COMMENTARY: Fit to fight: A battle versus oneself

The Air Force has created the Comprehensive Airman Fitness framework that outlines the parameters of the idea of being “Fit to Fight” by focusing on four pillars: Physical, mental, social and spiritual fitness. That all looks good on paper, but for me I had no real idea of how connected each of those pillars were. It wasn’t until I was bound by a boot and crutches, that I realized how important it was to go to the gym, go out with friends, and set time aside to relax, and how it all affects my mental wellness. For those who are not familiar with these four pillars, let's take a closer look. Physical fitness refers to the
ability to physically accomplish all aspects of the mission while remaining healthy and uninjured. Mental fitness refers to the ability to effectively cope with the unique mental stressors and challenges needed to ensure mission readiness. Social fitness refers to the ability to engage in healthy social networks that promote overall wellbeing and optimal performance. Then, spiritual fitness refers to the ability to adhere to beliefs, principles or values needed to persevere and prevail in accomplishing missions. I grew up in a family of athletes, yet my idea of physical fitness included walks around my neighborhood and mandatory physical education in public school. Honestly, the idea of sweating and maxing out my lung capacity never interested me. I competed in bowling and softball, and
took every art class I could in my younger years. Up until my early 20s my diet and exercise routine was a cry for help. I was overweight and unmotivated. After reaching my heaviest weight and becoming uncomfortable in my own skin I knew it was time for a change. I started working out at the gym and creating healthier eating habits through meal prepping. Fitness is now a lifestyle for me and I wouldn’t be the same without it. Then, I left my job as a preschool teacher and entered active duty military service. I’m a first-term Airman with only one year on station and a rollercoaster of bad luck injuries. You ask, where do the other pillars fit into this story? Don’t worry, it’s coming. As you read, physical fitness was not always easy for me, but I have created a routine and desire for
self-improvement, making continuing down this path much easier. But what happens when you are stopped by an injury? Before joining the military I had never experienced any type of injury that required me to go to the emergency room. As someone who has never broken, sprained or even been to the emergency room for any type of injury, I have now become a frequent flier for ER visits. Within the first few months of arriving at RAB I was seen for a trauma injury and physical therapy due to over stimulating a muscle during technical training school. Then about three months later I was hit in the face with a softball jeopardizing my ability to continue playing with my team, who provided me with a sense of social stability while being overseas for the first time ever. Only to be followed up by fracturing my foot while participat-
ing in a social outing with coworkers four months after the previous injury. Going through each and every one of these situations was annoying to say the least, but piling them on top of one another, and getting progressively worse, made it almost impossible to keep up with my active and high-paced lifestyle. This is when the other pillars are truly tested and you have to wrestle with the mind games. How do I ask for help without burdening others? How do I continue to do the activities I love to do? How will I be able to keep up with my friends on weekends? How do I stay mindful and motivated to keep up with life while being stuck in limbo? All of these questions are valid and heard. The thing to remember is you are not alone. The Air Force has created a culture where Airmen can rely on one another to get anything

My current injury, an avulsion fracture in my left foot, has bound me to a knee scooter and crutches for a minimum of six to eight weeks. This type of fracture is caused when you twist or bend your body abruptly and the tendons pull causing a part of the bone they are attached to splinter. At first I was too afraid to even leave my dorm in fear of further injury or judgment. I sat and stared at the stark white walls, wishing for my foot to magically heal itself so I could get back to my go-go-go lifestyle. Obviously that didn’t happen and I had to learn how to create a new normal for myself. I started at the gym — my constant — my comfort place. At first
Kaiserslautern American I was embarrassed people would judge me rolling up in a scoot and boot, but to my surprise I only received words of affirmation. People would commend me for getting into the gym and remind me, “I saw you gettin’ it at the gym! If you can come in there and do something there is no excuse for me!” Or the occasional smile and “Keep it up!” This all played into regaining my mental, social and spiritual fitness. Being able to push through a physical injury with so much love and support from strangers makes me feel more confident to lean-in on the things that help to get my mind right again. Having something as mundane as being able to walk to the bathroom or stand in the shower being

