SECDEF visits Air Force wounded warrior care facility by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Secretary of Defense visited Ramstein Air Base Friday to show his appreciation for the dedicated and hard-working service members who ensure wounded warriors receive world-class care. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta started his visit at the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility here, where in front of more than 100 Airmen, reporters and commanders, he delivered a heartfelt speech on his appreciation for the job of caring for wounded service members. "Continue to do what you do best, which is to take these lives (of wounded service members) and give them a new life so they can be with their family," said Panetta, the 23rd defense secretary. "I deeply appreciate what all of you do, I can't tell you how proud we are of the service you provide." The CASF is a transitional center that provides 24/7 support for all scheduled and unscheduled aeromedical evacuation missions transiting through Ramstein. The CASF ensures safe transport and staging of wounded service members between aircraft and the next higher level of care. See FACILITY, Page 3

Developing people is our job by CMSgt Jacob P. Dunbar 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Superintendent

Commentary

Leaders are empowered with an enormous responsibility, one we cannot take lightly — to develop people. It is not an easy job by any means, and often very frustrating and time consuming. This job requires commitment to a cause much greater than oneself — producing skilled, confident, determined and capable subordinates. Done correctly, developing people can be very rewarding; one can be proud to see the fruits of their labor. Success and failure is determined by subordinates being ready and capable to lead when the opportunity presents itself. Simply, when a person fails at their primary duties; someone did not do their job. If we do it right, people will either be ready for an opportunity to lead or pursue a new career path. We are in an era of monetary cutbacks and personnel downsizing to optimize our force; there is not much room for rework or retraining. Too many times we have all seen where individuals are assigned to a position based on seniority or rank, but were neither prepared nor capable of performing the duties assigned. Skills required to lead are not learned overnight; if this knowledge and experience is not gained throughout a person’s career, failure is almost certain and recovery is close to impossible. It is important that we do our part to give

each person a chance to succeed — develop them. Now how do we develop our people? Set the tone early. When a person walks into our organization, it is crucial that we set the tone early and let them know what is expected. Chart directions and provide continuous feedback on subordinate’s progress, training, job status, unit’s current and future direction, as well as professional development opportunities. Train them: Yes, our days are busy and we have many commitments, but training our people must be a priority. Training should focus on instructions and demonstrations done strictly to develop a person’s knowledge and understanding, enabling them to perform assigned duties with a greater degree of skill and confidence. We must provide meaningful and relevant training to achieve necessary skills for professional development of the individual and growth of the unit. Training must be performed regularly and provide a means to test understanding and progress. If training is successful, we can expect huge returns on our investment — people ready and capable to assume greater responsibilities. Challenge and set them up for success: Put people in situations to apply learning. This is where we evaluate if training is successful. Some people learn faster than others, and some will never catch on. This gives us the opportunity to gauge where more training is needed and to recommend an alternate career path to those who don’t get it.

The critical part to the test is how our people apply judgment. This comes with experience and oftentimes will make or break a person. We will move mountains by improving personnel decisionmaking processes, exposing them to various situations and allowing them to work through the growing pains. Show them the way: Leaders, our people’s success depends on us. There is a lot riding on us to do our job and do it well. We need leaders pounding the pavement, knowing what is going on; training, encouraging, directing people; and cutting off problems before they become major issues. This requires that we step out from behind the desk and make things happen. We must get involved in the people business; get to know about our people, their families, likes and dislikes, capabilities, and issues. Doing this will help us to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of our people to better determine the best course of action to develop and motivate them. Everyone is busy; however we must never let this restrict us from developing our people. “Success or failure at our job can often be determined by the successes and failures of the Airmen we have supervised.” Leaders have a tough but important job. Developing people is necessary; failure on our part could prove detrimental to mission accomplishment. By doing our job right; our organizations will reap huge dividends from skilled, confident, determined and capable people ready to assume greater responsibilities.

