Polsinelli takes command of 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing welcomed Col. Angela M. Polsinelli as its 10th commander during a Change of Command ceremony June 26, at Ramstein Air Base.

During the ceremony, Col. Jordan P. Norman relinquished command of the 521st AMOW to Polsinelli, symbolizing the formal transfer of authority and responsibility.

Maj. Gen. Darren Cole, TwentyFirst Air Force and U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander, presided over the ceremony, emphasizing the wing’s critical role in synchronizing air mobility operations across four combatant commands.

“You took that complex mission set and elevated it to a flexible power projection platform that has earned back-to-back Meritorious Units Awards,” Cole said, addressing Norman. “You didn’t just meet expectations, you shattered them.”

Ramstein recognizes decades of dedication at length of service ceremony

During Norman’s tenure, the wing moved 418,000 passengers and 200,000 tons of cargo in support of more than 49,000 missions across the U.S. European, U.S. African and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility.

“Numbers don’t move cargo, statistics don’t fix airplanes and metrics don’t save lives – Airmen do,” Norman said. “I want to focus on the Airmen of the 521st AMOW and their herculean efforts over the last two years to keep the lifeblood of American airpower flowing.”

Under Norman’s command, the wing overcame a 200 percent operational surge while supporting major combat, contingency and humanitarian operations. Those efforts included Operation Enduring Welcome, Operation Midnight Hammer, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Epic Fury, the first time in AMOW history the wing was assigned aircraft.

“Colonel Polsinelli, as I look at this formation, I’m filled with absolute confidence,” Norman said. “These Airmen are battle tested. I know that you will lead them with passion and they’ll move mountains for you, as they have for me.”

Echoing Norman’s confidence, Cole pointed to Polsinelli’s extensive operational, command and staff experience, describing her as uniquely prepared to assume command of the 521st AMOW.

“It’s natural for all of us as followers to wonder about the resume of our leaders,” Cole said. “I guarantee you, she is our best.”

Previously, Polsinelli commanded the 621st Air Mobility Advisory Group at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. There, she oversaw five squadrons across 21 operating locations that fulfilled global

taskings as U.S. Air Force Air Advisors, Air Mobility Liaison Officers and Air Mobility Operations experts.

“I’ve been watching you from afar in the global air mobility support system enterprise for the past few years,” Polsinelli said. “I’ve seen you excel beyond all expectations, accelerating the rapid global mobility that our nation relies on.”

Polsinelli will oversee two groups, eight squadrons and 16 locations across 13 countries spanning more than 5,000 miles, providing the command and control that underpins the global air mobility support system.

“I’m thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to command such a hardworking and talented group of Airmen,” Polsinelli said. “Your efforts are always at the forefront of operations and the joint force truly depends on you.”

Weapon-free zone –Kaiserslautern inner city area

On May 28, the Kaiserslautern inner city area was declared a weapon-free zone. It is now illegal to carry any knives or other weapons within the designated area. Police now have the authority to carry out searches of people and their belongings without probable cause within the weapon-free zone. This move comes as a response to a fatal stabbing near the mall in February of this year.

US Army Medical Department Activity Bavaria Soldiers train with Bundeswehr Special Operations Medics on Emergency Medicine skills

Two U.S. Army Combat Medics assigned to U.S. Army Medical Department Activity Bavaria participated in Emergency Room focused training alongside German Army Special Operations medics at the RKH Simulation Center in Vaihingen an der Enz, Germany June 8 - 12.

Taking part in the intense weeklong training was Sgt. 1st Class Byron Taylor and Staff Sgt. Caleb Scibbe. Both Soldiers are 68W Combat Medics - Scibbe is assigned to the U.S. Army Health Clinic Ansbach and Taylor is assigned to U.S. Army Health Clinic Stuttgart.

“My biggest takeaway from the training was witnessing the significant effort both nations have invested in medical interoperability,” said Sgt. 1st Class Taylor. “This shared commitment ensures we can operate effectively as a combined joint medical team, which ultimately translates to saving lives.”

This was not Taylor’s first-time training with Bundeswehr medics. His initial training interaction with German medics was more than 7 years ago while stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

“I wanted to attend the training and work with my German counterparts to see how practices and execution of medical care have changed for them over the last seven to ten years,” added Taylor. “I was lucky enough to be stationed in Landstuhl earlier in my career and had the pleasure of participating in several training events with the German Bundeswehr. Getting another chance to integrate with them early in my current tour was an opportunity I simply could not pass up.”

Training with the Bundeswehr provided a unique opportunity for the U.S. Soldiers to learn how their counterparts approach emergency medicine and the techniques they use.

“I volunteered for this training because it provided opportunities to improve communication and team working skills with our Bundeswehr counterparts,” said Staff Sgt. Scibbe, primary care non-commissioned officer in charge at the Stuttgart Army Health Clinic. “I am always excited to practice my emergency medical skills and learn new things, especially from those who have more advanced skills than me.”

