European Partnership Integration Enterprise hosts Unified Vision 23

The European Partnership Integration Enterprise hosted exercise Unified Vision 2023 for 21 NATO allies and partners at Ramstein Air Base, June 12-23.

Nearly 60 service members participated in the joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance exercise, which aimed to integrate JISR capabilities and procedures across the alliance, enabling a unified intelligence enterprise for the member and partner nations.

“Unified Vision 23 is driven by

the need to address operational and future joint ISR challenges to meet alliance interoperability, federation, synchronization, and future capability requirements,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jason Lamont, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa individual mobilization augmentee to the director of ISR. “This exercise gives the alliance the chance to connect, assess and test capabilities in an exercise environment before needing to use it in a realworld scenario.”

Unified Vision exercises have taken place every three years since

Distributor needed!!!

2012, with each iteration expanding on the previous exercise and advancing training objectives. This year’s exercise was designed to assess the status of development of NATO’s JISR capabilities.

In addition to the U.S., participating countries included Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Croatia and Spain. Senior leaders from each country visited the EPIE to see the exercise in action.

The EPIE is a 20-nation coalition focused on ISR interoperability and enhancing capabilities amongst the U.S. and its allies. Centrally located on Ramstein AB, it allows partners to congregate and execute shared mission sets and training.

“This gives senior level officers a better glimpse of how the activities of Unified Vision 23 and EPIE’s support translate to the warfighter,” said Maj. Darrell Moyers, USAFE-AFAFRICA Coalition ISR Integration Branch chief. “JISR is not just about computers and analysts in an office space, it ensures

the information provided from these great enterprises can be delivered to those who need it most in a real time and executable fashion.” NATO allies and partners routinely serve together, both operationally and during exercises, enhancing relationships in the alliance to ensure timely and coordinated responses in peacetime and crises. Exercises like Unified Vision 23 provide an opportunity for NATO forces to familiarize themselves with other nations’ practices in order to continue delivering air and space power for the betterment of all allies and partners.

Proud Voices event creates dialog within KMC

In honor of Pride Month, the 86th Airlift Wing special observance committee hosted a safe space discussion called Proud Voices, Wednesday, June 28.

“Proud Voices is a safe space where people from all walks of life come together to ask questions and discuss different experiences and topics without discrimination, criticism, harassment, bullying or shame,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Briana Lucas, 86th Medical Support Squadron resource management office noncommissioned officer in charge. “This event helps open the channels of communication between members of the Ramstein Air Base community, allies and those who just want to understand the perspectives and experiences of the LGBTQI+ community.”

During the event, there was a presentation slideshow educating all attendees on the history of the LGBTQI+ community. Additionally there were highlights of the

history and experiences of the transgender population for awareness. A panel of members shared their personal stories

and experiences to help start the discussion and create a safe environment. After the panel discussions, attendees

broke off into smaller groups to participate in guided discussions and share personal experiences.

Hosting the event on base allows base and wing leadership the opportunity to show support for the LGBTQI+ members serving at Ramstein AB, said Morgan Evans, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron physical evaluation board liaison officer. The event gave the members of team Ramstein the freedom to detail some of their experiences not just as part of the Kaiserslautern Military Community, but also what they have experienced while serving our country as someone in the LGBTQI+ community.

“The goal of this event was to bring together those who may generally feel too embarrassed to ask questions, fear asking questions and those who wish to show their allyship toward this community,” said Evans. “In short all proud voices events are for anyone with a healthy and respectful curiosity.”

In addition to Proud Voices, Ramstein AB special observance committee held a color run, and a safe-space story time that focused on inclusivity and providing ways for the community to celebrate and to grow and learn together.

435th AGOW Airmen blend resiliency with giving back

Twelve members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing participated in a service project and spiritual retreat in Transylvania, Romania, June 19-23.

The Airmen assisted in helping a local community organization restore a 100-year-old building to be used for a medical clinic, library, community center and school that will service the local community and its surrounding areas. The Airmen helped clear out material from spaces, prime and plaster walls, remove old floor boards, paint exterior walls, clear landscapes and install and paint a new fence.

