Joint training maintains proficiency by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 37th Airlift Squadron completed a weeklong airdrop training exercise with a 10-bundle container delivery system drop at a drop zone near Grafenwöhr, Germany, March 16. Ten-bundle container delivery systems were dropped in order to support a field-training exercise for the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team from Vicenza, Italy. It also gave pilots and loadmasters an opportunity to practice this particular airdrop. “We went to Grafenwöhr for a mass CDS drop, which we don’t get to do very often,” said Capt. Marci Walton, 37th AS C-130J instructor pilot. “The Army was doing some training that we were able to use as an opportunity to practice doing these drops. We had one of our guys on the ground to help call winds and make sure that we were good to drop the CDS.” The 37th AS resupplied the Soldiers on the ground with 10 pallets of consumables, giving them what they needed to carry out their training. “The 173rd ABCT has been out here See AIRDROP, Page 6

Airmen Always — Yes!

Commentary

by Col. Scott T. Fike 86th Maintenance Group commander Most, if not all, organizations are guided by fundamental principles as envisioned and espoused by their leaders. These principles may be referred to as focus areas, themes, tenets, priorities, etc. Regardless of the nomenclature, they help provide an organizational compass or framework within which to operate. “Airmen Always — Yes!” is one of three 86th Maintenance Group tenets and is broken down into the following elements: care/concern/compassion, feedback and recognition, dignity and respect, personal accountability and compliance, and family welfare. The commander’s focus article today highlights recognition, care/concern/compassion, and family welfare while also touching on resiliency and key spouse concepts as well. It is no secret that recognition of an organization’s Airmen provides that vital catalyst so important for facilitating high morale and subsequent mission excellence. The 86th MXG recently held its Maintenance Professional of the Year banquet, a celebratory event recognizing Airmen for a year’s worth of awesome mission excellence accomplishments. In addition to 20 Airmen recognized at the annual MPOY awards banquet, other Airmen such as Tech. Sgt. Ramiro Gonzalez III, Tech. Sgt. Ryan McGahan and Staff Sgt. Rickey Willard also performed in an exceptional manner throughout this past year. Gonzalez III, an aerospace propulsion craftsman assigned to the Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, maintained a perfect 12 of 12 pass rate with quality assurance evaluations while leading his team in completing more than 3,000 C-130J engine and propeller system repairs. McGahan, a programs manager in the Maintenance Operations Squadron, was the mastermind behind an MXG-wide facility reorganization project. He constructed CONFERENCE, from Page 1

an elaborate timeline that outlined relocation efforts of six organizations and three squadrons charted out over a two month period and was able to capitalize on manpower requirements, ensuring the project was completed one month early. And Willard, a precision measurement lab technician from the Maintenance Squadron, conducted 55 annual inspections as a quality assurance evaluator. His efforts facilitated flight training proficiency, directly contributing to an “Excellent” rating during the Logistics Compliance Assessment Program HHQ inspection. These Airmen and their accomplishments are indicative of what all our great Airmen within this group and wing do each and every day — Airmen who are truly deserving of well-earned recognition for all they bring to the fight. Now, it should come as no surprise that at the same time high points such as recognizing outstanding Airmen for outstanding achievements occurs, there will also be a few low points that occur along the way as well. For example, during the past several months, there were several MXG Airmen who lost loved ones and close friends, not unlike any other organization by any means. Nonetheless, it was a rough year for some Airmen directly and many others as well who also felt sadness related to a co-worker, supervisor or friend’s loss. An elderly mother died and though obviously painful, it did not come as a total surprise as life does come to an end — down here on Earth anyway. It is expected. But Airmen from the Maintenance Group also lost a 17-year-old son who was a high school senior, a precious newborn infant, and a young 26-year-old C-130 aircraft crew chief — losses that all occurred way too early in life and very unexpectedly. The care/concern/compassion displayed by Airmen helping Airmen was undeniably a powerful force in helping heal the emotional wounds and pain that can knock an Airmen

