Strength in numbers: Group physical therapy Story and photos by Airman Tabatha Chapman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Sometimes after a sprain or strained muscle, an ice pack isn’t enough to fix the damage. Group physical therapy may be a useful tool to a speedy recovery. Group physical therapy classes allow treatment for more patients deemed qualified within the same time frame, thus decreasing patient wait time for appointments while still providing high-quality care. “One of the main benefits is the access to care,” said Airman 1st Class Kevon Brandon, a physical therapist technician at the 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron. “It can be difficult to get appointments sometimes due to the large number of people on Ramstein and the necessity for regular physical therapy. People are placed in group classes, but it is the skills that physical therapists can teach them that they use to better themselves during their own time as well, Brandon said. High knees, leg stretches and the use of foam rollers are exercises that are typically practiced during classes. All the exercises have some type of modification so that each patient can get maximum participation within their limits. It was discovered by the physical therapists that many military members who have chronic pain would benefit from formal guidance on how to be active and continue staying

active, all while learning how to manage their symptoms. “We’ll identify patients who we feel would benefit from a group setting and then bring them in to try it out,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Spencer Carrier, 86th OMRS physical therapist. “Sometimes we find that it can be more beneficial versus one on one.”

Morale is an added perk to group physical therapy classes, Brandon said. There’s a sense of camaraderie and everyone builds a bond as they work together to improve their conditions. The additional support and community is valuable to service members during their time at physical therapy. “It’s almost like a brother-and-

sister-in-arms kind of thing,” said Brandon. “’Hey, your back hurts? My back hurts too!’” If interested in group physical therapy, contact your primary care manager to get a referral for physical therapy. Additionally, call for an appointment to be evaluated by a physical therapist through the medical

JOB FAIR from Page 1 hard copies of their resumes to the job fair so they can be given directly to hiring officials that are considering using the direct hire authority. “This new program reduces the job competition pool because it allows spouses to only compete with other spouses versus other eligible candidates such as reassignments and transfers,” said Kathryn Iapichino, 86th Force Support Squadron chief of U.S. staffing. “This means spouses have a greater likelihood of being selected for Federal employment while overseas.”

Initial employment appointment under DHA will not exceed two years and can be extended in two-year increments for no more than a total of six years. The appointments will end when the service member transfers back to the U.S. or to another overseas assignment. They may also end due to divorce, death of the sponsor or upon the sponsor’s retirement or separation from active duty. “The goal of the DHA is to increase employment opportunities for spouses in the Ramstein KMC area and provide experiences that will lead to continuous Federal employment for future

military spouses overseas,” Iapichino said. Military Spouse Preference is not impacted by employment through a DHA position. “This gives spouses the opportunity to try out different jobs while not losing their spousal preference and gives them an in when looking for a permanent position,” said Larry Ray, 86th FSS civilian personnel officer. The “Open Continuous” jobs that can be found on USA Jobs include secretary, general engineer, contract specialist, housing manager, human resources specialist, supervisory youth programs specialist, budget

analyst, security specialist and sustainment services specialist positions under the DHA, but are not limited to these jobs. Spouses interested in applying for civil service employment can

visit the Air Force Civilian Service site to search for jobs being filled using the direct-hire authority process. Additionally, local civilian personnel offices can provide assistance and information.

STATE OF THE ART: Nordrhein-Westfalen by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz. You may already be familiar with your immediate vicinity, but there is much more to explore and experience at your “home away from home”. State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was established May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The states of RheinlandPfalz, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Hessen, Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, the City States of Bremen, Hamburg as well as West Berlin, in its geographically isolated location, belonged to the federal republic. The small state of Saarland remained under French government until 1957. The foundation of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) followed Oct. 7, 1949, including the states of Brandenburg, Thüringen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Sachsen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and East Berlin as its capital. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both countries were reunited in 1990 to make up the

