Exercise Anakonda 2016 wraps up on high note

Staff Sgt. Thad Taylor, 15th Air Support Operations Squadron joint terminal attack controller, scouts the landscape as he participates in exercise Anakonda 2016 June 10 in Poland. Exercise Anakonda 2016 is a U.S.- and Polish-led exercise involving several nations, with over 25,000 participants from more than 20 countries.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SWIDWIN AIR BASE, Poland — Anakonda 2016 is a U.S.- and Polish-led international exercise that seeks to train, exercise and integrate their national command and force structures with allied

nations to form a multinational working environment. The exercise ended on a high note after the U.S. Air Force and Army coordinated the first live airdrop by U.S. aircraft in Poland since World War II. The exercise allowed Airmen to demonstrate their abilities as well as maintain their readiness. “For the tactical air control party and weather

staff, it was extremely important to participate in a live-exercise environment with our partners,” said Col. Eric Chapital, 4th Air Support Operations Group commander. “If we aren’t able to come out here and do our job then catastrophes may occur in a combat situation.” See ANAKONDA, Page 2

RIGA, Latvia — U.S. Airmen joined more than 4,500 military members from 13 different NATO countries as they kicked off exercise Saber Strike ’16 June 12. Saber Strike is a long-standing, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff-directed, U.S. Army Europe-led cooperative-training exercise, which has been conducted annually since 2010. This year’s exer-

cise focused on promoting interoperability with allies and regional partners and improving joint-operational capability in a variety of missions to prepare the participating nations and units for the future. The exercise featured the integration of close air support with allied and partnered nation ground forces as well as the testing of air deployment of forces and equipment. The exercise was conducted through June 21. Capt. Douglas Mabe, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot and SbS16 C-130 mis-

sion commander, explained the importance of training for real-world situations. “Participating in Saber Strike allows the U.S. to accurately simulate supporting our NATO partners in a largescale conflict spanning several countries,” Mabe said. “As tactical airlifters, we must always be prepared to execute any of our various mission sets and capabilities at a moment’s notice, anywhere in the world at any time. This exercise will test our ability to successfully communicate across

USAFE command chief reflects on retirement by Tech. Sgt. Oneika Banks U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

The command chief for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, Chief Master Sgt. James E. Davis, spent a last few moments reflecting on his 30-year military career before retiring June 13. He came into the Air Force as a young man from Memphis, Tennessee, searching for something different. But Davis said the influence of one individual was all it took to make his new job and steady paycheck become a career with real possibilities. “I really hadn’t found my way, and along came sergeant Harry Washington. ... He said to me specifically, ‘There’s something different about you,’” the chief recalled. “And that really changed my whole perspective.” The encounter with his former mentor is something that Chief Davis said ultimately changed the direction of his life. “It made me want to be a better Airman because he somehow saw something in me that I didn’t see,” Davis said. Over the next three

decades, Davis won several recognition awards, became a supervisor, manager and leader, earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and became a husband and father. Through it all, he supported the Air Force to the best of his ability as it changed and adapted to meet mission requirements across the globe. He said he did all this by following his “BOOT.” “I use this acronym called BOOT, and the B is be

According to Chapital, the airdrop was a fitting end to Anakonda 2016. The exercise included over 25,000 service members from participating nations, and although the weather was not ideal throughout, conditions provided a valuable training opportunity for the weather Airmen and those training alongside them. “Their job is to integrate into the mission-planning and mission-execution cycles to help the com-

Although he expressed excitement about heading home to Tennessee, the 30-year veteran has a few things he knows he will miss about being in the Air Force — particularly, its people and the bonds of service that connect them. “(It’s) the commonality, the like-mindedness, (working) toward a common goal,” Davis said. “Seeing the uniform, no matter whether it’s U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy or the Marines, it doesn’t matter. ... It’s something that we have in common, that only one percent of Americans get to do, and that’s what I’ll miss the most.” But before he takes off the uniform for the last time, the chief has one last piece of advice for all Airmen. In true chief fashion, he ends his career with a reflection on the pillars of resiliency. “The success that I’ve had starts with my faith because that is the foundation for everything that I have done, not only in the military but also with my family,” Davis said “We need to capitalize on the models that we have out there — the spiritual piece, the mental piece, the physical piece, the social piece. We have to embrace those because that’s what’s going to allow you to be successful.”

development of their career fields. “At one evening battle-update brief, no less than five brigade commanders singled out their weather teams during their portion of the brief for exceptional performance. That’s huge,” Dawson said. The objectives met throughout the exercise included completing multinational air assault, air defense and bridging operations. The 4th ASOG and its partners demonstrated the Air Force’s ability to integrate with allies to ensure operational safety and mission readiness.

