Ramstein out-processing gets overhaul Commentary

by Col. Mike Monson 86th Mission Support Group commander “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave,” so the classic tune by the Eagles goes. For those Ramstein patrons who are in the middle of out-processing in preparation for an upcoming permanent change of station, you may be able to relate to those lyrics. Fortunately, help is on the way. An important aspect of the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission is to operate the Air Force’s premier installation to enable and assure strategic capabilities. One way we do that is by taking care of the 54,000 Americans who call the KMC home while providing an exceptional quality of life. Another way we do that is by ensuring our mission support processes (housing, finance, personnel) are as efficient as possible to minimize Airmen’s time away from work. Anyone who PCSd to Ramstein more than two years ago knows first-hand that it was a cumbersome, confusing process to in-process the myriad of base agencies. For many, in-processing took more than four weeks of appoint-

With Syria entering its 22nd month of civil war, the U.S. began deploying Patriot missiles into Turkey in an effort to help defend the NATO ally from potential threats of the Syrian conflict. In a recent statement from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Panetta affirmed U.S. commitment to Turkey. “We’ve made very clear … we’re going to protect countries in this region,” Panetta said last month. “We have to act … to make sure that we defend ourselves and make sure that Turkey can defend itself.” The deployment of U.S. forces was approved after coordination between the Department of Defense and NATO. “Supporting missions like this is something I’ve been doing my

The process that once took four weeks now takes only three days. That was a huge win for world-class customer service. Now, as we head into 2013, the 86th AW has once again put “eliminating non-value added activities in our major processes” as one of its top priorities. The ﬁrst of seven major processes that we will overhaul is Ramstein outprocessing. As the team champion for this AFSO21 event, you have my pledge that we will not simply make our internal processes more efﬁcient by outsourcing our work to you, our customer. We’ve all seen that before as organizations try to do more with less in an era of competing and/or declining resources, but it does not save the customer time, nor does it help enable and assure strategic capabilities. Our goal is to complete this AFSO21 event in time to affect the bulk of the 2013 summer PCS

21st TSC wins DA LSS awards by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr. 21st TSC Public Affairs The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Lean Six Sigma program again received Department of the Army accolades for saving the Army and the American tax payers millions of dollars and discovering methods of conducting operations more efficiently. For the third straight year, the 21st TSC won the Army’s Lean Six Sigma Excellence Awards Program Organizational Deployment Award for the 2012 fiscal year. Also receiving the Army-level LSS Project Team Award is the command’s 266th Financial Management Support Center for improving the implementation and control of foreign language proficiency bonus pay, saving the Army more than $5 million. The LSS program is a flexible cost and waste elimination method used successfully in both private and public organizations to increase efficiency and enhance effectiveness within an organization. According to the nomination narrative for the Organizational Deployment Award, the 21st TSC won for completing 28 LSS projects that are expected to produce $16 million in validated financial benefits to the organization as well as multiple operational efficiency improvements. “This award recognizes the command’s dedication to continued self-improvement, first-class support, and our commitment to using our nation’s resources in the most efficient manner possible,” said Col. Michael Snyder, the 21st TSC’s deputy commanding officer. “It’s definitely very prestigious; it’s prestigious for our command to have won an award that recognizes our organization,” said Ron Stanley, 21st TSC operations research analyst. “It recognizes the command group on down across the whole command and (shows) the depth and breadth of the program.” Maj. Christopher Bachmann, the 21st TSC chief of the Operations Research System Analysis section, said it was a team effort from all of the brigades and all of the people involved in the program. “It affirms to the people outside of the command that we do a lot of things right,” he said. “We’re also looking to improve the organization and improve the Army, and this award is proof that we’re doing that.” See AWARD, Page 9

firefighter from the 886th Civil Engineer Squadron was awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal Dec. 18 at Fire Station One on Ramstein. Staff Sgt. Robert Perricone was presented the medal by his squadron commander in front of his unit. “Throughout the last two years, Staff Sergeant Perricone performed outstanding volunteer service of a sustained, direct and consequential nature to the United States and German community, which, in turn, served to enhance the overall American way of life,” wrote Lt. Col. Robert Grover, 886th CES commander, in his recommendation for Perricone to receive the award. The Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal is unique because it recognizes exceptional community support over a sustained period of time. In 24 months, the

Mount Prospect, Ill., native volunteered 268 hours with various organizations, aiding a countless amount of service members and the local German community. “My favorite thing about volunteering is just getting to help someone out,” Perricone said. Perricone can be attributed to supporting families staying in the Fisher House, driving Airmen home safely with Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving, coordinating events for the Wounded Warrior Program, fundraising at the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club Welfare Bazaar and Freedom Fests, helping construct Haunted Tent City, walking 11 miles in firefighter gear in the 24-hour Viking Challenge, and bagging groceries for Operation Warmheart. With all his contributions, Perricone not only made an impact on the community he served, but also in the community he serves with. “(Perricone) has inspired many of the Airmen around him to participate and give

back to the community. He teaches them the value of volunteering for what you believe in and being passionate about its cause,” said Master Sgt. Jason Higgins, 886th CES superintendent and Perricone’s supervisor. “He doesn’t just volunteer, he leads his people, instilling the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie. He makes those that supervise him step it up by constantly being challenged to rise above his consistently high level of performance.”

