Ramstein welcomes 3rd Air Force commander

The annual tree lighting is a chance for leaders from both Ramstein Air Base and the town of Ramstein-Miesenbach to affirm the ever-growing partnership between the two communities, said Capt.

Matthew Streett, 86th Airlift Wing chaplain.

“We are one community, Americans and Germans, who value each other,” Streett said. “Through our presence here, through our role in NATO and through a shared vision of freedom, justice and security, we can only complement each other by continuing to strengthen what’s already strong.”

The five-day event hosted security cooperation leaders from the Department of Defense, Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development and other personnel.

The purpose of the annual gathering of leaders was to synchronize their efforts to build defense capabilities, respond to crisis, and deter and defeat transnational threats and promote regional security, stability and prosperity.

“The RSWG is part of AFRICOM’s annual development cycle and is a key milestone in our planning process,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Falvo, AFRICOM spokesperson. “It helps drive updates to AFRICOM’s theater campaign plan and country cooperation plans, which serve as the ‘blueprints’ for our Security Force Assistance efforts with our international partners.”

With four months under his belt as the AFRICOM commander, Waldhauser spoke of his plan to continue with the current strategy for the next year, then work on adjusting it over the following year. He emphasized the importance of rethinking the meaning of the phrase “long term.”

“We have to shift our thinking beyond a fiscal year or a tour or even an administration,” Falvo said. “In other words, we need to align our efforts with other partner nations, with our diplomatic and development colleagues and with the objectives of our African partner nations across multiple administrations. If we don’t, then we risk applying our resources in an unfocused way.”

AFRICOM plays an important role in stabilizing the continent, and the symposium is a key aspect of that effort.

“The RSWG is an important part of our effort — along with our diplomatic, defense and development partners — to help build African institutions capable of deterring the spread of extremism, protecting their populations, enabling economic prosperity and expanding the rule of law and human rights,” Falvo said.

The RSWG symposium concluded Nov. 18.

Santa Claus visited the crowd to pass out candy to children. However, instead of coming in with a sleigh and nine reindeer, he arrived in a shiny red firetruck.

Shortly afterward, the crowd made their way to the officers’ club for warm drinks and snacks.

The tree represents the solidarity and symbiotic relationship between the two communities, said Streett.

“It’s a living, growing thing, and it will slowly grow

stronger if you actively care for it,” Streett said. “Our local bond with the German people is a vital one, and it’s strengthened every day by thousands of positive interactions that our forces have with their German landlords, co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances.”

Just like the tree, Streett hopes the partnership between the two Ramstein communities will continue to grow and flourish for many more years to come.

Tree cutting near high school

The State Forest Department has begun to conduct tree cutting at the edge of the forest along the Ramstein High School parking lot and West Virginia Lane. Tree cutting

will be conducted in four phases and take until spring 2017. The jogging path will be impacted and the parking lot will be partially closed.

Speakers association meets

Ramstein Toastmasters will meet from noon to 1 p.m. every first, second and third Tuesday of the month at Ramstein South Chapel, Bldg. 2403. Individuals who want to develop their public speaking skills are welcome to visit the meetings free of charge. Participants can prepare for board interviews, promotional ceremonies or leadership roles. Public speaking skills or aspirations can be advanced and enhanced. Polizei conduct controls

During the holiday season, German Polizei will be conducting an increased number of traffic controls and DUI checks. They recommend that those drinking alcohol at Christmas parties or enjoying gluehwein at Christmas markets should use public transportation or call a taxi for their own and others’ safety. In 2015 during this season, 179 actions had to be taken in the Kaiserslautern area because motorists were intoxicated.

Sixty-three of them had to face a criminal charge, and there were 58 preliminary proceedings due to drug consumption.

