521st AMOW hosts Squadron Leadership Orientation Course Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Col. Bradley Spears, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing vice commander, spoke to current and upcoming leadership within the 521st AMOW during the Squadron Leadership Orientation Course on Ramstein Air Base, April 20. The course focused on 521st AMOW’s strategic priorities of developing Airmen and enhancing partnerships.

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing hosted their second annual Squadron Leadership Orientation Course for incoming wing, group and squadron commanders, directors of operation, and superintendents at Ramstein Air Base, April 15-20. The course focused on the 521st AMOW’s strategic priorities of developing Airmen and enhancing partnerships through the execution of Rapid Global Mobility. In total, 24 current and future leaders of 15 units from 12 countries spanning over 5,100 miles attended 57 events and briefings throughout the week, where they explored a variety

of topics including but not limited to: maintaining a healthy enlisted force, developing host nation relations, and legal operations at the unit level. Even though the leaders attending the event have not taken on their new positions within the 521st AMOW yet, this event will provide them the knowledge to transition seamlessly while providing them with space to think critically prior to assuming their future roles. “This event has been very successful because we were able to bring together incoming commanders, directors of operation, and superintendents to orient them with the various tools and personnel available as they become familiar with their new leadership role See ORIENTATION, Page 2

Steven Roberts, 728th Air Mobility Squadron superintendent agrees with Thomsen’s sentiment about the SLOC. With 20 years of experience between two AMOW’s, Roberts was able to provide a unique perspective to the other attendees. “I believe SLOC met and exceeded its goal of networking, team building, and educating the new commanders and duty officers for future operational success of the AMOW,” said Roberts. “As the key leaders throughout the military airlift system, we provide rapid global mobility worldwide to DOD customers. People count on us to get their cargo and passengers anywhere in the world.” The cool thing about the airlift system is we all receive and provide customer service from each other. Therefore, these relationships are even more paramount and it helps to know the person on the other end of the phone. Whether it’s coordinating a maintenance recovery team for a broken aircraft, critical cargo, or emergency leave passenger, we get it done. Our Airmen executing the mis-

Ramstein newcomers compete in Amazing Base

A participant of the Amazing Base bikes to each station April 24 on Ramstein Air Base. Participants were able to run or bike the race to incorporate fitness with fun.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members new to Ramstein showed up ready to compete at the base’s first ever Amazing Base event on Ramstein Air Base, April 24. The goal of Amazing Base was to welcome incoming spouses, government employees and civilians to the 86th Airlift Wing. The event introduced participants to on-base facilities, services and resources in a competitive and active way. Teams of five ran and biked to various stations across Ramstein in an attempt to familiarize themselves with the base while competing in activities, winning prizes, and integrating into the community. The Amazing Base brought unfamiliar faces together to encourage members to meet new people, and to advocate for people to get out and know that they are always welcome to events and activities on Ramstein. “I think as adults, we wait to be invited, and you don’t have to,” said Kristin Moore, spouse of Brig. Gen. Richard Moore, 86th Airlift Wing commander and event coordinator. “Consider yourselves invited to anything Ramstein

offers and come out and have a good time.” The race kicked off Tuesday morning with a healthy breakfast, and led right into the festivities. Each team headed out to give their all in competitions such as a mini golf challenge, bowling, drunk goggle corn hole and an event where participants had to eat marmite. To promote resiliency, Amazing Base also included stations such as the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Mental Health, and the Red Cross so that the newcomers knew where to go if they ever needed support during their time on station. The challenges required team cohesion and motivation, and even though the activities were difficult, that didn’t stop the spouses from showing up to show out. With 17 teams total and over 50 participants, the team Real Housewives of Ramstein came in first place, running the entire race in 1 hour and 13 minutes. “The best thing about the event was watching the spouses become extremely competitive about this, they just took off like crazy,” said Chris Lowry, U.S. Air Forces Europe Community Support Coordinator.

