Whether you’re from the coast or from somewhere inland, there’s something magical about water. Müritz National Park, which is located in the northeast German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is definitely magical. Billed as the “land of a thousand lakes,” the park doesn’t disappoint. Water is everywhere, accessible, and beautiful. Plus, the park has one of the coolest aquariums in Germany!

Commonly referred to as “Big Week,” the operation consisted of raids against enemy industrial targets and aircraft facilities throughout Central Europe, often with hundreds of bombers and fighters in each raid.

Air Force, combining the personnel and equipment of disparate organizations into one force element, the 435th CRG was created on Feb. 26, 1999. Just two months after its inception, the CRG hit the ground running and deployed in response to an escalating conflict in former Yugoslavia.

Tasked with rapid deployment to austere locations, the CRG’s inaugural mission to Tirana, Albania, for Operation Shining Hope in 1999 exemplified its purpose. There, the group established a massive base camp at the Rinas Airport to facilitate critical relief efforts for refugees amidst the turmoil and support the deployment of Task Force Hawk, an Army helicopter assault force.

However, the roots of the CRG’s mission extend further back, drawing inspiration from the IX Engineer Command during World War II. As part of the Ninth Air Force, aviation engineering units like the 435th Troop Carrier Group played a pivotal role in building, camouflaging, maintaining and defending expeditionary airfields, including participation in the historic Normandy landings.

Over the past quarter century, the CRG has not only upheld these proud traditions but has expanded upon them, showcasing unparalleled skills and dedication. From deployments in Tirana to operations spanning Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the CRG has consistently demonstrated its capability and resolve in executing critical missions.

One notable deployment occurred in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where the CRG supported Operation Enduring Freedom, overcoming harsh winter conditions to construct an air base accommodating more than 3,000 coalition forces. In 2003, the CRG earned Airborne Assault credit for their role in establishing Bashur Airfield for Operation Northern Delay in Northern Iraq, enduring challenging conditions

before returning to Ramstein.

“Since February 26, 1999, the men and women of the CRG have answered our nation’s call,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Pat Rayner, 435th CRG commander. “From Albania to Iraq, Kyrgyzstan to Diyarbakir, Mozambique to Manda Bay, 101 to 201, and from J-Town to Malacky, the CRG has extended our nation’s global reach, brought relief during humanitarian disasters, protected our partners and allies, and projected combat power to the forward edge.”

Their unwavering commitment to service, marked by courage and sacrifice, ensures the group continues to play a vital role in USAFE’s mission to defend vital U.S. interests, deter aggression and deepen relationships with the Air Force’s allies and partners by projecting combatready airpower in the European and African theaters.

On the anniversary day, the 435th CRG held a historical briefing where Airmen spoke about significant events that shaped the legacy of the group. Then they had a formal dinner together as a team.

Retired Col. Clifton Bray, the 435th CRG’s first commander, attended and served as the 25th Anniversary dining-in keynote speaker.

“When you wake up each morning and look at yourself in the mirror, you are looking at who enables large humanitarian relief efforts to happen,” he said. “Whenever a nation’s leaders direct something to be done, there is another group of men and women who make it happen — that’s you. This is why the 435th CRG exists. There is no civilian equivalent to the CRG. Few will ever fully appreciate what you do, but that does not change the fact you are greatly needed.”

The threat picture has changed over the course of 25 years; however, the CRG’s capability to assess, open and operate expeditionary air bases remains a powerful asset for the joint force.

The joint agreement secures and ensures mutual aid and assistance between the agencies and communities in the event of emergencies, such as fires, floods and other possible hazards.

The garrison’s DES initiated the mutual aid agreement to establish reliable support systems between the partnering agencies when there is a need to respond and provide care for the shared communities throughout the Rheinland-Pfalz footprint.

“Today we gather to recognize and celebrate the importance of our mutual assistance agreement, which plays a critical role in strengthening our emergency response capabilities and promoting international cooperation in times of need,” said Lt. Col. David Castillo, DES.

From pilot to pageantry: Meet 1st active-duty Miss America

Story and

Air Force 2nd Lt. Madison Marsh made big plans for herself when she was young, although she never really factored becoming Miss America into that equation. However, after a tough competition in January, Marsh became the first active-duty service member to earn the crown. The 22-year-old U.S. Air Force Academy graduate is now learning to navigate life as a military member, a cancer research scholar and a public figure.

An early eye on the sky

Growing up, Marsh wanted to be a pilot and an astronaut, so she attended NASA’s Space Camp at age 13. When she learned that she could further her ambitions by going to the Air Force Academy, she started working toward becoming a cadet, even earning her civilian pilot’s license at 17 years old.

In 2018, Marsh lost her mother, Whitney, to pancreatic cancer. In her honor, the family started the Whitney Marsh Foundation, which raises funds for research and awareness to increase patients’ chances of early detection. Marsh took on the role of co-founder and president.

The following year, Marsh made it to the Air Force Academy, but she initially had bouts of homesickness.