The advanced level training focused on emergency skills that included, but were not limited to, wound packing, pressure bandages, pelvic binders, airway adjuncts, noncommu-

nicable diseases and chest seals, etc.

“We were able to practice endotracheal intubation in both rapid and delayed sequence intubation,” added Scibbe. “This was one of my favorite parts as this skill is not typically within the normal medic’s scope of practice until you are higher in rank.”

According to German medical officials, much of the training involved non-combat related trauma and medicine that is grounded in real life experiences of trauma and emergency medicine doctors around the world.

“We also performed wound cleaning and management, septic and hypovolemic shock management, damage control resuscitation protocols, and chest tubes,” Scibbe added.

“In addition, we also had the opportunity to practice advanced cardiac life support and (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma) ultrasound imaging exams.”

According to senior Army medical officials, advanced life-saving skills are critical for combat medics because they directly determine whether casualties survive the “golden hour” — the first 60 minutes after injury when prompt, effective care is most likely to save lives.

“It was an incredible experience working with our Bundeswehr partners,” added Scibbe. “Having worked with Bundeswehr Soldiers several times before, every time is an absolute honor and very beneficial. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that we can learn from. It was also a great opportunity for them to practice their English. As we look at preparing for potential future large scale combat operations, this type of interoperability with our Bundeswehr and other NATO partners is critical.”

“Overall, it was a great event, and I would

love to do it again,” said Scibbe. “I would recommend this training to anyone if it becomes available to them. Working with our partner nations is a unique and rewarding experience and one that I will never forget.”

The RKH Simulation Centre is a state-ofthe-art training and further education institution for medical specialists and assistants of all disciplines. The RKH simulation center offers all professional groups involved in the medical process a comprehensive range of state-of-theart patient simulators. The RKH Simulation Center uses a formerly fully functional operating room and covers 1,000 square meters.

“The Bundeswehr Special Operations medics were exceptional and open to learning from all sources,” added Taylor. “I will gladly seek out future opportunities for myself and my Soldiers to participate in this caliber of joint training.”

Two Miles Ahead of the Curve: 86 MXO Airman embraces new fitness standards

The Air Force’s updated fitness assessment is prompting Airmen across the force to take a closer look at their physical readiness. With the newly required 2-mile run and the return of waist measurements, many are adjusting their routines, setting new goals and finding ways to prepare for the changes ahead.

For Airman 1st Class Baldermar Campos, 86th Maintenance Operations maintenance scheduler, it was a moment to selfreflect and face the habits he’d been ignoring for far too long.

“When I first heard about the changes, I was scared,” he said. “At first they were just talking about it. Then I realized it’s really going to happen and it’s not gonna go away. I need to get off my butt, stop eating junk food and push myself to lose weight.”

Three months ago, Campos weighed 217 pounds. At the time, he recognized that improving his fitness would require more than a simple short-term effort.

After months of sheer discipline and a strict workout routine, Campos has lost 30 pounds.

“One of my NCOs was like, can Campos even still fit into his MOPP gear?” he said. “He wasn’t doing it rudely, he was genuinely asking. That was the moment I was like, ‘Dang. I need to be better.’”

Every weekday for Campos starts off the same. He wakes up at 5:30 a.m. and heads to the gym. He spends roughly 40 minutes running and follows it with weight training before reporting to work.

The physical changes to his body are easy enough to see, however, the reasons behind his motivation weren’t for weight loss alone.

Campo’s journey throughout his Air Force career has been set by the familiar tones of humility and accountability.

“Two and a half years ago, I lost two stripes,” Campos said. “I went to a very dark and isolated place, watching all my peers progress and move forward. I started to neglect my health and started over-eating and drinking, all the things I shouldn’t have been doing.”

As the weight started to come off, other changes inside of his mind followed. After taking a hard look in the mirror at himself and his behaviors, he began reading more and became more intentional with his time. He’s also invested more of himself towards the mentorship programs and professional development initiatives.

Today, Campos serves as his unit’s booster club president, leads professional development efforts for the KMC First Four, helps physically train other members of his unit, and manages Wings of Wisdom, a mentorship initiative he founded after realizing how much guidance he lacked early in his Air Force career.

“I’m so glad I did because it helped me fix a lot of things in my life,” Campos said.

While the changes Campos has experienced are moving and deeply personal, he is not alone in his efforts to better himself, especially with the new standards being fully enforced come July.

Senior Airman Jurquis Jones,

an 86th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist assigned to the Ramstein Fitness Assessment Cell, said he has seen an increase in Airmen preparing for the updated standards.

“Over the last few months, we are seeing fewer Airmen strictly lifting weights and now seeing these Airmen incorporating sustained cardio and functional fitness into their routines,” Jones said. “There also has been a spike in people asking for structured running programs rather than “winging it.’”

For Airmen waiting until the last minute to prepare, Jones offered a simple warning.