taken away can be hard on anyone. Life can be an overwhelming and complicated thing, but you see, there is always a silver lining. You have stressors from work, family, friends, relationships and yourself. Then, if your forms of stress relief are taken from away, it can feel like your world is tumbling around you. But where is this silver lining you ask? How do you pick yourself back up? Refer to the four pillars. Physical fitness, there is nothing stopping you from moving your body in some way. You just need to figure out what you can do safely. Mental fitness allows time to focus on goals and aspirations. Life might seem dismal, but it is only temporary and your life will return to normal so be ready for that. Social fitness can be accomplished by reaching out to your friends. More importantly if you know of someone who is going through something check on them. Don’t just ask the same old “How are you doing?” Take the time to have a conversation with them about what's bothering them. For spiritual fitness, some might lean on their faith or religion, but I took this time to search inside myself. I worked on being kinder to myself, I wrote in a journal and I evaluated the people, things and places I wanted in my life. In my short time in the military I have learned the value of being “Fit to Fight” and I now know first-hand how important this concept is. Just like when the seasons change and the temperatures alter, so do the hats we wear. When life throws a curveball, you make changes to adjust, but who you are remains the same. No matter the struggle, never stop seeking what provides you the means to meet your physical, mental, social and spiritual fitness. Always be fit to fight.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jahshield Blades, 37th Airlift Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of loadmaster development, was coined as Airlifter of the Week on Jan. 12 for displaying exceptional leadership during his first six months at Ramstein Air Base. Blades, who grew up in Belize, joined the Air Force in 2015 as a loadmaster on C-17 aircraft until he moved to Ramstein and began working on C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. “I wanted to throw stuff out the back of airplanes all over the world,” Blades said. “When I saw what loadmasters actually did, it gave the job more meaning to me.” Outside of his primary position as a loadmaster, Blades serves the community by volunteering as a basketball coach for a traveling team in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Blades was inspired by his younger brother to coach and has enjoyed mentoring the players, a passion that has carried into his professional life as well. “Someone told me, ‘If you can mentor a person and mentor them
into being a solid person, they’re probably going to be really good at their job as well,’” Blades said. Blades sees this kind of change happening in the new Airmen that come through loadmaster development and aims to develop them as individuals as well. “He’s hit the ground running,” said Master Sgt. Colin Freeman, 37th Airlift Squadron operations superintendent. “It just shows the effort he puts in. It’s next level for someone who is a very junior noncommissioned officer and fresh out of Airman Leadership School. Blades is phenomenal with his process management and his ability to bring along his peers in that realm.” Blades said he could not be where he is now without the support of his wife, Senior Airman Kyra Blades. He and his wife grew up together in Belize and she enlisted after seeing the positive experience he had as part of the U.S. Air Force. Blades sees this achievement as a sign that he is on the right path, and that leadership recognizes him as someone who is trying to make change and impact the team in a positive way. “I’m grateful,” Blades said. “This is the reassurance of keep doing what you’re doing, it’s working.”

Host nation tour helps newcomers familiarize with Kaiserslautern area, German culture Story and photos by Nico Nagel and Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs There’s no question. Moving to a new country can be difficult and at times frightening for many of us. Trying to learn a new language, shopping in the city, buying groceries or even dining out at local restaurants — everything that wasn’t a big deal before will now be a new challenge. Taking away most of those fears is the Army Community Service’s Relocation Readiness Program’s ultimate goal. The program, which has received a lot of positive feedback, helps newcomers in the U.S Army Garrison Kaiserslautern area to have the best possible start, and helps them get more familiar with the Kaiserslautern area as well as the overall German culture. Stefan Wegner, ACS cross cultural adaptation technician, provides regular city tours that usually run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., two or three times a month. “The tour shows how easy it is to use the public transportation system in Germany and in Europe overall,” Wegner said. “It brings Soldiers, Civilians, and their families out of their bases/barracks and their homes, and gets them in contact with their host nation citizens. And finally, it brings like-minded U.S. citizens together.” We started our tour with an introduction on Kleber Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, where Stefan out-
lined our stops for the day. From there, we walked to the bus station and hopped on a bus to reach the city center. While waiting for our bus, Stefan showed us how to use the bus system and how to read the bus map. Our first stop was at the German-American Community Office, also known as GACO, which is a joint initiative between the 86th Airlift Wing, U.S. Army Garrison Rhineland-Pfalz, and the city of Kaiserslautern. The office serves as a medium of communication between the local community and members of the U.S. forces stationed in and around the Kaiserslautern Military Community. All GACO services are free and open to the general public. GACO’s goal is answer questions and address any concerns on German laws, practices, or local culture in general. The GACO has brochures that provide a variety of valuable information, such as ways to recycle, find a specific restaurant, or even find interesting things to do in the Kaiserslautern area. After visiting the GACO, we headed back to the bus station. Walking there, Stefan showed us the old ruins that are left over from Emperor Barbarossa’s era, and explained a few things about them. This is a great opportunity to learn more about medieval history! Our next stop was the Kaiserslautern Central Railway Station. Stefan explained to us how

to read the departure/arrival times and how to buy train tickets. This was very helpful because most newcomers do not have a car when they first move here, and might need to take the train for the first few weeks or even months here in Germany. Our last stop was at a German restaurant downtown Kaiserslautern, where we had the chance to taste some delicious German food. After lunch we got back on the bus and headed back to Kleber Kaserne. Stefan said more people should take advantage of the host nation tours, and encourages everyone to sign up for the German