“I was struggling — being removed from my family, grieving my mom, and now I’m in a really tough military environment,” she said, thinking back on her freshman year. That’s when she was inspired by her cousin, who was a pageant contestant, to give pageantry a try. “I decided to take a stab at pageants to see all the different ways that it could help me.”

Highlighting similar values

There are a lot of stereotypes regarding beauty pageants and the people involved in them, but Marsh said there are actually a lot of overlapping core values that pageants and the military share.

“I realized pageants have always been about community service, leadership, resume building and public speaking, and I think that is what made me be able to be successful in the Air Force,” she said.

After a lot of studying and several internships, including with NASA, Marsh graduated from the Air Force Academy in the spring of 2023 with a degree in physics. Upon her commissioning, she received a pilot’s billet. But soon after, she was crowned Miss Colorado, and her career trajectory started to change.

In September, Marsh decided to defer her pilot training to pursue a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School — an option made possible through the Air Force Institute of Technology’s Civilian Institution Programs. She’s also a graduate intern at Harvard Medical School and is working with experts from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute on early cancer detection research — continuing her work for the foundation dedicated to her mom.

In January, Marsh won the title of Miss America during the national pageant in Orlando, Florida. Between her Air Force commitment, her studies and now these public-facing duties, she’s got a lot to juggle. Thankfully, the Air Force has rolled with her change of fortune and put her into a public affairs/recruiting position for the year that she is Miss America.

“The Air Force has been really, really wonderful with me,” Marsh said during a USO event she attended on Capitol Hill in February. “Basically, anytime I go and do Miss America events, I’m also giving back to the Air Force to ensure people know about the message of what it means to serve as 2nd Lt. Marsh — the different ways that they can get involved in the military, whether it be in the Air Force or other branches or different jobs.”

Honoring her mother

As far as her Harvard research goes, Marsh said she’s still working with her advisor and is excited about

the possibility of bringing potential legislation related to their research to Capitol Hill over the next year.

“Now I understand the science side and [how to ask] medical professionals, ‘What do you think needs to be done for patients, and how can we get that done through legislation?’ Because through Harvard, even though I only got to do one semester there, I have learned that it is really easy to make bad policy,” Marsh said. “I think the best way to making good policy is by intimately understanding from the source — with patients — and intimately understanding that scientifically so we’re enacting it properly. Now that I have all of those communities able to give me that knowledge, I’m really excited to get to use that piece to come forward here on the Hill and maybe get some things done.”

She said it’s also a blessing for her to be able to share her mother’s story on such a large stage.

“Losing her when she was 41 to pancreatic cancer — I want people to know her story. I want them to know the signs, the ways to get help … because I don’t think we do enough for pancreatic cancer,” Marsh said. “My mom was misdiagnosed when we had no cancer history in our family. She was healthy. She didn’t have any of those warning signs, and she still passed away. We need to do more for our patients, and being able to have a national platform and a voice now to work with people is so important. I can’t think of a better way to [showcase] the legacy of my mom.”

Dispelling misconceptions about pageantry and service

As the first active-duty service member to earn the Miss America crown, Marsh’s national platform may help dispel the lingering assumption that military roles are too masculine for the average woman. Marsh said young women can make any position their own.

“I hope that women are able to see that they can define their own role in the military — whether they

want to take it in the more feminine path or not — knowing that they are empowered to make that decision,” Marsh said. “I hope young girls can see that you can lead in the military, or you can lead in a board room, in the courthouse, in medical boardrooms — whatever it might be — and you can be taken seriously. Whether I’m in a crown and sash or whether I’m in my uniform, I serve as 2nd Lt. Marsh and I serve as Miss America simultaneously, and they do not take away from one another.”

When it comes to Miss America, there are several phases of competition: The public and private interviews, the talent portion, the evening gown and fitness competitions, as well as the social impact pitch. Between military fitness requirements and her work with the Whitney Marsh Foundation, the latter two weren’t a problem for Marsh. For her, she said the hardest part was talent.

“I’m not conventionally talented. I can’t fight, sing, dance or play an instrument — everyone would run off with their eyes and ears closed,” she joked. “So, I did a monologue on my first solo flight. It was really nervewracking because I’m not trained in theater … and I knew the weight of what I had to carry in my speech — that I needed to deliver it perfectly, so I was able to carry the strength and the image of what I wanted military women to be portrayed as. So, that pressure was weighing on me backstage, and it was really scary.”

For service members considering pageantry

When asked what advice she had for other active-duty women considering getting into pageantry, her answer was simple.

“Just do it,” she said, mentioning all the different opportunities that have opened up for her. “Without pageants, I never would have had this giant platform for community service, and you can really do with that whatever you want. They leave it as a blank slate. … The Miss America opportu-

nity has also enabled me to practice so much on public speaking, and that is a skill that you need throughout the military and throughout the rest of your life.”

Not to mention the great scholarship opportunities.

“I received $70,000 in educational scholarships through Miss America, and I think that’s such a beautiful way to open up doors for you and whatever phase of life that you’re in,” Marsh said. “So, I would challenge all the military women to join and do it because it’s only up from here. I would love to see some more girls in uniform showing up and competing in the Miss America opportunity.”