Soldiers rescue family after accident by Ignacio “Iggy” Rubalcava U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder Public Affairs An early morning drive to Baumholder recently quickly turned into a nightmare for Heather Majorwitz and her two children, Kaitie and Bret. They were on their way to school when the car hit a patch of ice and started to skid across the road toward an oncoming bus. Majorwitz swerved to avoid the bus and slid off the road, rolling the car. “One minute we were on the road and the next we were hanging from our seatbelts,” she said. The car’s wheels were still turning when four Soldiers from the 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion came upon the scene. Without hesitation and not knowing who was in the car, CW2 Vladimir Sequera and three other Soldiers stopped their Humvee and dashed out to help. The children were already making their way out of the shattered back window when the Soldiers approached the vehicle. Sequera and the other Soldiers, Sgt. 1st Class Winston Smith, Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Lehman and Sgt. Cheryl Henneberry quickly brought the children to safety and wrapped them with their jackets so they could stay warm. By then, Majorwitz was making her way out of the car, so Sequera and the other Soldiers turned their attention to helping her. “When we saw the vehicle, we immediately pulled our vehicle to the side. We all had the same thought: There’s somebody in the vehicle,” Sequera said. “We didn’t know if they were American or German. that would go above and beyond and help us,” she said. “You guys are my heroes.” Sequera said he was glad they were there to help her. “I don’t think it’s a hero thing,” he said. “I think it’s a human behavior that we help each other out. It’s part of what we do in the military.” Madeleine Dwoiakowski, public affairs officer for U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder, drives the same route on her way to work. When she approached the site, she saw numerous first responders already assisting.

“I saw Soldiers and hoped that none of our guys were injured, not knowing that the Soldiers were actually assisting on the scene,” she said. “I then saw the car and it looked like it had gone through a press. They were extremely fortunate to walk away from there with no injuries, and they were also equally fortunate that the Soldiers were there almost immediately to help.” For Majorwitz, it was the scariest moment she’s experienced as a mother, she said. “I wasn’t sure if the children were OK. Everybody said they were OK, but even at the hospital I wasn’t sure,” Majorwitz said. “My little boy gets anxious about things and I was worried that he’d have this anxiety and wouldn’t want to ride in a car again.” Majorwitz said they had a flat tire once before and for the next year her son checked the tires before getting in the car. “But he was fine. He was a trooper,” Majorwitz said. Turning to Sequera, Majorwitz added, “I think he was fine because you guys were there immediately. There wasn’t that second to even worry about it because we were taken care of right away.” Later that day, Majorwitz, who is the librarian at Smith Elementary School, called her 15-year-old daughter in the states. “This is why I do what I do to serve these guys, because they’re there and they step in no matter what,” she told her daughter. “It’s automatic because that’s who they are. This makes me even more proud to be able to teach the kids of our Soldiers, because I know that they’re out there taking care of everybody else.” Fighting back tears, Majorwitz turned to the Soldiers who rescued her and her children and said, “I think that’s why you all are in the Army and you’re Soldiers. We could have died but we didn’t. We were very fortunate all around so I just want to thank you.” Majorwitz then embraced Sequera and repeated her appreciation for their help. “You guys are my heroes.”

AF Deployment Transition Center hits 5,000 milestone by Senior Airman Aaron-Forrest Wainwright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Deployment Transition Center on Ramstein first opened its doors July 10, 2010, and as of Jan. 4, more than 5,000 service members have processed through the center. The center was developed to help those transitioning from dangerous operations in the theater back to day-to-day life. In order to do this, the DTC staff provides a four-day pro-

gram in a stress-free environment for service members returning from deployment. The theory was to allow the members to relax and decompress before returning to their normal lives. The programs offered at the DTC were designed to ease integration before the service members return to work or family. The atmosphere is warm and inviting; rooms have a kitchen and living room with couches, a television and game systems, which bring a piece of home and give returning service members a chance to relax.