Pillar II: Prevent ARIs - Take Care of Your Wingman by Capt. Erika Best ADAPT Program Manager A Wingman flies behind and outside of the leader. His role is vital — to monitor for potential threats that may not yet be visible to others, to communicate those threats clearly, and to help the team avoid the threat to safely complete their shared mission. Clearly a wingman is an essential member of any team in the air. But a good wingman is an asset in all aspects of life, whether at work or at play. The Wingman’s outside perspective may help them to more accurately assess the risks. By sharing this information with the person, or helping them to consider alternatives, the Wingman can help them to avoid public embarrassment or even an ARI. of what to expect. Going out with “like-minded” people who all have the same plan can reduce the possibility of chaos once the drinks start flowing. Here are some things to consider when creating a plan for the night: What are locations that we should avoid? When should we plan on leaving? Should we limit how much money we spend? How is everyone getting home? Who is the designated driver? See WINGMAN, Page 3

"We are extremely honored that the leader of the world's greatest military was able to come and visit," said Brig. Gen. C.K. Hyde, 86th Airlift Wing commander. "The Airmen at Ramstein deliver the world's best aeromedical evacuation capabilities ... it means a lot to us to have Secretary Panetta thank our troops for the selfless jobs they do." Panetta also took the time to answer some questions from the Airmen at the CASF including one about the future of the Air Force with pending budget cuts. "By virtue of the drawdown that is taking place, we must be agile, quickly deployable and flexible, we've got to be able to move," said Panetta. "But we also have to be on the technological edge; we've got to make sure these troops have the best technology available to them for the future." Before coming to Ramstein, the secretary attended a NATO conference, where he talked to European and NATO allies. "We wanted to make clear to our allies that we are going to maintain a significant presence here in Europe," said Panetta. "At the same time we have to maintain our presence everywhere; that is very important to our security. Here in Europe, we are going to have the largest troop presence of anywhere else in the world." He said there will be two additional brigades developed in the U.S. to rotate into Europe to conduct training and exercises twice a year to continue the strong U.S. presence. In addition, Panetta said, "We're going to maintain our forward presence in the Pacific, because that is where some of the problems are that we're going to face in the future and the same thing is true for the Middle East." Panetta started his service to the nation as an Army intelligence officer in 1964 and was sworn in as the defense secretary July 1, 2011.

they now go directly to or from a military installation here in Germany.” Eventually it will be the primary airlift for service members, family members and DoD Civilians on permanent change of station and temporary duty orders between Germany and the U.S. During the reception, RGRC personnel inprocessed 52 Soldiers, 68 family members and 10 pets, in addition to 293 bags. Newly arrived Soldiers were sent to 11 different U.S. Army Europe military communities throughout Germany. Previously the 1st HRSC processed about 19,000 Soldiers and family members yearly at the Frankfurt International Airport. The Patriot Express mission is expected to safely transport this same number of personnel annually. There are seats available for DoD personnel also, however Chadwick said the Air Force and Army members are expected to make up the majority of the passengers. According to Maj. Patrick Niestzche, the officer in charge of the RGRC, and a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the RGRC staff set a goal to have all Soldiers and family Members inprocessed within three hours from the time the first person steps off the aircraft till the time the last person departs on the bus headed toward their assigned duty station. The RGRC not only achieved their goal but completed their mission with time to spare, inprocessing 120 personnel in two hours and 40 minutes. “Today the mission went as we had planned, all timelines were met and we successfully processed all the Army permanent change of station Soldiers and family members through our reception center and on to their community of assignment,” said Niestzche. “Our goal was to be able to process all Soldiers and family members and

go badly. What if we go to another place instead?”

Communicate Threats

Even the best plans sometimes fail. So the next step, when a threat is noted, is to communicate it clearly to others. At times this may mean sharing an unpopular opinion because it is important for safety or mission success. These messages are more easily accepted by others when delivered in a compassionate and direct way. Here are some suggestions: • “I am concerned. This doesn’t seem safe. Let’s get back to the plan.” • “I am worried you may be upset with me tomorrow, if I let you go through with this.” • “This seems like it has potential to

Lt. Gen. Mark P. Hertling, the commander of the U. S. Army Europe and 7th Army, and his wife Sue, greeted incoming Soldiers and family members as they deplaned off of the first Patriot Express flight at the Ramstein Gateway Reception Center Feb. 7 on Ramstein Air Base.