and an organization down. Our great Air Force Airmen demonstrated immense resolve and resiliency. They drew upon their personal faith — a spiritual domain of resiliency. They were there for each other and propped one another up as good wingmen do — a social domain of resiliency. And without missing a beat, these Airmen continued to ensure that mission excellence never suffered. We’ve all used periodic down days within the past year to “take a knee” while focusing on and participating in resiliency and wingman activities. These concepts are truly more than just downward-directed and mandatory programs wherein we’re simply required to check them off as having occasionally reflected on them. These concepts are “real,” just as the Airmen who so greatly benefit from understanding and practicing them are. As Airmen within the MXG and the entire wing have experienced time and again, no one knows the time nor place when the untimely and unpleasant cards of life will be dealt. But when they are dealt, a resilient organization with resilient Airmen who possess the capacity to care, to demonstrate concern and to show compassion will carry the day and help our Airmen — and their families, too. Focus on family welfare cannot be overstated enough as a critical key ingredient regarding any tenet associated with “Airmen Always.” Families are the proverbial backbone and glue that keep everything together and on solid footing, as active-duty spouses both at home and deployed afar, sacrifice long hours continually doing what is asked and required of them 24/7/365. We all recognize that family members sacrifice a great deal as well — 24/7/365 — and it becomes even more challenging when loved ones are deployed. Yards need to be mowed, homework needs to be accomplished, someone See AIRMEN, next page

solving some of these challenges,” Neubauer said. “When we share information and perspectives, we enhance the knowledge for everyone.” The military aerospace medicine community from throughout Europe and beyond is actively engaged in a longstanding partnership in support of the aviation community, not only to sustain health but improve human performance and capability.

S

exual Assault Awareness Month kicks off on Ramstein April 2 and will continue throughout the month of April. Since 2001, April has been designated as SAAM and the base Sexual Assault Program coordinator will start this year with multiple events. This year’s theme will be “It’s time … to talk about it! Connect. Respect. Prevent Sexual Violence.” Commanders will also help with the start of the campaign by handing out information and promotional items as people come on base, and first sergeants will hand out information to dorm residents as they leave for work and at the dining facility from 7 to 8 a.m. The installation sexual assault AIRMEN, from Page 2

needs to get the kids to the games, bills need to be paid and the list goes on. For many, the active-duty spouse may also be employed either as a civilian employee or as a fellow active-duty member. It is not surprising at all then when family members find themselves in overwhelming and extremely stressful situations. That said, a vitally important tool in the squadron commanders’ “family welfare toolkit” is the Key Spouse program. This important squadron commander program provides an essential link between the squadron’s leadership team and family members. Key spouses support families during separations and stressful situations while enhancing communication between leadership, spouses and other family members. Once the squadron’s key spouses are identified, the Airman & Family Readiness Center provides them with valuable training. This training equips the spouses with the tools and resources needed to help make a positive difference in the lives of an extremely valuable resource — our Air Force families. There is too much at stake for this familyfocus program to not flour-

They are responsible for developing, implementing and managing prevention and support programs and activities for sexual assault prevention and response and other areas of interpersonal violence and victim needs, as directed by the wing commander. “The SARC can be a great resource but victims of sexual assault have to take the initial step in letting me know you need help,” said Capt. ish. Key spouses can and do make a key difference. On that note, I am extremely appreciative of the MXG squadron’s key spouses who stepped up to make a difference within the 86th Maintenance Group. Thank you. So, “Airmen Always.” Hold them accountable and treat them with dignity and respect. Recognize them, show them care/concern/compassion, and facilitate their family welfare. And then watch what an organization with resilient Airmen can do. Watch what an organization with committed key spouses can do. It most certainly will be an awesome sight to behold.

The SARC is responsible for prevention education and training for all personnel on base. They also develop, implement and maintain an installation victim-support system to address broad spectrums of related issues and intervention needs. “SAAM gives people better insight into how to prevent and deal with sexual assault. Whether it’s for personal use or just becoming a well-rounded wingman, this information is important to know. It could (potentially) save a life,” said Senior Airman Michelle DeMers, SARC victim advocate.

