Normandy locals welcome American military for family dinner

Every year the streets of the small towns along the coast of Normandy are lined with banners and posters, flags are strung across the streets, and windows are painted with parachutists and C-47 aircraft in honor of D-Day. The locals of Normandy excitedly celebrate through the streets and at events, welcoming American service members to the area.

Part of the celebration includes a family dinner night where U.S. military are paired with a local French family and welcomed into their homes. This year for D-Day 79, 200 Airmen and Soldiers were paired with families in SainteMère-Église, France, June 1. The family dinners kicked off

D-Day celebrations at the Town Hall of Sainte-Mère-Église, where military members from both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army who are stationed overseas and stateside mingled with local Normandy families. When a good connection was made, the family invited military members for dinner.

Some families cooked dinner, some explored the historic sites in the area before taking their service members out to dinner, but all enjoyed a shared interest in celebrating the liberation of Normandy and the sacrifices of the service members who stormed its beaches 79 years ago.

Catherine Shelton and her American husband Tom took two U.S. Air Force members from Ramstein Air Base, to a few local sites before heading to a restaurant. While the Sheltons no longer live in Normandy, they regularly return and both have different, strong ties to Normandy.

Catherine grew up on a farm in Fontenay sur Mer, but at the time of the war she wasn’t born yet and her mother lived there until the Nazi regime took over the family’s land and turned it into a headquarters building. This was one of the places they drove by with the Airmen before dinner. Catherine said their family, and many others, watched as their lands were taken over and much of Normandy was destroyed.

About thirty minutes north, the man who would later become Catherine’s father was forced to work for the Germans. He escaped and was on the run when D-Day occurred.

“D-Day is significant because it came after a difficult time in Normandy,” she said. “Families were never the same after that.”

The people of Normandy are eternally grateful to the Americans who came in 1944 because D-Day changed the course of the war and stopped the oppression from continuing. Catherine said the people of Normandy don’t like to talk about the war, but instead talk about the liberation.

“We want to remember the people and celebrate the American military who came to our beaches and did incredible acts of heroism,” she said.

Everyone in the local area grew up going to the celebrations each year and their stories are passed down from generation to generation, Catherine said. Everyone knows the stories and loves to celebrate the liberation.

Even the owner of the restaurant the Shelton’s took their Airmen to, Francois, said the impact of D-Day in 1944 cannot be emphasized enough because everyone has a connection to it.

“My parents talked about what they went through on D-Day and they remember seeing the sky full of paratroopers in Cherbourg,” Francois said.

“Everything was destroyed and the Americans came to liberate us. We cannot thank the Americans enough for what they did so many years ago.”

he will never forget.

“Catherine’s history was very interesting to hear about, especially when she talked about how her father did his best to resist the occupation,” he said. “We got to see parts of the Atlantic wall, and knowing it was built by people like her father with forced labor made it much more meaningful.”

Leverenz said the 37th AS, which is a descendent of the 37th Troop Carrier Group that dropped parachutists on D-Day, has a saying that they “stand on the shoulders of giants” and that he never felt that more keenly than when supporting D-Day 79 events.

“It reminds me how privileged we are for the reputation we have,” he said. “It was paid for in blood, sweat and tears by people like Catherine’s father, her husband’s father as a C-47 pilot, and all our veterans.”

Through a few courses, the dinner conversation turned to military history and family legacies, a shared interest in aircraft and also cheese.

“I loved getting to share a meal with them!” Leverenz said. “The opportunity for conversation with the Sheltons and also the restaurant owner was something that will be a highlight of my experience here.”

From the unwavering heroism and bravery displayed at D-Day 79 years ago to the current military members attending and supporting D-Day 79 ceremonies, Catherine said Normandy residents are happy to welcome the American military.

“We can never pay back the lives lost, but we want to honor them and celebrate the liberation with Americans,” she said.

hung on the wall to always remember the sacrifices made by a previous generation. The locals are not the only ones with generations of ties to D-Day or the military.

