Ramstein welcomes new command chief by 2nd Lt. Kay M. Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing welcomed its new command chief when Chief Master Sgt. James A. Morris and his family arrived at Ramstein at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Morris’ last assignment was with the 19th Airlift Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base, where he also served as command chief. Gen. C.K. Hyde, 86th AW commander, said he is very pleased to welcome the new command chief.
“We look forward to Chief Morris’ leadership and experience,” the general said. “He will be a great asset to the 86th Airlift Wing and our KMC family, ensuring our Airmen and their families are mission ready.” This is Morris’ fourth time being assigned to U.S. Air Forces in Europe and his second time being stationed at Ramstein. In fact, he witnessed the 1964th Communications Group transfer from Air Force Communications Command to the 86th Airlift Wing. As the new command chief, Morris is responsible for the health and wel-
fare, professional development, training, combat readiness, and good order and discipline of the enlisted personnel here. “My main focus is about professionalizing the enlisted force,” Morris said. Morris also said he wants to help the enlisted corps understand why each job is important to the mission of generating airpower. Leadership lessons from unlikely sources by Col. James Clapsaddle 86th Medical Group deputy commander
Commentary
While there may be some natural born leaders out there, I don’t think I’m one of them. I continuously strive to improve my leadership skills, gleaning leadership tips from wherever I can find them. Some come from odd sources, but they are still valuable. Below are a few lessons in leadership from “Harry Potter,” cats and dogs, former employees, and a former boss. 1. You can be a mentor or a Dementor: There is a scene in one of the “Harry Potter” movies in which these dark, ghostly, soul-sucking spirits called Dementors surround Hogwarts school. As one of the teachers explained what a Dementor was to Harry, I could not help thinking the description perfectly applied to one of my bosses at the time. Dementors are described as glorying in despair, and “they drain peace, hope and happiness out of the air around them. Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. You will be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life.” The word Dementor in “Harry Potter” comes from the Latin word for “madness” (as in dementia), but I enjoy seeing it as the opposite of mentor ― de-mentor. Whereas a de-mentor makes you feel inferior and saps you of hope, joy and accomplishment, a mentor relishes in bringing joy and success to his or her people. Mentors inspire you to do the same for others. Seek out such people, regardless of their rank or position, and you will have taken a first and important step toward improving your own leadership skills, for a positive example is the best instructor. 2. Share success. Own failure: One of my previous bosses, Lt. Gen. David “Fingers” Goldfein wrote a leadership book called “Sharing Success ― Owning Failure” (Great book. Free online.). The theme of the book is this: Leaders succeed only because their people make it possible. Thus, the people should get all the credit and praise. If the team fails, it is the leader’s burden. I’d like to add two comments to this theme: » Awards are only motivators if they are earned ― just ask my dog. Give people credit only when it is earned. To give someone praise when it is undeserved actually injures unit morale and hurts the leader’s credibility. Even

dogs know this. In a 2008 and 2009 experiment, researchers placed two dogs side-by-side. Both were asked to shake hands and were rewarded for this task with a piece of sausage. As the experiment progressed, both dogs continued to receive their treat, but only one dog was required to shake hands for it. The other was rewarded even though he did not work for it. Soon, the dog that was required to perform for the treat showed signs of stress, depression and jealousy. Eventually, the dog refused to shake at all. It seems that dogs have a sense of fairness. The lesson for leaders from these experiments is simple, but important: an award serves as an incentive to everybody in the unit if they perceive that it must be earned. Rewards are a disincentive to the unit if they are easily or unfairly given. Leaders mustn’t play favorites, fictionalize nomination packages or provide kudos to members who have not truly earned it. Others will recognize the unfairness and place less value in their own work and its potential rewards. The good news is that when praise is earned, the whole values it and appreciates it much more. » Limelight reflects. The phrase “giving someone the limelight” goes back to the early 1800s. Before the invention of electrical lighting, theaters were often lit by heating up a lump of quicklime (calcium oxide), which emitted an intense light hundreds of times brighter than the candles used previously. The actor on stage, now brilliantly lit and enjoying the focus of the audience, was said to be “in the limelight.” The phrase exists today when we praise people in front of others; we are putting them in the limelight. Limelight reflects literally and figuratively. In the old days, some of the limelight bounced off the stage and actors on it to illuminate the audience. Honor and praise are the same. They land on all those who observe it. I see this every Monday morning in our medical group staff meeting