“It’s to give you a sense that you’re going home; you’re in a good place; you’re in a good environment. You can relax and ... prepare for what you’re going back to,” said Lt. Col. Robert Rossi, DTC commander. Rossi said they have seen large and small groups, including Navy and USMC personnel in addition to Airmen, transition through the center in the past two years but no matter the size of the group the staff does their best to help the service members ease out of the war mindset. He said having 5,000 peo-

ple process through is a significant milestone, but without the hard work of the DTC staff they would have never been able to accomplish their mission. “All the work (the DTC staff) has done has been positive, and because of that we remain an enduring capability and it continues to be a part of what we do as a service to take care of our people,” Rossi said. The curriculum at the DTC begins with the DTC staff helping service members process into the DTC by greeting them upon arrival at

Ramstein, handling baggage, storing weapons in the armory and obtaining lodging for each person during their stay. On the second day, the Airmen participate in small group discussions with career experts to help communicate their experiences while deployed. “It was a good experience to have,” said Master Sgt. Jason Barton, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron vehicle operator. “Even now, when I sit through the combat portion, I can recognize things that I’ve done in the past, and now I try to be more aware of this behavior.”

21st Theater Sustainment Command initiative has resulted in a one-of-akind Soldier clothing sales facility that caters specifically to wounded Soldiers, enhancing their ability to obtain new and replacement uniform items in an easily accessible and discreet environment. The Wounded Heroes Service Center, located next to the Army and Air Force Exchange Service’s Military Clothing Store on Kleber Kaserne, is expected to streamline the process of Soldiers receiving replacement uniform items after being medically evacuated from a combat zone. The project was funded and constructed by U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern. Wheelchair-access ramps and an improved fire prevention system were the bulk of infrastructure and upgrades. AAFES funded additional improvements that included new shelving. Although the WHSC is currently in operation and serving wounded Soldiers, the store is scheduled to hold its official grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday. “This is the first store that is just for the wounded heroes,” said Deniz Barcala, the Kleber Military Clothing Store manager. “We didn’t used to have a wheelchair entrance or a dressing room that would fit wheelchairs. “Now, we have a (wheelchair-user) entrance, (wheelchair-user) bathroom, and (wheelchair-user) dressing room,” Barcala added. “Everything in the store is designed for our wounded heroes.” Sgt. Brett Boman, a medically evacuated wounded Soldier from the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Schweinfurt, Germany, said the WHSC is a lot quicker and easier and less stressful for Soldiers. “It helps out a lot having a process that is so easy,” he said. “It’s user friendly, which is good for the Soldiers.” “The opening of this facility is another example

of the Army’s continued investment in the care of our wounded servicemen and women,” said Maj. Gen. Aundre F. Piggee, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. It was Piggee’s backing that paved the way for the 720-square-foot facility that carries an assortment of uniforms, gloves, hats, boots and duffel bags. In addition to having automatic doors and being wheelchair-user friendly, the facility is also tucked away on the backside of the normal military clothing store to provide a bit of privacy for wounded heroes. Prior to the opening of the WHSC, Soldiers who were evacuated from a combat zone to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center were required to be transported by bus to Kleber where they would wait in the back of the store for their items. “We used to have to help them walk through the

warehouse, and it was very hard to get through the warehouse,” Barcala said. “They needed a shopping cart, because they were getting at least 30 items and it wasn’t healthy for them to go through the warehouse like that. “About a year ago, Army and Exchange leadership decided we could serve these heroes better,” Barcala continued. Wounded Soldiers receiving replacement uniform items now have access to much better service.” “Out of 3,100 operations worldwide, the Exchange has nothing else like what was built at Kleber Kaserne,” said Col. Fredrick Hannah, AAFES’ European commander. “Beyond having a facility that is easier to navigate, we also have associates who shop with the service member, put items in their cart and even pack their merchandise up for the bus ride back.”

Gary Bautell You may not know him, but you’ve probably heard him by George A. Smith AFN Europe Some parts of a tour of duty in Germany haven’t changed for the last 50 years: cars blaze down the autobahn, people swig mugs of beer and Gary Bautell broadcasts on AFN. If you, your parents or even your grandparents were assigned to Germany over the past four decades, chances are you’d recognize his voice. Bautell says he often meets people who feel like they know him. It is a lopsided relationship. While many may “know” the mustachioed man with the salt-and-pepper hair, he doesn’t know them. An example, said the veteran newsman, was when he ﬁnished introducing then U.S. Army Europe Commander Gen. Carter Ham at a wounded warrior event. “Up until then I had never met him,” Bautell said, “but when he took

