can visit the All Services menu and find an A to Z listing of garrison programs and services. If all else fails, the website features a search function for finding information quickly. Burgess said the new website is also much more inclusive of the Baumholder Military Community, whose programs
and services are listed within the menus as well. “USAG RP is one team made up of both Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities. It’s important that both communities are equally represented and I think this website has captured that,” she explained. The website also hosts an “Ask the Commander” feature, where site users can submit an email directly to USAG RP Commander Col. Jason Edwards. “I encourage everyone to get acquainted with our new site, whether you’re new to the community, you’ve been here a while, or you’re already a member of our team,” said Edwards. “Subject matter experts from throughout our organization have come together to create this product for you, and we want to know what you think. Check it out and let us know. Childhood dreams come true in Augsburg
Story and photos by Leonie Milde MilitaryinGermany.com There’s a children’s show called “Die Augsburger Puppenkiste” (Augsburg’s puppet box) featuring entire worlds that could fit inside a single wooden box. So when I was offered to tag along to Augsburg for a day, I jumped at the opportunity to meet my childhood heros in person. Little did I know, the city offers so much more. Pretty houses line the streets, water veins run through the entire city and traditional Bavarian Biergaerten (beer gardens) await on every corner. Eiscafé Tutti Fruity on Pfladergasse offers Nutella ice cream! You heard that correctly. It’s not just Nutella flavored like other amateur flavors but

comes with actual Nutella with every spoonful and, honestly, I’m mentally planning my next day trip as I type this. Die Augsburger Puppenkiste I’ll start with this spectacular museum, since it was the reason I went in the first place. For only €4.50 per adult and €3 per child, you can witness my childhood dreams come true in person (Tuesday through Sunday, that is). All original puppets and stages are exhibited, several mini theaters play their most famous movies and a kids’ corner invites little visitors to relax under a starlight ceiling. Even if you’ve never heard of them before, children of all ages will adore this interactive museum. Guided tours are available in English. Check their website to book an appointment.
Fuggerei Family Fugger built social houses in the heart of Augsburg almost 500 years ago, which were then destroyed during the second world war and rebuilt after. It remains social housing to this day but also functions as a museum now. You can take a look at model apartments, from the 20th and 21st century, learn about the family’s history and go underground inside a bunker providing information on life during the war. Even if history is not your thing, I suggest stopping by for the interesting architecture in this little village. Admission costs €4 per adult and €2 per child. Sightseeing Spectacular pieces of architecture spike the city. The Renaissance Rathaus (city hall) was built in 1615 and functions as the city’s landmark with pompous portals, coffered ceiling and mural paintings. A number of churches including the cathedral (Dom) are definitely worth a visit as well. Culinary Delights Weisswurst (white sausages), pretzels and traditional German delicacies can be found at Biergardens all over town. Try Waldgaststaette
Parkhaeusl, Zeughaus Stuben or Bayerisches Haus am Dom for that typical Bavarian ambience. If you’re looking for healthier options, you’ll love Mom’s Table, a vegan restaurant offering delicious salads, bowls, soups, sandwiches and desserts. Christmas Market Its annual Christkindlesmarkt originated as early as the 15th century and continues to charm guests from all over the country year after year. Their unique fairytale street features different puppet settings that will enchant visitors of all ages. Live music, a heavenly post office, a nativity scene and much more await as well between Nov. 26 and Christmas Eve.

Rogers, Ramstein dash away with Euros titles
Stories and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Dashiell Rogers won the boys’ cross country Europeans meet and fueled his Ramstein Royals squad to an overall Division I team title. Finishing up his senior season in high style, Rogers pushed hard early and blew past the competition late in the race with a Rolling Hills course-record 16:16.68 and eclipsed second place runner Mac Roberts of Black Forest by about 40 seconds. Ramstein had Denver Dalpais finishing in seventh place and four others high enough to forge a tight team win. “We had a very competitive team this year and
we pushed each other,” Rogers said. “And of course it all started with our coaches and the training they put us through. The coaches got us here in position to win the title.” Rogers said he wants to study computer science and might try to walk-on at a college once he decides where to enroll. He changed his routine for this final race by sticking near the front of the pack at the outset, compared to other times when he’d fall back for the early sequence of the 5K route. It paid off when he separated at the end and won by a few hundred meters over Roberts and the field of over 130 competitors. “I was surprised when they let him go,” said RHS coach
Allen Correa. “He had run here at Baumholder a week ago and his time was two seconds off the course record so he was confident coming in. They all had hard workouts leading up to Euros and Dash was running close to five-minute miles. The whole group just really had a phenomenal season.” Joseph Purvis of Kaiserslautern took fourth place to close a productive junior year campaign, making up time in the final 200 meters and almost catching Stuttgart’s Landon McMinimy for third. The girls’ Euro race was won by Abigail Michalec of St. John’s with a time of 19:00.58 and the top area runner was Ramstein’s Jordanne Hill. Her seventh-place fi nish helped Ramstein take third overall in the team standings. Jillian Donmoyer posted the top time for Kaiserslautern and Madison Brech was best for Baumholder. “I knew this was going to be like some serious competition … I knew about a few from schools we’ve seen, but with some I was running with them for the first time,” said Ramstein’s Hill, a
senior. “My goal was to make the top 10 and I did that.” Host Baumholder lined up numerous volunteers to help stage a successful event that was heavily attended by spectators as well as over 200 contestants from across the DODEA school spectrum. “It was a positive meet and we got a lot of help from many people here in the Baumholder community plus several others from Kaiserslautern, Ramstein, Stuttgart,” said BHS coach Todd Coyour.