when my commander honors one of our MDG members. The commander has the member stand next to her while the supervisor describes the contribution they have made to the mission. The member then receives the commander’s coin and much deserved applause. That member is in the limelight, but all others in the room feel joy and pride with the member. We also appreciate the leader who took time to recognize the member. who deserve it enriches and evokes a pride that reflects upon all who participate in it. 3. Maintain dignity, yours and theirs: When I was a captain, I messed up on a financial report (I’ve never been good at math). The report went to the wing commander, who asked the group commander to correct it. This trickled down to my boss who was so embarrassed and incensed at the gaff that he stood me before his desk while he growled and barked about my ineptness. I don’t know how many synonyms there are for “stupid” in the thesaurus, but I was called every one of them. The session ended with my boss throwing my wadded up report at me. I left the office sick to my stomach. I was numb. After the incident, one of my staff members, Chuck, pulled me aside with a word of wisdom I’ll never forget. Chuck had 20 years activeduty experience and another 20 years of civil service, so he was experienced and wise. He said the chewing out was a valuable experience for me and that I will be a better leader because of it. He said I must never forget that “having dignity is one thing, but permitting those around you to maintain theirs is another, and it is the superior of the two. Remember how you feel at this moment. You must never cause others to feel this way. ” There will never be a situation in which you gain dignity by stripping someone of theirs. In almost 22 years of service, I’ve had many hundreds of people work for me. I’ve never had to resort to yelling, insulting, humiliating or demeaning another person to get the job done. In those times where I may have been angry and permitted too much of it to show, I left the encounter feeling foolish and sad, and I realized my anger likely did not have its desired effect. Leaders must seek to discipline, instruct and motivate their people while leaving their dignity intact. In so doing, you preserve your own. 4. Get out of the office and enjoy your people: My cat Bonkers was sick for 18 of its 19 years. Sick cats need pills. It is difficult to shove a pill down a cat’s throat; they fight back. Thank goodness for the invention of the Cat Pill Gun (Amazon.com, $7). The pill gun is a slender tube you jam into your cat’s mouth, press a button and it shoots the pill to the back of the cat’s throat where it is swallowed. Bonkers was sick, but

Eurocorps deploys from Ramstein Troops from Eurocorps deployed from Ramstein Tuesday, utilizing the capability of the Joint Mobility Processing Center. Eurocorps is a multinational standing Army corps available for the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance. Headquartered in Strasbourg, France, the force was created in May 1992, activated in October 1993 and declared operational in 1995. “Eurocorps was an idea that originated in 1952, when France and Germany tried to create a unified European army,” said French army Sergent-Chief Joseph Patray, a public affairs specialist assigned to Eurocorps. “Forces from Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Spain made up the force that deployed in order to support International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, Afghanistan,”
said 2nd Lt. Patrick Labbe, with the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron. The force deploys from Ramstein because of the services they offer to NATO and deploying service members. “Ramstein is a focal point for all NATO missions going to Afghanistan,” Labbe said. “With Eurocorps being an extension of NATO, we have the processes available for this sort of a deployment. Ramstein also possesses all of the facilities necessary for a large movement like this.” Because of facilities like the JMPC, Team Ramstein is able to strengthen alliances between NATO partners. “Deploying from Ramstein helps by building partnerships across our two organizations and increases interoperability within the U.S. and our NATO/Eurocorps partners,” Labbe said. “The JMPC is proud to support our joint effort for the mission in Afghanistan.”

Her cat actually likes the gun. She routinely feeds her cat tuna treats and peanut butter with it. She also left the gun next to the food bowl so it was always visible. Her cat associated the pill gun with mostly positive things. My cat associated the pill gun with only bad things. Then my Airman gave me some profound mentoring. She said, bosses are to Airmen like pill guns are to cats. If the only time a boss approaches you is to deliver something unpleasantlike criticism or a tasking, you get anxious when they appear at your doorstep. You learn to avoid them. But if the boss drops by routinely to deliver good news, smile, join a potluck or just to enjoy a conversation, then his or her presence will be associated with pleasure and likely evoke positive feelings and trust. To summarize: Being a “boss” is a position, but being a “leader” is a skill. Skills can be improved. The best leaders seek to do so by associating with positive role models and learning from other people’s wisdom or examples. These folks enjoy their jobs and their people, and their people, in turn, enjoy their jobs and their leader. Leading is a rewarding and joyous activity. I hope you find that joy.