current nation with 16 individual “Bundesländer” and Berlin again became the capital. Berlin is the seat of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) and the representative body of the states (Bundesrat). Olaf Scholz of the majority Social Democratic Party (SPD) is the elected Federal Chancellor. According to a 2022 census, Germany’s population has increased to 84 million inhabitants. This includes about one million Ukrainian refugees, making up the largest group of foreigners in the country, followed by Syrians with 750,000. This month we will travel to our northern neighbor state NordrheinWestfalen to explore facts and figures as well as interesting spots. The land of density and diversity Nordrhein-Westfalen is the fourth largest state with 34,100 square kilometers, but has the highest population with 18 million inhabitants. It is therefore the most densely populated state with 525 people per square kilometer. It borders the Province Liege in Belgium with a partial German speaking population and The Netherlands in the West. The metropolitan region “Rhein-Ruhr” in the center of the state, consisting of the cities of Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, Bochum and others, basically one merging into the other, alone consists of 10 million inhabitants and is also considered to be the most densely populated area in central Europe.

A media port, fashion, Killepitsch and Japanese culture Düsseldorf, the second largest city with a population of 619,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the state. The Landtag is situated along the banks of the Rhein River and Hendrik Wüst of the Christian Democratic Party is the Minister President, who has been in office since October 2021. The city is especially famous for being the fashion metropolis and modern art center of Germany. The famous Königsallee, commonly called “Kö” boasts luxurious shops with every designer label you can imagine. Situated on the Rhein River, it is also one of the largest domestic ports in the country. As the busy cargo port at the “elbow” became too small in the late 1980s, a new port was built in Neuss, west of the city. Over the years the area has been transformed into a bustling business center, some companies situated in old brick warehouses, others in modern state of the art buildings. In combination with rather futuristic edifices, this mixture gives Düsseldorf a special bizarre skyline next to the 43 meter high “Rheinturm,” a television tower with a revolving restaurant and a fantastic view. Many media related companies, IT, insurance business and prestigious hotels have found a home in the Medienhafen. See https://medienhafen.de A stroll from the Medienhafen past the Landtag will lead you along the “Rheinuferpromende” with a

great view of the river boats and directly to the “Altstadt.” The quaint medieval buildings, the town hall and market square, as well as the renowned “längste Theke der Welt” (longest bar in the world), will inspire you to rest for a while. It is not in one pub, but a total microcosm consisting of more than 260 pubs, bars and restaurants, where you can try a glass of the famous “Altbier,” only brewed in Düsseldorf, or a sip of “Killepitsch” a herb liquor. https://www.duesseldorf-tourismus. de/erleben/sehenswertes/altstadt The Hofgarten is a large park with fountains and ponds, art and a great place to relax, which has also become home to hundreds of Canadian geese, near the Shadow Shopping District. Another exciting activity is a river boat ride to Kaiserswerth, located at the northern end of the city. Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa I, who once resided in Kaiserslautern, built a Kaiserpfalz (emperor’s residence) to charge toll from the ships. You can also visit Flingern, a swinging city section with restaurants and cozy cafés, unique small shops, or Oberkassel across the river to view prestigious villas aligned along the banks, where you can also swim with sheep who are typically grazing nearby. Düsseldorf is also home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan. In the 1990s a number of companies settled there, such as computer and printer producers. Now 20,000 Japanese reside in the city

and celebrate an astonishing cherry blossom festival with miraculous fireworks every May. See, www.japantagduesseldorf-nrw.de/en The tallest building in the world, Eau de Cologne and chocolate Köln, or Cologne, is the largest city in Nordrhein-Westfalen just south of the capital. The city has just over one million inhabitants, with the most famous building being the “Kölner Dom” (cathedral). It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. The impressive structure is 157 meters high (515 feet) and construction started in August 1248. Due to partial destruction stemming from wars and a lack of funds, it wasn’t completed until 1880 and is currently again under repair. The outside walls are rather dark and uninspiring, but the stained-glass windows are world famous and breath-taking when the sun shines through. It was the tallest building in the world, until 1884 when the Empire State building was completed. As many other cities, Köln also has an interesting historic district or “Altstadt,” where you can enjoy a sip of the famous “Kölsch” beer, “Ähzezupp” (pea soup) or “Rievkoche” (potato cakes). Köln also hosts the oldest city hall in Germany, construction started in 1407 on the hall, which lies in the heart of old

