COMMENTARY: Ascending to spiritually mature leadership by Capt. Michael Hofer 765th Air Base Squadron Imagine for a moment a fourtiered fountain. The bottom basin is broad, but shallow, and each next higher level of the fountain gets progressively narrower, but deeper, until the narrowest and deepest tier at the top of the fountain. Representing stages of spiritual maturity, each next tier up the fountain represents a thorough reappraisal of values and a transformational shift of perspective. In this paradigm, the least effective leader at the lowest tier emphasizes the value of material objects. Not altogether wrong, this leader sees their position as a caretaker of things. A leader at this tier sees their job as a steward of assets; optimizing investments and mitigating losses. Whatever else is true, a person who does not take this responsibility seriously would be quickly dismissed. Frivolity and waste are hardly the qualities of maturity, but neither is an exaggerated valuation of things. Objects, after all, are meant to be used. NEW MISSION from Page 1 Kaiserslautern at Vogelweh Military Complex, Feb. 5. Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th AW commander, and Command Chief Master Sgt. Hope Skibitsky gave some new insight into the new mission statement they released in a letter to the wing in late January. While our mission is complex, we wanted to keep our mission statement simple, Olson explained. These three ideas are the essence of what we do here at Ramstein and why we’re here. The mission is all about what we do, the vision is where we want to go, and the lines of effort are how we’ll get there. “Build Airmen, Project Power, and Support Partners” is the new mission statement for the 86th AW. “Building Airmen is what we do as a profession,” said Olson,

The second tier up the leadership fountain prioritizes actions over things. “A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are made for,” wrote John A Shedd in “Salt from my Attic.” Bracketing the power of symbols for a moment, the value of objects is in their usefulness and the mature leader recognizes that using a thing risks the investment. Planes are meant to fly, infrastructure is meant to be occupied and funding is meant to be spent. Risk is to be managed rather than avoided because not using a thing to protect it is the biggest waste of all. A baseline grasp of this tier is fundamental to leadership; a person afraid to risk objects is not the leader, whether or not they are in charge. Leaders at the third tier of spiritual maturity recognize that humans are categorically more valuable than the activities and objects of the lower tiers, which is reflected in the depth of the basin. Leaders who articulate this hierarchical val-uation of people, activities, and

things are off to a great start, but true maturity manifests itself in daily interactions, impromptu situations and unforeseen circumstances. Taskers, deadlines and regulations are part and parcel of leadership roles, but cutting team members down for the attainment of a thing or haranguing them for a failed action following innovative protocols gets noticed. Followers are incredibly perceptive — especially when it becomes the rule instead of the exception. The fourth tier and true source of the fountain is yet higher than humans. Teeming with spiritual energy, this basin is where leaders engage with their deepest principles. The Air Force values of integrity, service, and excellence in all we do exist here as do personal values. For theists, this dialogue is prayer. Leaders operating at this level live in conversation with the fountain’s source and it is here that their relationships, activities and objects find renewal. Borrowing from Simon Sinek’s paradigm in “Start with Why” this top basin represents the ‘why’ of the

organization. Flattening the fountain model and adding a circle makes the adaptation more clear. Engaging the ‘why,’ a leader appreciates that “the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” At the heart of every organization are the values that enliven it — the inviolable things to which leaders hold themselves and their collaborators accountable. In effecting and articulating these values, the leader fosters the communal narrative. The more compelling the story, the more energy that spills over to the ‘who’—real people with impressive competencies and realistic limitations. Bringing the ‘why’ into dialogue with the ‘who’, the team formulates the ‘how.’ A sensitivity to ‘how’ is foundational to leadership — motivating people to contribute earnestly to a particular goal. Finally, the ‘what:’ this is where performance metrics capture how much water is making it to the lowest level. Though the easiest to quantify, the levers that influence it are not always obvious. Returning to the fountain para-

