Ribbon cutting marks opening of new intelligent lockers for SSPO patrons Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Regan Spinner 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Postal workers from the 786th Force Support Squadron, 86th Force Support Squadron and leadership from across Ramstein Air Base gathered for the unveiling of new intelligent lockers at the Southside Post Office on Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 8. The ribbon cutting kicked off the use of intelligent lockers to the base populace, specifically for Southside dorm Airmen and will give them a choice to use one of the 140 lockers instead of coming up to the parcel pickup window. “Dorm Airmen are going to be able to come and use the intelligent lockers whenever they want,” said Tech. Sgt. Ryan, 786th Force Support Squadron Southside Post Office postmaster. “They will have 24-hour access to the lockers versus our normal pickup time from ten to five.” Postal workers got to work in early 2022 with funding providSee RIBBON CUTTING, Page 3

COMMENTARY: US aims to prevent conflict in space, other domains through deterrence

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 Starlink satellites launches from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, FL, Jan. 7.

by David Vergun Department of Defense News Russia and China are deploying capabilities that can target GPS and other vital space-based systems in an effort to degrade the military space advantage of the U.S. and its allies, said Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks. Hicks made the remarks today in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as Army Gen. James H. Dickinson relinquished command of U.S. Space Command to Space Force Gen. Stephen N. Whiting. U.S. Space Command is crucial in helping to develop, innovate, promote and practice supporting

the safety, stability, security and sustainability of the space domain, she said. “I want to be clear: Conflict is not inevitable in space or anywhere else. And the United States of America is committed to preventing conflict through deterrence by making clear to our competitors that the costs of aggression would far outweigh any conceivable benefits,” Hicks said. Hicks pointed out how the Defense Department has launched an ever-growing constellation of smaller, more resilient, lower-cost satellites than were ever previously deployed. “America’s dynamic commercial space industry enables it and

also enables the United States to significantly outpace [China’s] growth in space launches and payloads over the last five years,” she said. From 2019 to 2023, China doubled its number of annual space launches and more than tripled how many payloads it put into orbit. That’s real growth, she said. But over that same time, American space launches per year more than quadrupled, while U.S. payloads launched increased by nearly 13 times, she said. In 2023, China launched 240 payloads to orbit while the U.S. lofted over 2,500 payloads, she said. “As DOD invests more in space,

the whole of America’s lead will only grow,” she said. Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Navy Adm. Christopher W. Grady, who also spoke at the ceremony, said that the dedicated 18,000 members of Space Command exemplify U.S. commitment to space excellence and leadership as they pioneer new frontiers, strengthen international partnerships and safeguard the nation’s interest in the limitless expanse of space. “Recent conflicts have starkly illustrated the indispensable role of space in our nation’s defense capabilities. And, in my view, space has emerged as our most essential warfighting domain — integral to

our national security, our coalition interoperability and our global stability,” he said. Hicks and Grady lauded Dickinson’s leadership and achievements at U.S. Space Command and noted that Whiting is more than qualified to build on his predecessor’s accomplishments. Hicks and Grady also mentioned the support the generals received from their wives, who also supported other military families. Dickinson mentioned the tremendous support his command received from allies, partners, industry and academia. Whiting said he’d continue building on those relationships.

James Cunningham, 86th Mission Support Group commander. “I just want to say a heartfelt thank you for all the hours that went in behind this.” Out of about 2,700 patrons, the SSPO hopes to give half of them the ability to use the intelligent lockers and hopefully downsize the typical pickup line. “Anything we can do to use technology to help reduce customer wait is exactly the way that the Air Force needs to move,” said Cunningham. For those interested in using the lockers, a sign up form will be provided at the SSPO customer service desk. An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31, by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate. The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses. Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.

KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates. The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses. Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members. You may have been in the area for a while and have already been able to pick up some German. On the other hand, you may be brand new to the region, not realizing that numerous German words have found their way into English and are used on a daily basis. The famous German autobahn, for example, just means a lane for autos and you can easily find yourself in a daily stau at one of the entry points at a military installation every morning. Stau is an abbreviation for “stehende Autos,” meaning standing cars. Maybe you become angry when your car goes kaputt or runs out of diesel, named after Rudolf Diesel, the German inventor of these engines. You might say gesundheit, which means health, when someone sneezes. You surely went to kindergarten before starting school or enjoyed a refreshment at a biergarten or a fest in the summer. Achtung means “attention” and the rock group U2 used it to name its album “Achtung Baby.” If something occurs very quickly, the word blitz might be used to describe it, for example as in blitzkrieg. Blitz means lightning and krieg means war in German. Panzer might be more common to talk about tanks in military terminology and an installation in Kaiserslautern east is named Panzer Kaserne. Who hasn’t tasted typical German sauerkraut, meaning sour cabbage, or had a bite of a bratwurst? A smaller sausage called wiener, after its origin