“Do not wait until a month out to start taking this seriously,” Jones said. “Consistency always beats intensity. You cannot cram for cardiovascular endurance. It takes time to build. Start small, get out on the track a couple of days a week to build the habit. Your future self will thank you when test day feels like another routine workout.”

Campos has firsthand experience that preparation extends beyond a single assessment. For him, preparing for these updated PT changes became more than meeting requirements. It was an opportunity to rebuild healthy habits, regain confidence and holistically improve himself. Campos' fitness journey reflects the increasing efforts of Airmen across Ramstein, and across the force, to adapt to the updated fitness standards, one step at a time.

“The first step is always the hardest,” Campos said. “As soon as you take that first step, the next step is even easier.”

Every year, numerous wine dignitaries, such as the Zellertaler Wine Princess or the Palatinate Wine Queen, travel to the wine fair in Einselthum. Throughout the weekend, visitors to the wine fair are treated to fine wines and culinary specialties at winemakers’ estates. Live music is played as well. Narrow paths, historic narrow streets, and romantic squares invite visitors to linger over the four days of the festival. There’s also plenty to discover in the town’s inns and wine taverns. THE FASCINATION OF SPACE

On July 18, the museum welcomes NASA astronaut Kathryn Thornton. She will talk about her four missions with the space shuttles discovery, Endeavour and Columbia at the Forum cinema. Her reports are characterized by scientific fascination, team spirit, and the unique moments that only a stay in space can offer. The speech is in English. Afterwards, she will answer questions from visitors. Children up to 14 can take a souvenir photo with her. On Aug. 8 astronaut Mark Lee will make a showing and also give a speech.

A change of view

Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored many facets of Kaiserslautern’s past, emperors and kings, market and city rights, wars, cycles of destruction and rebuilding, and an American presence spanning eight decades, all of which helped shape the city and its surroundings.

History, however, isn’t one-way: Today we’ll flip the perspective and examine how the people of Kaiserslautern and the surrounding region have also helped shape the history and identity of the United States.

The Institut für Pfälzische Geschichte und Volkskunde (IPGV), Institute for Palatinate History and Ethnology, is based in Kaiserslautern and has records of about 300,000 emigrants from the region who emigrated from 1650 onwards, mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Crossing the seas

The Palatinate emigration was primarily driven by a quest for religious freedom, economic opportunity, and escape from political turmoil. Some emigrants went to South America, Africa and even Australia in later years, but the majority fled to America, such as religious minorities, including Mennonites, Amish, and various Protestant groups that sought refuge from persecution. Additionally, economic hardships, such as crop failures and oppressive taxation, pushed many to seek better prospects abroad. They tended to choose regions with climates and

landscapes that felt familiar, such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, and parts of New York.

Once in America, many settled in rural areas, establishing tightknit farming communities that retained elements of their German heritage and language or local dialect. The Palatinate, or Pfälzisch, dialect is a mixture of Middle High German (spoken in the Middle Ages), French and Dutch influence, and local peculiarities.

Pennsylvania Deitsch

One of the legacies of the Palatinate emigration is the preservation of the Pennsylvania German dialect, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania Deitsh.

This distinctive language continues to be spoken by descendants of Palatinate immigrants in pockets of Pennsylvania and beyond. While its usage has declined over the years, there are efforts to preserve and promote Pennsylvania German culture persist through language classes, cultural events, and heritage organizations.

As an example, a Pfälzer in the region might say (also in variations) “Isch hann, isch hunn, isch hab e Grumbeersagg” (German: Ich habe einen Kartoffelsack). A speaker of Pennsylvania Deitsh would probably understand that the speaker has a potato sack. The Amish tradition of Rumspringa, where adolescents gain permission to venture out and experience greater society, derives from the German verb (he)rumspringen, meaning to jump around.

Popular dishes such as Pfälzer Saumagen (stuffed pig stomach), Latwersch (plum jam), Grummbeersupp (potato soup),

Dampnurrle (steamed dumplings), Brodwerscht (bratwurst) and traditional tasty baked goods are commonly still prepared there today. Many small towns celebrate German or Palatinate festivals throughout the year to keep traditions alive and young people interested in their roots take classes to (re)learn the dialect and popular songs.

The small community of Kutztown in eastern Pennsylvania, also known as Kutzeschteddel, with its 4,100 inhabitants, is famous for its annual festival. The nine-day event that is scheduled to start on July 4 this year, draws visitors from around the world and is the oldest continuous folklife festival in the United States. Visitors can experience insight into traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch, see talented craftsmen weaving baskets, carpenters and blacksmiths demonstrating traditional skills, enjoy typical music and taste delicious baked goods, sausages and wines.

Many of the emigrants from the Palatinate maintained their homeland dialect and held close ties to their relatives at home. A newspaper called “Der Pfälzer in Amerika” was founded in New York in 1880 by the brothers Voelcker from Edenkoben. The paper was intended to keep immigrants informed about their homeland from 1884 to 1917. Original copies of the newspaper are kept at the IPGV archives. Another paper entitled “Hiwwe wie driwwe” was established in the 1990s and published in Palatinate dialect. In addition, the County of Kaiserslautern has enjoyed close ties to Lancaster County,

Pennsylvania for sixty years.