digm, perhaps the clearest expression of flowing water is the domain of constructive feedback. Bringing people into dialogue with the ‘why,’ leaders help teammates contribute to the very heart of the organization. Done well, feedback emphasizes the value of people above their usefulness and personalizes overarching principles. Done poorly (or not at all), the tax that organizations pay for spiritual immaturity is high — surfacing first in unit culture as a reticence to contribute and eventually in mission execution. The differences can be striking: whereas less mature leaders grumble when the lower and shallower basins dry up, spiritually mature leaders focus on the water’s source to replenish their organizations. To be sure, trying times reveal the mature among us for it is precisely on such occasions that spiritual women and men embolden their collaborators to surpass them. This is leadership in its finest moments — investing in the next generation and pushing them to new heights of character.

emphasizing the command team’s focus on their personnel. The wing’s new vision is “Adaptive Airmen… Ready to Execute.” “The vision maintains our focus on building Airmen,” said Skibitsky. “That’s truly what’s at the heart of everything we do at Ramstein. Every leader’s responsibility is to develop that next generation of Airmen. We have to be ready for the future fight.” Olson and Skibitsky both agreed that they see a need for creativity and innovation as the wing continues to operate and adapt. “When all of our Airmen are led, properly trained, equipped and resilient they are capable of adapting to any situation and overcoming any obstacle,” said Skibitsky. “Our focus is always on the how we will continue to accomplish the mission, and we

do that by developing adaptive Airmen.” Unlike previous mission statements, the command team made the decision to include unique lines of effort as a part of their new strategy. The lines of effort supporting the new mission and vision are “Develop Airmen and Care for Families,” “Facilitate Installation Excellence,” and “Strengthen Relations with Joint and Allied Partners.” “We were very intentional in using lines of effort versus priorities,” said Olson. Lines of effort are broader than singular priorities. “Looking out for people is first because it’s where the success of our mission starts and ends.” In practice, this looks like equipping our Airmen with skills for their lives inside and outside the Air Force, Olson explained.

“We need to modernize,” said Olson. Facilitating installation excellence looks like efficient and effective usage of the resources at the wing’s disposal. Olson went on to highlight how joint and allied partnerships are foundational to the success of the Ramstein mission. Routinely engaging with exercises and missions across Europe and Africa is vital to building stronger relationships with partners we rely on. The command team also addressed the meaning of readiness and professionalism. “We’ve got to be proud of the fact that we are protecting and defending our nation,” Skibitsky said. “The way that we demonstrate that pride is through our professionalism.” In addition to the wing’s new mission, the command team also stressed the importance of staying disciplined in the fight against

COVID-19. The pandemic has challenged and exhausted us in many ways, Skibitsky explained. It’s on leaders to set the right example and hold each other accountable. As we strive to be adaptive Airmen, we can’t forget to maintain readiness. “Readiness is at the forefront of what we do every day. In that readiness is our discipline, and thus our accountability,” Skibitsky said. Innovating communication Story and photos by Ricky Baptista 65th Air Base Group Public Affairs

Innovation is alive and well in the men and women of the 65th Air Base Group, Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. This strategic power projection platform supports five combatant commands by providing enroute support to global operations and Department of Defense communications. Doing more with less and finding new, innovative ways is the norm at this geographically separated unit. During the 2015 downsizing at Lajes Field, excess infrastructure was identified to be returned to the Portuguese government. In line with that consolidation effort and the 2023 Area Development Plan, building T-205 needed to be deactivated. Currently, building T-205 houses the Meridian-SL legacy phone switch, which runs many of the bases’ systems on copper cable. One of Lajes Field’s primary capabilities, strategic communications, is performed through the communication systems housed within T-205. Among other things, these systems enable Defense Switched Network (DSN) capabilities for aircraft transiting the Atlantic Ocean. Needless to say, the importance of this infrastructure and its final disposition is of paramount

Tall.