in Vienna is also common, but beware, the exact same sausage is called frankfurter in Austria. There’s nothing softer and saltier than an original German bretzel and during the Middle Ages, a baker could easily find himself in a dungeon if his baked goods didn’t have the required size. Other delicatessen, derived from German and comprised of delikat (delicious) and essen (to eat) may include noodles (from nudel) or soup (from suppe). In German a hamburger refers to a person from the city of Hamburg, but this GermanEnglish name has also found its way into daily German to describe a meat patty between a bun. Pumpernickel is a dark, compressed bread and lager refers to a beer that is stored (lagern) for a long time prior to consumption. Have you ever tried a shot glass of a distilled beverage with a high alcohol content called schnaps or tasted a spritz mixed with wine? A strudel is a delicious pastry but can also mean a whirlpool effect in bodies of water. Several dog breeds, such as the dachshund, the schnauzer or the rottweiler have German origins, and even the small furry pet called a hamster is a German word. Sports fans might be fond of abseiling, which literally means descending by means of a rope, while a carabiner is a metal hook, first used climbing rocks or mountains. If you are far out in the countryside you might be in the hinterland, possibly with a rucksack on your back and enjoying your wanderlust, or love of traveling and experiencing new sights and people.

The word kitsch is used to describe items of low taste or quality. You might feel a bit of angst if you encounter your doppelgänger, a person that looks exactly like you. Some older readers might remember the movie “Poltergeist,” which is derived from poltern, meaning to make loud and scary noises and geist, which is a ghost. On a more positive note, you might discover that you have a wunderkind, a child with a special talent or full of wonders. The waltz, German version Walzer, is a formal dance and you could meet men in lederhosen dancing next to edelweiss, white flowers common in the Alps, derived from “edel” meaning elegant and “weiss” for the color. Count Zeppelin of Berlin was the inventor of the large airship and may have inspired a famous rock band to take off like a zeppelin. Your schadenfreude, if you take pleasure from another’s misfortune, may be great, especially if you don’t like the person. The weltschmerz word was coined by German author Jean Paul, indicating the impossible ability of the mind to comprehend our physical reality. The direct German translation is “world pain.” And, maybe it’s just a zeitgeist, literally “time ghost,” when referring to a trend or overall spirit, that languages mix together over time and speakers use words from other sources to talk about daily things. One humorous anglicization in German is the fact that being able to carry around a mobile phone in your hand may be rather handy, and therefore Germans simply refer to the device as a “Handy.”

Sailor-turned-astronaut compares submarine, space station life by Katie Lange Department of Defense News For NASA astronaut Stephen Bowen, it was the smell that immediately struck him as familiar. “It has a unique odor,” he said of the first time he entered the International Space Station. “It has a little tinge of everything.” It wasn’t the actual scents in the air, per se; the familiarity was more reminiscent of the many submarines he served on during his Navy career. “I think you’ll find that when submariners retire, their spouses and family members will toss away all of their clothes because it has a very lingering odor,” Bowen said of submarine deployments. “But you get used to it very quickly.” Bowen, a 1986 graduate of the Naval Academy, was chosen in 2000 to be the first submarine officer ever selected as a NASA astronaut. Between 2008 and 2011, he was part of three delivery missions to the ISS. It was on those missions that he learned the technology and environment of a space station were quite like that of a submarine. “I could see the correlations,” Bowen said. “When I … first visited the space station on a shuttle flight, I knew the systems were the same. On my first mission, we brought up a whole lot of habitation and environmental control systems … and some of the technologies are exactly the same that we had on submarines.” One example? The shuttle’s oxygen generator, which produces breathable air for the crew. “When I first visited the company that made it, they pulled me aside and said, ‘Hey, do you want to see your Virginia-class [submarine] oxygen generator?’ And I said, ‘Yeah!’ And there it was. It was the exact same technology,” Bowen said.