Tom’s father was a U.S. Army C-47 pilot who flew the “Hump” during World War II, and while he wasn’t in Normandy, he contributed to the overall downfall of the Nazi party while flying in Germany.

The legacy of American military service continued when Tom joined the U.S. Army and his son followed in his footsteps when he joined the U.S. Marines and later became a CH-47 Chinook helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army.

The family history and connections over a shared meal was an enriching experience. U.S. Air Force Capt. Eric Leverenz, 37th Airlift Squadron C-130 pilot, was one of the Airmen who dined with the Sheltons and said the experience was something

Like many of the residents in Normandy, the conversation wasn’t focused on the destruction, but turned to the liberation and bravery of the service members who stormed the beaches the Airmen and the Sheltons stood on 79 years later.

Not only do the many ceremonies and aircraft flyovers allow Normandy to celebrate their freedom from oppression, but the family dinners that kick off the D-Day celebrations every year are just a small piece to continuing partnerships and remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both German countries reunited in 1990. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) included 11 states and Berlin, in its geographically isolated location. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was comprised of five states and today’s Germany has a total of 16 “Bundesländer.”

After reunification Berlin again became the capital and the seat of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) and the representative body of the states (Bundesrat). Olaf Scholz of the majority Social Democratic Party (SPD) is the elected Federal Chancellor of the country with 84 million inhabitants.

This month we will make a large leap back down south to the State of Baden-Württemberg, a neighbor to Rheinland-Pfalz towards the East, which calls itself the ‘sunny side of Germany.’ The state has an area of 35,000 square kilometers and just over 11 million inhabitants.

The capital is Stuttgart with its Landtag (State Parliament).

Winfried Kretschmann of the Green Party has been Minister President since 2011 and was recently reelected for his third term in office.

City of Squares

Our journey will start in Mannheim, across the Rhein River from Ludwigshafen in RheinlandPfalz, which is the largest city in the Baden part and the second largest in the whole state. It has 311,830 inhabitants and lies on both the Rhein and Neckar Rivers.

As a former Residential city (1720–1778) and its Baroque palace, one of the largest palace structures in the world, it is now the economic and cultural center of the Metropolitan Region Rhein-Neckar with a total of 2.4 million inhabitants.

Mannheim is well known for its chessboard layout of the city center, where streets do not have names, but are distguished by squares such as A6 or Q9. This often leads to confusion for the postal service or when stating your address and is sometimes called the City of Squares. Since 1896 it has had a population of over 100,000 residents and evolved into an important industrial and commerical city. As a significant rail hub between Frankfurt/ Main and Stuttgart, especially for ICE trains, it has the second largest marshalling yard and a leading domestic port.

Apart from the palace, which now houses one of the two universities, the Wasserturm (water tower) is the most prominent landmark in the city. It is situated in the Augusta Anlage, a park with fountains colorfully illuminated at night and next to the Rose Garden, a theater and concert hall. The tower was built upon the initiative of Benjamin Thompson of Massachusetts, based on a shortage of drinking water and construction was completed in 1889. The area around the 60-meter-high and 19-meter circular structure is also venue to the annual Christmas Market.

Further attractions are the ReissEngelhorn Museum, the Art Hall and the Technomuseum, which has a popular planetarium. The pedestrian area in the “Planken” (the squares) is home to department stores and a narrow road next to the Marktplatz is lovingly referred to as “Kücük Istanbul – Little Istanbul” with typical Turkish restaurants and shops. Due to the high percentage of descendants of Turkish guest workers that came to Germany in the 1960’s, some in the third or fourth generation, you may also see signs in Turkish in regular shops and stores. Lose your heart in Heidelberg

It is not surprising that Heidelberg along the Neckar River gave name to a popular German folksong “I lost my heart in Heidelberg.” Its picturesque market square with a church, a charming and historical walking area, narrow alleys, pubs and restaurants as well as a magnificent castle towering above the city and its famous bridge, attract over 11 million international visitors a year. The city is also home to one of the oldest and elite universities in Germany, founded in 1386, that specializes in medicine, research,

linguistic and philosophy. About 39,000 students make up almost 25 percent of the total population of 160,000 and create a young, fun and bustling atmosphere in the city. For more information, see https:// www.heidelberg.de/english/Home/ Visit.html