importance to overall mission success. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Crafts and his team in the 65th Air Base Squadron’s network management and infrastructure shop engineered an innovative solution that not only allows the 65th ABG to return the property two years early to the host nation, but also saves the U.S. Air Force $147,000 annually. Understanding that the communications equipment had degraded, and was well beyond its recommended end of life cycle, Crafts coordinated with the High Frequency Global Communications System Program Management Office at U.S. Air Forces in Europe and developed a fiber alternative for the airto-ground capability. This included running new cable and identifying unused connection points to complete the circuit. While these actions may seem simple, the process had to ensure a continued platform for communications while filtering through infrastructure that was over 40 years of age and poorly identified. As a result, Lajes can decommission an unneeded $3.7 million MSL-100 unit and improve global air-to-ground calling capabilities through their area of responsibility

Airlifter of the week: Behind the medical curtain Story and photos by Senior Airman Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing recognized Tech. Sgt. Tamara Brown, 86th Medical Support Squadron patient administration section chief, as Airlifter of the Week, Jan. 28. While medical practice may involve life-saving surgeries or ambulances racing down the highway, they aren’t the entire story. Plenty of administrative effort goes on behind the scenes to support medical providers. “Being a part of the support squadron, we provide the support needed for the mission to be accomplished, whether it be from helping people through their medical emergencies via medical temporary duties or ensuring members are accurately documented and notified of their COVID-19 vaccination and testing,” Brown said. Brown herself effectively led 13 staff members while she oversaw three work centers and 102 patient administration programs. She streamlined the processing of 14,000 outpatient records, 319 physical evaluation board cases and a $500,000 budget for the Air Force’s second largest patient movement office, which covers a 32 million square mile area of responsibility in support of 39 countries and 76 locations. “We took a down day,” Brown explained. “We came in on a Saturday for our yearly audit and went through our records, all 14,000 of them. Everyone took a section and it was kind of like a workshop going on in here. My team definitely put a lot of work in.”

Additionally, she led the group’s COVID-19 vaccine administration cell by facilitating the registration of restriction-of-movement personnel for COVID-19 testing and expedited the delivery of negative notifications. “As soon as COVID kicked off, I believe the initial process was that people were having to quarantine for the full duration,” she said. Later on during the pandemic, host nation rules changed and allowed people to test out early. “What my team does is make sure they’re fully registered in the system and processes their negative notifications as soon as the

provider contacts us,” Brown said. Furthermore, Brown co-led the administration support and functionality for the flu and COVID-19 vaccine lines. She ensured members were properly trained and 18 positions were manned during daily operations, which resulted in thousands of personnel being immunized. “It was a lot,” Brown laughed. “I know for the flu line back in October, when we initially kicked it off for the active duty members, we were going to the 86th Security Forces Squadron as a mobile team and making sure they were completely vaccinated. We stayed after

work and put in those hours to make sure those units were taken care of.” Finally, as the 86th Airlift Wing’s Combined Federal Campaign project officer, she led 120 key workers and developed a pandemic proof contact plan to engage 115,000 personnel, which resulted in contributions of more than $75,000. “So, I’ll tell you right now, being the CFC representative for the wing, especially for Ramstein, is huge,” Brown said. “We represented the United States Air Forces in Europe and showed that even during hard times, we still lead. It was definitely

a good experience to step out and do something different. It helped me grow as a person, especially with this being my first year at Ramstein.” It’s in all of these processes where Brown says teamwork really counts. “I think [it comes down to] making sure our team is [united]; one team, one fight,” Brown explained. “We ensure everyone understands what our role is in this, the dedication to the job we have, doing what we have to do to make sure that we, as a support squadron, are supporting the mission.”