Airmen memorialize fallen heroes during annual 24-hour Run Challenge by Annabelle Arcand U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria

GRAFENWOEHR, GERMANY  Tactical Air Control Party Airmen from across Europe ran to memorialize fallen Airmen and Soldiers here, April 26 to 27, during the 7th Annual TACP 24-hour Run Challenge. “My goal is 60 miles. Last year I got 52 and I am trying to beat that,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jason Hammel, who set the bar high for this year’s challenge. The run started April 26 at 1 p.m. and continued through the night, ending April 27 at 1 p.m. The 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron, stationed in Vilseck, received broad support from the U.S. Army’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment and 173rd Airborne Brigade, and TACP’s 2nd Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron out of Poland. The 4th Air Support Operations Group Detachment 1 from Ramstein also participated. Everyone was encouraged to participate, and bicycles and tricycles were available for kids. The Air Force Infantry, as the TACP teams are jokingly called, get their nickname from their primary task of providing air support to their assigned Army unit. assigned to Army bases. The 24-hour Run Challenge is a worldwide event consisting of TACP teams participating globally at the same time. The Tactical Air Control Party is a relatively small community, consisting of roughly 2,500 members of the United States Air Force. Therefore, the event is very personal to many participants. Nine members have fallen since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom. “Every year, our whole tactical community participates. There are members

in the states, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait that are doing the same thing,” said Hammel. “We ran 24 hours, building our comradery within our community and memorializing our fallen brothers.” The 24-hour Run Challenge will return next spring. “March and April is usually the time frame when most Soldiers fall in combat and the time they will be remembered most,” said Maj. Daniel Dlugiewicz, 4th Air Support Operations Group. “The event is a

good cause driven by pride and dignity.” Aside from building camaraderie and remembering the fallen, TACP uses the event as a fundraiser. The TACP association provides support and financial assistance to fallen and injured members and their families. This year’s 24-hour Run Challenge fundraiser has raised $107,500 so far and is aiming to raise a total of $150,000. Donations are accepted until May 1. Landstuhl hospital Color Guard honors “Wereth 11” Soldiers massacred in WWII by Stacy Sanning Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Office Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Color Guard participated in a ceremony April 28 in Wereth, Belgium honoring 11 Soldiers who were massacred during the early stages of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. The “Wereth 11” were attached to the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, an all-black unit, and got separated from their unit during the battle, walking more than 10 miles trying to evade German patrols. Wereth farmer Mathias Langer took them in to give them food, coffee and rest. The German SS arrived at the farmhouse, force marched the Soldiers away, tortured and executed the men Dec. 17, 1944. Years later, Hermann Langer, son of Mathias, erected a cross to honor the Soldiers as well as the kindness of his father. This monument is believed to be the only one in Europe dedicated to

That small memorial has grown to an annual ceremony, attended this year by hundreds of Americans, Belgians and other Europeans as well as Carla Benini, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission for the U.S. Embassy in Belgium. Q&A: Meet Ramstein’s AF Reserve Recruiters Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Tory Patterson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Q: A:

To begin, can you tell us a little about yourselves?

Sure, I’m Senior Master Sgt. Julie Boekers, and I work with Master Sgt. Gabriel Silva. We are the Air Force Reserve Recruiting Team on Ramstein Air Base.

Q: A:

And who do you serve, specifically?

So, the Air Force Reserve offers currently serving, ActiveDuty Airmen (enlisted and officer) the opportunity to transfer into the Reserve via two programs – Palace Front and Palace Chase. The programs are frequently misunderstood, so that’s where we can help.

Q: A:

So what does it mean to “Palace Chase”?

The Palace Chase program is an “early release” program. What this means is Active-

Duty members can request to transition from Active-Duty into the Air Force Reserve. The application process, which is handled by Headquarters Air Force Personnel Center, takes Master Sgt. Gabriel Silva, a p p r o x i m a t e l y Air Force Reserve recruit- 7-8 weeks. Like er, can assist Active-Duty any other Air Airmen with transfer- Force program, ring into the Air Force there are eligibilReserve. The Palace ity rules and facChase and Palace Front tors. Interested programs are frequently Airmen can misunderstood, but the review their eliReserve recruiting team gibility by checkon Ramstein Air Base ing out Table 1.1 can assist. of AFI 36-3205. Being stationed overseas, one important thing to know is you’ll need to submit your application 9 months prior to your Date Eligible for Return from Overseas for an early release equal to DEROS.

Q: A:

So that covers Palace Chase, what about Palace Front?

The Palace Front program differs from the Palace Chase program in that it’s not “early-release.” Palace Front allows Active-Duty commissioned and enlisted Airmen to transfer to the Air Force Reserve the day after they separate, normally upon completing their service commitment.

Q:

So, to summarize, if an Airman is interested in making the transition to the Air Force Reserve, what should they do?

