Deployment Transition Center celebrates 25,000 milestone

U.S. Air Force staff members of the 86th Mission Support Group’s Deployment Transition Center and redeployers from the 406th Air Expeditionary Wing celebrate the 25,000th program participant since 2010 at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 22. The Air Force DTC was established in July 2010 to provide critical reintegration skills and decompression opportunities for redeployers, specifically working to mitigate resiliency impacts due to family separations and life challenges associated with deployments and demands associated with combat operations. The four-day program provides group discussions led by mission set managers and resiliency technicians as well as other reintegration techniques to aid redeployers as they transition from their deployed environments down range back into their lives back at their home stations. Photo by Tech. Sgt. Maeson L. Elleman

by Airman Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Deployment Transition Center recently celebrated helping more than 25,000 U.S. Air Force Airmen redeploy to their home stations. The DTC, created in 2010, focuses on bringing redeployers back into a non-deployed environment and readjusting them to life outside of contested areas. “The redeployers go through a four-day program that is meant to provide critical reintegration skills and decompression opportunities,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Christina Kyc, 86th Mission Support Group Detachment 1 DTC

program director. “They already have the reintegration skills. We are just bringing those skills back to the forefront of their mind and making them prominent again.” Other than the initial arrival, the staff stays in civilian clothes throughout the whole stay to make the experience as relaxing as possible. Kyc added they try to give back to Airmen after their contributions to demanding mission requirements over the course of their deployments. “When they come off the plane and we are taking their bags for them we want them to not think of it as in processing,” said Kyc. For many people who have deployed, small differences can

be jarring and hard to get used to again. The DTC helps transition redeployers by combining small things, such as driving their own car, shopping for groceries, and seeing grass, with public spaces to see how they will react, and help work through those feelings. The DTC team takes redeployers to tourist destinations around Germany to get them used to being around people and places again. These places include Hamburg, where they are given the freedom to explore, eat and enjoy the culture. “Everything in the DTC is programmed and intentional,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Ashley Graham, 86th MSG

Det. 1 DTC senior enlisted leader. “Whether they believe it or not, every part of the DTC helps them transition back into normal life. Even the water fountains are intentional in teaching the redeployers that water isn’t always readily available in water bottles.” The DTC team is composed of 26 deployed Airmen and three permanent-party Airmen from different career fields to support the redeployers one step at a time. Kyc said because the staff in the DTC are also deployed, they understand being away from their families for a long time and the importance of reintegration.

“The simple thing of hearing people being happy to see rain or take showers, you can’t [quantify how that affects people,]” said Graham. “25,000 people have been aided in some fashion, big or small, in their transition back home. That’s the whole goal of the program: give them the tools to make it a smoother transition.” The program provides critical integration and decompression opportunities to Airmen returning from a deployment. Graham said the DTC has no plans of slowing down when it comes to helping Airmen on their way home and giving them opportunities to reintegrate into society.

US Air Force trains with Army UC-35A aircraft

Story and photos by Airman Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron hosted a UC-35A Cessna Citation V aircraft training event with U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the General Support Aviation Battalion Oct. 18. The goal of the training was to expand the capabilities of the 86th AES by practicing aeromedical evacuation skills with the eight aircraft the Army has volunteered to use for moving patients within the European theater and the squadron’s area of responsibility. “I am reaching out to the Army because they are willing to help us see if we can use their aircraft for our mission,” said Staff Sgt. Austin Sukut, 86th AES technician flight examiner. “We have had a lot of patient movements within the last couple months, and so we are trying to expand our capabilities.” The 86th AES works with the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to complete its mission by providing transportation to a secure hospital for continued patient treatment, such as at LRMC or in the