All about sippy cups

by Maj. Lucy Knippenberg 86th Dental Squadron • Hello moms and dads! In honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month the Ramstein Dental Clinic would like to share some helpful tips on using sippy cups with your child. • When to start: When your baby is ready to sit up in a high chair, usually around six months, your baby is ready to start practicing drinking from a sippy cup! Try adding a small amount of pumped breast milk or formula to the cup. You may also choose to skip the sippy cup altogether and try a small open cup. • Transitioning from bottle: Most babies are ready to ditch the bottle completely by 12 months. • Avoiding accidents: Don’t let your little one toddle while holding their sippy cup. They are unsteady on their feet and

a fall could lead to tooth damage. Water, nature’s drink: It’s best to offer water to your toddler inbetween meals. They can drink milk with their meals. This will help to reduce the chance of a cavity on a baby tooth. Fruit instead of juice: Your toddler can get all of the nutrients they need from eating a healthy diet with fruit. Fruit juice is not necessary and can lead to tooth decay. Time for a cup: A sippy cup is a training tool so that children can learn how to take a sip. Once they can sip they are ready to transition to a small cup. Start practicing with a small amount of water in an open cup by your child’s first birthday. Bedtime: Babies and toddlers should never be put to bed with a bottle or sippy cup. This can quickly lead to cavities for very young children.

• Avoid “no spill” sippy cups: These cups are convenient at reducing clean ups, but the valve that prevents spilling also prevents your child from taking sips. Instead of sipping, your child has to use a sucking motion for the liquid to come out of the cup. This can prolong the amount of time it takes for your little one to learn how to sip from a cup. • Proper cleaning: It’s very important to take apart all of the pieces of the training cup and thoroughly wash between each use. • First dental visit: Your child is ready for their first trip to the dentist when their baby teeth begin erupting or around the age of one. You can call the Ramstein Dental Clinic for appointment availability or you can find a dental home off base with one of the many providers accepting Tricare dental insurance.

KMC volunteers help distribute COVID-19 vaccine Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Group fielded a number of volunteers from the Kaiserslautern Military Community to assist in distributing COVID-19 vaccines to surrounding areas. “By utilizing volunteers, we can restore more medics to their regular duties, enabling the [86th] Medical Group to continue full medical operations,” said Maj. Rajeev Williams, 86th MDG senior group practice manager and control center director. While licensed medical professionals will administer the vaccine, volunteers are able to help the cause by screening patients, taking their temperatures and disinfecting rest areas. Volunteers aren’t required to be nurses or health care professionals. They come from all professions and backgrounds. “I’m not medically trained,” said Sammi Cosgrove, elementary school teacher. “This is still something that is really helping. I encourage people who are looking for something that will be able to lend a hand and support people getting vaccinated and staying safe (to volunteer).” Cosgrove assists the 86th MDG by observing patients for 20-30 minutes after inoculation for signs of adverse reactions. Afterward, she sanitizes the area the patients sat in and prepares for the next wave of patients. “It’s beautifully set up,”

Cosgrove said. “[Physical] distancing is very clear, the volunteers are very good at showing you what needs to be done, and everything is cleaned repeatedly.” Cosgrove wasn’t the only one to volunteer; the response has been overwhelming for the 86th MDG. According to Williams, six hours after posting the request they filled 125 5-hour shifts. Any DOD ID card holder over 18 is eligible to volunteer. “As we get more vaccine supply and can project future dates of vaccine operations, we will open up more slots for volunteers,” Williams said. The previous volunteer sign-up lists were distributed by the Airman and Family Readiness Center and Ramstein Key Spouses. The 86th MDG plans to expand their volunteer outreach effort across the group. For the safety of the community, after a number of hours served, volunteers are considered frontline healthcare workers and are thus eligible to receive the vaccine as well. Volunteers are also encouraged to participate more than once. A global problem requires many hands, and the COVID-19 vaccine distribution is one of many ways the KMC community comes together to help everyone succeed.

Leslie Champion, COVID-19 vaccine distribution volunteer, takes a colleague’s temperature at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center Annex at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 3. Before entering the facility, volunteers must confirm patients are fever-free to avoid contaminating the area.

For more information on the COVID-19 vaccine distribution rollout process, please visit https:// www.ramstein.af.mil/COVID-19Vaccine-Information/. Sammi Cosgrove, COVID-19 vaccine distribution volunteer, speaks with a patient at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center Annex at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 3. One of the duties of a volunteer at the distribution area is observing patients for a period of time following inoculation.