Her Air Force future

Within five years, Marsh went from being a small-town girl to a strong, successful figure who’s blazing a path in public policy, cancer research and the military. She said she’s still trying to comprehend it all.

“I feel like I haven’t had a moment to breathe yet to let it all sink in, but I will say I do feel very lucky. Without this opportunity, I obviously couldn’t share all the wonderful things the Air Force has given me, whether it be all the opportunities at the Air Force Academy or now being an officer,” she said.

Marsh clearly has a lot on her plate at the moment. As far as her future in the Air Force goes, she said at this point, anything is possible.

“This year has just opened up so many opportunities,” she said. “The Air Force has given so much to me to let me do this year [as Miss America], and I want to make sure that I have my best skillset and training in mind with whatever job they put me in postHarvard, because I want to ensure that I give back to them in the best way that I possibly can.”

Marsh still has the option to attend undergraduate pilot training once she completes her master’s degree. She could also choose to pursue one of 42 other line officer careers — the choice is hers.

Soulful Servant: Chaplain Idomele spreads joy through saxophone melodies

Proudly serving as a chaplain for the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, U.S. Air Force Capt. Joseph Idomele’s journey is a testament of undertaking challenges head-on and pursuing dreams despite the challenges.

Hailing from the vibrant city of Kano, Nigeria, West Africa, Idomele’s (EE-doh-meh-lay) inspiring journey launched from encounters with jazz, courtesy of his brothers’ always playing soul-stirring afrobeat music. The pull of unfamiliar melodies intrigued him, and he soon discovered Fela Kuti, a Nigerian composer also known as the “King of Afrobeat.”

Idomele found himself captivated by Kuti’s rhythms — a combination of American jazz and traditional Nigerian music — and by the positive messages of hope intertwined within the lyrics of the music, which Kuti used to confront political injustice in his country.

“Like Nelson Mandela, Fela was an activist who always sang and talked about man’s inhumanity against man,” Idomele said. “He always fought against inequalities the ’masses’ faced against rich and corrupt leaders, sentiments composed into the previously unknown form of Afrobeat.”

Inspired by Kuti’s contagious spirit and willingness to stand up for his beliefs, Idomele picked up a saxophone and learned to play, not realizing how greatly music would one day become a part of his life.

“Generally speaking, music is all around you in African cultures and communities,” Idomele said. “You just cannot help but gravitate towards music and it just becomes like the air you breathe.”

From the bustling city of Kano to the disciplined environment of the U.S. Air Force, Idomele’s story is one of the power of music, and equally as important: service before self, and the pursuit of his lifelong vocation.

Idomele’s roots in a reli gious environment in West Africa propelled him to become the man he is today, he said. His father worked as a Mobil Oil Executive, which afforded him oppor tunities like traveling internation ally, includ ing to the U.S. and Europe, and attend ing a private Catholic school where he dis

covered his call to ministry.

“[Why I wanted to work in ministry] is not explainable or something palpable,” Idomele said. “While [events in my life] certainly were influencers, there was just an innate, soul-seated calling to serve God. I wanted to serve God while serving humankind and ministry provided the pathway.”

As a child, Idomele’s father took him to gigs at his private hotels and businesses. It was there that he became drawn to a different way of life than his father’s in the business world. “I did not want to live my life that way,” he said.

Idomele’s discernment to enter ministry was further cemented when his father passed away. Following his father’s death, he remembers his mother regularly taking him to church to attend Catholic

During one

Mass Idomele was particularly struck by the words of the priest who while preaching said, “What does it profit a man if he gains a whole world and loses his soul?,” referencing Mark Chapter 8 verses 36-38.

“I became haunted by this question: What happens to one’s soul?” Idomele said. “I started asking, what happens to dad now and all his money, the properties, the houses and the wealth? What happens? And who or what is a priest? Someone told me a Catholic priest is a man who spends his life helping to order the soul of humankind correctly by serving God.” This resonated deeply in his spirit, he said.

As a student of human behavior, Idomele continued wondering why couples who vowed to spend their lives together would decide to dissolve their marriages — a bond that was intended to last for life. At a crossroads of such study and speculation, he consulted with his spiritual advisor who suggested he study relationships more deeply and pen his research findings on marriage and relationships to clarify his thoughts.

Idomele did just that and spent three years interviewing 500 married and divorced couples on the concept of marriage, an experience that helped confirm for him that his contemplations and choice to enter ministry were on target.

In 1995, those resonations and continuous contemplations of the meaning of life and death were codified into his ordination as a Catholic priest by Archbishop Mario Vigano. In this difficult commitment, he forsook dreams of creating a family of his own and instead embraced a celibate lifestyle for the sake of service to God and humankind, Idomele said.

Driven by his desire to draw needed attention to religious violence, Idomele began pursuing a career in law while living in the U.S. He enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles paralegal program and became a paralegal, practicing pro bono for three years in litigation, corporate and immigration law while also serving as a Catholic priest.

Idomele finally joined the U.S Air Force in 2014 after 13 years of service as a civilian priest.