Christmas trees to cut

Some forestry offices offer special tree cutting dates. The Donnersberg Forestry Office scheduled two events: 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at 67722 Hoeringen,

The Kaiserslautern Forestry Office will offer tree cutting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Food and beverages will be served at each event. Customers are asked to bring a handsaw or ax. Forest office employees will pack the trees in nets for proper transportation.

A tree selling event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 18 in Landstuhl’s Breitenwald, near the U.S. radar station on county road L470. Customers can choose freshly cut trees from the Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern forest areas.

Cycling with soul: USO hosts indoor exercise program

The class, temporarily built in the gym for two days, challenged participants to push themselves to their limits.

One of the people who helped host the event, Steve Lowe, 86th Force Support Squadron fitness center manager, said the class brought something different to the active community.

“People like to try different things at both fitness centers here on base,” Lowe said. “Spinning happens to be one of the most popular exercises, I’ve noticed. I hope that getting SoulCycle enhances the community’s drive to try more

activities and classes here.”

Hundreds of KMC members attended the hour-long class. SoulCycle, an American fitness company, offers mood lighting, a cadre of support staff to help its participants throughout the class and musical beats to choreographed cycling moves.

One member who signed up for the class was Meaghan Wynn, 86 FSS visual information specialist.

The course brings camaraderie and morale to the community, she said.

“I went there, and I felt it was an awesome time,” Wynn said. “In the classes, there are 75 strangers in a small, cramped space, but by the time the music is fading and the sweat is wiped off, everybody is high-fiving each other. The time goes by so fast because you’re so concentrated and motivated by the people around you.

It says a lot about the community here!”

has teamed up with the USO to provide new tastes of entertainment and fitness for the community

86th Operations Support Squadron sticks landing

by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ensuring a safe flight in bad weather can be challenging, but having a reliable air traffic control and landing systems team can make sticking the landing much smoother.

The 86th Operations Support Squadron ATCALS flight maintains dozens of air traffic control radio antennas across the base, furthering the mission to generate and employ airpower around the globe.

Maintaining equipment is a huge part of the job. Their maintenance includes Instrument Landing Systems on multiple runways, the tactical air navigation system and many air-toground radios.

“They are the key enablers of the

strategic power projection platform for United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa,” said Lt. Col. Jason Shephard, 86 OSS commander.

“They monitor, repair and maintain all air traffic, landing, radio and weather systems. And (climbing antennas) is how they will have to repair, if needed, an important component to keep these systems operational.”

The ATCALS flight checks all the Instrument Landing Systems parameters regularly to ensure the antenna towers and monitors are performing correctly. Necessary adjustments are made to keep the airfield open and the ILS in compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration and International Civil Aviation Organization standards. These checks include performing visual inspection of the navigational aids and perform-

ing on-the-ground measurements.

“When most people at Ramstein are at home for the night getting ready for bed, our mission is just starting,” said Tech. Sgt. Richard Biggins, 86 OSS airfield systems NCO in charge. “No matter the weather, we are working through the night to ensure that the ATCALS at Ramstein are ready for use.”

Ramstein has the only category III runway in the command and the only military maintained CAT III in the Air Force. This system means the runway is a zero-visibility auto-land system that requires additional checks to verify the system is performing as required. To check the system, the ATCALS flight uses a specially built test vehicle to drive the length of the runway multiple times with an antenna 12 meters in height to simu-

late an aircraft and ensure the signals are being brought directly down the centerline.

“With the 86th OSS’s hard work, aircraft can still safely operate in and out of Ramstein with low visibility,” Shephard said.

The talented Airmen in the ATCALS flight play a key role in keeping the airfield open and working, taking part in any aircraft that lands, takes off or crosses Ramstein’s airspace.

“The ATCALS team exemplifies the very best of the 86th Operations Group,” said Col. Gerald Donohue, 86th Operations Group commander.

“As we approach winter, it’s inspiring to know that these Airmen will enthusiastically climb towers in snow and ice to return our systems to service. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Maintaining fitness goals with Ramstein classes

by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Whether it’s bulking up or trimming down, reaching fitness goals requires dedication and motivation. When it comes to fitness, the 786th Force Support Squadron can assist through their motivating fitness classes and programs.