Despite what some may think, a good Wingman is not the person who just puts their friend to bed when the person has had too much to drink. Nor is it the Wingman’s job to hold a friend’s hair when sick from too many drinks. Instead, a good Wingman is one who will speak up, take charge and change the course of the evening before things go downhill. The Wingman seeks to fulfill the mission of the night so everyone can have a good time, while still remaining vigilant and intervening, when needed. This requires decisive action. For example; is a friend already starting to

have them on the way to their gaining military communities within three hours of flight arrival. We were able to accomplish that, which is a huge success for us,” said Niestzche. “With this being the first time we have done this process at the Ramstein Gateway, as with any other mission we came away with a lot of after-action review comments and things we still need to work on internally to make this reception mission an even more efficient and streamlined system.” “One of the guys that I was inprocessing said things were flowing really smooth and that we should keep up the good work,” said Spc. Nicholas J. Collington, a liaison at the RGRC and a native of Washington D.C. “That was good to hear from a sergeant first class so I feel the process was very successful.” The reception team at RAB will continue tracking flights and possible delays and be readily available to

receive incoming personnel regardless of the time or day the flight arrives. Even though this is the first fulltime mission, this isn’t a new task for the air mobility group. “This is the first dedicated flight for service members and their families,” said Chadwick. “However, Patriot Express flights are flown three times a week through Ramstein on their way to bases in Southwest Asia, so this isn’t a new mission for us.” “On a one to 10 scale I would give this experience an eight and up, it was an excellent trip and everything else went so smooth. It was well above any other flight I’ve ever taken,” said Spc. Trenton Kerschner, a K-9 handler headed to Wiesbaden Germany and a native of Hot Springs, Va. “I would definitely do this again. If I could catch one of these on leave while I’m going home I would love to, rather than catching a civilian flight.”

slur? Maybe they don’t need another shot. Instead, offer alternatives: • Get them some water or food while still enjoying the music. • Engage them in a game of pool or darts to distract them from the alcohol for a while. • Offer to take them home, or to another location. Ultimately, being a good Wingman is simple; look out for someone else the same way you want them to look out for you. These simple techniques can help. 56 years of club history The German American and International Women’s Club celebrated 56 years of friendship between Americans, Germans and other nationalities during a gathering Jan. 21 in Landstuhl. “For more than 56 years they’ve cared for the relationship between Germans and Americans,” said Landstuhl’s mayor Klaus Grumer during his opening speech. “The addition of internationality reflects the fact that we are a multicultural society.” More than 60 club members and guests gathered at the Schlosshotel in Landstuhl to help GAIWC celebrate its 56th birthday. The club members were delighted with the appearance of numerous guests of honor, including Grumer and Brig. Gen. C.K. Hyde, 86th Airlift Wing commander. Also welcomed was the president of the Federation of German American Clubs, Gary Bautell, of Wiesbaden. Fisher Houses director Vivian Wilson and Ron Jefferson from the USO Warrior Center presented certificates thanking the club for recent donations to their organizations. Traditionally, members who have been with the club for more than 10 years are honored with a certificate and flowers. Those honored this year were Christa Uhl (15 years), Jeri Bliemel (25 years), Barbara Klein (35 years), Heide Rappenecker (35 years), Maria Rose Moser (40 years) and Karen Lenz (40 years). For 46 years of club membership, Uta Mayr-Falkenberg also received a bouquet. She was the longesttenured member at the celebration. As a surprise for guests, Palatine magician August Müller amazed the crowd with his tricks during a presentation at the end of the program. One of those special stories comes in the form of a 26-year-old Airman — Airman 1st Class Robert Kubicek. Many Air Force members join after high school graduation not Kubicek. He first attended college, graduating with a double major in English and European History. He then went on to teach English in Japan for three years before joining the blue in January 2010. “While I was in Japan, even though I was treated very well, it made me realize how much I got from our country,” Kubicek said. “It made me feel very patriotic and I decided to come back and join a branch of the military.” In his search for a branch to join, Kubicek, who is also studying for his master’s degree in international relations, decided on the branch that would offer him a challenge. “I was looking for the branch with the most challenging career fields,” Kubicek

The safest way to keep your driver`s license is to remain sober while operating a vehicle on public roads. If you still chose to drink and drive, you are facing a risk eventually resulting in serious punishment.