A:

Airmen interested in the Palace Chase program, again that’s the early-release opportunity, should check their eligibility through the AFI we mentioned before (AFI 36-3205, Table 1.1). But more than anything, they should reach out to us, their local Air Force Reserve In-Service Recruiters. That is what we are here for! There are also other Air Force Reserve Recruiters in Europe (Spangdahlem, Mildenhall, Lakenheath, and Aviano), and we can help connect you with them if necessary.

Q: A:

Are there any other opportunities you can tell us about?

The Air Force Reserve needs recruiters! That’s what I am, and I can tell you it has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding assignments I’ve ever experienced. I joined the recruiting team in 2006, and have been a part ever since. It is, without a doubt, one of the best kept secrets of the Air Force Reserve. Enlisted members, Senior Airman through Senior Master Sgt., are eligible to apply, and I’m the primary POC for that process. Senior Master Sgt. Julie Boekers has been an Air Force Reserve Recruiter since 2006. She said being a recruiter is an enormous responsibility, but one of the most rewarding assignments of her career.

Active-Duty Airmen, enlisted and officer, seeking information about the Air Force Reserve can contact the Ramstein In-Service Recruiting Team at 480-3940.

Unit-Europe, will hone their physical fitness, warrior skills and Army knowledge training before traveling to Bragg, home of USARC. Other competitors included: Sgt. Helena NievesRodriquez, 773rd Civil Support Team, Kaiserslautern; Staff Sgt. William Thompson, 457th Civil Affairs Battalion, Grafenwoehr; Sgt. William Haynes, 773rd Civil Support Team, Kaiserslautern; Corporal Jonathan Boyden, 773rd Civil Support Team, Kaiserslautern; and Spc. Jonathan Diaz, Medical Support Unit-Europe, Kaiserslautern. At the Soldier level, Klein led in the road march, M4 carbine qualification, weapons hands-on and other key events to gain a 10-point cumulative score advantage over Diaz. Diaz aced the land navigation in less than an hour and had the second highest APFT score. Klein admitted to being somewhat pessimistic about his chances at competition start, and he had reasons. Perhaps because he happened to be on temporary duty in Kaiserslautern; he was selected as a last-minute substitution just three days before event kickoff. Some of his required gear was still back at his Wiesbaden home. “But it turned out very well,” he said. “Even if you don’t win, there’s a lot you can learn from this and become a better Soldier all the way around.” At the non-commmissioned officer level, the margin of victory was tight. Sgt. Pattisue Graham, MSUE, fought hard to edge out Sgt. NievesRodriguez by just one point on the cumulative scale. Graham had strong performances in the medic lane, radio operations, weapons hands-on, and writing events, while

NievesRodriguez was outstanding in physical tasks. Graham, who recently participated in a standards competition for the Expert Field Medical Badge, shared Klein’s attitude about BWC’s learning experience. “I think my biggest challenge was the ruck march with the improved outer tactical vest,” said Graham via email after the competition. That road, or ruck, march is a trainas-you-fight event, which means, of course, the donning of the tactical vest she mentioned and with heavy armor plates. That IOTV combined with a 35-pound ruck sack, and water, meant that Graham carried half her body weight. The load set her back, and she finished several minutes behind the rest of the field. ‘I quickly realized how much upper body strength I lacked when the weight was distributed solely on my shoulders,” she said. However, she toughed through to complete the march, and the pain she felt during the event helped target her training goals for the big show at USARC level. “I plan on changing my workout to emphasize strength training while maintaining cardio and endurance training,” she said. Each competitor came to find the skills at which they were good and those at which they need further training. NievesRodriguez, for instance, is an avid Cross-fitter and excelled in the physical events, scoring 300 points on the Army Physical Fitness Test, and completed the road march in less than 90 minutes. Mystery events were assembly and operation of the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System which was a sub event inserted into