AFOSI emphasizes online safety for children, teenagers by Staff Sgt. Leslie Keopka 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations identified individuals who were recently convicted of online exploitation of children during the time frame of December 2014 to February 2015 on Ramstein. Through the Internet Crimes Against Children program, five military members were convicted of attempting to meet and engage in criminal acts with children under the age of 16. Two military members received Article 15s and two others are still pending trial. ICAC was designed to battle the online activity of predators looking to take advantage of children and teenagers who use the internet and other technology devices. With the summer months here, children have more free time to browse the internet. It is as important as ever to know what your children are doing while using the computer. AFOSI agents offer helpful tips for parents to be aware of their children’s internet usage. “Speak to your children about the dangers of online behaviors, such as posting personal information and chatting with strangers,” said Special Agent Adam Frashure, AFOSI 13th Field Investigation Squadron. “Set clear ground rules for your children’s computer usage and place computers in public spaces to allow for monitoring your child’s online activities.” While many teenagers use social media to contact friends and family, their social media sites should be reviewed by parents, to include looking at the friends list and ensuring there are no strangers or unknown individuals with access to their pages. Parents should also look for changes

The Internet Crimes Against Children program was developed in response to the increasing number of children and teenagers using the internet and other technology, the proliferation of child sexual abuse images available electronically and the heightened online activity by predators seeking unsupervised contact with potential underage victims.

in the behavior of their children. These changes can vary from child to child. “Having open, honest conversations with your children is key to prevention of such crimes,” said Col. Christopher Ouellette, AFOSI 13th FIS commander. “Warning signs can include the child becoming secretive and obsessive about online activities and angry when they are unable to use the internet. They may also receive phone calls

and/or gifts from someone you do not know.” Parents can find resources for protecting their children at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s webpage, www.missingkids.com/home. Traffic impact on L369

Motorists must expect detours and delays along road L369 in the vicinity of Ramstein East Gate, specifically between the A6 traffic circle and Harmon Gate from 9 a.m. today to approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday. Due to construction, L369 will be completely closed in the vicinity of Harmon Gate from 9 a.m. today until 8 p.m. Sunday. This will mean that direct access to the east gate is only possible via Mackenbach Road. Access to Ramstein from the east — Einsiedlerhof-A6 intersection — via LVIS Gate will be possible from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Normal LVIS Gate hours will resume Monday. Road L369 will be open as a one-lane road with a temporary traffic light beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Access to the Ramstein East Gate via Mackenbach Road will continue unobstructed. This limited access may cause moderate to severe delays by the east gate. Team Ramstein leadership strongly recommends using the Ramstein West Gate or LVIS Gate whenever possible. While building the region’s new, premier military medical center near Ramstein, road work will be commonplace. Leadership will appreciate motorists’ patience and understanding.

Retirement briefing

The next retire in Germany briefing conducted by the 86th Airlift Wing Retiree Activities Office will be held at 10 a.m. July 28 in Bldg. 2120, room 102. To attend the briefing, sign up with the RAO by phone at 480-5486 or via email at 86aw.rao@us.af.mil.

Attention dog owners

Due to recent events, the Landstuhl police authorities want to stress that dog owners must ensure their dogs are walked on a leash within a city or community. Outside a city or community, a dog has to be put on a leash immediately when other people approach. There were complaints brought to the police, especially in the district Melkerei, that dogs are walked without a leash and dog feces are not removed. Dog owners must also make sure that public roads, paths, squares and parks are kept clean. Dog owners are responsible for the disposal of dog excrements. Dog owners who disregard regulations can be fined.

Engaging in visual-manual subtasks while driving, such as reaching for a phone, dialing and texting, associated with the use of hand-held phones and other portable devices increases the risk of getting into a crash by three times.