Here you will find the characterization for German alcohol limits: “Promille” (per mill) means onetenth of a percent blood alcohol: • 0,0 Promille: for all drivers 17 to 21 and newly licensed drivers of any age for the first two years. • 0,3 Promille: driving is ille-

In addition, he enjoys the close knit atmosphere of his shop and his teammates. “It can be a trying environment and that brings people closer together,” Kubicek said. “It’s the people you work with that make it fun and make it worthwhile.” Kubicek gives credit to the flight’s success to the high standards set by his leadership. “Our leadership makes this shop special,” Kubicek said. “There’s a longstanding tradition of discipline and always making sure the mission gets done. It’s a great tradition and our leadership embodies that.” The alumnus of Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota plans to resume his master’s courses after he returns from deployment. He stated his short-term goal is getting Senior Airman below-the-zone. As for his long term goals? “Completing my master’s degree and getting my Ph.D. in philosophy,” Kubicek said. After returning to base, I inspected our vehicles while my Marines left to get some rest. “Just as I entered our barracks, a loud explosion blew through the doors and dazed me, making me unable to speak,” Sellers added. “My fellow Marines loaded me into a humvee and rushed me to the field hospital. I panicked after feeling more blood rush down my neck until a calm, peaceful feeling overcame me and everything faded to black.” Sellers then woke up at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and began his path to recovery. After one day of treatment, he was transferred

to Bethesda, Md., to resume treatment. “For the first few weeks of treatment, the medical staff was unsure if I would be able to talk anymore,” said Sellers. “However, after the staff found out I would be able to speak again, I started a long road of speech therapy. There were hours of training on how to move my tongue and eat. “It took two months, but I was finally able to speak clear enough for people to understand me,” said Sellers. Even after the therapy there were still challenges in Sellers’ recovery he had to overcome. “Adjusting to the fact that I was changed forever was difficult,” Sellers said. “I would no longer be able to sound or look like I did before.” Sellers was able to adjust based on support through his family, friends and the Wounded Warrior Project. “I overcame that challenge by surrounding myself with fellow wounded warriors through the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Sellers. “My friends and family were also a big help in my acceptance of who I now am. All of these individuals were able to show me that they accepted me the way I was. “The Wounded Warrior Project got me in contact with other service members who had gone through similar situations,” Sellers added. “They were able to provide advice and encouragement on my road to recovery.”

The Wounded Warrior Project offered Sellers a form of closure by inviting him to re-live the process he went through while still sedated. “I decided to take the opportunity in order to thank the medical staff for all the hard work they do,” Sellers said. “I also wanted the chance to see what happened during my time here.” Tours like the one given to this Florida native are offered to many wounded warriors who wish to see the process of what happened to them. “The importance of these tours is immeasurable,” said Ryan Kules, a Wounded Warrior Project director. “The warrior can thank the medical staff for their help, to experience the recovery process while being able to understand it and show their appreciation to other warriors who are now going through the process they already went through.” Sellers showed his appreciation with this message to the people who organized this tour. “Thank you for the amazing trip I had to Germany. After almost eight years of being injured I had just accepted the fact that those days in Germany would always be a mystery, but because of the WWP team in Germany I was able to put together some pieces to fill in the blanks and get back some of that lost time. Thank you very much.” The Wounded Warrior Project can be contacted through their website, www.

18th MP Bde. Soldiers prepare for upcoming downrange mission by Capt. Amanda L. Kehrrington 18th Military Police Brigade Public Affairs GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — While chilling winds blew and the snow continued to fall, as ice covered the streets and vehicles, Soldiers of the 230th Military Police Company, 95th MP Battalion, 18th MP Brigade, marched on and conducted their Mission Readiness Exercise here Jan. 24 to 27 in preparation of its imminent downrange mission. The MRE for the 230th MP Co., based out of Sembach Air Base, Germany, served as a pre-combat check consisting of real world combat scenarios to prepare Soldiers for the impending mission. “Being put into real world combat situations makes you think on your feet and helps you see what your instincts do and allows you to reassess what you do here and do it right downrange”, said Pvt. Jenna Iannielli, a gunner assigned to the 230th MP Co., 95th MP Bn., 18th MP Bde., and native of Rockaway, N.J. Iannielli was one of numerous Soldiers who joined the 230th MP Co. just prior to drawing weapons and boarding a bus to conduct pre-deployment training. To some Soldiers, deploying downrange or to an area to support overseas contingency operations, is a coveted opportunity. Several of the Soldiers from