“I finally decided to join the military,” he said. “I always wanted to fly a plane and said if I cannot become a fighter pilot, I’d rather work with those who fly the planes. That way, I’ll still get to see the planes and hopefully complete my private pilot training and be able to fly someday.”

Now, as a dedicated chaplain for Airmen across Ramstein AB, Idomele not only sees the planes, but also reaches out to the Airmen who fly them, nudging their souls by playing his tenor saxophone at community events and providing music lessons to beginners. From church services to promotion ceremonies, weddings and funerals, Idomele freely and graciously shares his passion for and love of jazz music with the world.

“I had been torn because I love children,” he said. “But it dawned on me that marriage and relationships are transient toward an ultimate end. This realization made me gravitate more towards [priesthood] and clearly caught my heart more.”

Following his ordination, Idomele served as a youth/hospitals/prison chaplain and served in various organizations in Nigeria. He also held a position as the vice president of the Northern Chapter in the Nigerian Christian Association in Jigawa, all the while nursing his passion for music by playing the saxophone, guitar and African-talking-drum for his friends and congregants.

During his time there, Idomele recalls witnessing a great deal of religious violence towards Christians by extremist groups. Churches were set on fire and many Christians were massacred. Some of his friends, parishioners and priests became victims, to include his senior Sister who narrowly escaped with scars of a matchet blow to her head.

Idomele managed to escape such violence and immigrated to California in 2001.

“I did not emigrate [from Nigeria] because I was hungry,” he said. “I made the decision because of the religious violence and persecution wrought on Christians. Ultimately, I think that is also what propelled me to join the military — sensing ways I could bring attention to that issue: Man’s inhumanity to man in the name of religious fanaticism.”

“Just knowing I’m able to provide something that brings joy to people and myself makes me happy because I love to serve and I love to make people happy,” he said.

In addition to bringing joy to others, Idomele hopes to also continue fine-tuning his craft after he departs Ramstein AB with aspirations to release his own jazz gospel album someday. Most importantly, much like Fela Kuti, he hopes he can one day become a voice for the voiceless.

Idomele continues to recall the quote by Saint John Bosco, “Do not try to excuse your faults: Try to correct them,” as words of inspiration for himself and those he serves.

“I always encourage Airmen by constantly reminding them to remember their future is not predicated on their past, and their past will not equate their future if they are willing to put in the work to change and learn from and rise from their mistakes,” Idomele said.

He also encourages Airmen to extend mercy and kindness to anyone struggling. “Be that positive light wherever you go. Just be kind to people and smile and be happy no matter what your situation may be — for nothing is permanent.”

Whether in or out of uniform, Idomele exemplifies service before self through his kindness and positivity. His commitment to people is never off-duty, constantly advocating a paying-it-forward attitude, hoping this resonates with every person he encounters.

BCSC’s volunteer efforts enhance quality of life for BMC

The Baumholder Community Spouses’ Club achieved its goal of giving back to the community in 2023 by awarding over $41,000 in scholarships and grants to various students and local organizations. These funds were made possible by the profits generated by the Baumholder Thrift Store.

Established in 1984, the thrift store operates as a non-profit community service run by the BCSC, whose top priority is to help the Baumholder Military Community members meet their needs.

“We have an amazing community here and have great support from them. Most days we can get as many as 30 to 40 people or more through the store, but we are trying to reach as many as possible,” said Annmarie Rydberg, thrift store manager.

Rydberg has been volunteering at the store since March 2021 and was selected as store manager in April 2022. She said that the merchandise found in the store is made up of items exclusively donated by community members.

“We even have people drive from other posts in the Kaiserslautern Military Community area to donate,” she said. “People can donate in two different ways – either by stopping in during regular store hours, or by leaving donations in our two unlocked containers on the left side of the building’s parking lot after hours.”

According to Rydberg, all proceeds from the BCSC thrift store are used for grants, scholarships, and other projects throughout the community.

“The BCSC thrift store is a great place for people to volunteer their time and have an opportunity to help others, give back to the community, and make social connections,” said

Liberty Fejeran, BCSC’s president. She said that the club is always looking for volunteers. Anyone who is interested can reach out to BCSC through their Facebook page or by requesting an Army Community Services packet at the thrift store.

Fejeran also said that Baumholder thrift store plays a crucial role in helping families new to the area.

“When new families arrive to Baumholder, they are often in need of basic items such as bedding, kitchen items, or clothing — the thrift shop provides a low-cost method for them to acquire needed or wanted items they would usually buy for higher prices somewhere else,” she said.

By turning donations into resources that can directly benefit those in need, the thrift shop contributes to a cycle of generosity and support that can have a profound impact on the community as a whole and is fully supported by Baumholder leadership.

“Our Baumholder Community Spouses Club Thrift Shop cultivates unity, resourcefulness, and supports our service members and their families — turning the simple act of giving and receiving into a powerful force for positive change,” said Col. Matthew Alexander, 16th Sustainment Brigade commander.