Ramstein Airman defends MILGRAPH award

Graphic by Senior Airman Damon Kasberg

by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It is only a small percentage of Airmen who, throughout their careers, are able to rise above their peers and achieve a Department of Defense-level award. The number drops even lower for Airmen who achieve this more than once. Senior Airman Damon Kasberg, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs photojournalist, accomplished this honor when he was awarded the Visual Information Awards Program Military Graphic Artist of the Year two years in a row. “I think it’s difficult just to win once, and to be able to do it two consecutive years is unbelievable,” Kasberg said. “There’s a lot of really talented service members, so to be able to represent the Air Force is such a good feeling.” On June 18, for the second time in as many years, Kasberg attended a ceremony in the District of Columbia with the winners of other VIAP categories to receive his award. “You get to be with the videographer and photographer of the year; it’s just a great environment,” Kasberg said. “Being around people who are considered the best in their career

field, it inspires you and makes you want to be that much better.” Tech. Sgt. Sara Keller, 86th AW Public Affairs NCO in charge of mission partner support and Kasberg’s supervisor, was able to join him for the ceremony the first time he won, as she was attending training in the same area. “It’s crazy how it all worked out, that I just happened to be in the same place at the same time,” Keller said. “I was able to attend with my Airman and watch people congratulate and look up to him. These people are the real deal, and they were impressed by Airman Kasberg. It was really humbling to see my Airman in that respect.” Judging for these competitions is broadcasted live, so Airmen who have submitted entries are able to follow along and see how their product is holding up against their peers. “The judges can be pretty critical on pieces, so it’s nerve-wracking to watch the whole process,” Kasberg said. “The big finale for the whole competition is the portfolios. And you see yours up there, and then they say, ‘In.’ Your heart keeps pumping because you know you’re going to the next round of judging. “I was watching it with a couple of my coworkers, and we were so

happy and nervous at the same time,” Kasberg continued. “I had made it to the next round. But there were still a couple other people with great portfolios, and it could go either way. When I found out, we just jumped up and down, super excited.” For Kasberg, the main goal of creating graphics isn’t for recognition or awards but to tell the message in the most effective way and to continue to grow and better himself in his skill. If a piece measures up to his own high standards, then he feels it may be worth submitting and see how others feel about it. “Anytime I make a product I try to set a bar for myself,” Kasberg said. “Is this something that I’m willing to put my name on and say that I am happy that I created this? When I say yes, then I feel it’s good enough for competition to see what the professionals think.” The judges showed what they thought of Kasberg’s work through the competition, and his coworkers and family feel the same. “He’s one of the most talented Airmen I’ve met in my entire life,” Keller said. “He puts so much work into everything he does. In every project, he follows it from each little detail to make sure everything is perfect.”

On the job and even at home, Kasberg pours all of his energy into a project. “He’s so passionate about it, and he’s willing to put in the hours,” said Staff Sgt. Nancy Kasberg, Kasberg’s wife and Armed Forces Network Kaiserslautern NCO in charge of news. “It’s insane how much this guy works for it.” She says he will often work on a graphic from the time he gets home until she goes to bed, and she may even wake up in the middle of the night to find him still working. The long hours and attention to detail may seem daunting to others, but to Kasberg, it is all worth it. “I love creating art; the whole process of it is so much fun,” Kasberg said. “Yeah, it takes a long time, and it can be draining. But the whole time I’m having fun creating that piece from start to finish. I love creating things, and to me, that’s what graphic art is all about.” Every Airman has the opportunity to find one thing they are passionate about and follow it to achieve their goals. Kasberg used his love for graphic arts to complete his mission, strengthen his skills and represent the Air Force as the best graphic artist the military has to offer for the last two years.

Blended retirement system training now available by Tech. Sgt. Bryan Franks Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information WASHINGTON — Online training designed to educate Airmen about the new Blended Retirement System, the Defense Department system with changes on the current military retirement system, is now available via Joint Knowledge Online course number P-US1330. The course is also available to those without a Common Access Card, to include family members, via an alternate website. The BRS was enacted into law in the Fiscal Year 2016 National Defense Authorization Act and will go into effect Jan. 1, 2018. All currently serving members are grandfathered into the current military retirement system. However, those with fewer than

12 years of service as of Dec. 31, 2017, or Air Force Reserve component members with fewer than 4,320 retirement points may choose to opt in to the BRS during the designated optin period from Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2018. “The BRS is a major change for our Airmen,” said Brig. Gen. Brian Kelly, Military Force Management Policy director. “Although the majority of Airmen serving today will not fall under BRS, it is important for all Airmen, either as leaders today or as leaders tomorrow, to understand the changes that will impact Airmen in the future.” The BRS Leader Training is a 30-minute course designed to provide basic familiarity with the key components of the upcoming retirement system and the timeline for implementation. It is designed primarily for Air