“This retreat has given our Airmen an opportunity to step back from their day-to-day job and really see the bigger picture of what we are doing as a military while giving back to the community,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Samantha Melendez, 4th Air Support Operations Group First Sergeant.

The group blended their days with resiliency seminars led by the wing chaplain, worked on the service project alongside local community members and visited cultural sites and local area attractions.

The service project is the culmination of years of work from a local community organization that has been restoring the culturally significant building and creating a space that can offer a variety of social services to the community.

“Getting to this point has had its setbacks,” said Roxana Dobre, Saint Mary Society project coordinator. “Funding was always a challenge, but members of the community rallied together to help us take small steps that have led us here.”

The project is implementing a phased approach into the services the building will be providing. A free medical clinic is slated to be operational in the next two weeks.

“We are trying to cover a social need,” Dobre said. “We have started with a medical center, which will be for those that are in need. Not only dedicated to the local community, but communities surrounding us that have a need.”

A team of volunteer doctors and medical staff are already sourced to start operations in the newly completed facility.

The benefit of the service project and retreat is two sided. Both

the community and the participating Airmen received an advantage from the project.

“This experience has opened up new horizons for me, while getting to experience different cultures and spiritual beliefs,” said Staff Sgt. Jaidah Terry, 1st Combat Communications Squadron radio frequency transmission systems technician. “All this while getting to do something great like volunteering.”

The experience of blending a service project with a spiritual retreat is a unique concept that had not been done before at the 435th AGOW.

“Wing leadership encouraged this retreat to help us strengthen relationships with our allies, while providing our deployed Airmen with a great opportunity to build their resiliency,” said Chaplain Maj. Lane Campbell, 435th Wing chaplain. “This was a great opportunity to connect with our deployed Airmen and provide them with spiritual care.”

While the retreat offered aspects of spiritual resiliency, Campbell took time to learn how each member engaged with spirituality to ensure everyone attending got something out of the retreat.

“As the 435th AGOW Chaplain, I want to make sure everyone has access to chaplain services,” Campbell said. “While I cannot be at all the 26 locations our 1,400 Airmen are located at across Europe, my goal is to make connections with Air Force and Army chaplains where they are located to ensure everyone can have their spiritual needs met.”

Historical last active duty JSTARS flight at RAB

The 10th Expeditionary Airborne Command and Control Squadron conducted its last active duty deployed aircrew mission on an E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft, at Ramstein Air Base, June 26.

After over 20 years of communicating real-time situational awareness of ground operations to the joint force, NATO partners and allies, the JSTARS will leave behind a long legacy, spanning as far back as Operation Desert Storm, as the Air Force transitions to more advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations platforms.

“A lot of these aircraft use technology from the 1950s and 1960s, but with this new platform being put into place, we’re going to take advantage of more advanced technologies, which will keep our Airmen out of danger,” said U.S. Air

Aircrew of an E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System aircraft stand together following the platform’s final active duty flight at Ramstein Air Base, June 26. The men and women of the JSTARS team have been instrumental to overseas contingency operations, flying more than 85,000 combat hours in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, Odyssey Dawn and Unified Protector.

Robins AFB, Georgia, June 29, and their work will be handed over to Georgia Air National Guard personnel at the 116th Air Control Wing, who will complete the dissolution of the JSTARS aircraft.

“The Guard will carry on the mission just as the active component did,” said Capt. Isaac Carluccio, 10th EACCS mission planning chief.

The new system taking the place of the JSTARS is the Tactical Operations Center, which is currently being set up at Robins AFB. This new system provides Airmen more latitude to conduct ISR operations from a ground location.

“This is a historic moment,” said Branch. “A lot of units don’t work together as closely as we do at Robins Air Force Base. There are some challenges that come with it but at the end of the day, we all come together and make sure that the mission is successful.”

Former military child revisits Ramstein Air Base

With nostalgia reflecting in his eyes and a lifetime of stories etched in his heart, a proud grandfather took a moment to

reflect on a transformative chapter of his younger years as a military child.