the medical lane, and the hands-on weapons event which required rapid disassembly, assembly and functions checks of the M4 carbine and M9 pistol. But there were surprises beyond this too. “Five boars ran right past me,” said Boyden, a chemical biological radiological nuclear NCO with the 773rd, of the land navigation event. “I think they were, like, teenagers, and they didn’t pay any attention to me,” he said. Boyden also said he was surprised by having to conduct the APFT in his operational camouflage pattern uniform. Haynes, a CBRNE NCO, also from the 773rd agreed. “When you sweat a lot, it weighs you down; like running with a water suit on you,” he said. Not all the seven competitors had the chance to move up to the USARC level. Thompson, a Civil Affairs NCO from Grafenwoehr, had among the highest scores, but had a profile which makes him ineligible for advancement. For him, it was a chance to contribute to the spirit of Best Warrior and to test himself. His present duties have him in the office, and so he enjoyed doing Soldier tasks, getting back to the basics and getting dirt on his hands, he said. He also liked the camaraderie that was built between the competitors. “Most of us never met before this. We had dinner together last night on our own, and we’re all going to have dinner tonight as well,” he said following the post-competition ceremony. To those thinking about doing Best Warrior, Thompson had guidance. “Do not hesitate. Find a way to train, because your command wants you to go and will help you do it.”

New signs protect garrison trees, habitats by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate A rescue mission is underway, but this operation doesn’t involve helicopters, Humvees or Soldiers — just an Army of two from the Directorate of Public Works Environmental Office. Their mission: to protect the trees and habitats within the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz by posting signs to educate and call attention to safeguarded areas, trees and wildlife. The pair began their environmental awareness campaign a few months ago, said Claudia Weber, environmental engineer. “We have a meadow at Sembach that used to be mowed on a regular basis, although the garrison wasn’t required to maintain the area,” she explained. “When the decision was made to reduce the mowing frequency, wild bees began inhabiting the meadow — and in Germany, wild bees are protected.” Fortunately for the bees, the garrison’s decision improved their home, but as a result, the meadow looked overgrown and unkempt. “People began complaining that the area looked neglected. That’s why we posted signs to let them know the grass isn’t long because it’s neglected — it’s a home for wildlife and insects,” Weber said. Signs are also used to mark safeguarded trees — both living and dead, said Lutz Andres, urban tree manager and pest management coordinator. Andres explained a situation where some landscapers wanted to cut down a tree trunk because it didn’t look aesthetically pleasing where it was located. “I went to the location, looked at the tree and gave them permission to cut it,” Andres recalled. “When I got back to the office, I was told it was a valued tree, but I wasn’t aware of it. So, marking specific trees that should be preserved makes sense and will protect others in the future.”

Andres and Weber will post signs to educate and call attention to preseved areas, trees and wildlife within the U.S. Army Garrison footprint. Photo by Mary Ann Davis

Another more recent example took place during the construction of the new Defender Café Dining Facility at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Weber said. “During the construction of the dining facility, the contractors wanted to reduce the size of a 200-year-old tree to place trash dumpsters beneath it. I explained how old the tree was and asked if there was another area to place the containers. They agreed to put them

elsewhere,” she said. “Unfortunately, they had already broken ground under the tree and damaged some of its roots. We had to call in a tree expert to seal the roots properly and keep the damage from spreading. So, the tree was saved and the trash location was changed, but posting signs would have prevented the damage.” Some people may think, “So what? It’s just a tree. You can plant another

one.” The issue becomes the amount of time it would take to replicate a tree of that size. It may take several hundred years — if it’s healthy and survives that long. Signs may save trees serving as homes for other animals and insects. But it’s not just live trees that need protecting, said Andres. Dead trees and stumps are sometimes protected to preserve the biological network living inside, he said. And saving these ecosystems supports biodiversity and keeps the network thriving. Caves and some protected shrub areas within the garrison footprint will also carry signs to educate and inform people of what and where particular ecological elements are. “We opened an old mine on Baumholder, and now we are waiting for bats and amphibians to move in,” Weber said. They are installing signs there to make people aware and respectful of these habitats, since bats are a protected species in Germany. “We want people to understand what species inhabit the caves, and we ask people not to disturb them,” she said. Although these garrison signs are small and simple, they convey an important message — safeguarding the garrison’s natural resources protects both the environment and humans, Andres said. “All species have rights like we do to live, and we’ve already reduced so many habitats already; therefore, we need to protect what we can,” he concluded. “We are required to be good stewards of protected species and habitats, and these signs brings us one step closer to that.”