U.S., when necessary. “The main countries we go to are Poland, Romania, and sometimes Morocco and we bring them back to LRMC,” said Sukut. “Last month we had about 40 patient movements. Sometimes we have three in one day, and other times we have one every other day.” The Army supporting the Air Force establishes a symbiotic relationship by building skills together, keeping the 86th AES flexible with new aircraft certifications to continue providing support for their patients. Whenever the aircraft the 86th AES use are down for routine maintenance, they can work with the Army to continue providing airlift medical evacuation support. “We want to continue to keep up to date on everything as far as the capabilities we provide,” said U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Zachary Altizer, Easy Company 1-214 GSAB pilot. “This is a new mission set we would adopt, this is not something our aviators have experienced a lot, so we are very excited to work with joint forces.” Joint force cooperation between sister military services is imperative to keeping U.S. forces ready to fly and combat effective.

U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Frans Vandiepeenhuisen, Easy Company 1-214 General Support Aviation Battalion chief of operations, talks about the capabilities of the UC-35A Cessna Citation V to U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 19.

U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Frans Vandiepeenhuisen, Easy Company 1-214 General Support Aviation Battalion chief of operations, right, talks about space for gear in the UC-35A Cessna Citation V to U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Charles Hayward, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron technician flight examiner, left, and Staff Sgt. Carlos Garcia, 86th AES flight instructor, middle, at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 19. The Army is supporting the Air Force with a relationship benefitting both services by building skills together, ultimately keeping the 86th AES flexible with new aircraft certifications to continue providing support for their patients. When aircraft used by the 86th AES are down for routine maintenance, they are able to work with the Army to continue providing airlift medical evacuation support.

Have you ever wished you could be in two places at once? The 725th Air Mobility Squadron, located at Naval Station Rota, Spain, is making it possible. Cyber and maintenance personnel assigned to the 725th AMS have collaborated with our industry partners to experiment with HoloLens, an augmented reality headset, as a tool to increase capability for deployed Air Mobility Teams and geographically separated units. The 725th AMS demonstrated the technology to 521st Air

Mobility Operations Wing leadership, the 725th’s parent wing, during Exercise Mobility Guardian 2023 on July 6. During the demonstration, an air ground equipment maintainer at NAVSTA Rota was able to interface with a communications Airman who was deployed to Australia with the 521st AMOW’s AMT supporting MG23 operations. “This is next level,” said Col. Dan Cooley, 521st AMOW commander. “This was the one of the most impressive innovations I have seen. These Airmen are on to something that has massive scope for the wing and far beyond. This technology allows us to keep our footprints small during Agile Combat Employment operations while ensuring we have the right

people on the job at a moment’s notice.” The two members, nearly 9,000 miles apart, executed a mock equipment inspection to showcase the idea and development to Cooley, Chief Master Sgt. Jeremiah Grisham, 521st AMOW command chief, and a room of observers. “With the HoloLens, we’re able to leverage the expertise of one individual with the talent and hands of another at a distance of thousands of miles,” said Grisham. “The quality is so clear you can even read a manual.” As a part of the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center’s enterprisewide Next Generation AMOW, or “NextGen AMOW,” initiative, the wing is organizing, training, and Staff Sgt. Daniel Wymer, a prior 725th Air Mobility Squadron cyber systems operations supervisor, showcases HoloLens augmented reality headset capabilities during Exercise Mobility Guardian 2023, Naval Station Rota, Spain, July 9. Using HoloLens technology, one individual can don the goggles and controllers from one location, and another individual in another location can clearly look around the setting as if they were there themselves to provide guidance and training.