Influencers of the days

The Palatinate emigration produced several notable individuals, such as Johann Jacob Zimmerman, a skilled artisan and architect credited with designing iconic Pennsylvania Germanstyle barns and homes. Peter Muhlenberg, a clergyman and military leader, played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, rallying his fellow Palatinate immigrants to the cause of independence. Conrad Weiser, a diplomat and interpreter, facilitated peaceful relations between colonists and Native American tribes.

Isidor Straus from Otterberg served as a congressman and became co-owner of Macy’s Department Store in New York City. Thomas Nast, born in Landau, arrived with his family at the age of six and became one of the most influential political cartoonists of the 19th century. He is best known for his depictions of the Republican Party elephant and the Democratic Party donkey. Nast’s keen eye for social justice also found expression in his powerful portrayals of issues such as slavery, corruption, and civil rights, earning him widespread acclaim and he is famous for creating a drawing of “Santa Claus,” based on the Protestant character of “Belznickel,” later instrumentalized and colored in red by the Coca Cola Company.

Music makes the world go round

In addition, scores of adventurous musicians from the “Musikantenland” in the region set sail to the New World to

seek their fortunes and founded their own orchestras. Ensembles such as the “Mackenbacher Wandermusikanten” were rather popular in areas with high German descendent populations. Some of the wandering musicians returned to their hometown, but some stayed and even became famous throughout America. Heinrich Jacob from Mackenbach was one of these musicians who emigrated to New York and was successful under his artist name “Bill Henry” and his band called “Headliners.” Karl Schirra from Miesenbach played in ensembles in Boston, Brooklyn and Philadelphia after World War I.

Tracing your roots

There are various rather German sounding last names in the global email system, such as Obermark, Wunderlich, Schenck, Meyer and Weber as a few examples. So, if you are certain, or have the feeling that you may be a descendent of a Palatinate immigrant, you can contact the IPGV. It is currently enlarging its database to simplify research for those interested in tracing their roots. Escape, Evasion & Remembrance March

On June 5 and 6 the IG Heimatforschung Rheinland-Pfalz staged the second 100-km/24-hour Escape, Evasion & Remembrance March from Waldsee, Germany to Hatten, France. Dozens of participants from across Europe and the United States, military veterans and determined civilians alike, gathered to honor the victims of World War II through a demanding, commemorative endurance event.

After a brief address by Waldsee’s mayor Claudia Klein, who also ran the march, twelve white doves were released as a symbol of international understanding.

Organizer Erik Wieman then outlined the scenario: a wartime plane crash, parachute landings behind enemy lines, and an arduous route to the American lines at Hatten. Participants would face simulated minefields, water crossings, blocked routes,

and team tasks designed to recreate the confusion, deprivation, and teamwork of wartime escape and evasion.

Four parachutists jumped to start the scenario, and a historic warbird flew overhead. A minute of silence honored all war victims before the march began.

The first 50 kilometers pushed participants across terrain marked by Allied and German memorials, bunkers, and tank barriers. Night marching followed, with reenactors blocking bridges and forcing detours. At Steinfeld, competitors crossed a tank ditch using single-person inflatable survival rafts while lifeguards from the DLRG stood by.

Around kilometer 82 teams found a “shot - down American pilot” suspended in a tree - a 50-kg training dummy in period uniform. The task required hiding the parachute and transporting the injured figure toward the American lines on a provisional stretcher. At kilometer 83 the

border river had to be crossed on a double rope bridge while carrying the dummy, which even bore an original WWII dog tag.

U.S. Army reenactors greeted participants on the German side; French Résistance actors awaited them on the French bank and issued the password for the American lines: Ghost. The counter password was Raven, a final test after a day and night without sleep.

The American lines at Hatten were represented by trenches and barriers near Casemate Esch, the site of fierce 1945 fighting.

The first finisher, a German police officer, completed the 100 km in 18 hours 25 minutes. In total 34 participants reached the finish; many others dropped out along

the way. Volunteers, paramedics, and doctors provided continuous care, and there were no serious or lasting injuries.

At the finish the deputy mayor of Hatten awarded medals and certificates. A short reenactment followed in which German performers and an armored reconnaissance vehicle attacked the U.S. position and were repelled. The event closed on a symbolic note: sharing a beer together is better than shooting at each other.

The march combined intense physical challenge with historical remembrance, deliberately exposing participants to disorientation, hardship, and cooperative problem solving. It honored those rescued and those lost, while fostering international understanding through shared effort.

Organizer Erik Wieman summarized the event: this march is unique — an athletic, historical, and international form of remembrance — and he hopes many nations will return for the next edition in 2027.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, German first responders train for joint emergency response

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz emergency response teams partnered with German first responders for an Integrated Protection Exercise to test joint emergency response capabilities at the Baumholder Airfield near Reichenbach June 10.