he Ramstein Library received new special needs resources and is throwing a party with the Exceptional Family Member Program. Join us for an afterschool EFMPLibrary Resource Party from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Ramstein Library. The party will feature a story time, refreshments, crafts, giveaways and Pedro, the therapy dog. Pedro listens to children while they read out loud, reducing some of the anxiety of learning to read. During the party, families can meet Pedro and sign up for a time slot to read to Pedro during a future visit. The new resources are available to families, teachers and young people considering careers in helping people with special needs. reparations are underway to celebrate 60 years of the U.S. Air Force in Rheinland-Pfalz March 2. Planning and contributions are expected to come from every group in the 86th Airlift Wing, as well as from representatives from U.S. Air Forces in Europe and the state of RheinlandPfalz. The celebration will be a shared occasion for the host nation and U.S. Air Force. Ultimately, both parties place value in commemorating the past 60 years. “This celebration represents 60 years of German-American friendship and the developing process and interaction between the two countries,” said Claudia BeaversRapp, chief of 86th AW host nation. Maj. Kylene Ruth, the wing project officer for the event, also added, “This celebration is a great opportunity to recognize the very symbiotic relationship we have with our host nation.” Events scheduled for the celebration include a ceremony where a streamer will be presented to the wing by the minister president of
Rheinland-Pfalz. “We are being honored as a representative of U.S. Air Forces in Europe by the minister president, Kurt Beck,” BeaversRapp said. In Ramstein-Miesenbach, the opening of a historical exhibit “60 Years of Americans in RheinlandPfalz” at the Ramstein-Miesenbach Museum is also planned. The exhibit will feature Air Force and Army presence in Rheinland-Pfalz during the past 60 years. There is also a GermanAmerican concert to look forward to at the Haus des Bürgers in Ramstein. The concert will be featuring Direct Hit, a USAFE band formation, and Phoenix Foundation, the state youth jazz orchestra. The bands will play music that highlights the time eras of the past six decades. With all the buzz surrounding the upcoming occasion, Ruth explains why we choose to celebrate the event. “We take the time to celebrate because it helps to motivate and encourage a continuing relationship with our friends in Germany and Rheinland-Pfalz,” she said. “It is a unique and close relationship that will extend well beyond 60 years.”
It’s tax season at the Ramstein Tax Center T he Ramstein Tax Center opens Jan. 31 for the 2011 tax filing season. The tax center is located in the Ramstein Legal Office, Bldg. 2137, across from the southside gym.
This year’s program uses volunteer tax assistants who will guide customers in preparing their own tax return. The tax center uses the H&R Block At Home software program through the website MilitaryOneSource.com. In the tax center, customers will input their own tax data. Volunteer tax preparation advisers are available to answer any questions that might arise. Members may also access the H&R Block program for free through MilitaryOneSource.com from their home computer to prepare their taxes in the comfort of their own home. TAX CENTER FACTS: • The Ramstein Tax Center will open Jan. 31 and remain in operation until June 15. • The tax center can assist six people at a time. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday; and 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Friday. The tax center is located in the Ramstein Law Center, Bldg. 2137. • People can access the MilitaryOneSource.com website 24 hours a day from the convenience of their home computer to complete their taxes on their own. Rules restrict political activity by DOD personnel by Donna Miles American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON ― With election activity steadily picking up, defense officials are in the process of issuing regular election-year guidance to remind military and Department of Defense civilians that they’re subject to rules regulating their involvement in political activities. This issue ― one the department regularly addresses during election periods ― came to light earlier this week after an Army Reserve Soldier in uniform appeared endorsing a political candidate. Several sets of rules help to protect the integrity of the political process, DOD officials said. DOD Directive 1344.10 applies to members of the armed forces, whether they serve on active duty, as members of the Reserve components not on active duty, as National Guard members in a nonfederal status, and military retirees. In addition, the Hatch Act applies to federal civilian employees, and employees also are subject to widely published DOD guidance that discusses participation in political campaigns and elections. These rules are designed to prevent military members’ or federal civilian employees’ participation in political activities that imply ― or even appear to imply ― official sponsorship, approval or endorsement, officials said. The concern, they explained, is that actual or perceived partisanship could undermine the legitimacy of the military
profession and department. That’s not to imply, however, that military members and civilian employees can’t participate in politics. In fact, DOD has a longstanding policy of encouraging members to carry out the obligations of citizenship, officials said. DOD encourages its military and civilian members to register to vote and vote as they choose, they said. Both groups can sign nominating petitions for candidates and express their personal opinions about candidates and issues. However, officials emphasized, they can do so only if they don’t act as ― or aren’t perceived as ― representatives of the armed forces in carrying out these activities. Beyond that, the list of dos and don’ts differs depending on whether the employee is a member of the armed forces, a career civil service employee, a political appointee or a member of the career Senior Executive Service, officials said. Military members, for example, may attend political meetings or rallies only as spectators and not in uniform. They’re not permitted to make public political speeches, serve in any official capacity in partisan groups or participate in partisan political campaigns or conventions. They also are barred from engaging in any political activities while in uniform. A combat engineer assigned to the 416th Theater Engineer Company potentially violated these rules Jan. 3 when he stepped onto a stage at Ron Paul’s headquarters in Ankeny, Iowa, during the Iowa Caucus to offer a personal endorsement. Although
