Flosi takes his place as 20th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force

Chief Master Sgt. David A. Flosi was formally installed March 8 as the 20th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

In remarks after the formal “Change of Responsibility” ceremony in which he assumed the job from retiring Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass, Flosi emphasized both the opportunity before him and what it means to the Total Force at a time of dramatic change and challenge across the service.

“As I assume this role, I’m aware of the challenges ahead,” Flosi said. “We live in a rapidly evolving world, where new threats emerge with alarming frequency, and the demands on our Air Force continue to grow.

“While demanding, I am confident in our ability to rise to the occasion. I am confident because over the course of my career, time and time again, I have witnessed the dedication and professionalism of our Airmen,” he said.

Flosi’s installation as the highestranking enlisted noncommissioned officer in the Air Force completes a total overhaul of senior military leaders for the service. Gen. David Allvin was installed as Air Force chief of staff on Nov. 2 and Gen. Jim Slife officially became Air Force vice chief of staff on Dec. 29.

All three senior leaders, along with Department of the Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, will be instrumental in successfully establishing farreaching plans to “reoptimize” the Air Force to better confront China and other modern-day adversaries.

Allvin stressed that effort in welcoming Flosi during the dignified ceremony, which also included comments from Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and, prior to that, Air Force chief of staff.

“Dynamic, fast-paced environments require agile, determined leadership — that’s exactly what Chief Flosi brings to the fight,” Allvin said. “We’ve got work to do, and I know Chief Flosi is ready to move out on reoptimization to enhance our readiness and mold our one Air Force.”

In his remarks, Kendall offered a

glowing tribute to Bass and provided clear guidance for what he expects from Flosi.

Bass, he said, “has served over 30 years in the Air Force, and we are an infinitely better organization because of your service. She’s been a standout leader at every level.

“Chief Flosi, you’re going to have to fill some pretty big shoes. I look forward to working together and to everything you have to offer. I want to welcome you to an incredible team. … We will need your experience and your perspective to make sure the needs of our Airmen and their families are always at the forefront of all of our efforts,” Kendall said.

Brown echoed Kendall in his praise and admiration for Bass.

“Jo, I’m so glad I hired you. You’ve been an inspiration for me. We were able to break barriers together,” Brown said, referring to their shared histories in which Brown was the first African American to be named Chief of Staff of any branch of the military and Bass’s selection as the first

woman to serve as a Service senior enlisted advisor in the history of the United States military.

“You’ve been an inspiration to me. You’ve been an inspiration to our Air Force; you’ve been an inspiration to our nation,” Brown said.

Flosi steps into the job being vacated by the retiring Bass, who senior leaders said set the standard by which all subsequent Chiefs will be judged.

“Chief Bass’s passion for Airmen and their families has defined her time as our 19th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force,” Allvin said. “Her tireless work on their behalf has propelled our force forward. Even after over 30 years of dedicated service, I have no doubts that she will continue to be an advocate for Airmen and airpower moving forward.”

In her remarks at the dignified ceremony, Bass highlighted memories and achievements from across her 31-year career. She thanked a list of people who helped her at every

point, including her husband Rahn, her parents, and a large group of Air Force colleagues who served as mentors and role models.

She directed special praise to Brown, who selected her to be chief master sergeant of the Air Force when Brown served as chief of staff.

“General Brown, chairman, thank you for hiring me as your wingman and chief. The best words you shared with me were ‘proceed until apprehended.’ And I did just that,” she said.

“I may have gotten apprehended once or twice, maybe three times. In any case, you let me be me and get after the things that matter to our Airmen and their families. It’s been an honor for Rahn and I to serve alongside you and Sharene,” she said.

Flosi’s new job is similar to his previous post but on a larger, more high-profile stage. He arrived at the Pentagon from Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where he served as the command chief master sergeant.

That role was similar in many respects to the role he now assuming.

At AFMC, he is the senior enlisted leader and the primary advisor to the commander on all matters regarding the readiness, training, professional development, and effective utilization of the command’s 89,000 total force Airmen.

Like his predecessors, Flosi pledged to lock arms with Airmen to help them — and the Air Force — thrive and succeed.