Ramstein is home to the Northside and Southside fitness centers. Both centers offer a variety of car-

dio equipment, free weights, racquetball courts, fitness classes and active intramural programs. Both centers also offer parent and child workout rooms.

Staying true to one’s goal is a matter of motivation, and people find it in many different ways. One Airman that works at the Southside Fitness Center, Senior Airman Emily Sharp, 786 FSS special events and programs representative, believes classes can help people find that inspiration to improve their health.

“Working out in a group

helps motivate people to push themselves,” Sharp said.

“Personally, I’m a very competitive person. I’ve taken every class available, and I love them all.”

Instructors for these classes help ensure participants don’t feel isolated, which creates an environment for everyone to stay involved.

“The instructors are very motivating, and the classes become more energetic and fun as a result,” Sharp said.

Although challenging, the classes are a fun and inspiring way for people to either main-

tain fitness or elevate their level of physical ability, said Andrea Brooks, Southside Fitness Center class instructor.

“People come by, and all they need is a little motivation to get into a rhythm,” Brooks said. “I’m very happy to help people start their year off well. The more people I see, the more opportunities there are to make a difference in the community.”

From indoor cycling to yoga, these sessions provide a variety of entry-level opportunities for people to not only become more active but also maintain a higher level of physical fitness. With the help of a highly qualified staff, the 786 FSS is able to keep Airmen and their families in shape and fit to fight. For Team Ramstein, that’s a New Year’s resolution worth fighting for.

569 USFPS: New data advises security measures through holiday season

by Senior Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs While living in Germany, individuals have direct access to travel to many different countries and enjoy the vast cultures of the world. Imagine going on vacation and coming home to the realization that your house was raided, personal possessions are gone and your sense of security is lost.

Vehicle theft and burglaries not only affect the individuals involved; they

impact the Air Force mission by diminishing morale and taking time away from the work place.

The 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron has consolidated data from 2013 to the present, which shows the trends of theft frequency. Specifically during this time of the year, the rate of thefts rise from November to December.

This time of the year is about giving and being thankful. For many children, running down the stairs on a cold December morning to unwrap gifts can be a memorable event. What

if this year, instead of it being about giving, someone decided it was about taking those gifts?

Though there are months throughout the year that show more reported thefts, more importantly, it’s about crimes of opportunity, said Staff Sgt. Brian Garcia, 569 USFPS NCO in charge of reports and analysis.

“We should always be taking measures to keep ourselves and our belongings safe,” said Garcia.

“There is an increase of theft during the holidays, but that doesn’t take away from the importance of

security year-round.”

Master Sgt. Thomas Seamans, 569 USFPS NCO in charge of plans and programs, said there are steps that can be taken to help prevent becoming part of the statistic.

“In Germany, most residential front doors automatically lock when they’re closed,” Seamans said.

“Some people may not realize the importance of double locking their doors. Putting the key in and physically locking the door works as a deadbolt and provides an extra level of security.

Another thing we can’t stress enough is not leaving valuables in plain sight, whether that’s in your house or vehicle.”

While away from home, setting house lights on a timer, asking a neighbor to shovel the snow in the driveway and preventing mail from piling up are other ways to help deter perpetrators.

Frequency of unsecured vehicle break-ins has

increased, versus secured vehicles. Locking all doors and keeping all windows closed are just two steps that can be taken to help prevent members of the KMC from becoming victims of vehicle theft.

Maybe this year is the time to get that new family car or convertible you’ve been saving up for. Don’t leave any visible valuables and keep those doors locked to decrease the likelihood of becoming a subject of interest.

Seamans said that though Americans are not specifically being targeted, it does take time and money away from the mission and the individuals. By implementing preventative methods beforehand, military members and their families can enjoy the holiday season with one less stressor.