the U.S. Army Europe Honor Guard jumped at the chance to help others and volunteered to join a unit scheduled to support OEF. “I have an urge to help people and I feel like I would benefit a lot by deploying and getting real world experience,” said Pfc. Joshua Wilson, a medic belonging to the 230th MP Co., 95th MP Bn., 18th MP Bde., and native of Fontana, Calif. This is the final exercise prior to deployment which gives Soldiers an opportunity to learn from their mistakes during training, while having Observers/Controllers show them the correct procedure. The MRE not only prepares Soldiers for deployment, but also gives unit members an opportunity to develop cohesion by living as a unit actually deployed. This is especially important while integrating new Soldiers who volunteered to deploy with the unit. “Bringing brand new Soldiers into the unit along for the MRE presented a different set of challenges, but the most important thing was to ensure that they felt they were part of the team immediately,” said Capt. Nicholas Ingrao, the 230th MP Co. commander, a native of Ypsilanti, Mich. “I was really nervous because all these Soldiers have been working together forever and I was thrown into the mix,” said Iannielli. “But these Soldiers

really took me under their wing and they are teaching me things so that I execute procedures correctly downrange.” “It has been advantageous having the new Soldiers, myself included, because sometimes people get complacent expecting Soldiers to just know what to do, but with new Soldiers it exercises the ability of non-commissioned officers to lead Soldiers even more,” said Sgt. 1st Class Allan Ring, 2nd platoon sergeant, 230th MP Co., 95th MP Bn., 18th MP Bde., and native of Hampton, N.H. “I hope to bring a new perspective to the platoon and make them think differently and build on their ability to adapt and overcome

different situations,” Ring added. During deployment, the 230th MP Co. will conduct Host Nation Police building in support of Operation Enduring Freedom through Police Combined Action Team mentorship, to improve the operational effectiveness and legitimacy of the Afghan Uniformed Police. According to the United States Institute of Peace Special Report on Afghanistan’s Police, the Obama administration has acknowledged the importance of the police and has intentions to expand and improve the Afghan National Police as a key part of its plan for stabilizing Afghanistan.

Kisling NCO Academy builds partnership with Bulgaria by Master Sgt. Bryan Daniel USAFE NCO Academy At the Kisling Noncommissioned Officer Academy on Kapaun, we have been honored to have a Bulgarian air force student attend each of our last three courses, including the one currently in session. Our most recent graduate was Bulgaria’s Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Ivo Bakardzhiev, who attended class under the instruction of Tech. Sgt. Karin Burke, and alongside his classmates, 15 U.S. Air Force technical sergeants, throughout the seven-week course. Bakardzhiev’s attendance is the culmination of a two-year effort that began in November 2009. Chief Master Sgt. David Lawrence, commandant of the Kisling NCO Academy, first met Bakardzhiev in Sofia, Bulgaria, where they explored cooperation opportunities for enlisted professional military education. They also noted how similar both countries are and how each are committed to advancing the careers of its enlisted members by providing leadership opportunities and training. During the November 2009 visit, Bakardzhiev said, “I think it’s a good idea to cooperate with our NATO neighbors to send our enlisted leaders to courses like the NCO Academy. Until now, we haven’t had very good programs for development of our enlisted forces. Our NCOs need opportunities to develop their leadership skills and improve their English, especially for the positions that require us to coordinate with (neighboring NATO countries).”