the podium, he called me the voice of the U.S. military in Europe.” The general later told the awkwardly ﬂattered Bautell that his voice had been a part of three different tours in Europe. At times, Germans act a bit wacky around Bautell, too. During a tour of the AFN Europe Headquarters in Mannheim, one man strolled by Bautell’s ofﬁce, saw his name, and excitedly called his dad on his cell phone, blurting out, “Guess whom I’m standing next to? Gary Bautell!” He then put his father on the phone with Bautell. Bautell may skirt celebrity status these days, but in his early years with AFN, announcers like him were considered out-right stars. Bautell joined AFN in November 1962. He heard AFN radio when he was stationed in Germany as an engineer, and re-enlisted to join the military network after showing his

recruiter he had commercial DJ experience at an AM/FM radio station in Houghton Lake, Mich. He also worked at his campus radio station at Michigan State University. Bautell’s ﬁrst day on the job at the network headquarters at the Frankfurt Hoechst Castle was spent taking a battery of tests, including a voice audition and exams on foreign affairs and classical music. He passed them all and was on his way to a long career in military broadcasting. In the ’60s and into the ’70s, AFN radio was more than a choice on the dial, it was the most different, most rebellious place on the dial. “You’d hear AFN in taxis, in restaurants and cars all over Germany,” Bautell said. “We had thousands of American listeners, but millions of Germans.” The difference back then, Bautell said, was that German radio was “state-run, boring stuff.” It was mostly German-language folk type music. “AFN changed German pop culture by introducing them to rock, country and jazz,” he said. This was before the Internet, iPods and satellite radio. You only got music from the radio stations on your dial. Other than the music, there was another draw for young Germans: Many were eager to learn English. AFN was designed to reach the American military audience and no one expected so many Germans to tune in.

But they did. They enjoyed AFN’s contemporary music so much that it contributed to the German government privatizing radio in the late ’80s and led to many of the German radio stations you now hear playing English language hits. Bautell went on to host three different DJ programs: “The Dufﬂebag Show,” two rock songs an hour mixed in with “milder” music by singers such as Ella Fitzgerald; “Music in the Air,” back-to-back instrumental songs; and “Midnight in Europe,” a mix of poetry and jazz. Bautell would turn on his microphone and deliver laid back lines like, “Cool breezes, blowing leaves and smooth jazz, you’ve got it all right here with Mr. Midnight.” Yes, that was his air name, as well as the name of the other two DJs who hosted the same show over the years. Bautell made the transition from DJ to newscaster, but if you listened to him in the ’60s you wouldn’t have recognized his voice. He rewound an old, brittle tape for me, using a pencil to help the struggling reel-to-reel machine play back its contents. The voice I heard from the built-in speaker sounded a lot more like legendary CBS TV anchorman Walter Cronkite than him. Bautell laughed, and agreed. “Cronkite was one of my idols. When asked about the award for the 266th FMSC, Stanley said, “This is the second year in a row that 266th FMSC has had a project recognized by the Department of the Army. (It) reflects the organization’s commitment to Lean Six Sigma.” Bachmann added there are hundreds of LSS projects initiated in the Army every year. Of those, only two are given projectlevel awards by the Army and the 266th FMSC has won one of those awards. “All my team members are excited to be a part of this project, not only because it saved millions of taxpayers’ dollars, but also that it made history by changing the way the FLPB process is operating,” said project lead Vladimir Koltsov. “We also achieved a better Soldiers’ satisfaction with the process,” added Koltsov, who is also the 266th FMSC chief of military pay review, debt management and special actions section. “Now, the recipients of FLPB have trust in finance personnel to get it right the first time.” Lean Six Sigma projects carried out within an organization follow a defined sequence of steps and have quantified financial targets, such as cost reduction and/or profit increase. “It’s important now, because if you look at the dwindling defense budget, it has gotten smaller,” Bachmann said. “And this is all about finding efficiencies in your organization, whether it’s simply an operational efficiency and we’re doing something faster and better, or trying to find those financial benefits, especially now that we’re trying to save money.” Though saving money is an important aspect of the LSS program, it’s also about improving efficiency through operational means. “That’s a large part of why you do (LSS) in an organization like the 21st TSC. It’s not just about dollars,” Stanley said. “Here in an operationally focused command, we find that a lot of our projects are really more about operational benefits and efficiencies that are achieved.” LSS also creates opportunities to make any organization better and more viable in the future, Snyder added. “Project outcomes usually result in shorter process times, fewer man hours and tangible cost savings,” he said. “Because it is a holistic process, it also cuts across several command functions creating enhanced interaction, teamwork and collective solutions with broad buy-in.” Since it began implementing the LSS program in 2006, the 21st TSC has trained a total of 138 green belts and 19 black belts. Green belts are individuals who apply LSS to their daily work environments by driving improvements within their facility, department or natural work group, and black belts are process improvement leaders who work on large-scale and often cross-organizational process improvements.