UNESCO City of Media Arts

Karlsruhe, the third largest city in the state with 306,000 inhabitants is a further city planned during the Residential era and construction began in 1715. It is also referred to as “Fächerstadt” (fan city) based on 32 streets that fan out from the magnificent palace and gardens. In 2019 it received the international UNESCO Creative Cities Network Award as city of media arts and has been in exchange with media arts and creative sites around the world.

The city has six universities, including faculties for design, arts and technology. It can easily be traveled by tram, has a large pedestrian zone and recently opened its first subway line. The zoo across from the train station is a popular spot to see wild animals, ride a gondola on the lake or picnic in the park. Further attractions include a botanical garden, a rose garden, a Japanese Garden and an aqua park. There are several lakes around the city or you can enjoy beaches along the Rhein River in the vicinity. A Festival of the Senses takes place every year in the summer. Also see, www.karlsruhe.de.

Traveling southbound we’ll first encounter soft rolling hills and the picturesque town of Ettlingen along the Alb River. The town with semitimbered houses, a Baroque castle and a lively market square is considered to be the gateway to the Nature Reserve Black Forest Center/ North. It served as a strategic road connection as early as Roman times

and a Roman bath and a Neptune stone are located underneath the Martinskirche (church). It is a great place to stop for a shopping or coffee break enroute to the Black Forest.

Cuckoo clocks and a Bommel

The first thing that may come to your mind when thinking about the Black Forest might be the famous cuckoo clocks. The largest clock is located in the Eble Uhrenpark in Triberg, was built in a ratio of 60:1 and can be visited inside and out. The largest clock wheel has a diameter of 2.60 meters (8.5 feet), it weighs six metric tons and has an eight meter (26 feet) long pendulum.

The Black Forest region has a long tradition of manufacturing clocks, and it is said that the first clock with cuckoo sounds belonged to Kurfürst August of Saxony as early as 1629. Mass production and fine tuning of these clocks is attributed to Franz Ketterer around the mid 1850’s.

The Schwarzwald is Germany’s highest and largest low mountain range with an area of 6,000 square kilometers and up to an altitude of 1,493 meters (4,900 feet). The range stretches south, just along the Baden winegrowing region and the Rhein River, a natural border to Lorraine in France. The name Black Forest is derived from the very tall and dark fir trees, which make the region appear rather dark or even black. The town of Freudenstadt atop a plateau is a popular aerial spa town, famous for its market square and starting point for exciting hiking trails.

timber, but often decorated with artistic window shutters and balconies hung with colorful flowers. Some women wear traditional dresses and to top things off, straw hats with giant, bright red pompoms called “Bommel.”

One of the famous valleys in the south of the Hochschwarzwald (High Black Forest) is the Ravenna Schlucht (gorge) north of the city of Freiburg in the Breisgau Region. Freiburg is another popular university town, has small water canals throughout the city and is famous for its large farmer’s market at the church square. Titi See, a mountain lake, is nearby and the city is famed for being the hottest town in Germany, both in the sense of temperature in the summer and its bustling student flair. It is also gateway to other tourist destinations such as Colmar in France, is close to Switzerland at the source of the Rhein River, and lies enroute to Germany’s largest lake Bodensee (Lake Constance).

Cruise the lake and discover pile dwellings

Lake Constance is at Germany’s most southern end and borders Switzerland to the south and Austria to the southeast. In the summer it can have an almost Mediterranean climate, some shores are aligned with palm trees and exotic flowers. Insel Mainau is famous for its monastery and is called the “Blumeninsel” (island of flowers). In addition to various floral displays, also famed for orchids, the island is also venue to classic concerts and festivities. You

can hop on a ferry from the north shore and stop for a break on your way to Konstanz, the city that gave the lake its English name.