Airmen assigned to the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron, and 171st Air Refueling Wing provided training on the Global ER-2875 de-icer truck to the Lithuanian Terminal Operations Squadron, at Šiauliai Air Base, Lithuania, Jan. 16-20. The Global ER-2875 de-icer is a truck used when temperatures drop below freezing, resulting in the accumulation of ice, snow, or frost on an aircraft’s surface. Glycol, an ingredient in antifreeze, is sprayed onto aircraft before a flight to ensure ice or snow has been removed, decreasing
the airflow disruption and making for a safe takeoff. The Lithuanian air force purchased the de-icer last year and was given basic guidance on how to use and operate the vehicle. However, the training did not include daily inspections, maintaining the vehicle or safety guidelines. As a result, the Lithuanian air force asked for support and was provided hands-on training by the 435th CRSS and 171st ARW. “Communicating and learning from our U.S. allies is important, especially when dealing with our new Global ER-2875 de-icer,” said

The training concluded with a road test where Lithuanians would operate the truck while someone operated the basket at height. “Without the in-depth training we provided, operating a truck that has the capability of reaching max heights of 78 feet can become unsafe very quickly,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. bility to de-ice T-tail aircraft expanding their operations from their conventional shaped aircraft, which are smaller than a C-130J Super Hercules model, to aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III and C-5M Super Galaxy. “Lithuania is one of our NATO allies in the Baltics, and we are always looking to improve upon and maintain relations with our NATO Allies, because the name of the game is interoperability, and when it comes the time we have to be able to work together and do so in a safe and efficient manner,” said Silva. “Working
with the Lithuanians has been nothing short of phenomenal, they are hard-working, professional and have a strong thirst for knowledge.” The 435th Contingency Response Group is U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa’s only expeditionary open-the-base force. The group provides a scalable, cross-functional, rapidly deployable force designed to assess and open airbases and perform initial airfield operations enabling rapid standup of combat operations anywhere in the United States European Command’s Area of Responsibility.

Vlissingen port operations showcase US-Netherlands, joint force interoperability by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command The Motor Vessel Leroy A. Mendonca delivered more than 1,200 vehicles and pieces of equipment, including M1 Abrams main battle tanks, Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and a range of wheeled vehicles belonging to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Calvary Division deployed to Europe, this week at the port in Vlissingen, Netherlands. The 2nd ABCT, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, replaces the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, as part of a regular rotation of forces to support the United States’ commitment to Atlantic Resolve. Additional equipment is scheduled to arrive during the coming weeks at ports in Aarhus, Denmark, and Riga, Latvia, for onward movement to Eastern Europe. “We appreciate the Netherlands’ strong dedication to enhancing military mobility,” said 21st Theater Sustainment Command Commanding General Maj. Gen. James Smith. “A strong NATO ally with excellent port facilities and infrastructure, today’s operation once again demonstrates our ability, with host nation support, to rapidly deploy equipment and personnel into and across the European continent.” Soldiers from 21st TSC’s 260th Movement Control Team, in coordination with the 598th Transportation Brigade (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command), host nation support and commercial organizations, discharged the vehicles and equipment, efficiently executing its reception, staging and onward movement (RSOM). According to 260th MCT Commander Capt. Karl Bliven, Vlissingen’s facilities and the Netherlands’ infrastructure make it possible to rapidly download an entire brigade’s worth of equipment