The journey begins

Born in July 13, 1916, in Bad Kreuznach, Forell joined the German Army during the 1930s. He lived on Heidelberg’s Haupstrasse, now the city’s pedestrian shopping zone. When World War II started, Forell and his two brothers were sent to fight on the Eastern Front, Guran said. Wounded there, Forell returned to Germany to convalesce with his wife, Anneliese, and his young son, Claude, Guran’s father. Photos from that time show Claude with his father, in dress uniform, in Heidelberg. After recovering, Forell was sent to Sicily. U.S. forces landed at Gela, along Sicily’s southern coast, on July 10, 1943. Forell was killed July 12, the day before his 27th birthday. After the war, Forell’s widow and son emigrated to America. She remarried and her new husband adopted Guran’s father. “It’s always been a mystery who my grandfather was,” Guran said. “It has always been a bit of a touchy subject based on the fact that my dad wanted us to be American and never taught us the (German) language.” Serving in uniform was a theme that resonated within Guran’s family. His father served in the U.S. Air Force. In the 1970s, during a tour in Germany, Claude rediscovered his German roots, Guran said. Unfortunately, at that time, he couldn’t find more information about his father.

renewed the search. Armed with historical documents that Guran’s family kept, they found some clues. Still, they couldn’t pinpoint Forell’s grave. “I just couldn’t believe, in this day and age, there wasn’t a way we couldn’t find if he was actually buried somewhere,” Michelle Guran said. During one late-night research session, where Michelle Guran used computer translating services and the German War Graves Commission’s site, she found what they had been searching for. Guran’s grandfather’s gravesite was at Motta Sant’Anastasia, on the island of Sicily. “When I finally found it, I started crying,” Michelle Guran said. “We have been looking for so long.” She called her husband, who was training elsewhere in Germany, with the news. Thrilled, Guran began planning to visit the cemetery, which he expected to be in disrepair. “It’s probably dilapidated and grown over,” Guran thought. “The tomb markers (are) probably knocked over, if there are any still there.”

A Soldier finds closure

When the Gurans arrived at the cemetery, just eight kilometers

from Catania, they were amazed at how well-preserved the cemetery was. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V., a private organization that is responsible for the maintenance and care of German graves worldwide, maintains the cemetery in Sicily, the final resting place of 4,552 German troops. Guran paid his respects and put closure to his search. “It was very moving,” Guran said. “Truth is, if he hadn’t died in Sicily and the Germans hadn’t lost the war, I wouldn’t be here. So, he sacrificed for me in that way. I was instilled with an obligation to serve our nation. I was raised that way. My father was raised that way. He wanted me to be an American, but that all stems from his German upbringing.” Guran’s father died in 2009. Visiting his grandfather’s final resting place also honored his father, who never got to pay his respects to his father. “That is why it was important for (Guran) to put both a German flag and an American flag at the grave,” Michelle Guran said. “It all came full circle.”

sound like him. But now I listen to it and it sounds hokey,” he said. Bautell eventually stopped trying to mimic Cronkite and developed his own style. His mentor at the time was Hal Walker, one of the first black American foreign correspondents. Bautell was a parttime stringer for ABC radio in Bonn, where Walker was assigned. “Hal helped me focus on the most important facts in a story and not get distracted by side issues and too many words,” Bautell said. “He really boosted my confidence.” That training paid off later when Bautell got to cover what he calls his most memorable story. “Watching the Soviet Union crumble in place was mind boggling,” he said. “I got to travel to a former Soviet army headquarters in East Germany and see close up what was unimaginable for me to see just weeks before. They were polishing tanks, a band was playing and they had troops marching — all for me and my cameraman. Later I got to see an underground East German airfield bunker that was supposed to protect several hundred people in the event of a nuclear strike. The only problem was the air vents in the bunker were simply holes in the roof with no filters.” Bautell’s voice, fluent German and experience as a journalist made him the obvious choice to interview or meet every German chancellor from Willy Brandt to Angela Merkel, as well as many U.S. secretaries of defense and even presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. American historian John Provan, who has lived in Germany for 50 of his 57 years, said: “To many Germans, Gary is AFN. Whatever German-American historical event I work on, Gary is the first name organizers want as a master of ceremonies or guest speaker.” In 2010, the Federation of German-American Clubs elected Bautell as the president of all of their clubs. “Gary stands for everything positive in America. He’s a wonderful, friendly person and has made a great impact on German-American relations,” said federation Vice President Dr. Elizabeth Wittig. Bautell is the only American out of nine members of the federation’s board of governors. Bautell said one theme keeps coming up when he meets Germans. “They constantly tell me how horrible 9/11 continues to be for them. Now, Americans are behind walls and fences and it’s become very hard for Germans to meet them and make friends,” he said. Prior to 9/11, many American installations were wide open and Germans could drive onto post. “My advice is if the Germans can’t easily go to you … go to them,” Bautell said. Bautell, 70, shows no signs of slowing down, let alone retiring. The last 30 years of his career have been as a supervisor as well as talent. He’s currently the chief of network radio for AFN Europe. He has guided and mentored more than 600 different military journalists. Many of them still work at CNN, ABC and other radio and TV stations across the U.S. “I feel half my age and at the top of my game,” he said. “If I wasn’t doing this I’d being doing it for free for somebody.” So, like the autobahn and tasty beer, a tour in Germany will still include the familiar voice of Gary Bautell, the friend you know but have never met.