Along with the awareness march, there are various activities planned throughout the month, including: March 26 — Sex Signals, 8 a.m., 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Hercules Theater. April 2 — Information hand-outs, 7 to 8 a.m. at the west gate, dorms and DFACs. April 2 to 13 — Informational booths, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the KMCC. April 9 to 13 — Self defense classes, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday to Friday, and 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Ramstein Community Center. April 20 and 21 — Night of AADD for victim advocates.

lide in your Common Access Card, type in your PIN and get your fingers ready to type because the Joint Hometown News Service program is now back up and running on Ramstein. According to the JHNS website, their mission is to tell the story of those serving their country — both military and civilian. The program produces a variety of print and electronic news products, highlighting the accomplishments and worldwide activities of individual members of the U.S. armed forces. “We encourage Airmen to share their stories, whether highlighting host nation partnerships, a promotion or receipt of a medal for achievement. We want them all,” said Maj. Elizabeth Aptekar, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs chief. What was once known as the Hometown News Release in 2008 has changed to the JHNS. So, what has changed you ask? As far as the end user (you) — nothing. You still upload the same essential information like name, rank, job, relatives and significant event information. Don’t believe it’s that easy? See for yourself by visiting the Ramstein Air Base JHNS site at https://hnforms.dma.mil/presentation/ lfserver/86AW. Near the end of the form you can even attach a photo you would like to use, whether it’s a profile photo, official photo or photo on the job. The service takes that information and creates an article, print or electronic, and submits it to a host of media outlets in the hometown of the member submitting. Each year, more than 500,000 individual news releases are distributed to the 14,000 newspapers, television and radio stations subscribed to JHNS’s free service. “The Hometown News Release program is one of the most effective communication avenues for Airmen to showcase their accomplishments and achievements with family and friends,” Aptekar said. “The resulting media coverage connects our overseas and stateside communities together.” Tell your family, friends and even your bitter rivals in your hometown what amazing opportunities you have been given by joining the Air Force. Col. William M. Stubbs, U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center-Europe commander, along with Lt. Col. Douglas Galuszka and Maj. Michael Ronn, welcome pharmacy officers from the Belgian army Feb. 15.

Belgian Army officers visit USAMMCE, LRMC A contingent of 10 pharmacy officers from the Belgian army visited the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center-Europe and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to get a better understanding of how the Army hospital, pharmacy and medical logistics systems work together to provide world class health care. After traveling from Brussels, the inquisitive group of pharmacists, led by Col. Guy Deschuyteneer, spent their first day at the medical logistics depot in Pirmasens. They received a command brief from the center deputy of operations, Lt. Col. Doug Galuszka, and then were given an accompanied tour of the facility. “We have a great partnership with the Belgian army, and this was a great opportunity for us to share ideas and learn from each other,” said Col. Mark Stubbs, USAMMCE commander. The following day the group had the opportunity to visit LRMC. Charles Roberts, LRMC public affairs officer, provided an informational tour of the hospital that included visits to

an ICU, physical therapy, the Chaplains Closet and one of the hospital wards. The tour ended at the LRMC Pharmacy where Col. Octavio Mont, ERMC’s pharmacy director, provided a briefing on U.S. Army Pharmacy in Europe and an in depth tour of the pharmacy. “This was the ideal venue to discuss how our two militaries provide pharmaceutical care,” Mont said. The Belgian pharmacists provided insight on similarities and differences between the U.S. and Belgian health care systems, they asked the staff many questions at both facilities, and they ultimately came away with a better understanding of how health care is provided to Soldiers and their families. USAMMCE is the theater led agent for medical materiel for European Command and Africa Command and partners with the Central Command TLAMM in Qatar to provide medical logistics requirements to the warfighter in Southwest Asia. Air Force Assistance Fund to kick off Monday by Airman 1st Class Hailey R. Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Assistance Fund annual charity event is scheduled to start Monday and end May 4. The AFAF sponsors four different organizations: Air Force Aid Society Inc., Air Force Village Inc., Air Force Enlisted Village Inc., and the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation. These charities provide

support to the Air Force family (active duty, retirees, Guard, Reserve, dependents and surviving spouses) either by giving grants, loans, or housing and health care. “If you do find yourself in a hard spot, that’s what the program is here for,” said Staff Sgt. Kyle T. Mullen, 1st Combat Communications Squadron tactical communications engineer. “It’s interest-free money, and to pay it back, an allotment can be set up that comes right out of the paycheck. The money

is never seen coming out of (your bank) account.” The Air Force Aid Society Inc. also started Housing Assistance Loan Overseas, a program designed to bridge the expense gap that often develops for Airmen assigned overseas who are required to pay upfront costs for housing. HALO is one of the many examples of how the AFAF helps support the Air Force family. This year’s goal is to raise $191,028 for the AFAF.

