COMMENTARY: A proclamation on National Black History Month Today, I am reminded of something Amelia Boynton said when reflecting on her march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on what would be known as Bloody Sunday: “You can never know where you’re going unless you know where you’ve been.” America is a great Nation because we choose to learn the good, the bad, and the full truth of the history of our country — histories and truths that we must preserve and protect for the next generation. This National Black History Month, as we remember where we have been, may we also recognize that our only way forward is by marching together.

for those who have been historically underserved, marginalized, and adversely affected by persistent discrimination, poverty, and inequality, including the Black community. That includes building an economy that grows from the middle out and bottom up, not the top down. So far, we have created over 14 million jobs and in 2023, the Black unemployment rate was lower than in any other year on record. We are addressing historic health inequities for Black Americans by making systemic changes to our health care systems that increase healthcare access while lowering costs. Today, more Black Americans have health insurance than at any previous time in American history. We are working to address the Black maternal health crisis — ensuring dignity, safety, and support for Black moms. The Vice President has helped elevate this critical issue to a national priority by calling on States to extend

Medicaid postpartum coverage from two months to one year. My Administration is also working to close racial gaps in education and economic opportunity. To that end, we have delivered over $7 billion in funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and are working to expand access to homeownership — a major source of generational wealth for families — while aggressively combating racial discrimination in housing. Our update to the Thrifty Food Plan is keeping 400,000 Black kids out of poverty every month and making sure millions more have enough food to eat. By 2025, we are working to ensure that 15 percent of Federal contracting dollars goes to small disadvantaged businesses, including Black-owned small businesses. We are also replacing poisonous lead pipes so every American can turn on a faucet at home or school and drink clean water. To deliver equal justice under

the law, we are appointing judges to the Federal bench who reflect all of America, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and more Black women to the Federal circuit courts than all previous administrations combined. I also signed a historic Executive Order that implemented key elements of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act: banning chokeholds and restricting no knock warrants by Federal law enforcement, creating a national database of officer misconduct, and promoting effective and accountable community policing that advances public trust and safety. I also signed the first major gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years as well as a long-overdue law to make lynching a Federal hate crime in Emmett Till’s name. My Administration continues to call on the Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to secure the right to vote for every American.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2024 as National Black History Month. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with relevant programs, ceremonies, and activities. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtyfirst day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand twentyfour, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth. This National Black History Month, we celebrate the vast contributions of Black Americans to our country and recognize that Black history is American history and that Black culture, stories, and triumphs are at the core of who we are as a Nation. The soul of America is what makes us unique among all nations. We are the only country in the world founded on an idea. It is the idea that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated with equal dignity throughout our lives. While we still grapple today with the moral stain and vestiges of slavery — our country’s original sin — we have never walked away from the fight to fully realize the promise of America for all Americans. Throughout our history, Black Americans have never given up on the promise of America. Unbowed by the forces of hate and undaunted as they fought for centuries against slavery, segregation, and injustice, Black Americans have held a mirror up to our Nation, allowing our country to confront hard truths about who we are and pushing us to live up to our founding ideals. They have helped redeem the soul of our Nation, ensuring the promises in our founding documents were not just words on a page but a lived reality for all people. In the process, the vibrancy of Black history and culture has enriched every aspect of American life. Since taking office, the Vice President and I have worked to continue this legacy of progress and lay down a foundation for a stronger, more equitable Nation. On my first day as President, I signed a historic Executive Order on Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government. In February 2023, I signed an additional Executive Order to acknowledge the unbearable human costs of systemic racism and to direct the entire Federal Government to advance equity