Force leaders at all levels but is also open to all Airmen and others who wish to learn more about BRS. “Education is key in providing Airmen the information they need in order to make informed decisions about the BRS,” Kelly said. The Defense Department is on track to provide three additional courses with more detailed information within the next 18 months. An opt-in course is targeted at those eligible to opt in to the new system. This course will provide eligible active and reserve component members an understanding of both the current and new systems. The course will be available in January 2017. A “train the trainer” course for personal financial managers, counselors and retirement services officers is targeted at those experts who serve in an advisory role to commanders, Airmen

and their families. This course should be ready by fall of 2016. A new accessions course targets individuals who enter military service on or after Jan. 1, 2018. It is intended to provide those members who enter service under the BRS an understanding of their blended retirement benefits and personal options. The Air Force is taking a comprehensive approach to BRS education. “Online courses are designed to provide basic knowledge and understanding,” Kelly emphasized. “In addition to the aforementioned courses, Airmen will receive in-person education at various points in their career, starting in basic training, and professional counseling will also be available.” To learn more about the Blended Retirement System, visit http://militarypay.defense.gov.

1st CBCS seamlessly transitions communications infrastructure

Airmen from the 1st Combat Communications Squadron prepare equipment in Africa. The Airmen replaced pallets of communications equipment for transportation as another squadron replaced the 1st CBCS. This was the first time an entire combat communications team and equipment were switched out.

by Staff Sgt. Armando Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A group of ambitious and innovative Airmen from the 1st Combat Communications Squadron recently completed a mission that has never been accomplished by the totalforce combat communications community. In less than 48 hours, this team of specialists came into a small base in Africa and seamlessly replaced an entire communications infrastructure with absolutely no interruption to operations — no planes grounded, no missions postponed, not even a missed phone call.

During this transition, the base’s airfield, command and control capabilities, telecommunications system and basically everything that keeps the base’s mission going was swapped out. Although most combat units replace each other in deployed locations in this manner, the 1st CBCS and the 52th Combat Communications Squadron were the first combat communications squadrons to do it with such speed and lack of mission impact. However, Tech. Sgt. Marcus Smith, 1st CBCS described it a bit differently. “It’s like someone came and replaced all the electronics in the middle of the night, optimized your network and

took the old equipment to be refurbished,” Smith said. “You would notice a new computer, but all your favorite games and videos are still there. And a new phone and SIM card charging, but all your contacts are still there.” The 1st CBCS, part of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing out of Ramstein, provides or establishes communication networks all around Europe and Africa. This event freed up equipment and manpower allowing the 1st CBCS to build up other sites in their area of operation. The 1st CBCS moved out seven pallets of communication equipment then switched it over to have the 52nd CBCS’s system. During one part of the mission, they completed what an unexperienced team would accomplish in one hour in only seven minutes. “This effort proved that the Air Force can meet the long-term needs of deployed joint-force commanders while retaining our tactical footprint,” said Lt. Col. Douglas Shahan, 1st CBCS commander. “The team also validated that we can rotate combat comm deployable packages just like other weapon systems, which ensures the overall health of the community and readiness of the deployed force.” This was a huge success

for the 1st CBCS, said Senior Master Sgt. Hector Garcia, 1st CBCS team lead. The team and process they used has created options for the Air Force to deploy total-force Airmen in a new way anytime, anywhere. “I’m proud to contribute in a small way to the many successes by the people in this unit,” Garcia said. “There’s no other unit like the 1st

(CBCS), and at this point in my career, there’s no place I’d rather be. My team of subject matter experts performed flawlessly, and our cutover went even better than any of us expected.” The equipment and personnel the 1st CBCS replaced did not disappear. It merely went home and rearmed, resupplied and readied itself for a new adventure in Africa or Europe.