Living and experimenting on the ISS Last year, the seasoned astronaut took part in his biggest mission yet — commanding a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft as part of NASA’s sixth commercial crew rotation mission to the ISS. Bowen and three others — American Warren “Woody” Hoburg, United Arab Emirates astronaut Sultan Alneyadi and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev — launched March 2, 2023, and returned to Earth on Sept. 4 after 185 days of living aboard the space station. Bowen said aside from the smell, the pace of the operation was also like that of a submarine deployment. “You go to work every day… In this case, you’re doing a lot of science. You have your required exercise you do every single day, and every day … we have a different set of items on the schedule,” Bowen explained. “You do maintenance on top of that, and then every so often, there’s a peak of excitement where you’ve got an operation scheduled, like an EVA [extravehicular activity]. The week leading up to an EVA and then immediately following, you’re just really busy. You’re really focused on that event. It’s similar on submarines when we do some operations. So, when I landed [back on Earth], I was like, ‘Wow, that really felt like a submarine deployment.’” When it comes to the science, there were hundreds of experiments and demonstrations on which Bowen and his fellow crew members worked. The team conducted a student robotics challenge, NASA said, and they released a satellite created by students at the University of Saskatchewan that tested a new radiation and protection system. While several experiments took no work on their part, the team had

to maintain, operate and participate in others. One, called Cardinal Heart 2.0, used an artificial beating heart to test whether certain drugs could reduce or prevent microgravity-induced changes to heart cell function and gene expression, which could damage an astronaut’s heart. “It was really kind of cool,” Bowen said. “Sultan [Alneyadi] was looking through the microscope, and you could hear the voice of the primary investigator just getting really excited on the other end of the line because you can see a heart cell beating.” He said there was also a biofabrication facility in which they were able to 3D print a replica of a knee’s meniscus. “What’s way cool about that is because you’re in a microgravity environment, you can do things you can’t do on Earth. If you tried to do this on Earth, it would just collapse — the structure would collapse on itself,” Bowen said. “But in orbit, as we’re circling the Earth, that environment allows us to print each layer, and it stays that way. Then it becomes an actual piece of tissue, which is absolutely amazing.” He said they also do a lot of combustion science and material science. Technically, he said the astronauts themselves were an experiment. “We do a lot of biological sampling, and even in orbit, we do some processing for those samples. Ultimately, that all comes back down and helps us understand how the human body reacts in this environment,” Bowen said. “Sometimes I think it’s hard for people to grasp that what we’re doing in orbit, the purpose from it is for here on Earth. By eliminating the gravity component, we’re better understanding the processes of all these systems.” Having completed 10 spacewalks

Space Transportation System 126 crewmen Eric Boe, Chris Ferguson, Robert Kimbrough and Stephen Bowen, left to right, pose in front of the Space Shuttle Endeavour following its landing, Nov. 30, 2008.

over the past 15 years, Bowen is tied with four others for the record for most excursions by a U.S. astronaut. He ranks third on the all-time list for cumulative hours of spacewalking at nearly 66 hours. And while Bowen said the views from the ISS handily beat out those offered by a submarine, when it comes to culinary creations, submarines still take first place. “We always had great food on submarines,” he said. “They worked very hard to ensure that our food on board the space station is really high quality, but you’re just kind of limited by the technology. We don’t cook in space. We basically reheat and rehydrate, so it’s hard, but they do a really good job.” From the Navy to NASA Bowen said that as a kid, he dreamed of being an engineer, which led him to the Naval Academy and submarines. He said he applied for NASA on a whim, not thinking he would ever be selected. “When I applied, we had about 8,000 applicants, and we had 17 selected,” he said. When Bowen learned he made the cut, he said he actually considered turning it down. “When they called me, I was a pre-commissioning unit executive officer for Virginia [class subma-

rines], and it was so exciting to be a part of a crew establishing the initial operating capabilities of a submarine,” he explained. “For a moment, I almost thought, ‘I’ll say no,’ because we were looking forward to moving back up to Connecticut. But I’m very, very happy I said yes.” While many astronauts have military backgrounds, not all do. Bowen said the team aspect of his military experience gave him a leg up during his space endeavors. “When we select a [astronaut] class, that’s one of the things we look for in the non-military: have they participated in something where you have to be a part of a team?” he said. “That teamwork, that leadership and followership … is really important.” Bowen said as space becomes more accessible, more opportunities will arise for those hoping to become an astronaut. “There’s going to be other companies out there looking for people with skills for becoming an astronaut to fulfill their needs as we commercialize low-Earth orbit, and it’s really exciting to realize that we’re just right on that edge,” he said. So, if your dream is to one day go to space, Bowen offered this recommendation: “If you’re interested, apply. The worst they can say is no.”