MMA: Competing through dedication, training by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

irmen around base use various outlets to better themselves physically. Some workout with friends, others play sports. But some Airmen, like Tech. Sgt. Jerry Nelson, 603rd Air Operations Center personnel recovery controller, simply beat people up. He does this by practicing and competing in mixed martial arts, which is a combination of wrestling, Brazilian jujitsu, boxing and kickboxing. Nelson has competed in multiple fights in various regions, earning a record of 6-1 along the way, even appearing on pay-per-view TV. “My favorite experience was fighting for the Pancrase association in Japan,” Nelson said. “Pancrase was the first organization in the history of MMA. Many MMA legends, such as Ken Shamrock and Bas Ruttan, competed in Pancrase prior to the (Ultimate Fighting Championship). I had always dreamed of fighting there.” Competing isn’t just about the few minutes in the ring, it’s also about the weeks of preparation for each fight. “MMA requires you to push yourself to levels you never thought were possible. The amount of technical skills you have to learn from all the disciplines is truly staggering,” said Ashley Bradt, fellow MMA fighter and coach. “All that coupled with the long hours of training, ridiculously strict diet, as well as balancing your home and military life is pretty strenuous. You have to be equally strong mentally as well as physically.” Bradt said MMA requires a different type of stamina, rather than the kind weight lifters or distance runners may have. “There are plenty of people who can run fast or lift heavy weights in the gym, but you can’t run inside a cage and weights don’t try to kick you in the head,” he said. “It takes a lot of courage to walk out in front of a large crowd of your friends, family and other spectators while putting your body on the line.” As far as training goes, Nelson displays true work ethic toward preparing for a fight. “Jerry is one of the most dedicated people I’ve ever had the pleasure to train along side with,” Bradt said. “Whether it’s boxing, jujitsu, muay thai or wrestling training, he puts everything he has into it, putting long hours in at the gym on top of his duty hours with the Air Force.” Nelson said fighters need to go into matches prepared and with enough training because participants can’t take breaks. “What I appreciate most about MMA is that there are no shortcuts, you have to put in the work to be successful,” Nelson said. “If I don’t train properly or don’t stick to my diet, then I don’t deserve to win.” MMA isn’t just for adults. Children and teenagers can participate as well. “There are young children training all over the world today. Just like any other combat sport, safety must be the No. 1 priority when training youth,” Nelson said. “It is important for them to

work primarily on technique to build a good foundation. They should hold off on sparring and competing until they are older and have proven that they have enough technique to properly protect themselves.” Nelson, for example, has been involved in MMA for 17 years, starting when he was 18 years old. “I was hooked on the sport after seeing it for the first time,” he said. “At the end of my senior year in high school, I started training with former UFC champion and current UFC Hall-of-Famer Dan Severn.” Many people have been involved in Nelson’s career or have been influenced by him throughout his tenure as a MMA fighter. “I have had many mentors throughout my fighting career. My longtime mentor has been Jon Bozung, my first MMA instructor (who) used to coach me at Dan Severn’s gym in Michigan,” Nelson said. “Nowadays, I do a lot of mentoring. Winter safety — Injuries related to cold

xposure to cold can cause frostbite or hypothermia and become life-threatening. Infants and elderly people are most susceptible. What constitutes extreme cold varies in different parts of the country? In the South, near freezing temperatures are considered extreme cold. Freezing temperatures can cause severe damage to citrus fruit crops and other vegetation. Pipes may freeze and burst in homes that are poorly insulated or without heat. In the North, extreme cold means temperatures well below zero. Wind chill is not the actual temperature but rather how wind and cold feel on exposed skin. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body at an accelerated rate, driving down the body temperature. Animals are also affected by wind chill; however, cars, plants and other objects are not. Frostbite is a damage to body tissue caused