Airmen FLEX on RAB Story and graphic by Airman 1st Class Olivia Sampson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Facility and Leadership Excellence team, or FLEX, at Ramstein Air Base, is not just a typical base clean-up group. FLEX is a 2-week-long mentorship and leadership program that helps beautify and set up for various events on base. In February 2021, the program underwent significant changes from solely base beautification to be more geared towards mentoring new Airmen on a more personal level. “In our two-week program, we blend mentorship, leadership and base beautification to forge Airmen who not only understand the Air Force’s mission but also cultivate a profound pride in the base they’ll call home,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Hector Martinez, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of the FLEX team. “It’s more than just cleanliness. It’s about hands-on, faceto-face leadership interactions with ranks E-5 to O-7, shaping resilient individuals for personal and professional excellence.” While partaking in base beautification activities, selected Airmen in the FLEX program also spend considerable time attending classes covering mentoring sessions, on-base immersions,

and leadership development. “The program aims to invest in the development of Airmen, particularly those new to the Air Force. FLEX strives to prove ‘Good people make good Airmen,’” Martinez said. “Beyond five or six years, varied leadership experiences shape us. Unfortunately, bad leadership can discourage Airmen. Flex breaks this cycle, highlighting the impact of good individuals who evolve into great leaders, fostering an environment of growth and resilience. It’s about building strong NCOAirmen bonds, ensuring success in the Air Force.” U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Quentin Cooper, 86th Maintenance Squadron aircraft structural maintenance apprentice participated in FLEX during April 2023. “Flex was a game-changer for me,” Cooper said. “Offering a rare opportunity to team up with folks outside my usual crew sharpened my networking skills, usually a challenge in the daily routine. As a fresh Airman, it also helped me navigate semi-formal conversations with my higher-ups. This program, all about pushing limits and nurturing growth, pushed me out of my comfort zone, packing in new knowledge and lifelong friendships.” Cooper’s main takeaway from FLEX was gaining a comprehensive understanding within the

workplace. The program enables him to see beyond his specific role, fostering connections with individuals he might not have otherwise encountered.

Martinez draws inspiration from witnessing Airmen thrive in the two-week class and hopes to expand the program to other bases. He underscores the impor-

tance of investing in new Airmen to enhance and innovate the overall force, and encourages commanders to submit their new Airmen into the program.

Rest in peace to No. 2 pencil: RAB introduces eWAPS testing Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Regan Spinner 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein Air Base will begin administering promotion testing electronically starting this month to U.S. Air Force Airmen participating in the 2024 technical sergeant and staff sergeant promotion cycles. The electronic Weighted Airman Promotion System testing center is located on Ramstein in building 2106, room 215. This location can accommodate 60 Airmen per testing session. “I know everyone who has tested before has had to rely on the trusty No. 2 pencil, but we have evolved in 2024,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Louis J. Ludwig, 86th Airlift Wing Command Chief. “This change is one way the Air Force is working to modernize its IT systems. This is going to be a big one for our enlisted members.” Airmen eligible to promote should keep an eye out for an email that will direct them to the PearsonVUE website, where they

will create an account before being contacted by Test Control Officers or unit WAPS monitors to come to the eWAPS office to sign for a test

date and receive testing instructions. Some of these requirements include arriving on time and in

uniform with their Common Access Card and having their username and password with them on the day of their test.

Arriving without a username and password can result in being marked as a no-show for the test. Airmen can retrieve their username and reset their password using their first and last name and their email account by responding to security questions they established during the account creation process. Failure to access their PearsonVUE account will result in a no-show. Ramstein has the largest number of promotion testers in the Air Force, testing over 1,500 people each testing cycle. The eWAPS system, paired with the testing center, is able to accommodate all those people and more. “Being able to do most of the work electronically is going to enable the testing center to push through 60 testers per session within 15 days,” said Ludwig. “That means that we are going to have 1,800 available seats for people to test.” This new process not only streamlines and enhances the efficiency of the promotion testing process; it stands as a testament to the Air Force’s unwavering dedication to quality and innovation.