A list of common COVID-19 vaccine side effects are displayed on every chair at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center Annex at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 3. Patients may experience some side effects, which are normal signs that the body is building protection.

Jami Malcolm, COVID-19 vaccine distribution volunteer, reads out COVID-19 screening questions at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center Annex at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 3. Before entering the facility, patients must confirm a lack of COVID-19 symptoms, no contact with positive COVID-19 patients within the past two weeks, and no travel to any area with a high rate of COVID-19 cases.

You found the perfect house for retirement in Germany. Now what?

By FindItGuideProperties.com Excerpts courtesy of German-American Community Office You have been searching for the perfect house for your retirement and you finally found it! It is just the right size for your new life after work and you are ready to pull the trigger on it. Before that next great leap, there are some things you will need to do. If you wish to retire in Germany and are no longer associated with the U.S. military, you will lose your SOFA status and consequently will become a tourist. Continued from front page of Properties section Kottweiler-Schwanden, Krickenbach, Lambsborn, Landstuhl, Langwieden, Linden, Mackenbach, Martinshöhe, Mehlbach, Mehlingen, Mittelbrunn, Neuhemsbach, Niederkirchen, Niedermohr, Oberarnbach, Olsbrücken, Otterbach, Otterberg, Queidersbach, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Reichenbach-Steegen,Rodenbach,Schallodenbach, Schneckenhausen, Schopp, Schwedelbach, Sembach, Steinwenden, Stelzenberg, Sulzbachtal, Trippstadt, Waldleiningen, and Weilerbach), then you would need to contact the Foreigners’ Registration Office in the County Administration (Kreisverwaltung), Lauterstr. 8.

You will have to provide the following: • Proof of income (Einkommensnachweis). Submitting copies of your retirement pay is usually sufficient.

• Proof of health insurance (Krankenversicherung). If you remain covered through the U.S. system, then submit proof of this. Otherwise, you will have to acquire health insurance on the German economy. • Passports and photos of you and each family member. If you are married and your spouse is not German, the above items are also required of your spouse. You will also need to submit a marriage certificate, regardless of your spouse’s nationality. It is advisable to start early on these things, however, as long as you have SOFA status, you cannot start this process. When you lose your status, you will be considered a U.S. tourist who just entered the country. After this, you can stay in Germany for 90 days without needing a status. As soon as you lose the SOFA status, you should begin the process of applying for a residence

permit. Make an appointment at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). Call 0631-365-2245/2584 for the Kaiserslautern City Administration or 0631-7105-201/401 for the County Administration. Take the above items to the appropriate office. Your documents will be reviewed. There is no fixed time for the process. It can be a matter of two weeks or longer. Therefore, it is highly recommended you begin the process as soon as you lose your SOFA status. Usually, a residence permit must be renewed annually. Also, you will not receive German health benefits if you do not pay into the German health care system through employment. Therefore, you will only receive a residence permit if you already have your own health care. If you do end up working on the economy, you will then pay for German health insurance, which entitles you to receive German health benefits. There is no specific job you will need to acquire in order to stay in Germany. Most retirees have sufficient income through their pension.

Barracks managers put ‘people first’ for unaccompanied Soldiers

Sgt. Dahmani N. Bascombe, 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, and Staff Sgt. Dinel C. Taylor, 240th Quartermaster Supply Company, listen as Sonja Schaefer, housing management specialist, talks about the Enterprise Military Housing database during a recent training session. The garrison trains between 65-75 Soldiers each year to be barracks managers. Courtesy photo

by Jason Tudor U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Training Soldiers to help other Soldiers live more comfortably is a people-first initiative the housing office continues to carry out through its barracks management training. Barracks manager training conducted by the Army housing office here has continued through the pandemic during one of the busiest and tumultuous permanent-change-of-station ‘seasons’ on record. As PCSing families move into Baumholder houses, unaccompanied Soldiers must also have quarters in one of the 87 barracks buildings on the garrison's vast footprint. “Where a Soldier lives is an important factor in preserving and enhancing the Army’s all-volunteer force,” said Harald Kastner, chief of the housing office. “The