Representatives from each squadron, group and wing are available to accept donations on behalf of the AFAF throughout the weeks, said Tech. Sgt. Eric D. Villafaña, 1st CBCS tactical communication engineer and AFAF unit representative for the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing. Check and cash donations are accepted. Allotments can be set up by filling out a form with one of the AFAF representatives. “The AFAF is an important

charity to donate to because it is Airmen helping Airmen. As a service, it is imperative that we take care of our members, retirees and their families,” Villafaña said. “It’s important that Airmen have resources available in times of adversity. With that, they can focus on the mission without having to worry about other issues.” The five-week campaign is scheduled to kick off with a breakfast Monday for commanders at the Ramstein Officers’ Club.

President proclaims ‘National Day of Honor’ by American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — On the ninth anniversary of U.S. forces moving into Iraq, President Barack Obama has proclaimed March 19 to be “A National Day of Honor.” Below is the text from the president’s proclamation: Nine years ago, members of the United States Armed Forces crossed the sands of the Iraq-Kuwait border and began one of the most challenging missions our military has ever known. They left the comforts of home and family, volunteering in service to a cause greater than themselves. They braved insurgency and sectarian strife, knowing too well the danger of combat and the cost of conflict. Yet, through the dust and din and the fog of war, they never lost their resolve. Demonstrating unshakable fortitude and unwavering commitment to duty, our men and women in uniform served tour after tour, fighting block by block to help the Iraqi people seize the chance for a better future. And on December 18, 2011, their mission came to an end. Today, we honor their success, their service and their sacrifice. In one of our nation’s longest wars, veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn wrote one of the most extraordinary chapters in American military history. When highways became mine fields and uncertainty waited

behind every corner, service members rose to meet the task at hand with unmatched courage and determination. They learned languages and cultures, taking on new roles as diplomats and development experts to improve the communities where they served. Their strength toppled a tyrant, and their valor helped build opportunity in oppression’s place. Across nearly nine years of conflict, the glory of their service — as well as the contributions of other members of the U.S. government and our coalition partners — always shone through. The war left wounds not always seen, but forever felt. The burden of distance and the pain of loss weighed heavily on the hearts of millions at home and overseas. Behind every member of our military stood a parent, a spouse, or a son or daughter who proudly served their community and prayed for their loved one’s safe return. For wounded warriors, coming home marked the end of one battle and the beginning of another — to stand, to walk, to recover and to serve again. And, in war’s most profound cost, there were those who never came home. Separated by time and space but united by their love of country, nearly 4,500 men and women are eternally bound; though we have laid them to rest, they will live on in the soul of our nation now and forever. To them, to their families and to all who served, we owe a debt that can never be fully repaid. When we returned the colors of United States

Forces-Iraq and the last of our troops set foot on American soil, we reflected on the extraordinary service and sacrifice of those who answered our country’s call. Their example embodied that fundamental American faith that tells us no mission is too hard, no challenge is too great, and that through tests and through trials, we will always emerge stronger than before. Now, our nation reaffirms our commitment to serve veterans of Iraq as well as they served us — to uphold the sacred trust we share with all who have worn the uniform. Our future is brighter for their service, and today, we express our gratitude by saying once more: Welcome home. Now, therefore, I, Barack Obama, president of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 19, 2012, as a National Day of Honor. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities that commemorate the return of the United States Armed Forces from Iraq. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth. Lt. Gen. William T. Lord visits Ramstein by Lt. Robert M. Lee 693d Intelligence Support Squadron Lt. Gen. William T. Lord, Air Force chief of warfighting integration and chief information officer, visited Ramstein in February to host a town hall style presentation in the Hercules Theater. His presentation was targeted at the cyberspace career field and how it would have to adapt in the Department of Defense’s current climate of downsizing and decreasing spending. Directly after his presentation, Lord visited with Chapter 158 members of the Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association at the base golf course. There, he spoke on the ever changing cyberspace domain in a more personal setting.