The Directorate of Public Works Environmental Office posted this sign in Sembach to inform community members of the prospering habitat in this meadow. Signs like this will be placed in safeguarded areas so that ecological networks can continue to thrive without human interference. Courtesy Photo

CDC caregivers offer more than babysitting

by Azure Hall U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Volunteer Child development centers play an important role in helping military families through daily life. These onpost child care centers give military parents the option of full-day, partday and hourly care for their children. The caregivers at the centers are committed to providing children with developmental experiences in nationally accredited environments, going above and beyond the role of a simple babysitter. Jessica Ruiz, supervisory program specialist at the Landstuhl CDC, wants the public to know just how hard the employees of the CDC work to help their students progress. CDC caregivers are responsible for the children’s education, safety, health and development to the next age group in the center: infant to toddler, toddler to preschool and preschool to kindergarten. Ruiz said their

days resemble those of school teachers more than babysitters or daycare workers. Aside from establishing daily routines, CDC caregivers also create lesson plans, meet learning objectives and grow and develop important skills. “Our caregivers are trained to deal with each child as an individual and meet his or her needs by individualized instruction,” Ruiz said. These trained early childhood professionals work with a wide range of children in their care — different backgrounds and cultures, different developmental needs, special needs children and children who are dealing with parent deployments, just to name a few. Along with many having educational backgrounds in related fields, caregivers receive monthly early childhood training and have CPR and First Aid certifications. “Our caregivers know and understand the children on a personal level. They learn what each child’s strength and weaknesses are in their classroom and are able to form lesson plans

around the needs of the children in their care. Some children are in our center from six weeks old all the way though kindergarten.” The responsibilities of the CDC caregivers don’t end when the daily lesson does. Ruiz explained that they also do observations and assessments on all the children in their classroom, wash toys, change diapers, do laundry, clean the shelves, and make sure shelves are labeled and have the proper toys for each section of the classroom. Many of these roles are unseen by parents who drop their children off day after day, she said. Along with an understanding of the challenging daily lives of CDC caregivers, Ruiz also wants the Kaiserslautern Military Community to be aware of the important role that the CDC plays in helping military service members accomplish their missions. As a prior “military brat” herself, Ruiz said she knows firsthand how crucial their services are. “I love knowing we provide not

only a safe and healthy place for the children to come to, but a place where all children are loved and accepted for who they are,” she said. “The CDC is a second home to many of these children and they look up to our teachers as role models. When a parent comes to one of our CDCs they become part of a family who will help them through any tough situation they come across. Most of all, they can go to work knowing their child is loved and well taken care of by professionally trained teachers.” May 7 to 11 is Teacher Appreciation Week and Ruiz said CDC caregivers shouldn’t be forgotten during this time. For those looking to show their appreciation, Ruiz explained that while candy and flowers are nice gestures, what your children’s caregivers really need is a little bit of help. Volunteering in your child’s class is a great way to show that you care. If schedules don’t allow for that, remember that a simple thank you goes a long way.

AF announces changes to Courses 14 and 15 WASHINGTON

AFNS

Effective immediately, Air Force officials have removed the requirement to complete Courses 14 and 15 for all Airmen serving in the active component. Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Airmen will have the option to complete their enlisted professional military education through distance learning or in-residence attendance. Airmen will no longer be required to complete distance learning prior to in-residence attendance at the noncommissioned officer and senior

NCO academy. Active component Airmen will complete EPME in-residence, while Guard and Reserve Airmen can complete through DL or in-residence. “Ultimately, Airmen are always encouraged to focus on their own self-improvement and life-long learning,” said Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services. “However, because our enlisted members have a 100 percent opportunity to attend inresidence NCO and SNCOA, this change provides Airmen greater flexibility and reduces redundancy in professional military education.”

Kaiserslautern softball wins twice vs. Lakenheath

Senior pitcher Ally Alamos and Kaiserslautern coach Jesse Costa enjoyed a late Lady Raider rally that clinched a win in game one last weekend.

Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Late run production was the key and Mariana Conklin went 4-for4 batting, helping Kaiserslautern score a 12-6 win its softball opener against Lakenheath last weekend. SOCCER Ramstein beats Vilseck boys 7-0 At the Kaiserslautern Field, Tony Villella got a first half goal after an assist by Gavin McMillan. Ramstein had a couple more chances to score but things didn’t really start clicking until the second half. Ramstein opened up with five goals in the first 20 minutes of stanza two when seemingly every chance they had resulted in a goal. Vilseck had been playing fairly deep, with multiple players behind the ball and overall stout defense. “It was hard for us to get through their back four and back eight,” head coach Dominick Ludes said. “But we had been working specifically on something in practice - efficiency in front of goal. It was nice to see how the team was able to apply that in second half and allow us to pull away. We didn’t use outside and wings a lot in the first half but we changed it a bit to attack more with our Anthony Villella wings.” Second half goals and assists came, in order, from Chris Slover (Kyle Vargas), Anthony Villella (Vargas), Slover