equipping these small AMTs consisting of aerial port, maintenance, and command and control functions to deploy to locations in areas beyond established nodes. “This relatively inexpensive resource allows for collaborative audio and visual communication with augmented reality features that can connect home station subject-matter-experts with frontline Airmen to provide real-time assistance, which can exponentially expand the technical capabilities of a single Airman beyond their primary Air Force Specialty Code,” said Senior Master Sgt. Anthony Sewejkis, 725th AMS maintenance superintendent. AMTs may deploy alongside contingency response forces to provide base operating support or to a location with the necessary infrastructure in place to support mobility operations. Though an AMT is a highly capable force package, their footprint is intentionally small in order to be easily maneuverable and leave minimal impact to home-station operations. How mindful meditation will help you stay healthy in cold

by Steve Bronson contributing writer to MilitaryinGermany.com Winter is here! Worried that the cold might get you and your family sick more often? One thing that definitely makes us sick more often is our body’s response to stress and anxiety. Obviously, having to deal with the holidays can make us stressed out. This stress directly impacts your body and your general health. The better that we are equipped to deal with stress-induced anxiety, the better off our health will be. One great way to deal with stress is the process of mindful meditation. Mindful meditation, instead of other forms of meditation that focuses your attention outward, commands us to pay attention to the present. It commands us to be aware of what’s going on inside our bodies and our minds. The goal is to simply acknowledge the reality inside ourselves, instead of constantly focusing on how to change our situation. Once you move from the tendency to want to change things to the point of accepting your true and ultimate reality, you get closer to the goals of mindful meditation. This gives us the opportunity to see and appreciate ourselves for who we really are. Mindfulness simply provides nonjudgmental attention to the details of our experience as it unfolds. So how do you practice mindful meditation? Here are a few steps to get you started. Background photo by Captain Wang/Shutterstock.com

November 3, 2023

1.

Pick your location. Scene and setting are very important for getting the appropriate mood for mindful meditation. We recommend finding a quiet room with a candle lit and a cushion to sit on.

2.

Sit in a posture that is upright but not rigid. Cross your legs in a comfortable position in front of you.

3. 4. 5.

Sit there and pay attention to your breath as it comes in and out of you. Focus on keeping your breathing as steady as possible. Pay attention to your thoughts (and they will come!). Instead of focusing on any particular thought, let the thought enter and leave your consciousness naturally. Finally, remind yourself that you need to be inwardly compassionate. You are trying the best that you can, and being hard on yourself will get you nowhere, and will lead to anxiety. Start by doing this for fifteen minutes at a time, and then see if you can go longer. After getting some practice, this meditation should help you reduce anxiety and stress in your life, which will also help you feel more healthy. Two great apps that can help you get into mediation are Headspace and Calm, which offer guided meditations with different topics such as health, gratitude, productivity and more. They both offer free trial periods! There is a common misconception that meditation is the absence of thoughts when really it is more about the recognition of thoughts and the ability to put them aside for the few moments of calm you’re going for. While it does take practice, there is no such thing as ‘can’t do it’ or a wrong time to start. You’ll find it gets easier with each practice and even on days you have trouble focusing, the mantras that will be read on the apps mentioned above will provide food for thought no matter the mood you’re in. Try it now! Author’s Profile: Steve Bronson in association with Doctors Imaging. They’re radiologists concerned about quality patient care and the physical fitness of our nation’s veterans. Logisticians make “Hooah!” happen for DEFENDER 24

by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Logisticians and planners from U.S. Army Europe-Africa, 21st Theater Sustainment Command and selected U.S. Army units based in the continental United States gathered for a Logistics and Movement Conference at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, Oct. 16-20. Participants finalized movement requirements for DEFENDER 24, an annual U.S. European Command-directed multi-national, joint exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between U.S. and NATO Allies and partners. “For Soldiers to fight and win on the battlefield, they need weapons to fire, tanks to drive, food to eat and logistics support to ensure those necessities get to the right place at the right time,” said conference organizer and 21st TSC exercise planner Capt. Ira White.