Seeking to make a career of her artistic talent — and leaning towards a career as an academic, she earned a bachelor’s in fine art from The South Carolina School of Arts at Anderson University and a master’s in art therapy from George Washington University. During her second year of graduate school, she fortuitously landed an internship with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic. Cantrell loved the work, the patients, and the mission. “I’ve always had a natural inclination for working with children, not directing them but encouraging them to be creative and explore their own identities,” shared Cantrell. Now a staff pediatric art therapist with the PHOC, Cantrell starts her day in a morning huddle with doctors, social workers, and other clinical staff members. “Each day is different in our clinic, and I aim to know what treatment and/or procedures patients are receiving so that I may determine how to orient my schedule,” said Cantrell, determined to create a tailored approach to provide artistic interventions for each patient.

Cultivating community When working indoors, Cantrell conducts art therapy at the art table, on an easel, or in patients’ rooms. Her goal is to embrace the flow of the clinic while ensuring patients have a creative outlet leading to better health. “Sometimes patients want to work as a group or side by side at the art table; other times I’m working with a sibling or family group,” explained Cantrell, who admires the sense of community that pediatric patients share. Cantrell cultivates community by promoting interaction among patients, family, and staff — even

encouraging participation from nurses and doctors, testing their artistic acuity, and inviting critiques from this community of artists. “Contrary to a common misconception that art therapy is solely about coloring and having fun, its primary goal in the Pediatric HematologyOncology clinic is to offer patients a space for self-expression and exploration, tailored to their needs,” emphasized Cantrell, protective of the meaningful role that art therapy plays in healing patients. “In a challenging time when control might seem elusive, art therapy provides patients with a choice — a chance to say no to something

when they might not have that option elsewhere, like declining medical procedures, hospital admission, or even taking medication,” explained Cantrell. Along her journey, Cantrell credits her mentors with sharing their perspectives and experiences, enabling her to become an even more passionate advocate for her patients. Rewarding moments for Cantrell stem from observing patients empower themselves through their choices, navigating their experiences, and reclaiming control, confided Cantrell. “Whether it’s a two-year-old patient establishing a routine through art to prepare for a tough experience or an adolescent patient constructing an art museum with each wall representing phases of her treatment and her fears around it, the impact of art therapy is evident,” shared Cantrell. Over time, that child patient became an adolescent seeking a new adventure to express her creativity and resolve. So, Cantrell and the patient created dragon puppets, each with powerful deformities: unique characters with superpowers beyond casual observation. “The time spent on art means more to patients than most would ever guess, serving as a coping mechanism in an otherwise intimidating hospital environment,” explained Cantrell, painting a picture for those seeking to understand a child’s perspective. Cantrell’s role in creating a welcoming space and providing an outlet through art therapy eases the fear commonly associated with entering a hospital, and it’s a deeply gratifying

and rewarding part of her position at Walter Reed. “The countless experiences and connections I have been privileged to have with patients and their families are invaluable,” said Cantrell, emotionally connecting to the transformation her patients undergo, profoundly affecting her life. Maintaining physical and emotional resilience Cantrell said she’s cultivated a strong support network personally and professionally, a de facto health care team helping her maintain a work-life balance that keeps her physically, mentally, and emotionally strong. “I have amazing colleagues who provide a true sense of camaraderie, and I participate in regular supervision to navigate the emotional complexities inherent in this line of work,” shared Cantrell. “Establishing healthy boundaries is key; allowing for a disconnection from work helps me to ground myself and balance my life.” Cantrell takes ownership of her emotional health by connecting with her therapist and intentionally pursuing joyful habits: taking nature walks or doing yoga. Spreading joy by expanding the reach of art therapy Cantrell’s Christmas wish was to expand art therapy activities to all pediatric clinics at Walter Reed, creating an amazing pathway for more military families and their children to benefit from the therapeutic rewards of art therapy while cultivating community here at Walter Reed and beyond.

The GREATest BRITAIN road trip, Part 1: Bruges, Dover, Stonehenge

Story and photos by Leonie Milde contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com

whole months, each destination can be explored separately in a week or less.)