and quickly stage it for transport throughout the European theater. The Army’s use of cutting-edge technology enhances safety, speed, and in-transit visibility. “Once the vehicle gets offloaded from the ship, we as an MCT use what is called a DRAM (Distribution Retrograde Adaptive Planning and Execution Management) tablet to scan the military shipping labels on these vehicles,” said Bliven. “This will ensure that we know all the information relating to the vehicle and that it gets on the correct truck, barge or train to get to the final location. “It’s important that we do this smoothly and safely to allow for the equipment to arrive ready, in terms of maintenance, and in the most efficient way possible.”
Dutch Sea Port of Debarkation Commander Lt. Col. Peter van Dorst said experience working with the U.S. Army at Vlissingen is paying dividends, as this is the fourth time the port has supported an Atlantic Resolve rotation. “As a representative of the 13th Light Brigade from the Netherlands, we enjoy working together,” said van Dorst. “Cooperation with [598th] SDDC, 21st TSC and members of the 2nd Armored Combat Brigade is going very well. The Dutch military are already showing their experience in an operation like this, and it is going better each time.” 598th Transportation Brigade Commander Col. Robert Kellam said the Vlissingen port operation was an opportunity to exercise multiple
capabilities. “We’re building partnerships with the Dutch military, working with our partner organizations like 21st TSC and the 16th sustainment brigade.…to get all of the equipment on multiple modes of transportation, as well as establishing the LSA (logistics support area).” The Vlissingen port operation also demonstrated U.S. Joint Forces providing proactive and scalable options for priority missions. MV Leroy A. Mendonca is a U.S. Navy Military Sealift Command asset in support of DOD sealift missions worldwide. The 2nd ABCT “Black Jack Brigade” will fall under the command of U.S. Army V Corps. Also known as “Victory Corps,” V Corps is America’s forward deployed corps in Europe
and works alongside NATO Allies and regional security partners to provide combat-ready forces, execute joint and multinational training exercises, and retain command and control for all rotational and assigned units in the European theater. Since April 2014, U.S. Army Europe and Africa has led the Department of Defense’s Atlantic Resolve land efforts by bringing units based in the U.S. to Europe on a rotational basis. Deployed units are ready, combatcapable forces able to conduct extensive bilateral, joint, and multilateral training throughout its deployments to more than a dozen countries in Europe. Moreover, Atlantic Resolve enables the U.S. to enhance deterrence, increase readiness and support NATO.

21 Theater Sustainment Command, 598 Transportation Brigade make history in Denmark

Story and photo by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command The 21st Theater Sustainment Command received armored vehicles and equipment at the port of Aarhus, Denmark, for the first time in January, expanding the U.S. Army’s use of strategically located ports across Europe. The shipment was part of more than 2,500 equipment items assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, from Fort Hood, Texas, deployed to Europe for Atlantic Resolve. Additional equipment has been and will be received through ports in Vlissingen, Netherlands, and Riga, Latvia, in January. Denmark’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, Danish Defence Vice Chief of Joint Operations Gen. Jette Albinus and U.S. Embassy in Denmark’s Deputy Chief of Missions Jennifer Hall Godfrey were among local, national, military and media representatives who toured the port Jan. 16, and were briefed by 598th Transportation Brigade Commander (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command) Col. Robert Kellam and 260th Movement Control Team Commander Cpt. Karl Bliven. Citing a heightened security situation in the Baltic region and Europe as a whole EllemannJensen said Denmark’s geographical location makes it an impor-
tant staging and training area for U.S. and Allied Forces, and Aarhus was well-situated for the Atlantic Resolve deployment. “It’s home to Denmark’s largest business harbor,” said EllemannJensen. “The deployment through Aarhus is more than just unloading military equipment from a ship. It’s a signal of American solidarity with Europe for Ukraine and Denmark, with your NATO Allies in Europe. It shows that America, once again, takes an immense responsibility for peace in this part of the world, and we really appreciate this. “It demonstrates that Denmark, as one part of our commitment to NATO’s collective defense, is ready to welcome U.S. Forces and do whatever we can to make transit operations run as smooth as possible. At a time where…democratic values, maybe even universal values, are under pressure, it’s absolutely essential that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Allies.” The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 260th Movement Control Team received, staged and prepared nearly 700 vehicles and equipment items, including joint light tactical vehicles, Humvees and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles for onward movement to eastern Europe using commercial line-haul. According to Bliven, planning with host nation support and the Danish port authority began in November. “It’s an incredible feat
to move so much equipment across the ocean and across Europe,” said Bliven. “Since we’ve been here, the cooperation between the Danish military and also the civilian Danish logistic network has been smooth and easy. It’s a testament to how well we work together.” He said operating for the first time in Aarhus signals U.S. Army preparedness. “We want to utilize as many harbors in Europe as possible to show that we have that capability,” said Bliven. “We can have our equipment arrive anywhere in Europe and be able to conduct successful operations where we need to.” Key to the U.S. successfully accomplishing that objective is strong host nation support, according to Danish Defence Command Deputy Chief of Staff of Logistics, Col. Jens Riis-Vestergaard. “Its hugely important because of the current situation we are in with the illegal attack from Russia on Ukraine,” said RiisVestergaard. “The ability of the alliance of NATO to stand together to support each other is more important than ever. That’s really fundamental to this operation. “That is the entire reason why the U.S. is having this deployment through this harbor. The U.S. is [going to] different harbor areas in Europe to paint a picture that there is huge support from the U.S. to Europe and its allies. “Every activity we do together enhances interoperability. Interoperability begins with good
communication and then it goes all the way to common doctrine, common standards, ability to work together in the field eventually. An exercise like this is hugely supported from the top down all the way to the bottom to the tactical level. This is really good experience for the Danish Armed Forces.” 21st TSC Commanding General Maj. Gen. James Smith said the command has successfully used the port of Esbjerg, Denmark, in the past and intends to utilize the Danish port of Aalborg in the future. “In partnership with our Danish allies, we are developing the ability to conduct simultaneous port operations in Esbjerg, Aarhus and Aalborg, enhancing U.S. and NATO military mobility

