U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 86th Maintenance Group and the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron taught Polish air force airmen assigned to the 33rd Air Force Base C-130 Squadron, Poland, how to load aircraft, unload aircraft and build flares at Ramstein Air Base, June 5-8.

The first day of the three-day training course consisted of classroom training on the logistics and step-by-step process of installing chaffs and flares onto a U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, helping the only C-130 avionics squadron in the Polish air force refine their flare loading and unloading procedures.

no electrical surges or signals exist to potentially cause a misfire during installation.

much hotter than the roughly 750 degree Celsius exhaust of a C-130 engine. When infrared missiles seek out the hotter temperature, aircrews deploy the flares to mimic an aircraft in afterburn or the beginning of the engine’s exhaust source and redirect the threat.

“It is essential we learn the U.S. Air Force way of working with flares and chaffs,” said Polish air force Lt. Wiktor Roszak, 33rd AFB C-130 Squadron avionics shop commander. “As the only C-130 avionics team in Poland, getting a different point of view is vital to growing and learning more effective ways of conducting procedures on our C-130s.”

After the classroom training, the Polish avionics team was given hands-on training to learn flare installation on a U.S. Air Force C-130J. The Polish airmen also visited the 86th Munitions Squadron and had the chance to build their own flares.

For the flares, two approaches are possible: pyrotechnic and pyrophoric. Infrared-decoy flares contain pyrotechnic compositions upon ignition of the decoy flare, releasing infrared energy and visible smoke and flames. Pyrophoric flares eject a special pyrophoric material, which ignites when exposed to oxygen, out of an airtight cartridge.

Safety is a top priority while building and dealing with flares. Extensive procedures are used to minimize the risk of injury and ensure the safety of Airmen, explained U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Erik Silva, 435th CRSS aircraft maintenance air advisor.

“Before any work can be done, we have to make sure there is no stray voltage to trigger the flare canisters,” said Silva. “This could lead to a misfire that would shoot a flare directly at the operator [and end in a fatality].”

U.S. Airmen assigned to the 435th CRSS who serve as air advisors assess, train, advise, assist and equip foreign personnel to meet the host nation’s aviation needs in support of U.S. interests.

The 435th Air Ground Operation Wing strives to build and maintain relationships with NATO allies and partners. Training like this increases readiness across NATO to ensure timely and coordinated responses across the European theater.

Ramstein AB Library hosts pride storytime

The Ramstein Chapel is accepting bids for a Ramstein Traditional Service Coordinator from 9 June to 23 June 2023. The contractor shall provide all personnel, labor, materials, and transportation to provide non-personal service in support of the Ramstein Traditional Service located in the KMC. The contractor shall serve the administrative needs of the Ramstein Traditional Service as related to by the Performance Work Statement (PWS). Bachelor Degree in Business Administration or Information Management is preferred but not required: required is a minimum of 2 years of leadership experience, preferably in management or administration. In addition, contractor should be fluent in reading, writing and speaking English and possess all required computer and Microsoft Office proficiencies in order to perform all responsibilities within the statement of work. Bidder is subject to criminal history background checks and must complete a Child Care National Agency Check and Inquiries and Installation Records Check. The Request for Proposal and bid package can be picked up from the North Chapel on weekdays between 0730 and 1630. Packages must be returned no later than 1200 on Friday, 23 June 2023. Bundeswehr liaison assists 21st TSC with European movement

German Bundeswehr Oberfähnrich Christian Weigandt, a liaison officer for the Bundeswehr at the Joint Security Control Center, has been with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command during the month of June, helping the 21st TSC with transportation

movement throughout Germany and Europe.

“The nicest thing working with the U.S. Soldiers has probably been having the ability to see how their military police handle different situations,” said Weigandt. “In my time here I went to the Sembach Correctional Facility and because it is something that the German military does not have, it was an eye-opening experience for sure.”

Weigandt is the only liaison tasked with this duty throughout Germany for Defender Europe 23. Although he is here assisting the 21t TSC through DE23, he is an officer in a Bundeswehr military police unit, acting as a platoon leader, and having about 20 Soldiers under his command.

“Coming here to the 21st he learned so much about the Army’s military police structure, and told

me that he was very impressed with how the MPs work within the U.S. Armed Forces and how many personnel there are,” said Stabsfeldwebel Sandra Bauer, a Bundeswehr liaison with the 21st TSC. “He’s looking forward to having further engagements with them and working on having cross-training events such as schützenschnur (German Armed Forces Badge of Marksmanship)

and hand-to-hand combat near his unit in Nuremberg.”