Choosing your wings: Unveiling distinctions between US Air Force service paths Story and graphic by Airman Dylan Myers 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs What is the difference between an in-service recruiter and an active duty recruiter? An active duty recruiter’s job is to recruit, mainly, non-prior service members into the active duty Air Force. An in-service recruiter’s job, however, is to ensure active duty members know about their options for continued service after separating active duty and act as a separation advisor. Additionally, the in-service recruiters here also support nonprior service members wanting to join the Air Force Reserves as well. What are the differences between the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve? The Air National Guard is a state entity that is primarily state funded, however can be called upon for federal missions, while the Air Force Reserves is a federal entity. The Air Force Reserve’s primary mission is to support active duty and offset different imbalances that they may have so we carry, for the most part, the same mission sets as active duty does. The National Guard’s primary mission is to support the state.

What is Palace Front? Palace Front is when a member completes their entire active duty service obligation and the next day they enter the Air Force Reserves. What is Palace Chase? Palace Chase is when a member is leaving active duty early, and they are asking to curtail their contract and go to the guard or reserve. For Palace Chase, if a member is approved, they will have to give the Air Force Reserves or Air National Guard two times their remaining time on active duty for the enlisted and three times remaining active duty service commitments for the officer side. So the member is going to incur a new ADSC through the reserve going through that program. Active duty service members are eligible for the Palace Chase program when they have completed two-thirds of their initial service commitment. Can you cross train in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve? Service members do not have to stay in the same Air Force Specialty Code. The reserve can cross train people much easier than on active duty, according to Master Sgt. Zach Nusbaum, 351st Recruiting Squadron. They do not have to go through any addition-

al organizations making it faster and easier to start the process. Nusbaum’s office is the cross train authority for Ramstein active duty service members looking to go reserve. What are some benefits of going to the Air Force Reserve from Active Duty? In the last year or two, every enlisted Airman has got a bonus if they stayed in their AFSC. Additionally, members who do not live next to a base can participate in individual mobilization augmentee programs where the Air Force pays for travel. If the member does travel again, enlisted only will reimburse up to $500 round trip for service members to participate in these programs. Reduced health care prices and pensions can also be driving incentives when choosing to continue serving through the guard or reserve. Frequently Asked Questions: What is basic training like? Basic Military Training is the first of three steps for your military career. It is a place where recruits are going through 7 weeks of training before technical schools. “You get told what to do, where to be, and how you are often wrong

in the hopes of improving trainees mentally, physically and helping them become more disciplined,” said Master Sgt. Joshua Cherry, 319th Recruiting Squadron Europe Operations Recruiting Program manager. “Everyone will handle Basic Military Training differently, but the goal is to shape you into an Airman.” How can members learn more information on joining the guard or reserve? Both Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard In-Service

Recruiters have a recorded brief as part of the Transition Assistance Program. They also host a briefing on the second Monday of every month at 1 p.m. through Herc University. Additionally, they can brief squadrons upon request. The information in this article was provided by Master Sgt. Zach Nusbaum, 351st Recruiting Squadron in-service recruiter, and Master Sgt. Joshua Cherry, 319th Recruiting Squadron Europe Operations Recruiting Program manager.

FLOs from Germany, Great Britain, Greece, France, Lithuania, Poland, Netherlands, Denmark, Latvia, and Finland shared their respective countries’ perspectives on setting the European theatre. The meeting covered the various methods and modes of transportation utilized in projecting combat power into the European continent. The FLOs spoke to their nations’ specific lessons learned from internal movement operations within their own borders. “Now more than ever our collective defense needs to be backed up by collective sustainment,” said 21st TSC Deputy Commanding Officer Col. Todd Allison. “We can’t do what we do without your host nation support." According to DMC planner Maj. Nathan Ray, 21st TSC’s goal was to leverage those lessons learned and integrate them

OHA survey empowers KMC service members by Airman 1st Class Trevor Calvert 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An Overseas Housing Allowance and Utility Expense Survey is open from Jan. 1 to March 31 by the Department of Defense and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Military Compensation Policy Directorate. The survey collects data from uniformed service members stationed overseas and living in private housing about utilities and recurring maintenance expenses. Approximately 44 percent of members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community took the survey in 2023 and the feedback caused an increase in utility allotments of 10 percent.