barracks is their home. Quality facilities and essential services are essential elements to those Soldiers living there.” Through socially distanced, mask-protected learning sessions, the housing office team delivers training to about 65-75 eligible Soldiers each year. The garrison’s barracks are home to about 2,600 troops from units across the globe on sites in Kaiserslautern and Baumholder. The in-person training takes two-and-a-half hours. Barracks managers find much of what they need to know in the 101-page “Army Barracks Management Program Handbook.” The book details facility maintenance, inspections, property management practices, and more. Silke Drumm, unaccompanied housing branch manager, said understanding and updating the Enterprise Military Housing data-

base is the most critical part of the training. EMH helps perform barracks room assignments, terminations, furnishings, accountability, inspections, and utilization. The database provides leaders with real-time data on where Soldiers live, occupancy status, maintenance requirements, and inspection history. EMH data is a source cited in reports by the DOD Inspector General and others. “This is the most important thing they do to take care of the Soldiers,” said Drumm, referring to continuous, accurate update of EMH. “We want Soldiers to feel welcome, have a clean, serviceable room to live in, and ensure that when they leave, they leave the room ready for whoever lives there next.” Another tech tool assisting barracks managers is the new Army Maintenance Application. The app

+ event calendar + movie schedule + travel articles & videos

puts room and building repairs as close as a mobile phone or tablet. Linked within the Digital Garrison app, the maintenance app finished a pilot program in 2020 and is making its way to Soldiers’ phones in 2021. While all the tech resources are helpful, for the barracks manager cadre, Drumm said the one resource that is a necessity to success is hard to come by: time. “The quality of the Soldiers we get for barracks managers is great. They are fast and great with computers!” she said. “But, they also need a little more time to do monthly walkthroughs to check cleanliness, do regular furniture inventory, and more. They don’t have the time to do it, but they need it.” Staff Sgt. Dinel C. Taylor, 240th Quartermaster Supply Company, is the primary barracks manager for

a building filled with fellow NCOs. He said using the training he received and doing the barracks management job well is a duty. “I want to do a good job for my fellow NCOs,” said Taylor, pointing out the importance of ensuring Soldiers' in- and out-processing via EMH. “If I do it right, and I take care of my fellow NCOs, then they will take care of me.” Kastner said while there’s still work to be done, barracks managers and the training they receive is top-notch, according to a recent inspection. “Our housing team and the barracks managers work well together,” Kastner said. “The training the barracks managers received also gained positive feedback.” Taylor agreed. “The trainer taught the class and then walked us through the steps. What a great trainer and a great program!”

A Dental Health Command Europe Soldier demonstrated his commitment to fellow Soldiers and the Army Values by providing aid and assistance to stranded motorists on a snowy day near Baumholder. Spc. Jeffrey Cumbie, a 68E dental specialist assigned to the Baumholder Army Dental Clinic, answered the call in late January to rescue a total of six vehicles and their occupants who had become stranded on snow-covered roads off post. “That morning, I noticed on the Baumholder Dental Clinic group chat that one of our doctors was stuck in a ditch due to the snow storm,” said Cumbie. “When I saw the message, I immediately answered back and told him I was on the way. When I looked up his location, I noticed the doctor was approximately 34 minutes away and I told him I was coming to his location,” Cumbie added. “On the way there I noticed another car also stuck on the road, so I stopped to help them first. While I was assisting that driver, I noticed there were several other cars stranded near a gas station. All the vehicles were sliding and couldn’t make it up the hill, so I stopped and towed them as well.” When it was all said and done, Cumbie towed a total of six different vehicles to safety that day. “I was raised with the philosophy that’s always been true to this day,” said Cumbie. “Help when you can and how you can. And you can’t go wrong doing the right thing.” Cumbie says the motorists were all very grateful for the assistance. “I met some good people that day,” he added.