Soldiers from the Bundeswehr working in conjunction with the 21st TSC helps interoperability and relationships between our countries and militaries. Having positions like this helps spread different types of knowledge, opens doors for cross-training, and even allows for brand new opportunities for both sides.

Germany hosts biggest ever air exercise of NATO forces

Allied air forces began the largest deployment exercise in NATO’s history on June 12. Twenty-five nations are taking part in the twoweek long Air Defender exercise, with around 10,000 personnel and 250 aircraft.

“Air Defender sends a clear message that NATO is ready to defend every inch of Allied territory,” said NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu, adding, “Air Defender is necessary because we live in a more dangerous world. As we face the biggest security crisis in a generation, we stand united to keep our countries and our people safe.”

The exercise, she added, “is a strong display of Germany’s commitment, and capabilities and we thank Germany for hosting this record

Europe and North America, working together in NATO.”

Exercise Air Defender has been planned for several years. Hosted and led by Germany, it will help ensure NATO air forces are trained and ready to respond together. Most of the aircraft will be stationed on several German air bases. Training missions will primarily take place over the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and Southern Germany. The drills are aimed at boosting interoperability and preparedness to protect against aircraft, drones and missiles attacks on cities and critical infrastructure. KMC joins transition to MHS Genesis

The Kaiserslautern Military Community will experience a change to their military health care system as the Military Health Systems Genesis is expected to be implemented in Europe in September. The new electronic health record system is expected to streamline medical care to service members and their families throughout the KMC.

MHS Genesis will serve as a single point of access for service members’ medical records within the military health system, meaning they will no longer need to transfer their medical records during each permanent change of station. Instead, a military member’s new primary care manager will have access via the system.

“MHS Genesis will be the single health record for service members, veterans and their families,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Charles Smith, MHS Genesis site point of contact. “This means that your medical history will stay with you no matter where you go.”

The transition will ensure a multitude of benefits for patients within the KMC, Smith said. This increased accessibility improves

coordination and continuity of care across military treatment facilities. Patients’ medical histories and treatment plans

will become readily available to healthcare providers, resulting in more accurate and efficient care.

“This helps healthcare providers have a comprehensive understanding of your health, enabling them to make better decisions and coordinate care more efficiently,” said Smith. “The new system is smarter, safer, and more effective than ever.”

Moving forward, patients will see the MHS Genesis online portal replace the Tricare Online Patient Portal and secure messaging system.

Patients can get ready for the transition early by creating an account for the MHS Genesis online portal by visiting milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil. Smith said patients could download and save their health records from the Tricare Online Patient Portal, through tricareonline.com, for peace of mind as records are transferred to the new system.

Patients should schedule appointments through Tricare Online during this transition, but appointment availability may be limited due to providers and staff training in the new system.

21st Theater Sustainment Command celebrates Army birthday

In honor of the Army’s 248th trip around the sun, 21st Theater Sustainment Command leadership, Soldiers, Airmen, Department of Defense civilians, and family members celebrated

with a cake-cutting ceremony and special meal at the Clock Tower Cafe on Kleber Kaserne, June 14.

As is tradition throughout the Army, a command or post’s youngest or oldest Soldiers come together to cut the cake to celebrate the Army’s birthday on June 14. This tradition is a remind -

er of the generations who have served to keep America strong and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while bridging that gap from the oldest to youngest Soldiers.

“Every Soldier counts every day in every way from the youngest Soldier in the formation to the oldest,” said Brig.

“I was really excited when they told me I was going to be a part of the ceremony,” said King. “I just so happened to be the youngest at the cafe and got extremely lucky, I’m more than grateful to have gotten the opportunity to have even talked to the General, let alone be in the same ceremony.”

24 nations unite at Military Nursing Exchange to enhance USAFE-AFAFRICA partnerships, readiness

Nurses and medical professionals from 24 allied and partner nations, including the U.S., converged at the U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa 2023 European-African Military Nursing Exchange conference, May 31 – June 2, to share medical knowledge and professional best practices with one another.

This year’s conference included military service members; National Guard and Reserve component medical professionals; and military delegations from South Africa, Madagascar, Zambia, Comoros, Angola, Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Morocco, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Uganda, North Macedonia, Serbia, Germany, Croatia, Albania, Poland, Kosovo, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Netherlands, and Armenia.

The conference featured talks from various international medical professionals, centered on this year’s theme, ‘Military Medics: Optimizing Partnerships and Readiness.’

“This conference was very useful and interesting,” said 2nd Lt. Jasmina Balata-Pajt, nurse and medic for the Bosnia and Herzegovina military.