KMC members who receive OHA, live in privately leased housing, and have been stationed in Germany for over 6 months are eligible to take the survey. The results of the survey will have an impact on future utility and OHA rates. The survey is optional and requires approximately 15 minutes to complete and should be done by a service member or a spouse with knowledge on their home expenses. Spending time to accurately take the survey allows the DOD to set equitable OHA rates for service members. the human connection. “So for me, what I got out of this actually the face-to-face aspect, which I think is absolutely key,” said Col. Paul Blakesley, the Great Britain FLO.

The GREATest BRITAIN road trip, Part 4: Lake District, England

Buttermere Lake, part of the Lake District, England.

Story and photo by Leonie Milde contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com As we slowly make our way north, we arrive back in England. In Lake District, to be exact. Otherwise known as Lakelands or just The Lakes and located in the county of Cumbria in the north-west of England, it’s less than a 3-hour drive from Llandudno in Wales. With a population density of only 18 people per square kilometre and 900 square miles of nature, it’s yet another perfect destination to relax and unplug. Trust the 19 million tourists that travel to the park ever year as well as the countless poets and writers that visited the area for inspiration and plan a trip there during your stay in Europe. Since hotels, restaurants and other public establishments rely heavily on the profit from the summer months, the entire area is extremely child- and dog-friendly,

allowing your furry friends to enter many of the hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafés. Check out this list of 25 thing to do in the Lakes with your dog for more ideas. Children will love the area’s connection with Peter Rabbit, since his creator, Beatrix Potter, loved the Lakes and aside from vacationing there all her life, lived, drew and wrote there for years. Her cottage, Hill Top Farm is a museum now and should not be missing on your itinerary. Buttermere A ‘mere’ is basically a lake that’s too shallow to deserve the term. Since Buttermere isn’t open for swimming anyway, we shall treat it as a lake nonetheless since it’s a large body of fresh water and that’s what I think of when I imagine a lake. You can walk around the whole mere in circa 1.5 hours and since it’s a very even path, it’s ideal for children as well. The scenery around the lake is absolutely stunning and very diverse boasting forests, meadows, hills (to look at not to hike),

sheep, cows, waterfalls and a mini beach. The walk is equal parts relaxing and simply beautiful and should 100% be on your itinerary during your time in the Lakes, if only because, and I cannot stress this enough, Syke Farm Tearoom has the best scones. End the walk with a cup of tea and a hot scone or a bowl of soup at Syke Farm Tea Room right next

to the parking spot. Drive back to Keswick via the gorgeous Honister Pass and stop at the Slate Mine Museum for even more highlights in one day. Cat Bells This little mountain had me crying three minutes in but 11-year-olds were overtaking me all the time so it might not have been as hard as I made it. (Yes,

I used my dying breath to ask random children for their age because I couldn’t believe how unfit I actually am..) The steep walk that doesn’t stop being steep until you made it to the top ends with a sweet sweet view that may have even been worth this neardeath experience. Make sure to wear hiking boots for the ground is uneven at times and there is a mini climb involved.

February 9, 2024

Scafell Pike The top of the highest mountain in England can be reached by foot though one should not underestimate the climb that leads to the breathtaking view. It’s tough, steep and rocky. The path starts at a car park in Lake Head. Dogs are welcome but should be used to long, uphill walks. Wray Castle This majestical, Victorian and New Gothical castle built in 1840 unfortunately does not contain any of the original furniture and is packed with changing exhibitions and child-friendly play areas instead. Consider arriving by boat (lake cruises from windermere stop there), bike or foot as the car park fills up quickly during the summer months.