Once a teenager living in Europe, Steven Howe now finds comfort in recalling his time living at Ramstein from 1965-1968 at the end of his father’s Air Force

career. Recently, he returned to the base with his youngest grandson, Mark Sesholtz, to share his story. Moving from one base to another throughout his childhood during his father’s career, Howe became acquainted with the highs and lows of a lifestyle many military families are familiar with. However, it was during his years living in Europe that his journey took an extraordinary turn, leaving a lasting mark on his character.

“Living in Europe and learning about different cultures is important,” said Howe. “I want my grandson to experience this firsthand.”

Howe’s family always had a positive outlook on the regularity of change in their lives. This helped him and his brothers adjust whenever they found themselves in a new city. According to Howe, his time in Europe was full of exploration, cultural immersion and profound personal growth. Every experience was a lesson in resilience, adaptability and appreciating the richness of different cultures.

Along the journey, the bonds with fellow military children created lifelong friendships for Howe. He still meets with friends from high school and has maintained the relationships. Together, they navigated the challenges of adapting to new schools and social environments united by a shared understanding of the constant changes of living as a military child.

The education Howe received from Kaiserslautern High School, as well as living abroad, prepared him for his future.

“It was education that helped me to become who I am,” said Howe. “The education I received in Kaiserslautern High School put me far ahead of my peers when I returned to the United States for my senior year.”

After graduating from high school Howe pursued his interest in joining the military. However, Howe was disqualified due to injuries sustained during a car accident. He went on to earn a degree in engineering. He said that the base of his education he

received at KHS set him ahead of other students.

As years went on, Howe continued to carry the imprints of his European adventures. His memories became stories he shared with his children and grandchildren, fostering an appreciation for the world beyond their own borders.

Howe said that everytime he returns to Ramstein it feels like coming home. Now as a grandfather, returning to Ramstein with his grandson Sesholtz, Howe can directly pass down his love for cultural exploration.

“This trip has been everything I wanted it to be,” said Sesholtz. “I have been very blessed in my life to be able to travel with my family, and I am inspired to continue traveling in the future.”

Howe’s experience as a military child has led him to share advice for others in a similar situation.

“Take in as much of the culture from Europe as you possibly can while you are here,” said Howe. “There is so much at your fingertips to explore.”

Army Current Operations Engagement Tour: 21st TSC advancing strategic discussions, alliance building

The Army Current Operations Engagement Tour is a critical component of the U.S. Army’s strategic outreach program, aimed at fostering open dialogue and cooperation between military and civilian leaders. Launched by the Department of the Army, the ACOET serves as an invaluable platform for illuminating discussions on global security matters and enables direct communication channels between key stakeholders in the U.S. defense establishment.

This tour is not merely an event but an ongoing process that ensures the integration of diverse perspectives into the strategic thinking of our armed forces. Through a series of discussions, meetings, and presentations, participants in the ACOET have the opportunity to delve deep into the nuances of national security issues, operational strategies, and the role of the Army in safeguarding our nation’s interests.

I recently had the esteemed honor of participating in the ACOET in my capacity as the Support Operation Officer for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. The ACOET served as an enriching platform for illuminating discussions on global security matters, notably the ongoing war of Russia in Ukraine, and the critical roles both the 21st TSC and Team 21 play in bolstering logistics support.

The ACOET is instrumental in bridging the communication gap between our Army’s civilian leaders, elected officials, their staff, and key members of the Joint and Army staff. It cultivates a vibrant environment for the exchange of ideas on national security objectives and the integral part the 21st TSC plays in accomplishing these goals. A particularly profound highlight of the tour was the invaluable opportunity to engage directly with the Secretary of the Army and members of Congress and their staff, offering a broadened perspective on the challenges and opportunities our nation currently faces.

Our discussions dove deep into the intricacies of contested logistics and port diversification - two vital pillars of the Army’s operational strategy. Contested logistics brought to light the complexities of providing steadfast support in zones of conflict. Engaging in dialogues

on these challenges and possible solutions, we developed a deeper understanding of the realities on the ground and identified strategies for enhancing our operational readiness.

The subject of port diversification was another substantial area of focus, underlining the need for resilience in our supply chains. In a world where geopolitical tensions continue to escalate, the diversification of port access is pivotal to safeguarding the continuity and effectiveness of our military operations.