In the Summer of 2018, I felt I had seen and written enough (for now) about Germany and the United States and decided it was time for something new. So I packed up a little Mini Countryman and embarked on what I would call the GREATest BRITAIN road trip. A terrible pun for a life-changing experience. Over the course of 3 months and almost 11,000 kilometres, I ate way more beans on toast than any nutritionist would advise you to, climbed way less mountains than I had anticipated, understood way less than someone fluent in English would expect from an English-speaking nation and fell umbrella over rain boots in love with the people, the culture and, most importantly, the landscape of this magnificent island(s).

PART 1: Bruges, Dover, Stonehenge. Thanks to my love, Ryanair, I have been to the UK about 30 times in the last four years with no intention of stopping anytime soon. There’s just something about the charming stone cottages, dreamy meadows, blissful flock of sheep and that accent that excite me every time I come back.I didn’t realize the UK had such a bad reputation until I began telling people about my plans and faced responses such as ‘but it’s cold and grey’, ‘but what is there to see’, ‘all they eat is Fish and Chips’ and ‘why England?’. Oddly enough, these comments did the opposite of discouraging me and I was even more determined to prove people wrong. And oh my did I prove them wrong. People were also shocked when I told them I would be driving up there in my own car, which had me worrying whether I was making a mistake, too, but it turned out to be quite reassuring to at least be sitting on the familiar side of the car even if it meant inventing some new gymnastics tricks to get into parking garages, not even attempting going through drive throughs and having to be extra careful

But isn’t the UK just loud pubs, rain, and vinegary food? Nope! In 7 parts, I will recap my adventure and introduce you to destinations that might not have been on your radar yet but absolutely should be. (The following travel tips do not require dropping everything for 3

when it came to changing lanes on the highway. Sorry, motorway. Driving on the left turned out to be doable as well given that the streets are designed to accommodate left-handed traffic only and chances are there will be other cars leading the way. The ferry port in Calais is merely 5.5 hours from the KMC and Wiesbaden and 7 hours from Stuttgart. Bruges My first stop was Bruges, Belgium. I like chocolate, beer and pretty houses so this was a perfect first stop. Bonus: it’s only an hour from the ferry terminal in Calais and almost no detour at all so it was ideal for a scenic layover and made sure I wasn’t already tired getting on the ferry since I was plenty nervous about driving on the other side of the road. Bruges is well known for its beautiful architecture, beer and overall romantic and calm atmosphere. It had been on my bucket list for years and I’m happy to say that it did not disappoint. I walked along the canals, went into one Chocolaterie after the other and admired the colorful architecture while stuffing my face with fries, frites, and waffles, gauffres. It also happened to be the day of the world cup finale, which meant the streets were quite empty as everyone was packed into sports bars

and cafés to watch the game. The cobble stoned alleys and smooth water along with the sound of horseshoes and carriages made me forget all about the anxieties of the months of preparation and sent me on that ferry perfectly calm and at peace with the knowledge that it would be a while until I got back to my old, familiar routine back home. Getting there: Bruges is a circa 4-hour drive from Wiesbaden and the KMC and 5.5 hours from Stuttgart. Dover Seeing Dover is pretty much inevitable as the majestical cliffs greet every visitor arriving via ferry and it is simply impossible to resists seeing them up close. There is a parking lot next to the visitor center, which is an excellent place to eat and perhaps grab your first souvenir. The walk along the cliffs appears to be endless and since I’ve never followed it all the way, I can’t say for a fact that it isn’t. About an hour in, you will get to the famous lighthouse, which is open for visitors, but even if you only have half an hour to spare, it’s worth going up there and looking out over the ocean. Legend has it that on a clear day, you can look all the way to France but it is England after all, so maybe don’t hold your breath for that one. Either way,

the view is magnificent and I can’t think of a more stunning natural wonder to be welcomed by. Dover Castle Dover Castle was the first of many, many castles I would visit on the trip and set the bar pretty high for those to follow. It is incredibly well-kept and an absolute attraction for visitors of all ages. The inner tower, a medieval palace, consists of furnished rooms, real fires and costumized guards to tell you more about the history and life on the estate. The outer wall, which became an official military headquarter in WWII, offers fantastic views over the ocean, the city and fields as well as a gripping history. You will also find the oldest surviving lighthouse of the country, one of the oldest in the world, and many medieval tunnels on the site. There is also a multi-media exhibition, an underground military hospital and much more so one can easily spend half a day or more exploring the whole site. Opening hours: Before April 1, the castle is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, after that it is open every day. Admission costs: £20 per adult unless you look like a 15-year-old, which I do, apparently, in which case it’s only £12.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge Being in my 6th semester of studying English literature and history, I couldn’t be so close to Stonehenge and not take the detour. By this time, I was joined by a friend and we excitedly parked at the visitor center only to find out that admission costs €20, which we decided we were not willing to pay for a bunch of stones. Luckily, we found out that the walk to the stones (about 20