Hill Top Farm, Beatrix Potter’s Cottage Beatrix loved the Lake District after having vacationed there every year as a young girl and woman. Many of her books were inspired and written in her 17th century farm house Hill Top Farm, which is open for visitors yearround. A leaflet will guide you through the small village adjacent to it and point out little spots you

might recognize from your favorite Potter tale. The World of Beatrix Potter Though designed for younger visitors, this exhibition near Windermere is a journey into the enchanted world of Beatrix Potter’s creations. Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle, Mrs Tiggy-winkle, Mr. Jeremy Fisher and all their friends invite you into their colorful caves, homes and dens featuring musical and visual effects. Wordsworth House In 1802, William Wordsworth wandered lonely as a cloud™ and got inspired by a field of Daffodils to write one of the most famous poems in the English language. His birth house can be visit in Cockermouth, only 20 minutes from Keswick. While you’re in the beautiful little town of Cockermouth, don’t miss out on the best hot chocolate I had on my entire trip (and believe me when I say there was a lot of hot chocolate involved). You can find it at a place called “The Moon & Sixpence” on main street, which is conveniently titled Main Street in true small town fashion.

Other famous writers that either stopped by or wrote about the Lakes are John Keats, Lord Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, Percy Shelley and even Ernest Hemingway. The Pencil Museum Granted, the Pencil Museum in Keswick might not be worldrenowned but it is the only one in the world (I think) and especially on a really really rainy day (and there are lots of those in the actual wettest inhabited place of the United Kingdom), it’s an excellent way to pass the hours until the sun returns.

Don’t forget to prepare for wet weather and pack a sufficient supply of raincoats, rain boots and a spare pair of shoes! Where to stay Booking.com is always a safe bet. Airbnb offers fantastic little cottages for surprisingly low prices that will have you waking up to miles and miles of rural happiness. The Youth Hostel Association, YHA, has a series of hostels, dorm and private rooms, all over the Lakes. If you’re traveling with your pet, you might want to check out Canine Cottages for extra dog-friendly accommodations.

Leonie at Lake Buttermere.

Windermere Stop by Windermere, the largest lake in the district, on a sunny day and take a boat tour to see the scenery from a new perspective. You can hop on and off at different stops so you can take a few hours to go for a swim or relax in the sun before cruising back to where you parked your car.

Wildlife Unfortunately I am not a wildlife expert but if you are or wish to be, the Lakes are, again, the place for you. Red squirrels can be found in comparatively large quantities here and since they are getting rarer by the minute, it’s important to drive carefully and be on the lookout at all times. Other highlights include golden eagles, fish and birds I know nothing about but hear are very special and the incomparable Herdy Sheep, a breed indigenous to the park. The babies are born black and while their wool turns white during their lives, it gets grey again once they grow older, which always makes them look like judgmental old ladies.

There will be curling events every Monday evening, interactive shows for children on Sundays and a Kinderfasching event on Feb. 13. Hot drinks, crepes and other snacks will be served in the adjacent “winter barn”, with free parking at Messeplatz and you can rent skates. Get active, turn a few pirouettes and join in the icy fun! Konstanze Licht and Marc Kienle are starting a new series of concerts in the Stiftskirche. They will perform pieces on the harp and trumpet when the Gothic church will only be illuminated by candles. There will be works from Baroque to pop in a unique atmosphere. Tickets will be sold at the door, but a reservation at city-kirche@web.de or Tel. 0160-4409129 is recommended due to space limitations. EXHIBITION “IC Y ETERNITY” FEB. 11 – MARCH 31, 2 – 5 P.M., MUSEUM IM WESTRICH, RAMSTEIN

The Museum im Westrich is showing its new special exhibition with the German title “Eisige Ewigkeit?