The Lady Raiders won again in the second game, sweeping the Lady Lancers in preparation for a key series coming up this weekend at Stuttgart. In the first game, Conklin was the most consistent KHS batter, knocking in two runs along the way. Olivia

Warren and Ally Alamos combined for five more RBI and four base hits to boost the home team. Alamos was the starting pitcher and went the distance, with five strikeouts in five innings of work. She walked 10 batters but Kaiserslautern was able to strand a good number of

(Dylan Grimes), Villella (Grimes), Slover (Carter Robison), McMillan (Diego Colon). The two hat tricks by Slover and Villella allowed Ramstein coaches to insert additional players, who also turned out productive. “Several others came in during the second half but the pace of game did not slow down,” Ludes said. “We played attacking football and we continued scoring goals. Our JV team also won and stayed undefeated, so we are doing well overall. If we stay injury free and level headed – the kids don’t lose their focus, we will always have chances to win games.” Junior goalkeeper Garrett Erickson had four saves in the shutout victory and Ramstein will play Black Forest Academy in Senior Day action Saturday, with girls’ kickoff at 10 a.m. and the boys slated to go around noon. The Ramstein girls stayed unbeaten with a 9-0 win, in a match where they allowed zero shots on goal for Vilseck. The Lady Royals (3-0-1) got penalty kick scores from Baleigh McFall and Allie Davis. Other Ramstein goals came from Kat Ruffing, Jaelynn Galindo, Haley Deome, Haylie Scott, and Gabs Janes. Four of the Lady Royals goals were set up with assists from Brittany Cunningham, Davis, Deome and Anna Abell. Karla Robillard and Kelsey Mashburn

had goals in a 3-0 win by the Ramstein junior varsity. Nicole Stout had an assist and there were again no shots on goal allowed by the Ramstein defense. BASEBALL Kaiserslautern sweeps SHAPE, splits with Lakenheath Kaiserslautern got two hits and two runs batted in from Mathias Perrin, using a 10-run third inning to clinch a 12-6 win against last season’s DODEA runner-up Lakenheath last Saturday. The Raiders proceeded to give up a huge inning to the Lancers in the second game and wound up losing 16-2. In game one, Ronin Sherman threw a four-inning complete game and gave up only three hits. He had two hits to help his own cause and drew a walk in his three at-bats. Jace Robinson also had two hits and and two RBI for the Raiders. Justice Harper added two more RBI and only one batter in the KHS lineup struck out, so plenty of balls were put into play. The second game was a monstrosity for the hosts, as Lakenheath began by scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second to open a wide lead. The third frame was the clincher, though, as the visiting Lancers scored nine times and found widespread success against two Raider relief pitchers. Kaiserslautern lost a chance at

May 4, 2018 them with good defense. Senior catcher Chloe Whisennand had to leave the game due to a knee injury so Conklin came in to catch, while Erin Nuckols stepped in at second base. The Lady Raiders went back and forth with the Lady Lancers in the second game before pulling Mariana Conklin away with big run production in the final innings. Abby Young pitched six good innings and won the game after striking out seven and issuing only five walks. Young was big at the plate, too, with a 3-for-5 day and three RBI. Alamos backed her with two hits and one RBI. “The second game I brought in some of the younger players to fill some positions, because some veterans were out due to injuries,” KHS coach Jesse Costa said. “Abby Young pitched outstanding and I am really proud of the way everyone stepped up and helped us get the win.” sweeping four games over the weekend when their hitting stalled out. Lakenheath pitchers struck out five KHS batters and held the Raiders to just three hits. Kaiserslautern had 10 errors in the disastrous final game and was to face a Frankfurt team in a non-division home game Wednesday, before traveling to meet Stuttgart in two games this weekend. Against SHAPE, Kaiserslautern used big final innings and won 10-5 and 8-5 at Pulaski Field. Kaden Senkbeil, Nolan Sherman, and Perrin each had base hits and two RBI in the first win. Robinson and Colin Zayd both rapped doubles, while Harper and Perrin teamed with Zayd on the mound. The second win over SHAPE mirrored the first, when KHS scored four times in the last inning. Ronin Sherman and Robinson were key producers in Kaiserslautern’s nine-hit attack. Robinson had a triple and the Raiders got doubles from Perrin and Zayd. threw in the win. Nolan Sherman was the winner, throwing 22 total pitches with no hits and four strikeouts. Senkbeil started the game but exited after two frames. Ramstein idle after 5-5 tie against Frankfurt Warriors Nemo Kindle and Jerod Junkins had two hits apiece in the nondivision road matchup at Frankfurt. Tieran Shoffner had a double and Kindle hit a home run, with three RBI. Kindle, Shoffner, Kaleb Bellew, and Chance Baker all pitched, combining for five strikeouts and four walks allowed. Ramstein is set to host Spangdahlem on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Southside Field. TRACK AND FIELD Kaiserslautern, Ramstein continue prolific seasons It’s becoming a habit this spring season, Kaiserslautern and Ramstein are seeing prolific performances from both their boys’ and girls’ track and field teams. The squads went to a meet in Vilseck this past weekend and every KMC team finished in the top three in point standings. Using appliances in your German home One of the things that is most common between your U.S. home and your new German living quarters is the fact that you have appliances to assist you with your everyday tasks. Whether it is doing the laundry or washing the dishes, appliances provide a nice break from manual labor, but that is where the similarities end.