he was wearing his uniform, the Soldier was not in an active status at the time, Army Maj. Angela Wallace, an Army Reserve spokeswoman, confirmed. Wallace emphasized that the Soldier “stands alone in his opinions regarding his political affiliation and beliefs, and his statements and beliefs in no way reflect that of the Army Reserve.” His chain of command is aware of the issue and is considering appropriate disciplinary action to take, she said. Most civilian DOD employees, whose political activities are governed by the Hatch Act, are permitted to be active in and speak before political gatherings and serve as officers of political parties or partisan groups, officials said. These activities, however, cannot involve fundraising. Civilian employees also are permitted to manage campaigns, distribute literature, write political articles or serve as a spokesperson for a party or candidate. There are, however, exceptions to this, including but not limited to senior executive service. While the dos and don’ts concerning political activity may vary, the basic tenets hold true for all DOD employees. The bottom line, officials said, is that they should steer clear of any activity that may be reasonably viewed as directly or indirectly associating DOD or the military with a partisan political activity, or that “is otherwise contrary to the spirit or intent” of the rules described.

Roman Rocha Ramstein Area Defense Counsel You have just been notified by your first sergeant that both he and your commander suspect you have committed an offense and an investigation has commenced to determine facts about the stated allegations. You were also told to collect your thoughts and tomorrow you will come in to complete a statement at his office. Eventually you leave, and begin to make your way back to your office, but everything just doesn’t make sense. You just can’t recall what it is that you have done wrong. At one point you contemplate about all of the times your supervisor and commander have informed you to go and talk to your chain of command when you need assistance. But is that the right move for what you are dealing with currently? Or, perhaps you feel that you need to go to the base legal office to get help and get a lawyer. But is that even the right place to go when you have been informed that you have allegedly committed a crime? First, as a military member, remember your Article 31 rights ― they exist to protect you if you choose to invoke them. They provide that no person suspected of a criminal offense can be compelled to respond to any questions if the answers may indicate guilt. You also have the right to remain silent and may choose to contact an Area Defense Counsel to assist you. Furthermore, every service member who is interrogated as a suspect of an alleged offense by either the office of special investigations, security forces investigators, police, Polizei, the commander, first sergeant, your supervisor or any other

Any information you provide to the individuals mentioned above can be used as further evidence against you. Also, if you admit to wrongdoing, that alone can be used to find you guilty of an offense within the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Secondly, what is the difference between the ADC and the base legal office? That is a question that most clients or Airmen have when either the ADC or I speak to them. First, the ADC is not obligated to report to anyone within your chain of command. This ensures that our responsibility is to you ― our client. In other words, the ADC office has no obligation to assist the command ― our responsibility is to ensure your rights are protected. You have confidentiality with the ADC, the defense paralegal and other members of the defense team, which means anything you say to us will not and cannot be revealed to anyone. You do not have complete confidentiality with anyone else on base aside from us and the base chaplain’s office.
ADCs are licensed attorneys and all practice law in at least one of the 50 states. They will help with the defense of your case, whether it is a court-martial, nonjudicial punishment, administrative separation and demotion, or any other adverse action for which counsel for a military member is required or authorized. The base legal office assists your chain of command’s interests in good order and discipline. They also assist you with civilian matters such as wills, landlord issues and similar concerns. They do not assist you if you are suspected of a committing a criminal offense. So, now that you are fully aware of whom you can contact to support you and which office is the best to assist you on a case in which you allegedly committed a criminal offense, know your Article 31 rights. You never know when you will need to make a decision to invoke them. How to wear your green fleece cap Tech. Sgt. Christopher Ricks, 86th Security Forces Squadron, demonstrates the proper way to wear the green fleece cap with either the AECPS jacket or green fleece jacket. Service members should refer to AFI 6.2.8.1. The cap must fit snugly over the top of the head (tight fit). Adjust the cap so it may fit squarely on the head. Fold the edge of the cap all the way around, adjusting the crease so the folded edge is no more than 3 inches wide. The back of the cap should run across the nape of the neck and the front should rest within ½ inch of the eyebrows. The watch cap should reflect a diagonal line across the ears moving downward, from front to back. There should be no bunching and no sagging.

Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet Kitty Hawk came up with an idea to help the community in a positive and generous way. All flights were asked to bring a new toy to donate to the local orphanage. “It is a huge opportunity to give back to the community and to help it grow,” said Senior Master Sgt. Manny Piñeiro, from the first sergeant’s group on Ramstein, when asked about his thoughts about donating toys to the orphanage. “It is good for people to help out because it makes the community stronger.” Piñeiro was also asked what he thought of teenagers helping out with the donations. “I think it is an amazing thing what these young people are doing and how they take time out of their schedule to donate and help out the community. How they find time to help out and give is outstanding,” he said. “The drive was a great success and the cadets did an outstanding job, collecting two whole boxes of toys. HEIDELBERG, Germany ― A home-based business can be many things ― selling aroma candles, kitchen containers or pots and pans. Maybe a fingernail studio or trading on Internet auction sites is what you like best. But whatever your preference, you have to follow German and military home-based business policies. The main things to remember are that you cannot use your U.S. registered vehicle, the APO, the exchange, commissary or the tax relief program for a business. You may also need permission from your garrison commander and German tax office for your commercial venture. First, U.S. Forces plated vehicles are for your personal use only. Using one as part of a business is illegal. “Examples of abuse would be if you used your USAREUR-plated van to deliver goods to customers, transport people for money or carry pottery from Poland for resale over the Internet,” said Bill Johnson, director of the USAREUR Customs Executive Agency in Heidelberg. Register your business vehicle in the German system to be legal, he said. Second, packages you send or
receive as part of your business must go through a commercial shipping company or the German postal service. The APO system is a privilege for your personal use only and using it to send or receive business wares is not allowed. Third, you must declare any goods intended for resale to German customs when you bring them into the country. “If you buy commercial items in other countries, you must stop at the border and tell German customs your goods are for re-sale,” Johnson said. Goods sold in the post or base exchange, AAFES catalog, and commissary are tax-free, so you cannot buy anything there for your business either. Not surprisingly, using VAT forms to support your business is off-limits, too. Customs, tax and postal regulations need to be followed when you sell things over the Internet in Germany, too. “People who occasionally sell personal property via the Internet are usually good to go,” Johnson said. However, in most cases you will need customs clearance paperwork if you sell personal property to residents of Germany who are not U.S. military members, U.S. civilian employees or family members.
As members of the “forces,” U.S. personnel normally pay no taxes when they bring their personal property into Germany, which is why clearance and the payment of taxes is required. Selling goods over the Internet on a regular basis to make money is a completely different kettle of fish, Johnson said. The same rules about you using your U.S. registered vehicle, the APO, the PX/BX, commissary or the tax relief program for your business apply here, too. Those who don’t follow the rules risk receiving a hefty fine and tax demand from German customs or tax authorities and military administrative or civilian misconduct action, where applicable. So are you running a business? Do you need a German tax number or even a U.S. tax ID? “To answer these and other questions, talk to your installation commercial affairs office to be sure where you stand,” Johnson said. You can also download the pertinent directive, Army in Europe Regulation 210-70 (On-Post Commercial Solicitation). Price of US postage increases Sunday On Sunday, it will cost a penny more to mail letters to locations in the U.S. The new price increase will affect first-class mail, standard mail, periodicals, package services and extra services. Highlights of the new single-piece first-class mail pricing, effective Sunday, include: • Letters (1 oz.) ― 1 cent increase to 45 cents • Letters additional ounces ― unchanged at 20 cents • Postcards ― 3 cent increase to 32 cents • Letters to Canada or Mexico (1 oz.) ― 5 cent increase to 85 cents. • Letters to other international destinations ― 7 cent increase to $1.05 “This is the first price change for first-class mail stamps in more than two and a half years,” said Lionel Rivera, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe/ A6XM postal operations branch public affairs officer. The Forever stamps are sold at the first-class mail stamp postage rate at the time they are purchased. The advantages of a Forever stamp to the consumer include the ability to stock up on first class postage at the current rate and use them until your supply is exhausted.