ASA-Black Sea Fire Department wins IMCOM-E Fire Department of the Year, Military Officer of the Year, recognized by IMCOM leaders

Story and photos by Joshua Rojas for Army.mil The fire departments at Army Support Activity-Black Sea stationed on Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania and Novo Selo Training Area in Bulgaria were recently awarded the Installation Management Command Europe “Fire Department of the Year” award in the small category as well as the “Military Fire Officer of the Year” for their hard work and dedication among garrisons in Europe. The fire department at ASABlack Sea is responsible for providing fire protection and emergency services to the base and its surrounding areas, along with inspections throughout the installation to ensure fire prevention. Given the unique situation of the garrison having two installations in two different countries, as well as a recent increase in popula-
tion at both installations, the fire department has had to increase its efforts in fire prevention and fire protection for not only the garrison but its tenant units as well. The efforts displayed by the fire department with the increased demands over the last year were only one of the many reasons they were selected for the awards. Leaders of IMCOM and IMCOM-E Directorate of Emergency Services took the opportunity during a visit to ASA-Black Sea to recognize the Soldiers from the fire station. “Fire Department of the year in the small category is no small accomplishment, you are all doing wonderful things, and everyone sees it from the upper echelons down. So, thank you for what you do every day,” said Col. Jonathan Doyle, Provost Marshal/Protection Director IMCOM. The department is staffed by highly trained and experienced
firefighters who are equipped to handle a wide range of emergencies, including structure fires, vehicle fires, hazardous materials incidents, and more. “My team didn’t know they were up for an award; they work hard every day, and they do what they do because they love it. Knowing they worked as hard as they did not for an award but because they are passionate about their work says a lot about them,” said Cpt. Mark Gardner, Commander ASA-Black Sea Fire Department. In addition to the department’s award, one of its soldiers was also recognized for his outstanding work. Staff Sgt. Michael Wells won the “Fire Inspector of the Year” award. This award is given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional skill and performance in the field of fire inspection. “We are a 500 million dollar

When you think of the vastness of the program, the amount of responses, and what we touch on every continent of the world, it puts into perspective the accomplishment of Staff Sgt. Wells and his contribution to the overall mission.” Said Scott Delay, Senior Fire Chief IMCOM. The award recognizes Wells’ outstanding achievements in the European theater as a first-time fire inspector. “When we first deployed here, we found out there was no real fire prevention person in place, so I assumed that role having never done it before. As firefighters, we are there for fire protection and fire suppression, but something we do
that is always overlooked is how we educate people in fire prevention so that we can mitigate risk,” said Wells. “It feels awesome; it’s pretty intense, Cpt. Gardner put us in for these awards, and it means a lot that he thought I was doing a good enough job to compete for it; it feels great to be recognized for this.” The award and the recognition of one of its members is a testament to the dedication and excellence of the fire department at ASA-Black Sea. It is a recognition of the hard work and commitment of the firefighters and staff who work tirelessly to keep the base and its community safe. The ASA-Black Sea community is fortunate to have such a dedicated and professional fire department at both MK Air Base and NSTA.

DOD’s Safe Helpline has aided victims for a decade by David Vergun Department of Defense News For over a decade, the Defense Department’s Safe Helpline has provided a secure place for military survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones to get support and information 24/7. The Safe Helpline staff is uniquely trained to provide specialized support to survivors in the military and can help connect service members to resources in the community, said Nathan Galbreath, acting director of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. It’s not just a referral service, although referrals to other resources are an important part of what Safe Helpline does as part of crisis support, he added. A Safe Helpline user can access one-on-one support, peer-to-peer support, information, resources and self-care exercises to aid recovery. Calls to the Safe Helpline hotline service are anonymous, so the staff does not ask questions to confirm eligibility prior to providing support. Galbreath said anyone contacting Safe Helpline will receive crisis intervention support by Safe Helpline staff.