Konstanz borders Switzerland and has a well-preserved Middle Age core in addition to several museums and a promenade along the shore, where visitors are greeted by Imperia a huge statue holding a flame.

The town of Unteruhldingen on the north shore boasts an impressive outdoor archaeological museum with 23 reconstructions of pile dwellings. The dwellings from the Bronze and Stone Ages tell of the lives and times of our ancestors up to 7,000 years ago who settled at the lake and made a living out of fishing and trading. https://www.bodensee.eu/ en/what-to-do/map-of-lake-constance/lake-dwelling-museumunteruhldingen

Other towns worth a visit along the lake are Meersburg with an impressive castle atop, a cozy walking area with medieval character and you can spend a night at a Middle Age hotel with knights in shining armor. Take a relaxing mini-cruise with a view of the snowcapped Swiss Alps in the background to Friedrichshafen or to picturesque Lindau, located on a peninsula. The Austrian town of Bregenz can easily be reached by boat or you can continue your voyage onto Romanshorn in Switzerland. The 260-kilometerlong biking trail around the lake is one of the most popular routes in Germany and leads you to cultural highlights in three countries.

Caves, spas and Porsche

Traveling back north you can enjoy a leisurely drive along the “Schwäbische Alb” with soft rolling hills and green pastures with grazing sheep. The town of Calw, birthplace of German author Hermann Hesse, is worth a stop to admire its medieval town center. The Swabian Alb, which stretches 200 kilometers, is well known for its landscape of 2,500 caves, some of them with the oldest known works of art carved into the rock and the region is proud of its 40,000 years of culture. Twenty of the caves are open to the public and the most popular cave is Wimsener Höhle that can be toured by boat. In addition, there are a number of castles in the region, a Gaelic village is under construction and there are several spa towns with geothermic springs. The capital of the state lies in the “Stuttgarter Kessel” (valley) with 626,000 inhabitants and is the sixth largest city in Germany. The city section Cannstatt dates back to Roman times and ruins of the former castell are still visible. Cannstadt is also the venue to Germany’s second largest beer festival “Cannstadter Wasen.”

The city is famed for its numerous theaters, an opera house and musical performances at the stage center near the airport, has a castle and a large pedestrian and shopping area downtown. It is also well known for its automobile manufacturers such as Porsche and Mercedes-Benz (both with museums) and companies that produce accessories, such as Bosch

electronics, and are the region’s largest employers.

Other attractions are three palaces, a Chinese Garden and the “Wilhelma,” one of Germany’s largest zoos and botanical gardens. Enjoy a ride with the nostalgic rackrail “Zacke” built in 1884 and a spectacular view over the city or visit the “Stuttgarter Weindorf” and the indoor market hall. Due to its location in the valley, Stuttgart can have a damp climate with occasional smog, which led to very restrictive limitations on diesel powered vehicles. https:// en.stuttgart.de/.

Traveling towards the East, the small town of Günzburg lies along the route, well-known for its Legoland Park, with colorful exhibitions, rides and attractions for young and old, and a miniature wonderland of models of cites around the world.

The City of Ulm, just short of the border to Bavaria is another historical city worth exploring. The Ulmer Münster, a cathedral built in Gothic style, has the highest church tower in the world at a height of 161 meters. Climb the 768 steps to a platform at 143 meters altitude for a fantastic view of the medieval city center. Stroll through the “Fischer und Gerberviertel” (fisher and tan-

ner quarter) built on stilts, where seven watermills produced energy during the Middle Ages and spend a night in the most crooked hotel in the world, mentioned in the Guinness Book of World records in 1997. Fishers used the shallow Blau River to row out to the Donau (Danube). The Danube also separates Ulm from the newer city of Neu-Ulm, founded in 1811, which lies in the neighbor state of Bavaria. Visit the Ulmer Nabada, a fun race with colorful boats, rafts and dinghies on the river which takes place in the summer or enjoy a leisure cruise on the sparkling blue waters of the Danube on its journey toward the Black Sea another 2,000 kilometers further east.