— Die Vergänglichkeit und Schönheit von Eis und Schnee“ (English translation: “Icy Eternity? — The transience and beauty of ice and snow”). Helene and Thomas Hoffmann both have a lot of experience in the polar regions. They deal with ice and snow on many levels, both professionally and privately. They are now showing some of their works in the Museum in Westrich. This exhibition is dedicated to showcasing preserved snow and ice samples from the polar regions. It is intended to inspire wonder and to share enthusiasm, but also to reflect on the fragility of our planet. The exhibition also highlights the Neumayer station(s) in Antarctica and its Palatinate namesake, the geophysicist and polar explorer Georg von Neumayer (1826-1909). The exhibition can be visited throughout the regular opening hours of the museum which are Wednesday and Sunday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free! FADO-REISE, KONZERT AUSSER DER REIHE MARCH 1, 7.30 P.M., FRUCHTHALLE, KAISERSLAUTERN

Sina Nossa will present their new album Concreta Utopia. New creative jewels that just want to be heard and felt. Weltschmerz and melancholy of traditional Fado music meet jazz, pop and folklore. Fans of Fado music from Portugal wouldn’t want to miss this concert evening with stylish facettes, rhythms and themes. Tickets: http://www.eventim.de/ VIVE LA FRANCE, SUNDAYS AT FIVE MARCH 3, 5 P.M., FRUCHTHALLE, KAISERSLAUTERN

“Live like god in France”, this saying usually refers to culinary delights of the French cuisine. But, our neighbor country also has a lot to offer when it comes to music, such as delicious opera melodies from composers such as Jules Massenet, Leo Delibes or dance rhythms that bubble like champagne by Jacques Offenbach. The Pfalzphilharmonie Kaiserslautern, solo artists and the choir of the Pfalztheater will take their audience on a trip though “delicious” France. Tickets: http://www.eventim.de/ FEUERENGEL - A TRIBUTE TO RAMMSTEIN MARCH 9, 7 P.M., CONGRESS CENTER, RAMSTEIN

There are many cover bands, but not that many tribute band. Only Feuerengel can do what others can’t; pay tribute in a highly professional way, no doubt about it. Feuerengel has committed itself to exactly imitating its original Rammstein with flamethrowers and showers of sparks. The sound, lightshow and stage can be confusingly similar and the six full-blood musicians can almost be mistaken for the original band members. Tickets: https://congresscenterramstein.reservix.de/

ABC IN KMC: Eleven Graphic by Alex Oakenman/Shutterstock.com

Eleven is the magic number when it comes to Karneval, also known as Fasching or Fastnacht. The eleventh day of the eleventh month, the eleventh hour and eleventh minute of the year mark the beginning of the “fifth season” as Germans and fans of the colorful and crazy festivities tend to say. You may ask yourself, what is this crazy season all about when grown people walk around in outrageous costumes, singing silly nonsense songs and living it up? Women storming city halls, stealing the keys and cutting off men’s ties. Children turning into cowboys, princesses, or clowns. Fasching events, such as dances, lengthy silly meetings with a council of eleven sitting on the stage with magnificent Fasching hats and a festive princess (or even prince), colorful parades with floats depicting and making fun of prominent politicians, and (some) fans of the season completely out of bounds for a whole weekend. What are the origins and history of the season? The historical origin of Karneval is rather

obscure. It may have its roots in a primitive festival honoring the beginning of the new year and rebirth of nature. It could just as well be linked to the beginnings of carnival in Italy, where the city of Venice is famed for its celebrations when wealthy and less fortunate wore elaborate masks and mingled during the season, otherwise unheard of. The pagan Saturnalian festival of ancient Rome (celebrated in February or early March) may have also played a significant role in the development of the tradition. Karneval in Germany was noted as early as the 13th century and became very popular to allow commoners to mock the monarchy and politicians without fear of retribution, but then really took off in the 19th and 20th centuries. Therefore, many “official” Karneval costumes copy some of those old uniforms and dresses. Generally speaking, the season is more popular in Catholic dominated areas such as in southern Germany, the southwest and west areas along the Dutch and Belgian borders. Fasching is always celebrated just before the fasting season of Lent, which is when many people forsake food as a sacrifice for religious reasons. Therefore, Fasching is the time to indulge, celebrate, and embrace all that is good before things are out of bounds during Lent. Cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz have elaborate parades with bands,