minutes over green fields with baby cows, so no complaining on our side) is free and while one does not get to be up close as there is a separate fence for those without a ticket, we did get a pretty good view. Years ago, visitors were allowed to touch and even climb the stones but those times are long gone and the preservation of the site is a priority. There are also sample houses at the visitor center where you can see how the people that threw

Rozenhoedkaai in Bruges, Photo by ecstk22/Shutterstock.com

these infamous parties around the stones lived. To this day, every year on March 31, hundreds of people gather in the very spot where they once feasted and dance all night long. The Site Early signs of activities in the area are estimated at more than 5000 years ago. The stones, that travelled 240km to Wiltshire from South Wales for no known reason, are believed to have been set

up in the late Neolithic period about 2500BC; in the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby. It consists of more than 700 known archaeological features including over over 180 scheduled monuments – henges, timber structures, enclosures and many burial mounds. There are countless legends surrounding the site as no one knows for certain why, or even exactly how, the stones were set up. One of the more amusing myths is that the rocks were once giants dancing in a circle who suddenly turned into stones, hence the circular formation. Archaeologists found animal skeletons in such large amounts that they are certain the site was accompanied by large feasts. So even if you’re not into history per se, the myths that this site provoked are worth the visit! Even nowadays, each year for the summer solstice, thousands of visitors gather around the stones to watch the sun set right between

two stones as their ancestors are believed to have done thousands of years ago. For more fun facts, visit https:// www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/ inspire-me/blog/blog-posts/30things-you-might-not-knowabout-stonehenge/

If you want to see the exhibition and learn more about the history of the site, which is ultimately a big mystery, though quite fascinating, you either need to get a ticket after all or pick up a book in the gift shop. Getting There: if you’re not driving, the closest airport is Bristol. There are Ryanair flights from Cologne from €10 each way. If you are driving, it’s just under 3 hours from Dover and takes you through the “Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, so it’s quite a nice trip! Look out for part 2 in next week’s edition.

Both regions are celebrating “200 years of German immigration to Brazil,” particularly from the Palatinate and Hunsrück to southern Brazil. The kickoff event is a “genuine” Brazilian carnival featuring Brazilian samba dancers, capoeira performers, musicians, and singer Vando Oliveira from Rio de Janeiro. Christoph Dammann, head of the Department of Culture and the event’s initiator, explains, “There will also be a Palatine carnival component. The distinguished comedian Wolfgang Marschall from the Untiere will deliver a ‘Büttenrede’ (carnival speech) addressing the highly relevant topics of immigration and the encounter of different cultures.” A costume contest is also planned, and the Fruchthalle’s catering will offer drinks and snacks. Firefighters assigned to the 39th Civil Engineer Squadron conduct a simulated unconscious pilot rescue operation during a crash, damaged, or disabled aircraft recovery exercise at Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye, Jan. 8.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Renan Arredondo 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs The 39th Maintenance Squadron facilitated the first crash, damaged, or disabled aircraft recovery training exercise with a Turkish air force F-16 Fighting Falcon at Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye, Jan. 8. The objective of the CDDAR exercise was to test participants’ response to a simulated in-flight emergency which required emergency power unit activation, an incapacitated pilot, and aircraft lift. “The focus for us was to practice our job in a more realistic situation and improve our working relationships with our partners to see how we are able to help each other,”

said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Tyler Kurtz, 39th MXS CDDAR team chief. “We are a team here. This hasn’t happened in quite some time where we’ve done an exercise together. So, we conducted a smaller exercise to serve as a precursor for the future.” Turkish air force members assigned to the 10th Tanker Base Command, Airmen assigned to the 39th MXS, firefighters and explosive ordnance disposal Airmen from the 39th Civil Engineer Squadron, and emergency medical services personnel from the 39th Medical Group worked together to respond to the simulated aircraft crash site. Once first responders inspected the scene and determined it was safe, medical personnel assessed the condition of the Turkish pilot

and safely transferred him to an ambulance. The CDDAR team then simulated the use of lift bags to prop the aircraft off the ground, to inspect the aircraft’s undercarriage. “Not only was this the first ever combined exercise with the 39 ABW and a Turkish F-16 Fighting Falcon, this was also the first time in more than two years that 39th Air Base Wing personnel have conducted a CDDAR training exercise with Turkish air force partners,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Brandi-Ann Hamada, 39th MXS commander. U.S. Air Force personnel assigned to Incirlik AB routinely work alongside NATO allies for a variety of training scenarios and exercises.