If, during the conversation, an individual indicates he or she is not affiliated with DOD and not eligible for Safe Helpline services, the hotline staff will provide them with contacts to appropriate civilian or military resources. This includes referral to the 24/7 National Sexual Assault Hotline for individuals from civilian communities nationwide. “Safe Helpline is often the first line of contact for survivors seeking support and information after experiencing a Sexual Assault,” said Tanya Banchs, senior victim assistance advisor of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. “Safe Helpline staff comes from a variety of backgrounds with a passion to help people. They are not within the military system, so every call is completely anonymous and confidential.” Safe Helpline is often a first step in the process to accessing support for survivors. Following an assault, survivors may be hesitant to talk to someone on base for a variety of reasons, including fear of retaliation, shame or guilt, she said. Talking to someone they don’t know and who doesn’t know them may be easier for survivors who have not previously disclosed an assault. The anonymity and confidentiality Safe Helpline offers can often make reaching out for support easier, Banchs said. The Safe Helpline staff understands survivors have different comfort levels with different responders, and many may not be ready to talk with someone face-to-face, she said. For those ready to connect with someone face-to-face, staff members can provide referrals to on-base resources, including sexual assault

response coordinators, sexual assault prevention and response victim advocates, military law enforcement, legal and mental health resources, she said. They can also provide referrals to local community resources. Safe Helpline has served more than 200,000 men and women over the last 10 years, providing support or advice and a path to healing from sexual assault. Visitor volume has grown steadily over the past 8 years — from fewer than 5,000 calls or chats during fiscal year 2012 to nearly 50,000 in FY 2020, according to Galbreath. Safe Helpline conducts an evaluation each fiscal year to measure program effectiveness. The evaluation uses aggregate, non-identifying data to understand Safe Helpline user characteristics and the concerns that brought them to the hotline. This can include information on whether survivors have chosen to report or not report an assault to law enforcement or their command, as well as if they intend to report. It also describes the barriers that Safe Helpline users have identified that prevented them from reporting. Information from annual evaluations helps the department provide necessary improvements in order to continually provide support and services to survivors, said Galbreath. The Safe Helpline was launched in 2011 as the result of the Defense Task Force on Sexual Assault in the Military. Recommendation 27 issued in December 2009 endorsed the establishment of a universal hotline to enhance victim care and facilitate reporting by victims. Safe Helpline serves as the department’s sole hotline for DOD members affected by sexual assault.

Official details situation in Ukraine by Jim Garamone Department of Defense News
The situation in Ukraine remains largely static, but there are bloody battles as Russian forces try to take Bakhmut and Ukrainian forces continue offensives against the Russian position near Kreminna, a senior defense official said speaking on background. The official said the situation in those two areas remains fluid with a lot of back and forth. Still, the Ukrainians retain their hold on Bakhmut, he said. The official detailed the results of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group held last week at Ramstein Air Base. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III convened the eighth version of the group, “which featured very productive discussions among senior defense leaders from nearly 50 allies and partner nations,” the official said. At the end of the meeting on Friday, Austin was able to discuss the largest tally of donations since the inception of the Contact Group in April 2022. The official said this is a tangible demonstration of the solidarity against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The United States also announced a $2.5 billion assistance package for Ukraine that features more Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, Stryker armored personnel carriers, more ammuni-

these new capabilities. “The security assistance donations constitute a variety of lethal capabilities from a multitude of countries, which again underscores the international community’s continued support for Ukraine’s immediate needs on the battlefield,” the official said. “Secretary Austin said in his opening remarks at the Contact Group, Russia is attempting to regroup, recruit and reequip. So, this is not a moment to slow down when it comes to supporting Ukraine and their defense.” Russia is sending in replacements for units that have been heavily attritted especially in the Bakhmut area, where the Russian military and its mercenaries have had particularly heavy casualties. “A key aspect is, despite these increased numbers in terms of replacements, reinforcements, there is not a significant enhancement in terms of the training of those forces,” the official said. “So again, ill-equipped, ill-trained, rushed to the battlefield.” The official said that over the full scope of the battlefield, Russia has pushed “tens of thousands” of troops into the fight. The official would not guess Russian casualties but did reiterate Army Gen. Mark A. Milley’s estimate of “well over 100,000 casualties” in the Russian forces since the war began in February 2022.