town. Another famous place to visit is the “4711 Cologne House,” which is the most fragrant house in Köln and located in Glockengasse No. 4. It is the birthplace of the most famous brand of Eau de Cologne and the house number refers to its designation during the French occupation in the 18th century. The same formula has been used since 1792. Schildergasse is said to be the busiest shopping street in Europe with its origins dating back to Roman times. It is a shoppers delight and draws up to 15,000 visitors per hour. The city also boasts a Botanical Garden, which invites you to a stroll with more than 10,000 species of plants. A walk along the banks of the Rhein can be inspiring, enjoy a Rhein River Cruise or a cable car ride with a spectacular view of the cathedral and Gross St. Martin (church) as well as the Hohenzollern Bridge. It was constructed in 1911 and rebuilt after its destruction during World War II. Sweet tooths should definitely not miss out on the Chocolate Museum. Köln, as well as Düsseldorf, are also well known for their Karneval culture (Fasching) and have parades on Rose Monday. www.koeln.de Ruhrpott and the working class Moving north-east and into the center of the state, we’ll hit upon the metropolitan area “RheinRuhr,” commonly referred to as the “Ruhrpott,” based on its overall mining and iron and steel working character. While coal was mined as

early as the 13th century, industrialization in the 1800s brought about an economic upswing and hundreds of thousands of workers from around Germany came to the area to seek their fortunes. The population of some towns literally exploded in the following years. The town of Bochum had 2,200 inhabitants in 1800, 65,000 in 1900 and 117,000 in 1905, with a population of 365,000 today. Many of the cities grew so rapidly in population and size that they merged into one “mega city” such as Bochum, Bottrop, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Hagen, Hamm, Herne, Mühlheim an der Ruhr and Oberhausen. Due to a structural change, many of the mines were closed in the 1930s with high unemployment rates for decades. In December 2018 the very last mine in Bottrop had to cease operations. This region has been known as the hub of the working-class society for over a century, but in the meantime, the heavy vehicle industry, businesses relating to electronics, pharmaceutical plants, international commerce and technological centers have brought employment and hopes of a brighter future. The Ruhrtal (valley) has been renaturalized into a natural recreation area today. Each of the above-mentioned cities has special places to visit, but the main subway station under the train station in Essen displays a creepy impression of life underground in a coal mine with spooky blue illumina-

tion and heavy mining equipment, a surreal experience. Wuppertal has a monorail, which was opened in 1901, and has only experienced two minor accidents, one with an elephant falling into the Wupper River underneath. Quaint places versus steel works In contrast to the great urban areas, there are also some very picturesque towns in the region with quaint or even medieval character that are worth a visit. Monschau, which is located toward the south in the Eifel region is a real treasure chest. More than 330 historically protected buildings can be found in the small town with 12,000 inhabitants, which also boasts a castle towering high above. Winterberg in the Sauerland region offers typical semi-timbered houses and facades made of slate. During the winter a ski lift will take you to the slopes and to St. Georg Schanze (ski jump) or you can go on long hikes. Another gem is the city of Münster with the Prinzipialmarkt having been a market square since the 15th century. Its gabled houses, the historic town hall, the romantic cathedral and the Erbdrostenhof are always worth a visit. The city is also very flat, making it an eldorado for bikers and it is said that because of the many university students there are more bikes than cars on the road. Once a mighty Hanseatic city, Soest has a lot of historical flair and the oldest church, the St. Patrokli