“Today, as we stand on the dawn of a new era, we recognize we are serving at a time of consequence. It is imperative we acknowledge the urgency of the challenges we face,” he said.

Later in his remarks, he added, “Fellow Airmen, my commitment to you and to our Air Force is unwavering. As we navigate the complexities of great power competition and seek to optimize our force, I pledge to be your wingman.”

Prior to his tour at WrightPatterson AFB, Flosi served as the command chief master sergeant at the Air Force’s Sustainment Center at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma.

Flosi began his Air Force career in 1996 as a nuclear weapons specialist. That focus expanded over the years to include various leadership duties in conventional and nuclear munitions, as well as missile operations, program management and test and contingency operations.

Like Bass and previous CMSAFs, Flosi will be the public face for Air Force personnel to those in all levels of government. He will be a personal adviser to Allvin and other senior leaders, both military and civilian, and will be expected to provide insight on issues regarding the welfare, readiness, morale and proper utilization and progress of the Air Force’s entire cadre of Airmen.

Flosi emerged as the clear choice from a group of the most highly respected, experienced graduated command chief master sergeants from across the Air Force’s global operations, officials said. These leaders were selected based on breadth of experience, recommendations from senior commanders and performance across each candidate’s Air Force career.

For disposal of light fractions, it is mandatory for townhouse and stairwell residents to use yellow bags, because this kind of trash is recyclable. Yellow bags are available for on-base residents at the Self-Help Store during office hours: Mon–Fri from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sat from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The use of yellow bags is also mandatory for local economy housing. The bags are free of charge and provided by your local recycling center.

Items that belong in the yellow bag: Plastics, foils, milk cartons, metals etc... Items that don’t belong in the yellow bags: Glass, shoes, paper, spray cans etc...

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Fire Department competes for CY23 DOD F&ES Awards

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Fire Department will represent the Installation Management Command in the Department of Defense Annual Fire and Emergency Services Awards competition for the best Large Fire Department.

The DOD F&ES award program is a competitive process spanning across Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Defense Logistics Agency fire departments, fire officers and firefighters. The IMCOM awardees will move on to compete with their peers at U.S. Army Materiel Command, U.S. Army, and finally to DOD.

“We submitted four strong nominations and were confident about a good outcome,” said Lt. Col. David Castillo, director of emergency services and garrison provost marshal, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “We were happy to see 3 of the 4 nominations win at the IMCOM level.”

In addition to winning the Best Large Fire Department category, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s fire department has three firefighters recognized as best in IMCOM in the Civilian Fire Officer, Fire Service Instructor, and Fire Chief categories.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Fire Department won Large Fire Department of the Year at the IMCOM-Europe level in 2017, 2018, and 2019. However, this is the first time they have won 3 awards in the individual categories.

Here are the individual category winners:

• Deputy Fire Chief Adam Montoya, identified as IMCOM’s best Civilian Fire Officer, authored the Garrison’s Community Risk Assessment and Standards of Cover; he also built the firstever certification program, linked the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz fire department with DOD Fire Certificate Authority, and arranged for course enrollment/testing through sister services.

• Acting Assistant Chief of Training Tobias Lang, recipient of IMCOM’s best Fire Service Instructor, displayed

exceptional skill in managing the department’s annual training budget, scheduling 52 classes, budgeting $195K, and yielding 137 certifications (a 71 percent increase over previous year). He is also credited for being the architect behind the rookie training program, establishing the training curriculum, and teaching foundational skills during the 10-day course; he instructed 12 classes and prepared 27 fire fighters for the regional training center.

• Fire Chief Gerald Adams, selected as IMCOM’s best Fire Chief, commanded the response to an overturned fuel tanker incident at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks’ main gate, quickly stabilizing the damaged trailer while preventing the spillage of 6,000 liters of fuel. In doing so, he averted an environmental disaster and was able to restore base access within an hour. Adams also reinforced partnerships with German authorities when he responded to a 25-acre wildland fire by shuttling 10,000 gallons of water and supplying the front line responders who were shielding the town and major transportation artery. He received a letter of appreciation from the city mayor for his prompt response. In addition to these achievements, Adams also wrote the largest Mutual Aid Agreement in Germany between U.S. and host nation partners. This

agreement outlined detailed response expectations and general aid procedures, bringing together three cities, four counties, and 10 communities.