“Especially the hands-on simulation, where I saw some new equipment that I could use in my country when I go back – thank you for this opportunity!”

The USAFE-AFAFRICA-hosted European and African Military Nursing Exchange, or EAMNE, began in 2014. This year’s event marks the eighth iteration of the conference, bringing U.S. allies and partners from around the world to a single location to collaborate and train together, improving medical readiness.

Several distinguished speakers presented at the conference, including Brig. Gen. Jeannine M. Ryder,

commander of the 59th Medical Wing, San Antonio Military Health System, and Chief Nurse of the U.S. Air Force; and Brig. Gen. Clinton K. Murray, command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa and director of the Defense Health Region Agency Europe.

“It is an honor to be here with you today to speak on the Air Force Nurse Corps, but most importantly to build partnerships, create relationships and understand each other's challenges,” Ryder said during her opening remarks at the event. "This conference enables networking and an ability to have open communication between many nations, bringing a diverse perspective on every problem.

“This diverse group can solve many concerns we tackle every day.

Finally, it allows us to understand that we have the same purpose as nursing services in our respective militaries; we deliver a ready force and develop ready medics while providing safe, quality care to our patients."

Ryder briefed alongside Chief Master Sgt. Chi Swandon, Aerospace Medical Service and Surgical Services career field manager. They both spoke on the state of the U.S. Air Force’s nurse corps and its outlook as it becomes more adaptive and agile.

Murray’s presentation focused on the trends and changes in medical readiness here in Europe and Africa, using a historical lens to explain the kind of opportunities and challenges today’s medics face.

“I think we have a generation of nurses that are amazing,” Murray said in his presentation. “The past

couple of decades of large-scale combat situations in Iraq and Afghanistan have honed the skills and expertise of our medical professionals, more so in ways than the generation before them, making today’s U.S. military nurses some of the best in the world.”

He further described how U.S. medical professionals are increasingly working closer and closer with their allied and partner counterparts. He entreated attendees to progress in their mindsets from integrated, to interoperable, and finally to interchangeable: Interchangeability with our NATO allies and partners, in terms of medical readiness and capabilities, is the ideal state, he concluded.

Apart from the presentations, the conference predominately included various simulation sessions, in which practitioners had opportunities to hone their skills and get hands-on experience on new techniques and technologies. In years past, the conference was held at Ramstein Air Base, to take full advantage of the equipment necessary to demonstrate medical response efforts. This year, with space uncertain at Ramstein, USAFE-AFAFRICA was able to innovatively organize and ensure all the needed equipment could be collated at another location, supported by U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria.

For example, during the simulation sessions on the garrison, allies and partners were able to take full advantage of the U.S. Air Force’s relatively new Tactical Combat Casualty

Care training program. They specifically practiced on the advanced tiers of the program, focused on combat medics and combat paramedics.

“We work closely, hand-in-hand, with our allies and partners,” said Staff Sgt. Kristen Gipson, noncommissioned officer in charge of education and training at the 52nd Fighter Wing, and wing TCCC advisor at Spangdahlem Air Base. “Having that common understanding of how we each react to medical situations and emergencies can help us evaluate our own U.S. Air Force processes, allowing us to incorporate best practices into our own programs and generally making us better as medics.”

Participants during the simulations got to practice on realistic manikins, practicing various medical techniques to manage massive bleeding, airway, circulation and hypothermia injuries. TCCC aims to help close the gap of preventable deaths to the goal of zero by teaching the five life-saving skills, as well as applying those learned skills with hands-on training.

“International cooperation is very important,” said 1st Lt. Marzena Dudaryk, a medic in the Polish Air Force. “Together we are stronger so it’s important to train together and to fight together.

“TCCC, for example, has a lot of different aspects and it’s helping NATO allies and their partners with their own medical programs. This opportunity here to learn about TCCC is a way to exchange our experiences and knowledge, to learn something new and be better as medics.”

The conference touched on a wide variety of medical subjects, from evidence-based practice on collaborative nursing strategies to overcoming patient movement continuum of care challenges. U.S. attendees were given Continuing Education Units,

as the conference was considered a nursing continuing professional development activity, approved by the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps and accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Moreover, for everyone who attended, the event served as a forum for international military medics to share best practices and strengthen interoperability with their allied and partner counterparts. There was no shortage of discussions and networking among nurses and medics.

“This is my first time attending the EAMNE conference and I’m really glad to attend,” said Lt. Cmdr. Amina Mildred Ogili, a military nurse for the Nigerian navy. “It’s an opportunity to learn, interact and meet new people from different parts of the world with brilliant and great ideas.”