Cathedral is an ideal Romanic edifice next to St. Maria with its Gothic twin towers. Let’s go west Traveling to the west, the landscape has a more rural atmosphere and farmland, dairy cows and horse pastures become a frequent sight. Red or yellow brick houses are a reminiscent of changing Dutch and German relationships over the centuries. Many people in the area speak Dutch, which is the second language there. As the most western large city (100,000+) in Germany, Aachen is famous for its Carolingian architecture, in particular the cathedral. It was classified as the first German UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site in 1978. The original name of the city is unknown, but during the reign of Charlemagne, who made the city into his official cultural and political seat, it was known as Aix-la-Chapelle. Close to the border to The Netherlands the city has a strong Dutch influence and claims to be the second oldest city in Germany after Trier, based on Celtic and Roman findings. Visit: www.aachen.de Four hundred thousand years of humanity To end our roundtrip of the state, our last stop is just east of Düsseldorf, between Mettmann and Erkrath in Neandertal. In 1856 remains of a human were found that gave the valley its name and made it famous. The oldest known Neanderthals lived

about 400,000 years ago, settled in Europe, the Near East, Central Asia and Western Siberia as well as in this tranquil valley. As an extinct species or subspecies of archaic humans, it is unclear what exactly led to their distinction about 40,000 years ago. New studies have shown that the people were highly sophisticated, built stone tools, cave hearths and could weave simple clothing. Neanderthalers were rather small, males up to five feet and females normally around four. Recent studies also suggest that every human carries one to two percent Neanderthal genes in them. The Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann offers a virtual tour of four million years of history and various interesting artifacts. https://www. neanderthal.de/en Land of new opportunity and cultural diversity Nordrhein-Westfalen calls itself the land of new opportunity and cultural diversity. It offers large urban industrial areas as well as grassy plains, opportunities to hike and bike in the Teutoberger Mountain range, the Sauerland or northern Eifel region. There are rivers and lakes to explore and hard-working people of at least 150 different nations to meet. An estimated 5,000-7,000 of them are U.S. citizens working for German or international businesses or research centers. The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz welcomed its newest employees with a Team Member Orientation on Feb. 15-16. The U.S. Army Installation Management Command Team Member Orientation program, which was put on hold for over 18 months during the COVID-19 pandemic, was revitalized in September 2021 with significant improvements to make sure participants get the most out of it. Since then, more than 400 employees have benefitted from the program. “Our acculturation program is recognized as a ’best practice’ for IMCOM, and especially for the European Theatre,” said Dr. Richard Calnon, USAG-RheinlandPfalz Human Resources director. The program itself is modeled after other successful new employee orientation programs like those offered to newcomers at USAG Hawaii, USAG Stuttgart, and IMCOM Headquarters. “We identified what worked well for others and then shaped our own TMO program focused on Rheinland-Pfalz’s unique installations and geographical dispersion,” Calnon added. Rheinland-Pfalz’s TMO is designed to help new employees understand the overall garrison mission and its organizational structure by providing an over-

view of each directorate and staff agency and describing how their missions are nested into and compliment the garrison mission. “The program started off as a standard briefing being conducted in one centralized location with our garrison leadership and directors briefing from power points to our new team members,” said Calnon. “Over time, it has expanded to include a traveling bus tour of our major installations while our directors conduct in-person briefings that showcase their mission and responsibilities to our new team members at the location where they actually work.” The two-day TMO starts with a command overview at Rhine Ordnance Barracks where Col. Reid Furman, USAG RheinlandPfalz commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen J. LaRocque, welcome all the new team members and provide an oversight of the garrison capabilities and various roles supporting the warfighter. “We want to welcome and orient the new team members to their workplace and surrounding areas. Our garrison footprint is 100 miles wide and located in 31 sites within 10 cities and towns, not to mention sites in Romania and Bulgaria! We understand that this is a lot to digest for our newcomers and so it’s important for us, the command team, to communicate how important each team member is to the success of this garrison and the readi-