ments of the 7th Mission Support Command. Each of the three brigades performed separate critical functions for the exercise and conducted cooperative training efforts with partners from other participating nations. The 30th Med. Bde. provided both real-world and training medical support to multiple events throughout the exercise, including a multinational jump that was part of Swift Response ’16, a related exercise. Additionally, the 30th Med. Bde. organized and oversaw a masscasualty simulation that brought together the medics of both the active and reserve components of the U.S. Army as well as partner nation medical services. training exercise June 12 to 22. “This exercise is important because it’s a lot harder to get this type of training in Germany,” said Capt. Doug Mabe, SbS16 C-130J mission commander. “The air space is more restrictive, and we have tighter timelines that we have to meet. We can also fly lower and to more locations here than in Germany. “It’s a great chance to explore new training opportunities with our NATO allies and build bilateral partnerships with our Army brethren,” Mabe continued. These exercises usually go seamlessly for the team, but that is due to extensive preparation and planning involving many moving parts. “We’re not at home station, so we have to bring everything that we need with us,” Mabe said. “This ranges from maintenance support to weather and intelligence.” According to Senior Airman Sarah Meadows, 37th AS loadmaster, this training not only allows them to hone their skills but also brings them closer as a unit. “It is rewarding to see how well we interact and operate with our NATO allies,” Meadows said. “Seeing how seamlessly the exercise is going is pretty satisfying. Also, camaraderie is at an all time high while participating in these forward-training deployments, as you get to bond and work with the same crew for a few weeks at a time and build trust with crew members you may not work with very often.” Flying training deployments are a great opportunity for younger Airmen to grow with exposure to these types of exercises, Mabe explained. “Seeing new and younger aircrew get a chance to develop their skill set and train in challenging environments versus back home where it can be the same things over and over is the most rewarding part for me personally,” Mabe said. “It’s great to see new people come out and challenge themselves and learn new things.” This Ramstein team has a significant role in the U.S. Air Force’s forward presence in Europe, allowing work with allies to develop and improve capabilities of maintaining regional security.

Proper recycling in KMC housing areas by John Ahern 786th Civil Engineer Squadron

If you live on Ramstein, Vogelweh or Landstuhl military housing, you should have received three wheeled bins, a roll of yellow bags and a sheet of paper describing what goes into each bin along with the contractor

pickup schedule. Below is a recap of what goes into each of the bins and when you can expect it to be picked up over the next few weeks. The brown bin is for biodegradable waste. Bio waste includes food scraps, to include meat and fish bones; coffee grounds; and compostable yard waste. Do not put animal feces or medi-

cal waste items in the bio bin. The bio bin is picked up every week during the warmer months, May through November, and every other week in the winter. To help prevent it from generating odors, you can put newspaper in the bottom or use paper bags to keep the sticky household waste from sticking to the inside of your bin.

It is important to note, commissary plastic bags cannot be used in the bio bin. The yellow bags are for your lightweight recyclables, such as milk cartons, plastic drink bottles, aluminum or tin cans, Styrofoam packaging, yogurt containers, wrappers from commissary meat products, etc. Almost anything recyclable, besides paper or

glass, goes in this bin. These bags are picked up every other week and are likely to be your most used item. You are not limited by number of yellow bags, so you can have as many as needed to handle your light recyclables. Additional yellow bags are available at the housing selfhelp store. The blue bin is for all paper and cardboard but not wax-coated paper, that goes in the yellow bag. This bin is picked up every four weeks, and the next pickup is July 13. Cardboard boxes can be broken down and put next to the blue bin on pickup day if they don’t fit in the bin. Lastly, the black bin is your trash bin and should be for everything that can’t be recycled and is not hazardous, including medical, waste. For many, most of the items in this container will be pet litter or diapers. This bin is picked up every other week, and the next pickup is scheduled for Wednesday. Although it may seem overwhelming at first, the separation is similar to what off-base residents comply with and what we’ve been expected to do in the underground dumpsters; now it’s just at your home. Recycling properly will save the Air Force a significant amount of funds in our refuse collection. For glass recycling, nothing has changed. One final reminder, on pickup day, the respective container should be placed curbside in front of your house no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before pickup or no later than 6 a.m. the morning of pickup with the lid shut — the truck cannot pick up overfilled containers — and put them away by 7 p.m. the day of pickup. If you need a copy of the schedule, they are available at the self-help store near where you pick up your yellow bags. Remember to be consistent with German law. If trash is put in the wrong container, the contractor will not pick it up, but they will provide a note of what was wrong so it’s easy to fix for the next pickup.