The award winners were announced in a memorandum signed by Lt. Gen. Omar Jones, IMCOM commanding general that states each fire department and individual that is nominated represents the best of IMCOM’s 73 installations and over 4,000 firefighters. Their extraordinary performance speaks well to their commitment to protecting our installations and keeping our communities safe.

Castillo attributed his department’s victory to a well-rounded team effort with strong garrison leadership at its core.

“Superb leadership from the garrison commander, the directorate, our fire chief and our team commitment to the mission, customer service, training, and innovation were all factors that contributed to our success,” he said.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Fire and Emergency Services directorate is an all-hazard response agency, who currently has 199 employees and is looking to fill another 20 positions in the upcoming months, said Castillo.

“The scope of our services includes structural fire response, emergency dispatch, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, basic life support, fire prevention and public education,” he said.

The F&ES Award winners will be announced, at echelon in the coming months, with the culminating DOD winners expected to be announced in May. AB 201 bazaar supports Agadez community

his brother to pay for high school.

“The bazaar is very [helpful]. It helps a lot [of] local people in Agadez,” Ismael said. “Everyone is happy for this bazaar.”

Local Agadez artisans earned a collective 7.5 million West African Francs (about $13,000) during a general bazaar at Air Base 201, hosted by the 409th Air Expeditionary Group on March 2.

As the first bazaar of the year, the event hosted 45 vendors from the community, nearly twice as many who participated in the previous held in December 2023, and drew 150 Americans from the base to support the local economy while deepening cultural understanding.

“The bazaars help AB 201 maintain a positive relationship with the community of Agadez, allowing us to support the economic stability of the vendors,” said U.S. Army Capt. Lindsey Martinez, 437th Civil Affairs Battalion Alpha Company team leader.

Vendors for this specific event were primarily from a local cooperative of artists, Martinez said. Their merchandise ranged from handcarved figurines to traditional clothing, unique jewelry and more.

Ismael, a vendor whose family owns a jewelry store in Agadez and has participated in bazaars at the base before, said the money made during the event will allow him to care for family and send children to school. One piece he sold will allow

Fatima, another vendor from Agadez, shared Ismael’s sentiment, expressing her appreciation for the opportunity to support her family as well as practice English with Americans.

“I am an English teacher, and I like to improve this language for my students,” Fatima said. “These are very good opportunities...American people do, for all the people. This kind of bazaar helps us.”

Both Fatima and Ismael said the funds not only help family businesses, but also are especially beneficial as Ramadan, the Islamic observance month intended for spiritual growth, draws near.

“With this money, we can buy everything we want to have a good fasting,” Fatima said.

Martinez said the interactions between service members and Agadez vendors despite occasional language barriers are her favorite part of hosting the events because everyone is kind and the vendors are appreciative of the purchases.

“It’s cool to see how people are able to communicate without a common language,” Martinez said.

Coordination for the next general bazaar is underway, with the event expected to be held in the summer of 2024.

Navy scientist helped develop GPS

Gladys West was among a small group of women who did computing for the U.S. military during the early days of the Cold War, including Defense Department work that eventually became the basis for the Global Positioning System.

The Navy hired West — then Gladys Mae Brown — in 1956 as a mathematician to do computer programming and coding at Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, Virginia. While there, she met fellow Dahlgren mathematician Ira West, and they married in 1957.

In the early 1960s, she participated in an award-winning,

astronomical study that proved the regularity of Pluto’s motion relative to Neptune.

From the mid-1970s through the 1980s, West used complex algorithms to account for variations in gravitational, tidal and other forces that distort Earth’s shape. She programmed the IBM 7030 computer, also known as Stretch, to deliver increasingly refined calculations

for an extremely accurate model of the Earth’s shape, optimized for what ultimately became the GPS orbit used by satellites.

West was born in Sutherland, Virginia, on Oct. 27, 1930. Her mother worked in a tobacco factory, and her father worked for the railroad.

Much of her childhood was spent working on the family farm, but West had aspirations other than farming. She wanted to become a scientist, so she studied hard, made excellent grades, and earned a full scholarship to Virginia State College, a historically Black public university.