ness of the Army. We want TMO to help team members understand how their work directly impacts our mission as the Army’s premier Strategic Readiness Platform overseas,” said Command Sgt. Maj. LaRocque. “We are grateful that they made the choice to work for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. Plus, the commander and I love getting the opportunity to meet the new employees face-to-face.” After the in-brief at ROB, participants get on the bus, following the CSM’s rule — “don’t sit next to someone you already know” — his way of lightheartedly encouraging people to meet other new employees and form connections — and they head to Kleber Kaserne for an introduction to the Directorate of Human Resources and the Religious Services Office at the Central Processing building. Then, it’s off to Sembach installation for a briefing with the Directorate of Emergency Services. The last destination of the morning is Pulaski Barracks in Vogelweh where the new team members receive a welcome from the Directorate of Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation. After a scheduled lunch break at one of the world-class eateries on Pulaski, the group travels to Baumholder Military Community for a bus tour led by Mr. Jae Kim, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz deputy garrison manager, who provides information on Baumholder’s history, its facilities and future plans for growth/modernization (he

The day concludes with a tour of Smith Barracks on Baumholder, where the group receives a briefing from the Directorate of Public Works and the Directorate of Plans, Training Mobilization and Security. On the second day of TMO, new team members meet at Kleber Kaserne for a variety of trainings intended to set the foundation on employee and supervisor expectations, emphasizing that there is always someone to talk to in the garrison — to address any concerns an employee might have. The participants receive briefings covering Equal Employment Opportunity, Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention Program and the Army Substance Abuse Program/Suicide Awareness Program. “Our primary focus on day two is to ensure that all new employees understand all of the prevention, education, and training programs that the garrison offers and how

to seek assistance in any of these areas,” said Calnon. “After arriving last year, I was completely impressed with the time, energy, and detail the leadership team and the members of the Garrison took in welcoming its newly hired civilian employees during TMO. This is my 5th assignment in nearly 13 years as a GS employee and I have never seen any organization take such an interest with its civilian workforce. This truly makes me feel that I’m part of a team that cares about its members and motivates me to do more as a team member within the Garrison,” said Ronald Gonzales, EEO Specialist, who joined USAGRP in July and now briefs the EEO portion of TMO. “I’m proud to be part of this program.” The final portion of the program is an initial Operation Excellence Training, which focuses on customer service, our core garrison mission of serving others. “Operation Excellence Training is an integral part of the onboarding

program, it gives our newest team members an idea of the culture we intend to foster and maintain within this garrison, and the Army,” said Eloy Campos, Training Instructor, Workforce Development Team, DHR/ DHMWR. “This is the framework for the way we do business not only with external customers, but with our internal customers, our IMCOM professionals! Our number one and most important asset, our people!” USAG-RP TMOs are held on the third Wednesday and Thursday of each month. The next TMO is on March 15-16. Small steps move mountains for first sergeant Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Kaitlyn Oiler 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Taking care of others can be very rewarding, but it also takes a lot of work. U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Daniel Moffett, 86th Comptroller Squadron and Wing Staff Agency first sergeant, sets the reset button for himself by waking up at 3:30 a.m. every morning and working out. He says this energizes him throughout the day. This, in addition to regular resiliency events, keep Moffett in top shape to support others. Moffett joined the Air Force almost 20 years ago as a vehicle operations logistics Airman, now known as ground transportation. Early in his career, Moffett was inspired by his wingman, Staff Sgt. Jason Icmat, a former vehicle operations logistics Airman who is now retired. Moffett recalls one time in particular as an Airman when he and his peers were given a task they didn’t find favorable. "Icmat would always help us

leadership style deeply resonated with him and helped shape him as the Airman he is today. “He strengthened my foundation in the Air Force as an

Airman,” said Moffett. “His lessons taught me to treat everyone equally, regardless of their rank. This is a very important attribute for a first sergeant to have.” Moffett views himself as a noncommissioned officer first. He aims to be a part of the training and development of Airmen. “It is all about taking care of Airmen, because one day that Airman is going to be a first sergeant,” said Moffett. “I want to show them what the epitome of a senior noncommissioned officer should look like.” Moffett has described his position as one that impacts people through support and professional development. “I love taking care of Airmen. I love ‘Big A.’ I want to be there for Airmen on their best day and worst day,” Moffett said. “I am truly blessed to be able to serve in the Air Force.” Moffett said that serving in the Air Force all comes back to one thing, the Air Force Core Values. “Some of us come into the military knowing them and some of us learn them at basic military training,” said Moffett. “Our core values guide us to know who we are as a service.”