The exercise featured a complex mass casualty scenario to test interoperability between U.S. Army law enforcement, fire and medical personnel, and their German hostnation counterparts. The scenario simulated a vehicle plowing into a crowd, injuring several people during an event at the airfield. The vehicle then collided with another car, trapping one person inside.

The Baumholder Disaster Response Unit, German Red Cross, Baumholder Fire Department and local Polizei led the onground response efforts. Since first responders were already on-site at the fictional event, they intervened immediately. Together, they subdued the driver, secured the scene and provided initial medical care while calling for additional support.

Additional German emergency responders, including the Reichenbach and Baumholder fire departments, arrived on scene shortly after. Emergency response leadership set up a joint command center in the airfield hangar to ensure full coordination and cooperation for a seamless response. Lukas Klein, Birkenfeld District fire and disaster protection inspector, took charge of the rescue operation.

During the exercise, first responders

navigated an intense environment, with 13 on-scene actors providing realism through simulated injuries. Crews worked together to extract a trapped vehicle passenger while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team managed a secondary threat – a simulated improvised explosive device disguised as a gym bag.

After about two hours, the exercise concluded with a joint debriefing.

“It was an excellent exercise to familiarize us with our partners’ capabilities,” summarized USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Police Chief Richard Robinson.

Chief Inspector Rouven Hebel of the Baumholder Police Station emphasized the importance of joint exercises.

“There are different ways of handling dangerous situations,” he said. “That is precisely why such exercises are very important.”

The exercise was also a success for the emergency medical services and fire departments.

Lukas Klein, Birkenfeld District fire and disaster protection inspector, was in charge of the rescue operation.

“We fully achieved our goal of testing our operational readiness while simultaneously improving our communication,” he said, adding that he hopes cooperation with U.S. partners can be further expanded in the future.

The large-scale effort required several months of planning and coordination across nine different organizations.

Meet USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Military Youth of the Year

A student with U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Youth Services recently earned the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America 2026 Northeast Military Youth of the Year. The award, which comes with a $20,000 college scholarship, recognizes outstanding academic achievements, academic potential and commitment to community service.

Three years ago, Patrick AkarDonkor, military teen and student at Baumholder Middle High School, moved from Ghana to Germany. He embraced the challenges of a new country and a unique military lifestyle instead of letting them overwhelm him.

The garrison’s Public Affairs Office recently spoke to Patrick to chat about his journey, the people who supported him along the way and what it means to be the 2026 Youth of the Year.

Q: First off, congratulations on being named the 2026 Northeast Military Youth of the Year! Do you remember exactly where you were or what you were doing when you found out you won?

A: Thank you! The event was held at Major League Baseball headquarters in New York City, and I had the chance to meet the CEO of BGCA, Mr. Jim Clark. All four finalists gave their speeches, and afterward I sat with the Chief Baseball Development Officer Tony Reagins, when he announced that I had been selected as the 2026 Northeast Military Youth of the Year. I was very honored to be chosen, and it was an exciting moment for me. Afterward, we celebrated, took photos and headed back to the hotel for a pizza party.

Q: Moving from Ghana to Germany in 2023 must have been a massive transition. How did the Baumholder Youth Services program help you find your footing and build a community in a brand-new country?

A: The Baumholder Teen Center was where I was able to make friends and connect with people, which was very important in dealing all the change. There were staff members like Mr. Ryan and Mrs. Jacque that I could talk to about anything, and they helped me adapt to my new school and military community. At the teen center, I was able to learn and make connections, which shaped me into the youth leader that I am today.

Q: You helped bring back the European Keystone Summit for the first time in over a decade. What was it like bringing military youth together from all over the region?

A: Yes, that is one of my favorite accomplishments in Keystone! It’s very important for teens to be able to connect with one another, especially in military communities. Most Keystone clubs in Europe are unable to attend the National Keystone Conference in the United States, so it was important for us to bring that experience here. We offered activities through the Red Cross, cooking clubs, sports programs, gift wrapping with the Baumholder Spouses Club Angel Tree program and many other opportunities, all completely free. Our “little” event even inspired BGCA to come to Europe and organize an official Europe Keystone Conference in Germany this November in Garmisch. It will be open to Keystone clubs across the region, and I’m honored to have been part of the team that helped make it possible.

Q: It’s impressive reading about your accomplishments! You’ve logged more than 200 volunteer hours, maintained a 3.8 grade point average, played sports, served in student government and acted as the vice president of the robotics club.

I’m very fortunate to be part of such a close-knit community because it provides so many opportunities for teens. When you’re surrounded by opportunities and by youth leaders who inspire you, you’re motivated to stay involved and keep trying to be better. The BMC and BGCA have given me so much, and that’s why I believe it’s important to give back through volunteering.

Q: Looking back at your time here so far, what has been your favorite memory of living in the Baumholder Military Community?