‘The Foreigner’ opens at KMC Onstage “Blazny blit hahaski.” You don’t understand? Translated, that means, “The Foreigner is hilarious!” In Tilghman County Georgia, two hours south by good road out of Atlanta, is a rustic fishing lodge run by Betty Meeks, a good-hearted widow who is hanging onto her home and livelihood by a thread. Occupied by a strange mix of characters (is anyone who they seem?), the lodge is the setting for “The Foreigner,” the latest offering from KMC Onstage. A crowd-pleasing comedy about the magic of kindness, the play’s complexity emerges as the audience learns the secrets and hidden agendas of the characters. With a plot that includes misunderstandings, secrets, lies, a horde of unsavory villains and a heartwarming ending, “The Foreigner” will keep the audience entertained from beginning to end. Characters in “The Foreigner” include the aforementioned Betty Meeks; Froggy LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who runs training sessions at a nearby Army base; Charlie Baker, an introverted and emotionally damaged Englishman; Reverend David Marshall Lee, a fine,

upstanding Tilghman County preacher; Catherine Simms, a romantically confused former debutante; Owen Musser, a shady property inspector with plans of his own; and Ellard Simms, a dimwitted country bumpkin. “The Foreigner,” by Larry Shue, was originally produced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theater in 1983. Winner of two Obie awards and two Outer Critics Circle awards as Best New

American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production, “The Foreigner” has played to worldwide audiences large and small. “The Foreigner” is being performed by KMC Onstage through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. The cast of seven actors and a support staff of director, lighting designer, sound designer, stage manager, costume designer and

backstage crew include active-duty Soldiers, Department of Defense civilians and Department of Defense Dependents Schools teachers from the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities. “This play is laugh-out-loud funny and the cast is top-notch,” said director Leo Kosley. “I’m very excited to be able to bring this play to KMC Onstage at long last.” “The Foreigner” will be a KMC Onstage entry to the Tournament of Plays, a competition that includes entries from all over Europe with the awards ceremony on April 21 in Heidelberg, Germany. “The Foreigner” opens at KMC Onstage today to Sunday and continues through March 30 to April 1 for a total of six performances. “The Foreigner” will be the first play to be performed at the KMC Onstage theater on Kleber Kaserne since the renovation of the facility. ‘Greater Tuna’ opens at the Hilltop Theater Small town Texas. Really small town Texas. In fact, Tuna is the fictional third smallest town in the great state of Texas. But the citizens of Tuna are anything but small. Tuna is populated with a full cast of exaggeratedly stereotypical small-town (and somewhat small-minded) characters. “Greater Tuna” is a latest offering from the Baumholder Hilltop Theater in which two actors play 20 different characters (including men, women, children and a dog). With 46 quick costume changes, “Greater Tuna” offers fast-paced comedy for the entire family. “Greater Tuna” portrays a day in the life of small-town America. The story centers on radio station OKKK and two radio disk jockeys, Arles Struvie and Thurston Wheeler, who broadcast headlines and news — that is, when they remember to turn on the transmitter. Tuna citizens pop in and out of the radio station with regularity, airing their concerns, giving their opinions and in one case, running for the city council. Other characters include: Didi Snavely of Didi’s Used Guns and Knives; Harold Dean Lattimer, the weatherman whose forecasts include locust swarms, dust storms and tropical storms — all at the same

time; Petey Fisk of the Greater Tuna Humane Society who seeks support for all types of animals — from the pet of the week to endangered scorpions; and Bertha Bumiller, card-carrying member of the Smut Snatchers of the New Order and matriarch of the ultimate dysfunctional family. “Greater Tuna,” by Joe Sears and Jaston Williams, is the first of four plays set in Tuna, Texas. Since its first performance in 1981, Tuna has seen worldwide success playing to audiences on and off Broadway, at the Whitehouse, at Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival, and countless other venues around the world. Though the characters may seem concocted, most are actually based on real people known to the playwrights. The cast of two, Eric Danzeiser and Tom Navo, bring all 20 characters and the town of Tuna to life with their support staff of director, lighting designer, sound designer, stage manager, costume designer and a crew of backstage dressers. The team includes active-duty Soldiers, Department of Defense civilians and Department of Defense Dependents Schools teachers from both the Baumholder and the Kaiserslautern military communities. “Directing this play has been on my personal bucket list for a long time,”