We also delved into the lessons we have learned in supporting the presidential drawdown authority to Ukraine. These insightful conversations emphasized the essential role of the 21st TSC in offering support during Ukraine’s challenging times. The 21st TSC has been instrumental in meeting the logistics requirements for transporting ammunition and material to Ukraine under the Presidential Drawdown Authority, underlining our commitment to fostering peace and stability.

A recurring theme throughout

the tour was the importance of fortifying our alliances and partnerships with NATO and other allies. In an era of mounting global challenges, these relationships are paramount in enhancing our strategic capabilities, providing mutual support, and ensuring collective security.

Participating in the ACOET reaffirmed our commitment to these alliances and stressed the necessity for continuous collaboration, joint exercises, and information sharing. Strong partnerships with our NATO allies reinforce our preparedness, joint capabilities, and effectiveness in crisis response, confirming our mutual dedication to preserving peace and stability.

Reflecting on my participation in the ACOET, it was not merely an honor but a profoundly enriching experience that bestowed invaluable insights into our duties at the 21st TSC. The personal interactions with the Secretary of the Army and members of Congress and their staff, combined with the extensive discussions on global security matters, will undoubtedly guide my approach to forthcom-

ing challenges and opportunities.

As I continue in my role at the 21st TSC, the ACOET experience has re-energized my dedication to upholding excellence, cultivating alliances, and championing peace and stability.

Building on the strategic discussions at ACOET, we are now more equipped than ever to handle the challenging logistics of contested environments. With a reinforced understanding of the obstacles and strategies related to contested logistics, we can increase the effectiveness of our operations. We’ve gained valuable insights on how to better navigate these difficult areas, ensuring that our forces are supported and resourced in the most challenging of circumstances.

Reaffirming our commitment to our NATO alliances and other partnerships during ACOET was not only symbolic but also strategic. These relationships are critical in boosting our operational capabilities, offering mutual support, and ensuring collective security. We continue to emphasize the importance of collaboration, joint exercises, and information sharing with

our NATO allies. These partnerships serve to enhance our collective preparedness and response effectiveness, underlining the strength that lies in unity.

In conclusion, my ACOET experience underscored the complexities and rewards of serving at the 21st TSC. It provided a unique platform to engage with key leaders, discuss strategic issues, and represent the voice of the 21st TSC and Team 21. The insights and experiences gained from this tour have reaffirmed my dedication to upholding excellence, fostering alliances, and supporting global peace and stability. As I continue my role at the 21st TSC, I carry forward the enriched perspective and motivation gained from ACOET. I am more committed than ever to using these insights to navigate the challenges ahead and seize the opportunities that lie before us. Together with Team 21, we will continue to uphold the highest standards of service, adaptability, and resilience, working towards our mission of sustaining the fight and supporting our partners in the pursuit of global peace and stability.

Public affairs flexes strategic communication capabilities during DEFENDER 23

If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?

If more than 24,000 Service Members from 20 nations participate in a large-scale global exercise, and no one reports on it, does it send a message?

The debate about falling trees is ongoing, but there is no arguing the need for accurate reporting during the U.S. Army Europe and Africa-led exercise DEFENDER 23. The European continent-wide exercise took place April 22 to June 23, with significant activity in the Balkans and Romania.

As U.S. and Allied Soldiers came together to train as they fight, so too did joint force and multinational public affairs professionals collaborate to ensure the public, especially communities where training took place, received truthful information regarding their activities.

Public affairs efforts directly supported the DEFENDER 23 mission to deter adversaries as the nested exercises Swift Response 23, Immediate Response 23 and Saber Guardian 23 transformed operational mission command, built readiness, and strengthened the Alliance in the United States European Command’s area of responsibility.

“There are hundreds of DEFENDER 23 stories that speak to mission success,” said 21st Theater Sustainment Command public affairs officer Maj. Vonnie Wright. “It’s our job to make sure they get told. It’s the best part of my career field and what made me want to join this functional area.”