Q: You’re planning to study sports business or sports management in college. If you could pick your dream job in sports leadership, what would it be?

A: I am very passionate about sports, and my dream job would be to become the sports director of Manchester United Football Club. Right now, I haven’t committed to a college yet and am still exploring my options. The University of New Mexico and the University of North Texas are among my top choices.

How do you balance all these moving parts, and what drives you to stay so heavily involved?

A: When people ask how I maintain my GPA while staying involved in sports, school and the Teen Center, I think it really comes down to having a com-

Explosive ordnance disposal Airmen assigned to the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron hosted Operation Deterrent Viking II at Baumholder Military Training Area, May 3–8. Operation Deterrent Viking brought together over 50 EOD technicians, strengthening EOD capabilities, from units across Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye; Spangdahlem Air Base; Aviano Air Base, Italy; Cape Canaveral, Florida; and NATO Allies from Slovakia and Belgium.

The comprehensive training objectives of the event aimed to sharpen skills like unexploded ordnance identification and disposal, land navigation, casualty evacuation, controlled detonations, in addition to live counter-drone procedures for the first time during Deterrent Viking. EOD technicians worked through scenarios that involved performing defensive procedures while unmanned aircraft systems from simulated oppositional forces operated over participants.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Weston Cobb, 786th CES EOD quality assurance noncommissioned officer in charge, said the training event was built to replicate the full weight of a deployed environment. “Think of it as a complete deployment training event,” Cobb said. “We’re out with minimal tools, minimal equipment, minimal support, doing the same job in high risk, nonpermissive environments.”

Divided into ten teams, members ran operations simultaneously throughout the week before ending each day with a debrief, exchanging lessons learned, and refining tactics across units, partners and Allies.

Event planners adjusted scenarios in realtime based on team performance, pulling directly from real-world reports to keep training relevant to the threats EOD forces face globally.

The Baumholder Military Training Area allowed for U.S. Airmen and Allied forces to be fully immersed in a simulated real world environment. This provided handson, large-scale experience of collaboration and team coordination sharpening proficiency downrange.

“A lot of our skills are perishable,” said Senior Airman Kelsey Ockman, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron EOD team member. “Getting hands-on time with ordnance and improvised explosive devices — that’s all very valuable time for us to train.”

Cobb said beyond technical proficiency, Operation Deterrent Viking built the confidence that carries EOD technicians through their most demanding moments downrange.

“You can watch it from day one to day five and it just grows,” Cobb said. “They get more confident, more courageous and they attack things from completely different angles than what they had previously because of the skills they gain here.”

Training events like Operation Deterrent Viking ensure EOD forces remain ready to clear explosive threats and sustain the Air Force’s ability to generate airpower in support of NATO commitments across the European theater.

The 16th Sustainment Brigade hosted an Army Heritage celebration June 11 in honor of the U.S. Army’s 251st birthday, bringing together Soldiers, families, community leaders, and German partners from the Bundeswehr’s Artillerielehrbataillon 345.

“This legacy is not merely in individual moments and history books — it lives in each one of us,” said Col. Richardson, commander of the 16th Sustainment Brigade, as he addressed formations assembled on Minick Field in the early morning hours.

Richardson emphasized the importance of readiness and the rapidly changing security environment. “As we run today, remember we’re serving in Europe during a consequential moment in history. This environment is changing quickly, and our nation expects us to be ready,” he said.

Following opening remarks and honors, formations from the 16th SB, 44th Expeditionary Signal Brigade, 421st Medical Battalion, DENTAC, and German allies stepped off Minick Field for a three-mile esprit de corps run reminiscent of Baumholder’s “Home of Champions” era two decades ago.

Along the route, noncommis-

sioned officers called cadence to keep Soldiers synchronized. Families lined the traffic circle with posters and cowbells, cheering as a “sea of Soldiers” appeared down the roadway. The Baumholder Fire Department supported the event with a static display featuring an arch of U.S., Army, and German flags.

Soldiers echoed traditional running cadences, including the familiar line, “Who’s that coming over the hill… rolling like a wagon wheel,” reinforcing unit pride and cohesion. At the finish line, Richardson and Command Sgt. Maj. Ingram presented brigade coins of excellence to Soldiers nominated by unit leaders.

The celebration continued at Baumholder’s Hall of Champions gymnasium, where a heritage festival showcased cultural displays, food samples, and community resources. Organizational booths included 720th Explosive Ordnance Disposal, which allowed guests to operate robotic systems, and 5th Quartermaster Company riggers, who demonstrated parachute equipment. A highlight for many was the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s sUAS Knight’s Watch display, showcasing the brigade’s modernization and unmanned aerial capabilities.

Outside the gym, a dunk tank drew crowds while helping raise funds for an upcoming 16th SB

military event. Local food trucks and Army field feeding specialists from the 55th Quartermaster Company served meals, demonstrating the Army’s mobile feeding platforms.