Traveling southbound on A7 you will eventually have a magnificent view of the German and Austrian Alps up to 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) high along lush green pastures and dairy cows in the Allgäu region. The final destination is the city of Sonthofen (in Bavaria), Germany’s most southern city almost exactly 1,000 kilometers from Glücksburg in the north.

A few fun facts to round off our journey: Swabians are said to be a bit stingy, but they claim to being multitalented with their slogan in distinctive dialect “Mir kennet alles, außer Hochdeutsch!” (We can (do) anything except (speak) high German!”)

German-led live-fly exercise Air Defender 2023 will take off in June

BERLIN – Exercise Air Defender 2023 (AD23) is a German-led, multinational exercise focusing on operational and tactical-level live-flying and will take place across Germany from June 12-24.

AD23 involves Air Forces from 24 Nations and 220 aircraft. The German Air Force ensures command and control of air operations during the exercise. It will be combined in time and space with the German-led Multinational Air Group Exercise (MAGDAYS 23) and linked to two NATO exercises (RAMSTEIN DUST 23 and RAMSTEIN GUARD 23).

“Our goals for this largest deployment exercise since the foundation of NATO are comprehensive,” said Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, Chief German Air Force. “We want to demonstrate the agility and swiftness of Air Forces as a first responder and showcase NATO Air Power. In addition, we as the Luftwaffe show that we can plan, organise and execute such a large exercise. We take responsibility. The collaboration of 24 Nations hones our interoperability and enables a credible deterrence against a potential aggressor. The transatlantic dimension — we will have 100 U.S. Air National Guard aircraft flying in Europe — is a rock-solid proof of NATO cohesion and solidarity,” Lieutenant General Gerhartz concluded underlining the importance of Germany as a hub for Allied defensive operations within Europe.

Participating Air Forces will be exposed to training scenarios simulating a NATO Article 5 scenario, i.e. collective defence of Alliance territory. Following the arrival and bed-down of incoming U.S. reinforcements and other Allied aircraft at three hubs in Germany, Jagel/Hohn in Schleswig-Holstein, Wunstorf in Lower Saxony and Lechfeld in Bavaria as well as Spangdahlem in Rhineland-Palatinate, Volkel in the Netherlands and Cáslav in the Czech Republic, the participants will practice Composite Air Operations in training areas over Germany and conduct so-called out-and-back missions into the Baltic States and Romania.

Assets from Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States will be flying in AD23.

The training areas in the east, south and north of Germany used during AD23 are based on areas that the Air Force has used for routine training for decades. However, to accommodate comprehensive large-force flying activities they have been expanded and partly connected with each other by corridors.

“With AD23 we practice a wide spectrum of Air Operations via large daily COMAOs and underscore Germany’s capability to ensure command and control of multinational Air Forces,” said Lieutenant General Gerhartz. “Another important aspect is to facilitate continuation training for Air Force units and reinforcing our cooperative bond with the eastern flank of NATO by conducting Air Defence mission in the Czech Republic airspace to reinforce the cooperative bond with east,” he added.

While large-scale training is essential to maintain a credible deterrence and defence capability of Allied Air Forces, the German Air Force is making efforts to minimise the impact of AD23 on the population. The three air exercise areas will only be used for two to four hours a day at various times and, for safety reasons, closed for civilian air traffic during these time windows. In close cooperation with the authorities responsible for flight safety processes and procedures are currently being optimised to minimise the effects on civilian air traffic as much as possible.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz welcomed four local national students from the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder communities May 30, as part of the Garrison Apprenticeship Program initiative.

The program, which starts Sept. 1, will place the students in various administrative positions within the garrison, giving them a unique opportunity to learn about its different installations and gain practical experience in a chosen field. Apprentices will be able to develop skills and knowledge to prepare them for their future careers.

Col. Reid Furman, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, welcomed the apprentices and provided remarks.