Americans help during 1980 Earthquake in Terceira Island, Azores by Cristina Oliveira 65th Air Base Group Public Affairs On the afternoon of January 1, 1980, the islands of Terceira, Sao Jorge, and Graciosa in the Azores archipelago were rocked by an earthquake measuring about 7.0 on the Richter scale. Eleven seconds of violent tremors were enough to bring down most older buildings, some built in the 17th century, including historic monuments such as palaces, churches, and monasteries. At the time, most Azorean homes were made of stacked stones cut or collected from the earth with only mortar to hold them in place. Although the walls, when covered in plaster, could withstand the strong winds and storms common in the archipelago, they could not overcome the shaking from the quake. Damage on Terceira was particularly heavy. The tumult injured hundreds physically and many more emotionally. Across the island, the Municipality of Angra do Heroismo lost 3,957 homes, while the Municipally of Praia da Vitoria lost another 765 homes. In one particular village, Doze Ribeiras, in a matter of moments 334 homes were destroyed. These numbers represented 99 percent of the village. Across the island, 18,741 people found themselves homeless and without any prospect for the future. Among these numbers were six American families living offbase, who lost their homes too. Lajes Field Air Base, at this

time home of the 1605th Air Base Wing, survived almost physically untouched and fully operational. Due to their fortunate lack of damage, Americans immediately looked to assist their local companions. The first volunteer efforts consisted of providing medical support, such as blood, medicine and

electrical power for the Angra do Heroismo Hospital, which served as the main reception area for injured people. Three American medical teams also quickly went into action across the devastated island, providing medical care and comfort to those in need. Later, teams of the U.S Air Force, Army, Navy, civilians, and dependent

personnel were organized and dispatched into the communities to clear roads, dig through rubble and help families move their belongings to protected shelters. Heavy equipment such as frontend loaders and bulldozers were also granted to the region to supplement the Portuguese machines and to facilitate the emergency operation. Tents, mattresses, and other essential supplies began to flow out of the Base as people began to seek for shelter and food. The Air Base sheltered 643 Portuguese displaced by the disaster and the people of Lajes Field assisted in constructing temporary shelters for another 1,500 people. Two days after the quake, two American C-141 airplanes landed at the island carrying 700 tents, nearly a thousand blankets, food, and medicine. In total, the United States government supplied hundreds of tents, 1,480 mattresses and over 3,000 blankets at a cost of $325,000 dollars, more than one million dollars today. The response of the individual Americans living at Lajes also had a huge impact. Personal donations accounted for 188 bags of clothing, 96 cases of food, 15 cases of shoes and over $10,500 or $38,000 today. Wives, off-duty military, and high school students also volun-

teered themselves and their time to prepare and serve meals at the dining hall and by the third day after the quake the Base dining facility was serving around 1,800 meals a day to Portuguese civilians. Besides the physical destruction that the earthquake left behind, electric power, telephone communications and water supplies were disrupted for up to three days. To fill the gap, the Base functioned as a communication center and the 1605th Air Base Wing Crisis Action Team became the focus for disaster relief operations by all U.S. Forces and a coordination point with Portuguese military and civil authorities, a crucial element of help in managing the tragedy. Adversity can establish everlasting bonds between people and cooperating during a tragic accident like the 1980 New Year’s Day Earthquake on Terceira Island served to strength ties between Americans and Portuguese. Although the connection started much earlier than the first days of 1980, through this tragedy we saw the two nations’ fraternity come into focus. Forty-two years from that fateful day to the present and the relationship of partnership and friendship that was built between the two countries remains strong and solid.