Stoltenberg was speaking at a meeting of the B9 NATO Allies (Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia) in Warsaw, co-hosted by Polish President Andrzej Duda and Slovak President Zuzana Caputová. The Secretary General thanked U.S. President Joe Biden for his “outstanding leadership” and for the United States’ “ironclad commitment” to the security of Europe. He underscored NATO’s “steadfast support” to Ukraine, as demonstrated by President Biden’s recent visit to Kyiv. The Secretary General reiterated the urgent need to “sustain and step up our support for Ukraine” and to give them “what they need to prevail.” “NATO Allies have never been more united,” Mr Stoltenberg said, “we will protect and defend every inch of Allied territory, based on our Article 5 commitment to defend each other.” He highlighted Russia’s “pattern of aggression over many years,” stating “we don’t know when the war will end, but when it does, we need to ensure that history does not repeat itself.” “We cannot allow Russia to continue to chip away at European security. We must break the cycle of Russian aggression,” the Secretary General said.

Opinion: Why a healthy heart matters at any age by Dr. Jesse Monestersky Defense Centers for Public HealthAberdeen February is National Heart Health Month or American Heart Month, which is endorsed by the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally, the second week of every February is Heart Failure Awareness Week, sponsored by the Heart Failure Society of America. Celebrating National Heart Health Month is consistent with the core mission of the Defense Centers for Public Health– Aberdeen, formerly known as the Army Public Health Center. A healthy and fit service member is a deployable and combat-ready service member. Heart disease and heart failure are not compatible with continued active-duty service. disease affects every age group, not just older adults. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women and men. The CDC reports that almost 700,000 Americans worldwide died from heart disease in 2020. Many cases are preventable; almost 50 percent of Americans have at least one of the three leading risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. Heart failure is a specific form of heart disease. At this point the heart muscle cannot pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs in your body. Though it can be medically managed, the CDC reports more than six million Americans are living with heart failure and has linked heart failure to more than 300,000 deaths in one year. While heart failure is one of the most common diagnoses in hospital patients aged 65 and above, it also affects children, young adults and the middle-aged. Like heart disease and heart attacks, heart failure is largely preventable by adopting a healthier lifestyle and following your healthcare provider’s recommendations. You can reduce your risk Lifestyle changes and medical management can greatly reduce the risks of developing - and dying from – heart disease. In fact, developing healthier habits at the earliest age possible can improve your odds of better heart health later in life. You can reduce your risk of developing or dying from heart disease by preventing or improving the following: • Diabetes • Overweight and obesity • Unhealthy diet

• Physical inactivity • Excessive alcohol use • Cardiovascular fitness The Department of Defense recognizes the importance of cardiovascular fitness as a key measure of heart health by mandating measurable standards in policy, doctrine, procedures and equipment. For example, most of a Soldier’s fitness centers around the health of their heart and cardiovascular system. The Army Combat Fitness Test measures cardiovascular and cardiac fitness. Heart health is important for you and your family The importance of heart health also extends to the family. Knowing that the family is healthy allows our service members to deploy on missions in defense of our nation with less worry about their families back home. We should not only focus on our own cardiovascular health but promote heart health in our families and friends as well. This is a good time to consider what we can personally do to prevent heart disease. Look at your own habits and those of family members and see how many of these suggested actions you can take to improve heart health: • Maintain a healthy body weight by selecting healthy foods and snacks and actively participating in regular exercise. • Maintain a normal cholesterol level through diet, medication or both. • Monitor and maintain a healthy blood pressure. • Improve your sleeping habits to ensure 7–8 hours of quality sleep.