According to Fejeran, six students

were awarded $30,000 in scholarships in the Spring of 2023. The remaining funds were distributed to programs such as the Angel Tree and Community Good Works or were used for welfare grants to organizations like Baumholder Middle High School National Honor Society, K9s for Veterans Abroad, and others.

“The BSCS always finds ways to help out the community,” she added.

To be considered for grants and/ or scholarships, organizations must be non-profit and must benefit the Baumholder Military Community. They also must fill out a new request form every year.

“The same organization cannot be chosen for two years in a row,” said Fejeran. “The ones who received a donation last year will have to wait until next year to be considered again. Also, one of the requirements to be selected is to have an active membership through BCSC.”

The annual $20 membership opens opportunities for members to be considered for emergency grants — monetary donations that are awarded in occasion of special/emergency circumstances to active BCSC members, she said.

The Baumholder thrift shop serves a dual purpose. Not only does it provide community members with affordable shopping options, but it also contributes to the well-being of the community through goodwill work.

“These goodwill efforts can take various forms, such as supporting our schools, contributing to community events, helping those in need, or funding projects that enhance the overall quality of life on Baumholder,” said Fejeran. “By reinvesting the proceeds into the community, the thrift shop proves it is a valuable asset in community development and support.”

“Some of the projects we have worked on lately include the BSCS benches, located in front of the Thrift Shop, Cleanup Day at the dog park, and feeding the military police,” said Rydberg. “One of our future projects involves helping with the City of Baumholder cleanup for German Environmental Day on March 16.”

Rydberg would like to extend an invitation to everyone to go check out the thrift store.

“If you ever are in Baumholder, we would love for you all to stop by,” she said. “You never know what amazing gently used treasures you may find here. We love our community and appreciate the continued support they show us. We are hoping to continue to grow and be around for many years to come,” Rydberg said.

The GREATest BRITAIN road trip, Part 8: Outer Hebrides

I first fell in love with the Outer Hebrides, or Hebs as I call them for no reason at all, during a class trip when I was 18 years old. Do you know how beautiful a piece of nature has to be to convince a social-media addicted, fresh-air-allergy-sufferer and overall hard-to-impress millenial that its cold, rainy, wifi-less shores are the epitome of heaven on earth? Pretty damn beautiful, I tell you.

The islands boast wildlife such as eagles, red deer, otters and spectacular marine life including dolphins, orcas and humpbacks if you’re lucky. And I haven’t even gotten started on shooting stars and northern lights that can shine so brightly over there because of a complete lack of light pollution. Thanks to the infamous rainy weather, rainbows are extremely likely, sometimes even two at once, and always worth the soaked boots (I called them feet bathtubs throughout my whole trip but that’s enough of my travel jargon for one article).

The Outer Hebrides are a few small islands off the west coast of Scotland, the biggest one being split into two: Harris and Lewis. North Uist, South Uist and Barra are smaller islands in the south of Harris/Lewis. Additionally, there are more than fifty uninhabited islands that belong to the Outer Hebrides. Its average annual temperature is 44°F/6°C so you can imagine that it’s not the ideal place for tanning but summers are quite mild and without uncomfortably cold air, we would never be able to see the Northern Lights so we can’t really complain about that either, can we? It rains a lot, which only makes the sunshine that much more appreciated.

Streets are shared with sheep and it’s a very wholesome experience. The only kind of traffic jam I want to be stuck in on my morning commute, to be honest.

Landscape

White, sandy beaches that can compete with the Caribbeans or Bahamas line the western coast of South and North Uist and Harris, while rough waves hit the cliffs and shores of Lewis in the north. During

the summer months, the ferries are always packed with cars and travelers but most of the time you will find yourself all alone with the ocean. Where do all these people and camper vans go once they get off the ferry? I have no idea.

All I know is that this is the place to go if you want to become one with nature. There is exactly one large grocery store in Stornoway and about three mini shops spread across the rest of the island so elaborate sixcourse meals aren’t really on the menu here and planning ahead is key. However, you’ll find lots of egg boxes along the street where you can just pull over and take some in return for a small fee so a lack of protein is not one of the island’s main concerns. Other than that there’s not much left to do but listen to the waves and breathe that fresh sea air while you unplug for a few days.

History

Stepping onto the island is almost like stepping back in time. Overpopulation, industrialization and nature-desecrating block buildings have not reached the Outer Hebrides, making them an oasis for nature and wildlife

lovers. A short drive takes you from Stornoway, the island’s biggest and quite modern town with a whopping 8,000 inhabitants, through 4,000 years of history to the Standing Stones of Callanish, which were erected in Neolithic times and aided in rituals during the Bronze Age. Some of the oldest rocks on earth can be found on this little piece of land.

At small shops and cafés (there are very few of them so maybe bring some tea bags just in case), you will hear people nonchalantly speak Gaelic with each other as the islands have the biggest amount of people still able to speak it in all of Scotland. Efforts are made to keep the language alive and the number of speakers did not decrease in the last decade, which I believe is a beautiful sign of the Scots’ desire to keep their history alive.