Those stories include Croatians taking the lead for logistic operations moving U.S. military equipment for the first time as Soldiers from the Croatian Support Command unloaded the Minnesota National Guard’s 34th Infantry Division equipment from a Croatian naval ship at Zadar Gaženica for onward movement to Udbina Air Base, Croatia.

Wright and the 319th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment worked with Cabinet of Croatian Chief of General Staff Sgt. Maj. Boris Brdaric, STRATCOM NCO, to coordinate coverage of the historic event. Brdaric said it was a privilege to work with them as well as 205th Theater Public Affairs Support Element and 34th ID PAO during DEFENDER 23. As the Croatian public affairs coordinator, Brdaric was in contact with his country’s Ministry of Defense PAO and more than 15 Croatian media outlets, providing them information on DEFENDER 23, reaching far more audiences with more relevant messages than the U.S. Army could develop and disseminate on its own.

“Sharing ideas, best practices and background info is key, crucial, in fighting our adversaries in the field of StratCom [strategic communications],” said Brdaric. He said the opportunity to work with U.S. Army public affairs personnel in the field was valuable experience for his team.

Brdaric said one of his favorite DEFENDER 23 experiences, and an example of the value of collaboration, was being able to showcase exercise highlights during a distinguished visitors day in Udbina.

“We couldn’t make such effective videos without content from U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force PAOs who were covering DEFENDER 23 activities all over the theater,” said Brdaric.

In addition to building interoperability and relationships with Allies, U.S. Army PAO worked with their counterparts in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force to highlight joint force efforts, such as HOSPEX 23. Led by the 30th Medical Brigade, HOSPEX 23 evaluated and trained deployed medical capabilities with Allies, supported by the U.S. Air Force 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron simulating medical evacuations on a C130J from Romania to Ramstein Air Force Base. Public affairs personnel from 21st TSC, U.S. Air Force Europe-Air Force Africa, 86th Airlift Wing, Ramstein AFB and Medical Readiness Command Europe collaborated on a media day that gave U.S. and international media access to the Ramstein AFB flight line as well as senior leaders from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. The result was extensive international media coverage of a successful Ally and joint force effort.

“The experience working with my fellow PAOs during DEFENDER 23, and specifically the HOSPEX, is an example of a successful joint communications activity across the services,” said Cpt. Jose Davis, Media Operations Division, HQ USAFE-AFAFRICA Public Affairs.

Davis said today’s dense information environment makes networking with other PAOs, across forces and with Allies, essential.

“We are really pushing at integrating and not just being interoperable, but being interchangeable,” said Davis. “We’re not just producing

content for the U.S. Air Force or the U.S. Army, we are producing content for NATO, for an alliance of countries.”

He said the 21st TSC, Army Support Activity-Black Sea, the U.S. Air Force and Romanian PAO working together to cover the HOSPEX was a perfect paradigm on working collaboratively in a common information environment to communicate a common operation.

A significant amount of planning and coordination went into helping media communicate an accurate and compelling DEFENDER 23 nar-

rative. Media days in various countries throughout DEFENDER 23, gave reporters access to senior leaders and subject matter experts — briefed and prepped by public affairs staff —and opportunities to see equipment up close. According to Wright, these special media events helped shape the narrative and enhance media relations.

They included a media day at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania, May 19.

“Employing Army Prepositioned Stocks was a DEFENDER 23 focus,” said Wright. “Inviting media to observe the 405th Army Field Support Brigade issue prepositioned stock to the 50th Multi Role Bridge Company in support of the Saber Guardian 23 wet gap crossings amplified our ability to rapidly deploy equipment to support a large combat-credible force from within Europe as well as from the United States.”

The event was a collaboration between PAO from the Romania Defense Staff, 21st TSC, Army Support Activity-Black Sea, and 7th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, which led Saber Guardian 23 public affairs planning. 10th Mountain Division, deployed for DEFENDER 23, also supported.

“The coordination of any media day requires a great deal of work and, foremost, teamwork,” said Lt. Col. Dan Crisan, Public Affairs Section of the Romanian Defense Staff. He said he felt fortunate to be able to join forces with U.S. Army public affairs to conduct a successful event.