HVAC: Bringing the Heat

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Gage Rogman, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Heat Shop technician, waits to see if heating equipment is functioning properly at Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 15, 2023. Members of the 786th CES Heat Shop are always on call in case heating equipment fails and they are called on to ensure Airmen and families on Ramstein AB have safe living and working conditions.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs During this time of year, Airmen and their families stationed at Ramstein Air Base are no strangers to the cold. It may be a little known fact that only 16 people are responsible for ensuring heat is distributed to thousands of pieces of equipment for the base populous. The team who handles the heat is the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Heat Shop. The 86th CE Heat Shop is responsible for all heating equipment on Ramstein AB and ensuring the mission doesn’t stop from many of the organizations essential for the base to function. “We are responsible for 3,000 pieces of equipment valued at $145,000,000 across the base,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Christopher Pakusch, 786th CES Heat Shop flight chief. “We have to ensure the base has enough heat to function. It is a need for not just comfortable living, but sometimes survival.” The 786th CES Heat Shop provides warmth across Ramstein AB and its many organizations. Some need it more than others as their mission is critical and relies heavily on consistent regulated temperatures for their equipment to function. “Our communication and intelligence organizations have a lot of technology that needs to be a specific temperature to function correctly.” Pakusch said. “If their equipment was to shut down, the mission on base would be severely impacted.” In addition to protecting mis-

sion critical equipment, the 786th CES Heat Shop also supports the base populace. Pakusch said that places such as the Child Development Centers are critical to mission success. If the heat turns off at the CDCs then their parents and guardians have to pick their children, which could degrade mission effectiveness due to pulling members away from their assigned units. While supporting wing readiness, the 786th CES Heat Shop also provides the opportunity to gain experience and education for jobs in the private sector. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning is a job that is always in high demand in the civilian sector. “This job translates very well on the outside,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Alexander Nutt, 786th CES HVAC technician. “I am always learning something and there is always something new to do. The military is not forever so it is good to know I have experience in this so I can have a job when I get out.” Many people love their jobs. Airmen are no different. From locations and work some Airmen find enjoyment in what they do. “I love this job because of the work and team cohesion,” Pakusch said. “We are a close-knit group and they are true professionals. These men and women are good at what they do and I am proud to serve with them every day.” The 786th CES is the one-stop-shop for all Ramstein AB’s HVAC needs. If you need assistance, call the 786th CES customer service line at DSN: 489-6623 or commercial +496315366623.

The 786th CES Heat Shop is attached to the 786th CES HVAC shop, but instead of working on air conditioning, they only work with heating equipment.

Gage and his teammates must ensure Ramstein AB has heat to provide a safe environment for Airmen and families and ensure mission success. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Alexander Nutt, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Heat Shop technician, replaces a pump on a water heater at Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 9. Nutt and the rest of his 15 team members are responsible for maintaining 3,000 pieces of heating equipment on Ramstein valued at 145,000,000 which helps members on base perform their missions no matter the temperature.

1. Shop at German food stores. Perhaps try to shop for your groceries there for a full month. Strive to always try a new item not found in American food stores. 2. Find and take a cheap flight somewhere. Find a free long weekend and book a destination that has the best price. You will discover and explore a new place that you normally would have not chosen. Low-cost carriers generally have good options. 3. Gather your flip-flops and take a beach holiday in the new year. Beaches in Europe can be a different experience than the ones we are used to in the States. Catch some rays in mainland Spain or Italy or even discover the beauty of German beaches! 4. Feel the speed of an ICE train. Travel to a new city on a fast German ICE (Intercity Express) train while sitting back and relaxing. Have a croissant and sip some wine. Look for low-price tickets, especially when travelling within Germany. 5. Plan an epic road trip. Pack the car with drinks, food and plan your gas stops with the Esso Fuel finder. Travel on famous routes such as the German Romantic Road or do it the old fashion way: just grab a map and go! 6. Explore your own town. Small villages have amazing charm and history

just waiting to be discovered. See where the locals go, perhaps a park or lake. Join them in local pubs or family-owned restaurants. Like they say, strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet! 7. Learn new German words. Learn more than the basic vocabulary or phrases like “Wo ist der Bahnhof?” (Where is the train station?) You can

also learn words that will help you be more a part of the conversation. Here are some ideas: Exactly – Genau Maybe – Vielleicht Nice – Schön All right – Alles klar Great! – Toll!

Fine – Prima Fantastic – Fantastisch Likewise – Gleichfalls Doesn’t matter – Macht Nichts No difference – Ganz Egal All is well – Alles Gut Fabulous – Fabelhaft Happy New Year!