“As postage rates increases, it is no longer necessary to buy 1 or 2 cent stamps to add to the old postage stamp,” Rivera said. For example, Forever stamps purchased prior to Sunday are valid for the full 45 cent first-class postage rate, despite having been purchased for 44 cents. Visit your local post office to purchase the Forever Stamps. “If you are looking for a specific stamp, the USPS Postal Store (online) offers a great selection of Forever stamps and they can still be purchased for 44 cents until Jan. 22,” Rivera said. Education can reduce parenting stress Story and photo by Rick Scavetta U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Last summer, shortly after Laura Shapland’s daughter Elizabeth was born, she joined a U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Army Community Service group for new parents. While the ACS Family Advocacy Prevention Program regularly offers several free classes and workshops to prevent and educate parents about child abuse and neglect, Shapland, 32, whose husband serves in the Air Force, had a far different motive in joining, she said. “I was simply looking for something social where I could share with and learn from other moms going through the same experiences,” Shapland said. It’s that interaction, plus access to community resources, that can help parents when stressful or difficult situations arise, said Yonette Davison, manager of the garrison’s FAP program. “Our ‘zero to three’ program is the cornerstone prevention program for community members,” Davison said. “New parent support also offers a home visiting program and ongoing classes such as Basic Training for New Parents and Boot Camp for Dads.” The FAP program also offers several stress and anger management classes. Courses are also available for couples who want marriage enrichment, she said. In the new mom’s group, coordinators organize interesting and informa-

tive guest speakers, Shapland said. Since then, the program has offered some unique opportunities, to include baby massage, baby signing, physical development, new mom exercise and pediatric dentistry. “While moms are learning, the little ones are playing together on the floor or in our laps,” Shapland said. “There’s usually someone with a baby a little bigger than yours who can answer your questions, and equally
someone with questions of their own.” The KMC, like any other U.S. military community, sees cases of child abuse - often in the form of discipline that goes too far and bruises or marks are left on the child, said Lt. Col. Lars Zetterstrom, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern. “This is a problem that we can stem by talking about it. Turning a blind eye or avoiding the problem is unacceptable,” Zetterstrom said. “We need
to know how to identify the problem and where to turn to for help.” Military community members found to be most at risk are younger parents, age 18 to 25, with their first child and on their first enlistment in the Army, Davison said. “But, anyone can take advantages of these free resources,” she said. Story and photo by Hayley Thompson Ramstein High School Culinary arts is a program at Ramstein High School that attracts many students. The class offers the instruction and practice needed to become a quality cook in the kitchen. Taught by Chef Larry Prine, the class is highly focused on the development of fundamental cooking skills as well as having fun. Prine is a more than a qualified teacher to fill the position of chef. He comes to Ramstein with more than 20 years of teaching experience, 12 of those years have been dedicated to teaching students the art of cooking. Prine knows that the students come to the culinary class for more than just a textbook instruction, that “what students want to do is hands on practice. They don’t want to just read about it in a book, they want to go and make it.” The class in general is extremely beneficial to the students, the community and the faculty at Ramstein High School. “One of the most important aspects of the class is that the class teaches life skills that the students can use for the rest of their lives,” Prine said.

The culinary class largely benefits the students. Students in the culinary class love the experience that they are being given. “Since I grew up in restaurants and since I enjoy working in restaurants this class is really fun. The class has also made me more popular since we cook such good food,” said Taylor Nuckolls, a junior at Ramstein High school. The culinary class also benefits the community as well. Since he started teaching at Ramstein, Prine has reached out to several of the local volunteer programs such as the Fisher House. Every so often, the class will make dishes to take to the Fisher House to give those who live there a delicious meal. Prine not only reaches out to volunteer programs, but the faculty and staff of Ramstein High School as well. He invites a handful of faculty from the high school over to his house once a month to learn how to cook. “The teachers love to do it. By the time we sit down to eat dessert it is almost 11 p.m. because we just have so much fun,” he said when asked about the faculty cooking lessons. Prine pours himself into all aspects

of the class in order to guarantee that the students get the education they deserve. “Teaching this class is not just my job, it has become my life,” he said. The class is a two-period class at Ramstein High School. Nuckolls calls the class, “three hours of eating, cooking and having fun.” Culinary Arts I and Culinary Arts II are two-period classes at Ramstein that