In 1952, West graduated from the university with a Bachelor of Science degree in math. She went on to earn a graduate degree in math in 1955 just prior to beginning her job with the Navy.

West worked at Dahlgren for 42 years and retired in 1998. She later completed a doctorate in public administration at Virginia Tech.

West and her husband live in King George County, Virginia. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

“I think that Dr. West is another one of those hidden figures in our military that play a critical role in the advancements that not only affected our ability to fire missiles accurately but also enable everyday

life when you pick up your phone and you’re trying to find something,” said retired Navy Rear Adm. Sinclair Harris during a Dahlgren awards ceremony for West last year.

Despite having helped to develop GPS, West told the Atlanta Black Star news website that she still prefers using a paper map when she drives.

Her many awards and recognitions include:

• Induction into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2018.

• The Webby Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

• The Prince Philip Medal by the United Kingdom’s Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021.

• The National Museum of the Surface Navy’s Freedom of the Seas Exploration and Innovation Award in 2021.

“The Navy stands on the shoulders of the geniuses that have been advancing our technology in the Navy… We’re standing on Dr. West’s shoulders to execute the mission of the United States,” said retired Navy Adm. Philip S. Davidson, former commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, at the Dahlgren awards ceremony.

The Port of Alexandroupolis cemented another key moment for sustainment history as it facilitated the reception, staging, and onward movement of the first “heavy” brigade in Greece March 11. The 16th Sustainment Brigade and 598th Transportation Brigade, with the help of Hellenic and Greek Allies, moved approximately 3,000 pieces of equipment off the cargo vessel Leroy A. Mendoca for the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division’s rotational deployment in Europe.

Prior to 2012, an ABCT was called a heavy brigade combat team. The 3rd ABCT’s equipment includes tanks such as M1 Abrams, M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, and other support vehicles. The unit has seven battalions with more than 3,500 Soldiers

that will be spread across Europe to enable the defense of NATO territory.

Maj. Steven Chase, deputy officer-incharge of 3rd ABCT’s port operation, said the coalition of U.S. and Greek elements were essential to making this mission happen, due to the sheer size of the unit and its equipment.

“Here at the port, we are proving a concept,” said Chase. “For the first time, an entire armored brigade combat team is moving through this particular port. An armored brigade combat team is very resource-intensive to deploy. It occupies a significant amount of space, it’s very difficult to move from a logistical standpoint, and sustainment of this element is very difficult.”

This specific movement further demonstrated the strong relationship between U.S. and Hellenic Armed Forces and proved the Port of Alexandroupolis to be a premier gateway to Southern Europe. From a logistics standpoint, Greece has been a key geostra-

tegic node to rapidly deploy personnel and equipment to the point of need.

Capt. Janine Donnelly-Cole, 624th Movement Control Team commander, which falls under the 16th Sustainment Brigade, said this mission is important to generate rapid combat power across the European theater. The port’s capabilities allowed U.S. and Greek personnel to conduct commercial line haul and staging for rail movement at the same time.

“As the vessel is downloaded by SDDC [598th], my team is doing simultaneous operations of loading up commercial line haul and rail going to the final destination,” said Donnelly-Cole. “For this mission there’s nine different locations we are sending the equipment to across Poland and Bulgaria.”

Capt. Ellen Gensicki, Delta Company commander, 588th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd ABCT, said the collective sustainment efforts at the port strengthened NATO relationships.

“It is an honor to work with our NATO allies and be able to experience not only the Greek culture, but enable NATO as a whole,” said Gensicki.

“Especially with 3rd brigade, a very competent and lethal brigade that is ready to answer the call. Since we are pairing with NATO, it just helps to further our relations.”

The Port of Alexandroupolis’ previous key moments include receiving the largest vessel ever to birth, Arc Endurance, as well as the longest vessels to ever birth, the USNS Mendonca and USNS Brittin. Along with the United States, five other NATO allies have used this port for their logistic missions: France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal.

This historic mission continued to prove Greece as a key NATO ally to assist in the execution of NATO regional plans. The collective sustainment effort between the United States and Greece at the Port of Alexandroupolis is great opportunity to showcase joint logistics across Europe in a contested environment.