Logistics considerations influence the planning and execution of operations at all levels of warfare, according to the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence. Ray Montanez, USAREUR-AF lead sustainment planner, knows how to exert that influence in Europe. He has been a part of DEFENDER exercise planning since 2018. “Doing logistics in Europe is a little bit complicated because of all the rules and regulations we have to comply with in different countries,” said Montanez. He cited multiple factors that must be considered, including different country requirements and approval timelines for crossing borders, diplomatic clearances, disinfection protocols to protect against African swine fever and host nation capabilities. According to Montanez, joint training with allies helps streamline those processes and improve host nation capabilities. Familiarizing

U.S. Army Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command listen to the final briefings as a part of the weeklong DEFENDER 24 Logistics Movement Conference on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, Oct. 20. The conference was held for various stakeholders from across the military to coordinate and create a shared understanding during the planning stages for DEFENDER 24.

allies with U.S. operations, and vice versa, enhances interoperability. “Sometimes they [allied and host nations] do operations completely different from what we do,” said Montanez. “But when we come over and they see how we operate, they try to emulate that. And we always have someone there to provide the guidance, the SME [subject matter expert] for that area.” For CONUS-based units, participating in the Logistics and Movement Conference ensures they get maximum training benefit from their time in Europe. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dustin Trimmer, of the 244th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade out of Fort Knox, Kentucky, said that after coordinating with 21st TSC and the relevant host nation, they determined they should use a different airfield than originally planned. “We’ve already identified a new staging point, which actually is strategically easier for us in terms of getting the aircraft fully prepped for when the mission kicks off,” said Trimmer. “And it also provided a closer location for our main body to come in and only have an hour trip to the actual training area.” Trimmer said he looks forward to working with allied and partner militaries and demonstrating how his brigade supports the warfighter. “From the 244th perspective, we’re hoping to show our capabilities, where we have multiple airframes...moving equipment from one location to another faster than it would be by ground,” said Trimmer. “We also bring in aeromedical units that are fully capable to provide real life, life-

saving support, if needed during the mission.” Trimmer said the conference allowed him to finalize equipment needs and hammer out how the 244th ECAB will get food and water during DEFENDER 24. Figuring out how to feed the force is Chief Warrant Officer 3 Norberto Salas’ primary objective. As 21st TSC Senior Food Advisor, Support Operations, Salas supports food service assistance across the European theater. For DEFENDER exercises, his team coordinates with allied and partner nations and exercise planners to make sure the U.S. maximizes host nation capabilities. “In addition, we augment anywhere that we identify the shortfall to help achieve the commander’s intent,” said Salas. Salas, who has been a Class I planner for the past two DEFENDER exercises, said working with host nations offers opportunities to establish relationships and identify capabilities outside of the U.S. military that can help meet the mission. He said the conference was an invaluable opportunity for multiple entities to work in-person to review and validate systems, processes, locations and needs. “The benefit of everyone coming together for this one week is to help refine our requirements, track what the units are tracking…how they see their support…so that we can make sure that we capture those requirements, and it meets what they’re tracking and what we’re capable of doing.” According to White, in addition to finalizing all logistical and movement requirements for units participating in DEFENDER 24, a major conference objective was to

build a cohesive sustainment team for the exercise. Capt. Michael Lee, V Corps operations officer, said working directly with coordinating units at the conference alleviated the “stonewall effect” of working solely via computer. “For us, this is a time where we can communicate with the customer units face to face, which is a better way to do business,” he said. “It gives us a way into their operations plan and what they are going to be doing at the training areas. What we want to focus on is how the units will go from CONUS to OCONUS, and be able to integrate into the theater properly, safely, and get the best training they can receive at that location.” Lee said he appreciated the opportunity to collectively examine friction points and problemsolve as sustainers. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command is U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s lead organization for all sustainment activities including logistics support, transportation, combat sustainment, human resources, finance, contracting and all other areas in the field of sustainment. The command also serves as the responsible headquarters for USAREURAF’s military police, medical and sustainment brigades, providing combat engineers, military police and medical professionals during partnership training and other operations in support of not only USAREUR-AF, but also NATO, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Central Command. The event served as a significant milestone for Scouts, as they pursued the achievement of their First-Class rank.