A common New Year’s resolution for many people is to lose weight, but losing weight is not easy (as most of us know). So if you are serious about losing weight, there are many resources at your military installation, through TRICARE or Military OneSource, to help you reach your weight loss goals. Explore your resources to help you with your goals Weight loss has proven to be more successful with professional counseling, shared accountability and enhanced motivation. Consider the following options to see what might be available at your local military installation. Depending on your location, a variety of in-person and virtual options are offered by these resources: You can personalize your weight loss goals with a registered dietitian nutritionist, or RDN, at your local military treatment facility. An RDN will look closely at your eating habits and help you set your weight loss goals. Usually he or she will meet with you over a series of sessions to help refine your weight loss goals with a target of losing about 1 to 1.5 pounds per week until you reach your goal. Contact your local MTF Nutrition Clinic to make an appointment for a group class or individual appointments. The Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness human performance teams of athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, physical and occupational therapists, cognitive performance specialists, and RDNs offer an interdisciplinary approach to meet your weight loss goals and optimize performance. Army/Armed Forces Wellness Centers offer a review of your current health habits and an exploration of your personal health and wellness goals. Services also include sleep and health education, exercise testing and prescription, stress management, and body composition testing. The AWC/ AFWC also offers metabolic testing to find out how many calories you need to meet your objectives. The ShipShape Program is an intensive weight management program for active-duty Sailors and Marines, Government civilians, retirees as well as family members who exceed healthy body weight or have weight-related health problems. This no-cost program consists of four sessions that cover the primary components of weight loss: nutrition, physical activity, mindset and sleep. Contact your local military treatment facility, command fitness leader or health promotion staff member for your ShipShape Program point of contact. The Air Force/Space Force offers a Best S.E.L.F program that addresses four components of lifestyle modification (nutrition, activity, mindfulness and sleep) to facilitate loss of weight and body fat. The curriculum consists of five sessions designed to help service members seeking to lose or maintain their weight and enjoy an overall healthy lifestyle. Several Air Force/Space Force locations also offer a 12-session group-lifestyle balance, or GLB, program called Healthcare to Health, or H2H. This program, led by specially trained lifestyle coaches, addresses obesity and has been proven to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes through weight reduction and increased physical activity. With assistance from a health professional, those seeking to lose weight can explore different options to determine what might
work best for them. While some individuals like having a very specific meal plan to follow, others may prefer a health coaching approach using SMART goals. A SMART goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely. SMART goals to consider for weight loss To track or not to track? Tracking your weight-loss program in an application or a journal creates awareness and can help you focus on the calories and macronutrients of your diet. Tracking can help you see eating patterns and is also useful in providing your RDN or health coach with appropriate feedback. You don’t have to track every day. Determine what works best for you to stay accountable and on track. A SMART goal might be: “My goal is to record all of my food and beverage choices and portions for at least 3 days each week for the next month.” Do you stress-eat? For many individuals, stress, anxiety, boredom, or using food as a reward can derail your weight loss progress. Strategies to avoid temptations can be addressed in a variety of ways. A SMART goal might be: “My goal is to not have tempting foods in the house or office. Starting with developing a grocery list and not purchasing any tempting foods for the next month.” Another strategy to short-circuit stress eating is to make a list of distractions – like going on a walk, starting a household chore, or calling a friend – that you can engage in when the temptation to stress-eat hits. What to drink? Liquid calories can add up quickly. In social situations, set a limit of how many alcoholic beverages you will drink during the event. Alcohol, juice, energy drinks, fancy coffees and regular sodas add extra calories to your plan. Limit yourself to one to two of these drinks and then transition to