Blackhouses

If you’re interested in finding out more about the island’s history and how its inhabitants lived for many years, you may want to visit the fully furnished Arnol Blackhouse on the Isle of Lewis, which shows you inside both a tra-

ditional blackhouse (only vacated 1966) with an open peat fire in the center and the more recent answer to it, the Whitehouse just across the Street. Fun fact: there are virtually no trees on the island so dried peat was the only way to make a fire. Nowadays you may only know the scent from whiskey. Blackhouses are thick-walled dwellings where animals and sometimes multiple generations lived gathered around one fireplace. Thatched roofs made of twigs and heather and overlaid with straw were weighed down with stones. “Communal living” is a key term here as it is hard to imagine how tight the space would have gotten with your pet goats, cattle and even horses, grandma, grandpa and your annoying little siblings sharing one bedroom. To this day, the museum makes sure the fire never goes out. As you can imagine, the island wasn’t the easiest place to live back in the day and keeping the fire going was absolutely essential. Whitehouses didn’t house animals inside anymore as a new health bill was introduced in the 1900s and forbade this type of

living arrangement. They also contained multiple fire sources throughout the house and chimneys transporting the black peat smoke outside rather than covering the walls, ceilings and lungs in a thick layer of ashes. As a matter of fact, they were named white houses because the interiors were so light and pleasant thanks to wallpapers and windows, which then caused the older houses to be referred to as blackhouses. Before Whitehouses came along they would have been simply called houses. Fascinating, right?

Visit virtualheb.com to take a virtual tour through one of these houses.

Where to stay

Gearrannan Blackhouse Village is as unique an accommodation as it gets. The historic blackhouses are fully modernized inside with all the charm of two hundred years ago and all the heating, plumbing and comfort of modern times. You can either rent an entire cottage for your family or rent a room or even just a bed in the bunkhouse, which has three bedrooms,

two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and seating area. During the summer months, a small café and gift shop as well as a museum depicting traditional island life are open on the premises, too. The houses are for rent in the winter months as well.

The five-house village is *right* next to the ocean with fantastic sunsets over the water, spectacular hiking trails starting right there on your doorstep, sheep greeting you in the morning and an unparalleled serenity all around.

Vigadale Guest House

The best place to stay on Harris might be Vigadale Guest House. The B&B is located close to Tarbert Ferry Terminal, only a short drive from the beaches and in the middle of majestical hiking or cycling areas. It is run with love and the famous regional hospitality that will make you feel right at home. There is a guest living and dining room, a guest kitchen, an outdoor seating area and a wooden hot tub from which you can watch the Northern Lights dance it out on a clear night. The owner’s daughter learns Gaelic at school and if you

ask nicely she might introduce you to a song or two.

There really aren’t that many B&Bs or even hostels spread across the four main islands so it is recommended to book in advance as they get really busy during the summer months and failing to spontaneously find accommodation might result in either a very expensive one or you driving all the way up to Stornoway where proper hotels will have availabilities for you. Alternatively, you can always bring a tent or spend the night in your car. For an honesty fee of £5 a night, you can park in many designated areas right next to the beach.

Check out booking.com and airbnb.com for private accommodations and see hostelscotland.co.uk for shared dorms and bunkhouses.

The Temple Café

This beautiful café is located on Harris, south of the Tarbert ferry terminal and en route to the southern islands like Uist and Barra. It has a changing lunch menu, super fresh and homemade dishes with a lovely view of the

island’s signature scenery. Outdoor seating is perfect for a sunny afternoon while the interior is ideal for cozying up with a mug of hot chocolate. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday and now accepts card payments as well!

Stornoway Black Pudding

While you’re in Stornoway, you might want to try a Scottish delicacy fittingly called ‘Stornoway Black Pudding’, which has been called the best sausage made in the UK by The Guardian. It’s very similar to the German ‘Blutwurst’/ blood sausage and certainly not for everyone but if you can eat a deep fried Mars bar (another one of those weird Scottish delicacies that I actually tried myself and will recommend if you’re crazy enough), you can handle a Stornoway Black Pudding, which, another fun fact, may only be called that if produced on the Western Isles.

Getting there

You can drive to Scotland with your own car and while it’s certainly a spectacular road trip, it does take quite a while and might not be ideal for a one-week vaca-

tion as it includes 2 ferry trips and crosses about 4 countries.

There are flights to Stornoway on Lewis from Manchester and car rental options on site. You can also fly to Edinburgh or Glasgow and explore the beauty of the Scottish Highlands on your way to the island. If you do rent a car on the mainland, make sure to gas up before going on the ferry as Hebridean gas stations are spread out and often more expensive. Ferries leave from Uig on the Isle of Skye (to Tarbert, Harris) and Ullapool in the north of the mainland (to Stornoway, Lewis). You can also get a ferry from Oban, which takes about 4 hours and will take you to beautiful Barra, the southernmost island of the Outer Hebrides. From there, you can take another ferry up to South Uist, drive to North Uist and hop on another quick ferry from North Uist to south Harris. There are special island hopping tariffs so check that out before booking each ticket separately.

P.S. I’ve already booked my next trip to the Hebs and I can just smell the peat fires whenever I think of it!