Two Americans residing in Germany contributed a World War II historical display featuring original artifacts. Additional military vehicles and equipment were staged by unit subject matter experts, offering families and Soldiers hands-on opportunities to learn about warfighting sustainment capabilities. Many of these displays will also appear at the German American Friendship and Freedom Festival, scheduled for July 3–5 at the Baumholder Army Airfield.

“As we prepare to cut the cake, we’re reminded that passing the first slice from the most seasoned Soldier to the youngest symbolizes the transfer of knowledge, experience and responsibility from one generation to the next,” Richardson said. “It’s a reminder that while times and technology change, our values, purpose, and commitment to our nation endure.”

The ceremony brought together the brigade’s oldest and youngest Soldiers, joined by Richardson, Ingram, and Baumholder District Mayor Alefalsser, who cut the Army birthday cake with a sword symbolizing the brigade’s Knight heritage.

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Chaplain Office hosted a National Day of Prayer luncheon June 10, in the Heaton auditorium.

The National Day of Prayer (NDOP) is an annual observance help during the first week of May, inviting people of all faiths to unite in prayer for the nation, its leaders, and the communities.

Chaplain (Maj.) Randy Croel, chief of the clinical pastoral division at LRMC, acknowledged the schedule change.

“Operational commitments required us to adjust the date of our National Day of Prayer observance from its traditional May 7th date, but its significance remains unchanged,” said Croel. “This year's theme focuses on glorifying God and seeking his wisdom. Let us take this opportunity to come together as a team, reflect, and renew our focus.”

The event offered a welldeserved pause from the daily mission, bringing service members, Department of War civilians, and local nationals together to connect and find inspiration.

“The National Day of Prayer provides an opportunity for personnel to pause from the demands of daily operations and reflect on the values, beliefs, and sources of strength that sustain them,” said Croel. “Spiritual readiness is one of the key components of overall readiness, and events like this encourage reflection, connection, and resilience.”

He stated that taking time to pray, meditate, or simply gather in fellowship helps strengthen individuals and reinforces our commitment to caring for the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

A particularly moving moment followed as the room stood united for the playing of the German and U.S. national anthems. Hearing both anthems played side by side was a powerful tribute to our host nation, highlighting our enduring partnership and the deep bonds that connect our two countries.

Following the anthems, a thoughtful invocation was delivered by Chaplain Joseph Trahan, senior clinician, LRMC, setting a tone of gratitude and community spirit.

The event served as a profound reminder of why we gather to support one another and our

shared mission. It helped center the room, offering a moment of quiet reflection and spiritual grounding before the meal and the main program began.

Members of the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Band provided exceptional musical accompaniment throughout the observance.

“Hearing the music drift down the hallways really put a smile on my face,” said Emily Diemer, with LRMC’s Nutritional Medicine. “It sounded beautiful and absolutely

made my day.”

The highlight of the luncheon was undoubtedly the keynote address. Chaplain Jonathan Fowler, command chaplain, Army Medical Readiness Command Europe and the Director of Religious Support for Defense Health Network Europe, delivered a deeply inspiring and relatable message that resonated with everyone in attendance.

The remarks focused on the strength we draw from our faith, our community, and our dedication to service, leaving the audience

with plenty to think about as they return to their daily duties.

To cap off the inspiring words, LTC Christopher Alferez, commander, Medical Readiness Battalion-Rheinland Pfalz took the stage to present a special award of appreciation to the keynote speaker. It was a fitting conclusion to the address, honoring the speaker’s profound insights and contribution to the impactful event.

The luncheon was filled with great food, engaging conversations, and a renewed sense of community.

Croel took the opportunity to remind attendees of the teams purpose.

“The Clinical Pastoral Division is here to support everyone, regardless of faith background or religious preference,” said Croel. “Our mission is to provide opportunities for spiritual growth, confidential counseling, crisis support, and religious accommodation while fostering resilience across the organization.”

MEDDAC Bavaria Enhances Readiness and Interoperability During Tier 4 Tactical Combat Casualty Care Training

U.S. Army Medical Department Activity Bavaria conducted a rigorous Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) Tier 4 level training event June 17-18 at the Medical Simulation Training Center, focusing on advanced battlefield trauma management and operational medicine. The two-day event centered on the TC3 Tier 4 Combat Paramedic/Provider course. The highly specialized curriculum is designed to recertify paramedics and medical providers in advanced combat casualty care principles. It places a heavy emphasis on prolonged field care considerations, a critical skill set required when medical evacuation is delayed by operational constraints, contested logistics or austere environments.

Activity Bavaria conducted a rigorous Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) Tier 4 training event June 17-18 at the Vilseck Medical Simulation Training Center, focusing on advanced battlefield trauma management and operational medicine.

The two-day Combat Paramedic/Provider course is designed to recertify medical personnel in advanced casualty care principles. The curriculum heavily emphasizes prolonged field care — a critical skill set required when medical evacuation is delayed by operational constraints, contested logistics or austere environments.