“I would like to welcome everybody here today,” said Furman. “This is our second year of sponsoring an apprentice program — which is a very important program to me.”

Furman gave a brief overview of the services offered by USAG Rheinland-Pfalz and emphasized the importance of becoming a part of the garrison team.

“We are a team based on values and service to our customers,” he said. “We have strong leadership across the garrison — the range of services we provide is really incredible.”

Over the next few years, USAG RheinlandPfalz will experience a significant number of retirements among its local national positions. As these retirements occur, there will be a need to fill the resulting vacancies with qualified personnel. The number of apprentices required will be driven by the number of retirees, so the apprentice program will play a critical role in maintaining the workforce.

The Apprenticeship Program is a strategic initiative for USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, not only to ensure continuity of services but also by providing valuable opportunities for the apprentices to develop their skills and grow into these future roles/positions. Welcoming

these students as apprentices helps the garrison nurture young talent, provides realworld experience and mentorship, and contributes to their educational and professional development.

“You will interact with the Soldiers, families, and Civilians who live here — this makes YOU the face of the Garrison,” said Furman. “The next three years will help you understand how big the Garrison’s impact is, and how important what we do really is.”

To be considered for white-collar / office management positions, applicants need to be at least 18 years old, hold a valid Class B driver’s license, and be high school graduates. For blue-collar / labor positions, applicants need to be at least 15 years old, and hold a secondary school diploma. Both white-collar and blue-collar positions within the program require good grades in English, strong communication skills and the applicants should display attributes such as resilience, reliability, and a willingness to learn.

The apprentices welcomed today will be placed in office management positions and be rotated every six months throughout the different directorates. This will provide them exposure to the various aspects of the organization’s mission while they develop a wellrounded knowledge of the entire organization and its operations. After 18 months, the apprentices will be placed in their assigned positions.

“It’s a lot of information to take in in one session,” Furman said. “I want you to know we are happy to have you on our team. I hope that you will all have great experiences here, that you learn something new every day, and that at the end of the three years you decide to be a permanent part of our team.”

Heat illnesses and injuries are no fun! What is heat-related illness? Heat-related illness, or hyperthermia, is a condition resulting from exposure to extreme heat where the body becomes unable to properly cool, resulting in a rapid rise in body temperature.

This, in turn, prevents the body from releasing heat quickly. Prompt treatment of heat-related illnesses with aggressive fluid replacement and cooling of core body temperature is critical to reducing illness and preventing death. Be safe when taking part in outside activities and remember to hydrate!

United States Army Agricultural African Swine Flu Wash in Adazi, Latvia

ADAZI, LATVIA — In the scope of global biosecurity, the United States Army conducted an Agricultural African Swine Flu (ASF) Wash from May 20-22 here, where contractors cleaned vehicles and equipment with chemicals, which in turn plays a critical role in safeguarding Soldiers and civilians against the spread of African Swine Flu and other potential agricultural threats.

“An important part of our redeployment process back from Defender 23 is right here in Camp Adazi,” said Capt. Robert Rivera, an operations officer at 405th Army Field Support Brigade. “They’re sanitizing and cleaning our equipment so we’re able to ship it back to Germany, it’s beneficial not only to us but to the contractors out here that are conducting the wash itself.”

By conducting ASF washing and disinfection operations, the United States Army helps support and ensure regional biosecurity and upholds the commitment to protect Europe’s agricultural safety.

“The AFS wash is a regulation that has been passed down in Europe to prevent Africa’s swine flu virus that are in boars to be spread through other countries within Europe,” said Rivera. “Training here in the dirt and the sand, we have to make sure our equipment is clean and certified to go back to Germany, ensuring that we’re not spreading the virus.”

African Swine Flu is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs. The disease can be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals, but it can also spread through contaminated materials such as vehicles,

equipment and personnel. To prevent the unintentional transmission of ASF, the wash takes proactive measures to thoroughly clean and disinfect military vehicles returning from various missions throughout Europe.