Additionally, a huge benefit of the conference is the attendance of medical professionals from the U.S. Air Force’s sister services, medics from the U.S. Navy to the U.S Army, making the EAMNE a truly joint activity that hones medical readiness across the

Department of Defense.

“What an amazing opportunity to learn from other nurses within the NATO alliance and from partner nations around the world,” said Minnesota National Guard nurse and medic, Capt. Stacy Buschmann-Ford. “By collaborating and learning from each other we become a united team, and by working together we all gain valuable knowledge.”

Enhancing medical readiness is dependent on networking and creating team cohesiveness with other exceptional nurses from around the world, she added. Buschmann-Ford recommends any U.S. military nurse and medic participate in a USAFEAFAFRICA EAMNE event.

“Building partnerships and enhancing readiness is a priority for all of us, as U.S. Air Force medics and nurses,” said Col. Scott Tonko, USAFEAFAFRICA medical operations division chief and command nurse. “We already look forward to planning next year’s event and trying to bring in more allies and partners from around the world.”

21st TSC conducts Army Day with Air Force JROTC

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command held an Army Day for approximately 100 Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets on Panzer Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, June 13. This is the first time the Air Force JROTC program has partnered with the 21st TSC to host an event like this. Roughly half the cadets come from Army families and the event gave them the opportunity to see what the U.S. Army has to offer.

The Army Day is a part of a five-day cadet leadership course to develop better leaders for the junior ROTC program. The cadets came together from three different JROTC

programs from Kaiserslautern, Ramstein, and Spangdahlem High School. This challenged the cadets to work together with little to no prior interaction.

“This is a great opportunity to display the Army to the community and engage with the cadets on a professional level,” said Sgt. 1st Class Wayne Baker, non-commissioned officer in charge, 21st TSC.

“This event will allow the cadets to get some hands-on training with real Army equipment and showcase the many opportunities that the Army can provide.”

Non-commissioned officers taught different tasks at each station. The weapons familiarization station taught the cadets to disassemble and reassemble an M4 rifle

and M17 pistol. It also prepared the cadets for the engagement skills trainer [EST] range, a simulated range designed to help Soldiers to become proficient marksmen.

Cadet Emma Arambula, a thirdyear cadet from Kaiserslautern High School, said the weapons familiarization station was the most enjoyable part of the day.

“Watching all the cadets learn new things and try new things, like handling and taking apart the weapons, and learning how to do that was really fun,” said Arambula.

Cadets were broken down into five separate groups that rotated through five different stations. Each station showcased different military occupational specialties or tasks the

Army conducts. The stations ranged from communications equipment to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear familiarization, to include preventative maintenance checks and services the Army conducts on its equipment.

“So, one of the benefits of having three Air Force JROTC programs here in Germany, is it gives us the opportunity to take what we do individually, and then combine it to make our respective programs better,” said Lt. Col. (Ret.) William Conley, senior aerospace science instructor, Kaiserslautern High School. “When they come together with something like this, and they’re immersed in nothing but that leadership education, it takes it to a different level.”

Conley said almost half of the cadets grew up in an Army environment and this provides them the opportunity to see what their parents may do on a day-to-day basis.

“It’s very different,” said Arambula. “I’ll go home and tell my dad what we’re doing, and he’ll tell me how different it is from the Army.”

The event concluded as 1st Sgt. Willie Cole, first sergeant of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 21st TSC, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Alvin Poarch, senior enlisted advisor for the 21st STB, 21st TSC, handed out HHC, STB, and TSC challenge coins to the top five performing cadets of the day.

Porthmeor (St.Ives)

Porthmeor beach is an ideally situated destination. The sandy shoreline hosts a lovely little café (the Porthmeor beach café) that also doubles as a surf school, and is also only a stone’s throw away from the centre of town. St. Ives is imbued with character and zest, wholly refreshing. As one of the most characterful and appealing locations in Cornwall and as St. Ives’ premier beach, Porthmeor has more than earned its position on this list.

It is also a ‘Blue Flag’ beach, which means it is extremely family friendly –when you combine that with the great swells of tide, it is perfect for teaching kids how to learn to surf without concern. The beach itself is not the only attraction that St. Ives has to offer as it is also host to the famous Tate Gallery, which displays British and contemporary modern art.

The only problem with the beach itself is actually its popularity, which means it gets very crowded and therefore may not be the best choice for those who are looking for a calm stretch of shore on which to unwind.