“The purpose of Tactical Combat Casualty Care training is to ensure that MEDDAC Bavaria maintains its readiness and lethality on the battlefield in the face of ever-present threats to U.S. service members,” said U.S. Army Col. Colin Frament, MEDDAC Bavaria commander. “We consistently train Tactical Combat Casualty Care skills to prepare our combat medics and providers to stop as many preventable battlefield deaths as possible.”

Hosted in partnership with the 7th Army Training Command’s MSTC, the event provided participants with a realistic, simulationbased environment. High-fidelity scenarios pushed medical providers to make lifesaving decisions under simulated combat stress, bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world battlefield application.

Six students from nearby Army units and a senior medic from the

German Bundeswehr participated in the course. The diverse student population ensured a cross-pollination of operational knowledge and highlighted the importance of international partnerships within the European theater.

“This specific iteration of training was designed specifically for our combat paramedics,” said Sgt. 1st Class Elias Pantoja, S3 operations noncommissioned officer in charge for MEDDAC Bavaria. “Working side by side, these providers reinforced strict TC3 standards across multiple organizations, ensuring a standardized approach to trauma care in a diverse environment.”

Integrating U.S. and allied forces during medical simulations directly supports Medical Readiness Command, Europe’s commitment to maintaining a medically ready force.

“The benefits of training with our Bundeswehr and NATO partners are multifaceted,” Frament added. “Building a shared understanding of the foundations of TC3 maximizes patient survival rates and fosters more positive outcomes. Additionally, training together allows each force to understand the capabilities and skillsets of the other, which facilitates smooth integration into operational planning and builds trust.”

MEDDAC Bavaria plans to continue partnering with the 7th Army Training Command Medical Simulation Training Center to deliver essential paramedic and instructor training. Expanding the pool of validated TC3 Tier 4 instructors will increase regional training capacity, ensuring Army medical providers across the theater remain prepared to save lives in challenging environments.

Saxony, the park includes the incredible East Frisian islands, with their beautiful sand dunes, unique salt marshes, and mudflats. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009, the park contains more than 10,000 species of flora and fauna. But the park is more than just a natural paradise: visitors will never be short on entertaining activities. Here are four great things to do in Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.

1. Take a carriage ride across the Wadden Sea mudflats

Unless you’re less than 10 years old, mudflats might not seem all that entertaining. The tide goes out, and the muddy world below reveals itself…and so? But the Wadden Sea mudflats rarely inspire a ‘meh’ response in visitors. Why? First of all, the mudflats are teeming with life. We’re talking worms, shrimp, crabs, birds, and little kids chasing birds. Next, the flats are awe-inspiring: they reveal the connection between the land, the sea, and even islands in the sea.

And, in Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, mudflats are also transformed into roads, in the form of horsedrawn carriages (or Wattwagen, in German) that criss-cross them. At low tide, the carriages take passengers from the coastal town of Cuxhaven to the island of Neuwerk. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can reach an island without a boat!

The prices are a bit steep, but worth it: for children up to 9 years of age, a roundtrip ticket costs €30. For everyone else, the cost is €70. 2. See Harbor Porpoises in their Natural Habitat

It may seem odd to think that pods of small dolphin-like mammals live in water as cold and rugged as the North Sea. But they do, and springtime and early summer offer wonderful opportunities to see them!

Shy by nature, and with a population that is threatened in the North Sea by shipping, fishing, and other commercial activities, the porpoises aren’t always easy to sea. But it’s worth your time to try and see them. They are the only ones of their kind in German waters, and they’re also valued and beloved as a “sentinel species” – i.e. one that gives scientists clues as to the overall health of an ecosystem.

Visit the Fisherman’s House Museum in Norderney Norderney is a blast. A sandy, thriving, shopping-friendly East Frisian island (and its eponymous town) just off the coast of Lower Saxony, it makes for a great day

trip. You can grab a bite to eat, wander the beach, and contemplate the sea.

You can also go to the Fisherman’s House Museum, which is really well done and surprisingly entertaining. The museum opened in 1937, and does a great job of showing how island families lived and worked almost a century ago. While there, visitors can learn about Norderney island’s development, history, fishing industry, and culture.

In jiving with the island vibe, the museum is only open three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), unless you schedule a large (15+ people) group tour. Entrance is free for children under 7. 4. Get sandy on the island of Spiekeroog

Spiekeroog is one of the best East Frisian islands, mostly because it seems so wild. Located less than 6 kilometers from the German mainland, and car-free, Spiekeroog contains thousands of acres of sand dunes, most of them untouched and unspoiled.

Low tide is a high time on the island. When mudflats appear, visitors can swoop in (along with omnipresent birds) to check out the shell life. You’ll see thousands of mussels and oysters doing their absolute best to burrow out of harm’s way.

Getting to Lower Saxony National Park

By car, the park’s visitor center at Wilhelmshaven is just under 6 hours from Kaiserslautern, 5.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 6.5 hours from Stuttgart.