“There are a lot of moving components here, from humvees, M142 high mobility artillery rocket system, containers, forklifts and trailers,” said Rivera. “There are over 130 pieces being moved.”

With so many moving components, it’s important to have each piece of equipment and vehicle disinfected and with the strict protocols, it ensures the effective removal of any potential contaminants from military vehicles. A washing process is carried out to eliminate visible dirt, debris and organic matter. High-pressure water jets, specialized brushes and environmentally friendly detergents are utilized to cleanse the vehicles, paying close attention to the undercarriages, wheels and other hard-to-reach areas where

contaminants can hide.

“As the redeployment process comes to an end here in Adazi, there is another process in Germany where the equipment is received, downloaded and then moved back to a maintenance phase,” said Rivera.

The ASF wash plays a critical role in allowing these vehicles to be moved to their next destination and ensures the security of health across Europe. By adhering to these washing and disinfection protocols, the contractors washing the vehicles and equipment ensure that each piece is to standard and is ready for redistribution. Through collaborative efforts and a com-

mitment to personnel training, the ASF Wash demonstrates the United States Army’s dedication to protecting Europe and eliminating the risks associated with transboundary diseases.

DEFENDER 23 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa-led exercise focused on the strategic deployment of continental United States-based forces, employment of Army Prepositioned Stocks, and interoperability with Allies and partners. Taking place from April 22 to June 23, DEFENDER 23 demonstrates USAREUR-AF’s ability to aggregate U.S.-based combat

power quickly in Eastern Europe, increase lethality of the NATO Alliance through long-distance fires, build unit readiness in a complex joint, multi-national environment, and leverage host nation capabilities to increase USAREUR-AF’s operational reach. DEFENDER 23 includes more than 7,000 U.S. and 17,000 multi-national service members from more than 20 nations who will participate including, but not limited to: Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

The Kaiserbrunnen (Emperor’s Fountain) at Mainzer Tor in Kaiserslautern was designed by Gernot Rumpf, a sculptor of Kaiserslautern, in 1987. The bronze fountain pictures the most important historical and current characteristics of the City of Kaiserslautern.

The most prominent feature is a sculpture of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa (1122-1190) situated in the middle of the fountain. In 1152, Emperor Barbarossa had an imperial palace (Kaiserpfalz) commissioned in the settlement which over time has turned into what is now the City of Kaiserslautern. Emperor Barbarossa used the palace as a residence when preparing for crusades and enjoying his favorite pastime hunting.

The second person featured on the fountain is King Rudolf of Habsburg (1218-1291) who gave Kaiserslautern its city rights in 1276. Gaining these city rights meant certain privileges, for example more

independence in the governing of a city or holding a market.

As the heraldic animal for the City of Kaiserslautern, a fish can be found as well. Another creature that is sculpted is the “Elwedritsche,” a regional fabulous creature, which can only be caught with a giant net on a full moon night. The owl stands for wisdom and Kaiserslautern’s history as a city of school and university, the elephants and the city towers symbol-

ize strength of the former city walls.

An Opel engine and a Pfaff sewing machine represent the city’s economic development after World War II, while the wheels stand for the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and technical innovation.

You might have noticed that Kaiserslautern is famous for soccer. A soccer ball signed by legendary Fritz Walter is therefore part of the fountain as well. Fritz Walter

from Alsenborn played for the local soccer team 1. FC Kaiserslautern for decades and led the German national team to its victory during the Soccer World Championship in 1954.

Other objects to be found are Napoleon’s hat for the time that Kaiserslautern was governed by France after the Napoleonic Wars, a horse armor of the knights of the Rittersberg as well as a donkey and a horse.

A basket with honey marks traditional beekeepers and a wagon with grapes characterizes a former viticulture area near Kaiserslautern. An emigrant ship with a cloud full of dreams above its sails symbolizes the wave of Palatinate emigrants who sailed to the United States with hopes of a prosperous future. An estimated 100,000 Palatines left the area and settled mainly in Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Elegant photos can be taken as a lady or a knight behind the two sculptures on the side of the fountain.