7th MSC hosts 21st TSC Black History Month fashion show

The 7th Mission Support Command hosted the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Black History Month Observance by holding a fashion show at Daenner Chapel, Daenner Kaserne, Feb. 22.

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling on the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the toooften neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

This year’s Black History Month theme is “African American and the Arts.” This theme resonated with Master Sgt. Shatekia Mitchell, equal opportunity advisor, 7th Mission Support Command, while she was contemplating how to highlight Black History Month and its significance.

“This month means a lot to me,” said Mitchell. “It’s a time where I’m reminded of many sacrifices that were made before me so that I might have opportunities that were once unavailable to me. Diversity within the military allows every voice to be heard. These differences allow opportunities to learn from one another, to obtain a better understanding of the men and women who make up our armed forces.”

7th MSC conducted a fashion show, highlighting fashion and its impact within the African American community.

“The fashion show not only highlights fashion based on different eras, such as the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s but it also highlights different cultural pieces from Nigeria and other African cultures,” said Mitchell. “Furthermore, our models were also able to represent people who have made a difference within the African American community such as those in sports, music, and politics.”

According to Mitchell, fashion within the African American community serves as a dynamic expression of one’s self, weaving together heritage and contemporary trends. Through fashion, individuals not only showcase their personal history, but also challenge stereotypes, fostering unity and pride.

“Fashion became a way of representation, expression, a sense of identity and empowerment within African-American culture,” said Mitchell. “Fashion to me is a way to express yourself without explanation. It is a sense of individuality and gives you the freedom to show who you are irrespective of the opinions of others.”

86th MXG performs testing on electronic jacking, leveling system

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Eve Daugherty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Maintenance Group teamed up with multiple agencies to conduct a performance evaluation of an electronic jacking and leveling system for C-130J Super Hercules aircraft at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 22.

Lifting a C-130J demands more manpower and time than almost any other task in the MXG, requiring seven individuals working for eight hours to complete a lift.

The current system is based on methods developed in the 1960s, using sledgehammers and hanging weights to level an object. Multiple points of failure can exist within

a manual system and it restricts users from lifting aircraft on an unleveled surface, said Wesley Simmons, Hercules Innovation Lab chief of innovation.

“Every day we solve problems, look for resources to better equip our Airmen, or look to adopt technologies that will improve the way we accomplish our mission,” Simmons said.

The team of 86th MXG Airmen, Air Force Material Command, Tesseract, Hercules Innovation Lab and EJALS manufacturers collected data while lifting a C-130J using the EJALS to evaluate if the system is suitable for use on military aircraft.

If the newly tested jacking system is approved, it could allow for just one Airmen to safely lift

a C-130J in only two hours. This would reduce the manpower required for this task by 86 percent.

The EJALS is an electrically powered system currently used for civilian aircraft maintenance that utilizes laser leveling technology to lift aircraft, even while on unlevel surfaces.

“This is a huge step forward for the maintenance community,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Jason Lanehart, 86th Maintenance Squadron maintenance flight chief. “Our guys love them. They work really well and they’re very efficient.”

In addition to maximizing efficiency, the 86th MXG is proud to forge the path for gaining a better

understanding of the procedures to get new ideas approved for use within the group, said Lanehart.

"When we took the first steps into this project there was a huge disconnect from understanding how to introduce new equipment and technology,” Lanehart said. “Once we found the technology, we needed to pause to make sure we went through the appropriate channels before we went live and put it to use.”

The collaboration for approval of the EJALS testing demonstration has taken more than a year, but the process has brought clarity to members of the 86th MXG on how to bring meaningful change to tactics and procedures.

“From my experience, our

Airmen are unaware of all the resources they have available to them,” said Simmons. “By expending effort to clearly understand the process and critical causes of breakdowns, our Airmen can focus their efforts to eliminate a problem.”

The final approval will be determined by the Air Force. If the EJALS is approved for use with military aircraft, developing guidelines and procedures for Airmen to use Air Force-wide will follow, said Lanehart.

“Innovation is possible,” said Lanehart. “If you find something that’s really worth it, you have to be ready to build in the continuity to keep the project going, it does not always happen as fast as we would like, but it is possible.”

ABC IN KMC: International Women’s Day

March 8 has been known as International Women’s Day around the world. In some countries it is observed as a public holiday such as in Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakstan, Poland, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. In Germany, it is only an official holiday in the states of Berlin and MecklenburgVorpommern with stores and official offices closed. It is, however, generally observed as a day to honor and acknowledge women and their achievements in promoting equality, women’s voting rights and emancipation. Did you know that a German woman sparked a flame which led to the implementation of an international day to honor women?

International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s, during a time of great turbulence and expansion in the industrial world. By 1908 critical debate occurred among women, their oppression and inequality spurred them to speak up and campaign for change. In the same year, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights.

A year later and in accordance with a declaration of the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman’s Day was observed across the United States on Feb. 28. In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen with Clara Zetkin, the leader of the Women’s Office for

the Social Democratic Party in Germany, who proposed the idea of an international day for all women. The conference was attended by one hundred women from 17 countries, representing unions and political parties, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. Zetkin’s proposal was met with unanimous approval, and the first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

On the eve of World War I in 1914, campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day Feb. 23, and after further discussions, it was agreed to annually observe the day on March 8, which has been the global date for International Women’s Day ever since.