“We delivered in terms of accomplishing our goals and we delivered news to local, national and international media,” said Crisan.

Vanessa Moses, as they field questions from German and American journalists invited to the Hospital Exercise 23 media day at Ramstein Air Force Base, June 6. U.S. Army Cpt. Avery Smith, public affairs officer, 7th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment (right), provides a supplemental media prep session to 405th Army Field Support Brigade, BENELUX Battalion subject matter experts (left to right), Charles Sherwood, Maj. James Maskovyak and Scott Schneider before international reporters arrive for a media day at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, Romania, May 19.

7th MPAD team leader Cpt. Avery Smith, said collaboration helps public affairs cover diverse and geographically dispersed exercises under tight deadlines to counter mis/disinformation.

“Our stakeholders should be receiving information quickly and accurately before our adversaries have the chance to spin reality into their own propaganda efforts,” said Smith. “Although time is a challenge for us,

it is also a challenge for our adversaries, and how we spend our time in the information space will determine who better shapes the narrative.”

Relationships are essential to meeting that PAO mission, according to Josh Rojas, director of public affairs for ASA-Black Sea, who along with community relations specialist Oana Copaceanu, developed a strong working relationship with Smith during his deployment at MK Air Base, and

enthusiastically supported DEFENDER 23.

The strong teamwork was evident during at least two different media days hosted at MK Air Base during DEFENDER 23.

“If there was an exercise or a media event that had to be coordinated, we did everything in our power to make sure those exercises would go off without a hitch,” said Rojas. “We are proud to say that we were

able to provide support for V Corps, 7th MPAD, 21st TSC and the 519th Hospital Center with various exercises throughout DEFENDER 23.”

In all, U.S. military public affairs personnel posted nearly 5,000 DEFENDER 23 photos, articles and videos to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service, documenting history and growing relationships with their colleagues across forces and with Allies. Along with the external cover-

age generated by media days, press releases and other outreach activities, public affairs personnel made sure the DEFENDER 23 message — that the U.S. is a coalescing force in Europe improving interoperability and readiness and strengthening resolve across the Alliance — resounded around the globe.

“We are stronger together and working side by side we became even stronger,” said Crisan.

Out for a bike ride? Remember these safety tips

Since the invention of the first bike in the 1800s, bike riding has become a popular form of transportation, enjoyment, and physical activity.

Yet it can also be a dangerous one.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 1,000 bicyclists die every year, and more than 130,000 are injured in bike crashes across the United States.

According to the CDC, this implies a heavy cost — exceeding $23 billion annually — in health care, lost work, loss of quality of life, and lost lives.

To make your bike riding experience fun and safe, remember to “learn and know the laws in your community, and follow them,”

said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Taylor Boeckel, occupational safety manager at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, located close to Honolulu, Hawaii.

“Wearing personal protective gear is always important, from a new rider to the most experienced of riders,” she added. “Make sure you know how to obey traffic laws and lights.”

Protective equipment is also mandatory at all military installations, which have programs that specifically address bike safety.

These include regulations common to all services and apply

whether on or off a military installation, such as requiring service members and families to always wear Consumer Product Safety Commission-approved bike helmets, reflective upper outer garments, and equipping bicycles with operable head and taillights during hours of reduced visibility, among others.

Boeckel highlighted that protection and complying with traffic

laws is especially important for children on bikes.

“Not all of them know or understand the traffic laws, so it’s important for the parents [or caretakers] to teach them,” she said.

She had safety advice for seasoned riders, too:

“Don’t get complacent with laws once you get comfortable with your routine,” she said. “For riders who ride the same path every day, it may be easy to become very comfortable with that route and start cutting corners such as not stopping when necessary.”

Ensuring your bike is always in top shape is also important yearround, she said.

“Tires wear even while in storage,” so it’s important to make sure they are in optimal riding condition.

“Do a bike check prior to each ride, just as you would your vehicle,” she said. “Check your tires and

brakes for operation.”

Tips to remember

Here are the top five tips Boeckel recommends all riders should always keep in mind:

• Stay vigilant.

• Don’t allow yourself to become distracted while riding.

• Stay highly visible both at night and during the day.