Norovirus: More gastrointestinal infections than last year

Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain: General practitioners are noticing an increase in gastrointestinal infections this time compared to this time of last year. How can you protect yourself?

Norovirus is the official name for a group of viruses that cause the stomach flu. Healthcare and childcare facilities are particularly susceptible to these viruses due to the ease of transmission, the small amount of infective material needed to spread the disease, the short incubation period, and the fact that the virus can live in the environment for a long time unless adequately cleaned.

“Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain are the most common symptoms of norovirus,” said Lt. Col. Simeon Smith, European Regional Army Public Health Nursing Senior Nurse Executive at Public Health Command Europe. “Other symptoms may include fever, headache, and body aches.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control the greatest health risk from norovirus is severe dehydration, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with other illnesses.

Symptoms of severe dehydration include decreased urination or very dark urine, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, lack of energy and fainting. Parents of children in diapers may notice a decrease in the number of wet diapers,

although this may be hard to notice with frequent diarrhea.

Currently, there is not specific medicine to treat people with norovirus illness. However, there are things individuals can do when they start to experience symptoms of norovirus.

According to Smith, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluid to replace fluid lost from vomiting and diarrhea to prevent dehydration.

“Dehydration can lead to serious problems and severe dehydration could require hospitalization for treatment with fluids through your veins,” said Smith. “Keep in mind to drink water-based beverages, flavored ones are fine but without caffeine and alcohol.”

Because norovirus is more persistent

than other viral causes of gastrointestinal infections, Public Health Command Europe officials recommend staying home from work or school for at least 48 hours following any episode of vomiting or diarrhea to prevent the spread of the infection.

There is no vaccine to prevent norovirus and because antibiotics fight bacterial infections, not viruses, they are ineffective in treating the illness, according to the CDC.

People can become infected after consuming foods or liquids contaminated with norovirus, having direct contact with an infected individual or touching surfaces containing the virus. Symptoms can appear as early as twelve hours after exposure to norovirus, according to the CDC.

Hoop Goals: Baumholder Youth Program member awarded $5K grant to pursue basketball dream

Baumholder’s Youth Program, Child and Youth Services, Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, was recently selected to receive the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation Scholarship, awarded to one youth member of the Boys & Girls Club Association. The foundation aims to empower young individuals to chase and achieve their dreams through education, sports, and community engagement.

The Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation offers annual scholarships of up to $5,000 designed to support the achievements of youth and enable them to develop their talents and pursue their dreams in categories such as sports, fine arts, performing arts, and STEM.

This year, the $5,000 grant was awarded to Caleb Piggé, an active member of the BGCA Youth Program in Baumholder, and a talented athlete and basketball player.

“Caleb is a well-known high performer in the BGCA program,” said Ryan Flynn, Youth Programs director, Baumholder CYS, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. “He was also recognized as BGCA’s Northeast Regional Military Youth of the Year for 2023.”

Flynn said that Caleb has been awarded the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation grant a few times in the past — and that Caleb and his family have been great stewards with the funds made available by BGCA. So much so that BGCA has invited Caleb to speak about his experiences as a “Dream Chaser” at conferences and events, addressing professionals and peers alike.

“Caleb will apply the grant money he received this year towards his dream of playing basketball at the collegiate level,” said Flynn. “In the past he used the grant funds to pay for his attendance at elite basketball camps and help with the travel costs related to attending the camps. He has also been able to use the grant money to help pay for equipment, extra practice time and [private or extra] coaching sessions.”

Throughout the grant period, which runs from Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, an interested adult “champion” with a personal connection to the grant recipient provides support, guidance and mentoring for the youth in pursuance of their goals and development of a success plan.

The foundation was created by Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron, a former baseball player with the Milwaukee Braves (19541965), Atlanta Braves (1966-1975), and Milwaukee Brewers (1975-1976). Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982, Hank Aaron is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time.

Years after his baseball career ended, Aaron recognized the need to support young people who might need a helping hand or boost to achieve their dreams, and with that, he and his wife Billye, created the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation in 1994, later partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

The Aarons wanted to encourage youngsters to dream a dream and the foundation would be there to help make that dream take root and grow, with the idea that if talented young people have the opportunity to focus on their talents, they will certainly achieve.