Last but not least, a mouse is hidden among the other figures, it doesn’t hold any historical significance, but is the sculptor’s “signature” or personal identification mark. Visit the fountain, get a glimpse of history and see if you can catch the mouse!

In addition, Gernot Rumpf created further bronze fountains, such as the Glockenbaum fountain in Mainz, the Elwedritsche-Brunnen in Neustadt/Weinstrasse and the Papyrusbrunnen in Mannheim.

The circular path of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) leads through the fields and meadows of Heimkirchen and offers wonderful rural views. Along the signposted trail, culinary specialties are provided at 8 resting places. Experience a large variety of the Palatinate cuisine and culinary dishes along the scenic landscape of Heimkirchen. Entertainment for kids and adults is offered, too. The route goes past the huge sundial that was built in 2020 and consists of twelve sandstone obelisks. Trail hikers can also stop at the farm museum at Holbornerhof, a historic landmark. Ancient equipment and tools give great insight into what farmers´ lives looked like in the past. Parking is recommended along the country road between Niederkirchen and Heimkirchen.

In good weather, visitors have a great view and they can get some additional information about the city (Landstuhl) in the valley. Registration is not required. The tour starts at 10 a.m. and lasts about 90 minutes. Meeting point for the tour is the cannon tower of the castle next to the parking lot.

MÜNSTER from Page 1

The city of Münster has a population of about 300,000 and is the bicycle capital of Germany. During the Middle Ages, it played a major role in the Hanseatic League. It is famous for the Anabaptist Rebellion of 1533-34 and for its role as the location of the signing of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which ended the 30 Years War. Münster also has a major university, which hosts more than 40,000 students.

Must-see destinations include:

1. Prinzipalmarkt. This is a long pedestrian area (like a little shopping mile) lined on both sides with quaintly gabled buildings. You can take your pick from the almost unlimited categories of products sold in one-of-a-kind boutiques, or you can sit outdoors and soak up the sunshine with a cappuccino or one of their well-known local beers.

2. The Rathaus (Town Hall) is located on the Prinzipalmarkt. It is famous as the location where European nobility met to sign the Peace of Westphalia, ending the infamous 30 Year War. Fought mainly in what is now Germany, this was the longest conflict of the modern era and, in the end, involved almost every power in Europe. Entry to the Friedensaal (Hall of Peace) is €2 per person, Tue-Fri 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., SatSun 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

3. Pablo Picasso Museum. This small but interesting museum contains some important works of Picasso. Entry: €10 per person. Kids up to 6 are free. Kids 16 and under cost €4.00. Open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

4. Wochenmarkt Münster (Münster’s Weekly Market). This takes place on the Domplatz every Wed and Sat til 2:30 p.m. You can visit this fabulous market, one of the best in Germany. Fresh fruits

and vegetables of all kinds, cheeses, flowers, fresh bread – even Dutch licorice – are all available to taste…before you buy. Visited regularly by many of the local inhabitants of Münsterland, this market is often crowded.

5. Münster Cathedral (Dome of St. Paulus). Located on the highest hill in Münster and right next to the Prinzipalmarkt, this Cathedral is a great choice for a visit since it is so close to the other sightseeing recommendations. Originally build in the 8th century, it was rebuilt after a fire in the 13th century. The astronomical clock and organ can be seen inside the church after the renovation is complete.

6. St. Lamberti’s Church. Located on the north end of the Prinzipalmarkt, this church is famous for the three iron cages that can still be seen hanging from part of the steeple. These iron cages once contained the tortured and

executed bodies of the leaders of the Anabaptist Rebellion of 1533-34. There is no cost to enter the church to view the large organ, colored windows and huge decorated ceiling.

7. Stadtmuseum (City Museum). It is free to visit and contains a detailed description of Münster’s history, along with reproductions, great old photos, written descriptions, archeological samples – which will be really enjoyable if you are interested in the historical aspects of the city and region.