Plan for longer cycles

If you have not already experienced the two hour laundry cycle, be prepared for some extra time when washing your clothes. European appliances will take double (and sometimes longer) the time to run through the complete washing cycle than your units from the states due to efficiency requirements. Although the time difference can be a little inconvenient, especially if you are doing a wash for a

larger family, you may notice your clothes come out a little cleaner. The added bonus of the longer cycle means your clothes are soaked in water longer (and with less water used than the U.S. units) resulting in cleaner clothes. It allows your detergent to activate over time, which releases the enzymes (and not from a quick flash of hot water). Another reason for the longer cycle is the units only load cold water and they need time to heat. One more area of efficiency is the spin cycle. The speed of the spin

is much faster, which wrings out more water and thus takes less time in the dryer. Don’t forget to turn off the water feed to your washer after each cycle (and don’t forget to turn it on before you start a load). Tip: Add baking soda to your whites to make them gleaming white. Add salt to your dishwasher

No, your dishwasher doesn’t need a little extra seasoning, but it does need a little help to keep the system clean. Adding salt to your unit prevents the system from clogging up while softening the water. It is important to note that you do not just throw a dash of salt in the unit before you push start. You should refer to the manual of your unit, but if you don’t have one handy (you can always look online), you should look for a screw cap on the floor of your dishwasher. Dishwasher salt (sodium chloride) can easily be found in your grocery store or hardware store. Read the box for instructions, but it usually needs to be added about once per month.

Tip: Be sure to clean out the trap under the cap before adding the salt to the washer.

Clean out hidden lint traps in EU dryers

Your EU dryer is likely a dehumidifier disguised as a dryer. Often there is not a vent connected to your unit which means the moisture has to go somewhere. The water is sucked out of your clothes and trapped in a container (often under your dryer) that needs to be emptied after each use. What you might not know is there are hidden lint traps that need to be cleaned out to keep your dryer running like a top. The trap you are familiar with is the dry lint trap, which is easily visible when you open the door. The hidden wet lint trap is the one that can go unattended for months, resulting in poor Please read more on the last page of the properties section

Continued from front page drying. It is usually located just above the water catch reservoir behind a panel that needs to be removed. The wet trap should be cleaned out every few uses. Check the manufacturers manuel to get a detailed description of where your wet lint trap is located. Tip: Don’t use your dryer to save a lot of money on your electric. You

may have noticed a lot of your German neighbors hanging their clothes up to dry as dryers are thirsty for lots of energy.

Get a larger refrigerator from FMO

Depending on what type of place you find to live in, you may come across the “college size fridge” in your kitchen. It can be quite common to find these small units in

Europe, especially in apartments. If you want to give it the old “college try” and use the smaller fridge, more power to you. Just be ready to go to the store three or more times a week. This is normal protocol for Europeans, but Americans usually want to go once for the week and be done with it. Your local FMO often has a nice mediumsized option that gives

you enough capacity for your needs, but doesn’t take up your whole kitchen, as German kitchens can often be much smaller than those found in the U.S.

Tip: If available, get the “tall but skinny” fridge as it likely will fit better in your kitchen in Germany.