• Obey all traffic laws.

• Always wear your personal protective equipment, such as a helmet and closed shoes for better control of the pedals.

Like driving a car, riding your bike requires relying on your senses to keep you alert and aware. This means not engaging in distracting activities or wearing earphones or other listening devices while you’re on your bike, according to the U.S.

Army’s Safety Program.

It also means not consuming substances that may alter your state, such as drinking. According to CDC, about one-third of crashes that result in a bicyclist’s death involve alcohol for the motor vehicle driver and/or bicyclist.

Additional safety recommendations include:

• Watch the road for traffic and pedestrians.

• Always make yourself visible to others.

• Listen for other vehicles and people.

• Stay in your lane

• Always hold on to both handlebars for better balance and control, especially in case you need to break suddenly.

Yet it’s not only bike riders that must be on the lookout, explained Boeckel. Vehicle drivers must always be on the lookout for bicycles as well.

And while some cities may have well defined bike lanes, many others don’t.

“Always be a defensive driver, meaning be on the lookout for the other guy” added Boeckel.

Most importantly, Boeckel recommends children and minors never ride without supervision.

“Teaching children how to be safe and supervising them” as they’re on their bikes, is key to building early awareness.

For more information on how to be safe on your bike, talk to your installation’s safety management team.

a healthy life. The heat can prove a bit much for some people, and it may even cause someone to have a heat stroke or suffer from dehydration. Follow these tips to practice a practical lifestyle; this advice is for people of all walks of life.

Drink plenty of water

If there is one piece of advice that you should follow, above all else, it is to drink at least eight cups of water a day. You may want to consider drinking even more during these warmer months, especially if you are moving around more than average. Consider investing money into a water bottle so that you can fill it up while you’re on the go. Drinking water whenever you feel thirsty or too hot is a good way to keep your body hydrated. Failing to hydrate your body properly can cause serious health consequences; therefore, you must pay attention to your body and take care of it.

Get moving

How active are you? Do you exercise? Believe it or not, maintaining an active lifestyle can help your body remain healthy. You won’t feel the effects of the heat as much when you lose weight, and you will be able to function for longer periods of time without needing more water. Establish a healthy workout regime

One of my favorite things about living in Germany is how dog-friendly everything is. I take my Italian Greyhound just about everywhere I go. And now that the weather’s warm, I’m planning even more outdoor adventures together. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your four legged friend during the warmer months.

Don’t let Fido dehydrate in the summer sun. Most restaurants are more than willing to provide you with a bowl and tap water. Simply ask, “Haben Sie Wasser für meinen Hund, bitte?”

Bees

As I write, my small dog it sitting on my lap with her mouth swollen like a chipmunk after eating a bee. I wish I

so that you are steadily increasing the quality of your life.

Early preparation

Prepare all of your trips and outings ahead of time. Bring enough water and snacks to help properly nourish everyone you are with. Share your drinks and snacks with the younger ones to help prevent them from facing dehydration. Do the same for the elderly as well as help them stay cool to lower the risk of heat stroke, which they are more prone to suffering from. Also let outdoor workers know they are more susceptible to dehydration than anyone else. Give them advice on how they should hydrate themselves regularly to limit heat related illnesses or incidents. Pay attention to everyone in your immediate life and monitor their status as the summer progresses.

Spread the word

Share with people about how to remain safe and secure this summer. You don’t need to impose your new found knowledge on how to live safely during summer, but you can make helpful suggestions on how people can practice proper habits as the heat increases. Consume fluids, stay active, and above all else remain cool. Eating healthy and regularly is also important. Have fun during this summer, and remember to build memories that will last a lifetime.

could say she learned a lesson from all of this. Seeing as this is the second time we’ve been through this, I doubt it. One sting is generally not dangerous. But if you notice extreme swelling or trouble breathing, head to the vet ASAP (as soon as possible). If your dog has had multiple stings or had a bee in its mouth, call your vet. Bee stings in the mouth can be life threatening. It can cause swelling that can make it hard for the dog to breathe.