dance groups and hand-made floats on Rose Monday. In Baden-Württemberg there is a special type of Karneval called “Fasnet” where participants will wear spooky and very creepy looking masks and dress up as witches pounding on drums, traditionally intended to scare off any winter spirits and bring about spring. The highlights of the season: This year Thursday Feb. 8, known as “Altweiberfasching” (old wives) was when women took over power in the city halls and celebrated lively parties in the evening, and cut ties. The upcoming weekend goes into full swing when dances and other social events take place, always starting eleven minutes after the hour, while on Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) there are parades around the country. Although it is not considered a public holiday, many Fasching lovers take off from work and dive into the festivities. In some regions, smaller shops or offices may be closed for the day.

Faschingsdienstag, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is another day of celebration, and the largest parade in the region takes place in Ramstein-Miesenbach, this year on Feb. 13, starting at 2 p.m., often with Kaiserslautern Military Community group engagement along with local German and French participants. Also watch for social media posts regarding road blocks and detours that afternoon. The concept of Karneval has spread throughout the world with Samba competitions in Brazil, colorful festivities in the Caribbean and famous Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This year, Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday) is Feb. 14, the beginning of Lent and a halt for all fun. Well maybe not, it is after all, Valentine’s Day, and meant to spoil your loved ones.

The primary objective of the event was to develop a shared understanding of alliance partner capabilities in the European theater. Participants discussed themes of interop and partnership, with a focus on opportunities to mutually execute initiatives promoting these objectives. Maj. Gen. How to prevent gum disease by Capt. Nathan Proulx 86th Dental Squadron Gingivitis is the term used for inflamed gums, usually resulting in red and puffy gums that may bleed when brushing and flossing. It is important to identify and treat gingivitis, because it can lead to gum disease and bone loss! Inflammation, such as gingivitis, is the body’s normal response to irritation or injury. Gingivitis is often caused by the presence of dental plaque — that whitish gunk on the surface of teeth before brushing them. Dental plaque can harden over time and turn into tartar, also known as calculus. Tartar can only be removed by the dentist, so it’s very important to remove plaque before it has the chance to become tartar. Unlike gum disease that comes later, gingivitis is a reversible condition. By removing the source of inflammation, the gums can heal completely. This is the reason why brushing and flossing your teeth is important as a part of everyone’s oral hygiene. Although there are many ways to brush your teeth, proper brushing starts with using the

right equipment. Electric toothbrushes work well and are the easiest to use, although a manual can work just as well with the correct technique. The brand of toothbrush also doesn’t make much of a difference. The most important consideration when selecting the size and shape of a toothbrush is to find one that you are comfortable using. Soft bristle brushes work best because they have the flexibility to reach under the gums. Harder bristles can sometimes cause damage to the teeth by wearing them down. The recommended method is to hold the brush at a 45-degree angle where the gums and teeth meet. This allows the bristles to reach under the gums. Run the toothbrush back and forth along the gumline of each tooth — both the cheek and lips side and then tongue side. Brush the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. To clean the inside surface of the front teeth, hold the brush vertically and use an up and down motion to clean the area. Do this twice a day, for two minutes each session by breaking up the upper right, upper left, lower left, and lower right into 30-second increments.

Switch out toothbrushes for a new one every three months. Proper brushing only gets you 60 percent of the way to clean, healthy teeth. The remaining 40 percent is through flossing. It is important to floss once every day to clean plaque off in between the teeth. The type and brand of floss doesn’t matter as long as it’s a floss you like and will use. When flossing, start by taking a piece and wrapping it a few times around one finger on each hand and see-saw it toward the gums and past the point where two teeth are touching. Wrap the floss toward one side of the tooth so the floss makes a “C” shape around it. Run the floss up and down the side of the tooth five times, then wrap the floss around the other tooth and do the same thing. Repeat this process for every spot where two teeth touch. If an area can’t be flossed, like a bridge or braces, thread the floss with a threader through to the other side and floss that way. Alternatively, some people prefer using proxy brushes or water picks in lieu of floss for these areas. Long-handled reach flossers can also be used as a replacement for using floss on their fingers.