“Caleb’s brother Chandler, who is now playing college basketball at Harvard University, received this grant multiple times while he was a member of our center,” said Flynn. “Chandler and Caleb are very determined individuals, and they used the grant funds to give themselves more opportunities to compete in competitive fields.”

Flynn said that the Youth Center staff works with families to fill out grant applications for youth members who have shown a real interest and talent in a sport/ discipline. The scholarship is open to all youth members in the community who are chasing a dream and may need a funding boost to do so.

“Families with aspiring student athletes understand the time investment and financial commitment required to compete and pursue athletic goals,” Flynn explained. “The Hank Aaron Foundation aims to offer these young athletes and their families an additional helping hand in their development and provide help where financial support may not have been available before.”

The support and recognition offered to the Piggé brothers by the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation reflect their dedicated focus and potential as athletes and citizens. As they begin their journey towards realizing their dreams, they carry not just the hopes of their family but also the pride and support of the entire Baumholder Military Community.

ABC IN KMC: Ostern

The following week, March 29 to April 1 marks Germany’s long Easter weekend. Both Good Friday (March 29) and Easter Monday (April 1) are public holidays in Germany and all stores, banks and official offices are closed. Switzerland and the Netherlands are closed on Friday, while Luxembourg, France and Belgium treat Easter Monday as a public holiday.

In Germany and many other European countries, Easter is historically a Christian holiday with church services on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Many traditions, such as the Easter bunny, egg hunts and chocolate or candy bunnies, are quite similar as in the United States, however, there may be a few customs you are not familiar with.

Not only does Easter mark the end of Lent, it also sweeps you into the spring feeling with a number of German customs to go along with it. As elsewhere in the world, children enjoy blowing out eggs, colorfully dying them and are eager to hunt for the ones the Easter bunny has hidden for them.

Beginning the weekend of celebration on Thursday, referred to as “Gründonnerstag” (green Thursday) by Germans, may not be so familiar. Tradition has it that some families

only eat pure vegetarian meals, preferably in green. Popular dishes include spinach with potatoes and fried eggs, potatoes with green herb sauce, a specialty from Frankfurt, or egg salad with mustard and herb dressing.

In honor of St. Peter, who was a fisherman, fish is typically served, fried or steamed, on Friday. Salmon with potatoes and green asparagus is popular, while kids may prefer simple fish sticks. An Easter Sunday dish could be “falscher Hase” (false rabbit), a type of meatloaf, or the traditional Easter lamb, served with rosemary potatoes and fresh spring vegetables. Typical desserts include carrot cake, a braid shaped cake called “Osterzopf” or cakes and cupcakes with fresh fruits and cream. Chocolate Easter bunnies, eggs, chicks and other sweets remain the all-time favorites for younger (and older) children.

Easter bonfires are lit in some villages, which traditionally served to drive winter spirits away. In some parts of Germany it is common to burn rotten wood and old furniture, no longer needed clothes and shoes, and even rags in the “Lumpenfeuer” (rag bonfire), so as to clear the house of unnecessary items, an early form of spring cleaning.

A popular sport during the season is “Ostereierschiessen” (Easter egg shooting). Contestants shoot at paper goals marked with Easter figures or eggs with the aim of hitting as many “eggs” as possible. Each suc-

cessful shot brings about a real egg and the winner of a whole tournament is crowned as the “Schützenkönig” (archer king).

You may find colorfully decorated flower bouquets or even wreaths with bright spring flowers such as crocus, primroses, tulips, daffodils and Easter ornaments in households and stores. Others decorate pussy willow or forsythia branches with small wooden eggs, bunnies or lambs or tidy up their front yards by hanging ornaments on bushes. Some communities even offer colorful and elaborate Easter trees in traffic circles or on market squares.

A somewhat older tradition is to pull moss from below trees and shrubs and bind it into natural Easter baskets for the bunny to fill with eggs and small gifts. Self-made willow baskets are also popular and younger families might plant wheat seeds into a glass bowl or vase about three weeks prior to the holiday for children to watch the Easter nest grow.

Along the coastal regions of the North and Baltic Seas, the Easter bunny likes to hop around the beach, lay eggs in the sand and children can dig for the precious “seafood” with buckets and shovels.