How are you protecting your heart? by Michelle Thum Regional Health Command Europe According to studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. About one in four deaths can be attributed to heart disease. “Women and men experience heart attacks differently,” said Lt. Col. Renee Howell, Army Public Health Nursing Regional Consultant at Public Health Command Europe. “When thinking of a heart attack, chest pain and shortness of breath come to mind but there are additional signs you need to be aware of.” Men commonly complain about a discomfort or tingling in arms, back, neck, shoulder or jaw. Women, however, tend to exhibit additional symptoms such as nausea or vomiting, unusual tiredness, cold sweat, sudden dizziness and heartburn-like feeling. “You can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease through lifestyle changes and exercise,” said Howell. “Thirty minutes a day, six days a week of aerobic activity with strength training can reduce your risk immensely.” Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, fitness centers across Europe have limited their services or closed entirely, making scheduled exercising a bit more challenging. “Try to use your car less and walk

to heart failure. High blood pressure can also narrow your arteries, which disrupts proper blood flow to your heart or brain and can trigger a heart attack or stroke. 2. Blood Cholesterol: Your healthy target: Total blood cholesterol lower than 200 mg/dL Too much cholesterol can lead to plaque buildup inside your blood vessels. This sticky substance causes your arteries to harden and narrow, which limits blood flow. These blockages can create a heart attack or, if located in the brain, a stroke.

to places that are reachable by foot. Maybe go for a bike ride or take a hike to stay active,” explains Howell. “Your routine of exercising at the gym may need some modification, but it’s still doable.” Small changes in your day-to-day routine can become healthy habits. Regular physical activity, picking healthy foods and drinks such as fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods can help prevent heart disease. PHCE officials also

recommend limiting alcohol intake and not smoking. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. According to Howell it is equally important to know your numbers. “Unlike your family history, ethnicity and gender — which cannot be changed — these factors can be altered by the choices you make every day.” “If you're numbers are higher, this is not permanent. You can change

your health, choose a healthy lifestyle,” said Howell. There are three measurements that are crucial indicators of your overall health and related to risk for heart attack and stroke. 1. Blood Pressure: Your healthy target: 120/80 mm Hg or less If it's too high, your heart must work harder. Over time, high blood pressure can cause the heart to enlarge or weaken. This can lead

3. Body Mass Index: Your healthy target: 18.5 to 24.9 Your BMI is a weight-height calculation that can help determine if you're overweight or obese. Excess body fat increases your risk for a wide range of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It is important to know these critical numbers in your life because they will allow you and your healthcare provider to determine your risk for heart diseases. Regional Health Command Europe provides COVID-19 vaccine updates by Russell Toof Regional Health Command Europe As Army Medical Treatment Facilities across Europe ramp up COVID-19 vaccine distribution to the U.S. military community, Regional Health Command Europe leadership is working hard to keep the community informed. U.S. Army installations throughout Europe are using a phased vaccine distribution process mandated by the Department of Defense. This process prioritizes those most at risk of contracting COVID-19 and those who are most vulnerable to be among the first to receive vaccinations. DOD personnel in Europe should stay tuned to their Medical Treatment Facility’s social media and web channels for the latest information on where the phased distribution process is at and when they will have the opportunity to be vaccinated. Updates on the distribution plan progress are provided every Monday by noon. “At first, we focused on vaccinating healthcare workers and first responders and our deployable forces here in Europe,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Thompson, RHCE’s commanding general. “We are now vaccinating other mission essential personnel, including teachers and installation support personnel performing everyday crucial services. We are also starting to vaccinate beneficiaries over the age of 65 and others determined to be high risk by the U.S. Center for Disease and Control and our medical staff.” The number of people in each priority group varies by location, so Thompson cautions that some locations might move through the population groups more quickly than at others. “Distribution will vary from one clinic to another based on a number

A vial of the COVID-19 vaccine and a syringe sit on a table at the Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station, Pennsylvania, Jan. 28. Photos by Joshua J. Seybert

of factors such as, how much vaccine that clinic received, how many people in each population group, how many people elect to be vaccinated, etc.,” Thompson said. “We ask for your continued patience with our staff who are doing their best to vaccinate the community as quickly as possible, while doing so safely.” Army health clinics are working closely with garrisons and operational units to determine who will be next in line to be vaccinated, and to determine who fits into the high-risk categories. “Our medical staff is currently working to identify high-risk patients and place them in priority groups,” Thompson said. “They are looking at medical history, CDC guidance, and the DOD population schema to determine who should receive the next doses.”