Event organizer and Troop 1920 Scoutmaster Brian Raymond emphasized that this event represents one of the essential 13 steps that Scouts must complete to earn their First-Class rank. Furman actively engaged with the Scouts, sharing the personal motivations that drive his dedicated service. “I’ve been a Soldier for the past 23 years, and that’s all I ever wanted to do growing up. When I was little, I would play GI-Joe, and as soon as I was old enough, I joined the Army. I love it — I love the people; I love being on a team.”

The event attracted Scouts from various troops, including Troop 1920 Vogelweh, Troop 69 Vogelweh, Troop 12 Ramstein, Pack 69 Vogelweh, and Pack 232 Ramstein. In total, the gathering included 40 young Scouts, aged between 10 and 17. Furman also shared with the Scouts his recent participation in a naturalization ceremony, during which new citizens take an oath to support and defend the constitution. Inquisitively, he asked the Scouts if anyone knew the rights of a citizen, and they responded with answers such as “the right to

bear arms” and “freedom of speech.” Furman expressed his privilege in engaging with the local Scouting community, emphasizing the significance of young minds understanding constitutional rights and obligations. “These Scouts are our future leaders, and I’m encouraged by their curiosity and commitment to serving their community,” he added. Scholz emphasized the importance of the cooperative structures between the Bundeswehr, partner militaries, and other civilian forces. During his closing remarks, Scholz said that the women and men participating in the demonstration were “taking part with their heart,” which he said was the most important aspect of the event. “Thank you for participating,” said Scholz. “Thank you for all that you do for our common security.”

Driving in Germany Story and graphic by German American Community Office This week we’ll discuss the importance of appropriate winter tires. It is starting to get cold and wet, and Germany has experienced snowfall in late November in the past. Get a head start and be prepared for inclement weather. Driving in Winter: Appropriate tires: It is important to make sure your vehicle is prepared for winter conditions. Article 2 of the German traffic regulations requires the use of suitable tires when road conditions are icy. Appropriate winter and all-season tires will have a marking indicating that they are rated as appropriate for driving in snowy and/or icy conditions. The marking is a snowflake (indicating tires

suitable for snow). If you are found driving in winter conditions without the appropriate tires, you could be fined €60 and given a point against your license. If you impede traffic, the fine could be €80 and a point against your license. In case you endanger someone, the penalty could be €100 and a point against your license. If you cause an accident with the wrong tires, you could pay €120 and receive a point against your license. In addition to that, if you are involved in an accident and your vehicle is equipped with the wrong tires, your car insurance may hold you

completely or partially liable for the damage. Driving in other European countries: In general, it is highly recommended to familiarize yourself with the traffic rules of the country you intend to visit. This applies even more for the winter season. ABC IN KMC: Romani in Treviris by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Aerial view of Trier, with St. Peter cathedral on the left and Constantinus basilica on the right.

It’s a well-known fact that Trier is Germany’s oldest city, developed by the Romans on a Celtic settlement founded 3,000 years ago. During the Roman era it was a flourishing city and structures such as the Porta Nigra, the ruins of the emperor bath and an amphitheater can be visited today. But, did you know that Trier has a direct link to the city of Istanbul 1,500 miles further east? After decades of civil war, Roman emperor Augustus promoted the infrastructure of his newly conquered provinces, including the area along the Moselle River. Augustus named the former Celtic settlement “Augusta Treverorum” and began constructing the capital city of the Western Roman Empire. The city quickly became a trading hub and an attractive residential area with a climate fit for cultivating wine. He had a wooden bridge built in the year 17