“This course is about becoming a better leader,” Burke said. “It is great to have Chief Bakardzhiev in the flight room. He is very passionate about his job and the people he leads. He brings a lot of experience, as well as a foreign aspect to our flight room, which greatly adds to our discussions. The flight has really come together and it is super to see them all having fun learning.” “Without a doubt, having Chief Bakardzhiev attend our academy has enlightened our NCOs,” said Senior Master Sgt. Amber Mitchell, Kisling NCO Academy’s director of education. “We hope in turn to have given the chief some insight into the great investment we put into growing our own enlisted force. We value our partnership with Bulgaria and look forward to continuing that partnership by hosting more Bulgarian students in the future.” Lawrence said he was impressed with the Bulgarian air force’s enthusiasm to develop their enlisted force. “Upon meeting Chief Bakardzhiev, I immediately noticed his passion and drive to lay the foundation for a robust enlisted professional development program,” he said. “Chief Bakardzhiev’s recent attendance at the Kisling NCO Academy reinforces the importance of developing a professional enlisted force, not only in the U.S. Air Force, but for our NATO partners as well. The Kisling NCO Academy is excited to strengthen our relations and will continue to build upon our Air Force’s No. 2 priority, partnership capacity, with our Bulgarian comrades through the Enlisted Professional Military Education program now and in the future.”

“Having Bulgarian students attend the Kisling NCOA represents both countries’ commitment to developing a professional NCO Corps,” said Chief Master Sgt. David Williamson, USAFE command chief. “It provides a unique developmental opportunity by expanding our Airmen’s perspective through a reciprocal exchange of ideas on leadership, airmanship and the profession of arms. As we learn together we become stronger and forge a lasting relationship that promotes interoperability. We look forward to our enduring developmental exchanges with our Bulgarian friends.”

Technology expo draws hundreds to its doors, gives insight to future military tools by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs More than 500 military and civilian members of the Kaiserslautern military community walked into the Officers' Club here Tuesday, to take a peek into the future of emerging technologies. As part of the annual winter technology exhibition, 41 different vendors gathered to showcase the latest and greatest in military advancements. "It's about information exchange; an informal venue for the vendor and military community to speak with each other about the newest technologies," said Jennifer Mason, the event manager speaking on behalf of the Armed Forces Communications Electronic Association. "In today's market, it makes sense to bring all of these advancements to one centralized location for the military members to pull ideas from." With so many different vendors, there was something for everyone.

Video teleconferencing software, distance education, computers, photo accessories, police gear and cloud services to name a few. "This is cool," said 1st Lt. Erica Juchter, 86th Communications Squadron officer in charge of cyber security and readiness, and visiting patron. "It's so convivial, everyone is enjoying themselves; it's events like this that can spark more and more ideas to make the Air Force more efficient in its day-to-day processes." Another, larger technology expo is scheduled for July 16 through 18 with more than 100 vendors on site at the Officers' Club. "In addition to the interaction with military members, this venue provided the vendors a way to find out what is needed by the end users," said Capt. Thomas Hamlyn, 2nd Air Postal Squadron flight commander. "It's all about seeing what companies have come up with to improve on the way we do business." This is the 15th year the technology

Men, beware of women Thursday! by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Thursday is the day when men have to beware of women. It’s one of the craziest days during Fasching season called “Altweiberfasching,” which literally translated means “old women’s Fasching.” It’s a day specifically reserved for females. Altweiberfasching is always observed the Thursday before Rose Monday. Traditionally, females dress as old women or witches. They meet in the morning, walk down the streets, sing songs and in some towns they storm town halls. The women constantly look for victims — men wearing ties. As soon as they see a man with a tie — on the street, in a store, in an office — they get out a pair of scissors and “attack” the man, cutting off his tie. Depending on the area where the tie cutting is performed, the woman might ask the man to either buy her a drink or lose the tie, or she cuts the tie and kisses the man. Women are allowed to act crazy that day and have fun without their “better halves.”

Classes And Training

The tradition of women participating in Fasching goes back to the 15th century. During sermons, priests complained about the exchange of clothes between women and men. In 1558, the city council of Überlingen at Lake Constance was forced to prohibit women’s Fasching celebrations in female taverns and dormitories because of women’s indecent behavior. But the women referred to their female rights, such as drinking and dancing during specific Fasching days. Altweiberfasching also marks the status of women in the 15th and 16th centuries. Wives had well-defined rights, since they were the budget keepers. During the crazy season they sat in judgment of other women who didn’t clean the house or didn’t take care of the children. Later, in several towns in Southern Germany, it became customary to sit in judgment of men. Women usually met in the conference rooms of town halls. That’s why nowadays women still “storm” the town halls on Altweiberfasching to take over control and become fully liberated as on no other day.