Resources The military family has ready access to expert healthcare providers who are available to answer individual questions and to help maintain heart health. On our military installations, we have access to free fitness centers, Army/ Armed Forces Wellness Centers, fitness coaches, dietitians, smoking cessation program counselors, health educators, and a full range of other health professionals. Additional information and tools are available from these public health organizations: 1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention • Heart disease tools and resources for healthcare professionals, for public health professionals and for individuals and patients • Heart failure information: statistics, risk factors, symptoms and treatment 2. The American Heart Association has many resources including assorted health topics, tools to help avoid early death and disability from heart disease, and resources for health professionals. 3. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health lists coronary artery disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, and diabetes as the causes of heart failure. Please join DCPH-A in celebrating both the 59th annual American Heart Month and 23rd annual Heart Failure Awareness Week and in promoting heart health. Evaluate your lifestyle habits and those of all your family members to make sure you are doing all you can to stay heart healthy. Service members should avoid foods with poppy seeds by Jim Garamone Department of Defense News Service members may want to hold off ordering that “everything” bagel. It's not an urban legend: Eating poppy seeds can cause diners to test positive for codeine on a urinalysis, Defense Department officials said in a memo released yesterday. “Recent data suggests certain poppy seeds varieties may have higher codeine contamination than previously reported,” said Gilbert R. Cisneros Jr., the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. “Consumption of poppy seed products could cause a codeine-positive urinalysis result and undermine the department’s ability to identify illicit drug use.” This comes as something of a surprise for the department. At one point, some meals ready-toeat contained lemon poppy seed cake, and dining facilities often served poppy seed salad dressing. Officials became aware of the problem in 2022 and have worked to review the “limited scientific studies and also contracted with an independent laboratory to have the codeine and morphine contamination of multiple poppy seed brands analyzed,” officials said. “The analysis and other recently published studies were the catalyst for the warning regarding poppy seeds.” The poppy seed memo calls on the Army, Navy and Air Force to notify service members “to avoid consumption of all poppy seeds, including food products

and baked goods containing poppy seeds.” Bagels, rolls, salads and salad dressing are the most common foods with poppy seeds, but there are many other foods where poppy seeds are used as spice. Many foods contain poppy seeds in the Balkans, the Middle East, and central and eastern Europe. It’s possible that some service

members have been disciplined or discharged for “innocent or unknown ingestion” of poppy seeds, an official said. “We are currently working that analysis and focusing on codeine-only positive tests from fiscal year 2019 to present,” the official continued. “This timeline is based on currently available information. The

amount of poppy seeds consumed, concentration of codeine detected in urine and time of consumption relative to the drug test are also important factors. As we gather more information, we will reassess

and update, as appropriate.” In his memo, Cisneros said service members should work with their local legal office for any related concerns with urinalysis results.

Perfect landing: Developing skills in landing zone safety trainings

U.S. Air Force Airmen participating in a Landing Zone Safety Officer training program await the landing of a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft landing at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 22. The goal of the program is to ensure Airmen who deploy as LZSOs on short notice are confident in setting up and leading a landing zone.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Braden Crabtree, 86th Operation Support Squadron complex air traffic control watch supervisor (right), observes as Tech. Sgt. Joshua Smith, 86th Operation Support Squadron air traffic controller watch supervisor (left), gives landing information to pilots during a Landing Safety Officer training, at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 22. The LZSO training ensures Airmen are able to run a landing zone efficiently while in deployed locations.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Tabatha Chapman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Are you someone who claps when the plane lands? Pilots usually get all the credit; however, there are those who ensure the landing will be safe far before the aircraft touches the ground. Landing zone safety officers are in charge of surveying landing zones in austere environments, ensuring the appropriate measurements from above, on and below the ground are sent to pilots to inform them of ground conditions prior to landing. The 86th Operations Support Squadron LZSOs have developed a local proficiency program to ensure maximum cost and time efficiency. The program is open to aircraft traffic controllers, airfield managers and radar weather and landing system technicians, providing them an opportunity to become multicapable Airmen. While the program has traditionally been taught at Scott Air Force Base, Ill, opening up the opportunity at Ramstein AB means more overseas Airmen get trained with a reduced cost to the Air Force.