In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women’s solidarity. In London there was a march from Bow to Trafalgar Square in support of women’s suffrage on March 8, 1914, where Sylvia Pankhurst was arrested on her way to speak at Trafalgar Square.

In 1917 Russian women began a strike for “Bread and Peace” in response to the death of over two million Russian soldiers in World War I. Opposed by political leaders, the women continued to strike until four days later the Tzar was forced to abdicate, and the government granted women the right to vote.

New Zealand was the first country in the world to allow women to vote as early as 1893. Mary Shipley was the first female prime minister of New Zealand from 1997 to 1999. Women’s suffrage followed in Germany and Great Britain in 1918, and the United States in 1920. On July 20, 1960, Sirimawo Bandaranaike became the world’s first female prime minister in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). Margaret Thatcher served as Britain’s first female Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 and Angela Merkel was Germany’s first female chancellor from 2006 to 2021.

International Women’s Day was marked for the first time by the United Nations in 1975 and the first annual theme “Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future” was announced in 1996, with varying topics following each year.

OHA survey empowers KMC service members

An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate.

The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses.

Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.

KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates.

The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses.

Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members.

To take the 2024 OHA and Utility survey, please visit https://www.travel.dod.mil/Allowances/ Overseas-Housing-Allowance/OHA-DataCollection-Surveys/

mainstream activity, the world had moved on, and feminism wasn’t a popular topic. Following a year of planning and collaborative conversations, the www.internationalwomensday.com platform was launched with the specific purpose of re-energizing the day and inviting mass participation — a focus which continues to this day — by celebrating and making visible the achievements of women, while continuing the call for accelerating gender parity. 2011 saw the 100-year anniversary of International Women’s Day — with the first IWD event held in 1911.

In the United States, former President Barack Obama proclaimed March to be “Women’s History Month” in 2011, calling Americans to mark IWD by reflecting on “the extraordinary accomplishments of women” in shaping the country’s history. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, as pilots, scientists and world leaders, one could think that women have gained true equality.

The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men, an estimated 12 million teenage girls are forced into marriage a year worldwide. Paramount progress has been made in the last 100 years, but there are still many obstacles to tackle in the future.

The IWD 2024 campaign theme is “Inspire Inclusion,” inviting others to understand and value women’s inclusion and forging a better world, this again leads to a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment.

Land of a thousand lakes?

It’s actually kind of charming that Müritz National Park seems a little fuzzy when it comes to lake counting: Usually, German counting is a precise thing. Numbers don’t do this place justice, anyway. And, who knows? There may just be a thousand lakes in the park, depending on your definition of lake. What is certain is that there are over 100 large lakes, and that the Müritz Lake is massive – the largest lake located entirely inside German borders, and the second largest German lake after Lake Konstanz.

It’s also certain that this is a park that’s made for water lovers. If you’re into fishing (and if you have your fishing license, which is generally pretty easy to obtain), Müritz National Park has several excellent options. You can fish near the park entrance at Waren, a decent-sized town, or you can get into the backcountry pretty quickly.

Kayak trips are also possible, and are highly enjoyable. The park doesn’t just contain lakes. There are creeks, rivers, swamps, and ponds, and most are connected. In fact, the park offers two distinct “water hiking” itineraries, which are awesome. They run for miles through the park, and include official campgrounds where boaters can stop for overnight stays.

During warmer months, swimming is also a great option at the Müritz National Park. There are dozens of official swim-

ming spots, which makes this a cool place to be if the summer gets particularly warm.

Müritzeum — an aquarium for all ages

Speaking of water, the park has one of the best visitor centers in all of Germany, which is also known as the Müritzeum. This aquarium contains multiple water displays, which house more than 50 species of fish and other aquatic creatures. Unlike many coastal aquariums, the Müritzeum is dedicated exclusively to freshwater life. Everything you see there is present in the national park, which makes your visit that much richer.

The Müritzeum also has a great restaurant (the Alt Waren), a fascinating garden, and a wonderful interactive natural history exhibition. Admission prices are €14 for adults and €7 for kids ages 4-16. Family passes are also available.

Peaceful Waren

If you’re visiting the park, the town of Waren is a solid choice for a place to stay. It’s clean, has a beautiful harbor, is filled with shops and restaurants, and has the vibe of an American lake resort town, especially during the summer.

Waren is also a great base for making

a trip to northeast Germany. Waren is only 2 hours drive from both Jasmund National Park and Lower Oder Valley National Park, and is connected by high-speed rail to Berlin and Rostock, which sits on the Baltic Sea. Boat travel is obviously an option from Waren, too: Visitors can take day trips across Müritz Lake to small, cute towns like Röbel.

Getting to Müritz National Park

By car, Müritz National Park is 8 hours from Kaiserslautern or Stuttgart, and 7 hours from Wiesbaden. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train itineraries to Waren.