casualty event helped the participants develop their ability to work across language barriers and other interoperability challenges to provide first-rate emergency medical care in catastrophic situations. The 18th MP Bde. provided force protection as well as convoy escort for forces moving to and from the exercise, assisting with convoys stretching across multiple locations in Germany and Poland. Working hand in hand with partner military police forces in the Bulgarian army and other participating nations, the 18th MP Bde. was also critical to the execution of a major river crossing and forward passage of lines. These two events not only trained the forces to work well together in such endeavors, but they also served as a signal that the U.S. Army’s focus in Europe is returning to more traditional, decisive action-oriented training. The 16th Sust. Bde., U.S. Army in Europe’s only sustainment brigade, provided a wide variety of logistics to multiple locations in Poland for the exercise. Deploying long before the official start of the exercise, much of the 16th Sust. Bde.’s efforts revolved around supporting the movement into and out of Poland for more than 10,000 U.S. participants. With movement control teams overseeing the movement of equipment and vehicles and a transportation company providing long distance line haul transportation, the brigade was critical to the successful start of the exercise. Other services provided by the brigade included fuel support, water purification and other life-support and -sustainment functions. One of the key factors for the 16th Sust. Bde. was the geographical disbursement of forces in the exercise. According to Col. Michelle Letcher, 16th Sust. Bde. commander, this challenged the brigade to maximize its operational reach, or ability to operate across long distances and in geographically remote areas. “It’s a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity to see how far we can stretch our organization to support our allies,” Letcher said. “Whether you’re pumping fuel, driving a truck or firing a weapon, your goal is to provide stability and security, and that’s what we did.” In providing sustainment services to this multinational exercise, the TSC partnered with the 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, a U.S.-based reserve unit. The integration of both active-duty European-based forces and U.S.based reserve components in support of rotational forces served as a validation of sorts for the regionally aligned forces concept USAREUR has moved to in recent years. “It was the total Army in Europe leading an effort, establishing a baseline for how to do future operations in Europe,” said Brig. Gen. Arlan DeBlieck, who serves not only as the commanding general of the 7th MSC, the U.S. Army’s largest forward-based reserve component unit, but also as the deputy commanding general of the 21st TSC. “All the components were heavily involved and were doing a superb job.”

TODAY: Dark Beer Marinated

Pork Steaks Ingredients for 4 people 4 nice pork steaks from the neck (Schweinenacken steaks) 4 medium sized onions, peeled and cut in half rings 1 bottle of dark German beer 1 teaspoon tomato paste 1 tablespoon margarine 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 teaspoons salt Salt and pepper the steaks. Cover all the pork steaks with beer so that they are completely immersed. They need to marinate 3 days in the refrigerator. In a large skillet, melt the margarine and roast the steaks on both sides. Remove steaks

and put sliced onions in pan. Slightly roast on medium heat until they have a nice brown color. Add tomato paste. Stir it until it becomes a nice brown color as well. Add half of the beer marinade. Return steaks to the pan. Let them simmer for 8-10 minutes. As sauce cooks down, add more marinade. Season with pepper and salt to suit your own taste. Nice side dishes are roasted potatoes with thick cut onions and bacon, or a typical German Krautsalat (coleslaw). This can be purchased on the economy. Of course adding another dark beer for your beverage will enhance the flavor of the pork steak.

The mining village of Imsbach, delightfully set in the foothills of Donnersberg mountain, was shaped in its development throughout the centuries by the naturally occurring resources in the ground. In the two exhibition mines White Pit and Maria and in the Palatine Mining Museum, visitors can experience the local mining tradition and follow in the footsteps of former miners. To make the Mining World Imsbach attractive for the many fellow Americans in this region, mine tours in English have been an integral part of the annual program for several years. In addition to this, a guided hike held in English will be offered for the first time on Sunday. The hiking tour will lead participants through the Imsbach mining district on the iron trail to the mine Maria and deals thematically with the emergence of ore veins and the excavation of iron ores. The picturesque route runs along narrow, sometimes-steep paths and tracks up to striking cliffs that offer magnificent views. The tour concludes with a guided tour in English of the mine Maria. Its tunnels and

shafts offer impressive insights into the hard work underground. Today, hikers can take a rest stop at the mining cabin and relax from the exertion. The hike starts at 11 a.m. at the mining cabin entrance of the White Pit, or “Weisse Grube,” in 67817 Imsbach. The distance is approximately 5.5 km. Parking is available at the hikers parking lot in Langenthal. Organizers recommend to wear ankle-supporting footwear and bring food in a backpack. Participation in the tour and the entrance to the visitor mine Maria costs €5 for adults and €3 for children. A visit to the Palatine Mining Museum, which is included in fee, in the town center is also worthwhile and is open until 5 p.m. Sunday. Preregistration for the guided hike is requested but not required. Contact the Winnweiler Tourist Office, Jakobstrasse 29, 67722 Winnweiler, at 06302-602-61 or email info@ winnweiler-vg.de.