In the 17th century, in the Münstertal valley in the Alsace area in France, women walked through the streets with a decorated billygoat, which symbolized fertility, and a horse carrying two kegs of wine. Men weren’t even allowed to observe this procedure from their windows. If a man risked entering a tavern, where females celebrated, he was captured or his hat was taken away from him and only by buying wine he got it back. In Köln, which is one of the main locations to celebrate Altweiberfasching and street carnival, women started protesting against the male government in the 1880s. The three most important people of Fasching in Köln — the prince, the peasant and the virgin, who actually is a man dressed like a woman — officially open Köln’s street carnival. During the opening session, the lord mayor calls out the official carnival shout, “Kölle Alaaf.” After this, it’s up to the women to start their hunt. In Ramstein-Miesenbach, at 11:11 a.m. Thursday, women in disguise will storm the Rathaus (town hall) and capture the men. They will take

the men outdoors and tie them to the “Narrenbrunnen,” the fool’s fountain. Then, the “Altweiber” will cut the men’s ties and, for a fee of at least €1.11, captives will be set free again. Traditionally, women who cut ties that day hang them up as trophies. And men don’t always notice the attack on time, because it’s not necessarily just women in disguise who do it, but also normally dressed females at work. Killjoys won’t wear a tie that day or will choose to wear an old one they don’t need any longer. A big Altweiberfasching

Polizei increases traffic controls

The fifth season is in full gear and the main Fasching days are approaching. The Westpfalz Police Headquarters in Kaiserslautern wants all motorists to get through that season without any accidents and alcohol-related problems. At this time of the year motorists should be aware of an increased number of traffic controls and DUI checks performed by German Polizei. According to the Westpfalz Police Headquarters, 12 alcohol-related traffic accidents occurred during the last seven days of Fasching. One accident was

caused under the influence of drugs. People got injured in three of these accidents and in one accident, one person got killed. Police officials recommend that people who plan to join Fasching events take a taxi or public transportation. Also, remains of alcohol stay in the body until the following day. Therefore, even the morning after Fasching activities, people should not drive their vehicles. Polizei will request a breathalyzer test if they become suspicious of the driver’s way of driving or

attitude. If the suspect refuses the test, Polizei can take the suspect to have blood taken. The suspect has to pay about €70 out of his pocket, if the test is positive. When the blood alcohol level or the breathalyzer concentration is over the limit, the motorist’s drive ends right here. Depending on the level, consequences can be a fine, withdrawal of the driver’s license and a possible lawsuit. (Courtesy of Westpfalz Police Headquarters Kaiserslautern)

Take care of your heart, and it will take care of you by Carrie Shult FORSCOM Health Promotion Project Officer U.S. Army Public Health Command Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States in men and women. Heart disease affects millions of Americans. The American Heart Association estimates that about every 34 seconds someone will have a heart attack. Let’s repeat that—every 34 seconds. So if you are a slow reader, that means several people had heart attacks while you were reading this article. Research about heart disease risk factors suggests that making even small lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke and other serious cardiovascular conditions. What does that really mean, and more importantly what does it mean for you? Let me break it down: Get moving! If you sit a lot, try to sit less. If you have a job where you are at your computer a lot, add a reminder to your electronic calendar every hour to

stand up and walk away, do 15 pushups, get some fresh air. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Avoid being the parking lot shark — lurking around waiting for an open spot in front — and park away from your destination so you can get some extra steps in. Step, march or jog in place for at least 15 minutes while watching television. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day for five days a week or more. Walk. Get a step counter and set a goal to walk at least 10,000 steps daily. Just get moving. Maintain ideal weight. Being overweight increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. To achieve long term weight loss, don’t skip meals but eat 200-300 calories less each day. This amounts to one slice of bread, one pat of butter or one-half cup of regular soda. Big Miracle ― Inspired by the true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure Big Miracle tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter (John Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can’t wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With time running out, Rachel and Adam must rally an unlikely coalition of Inuit natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set aside their dif-

Arthur Christmas ― The 3D, CG-animated family comedy Arthur Christmas, an Aardman production for Sony Pictures Animation, at last reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child’s question: ‘So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?’ The answer: Santa’s exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic - a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns.