Ticks

We love to take hikes in the many wooded trails in the area. Ticks also love grassy trails, so it’s important to check your dog for them every day. You can buy

inexpensive tick removal tools at the vet or online. One of our favorites is a tick removal pen.

We also chose to use an all natural tick treatment for our dog because she’s sensitive and we try to avoid harsh chemicals in the home. I put a drop of rose geranium essential oil between her shoulder blades every morning. Below are the PROS and CONS of geranium:

PROS

• No harsh chemicals

• My husband and I use it too! Before a walk in any wooded, grassy or shady area, I apply a drop of the oil to each of my ankles.

• We have never had a tick on the dog when we applied the oil. Before learning this trick, I removed up to 3 a day.

• A small bottle lasts forever and only costs $20! You only use one to two drops (for larger dogs: one between the shoulder blades and one at the base of the tail).

• It smells lovely! It smells like roses and geraniums (not stinky dog).

CONS

• We have to remember to apply it every day.

Parasites

There have been many reported cases of Giardia (a microscopic parasite that causes a diarrheal disease) in Ramstein and Vogelweh. Parasites are commonly spread through fecal matter. (Look mom, I wrote about poop on the internet!) Signs that your dog may have a parasite are: diarrhea (I did it again!), loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting. In small dogs especially, diarrhea and vomiting can be extremely dangerous. Don’t hesitate to call your vet.

Dining out

You’ve probably noticed that when you see a dog at a restaurant, they are quietly sitting under the table seeming not to care about the food on the table or the other patrons. Remember that in Germany, your dog is expected to behave as well as any other patron.

ABC IN KMC: Yorktown meets Royal Deux-Ponts

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Count Christian IV, or Count Christian of Palatine of Zweibrücken as his official name, played a significant role in the design of the residential city of Zweibrücken. He commissioned the layout of Herzogplatz, the castle and the creation of elegant gardens. However, did you know that there is a direct link between Christian and his family to your recent Independence Day?

Count Christian was very Francophile affine and engaged in close ties with the French court. When King Louis XV needed troops in the mid-1750 s, Christian readily stepped in and recruited soldiers in Homburg, from the Alsace and other parts of the Palatinate.

He quickly activated the Royal Deux-Ponts Regiment by 1757. In 1776 the thirteen colonies declared their independence from the English crown and Benjamin Franklin personally traveled to Paris, asking for French support in the Revolutionary War. Six French regiments were sent overseas, one of them was the Royal Deux-Ponts

that set sail in 1780. Christian IV’s son Christian von Forbach was appointed as regiment commander, while his brother Wilhelm von Forbach was charged as brigade commander.

After years of battle and the colonies on the verge of defeat, Cornwallis’ troops outnumbered the joint American and French army by far and had entrenched themselves in Yorktown. They tried to force the city to declare defeat. The turn of the tide occurred Oct. 14, 1781, when Christian’s brother Wilhelm von Forbach managed to break through their lines with his brigade at “Redoute 9” near Yorktown and consequently contributed to the English troops having to capitulate five days later Oct. 19.

The regiment played a decisive role with only 29 casualties in the turning point of the thirteen colonies eventually gaining independence only two years later. Christian and Wilhelm von Forbach were personally honored by America’s first president George Washington and the majority of soldiers returned to their homes two years later in 1783. A painting by John Trumbull of the two together with Washington hangs at the Capitol

in Washington D.C. Father Count Christian IV unfortunately didn’t live to experience this honor as he died at his hunting castle in Herschweiler in 1775.

Zweibrücken’s sister city is Yorktown, Pennsylvania, and delegates that come for official visits never fail to underline this important achievement. America’s independence inspired others to claim freedom and the Royal Deux-Ponts regiment fought during the French Revolution after the Storm of the Bastille in 1789. A German group of over 200,000 soldiers for the Union also played a decisive role in the Civil War almost a century later.

Christian’s legacy lives on in a school in Herschweiler-Pettersheim in Kusel County, named HerzogChristian-Schule for students to remember his family’s heroic historic role, which also influenced history and sparked a flame throughout Europe.

Unfortunately, Christian IV’s enchanting hunting castle was burned down by Napoleon’s troops along their way to Mainz, but that is another story to tell…