by extreme cold. A wind chill of -20 degrees Fahrenheit will cause frostbite in just 30 minutes. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in extremities, such as ﬁngers, toes, ear lobes or the tip of the nose. If symptoms are detected, get medical help immediately! If you must wait for help, slowly rewarm affected areas. However, if the person is also show-

ing signs of hypothermia, warm the body core before the extremities. Hypothermia is a condition brought on when the body temperature drops to less than 95 F. It can kill. For those who survive, there are likely to be lasting kidney, liver and pancreas problems. Warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness and apparent exhaustion. Take the person’s temperature. If below 95 F, seek medical care immediately! If medical care is not available, warm the person slowly, starting with the body core. Warming the arms and legs ﬁrst drives cold blood toward the heart and can lead to heart failure. If necessary, use your body heat to help. Get the person into dry clothing and wrap in a warm blanket covering the head and neck. Do not give the person alcohol, drugs, coffee or any hot beverage or food. Chief’s Corner: Where is your focus? by Chief Master Sgt. Gregory N. Myers HQ USAFE A3/10 superintendent

here is your focus? I have seen a disturbing trend over the last few years that tells me our focus may not be where the Air Force needs it to be. I recently heard about a young technical sergeant who was unhappy with her new duty title. She approached her superintendent with concerns that the new title may negatively impact her chances of making chief master sergeant. While I applaud her long term goals, I can’t help but wonder if her focus is off. As a technical sergeant, she should be focused on two things: perfecting her technical skills and leading her people to meet the mission. She should be doing the absolute best with whatever job or duty title is given to her. It is the job of her leadership to recognize and reward her based on the merit

of her performance. Unfortunately, in today’s Air Force, there are some “leaders” whose focus is in the wrong direction; some may be too busy looking out for their own careers that they don’t have time to develop leaders underneath them. When people are so focused on their careers, and their personal future, there is a tendency to sacriﬁce the collective present. We start to look for ways to pad our resume to make ourselves more competitive. Is that what we are about? When we engage in community activities because we can get a bullet out of it rather than for the opportunity to make a difference, we sully the core value of service before self. Service — now that is a word we should focus on. Have we somehow lost sight of the broad stripes and bright stars that should completely capture our focus? Maybe, because we have become so selfconsumed, we have forgotten that service can be hard, uncomfortable, cold, dreary, and even deadly;

it is also what we proudly signed up for. Maybe the career counseling we need to concentrate on is how to do our jobs better, how to become better leaders, and how to do it all without the thought of how it may just be useful in helping our careers. That’s the real enemy of our service today: self. It clouds our judgment and steers our decisions down a path of indulgence. We lose the ability to make decisions for the good of the Air Force. How do we ﬁx it? Do your absolute best at whatever mission you are given and demand the same of those you lead. Get over yourself; identify leadership potential and purposely develop people to take your place. Change your focus outward rather than inward. What can you give today? Not for a bullet, not for a medal, not for position, not even for a stripe. Think of what you can do for the betterment of our Air Force and the protection of our nation — that should be your focus.

he post offices around the KMC play a vital role in linking Airmen to their family and friends. During the holiday season, the rush of mail was at its highest. To help alleviate the pressure of the holiday mail rush, the post offices looked for extra volunteers. “It’s nice to be able to help out during this (holiday) season, since they are so busy,” said volunteer Megan Detroye. “This is probably the most fun volunteer job I’ve ever done.” The Airmen of the Ramstein Northside Post Office know that handling twice the normal amount of trucks might appear to be a daunting task. However, with the help of volunteers and the hard-working Airmen of the 86th Communications Squadron, the holiday mail and packages still arrived on time. “Volunteering is incredibly important. It relieves a lot of stress and eases out the process for the workers and customers,” said Senior Airman Jonathan Lee, 86th CS postal specialist. “We can never have too many volunteers. During the holidays when the workload is higher we always catch ourselves hoping for more volunteers.” Lee said the volume of mail coming in and going out was four to five times higher than any other month he has seen.

Essentials of Barcelona Story and photos by Meghan Augsburger Ramstein High School intern