B.C. and the dark stone foundations of the bridge can still be seen today, known as the Römerbrücke (Roman bridge), Germany’s oldest bridge. After a series of emperors, Flavius Valerius Constantinus was born about 277 A.D. in Niš (now in Serbia), as the son of Helena. He came to be known as “Constantine the Great” and was emperor of the combined Roman Empire from 306 to 337. A large and prestigious throne hall was built in his honor around 310 A.D. with mosaic flooring and a wall and floor heating system. The structure is 67 m (220 ft) long, 27.5 m (90

ft) wide and 33 m (108 ft) high, without any supporting pillars in state-of-the-art technology of the time. It is said that the hall was hardly used, eventually the roof collapsed, was restored and used as part of a palace, then developed into an enclosed housing area for decades, to finally be given to the Protestant church in 1856. Trier’s mighty cathedral was built on the remains of a Roman palace, the Porta Nigra was the northern gate, today’s pedestrian zone was aligned with covered walkways and the city was built in a typical chessboard layout. existed where the train station is today and the main connection road in east-west direction called Via Maximus led to the Roman bridge for river transport and can still be clearly made out from Petrisberg with a grand view over the city. “Bread and Games” took place in the amphitheater and women enjoyed steaming baths and massages at the thermal Barbara Baths. Treviris was a bustling commercial hub along Via Agrippa which connected Lyon and Metz to Cologne via Mainz (Mogontiacum). At the height of its power, the city was the largest Roman settlement north of the

Alps with 75,000 inhabitants. Constantine the Great resided in “Treviris” from 306 to 316 A.D., left a gigantic footprint (in front of Porta Nigra) then traveled eastwards via Rome and eventually conquered Byzantium at the Bosporus Strait to strengthen the eastern part of the empire. He declared the city as the Eastern capital and renamed it Constantinople. It is noted that Constantine was rather liberal towards the new Christian religion and may have converted to Christianity. In any case, shortly before his death there in 337 A.D., he laid the foundation of the “Hagia Sophia” as a church, formerly used as a museum and now a mosque in modern Istanbul. By the way, Istanbul is the Turkish word for “Constantinople,” slang “Stambul,” that changed its name under Atatürk in 1930, when it lost its status as capital and switched from Arabic to Roman writing. The city of Trier is now offering a virtual reality tour to step into the lives and bustling times of the Romans.

Cochem Imperial Castle (Reichsburg Cochem)

COCHEM from Page 1 Cochem: Three cool things 1. Visit the Altstadt. Cochem’s old city ranks right up there in terms of archetypal German altstadts. We’re talking shops, markets, weinprobes and hearty restaurants. There are medieval towers, battlements, and city walls. And, of course, every visitor will love the half-timbered buildings nestled shoulder to shoulder along a narrow strip of river bank. You’ll find brightlycolored buildings, flower boxes, and just the right amount of architectural asymmetry. Wander. Stop for a drink if you like. But just enjoy it. 2. Go deep into The Bundesbank Bunker. Given the zeitgeist, this is almost a must-see. Built during the Cold War era to host a massive stash of cash in case of a nuclear war, and hidden in plain sight, this is basically an awesome secret hideout open to visitors. Located thirty meters beneath the surface, the bunker is both cold (bring a jacket) and cool. 3. Get wet and wild at the Moselbad. Cochem has an excellent swimming complex with a sprawling outdoor pool area on the banks of the river. This is the perfect place to visit any time of year. If the day shapes up as hot, make a reservation and bring your swimsuits. If you’re there during the colder months, then the indoor portion — with its crazy slides of all shapes and sizes — is a blast for the whole family. The one thing you have to see: Cochem Castle Though Germany is the land of many

Cochem Castle main gate

castles, you have to see Reichsburg Cochem. It is one of Germany’s most beautiful and iconic castles, and the walk up to it through the Altstadt is worth the trip alone. The Reichsburg is also cool for a reason you might not expect. After having been reduced to ruins by 17th-century French soldiers, the castle was renovated in the

19th century after being purchased on the cheap by a Berlin businessman who was descended from French refugees. The renovation is actually what makes this castle so amazing: you can experience the full glory of a non-ruined German river castle. Guided tours are available daily in English. The castle also has a great restaurant that is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Getting there By car, Cochem is about two hours north of Kaiserslautern, approximately ninety minutes west of Wiesbaden, and just three and a half hours northwest of Stuttgart. Cochem is also accessible by train.