Penhale Sands/Perranporth

If you enjoy sand dunes, then Perranporth is for you. It is one of the most extensive systems of sand in Cornwall, stretching for an impressive 3 miles. The length alone makes it highly recommended for those that want to go running or walking their dog – it is very steep, making it perfect for those that were looking to get some exercise.

Of course, like most beaches in Cornwall, there are facilities that allow you to rent wetsuits and boards. It is a very friendly location that attracts a diverse set of tourists. No visit to Perranporth is complete without checking out the Watering Hole, the UK’s only bar on the beach: it is fairly pricey but should not be missed nonetheless. BBQ lovers should also prioritize this beach as the dunes act as fantastic wind breaks and simultaneously offer up beautiful views.

Praa Sands (Near Helston)

Praa Sands differentiates itself from the other beaches by offering unrivalled coastal paths and views. Many visitors begin their journey in the small harbour of Porthleven, and walk the coastal path to the beach. This walk offers spectacular views of seas, cliffs and rocks.

Praa Sands is widely regarded as a place for expert surfers. Beginners may be better off trying other beaches that produce less powerful waves and boast less rocky terrain. It’s not necessarily a family beach as it is more oriented towards experts than newcomers; the tides are often very powerful and the beach fairly rocky.

Talland Bay Beach (Looe)

This is a peaceful little beach, perfect for families with children looking to explore rock pools. There is a relatively large car park nearby so you don’t have to worry about enduring a long trek. Those who go will also get the opportunity to swim amongst natural coves and tidal pools in a sheltered area that – unlike many beaches – is not overwhelmingly busy. The Talland bay café also makes for a worthwhile visit; it is not too costly and provides a very friendly welcome.

Coverack Beach (Lizard Peninsula)

This beach isn’t a sandy haven like the other beaches. It is actually quite rocky, but what it does do is offer something different. This beach is fairly off the beaten track, sitting ten miles away from the closest significant town. For those angling enthusiasts amongst you, the area is generally regarded as a fantastic

place to fish. It is also fairly quiet, peaceful, and less crowded than many of the other beaches. For diving enthusiasts, there are The Manacles, rocks which are said to have caused many shipwrecks. As a result it is a popular diving spot.

Cornwall is famous all over Britain (and) beyond for some very special delicacies. Make sure you try these when you visit:

• Cornish Pasties – a savoury baked dish made from pastry and filled with beef steak, onion, potato and swede.

• Clotted Cream – if you have ever had a ‘Cream Tea’ in Britain then you will know this wicked, yet delicious version of whipped cream.

• Cornish Fudge – is a soft, sweet and rich confectionary made by mixing and heating sugar, butter and milk.

• Cornish Ice Cream – is considered the Grand Dame of ice creams – rich, creamy and utterly delicious.

• Cornish Crab – fishing is an important industry in this part of Britain and crabbing in particular. Don’t miss the chance to try some freshly caught crab at a local restaurant.

Driving through villages and towns at this time of the year, drivers might see signs and posters announcing an annual event called “Kerwe” or “Kirchweih,” which means carnival or festival.

The original word Kirchweih translated means church consecration. In the Palatinate dialect it was changed to Kerwe.

Since the third century, newly built Christian churches were consecrated in a solemn ceremony, where the priest cleansed the new church of demons. Originally Kerwe was a church celebration, which changed into a worldly event with carnivals, dance performances and other amusements.

Until the 1920s, Kerwe was, besides Christmas, the most important fest in a village. Houses and fences were painted. Children received new clothes, and women cooked and baked for relatives and other guests coming to visit the fest. Young ladies and men also used the opportunity to meet each other at these festivals and many a couple tied the knot in the following months.

Today the fest is less important in terms of relative or friend gatherings. People still cook a lot, the carnival or festival is set up on the village’s marketplace, gasthouses offer dances, and sometimes a parade goes through town.

There are normally a lot of food and beverage booths, rides for kids and elders, and music on various stages ranging from traditional German tunes to pop and rock. Most towns also offer a “Frühschoppen,” a type of early morning drinking event, with lively traditional “oompa” music.

The village youth binds the traditional “Kerwestrauss,” a pole decorated with thousands of colored ribbons, which is mounted up at the local gasthaus. Here the traditional “Kerwerede,” a speech about local scandals, sensations and funny events is read in typical dialect by a good speaker standing on a ladder.

In the 16th century, Kerwe was celebrated mainly in the months of October and November. Today a lot of carnivals take place in July, August or September because of the weather. In the past Kerwe was similar to Thanksgiving with people celebrating the end of harvest.