16th Sustainment Brigade’s MLK ceremony

U.S. Army Col. Matthew Alexander, commander, 16th Sustainment Brigade, introduces the guest speaker U.S. Army Capt. Chaplain Tammy Briggs, during the MLK ceremony at Baumholder, Jan. 30.

“Every new generation of Soldiers have to be reminded why we changed the laws in the Army. The Civil Rights Acts of 1964 changed the Army. The killing of George Floyd in 2020 set in motion monumental changes in our Department of the Defense and the U.S. Army. Every generation needs to understand that we all have a responsibility to push the dream. Why? Because the dream has become the American way of life. We expect to be respected. Expect to be included. We expect to be accepted. When you see discrimination surfacing say something. When you see disparities and inequities who gets promoted and who gets certain jobs, say something. When you see the lack of dignity and respect directed at a Soldier, say something. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. So if you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you by all means KEEP MOVING,” said U.S. Army Maj. David Derienzo, 16th Sustainment Brigade, Brigade Chaplain, gives the Invocation during the MLK ceremony at guest speaker Chaplain U.S. Army Capt. Tammy Briggs during the MLK ceremony at Baumholder, Jan. 30. Baumholder, Jan. 30.

3) Don’t wait until the last minute to make a reservation Restaurants can get pretty packed during special events like Valentine’s Day, so

call or stop by to make a reservation for your special night. Alternately, you can just get takeout and get cozy on the couch with a movie and your loved one. If you need inspiration, find a great restaurant near you using the Find-It Guide’s business finder. 4) Take a romantic walk It’s not for nothing that Germany has the Romantic Road and a plethora of Romantic Walks. Head to your local pedestrian streets of the closest town or city and wander around, hand in hand. Or pick out a proper hiking route or stroll along a river. There are endless walking oppor-

tunities in Germany, which mean endless opportunities for a little alone time with your loved one! 5) Take to the road When you need to get out of the daily ground — and especially if you need some one-on-one time with someone — there’s nothing like a road trip. If you don’t have a destination in mind, just jump in the car and drive. Get a little lost. Stop in some cute town for dinner or to shop. Plan a day trip. Maybe there’s a place you’ve driven past a hundred times but never went into? Take this day to discover something new.

2) Pick up a bottle of German wine Head to your local grocery or beverage shop and pick up some German wine (or beer, if that’s what your sweetheart prefers) to celebrate Valentine’s in Germany. Remember: Germany has some of the best wine-growing regions in the world. And, again, the prices will floor you compared to those in the U.S. Plus, sharing a good wine is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day in European style! Pro tip: Pair this with tip six (below) and plan a trip to the vineyard your wine is from.

7) Find an event to attend Speaking of events, Germany is loaded with them, during all seasons. Think about concerts, plays, cooking classes, whisky tastings, dance classes, esport events, football matches…the possibilities are almost endless. There is something out there that will light your fire. Sometimes it just takes a little effort to find it!

1) Visit your local florist Stock up on gorgeous flowers for your sweet or treat yourself! The flowers are incredibly fresh and well priced, especially compared to most stateside prices. If you’d rather have them delivered, try fleurop. de, who work with local florists and offer same-day delivery.

Fortunately, you’re living in a country that can help you do romance right. Here are seven great tips for celebrating Valentine’s Day while you’re living in Germany!

6) Have a romantic dinner…and dream about the future There is something about good food, good wine (or beer), and good company that makes anything seem possible. This Valentine’s Day, take time to dream with your loved one. Sit down to dinner, or grab a booth in a romantic cafe, and plan a future trip or surprise your sweetheart with a gift of tickets for an upcoming concert or event.