From tiny tapas restaurants to bustling shopping streets, Barcelona has a wide range of attractions and cultural experiences for the entire family. Getting to the City Driving is always an option for getting to Barcelona. However, for short trips, flying is recommended. If booked far enough in advance, cheap tickets can be found. On arrival at Barcelona International Airport, it’s important to note that several safe modes of transportation exist. One of the easiest ways to get to the city is with the Aerobus. It picks up and drops off passengers at terminals one and two. The ride takes about 30 minutes with a few stops at popular hotel areas. A single journey ticket costs €5.65. A full trip costs €9.75 and lasts for nine days. Terminal two also has a train station with a connection to Barcelona. Tickets cost €3.60. Though it is convenient, it cannot take you all the way into the city. Transferring to the metro system is necessary. Gastronomy While visiting the capital of Catalunya, one cannot resist the culinary delights prepared in every tapas bar. Tapas are snacks or finger foods that vary depending on the region. These little canapes are served hot or cold throughout the entire day. Typical tapas include: • Patatas bravas — potatoes in a spicy sauce • Patatas aioli — potatoes in garlic mayonnaise • Calamares — fried squid • Jamon serrano — dry-cured ham • Croquetas — croquettes usually

filled with chicken, ham, or cod • Tortilla Espanola — potato and onion omelet • Pa amb tomaquet — tomato and olive oil bread Lunch is the largest meal of the day, consisting of up to three or four courses. It is usually eaten between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., followed by a short nap, called a siesta. Traditionally, lunch starts with an appetizer, such as Jamon Serrano or other dried meats. The first course often includes a vegetable dish or a rice, potato or pasta based soup. A fish or shellfish dish such as Paella, a rice dish cooked with vegetables and various types of seafood, make up the second course. Roast lamb, pork and sausage dishes follow. Finally, the meal ends with a traditional dessert like Crema Catalana, a Catalan creme brulee. Catalans, especially in Barcelona, created their own version of surf ‘n’ turf. “Mar i muntanya” dishes combine seafood from the Mediterranean and delicious meats, such as lamb, from the mountain region. Locals eat tapas throughout the day because dinner is served as late as 9 p.m. Churros and a thick, whole milk hot chocolate are popular midnight treats. Sightseeing Barcelona is filled with beautiful historical sights. One of the most famous landmarks is La Sagrada Familia, a unique basilica built by Gaudí. The overall design of the church is quite gaudy with its intricate biblical carvings and unusual towers. On the inside, however, La Sagrada Familia remains surprisingly light and welcoming. Pillars line the center, carved to represent trees in a forest. The entire building was designed using principles of nature, such as the honeycomb structure of the windows

and leaf-like curvature of the roofs. Another well-known attraction is Las Ramblas, a long street filled with vendors, restaurants and human statues. At the end sits the Christopher Columbus monument, called Colom. Tourists can ride an elevator to the top of the column where they’ll find a great view of the city. For those who enjoy seeing local activities, the market of La Boqueria is the perfect stop. One can see the hustle and bustle of shopkeepers while admiring all of the exotic foods showcased by each vendor. La Cathedral de Barcelona is another interesting sight located at the heart of the city. Visitors have four options to explore: • Exploring the inside of the cathedral • Riding the elevator to the roof for a view of the city • Walking through the small garden sanctuary • Visiting the cathedral museum and gallery Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, a UNESCO world heritage site, is also highly recommended for its architecture and beautiful gardens. The entire complex is connected by a system of underground tunnels. Though it hasn’t

been used as a hospital since June 2009, tours are given daily between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The 1992 Olympic park may appeal to sports fans touring Barcelona. The sports complexes and stadium are all located in Parc Montjuic, the site of the Magic Fountain show. The stadium itself was used for many different events, before it was renovated for the Olympics. Activities for Kids Families with small children have plenty of options. The perfect attraction for an animal loving family is the Barcelona aquarium. The aquarium features a variety of tanks with tropical, Mediterranean and deep-sea species. Visiting the Barcelona zoo is also recommended. Directly next to the aquarium is an IMAX theater, the first IMAX integral theater in the world. Customers have three viewing options: traditional IMAX, 3D and Omnimax. Omnimax movies are projected in a semispherical theater. At night, the Magic Fountain show takes place in Parc Montjuic. With its flashing, colorful lights and music, it is a perfect event to take children to.

Pump it up! by Senior Airman Caitlin O’Neil-McKeown 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Men and women from all branches gathered from around the KMC for the biannual Bench Press Competition. The event was hosted by the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center, with each individual participating for the coveted title. Congratulations to Tech. Sgt. Roderick Johnson, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, for winning overall in the men’s division and to Sandi Griffin for taking the female category during this year’s second biannual bench press competition. “Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you’re huge or buff, it all depends on how much you can lift,” said Tech. Sgt. Dwayne Haynes, 786th Force

Support Squadron. “This event gives something for people to work for … and the winner gets a trophy.” During the competition, participants are separated into respective weight classes. Regardless of their class, each participant is given three chances to display their bench-press abilities. The participants select their first weight and can choose to stay at the same weight or lift more in the second and third rounds. Employees at the fitness center were ready and prepared for the event. “Spotters are standing ready, so when the event starts you can get on the bench, keep it safe and do your best,” Hayes said. Training was also a big step in competing in the event. “People come in at all