said director Johnny Mangum. “This is a play where the actors have to be on their toes every second. Tuna is pure comedy — though occasionally with a dark edge to it.” “Greater Tuna” will be a Baumholder entry to the Tournament of Plays, a competition that includes entries from all over Europe with the awards ceremony on April 21 in Heidelberg, Germany. Tuna opens at the Hilltop Theater today and Saturday and continues

The 86th Force Support Squadron congratulates Andre Tuzo, who was recently named Vogelweh Youth Programs’ 2012 Youth of the Year. Andre, 17, son of Staff Sgt. Jerry and Lina Proctor, is a senior at Kaiserslautern High School. He is a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet and the president of the Kaiserslautern Keystone Club, which is a collaborative program run by the Force Support Squadron’s Teen Center and the Boys & Girls Club of America. Andre works hard to keep his grades up and takes his ROTC and Keystone Club duties seriously. Still, he says he knows when it’s time to work hard and when it’s time to have some fun. In his free time, Andre likes hanging out with friends and traveling. Andre considers himself a “true military brat,” noting that he’s lived at seven different duty stations and attended 11 different schools in his 17 years. He acknowledges that the life of a military child is not always easy, but he enjoys the perks that come along with the lifestyle. In particular, Andre loves making new

friends and learning about different cultures with each move. Andre says programs like those at the Teen Center also help military youth like himself feel at home no matter where they are. When his family was stationed at Katterbach, Andre enjoyed hanging out at the Teen Center with friends. At the Vogelweh Teen Center’s Keystone Club, he doesn’t just hang out. He’s also a leader who tutors other students, mentors younger children and volunteers in the community. Andre credits the Keystone Club with preparing him for his future by encouraging him to lead and helping him with college applications, scholarship applications and resume-writing. Andre’s goal is to attend the University of Maryland at College Park next year and to major in business administration or communications. There is no doubt he has a bright future, and the Force Support Squadron wishes him success and happiness. For details, call Kaureen Whittaker at 489-6155 or 0631-536-6155. Concentration camp survivor to speak at remembrance ceremony by Ed Drohan Europe Regional Medical Command Public Affairs HEIDELBERG, Germany — Dr. Eva Iszak Djordjevic was 17 when American Soldiers entered the infamous Dachau Concentration Camp in April 1945, liberating her and thousands of other prisoners who had survived the Holocaust. After being treated for typhoid fever, she returned to her home of Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), and hasn’t set foot on German soil since — until now. Djordjevic will be the guest speaker at the Days of Remembrance event from noon to 1 p.m. April 19 at Nachrichten Kaserne’s Wilson Theater in Heidelberg. The theme for this year’s event is “Choosing to Act: Stories of Rescue,” and all are welcome to attend. Djordjevic, now 84, was a young Jewish girl in 1941 when her father was taken to the Topovska Supa

Concentration Camp in Belgrade. She was able to escape to Budapest, Hungary, shortly after, where she lived using false documents, working as an apprentice in a women’s clothing workshop. In 1944, Djordjevic was taken by the German army that had by then occupied Hungary and was forced to march with other Jewish women 30 to 40 kilometers a day, stopping at times for forced work details, until they reached the Austrian border. There, a train took them to Ravensbruck, a notorious women’s concentration camp 90 kilometers north of Berlin. The women were subjected to beatings, harsh work and starvation. In a letter written sometime after liberation, Djordjevic said that from 4 to 8 a.m. the prisoners were forced to stand on Appell Platz, a square where the roll calls were held. The temperatures were -10 to -20 degrees Celsisus and Djordjevic was wearing only a summer dress and thin jacket.