“This program allows us to train and continue to sharpen our skills locally while also gaining the experience needed to ensure that we are ready for real-world applications if called upon,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Vincent Coleman II, 86th OSS, air traffic controller tower watch supervisor. “The intention is to be able to complete the mission with a minimum amount of personnel and resources, while still delivering the desired effects to the respective combatant commander.” In order to maintain proficiency, the program will need to be practiced annually to maintain the strict standards of the competency. LZSO’s are given a huge amount of responsibility and consistent training ensures that everyone is capable of setting up a landing zone no matter the situation. “In my experience the course provides the opportunity for Airmen to not only step outside of their usual scopes, but allow the Air Force to land aircraft almost anywhere in the world,” said Staff Sgt. Hunter Crosby, 86th OSS radar airfield weather systems squadron executive. “It provides a new skill set and helps define what it means to be a multicapable Airman.”

Crucial meeting informs garrison mission partners of current, upcoming construction Col. Reid Furman (center) briefs more than 25 mission partners during the Real Property Planning Board “Council of Colonels,” Feb. 21, at Armstrong’s Club, Vogelweh. The colonel outlined how construction and renovation on barracks, child development centers, motor pools, hangars, housing, and more fit into upcoming budget planning. The RPPB process explains in detail projects affecting mission partners, what funds could be spent and when, and details the current timeline for construction. The mission partners’ input during the council is vital to ensuring a Fiscal Year 25-32 budget of more than $2 billion is executed effectively across the garrison’s 31 sites in Germany, Romania and Bulgaria. Joining Furman are Paul Hossenlopp, deputy to the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander (left), and Command Sgt. Major Stephen LaRocque, garrison command sergeant major and senior enlisted leader (right). travel to quiet, rural places has never been more attractive, Niederhausen makes an excellent choice. You can spend most of your time outside and experience incredible German natural beauty. You can feel like you’ve undertaken a journey without having to travel too far. And, most importantly, you can return home feeling as though you’ve discovered something cool and interesting. Why Niederhausen? Aside from the fact that Niederhausen feels like a secret village — which brings its own sort of thrill — it offers day-trippers many cool benefits. Here’s a short list. 1. Discover Nahe wine country. Niederhausen is a great jumping-off point to discover Nahe River wineries. With a tradition that stretches back two millennia, Nahe valley vintners are just as skilled as their counterparts in the more well-known Rhine and Mosel regions. Visit a winery (or two) and discover something new. And, in ordinary times, there are also wonderful country gasthauses in which you can enjoy lunch with a glass of wine. 2. Mountain biking galore. The hills surrounding Niederhausen are also rich with mountain biking trails. Get a ride in before or after (or both) you visit a winery, to make the visit all the more rewarding. 3. An awesome place to wear out pets and/or children. Hiking opportunities abound in and around Niederhausen. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, make your way across the Nahe and hike 300 meters upward to the Lemberg summit. This is the highest point in the region, and it offers incredible views. The one thing you have to see: Niederhausen Weinwanderweg To truly capture the essence of Niederhausen, follow the short (just over 4 kilometers) loop trail known as the Niederhausen Weinwanderweg. Here, you’ll wander with a purpose through the town and through the vineyards. Vineyard art will greet you along the way. Best of all, you’ll get a rich sense of what a Nahe River wine village feels like — and an ample amount of fresh air. Getting there By car, Niederhausen is an hour from Kaiserslautern, 45 minutes from Wiesbaden and 2.5 hours north of Stuttgart. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.