take place on opposite days. Culinary Arts I is for first-year students and takes place during the R6-R7 block period. Certified registered nurse anesthetists provide general and regional anesthesia for all types of patients, including general anesthesia for surgery in the operating room, sedation for procedures in the emergency room, and epidurals for labor pain control in the labor and delivery unit. Since the late 1800s, nurses have been providing anesthesia care to patients having surgery and other medical procedures. Today, most anesthetics in the U.S. are provided by a CRNA with nearly 100 percent of anesthetics in rural areas being performed by a CRNA. Nurses have been providing anesthesia for Soldiers since the Civil War and have been the predominant military anesthesia provider from World War I to current conflicts in the Middle East. Soldier donates bone marrow, saves life by 2nd Lt. Jean P. Tomte 10th AAMDC Public Affairs
C
apt. Brent Johnson, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 10th Army and Air Missile Defense Command, never had a second thought after registering in a bone marrow donor drive. Seven years later, he was notified that he was a preliminary match to someone he has never met who was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. Suddenly Johnson was presented with an opportunity to save a life. In bone marrow procedures, it is essential that the donor perfectly match the recipient. Blood tests are conducted to ensure there will be a suitable genetic match. The donor’s healthy cells are then infiltrated into the patient’s blood stream where bone marrow will regenerate. The C.W. Bill Young/Department of Defense Marrow Donor Center contacted Johnson to ask if he could provide a blood sample to determine if he was a perfect match for a recipient. “I went to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for a blood test. A couple weeks later a lady from C.W. Bill Young called me and said, ‘Congratulations, you are the perfect match.’ The recipient is a 14-year-old boy from Sweden,” Johnson said. “He suffered from severe aplastic anemia.”
Aplastic anemia is a blood disorder in which the body’s bone marrow does not make enough new blood cells. “In the back of my mind, I was just thinking about changing someone’s life who never had a chance to play sports, someone who has been stuck in the hospital and someone who could not hang out with friends,” Johnson said when asked if he was concerned about the surgery. “When Brent said he was going to do this I wasn’t surprised. It was something that fit his personality,” said his former commander, Col. Anthony English. “That’s just him, that’s his personality. Everything he did was for someone else. It made my heart feel good. He’s just a great young leader.” English, currently the deputy G3 operations officer for U.S. Army Europe, pointed toward the Army values. “He came to me and said that he had registered as a bone marrow donor and that he was a match and that he was going to go through with it,” English said. “When you think about it, a decision like that reflects on the Army values perfectly. It’s personal courage.” Serving as English’s adjacent when the unit was the 357th Air Missile Defense, Johnson didn’t necessarily look at it that way. “It is a humbling experience to help

somebody out when you know you are directly helping somebody,” he said. “Although he knew it would be uncomfortable, all he cared about was doing the right thing and changing someone’s life,” said Sgt. 1st Class Malcolm Mickler, Johnson’s noncommissioned officer in charge. The procedure involved the removal of bone marrow from the hip bone via two syringes. While painful, it didn’t involve Johnson losing much work or time. “I arrived at Georgetown University
a week before the procedure. They removed a pint of my blood and returned it to me during the procedure. After the procedure, I had a day of recovery and then flew back to Germany the next day,” he said. He arrived back in Europe on a Saturday and was back at work on Monday. Would he do it again? “Oh, yeah, definitely. It wasn’t that bad,” he said. “I went into it thinking it was going to be the worst pain of my life. But really, it wasn’t that bad.”

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. ― Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Roy addressed a capacity crowd of Airmen and civilians at the Langley Theater Jan. 11 and covered a wide variety of key Air Force issues. Roy spoke on topics such as training, force management programs and how the current budget will affect operations. He also took questions from Airmen on promotion, mentorship, retirement and commissioning programs. “Hopefully you’ve all had a chance to hear the new defense strategy. If you haven’t, I would challenge you to go and read it,” said Roy, offering his support for the president’s recent announcement that the military will refocus its efforts on the AsiaPacific region and cyber warfare. Roy said there are many changes coming to how the military operates at home and abroad and how most of these changes are driven by the current budget constraints facing the entire nation, including the $487 billion cut to defense spending over the next 10 years.