“At 8 a.m., exhausted and frozen, with a cup of black water coffee and a thin piece of bread made of a mixture of flour and scrapings of wood, we (were) pressed to work outside,” she wrote. The women were forced to do heavy labor both day and night. Thousands died from starvation and torture, but Djordjevic held out until she was transferred to Burgau and then eventually Turkheim, both Dachau subcamps, in March 1945. By this time, she and most of her fellow women prisoners couldn’t work because of the effects of starvation. “The Appell continued there, also the starving, humiliation, but they could not send us to work because we were living corpses,” she recalled. After being liberated by American troops and treated for illness and starvation, Djordjevic returned to Belgrade where she learned her father had been killed by his captors just days after she last saw him.

“After all (my psychological) and physical sufferings, I started a new life, but an eternal scar persists in my wounded soul,” Djordjevic wrote. “The irreplaceable loss of my father, of many relatives and friends, loss of my home, (psychological) and physical sufferings, humiliations, tortures cannot be replaced with even all the money in the world.” In the decades since the end of World War II, Djordjevic has lived in Belgrade and raised her family, but has never been back to Germany. Her visit to participate in the Days of Remembrance will be her first trip to Germany since leaving 67 years ago. Days of Remembrance runs from April 15 to 22. The U.S. Congress established the Days of Remembrance as the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust. For more information on this year’s event, call Master Sgt. Jason Reisler, Europe Regional Medical Command equal opportunity adviser, at 371-2604.

LRMC Synapse Program: Helping service members with TBI by Dr. Kendra Wagers Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, rehabilitation psychologist/TBI research coordinator Traumatic Brain Injury has been called the signature injury of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and after 10 years at war, many of our service members have been repeatedly exposed to events that have the potential of causing a brain injury. More than 1 million military personnel have deployed since 2001 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn in Iraq. Current deployment operations have involved service members in ground combat and hazardous security duty. TBI is the most prevalent injury among warfighters during OND, OIF and OEF as a result of contact with enemy forces or weapon systems - mortars, improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades - and from head impacts from accidents, enemy action or other factors. Deployment, therefore, could include being exposed to gun shots, blast exposures and other significant potential TBI generating events. Given the significant length of the war and repeated deployments of service members to dangerous duty assignments downrange, there is an increased risk of exposure to possible TBI events as well as increased risk of increased symptoms arising from repeat exposures. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center has developed an intensive rehabilitation program to help, called Synapse, which focuses on providing care to service members who experience TBI. This interdisciplinary team approach was developed as a response to the dynamic nature of potential TBI events service members could experience.

Service members at war are particularly at risk of TBI, resulting from combat blast injury, which is usually characterized as resulting from primary (e.g., exposure to over pressurization wave from blast), secondary (e.g., impact from blast, debris), tertiary (e.g., impact after displacement), or quaternary (e.g., burns, inhalation of toxins, hypoxia, psychological effects) blast effects. Such blasts effects can produce profound traumatic injuries in the brain, including damage to the parts of the brain that make vision possible, affect auditory processing, impact balance and coordination, impair cognitive functioning, and/or impede occupational performance. Our team of clinicians works to collaborate and individualize care for our service members, to educate them on the recovery from injury, and foster greater understanding of what they can do to protect themselves. LRMC’s Synapse program has a strong clinical team consisting of three TBI neurology providers, a clinical psychologist, a TBI optometrist, an audiologist, two physical therapists, two speech therapists, an occupational therapist, a rehabilitation psychologist and several nurse case managers. The entire team evaluates service members experiencing TBI and determines if intensive services would support the service member in their return to full duty. Providers often collaborate on care evaluating the patient in an integrated service delivery environment to maximize therapeutic gain. The intensive program at Landstuhl is individually developed to meet a service’s unique symptom presentation and can be a few weeks or up to eight weeks long as appropriate. The team also works closely with command to review job function and performance and tailor treatment toward addressing specific job capacities