It’s been great.” Kaiserslautern was just a point away from winning the girls’ team crown, grabbing third place behind Wiesbaden and SHAPE, which tied for first place. Taylor Larned and Victoria Lopez advanced to play in the girls’ doubles finals while singles KHS No. 1 Mark Butler joined Olaitan Powdar and William Alsing in scoring multiple wins on the boys’ side of the pool play tournament. All three girls earned first team All-Europe honors for their performance and Schmitz was awarded the Euros MVP award. Schmitz won seven matches at Europeans including a 7-5, 6-1 championship victory over Wiesbaden’s Charlotte Kordonowy. That match and the doubles championship berth by Larned/Lopez concluded perhaps the best girls’ tennis season in KHS history. The squad had a 7-1 overall record, losing only to Wiesbaden in the regular season. “This team is special, not just for their accomplishments on the courts, but their bond as a team,” said coach Elizabeth Quinn. “They are such a smart, grateful group of student-athletes that were

FOOTBALL Ramstein advances to Euro title game The Ramstein Royals are heading into this weekend’s DODEA Division I championship game with an undefeated record and a head of steam following a 48-14 semifinal playoff win over Kaiserslautern. Ramstein (7-0) will face Lakenheath (6-1) tomorrow night at Volgelweh in what will be the program’s third title game appearance under third-year coach Carter Hollenbeck. The Royals won the crown in 2016, lost to Stuttgart last year, and have
advanced again. Kaiserslautern had finals dreams of their own after gaining a berth in the DODEA semifinals, but had its work maximized by playing a Ramstein team it had already lost twice to in the regular season. “The first half was extremely tight and we had a touchdown pass play called back for a penalty, but it was exactly the right call by the officials for an illegal block in the back,” said Duke Allen, first year KHS coach. The Raiders were behind at one point 34-0 but responded with two touchdowns. The script played out similarly to how the first two meetings went, with Ramstein building big leads and holding the Raiders at bay in most all potential game-changing sequences. Title games for Division II and III will take place earlier in the day at the KHS

VOLLEYBALL Europeans championships tourney underway Ramstein and Stuttgart were the favorites in Division I as the Europeans Volleyball Championships opened. Both squads are undefeated and Stuttgart is the defending champion. The Europeans began Thursday and run through Saturday at various sites around the KMC. This past weekend, Ramstein capped a 12-0 season with match wins over Kaiserslautern and Black Forest Academy. Baumholder had a tougher time in its match with Spangdahlem, falling in straight games 25-14, 25-22, 25-14.

In 1952 Lachmann-Schaberick Specialties was established in Bremerhaven by Otto and Hilde Lachmann, where they started the production of embroidered ribbons, guidons, battalion flags, nametapes, and solid military items at the Air Base Weddewarden, Germany. In the late 60’s Otto and Hilde travelled to Heidelberg, Baden-Baden, Lahr, Sembach, Zweibrücken, and Idar Oberstein two weeks out of every month to sell their products. Handcrafted and hand-painted family and city coat of arms were produced and sold. They then decided to move the business from Bremerhaven to Mackenbach and Ramstein, where the production of engravings and awards started. In 1998 their daughter Brigitte Lachmann –Schaberick took over the business and enlarged the product range step by step. Their expertise now lies in the area of engraving, trophies, awards, plaques, framing, stamps, coins, patches, porcelain, gifts, souvenirs, and much more. “We are proud of our family business and very proud to serve the military for 66 years,” said Lachmann-Schaberick.