Master Sgt. Luca Farkas, 911th Aeromedical Staging Squadron aeromedical technician, administers a COVID-19 vaccine to a member of the 911th Airlift Wing at the Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station, Pennsylvania, Jan. 28.

The Moderna vaccine being offered to the military community in Europe was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under an Emergency Use Authorization. “I strongly believe that this

vaccine is extremely safe and effective, and while it is absolutely voluntary, I encourage you to make an informed decision to protect yourself, your family, your fellow Soldiers and your community,” Thompson said.

The Moderna vaccine requires two doses, approximately 28 days apart, and many healthcare workers and first responders are already lining up to receive their second dose of the vaccine. “You should follow the instructions on how to schedule a second dose appointment given to you when you received your first vaccination,” said Thompson. “If you were instructed to call the appointment booking line after 14 days, we urge you to make that call and get scheduled for your second dose. Remember, the vaccine is 94% effective only after receiving two doses.” Thompson also emphasized that until the risk of COVID is substantially reduced, it’s still important to continue to wear masks and practice physical distancing. “Remember the three Ws: wash your hands, wear a mask (or face covering), and watch your distance,” Thompson said. “Continue to follow guidance established by senior responsible officers, as well as state and host nation authorities. And if you’re asked to quarantine or restrict movement, please take it seriously. We are all responsible for helping to stop the spread of COVID.”

Can’t-miss German day trips A-Z: Zweibrücken

Zweibrücken, Germany: Statue in Hallplatz in memory of the former pig market which was held here. Bronze sculpture by Kurt Grabert.

by MilitaryinGermany.com Zweibrücken makes for an excellent day trip. Located a few kilometers from the French border, the city is rich with natural beauty, history and a very interesting mélange of sightseeing opportunities. Plus, you get to visit a city that begins with the letter Z, which doesn’t happen every day! Zweibrücken: Four reasons to go Hiking and biking The area surrounding Zweibrücken is lovely. Opportunities for hiking and biking abound during all seasons, and there are even

winter hiking options. Look for caves, springs, and cool geological formations made from limestone and sandstone. Horses Horses are a big deal in Zweibrücken. If you love horses, this is the place for you. It often has equestrian events, and there is even an Icelandic Horse Center, which is as cool as it sounds. Even if horses aren’t ordinarily your thing, you’ll still come away impressed by the beauty of the creatures you’ll find there. Rides and riding lessons are available for riders of all levels.

Water, in all its forms Zweibrücken loves water. There are lakes, swimming pools and spas. There are also lots of winter water opportunities — usually in the form of ice skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing. Shopping When shops are open, Zweibrücken is a great destination. You can find a very popular outlet mall there, and the city center is well worth your time. Be sure to check out the pig statues on the Hallplatz, which commemorate the site of a former pig market.

The one thing you have to see: Zweibrücken Rose Garden Log this one away with your hopes for spring. The Zweibrücken Rose Garden, which is open from April to November, is excellent. Located on a sprawling tree- and pond-filled space in the middle of the city, the Rose Garden is perfect for flower lovers. It will also delight people who are less than excited at the prospect of flowers. During ordinary times, the Rose Garden is home to a number of cultural and artistic events. It’s definitely worth your time to visit. When everything is blooming, there are

few parks that are more beautiful than this one. Getting there By car, Zweibrücken is 40 minutes southwest of Kaiserslautern, 1.5 hours south of Wiesbaden, and 2.5 hours northwest of Stuttgart. Please check the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.