each service member may need to function within their military occupational specialty. Follow-up services and treatment plans are developed at discharge and can often be implemented via telemedicine, home therapy programs or with local providers at the patient’s home base of record. A vital component to our discharge and follow-up plan is educating service members and their support system on engaging in their own recovery and considering all the factors in their lives that influence a positive course of rehabilitation. A positive course of recovery from brain injury begins and ends with education. Education and outreach to command is not only an integral part of the intensive program, it frames our service delivery. Every component of our intensive program emphasizes the importance of a holistic and dynamic recovery process. As one TBI specialist has written, re-framing how we think about an issue to create a positive outlook can be a vital part of recovery. Developing awareness, understanding and education on the expected course of recovery from brain injury creates empowerment. Empowerment is how we build function, create a sense of normalcy and develop self efficacy. Efficacy powers us toward our goals. The goal of the intensive Synapse program is to offer a comprehensive intensive TBI program that complements the TBI care throughout the European theater. We also work closely with TBI providers throughout the European theater to coordinate care, disseminate educational resources and foster recovery. Our mission is to not ameliorate symptoms but foster understanding and recovery. If you would like to learn more about the program, call the LRMC TBI Rehab Clinic at 590-5601 or 06371-9464-5601.

Soccer program scores goal with kids, parents by Mindy Campbell U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern

I

nside an empty hangar on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, a dozen young children and their parents surround a fenced-off patch of green artificial turf. Coach Mike Rabb blows his whistle and the kids don practice jerseys, grab soccer balls and start practice — despite the chilly weather outside. For the past two months, children took part in U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern’s Child, Youth and School Service’s indoor soccer clinic — the first of its kind offered through SKIES, or School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills, said Shay Berchtold, SKIESUnlimited director. “We had soccer during the summer, spring and fall, but nothing in the winter,” Berchtold said. “Lots of parents are interested in doing something with their children and don’t want them out in the rain. Through this program, kids can keep up with soccer and get some exercise during the winter.” It was successful, with 82 children enrolled, she said. The largest group was for 3- to 5-year-olds. Staff at the garrison’s Family,

Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff saw a need for a winter program and knew of German indoor soccer’s popularity. So, they decided to offer their own program. Unlike other programs, SKIES soccer clinics are taught by a professional coach, instead of volunteers. Rabb, who has played competitive soccer for more than 25 years, runs both the indoor and outdoor clinics. When Rabb held his first soccer camp back in July 2009, he had three children participate. Last summer, more than 350 children attended his camp. He focuses on teaching soccer drills and conditioning to help players develop basic and fundamental soccer skills. Having an indoor venue allows Rabb to offer clinics despite foul weather, he said. “With the little guys, if the weather is bad — if it rains — I have to cancel practice,” Rabb said. “I wanted to develop a good soccer program so that they can play year-round.” For parents, the idea of indoor soccer was also appealing. “It is especially nice in Germany to be able to do this indoors during the winter,” said Shannon Bachman, whose son Jacob, 5, took part. “This is great because he is getting exercise

Soccer referees needed

With the winter high school athletic seasons over, the scene now turns to spring sports, including DODDS soccer. The Kaiserslautern Officials Association, which provides sports officials for Department of Defense schools, is now looking for soccer officials. The only beginning qualifications include soccer experience at the high school or college level, a desire to give back to the sport, and the ability to travel to schools throughout the DODDS schools zone on Saturdays. KOA referees receive good game pay, mileage and overnight lodging when needed. For more information about calling these DODDS games, which begin in mid-March and continue until early June, contact Al Shaff at 06371-946084 or shaffal37@yahoo.com. All previously registered KOA soccer referees will also need to attend a rules clinic and complete registration forms for the 2012 season. Referees are needed in all parts of Germany, including Bavaria, as well as in the Benelux.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the first annual Pfalz Triathlon, which takes place June 24 at the Gelterswoog, just south of the Vogelweh. There will be need for helpers not only the day of the race but also in setup and teardown work before and after.

and it is good to be around kids his own age, which will help him before he goes to kindergarten next year.” Although Lance Blackwell, 7, prefers playing outside, the indoor clinic keeps his soccer skills sharp, he said. “My favorite part is scoring goals,” Lance said. “I like that I can keep on maintaining my soccer skills.”

Being part of the volunteer team that will manage an international group of athletes will also provide various benefits to each helper. For full information (in English) and to register as a volunteer, go to www.tri-pfalz.de/volunteer,1,20.html.