“Will that change the way we operate? You bet it will, but I like the way the chief of staff of the Air Force, Gen. (Norton) Schwartz, says it: ‘You’ve got to understand that we are a $100 billion Air Force, and we are the best Air Force there is.’” As always, Roy said his highest priority is taking care of the men and women who serve in the greatest Air Force the world has ever known. “What I’m concerned about is what education, training and experiences would be taken away from you. I’ve got to make sure we continue to develop you in such a way that you are prepared for the future,” Roy said. Because of the current financial issues facing the Air Force, Roy said only 45 percent of the budget for travel for enlisted professional military education is currently funded. Additionally, Col. Stewart Price, Air Education and Training’s Barnes Center commander, recently announced that travel for senior leaders to attend EPME graduations for their personnel has been permanently suspended. These changes are only the beginning of how EPME will transform in the coming years. “One of the things that we are trying to do is what
I call EPME Next. You will hear more about that soon, but what I will tell you is that we are trying to make sure that you continue to get what I call the core,” said Roy, referring to basic training and technical schools. He said those are the foundation of our culture and what enables us to achieve monumental success on a daily basis. “If you are working on the flightline on the F-22 (Raptor), the most modern aircraft we have in the inventory today, and you have not been to tech school and learned the fundamentals of maintaining that thing, do you think we are going to get the same level of expertise? I don’t think so. So we’ve got to hold onto that core,” Roy said. On a lighter note, Roy said training opportunities for EPME have been recently designated internationally. “We have now opened up a couple of schools across the globe that we accept as equivalent courses to our NCO Academy, and particularly our Senior NCO Academy,” said Roy, dropping hints at potential opportunities in Canada, South America, Singapore, New Zealand and Africa. Kingfish produce most exciting meets of season by Julio Quinones Kaiserslautern Kingfish “If you win something and you haven’t put everything into it, you haven’t actually achieved anything at all,” said one gold medalist swimmer. “When you’ve had to work hard for something and you’ve got the best you can out of yourself on that given day, that’s where you get satisfaction from,” Ian Thorpe said. For all the swimmers of the Kaiserslautern Kingfish Swim Team, working hard is just what they do. And, it’s their hard work that has brought so much success for the 2011-2012 season. Few teams have gone undefeated for an entire season and the Kaiserslautern Kingfish Swim Team can add their name to the prestigious few. The Kingfish hold a perfect 13-0 record, eliminating every team in their path with an average margin of victory of 285 points. They also boast a phenomenal 56 swimmers with championship qualifying times ready to challenge the league’s best this February at the European Forces Swim League championship meet in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Jan. 8 and 14 marked two of the most exciting swim competitions of the year. First, on Jan. 8 the Kingfish traveled to the Hallenbad Am Grossen Sand in Mainz-Mombach to compete in “The Battle in the Bubble.” The competition would be the last long course meet of the season and the Kingfish did not disappoint. The Kingfish rallied behind team captains Conner Davis, 17, and Andy Cummin’s, 17, three first place finishes with support from Jessica Kafer, 18, Lexy Meints, 15, Peter Cummin, 15, Danielle Davis, 12, and Kathleen Nicholson, 8, ― all securing three first place finishes of their own. The Kingfish won a first place team victory with 1,070 points followed by the Stuttgart Piranhas’ 1,026 points and at a close third, the host Wiesbaden Wahoos with 1,019 points. The meet would showcase many
outstanding individual bests with 40 swimmers from the Kingfish team finishing with a first place finish. Jan. 14 took the Kingfish into Stuttgart where they battled their division rivals, the Stuttgart Piranhas. The meet was a back and forth affair with the two teams battling for the win. Heading into event 37, the Kingfish held a narrow 389-364 lead on the host Piranhas. The 200 meter freestyle relays would be the deciding factor of the meet with each relay worth seven points. The Piranhas needed all four relay victories to win the completion. With their backs against the wall both teams came out very motivated and ready to settle the score. The noise in the pool was deafening. Both teams were screaming out their team chants. All of the swimmers were anxious to take their place in the winner’s column. There were four mixed-age groups ready to compete: the 10 and under, the 11/12, 13/14, and the 15-19 year groups. The saviors of the meet would be most surprising as the 10 and under group led by Anthony Cummin, 9, Jocelyn Choi, 9, Alexa Hutton, 10, and Julia Plescha, 10, would prove the resolve of the Kaiserslautern Kingfish. It was their first place win that would secure the team victory and carry on the winning ways of the team. The Kingfish added an exclamation point to the competition as Andy, Lexy, Rachel Plescha, 16, and Connor Davis, 17, would win the 15-19 year category. The final score was Kingfish 403, Stuttgart 378. “That was the closest, most exciting meet of the season. Our kids really should be proud of the job they did,” said Coach Bob Clinton. The Kingfish win over Stuttgart was also made possible by Macy Cabiness, 18, Andrew Hokaj, 14, Alexa Hutton, 10, Kathleen Nicholson, 8, and Ida Peterson’s, 8, three first place finishes in individual competition.