water or a non-calorie beverage. Be particularly cautious with alcohol; not only are alcoholic drinks often high in calories, they can also lower your inhibitions and make you more likely to go back for seconds or cut a particularly large slice of dessert. A SMART goal might be: “My goal is to limit my alcohol consumption to one drink on one night a week for the next month.” Do you meal-prep? Spending some time on your days off to cook a few meals in advance can help with the “empty refrigerator syndrome.” Leftovers make a great lunch for the next day, or dinner the following night. Even if you don’t mealprep, spend some time considering your food for the week. Make a grocery list of choices that support your goals – like fresh fruit to pack with lunches, or healthy and quick breakfast options. Then fill your fridge with foods that encourage you to eat healthier. A SMART goal might be: “My goal is to prepare a healthy lunch with no more than 600 calories on the nights before at least 3 workdays per week.” How many fiber-rich foods are in your diet? Fiber is the best food to eat for weight loss. Fiber is the indigestible component of plant-based foods: fruits and veggies, legumes, whole grains, and certain seeds, such as chia seeds. Fiber slows down the rate of digestion, which is why we feel satisfied longer after a high-fiber meal and are less inclined to reach for a snack later on. A SMART goal might be: “My goal is to eat two fruits a day.” Are you well hydrated? Your body functions better when you are well hydrated. Choose low- or no-calorie beverages like plain water, water infused with fruit, or unsweetened tea or zero calorie beverages. A SMART goal might be “Keep a filled water bottle at my desk.” Trying new options or new resources will give you a boost toward meeting your goals for health. By June, your weight loss or healthrelated goals will match your New Year’s resolutions — a new reason to celebrate! Barcelona, Spain You might want to save Barcelona for the summer, but going to Catalonia’s capital city in the winter months can be a spectacular trip. Temperatures don’t get Germany-cold and what you will save in cash will be substantial. Consider the delicious Tapas restaurants (try Tapas 24) you can visit with some of the best food you will ever eat. The famous artist and architect Antoni Gaudi’s influence on the city is apparent. Don’t miss Gaudi Park (Parc Güell), Gaudi House Museum (La Pedrera) and the famous church La Sagrada Familia. The Gothic Quarter is an area to explore (try a Fat Tire Bike tour to save the legs). Munich, Germany Like other big European cities, Munich (München in German) will have a fraction of the crowds in winter time (although Christmas market time is busy, but worth it). The Bavarian capital has lots to do if you like historic buildings (see the Glockenspiel at Marienplatz) and churches (learn the story of the Devil’s Footprint at Frauenkirche). A trip to Munich isn’t complete without a stop at the Hofbraeuhaus to drink big beers and sing German songs (get the Schweinehaxe — delicious pork roasted on the bone) but you may want to try the lesser known Augustiner Braeustuben for great tasting beer and amazing food. Munich can be on the pricey side, so a winter trip can be what the doctor ordered for your wallet. Innsbruck, Austria If you are looking for an elegant city in the Alps, Innsbruck is it. Rome, Italy What can you say about Rome that hasn’t been said? It has to make your bucket list before you leave Europe. Summer can be extremely hot and busy, while winter temperatures are cool but comfortable. Think about a winter trip to Italy’s capital to see the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Vatican and endless list of amazing historical sites. Stay in a neighborhood slightly off the beaten path to experience more mom and pop restaurants for the real Lazio region fare. Reykjavik, Iceland It might seem odd to leave the cold only to go somewhere colder, but Iceland is so fantastic, the weather doesn’t even matter. The people are so warm, the terrain is so primal, and, if you are lucky, the
Northern Lights are so magical, that the frigid temperatures will not even matter! Fly into Reykjavik, take a shuttle to downtown, and take day trips to see the major sites. If you are lucky enough to have more than a couple days, try getting out to some other towns to stay; small towns, yes, but experiences you will not forget anytime soon! Helsinki, Finland Again with the cold winter getaway? Yes, but this time, fly into Helsinki, if you have time to hang out for a couple days, do so, but if not, hop on a small plane north to go to Ivalo, then take a short bus ride to Kakslauttanen (www.kakslauttanen.fi/en), for your magical stay in a glass igloo. There are a ton of activities, but really, do you need more than just laying there, looking up? Prague, Czech Republic Another amazing town, offering just about everything you could want: a castle on the hill, a river cutting through the middle of things, a funicular, great beer, great food, great people, amazing history, and gorgeous architecture. fitting for the entire family. Amsterdam, the Netherlands If you have not yet been, Amsterdam is simply one of the chillest cities you will ever visit (and not just because of all the “coffee” shops, which, by the way, you do not have to visit). Amsterdam is almost completely level, with all those incredibly quaint canals and bridges over them, gorgeous leaning buildings (there is a reason they do that), and amazing history. Amsterdam also happens to be one of, if not the most, diverse cities in all of Europe. Museums, bars, restaurants, canals, tours, and yes, coffee shops. Just awesome. Paris, France There’s no bad time of year to go to Paris. Sunny, rainy, snowy, overcast, warm, cold, it just doesn’t matter: the City of Lights is an amazing host. If it is your first time, you can walk to pretty much all the bigticket sites. If you are done with all that, there is no better Parisian experience than simply sitting at a cafe and watching Parisians go by. Paris also happens to have one of the best Christmas Markets; be sure to climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe for a view of the lights lining the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower all alit.