Rabbits have historically been seen as a sym-

bol of fertility (offspring can be up to 20 bunnies). In addition, in Byzantium a rabbit was an early symbol for Christ. Both in Greek and Germanic mythology, rabbits were considered to be holy animals for Greek Goddess Aphrodite and for Germanic Spring and Fertility Goddess Ostera.

According to legend, children were sent to meadows to search for eggs in Zürich, Switzerland, and since they more often saw rabbits than hens, they believed that the long-eared animals had left the eggs. In Germany, the rabbit first became popular in 1678 (Reformation time) by Protestant families and the bunny finally became a “star” thanks to the chocolate industry.

OHA survey empowers KMC service members

An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate.

The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses.

Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.

KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates.

The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses.

Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members.

Most impressive

Fast forward three years and I get it. However, a visit from my daughter prompted a day trip to a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Mosel River between Koblenz and Trier. Burg Eltz is owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century — 33 generations ago.

Burg Eltz is the castle that has impressed me the most and is now my favorite castle in Germany. Even in a region where it is almost impossible not to stumble over some castle ruins, this castle really stands out. Not many things are more associated with Europe than castles; after visiting Burg Eltz, I have to say it’s one of the best I have ever seen. Why? Well, let me tell you why.

That wow-factor

Burg Eltz sits in a lush green valley, hidden away from main road traffic. It is the first castle that has ever actually taken my breath away as we rounded a corner in the shuttle and got a look at the view. Unlike the vast majority of castles along the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, this was one of the few that has never been destroyed or badly damaged.

Burg Eltz’s setting is simply stunning, as it sits perched on a rock and surrounded by thick, wooded hills and the babbling Elzbach Creek on three sides. This setting was chosen strategically, since the location was perfect for exacting tolls on passing traders, which provided much of the early wealth for Burg Eltz’s residents.

Getting there

You can reach the castle on foot by a scenic fifteen-minute walk through the woods from the parking lot or taking a much longer hike from a nearby town. On the other hand, you can cheat like we did

and take the shuttle.

Either way, you will have a “wow” moment when you round the corner and see Burg Eltz lying before you.

The history

Unlike many castles that have been handed back and forth, or created only as an escape for royalty, Burg Eltz has been a real, live, lived-in castle since the first day of its medieval construction. Yes, the same family has lived here for thirty generations, and during this time, Burg Eltz has never been destroyed. It was attacked once, but never conquered. And in the world of castles, this is rare. It allowed Burg Eltz to remain much as it was in its earliest

days, and to be home to a vast collection of authentic family heirlooms and artifacts. I was able to take a few photos before our tour guide came in and gently reminded us that photos are not permitted. Oops.

Inside the castle walls

Once inside the castle walls, the main courtyard is a hodgepodge of design styles, reflecting the fact that three different branches of the family once resided in the structure together.

Guided tours

All tours are guided and depart every 10 to 15 minutes in German. Guided tours in other languages, including French, Dutch,

and English, are also available but depart less frequently. Even more gems are present inside the residential quarters, as all tours include a visit to the rustic medieval kitchen and stately Knights Hall, where the families gathered for large feasts and conversation.

Location

Burg Eltz is located in the Mosel Valley and is an easy drive, although the GPS address took us a bit off course. As you get closer to the castle, you will see signs for parking.

The castle is just under 2 hours north of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 30 minutes northwest of Wiesbaden and 3 hours northwest of Stuttgart.

Opening times

The castle is open to the public daily from March 24 to Nov. 1. The hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Food, restrooms and souvenirs

Burg Eltz has a gift shop and two small cafes that serve meals and snacks. They are open daily when the castle is open. Restrooms are conveniently located outside the castle, near the café.

Credit cards are accepted at the gift shop, but you will need to bring Euro for the entrance fees, food, shuttle bus, parking, etc.

Fitness Program is offering a brand-new Youth Sports Bowling Clinic taught by experienced volunteer bowling coaches at the Ramstein Bowling Center, Bldg. 2139 on Ramstein Air Base. Baseball & Soccer Start Smart Registration

Start Smart Baseball and Soccer registration for Kaiserslautern is now until March 29 or when slots are full. Cost is $30. Free Dance Lessons at Armstrong’s Club