MORÓN AIR BASE, Spain — Morón Air Base is located in the Andalusia region of Spain, surrounded by olive groves and sunflower fields. It is home to the 221st Escuadron and Wing 11 of the Spanish air force, U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s 496th Air Base Squadron and Air Mobility Command’s 725th Air Mobility Squadron Detachment 1. The primary mission of the 496 ABS and Det. 1 is to support the needs of the U.S. Air Force, projecting rapid global mobility and combat airpower within Europe and Southwest Asia as well as Africa.

One of the biggest responsibilities that the 496 ABS and Det. 1 share each year is the Coronet mission. This mission occurs semiannually and supports a major Air Expeditionary Force fighter aircraft swap-out between the U.S. and the Middle East. In short, twice a year, these major swap-outs mean fighters fly from the continental U.S. into Morón, where the aircraft receive necessary repairs and fuel and the crews rest and prepare for a deployment into the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Once there, they relieve fighter units that have completed a six-month deployment.

These redeploying units then make their journey home via Morón.

Morón is currently three-quarters of the way through supporting such a fighter rotation. This particular

This mission will last almost 60 days and is a major Air Expeditionary Force fighter aircraft swap-out between the U.S. and the Middle East.

Coronet mission will last almost 60 days and was preceded by countless hours of preparation and planning.

Once underway, the work is routine and the process flows smoothly most days. But on one particular day two weeks ago, that was certainly not the case. Instead of the typical forecast of sunshine and reasonable temperatures, Morón was facing a forecast of thunderstorms and wind. Even if Morón had the best of weather, Team Morón still had a difficult mission that day: the launch-

ing of 19 aerial refueling tanker and fighter aircraft within one hour.

Despite the less-than-favorable weather, they pushed through and readied 14 F-15 Strike Eagle, three KC-135 Stratotanker and two KC-10 Extender aircraft for departure. To pull this off, the 496 ABS’ fuels personnel first had to top off these 19 aircraft with a total of 548,000 pounds of jet fuel, equivalent to 100,000 gallons. ated equipment were delivered to their aircraft in time to perform preflight checks.

As soon as the first F-15 broke the straight line that once defined the formation of 14 fighters atop the parking apron, the rain and wind intensified. Even in the face of this obstacle, the mix of Airmen from Air Combat Command, AMC and USAFE pressed on to accomplish their particular tasks. Despite the less-than-optimal conditions, the team stood its ground against the cold, wind and rain and darted to and from aircraft, pulling chalks, relocating fire extinguishers and synchronizing the block-out and ultimate on-time launch of all 19 aircraft. All in all, they collectively performed their respective roles flawlessly and crushed it.

Before this Coronet rotation is over, the Airmen at Morón Air Base will support many more deploying and redeploying fighters and tankers. When all is said and done, an impressive 2.5 million pounds of fuel will have been delivered by AMC’s aerial refueling aircraft to over 150 deploying and redeploying fighters, and the team of Airmen supporting this operation — having come together from multiple bases across Europe and the U.S. — will have demonstrated why the American Airmen make the U.S. Air Force the best in the world.

‘Silent Night’: World’s most popular Christmas song

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs During Advent season, the world’s most popular Christmas song “Silent Night” can be heard all over the world in all languages.

The song originated in Austria. On the afternoon of Christmas Eve 1818, the priest of St. Nikolaus Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg, Joseph Mohr, tried to play the organ. He was very desperate because there was only a scratching sound coming out of the instrument. The church and the organ were damaged by high waters of the Salzach River.

For Mohr, a Christmas celebration without music was impossible, so he gave the text of a poem he wrote in 1816 to his friend and local teacher Franz Xaver Gruber and asked him to compose a melody for it. He chose this poem because it was in German and easy to understand for the local population, who mainly were seamen on the Salzach River. During the priest’s time, the church liturgy was mainly in Latin, not to be understood by those poor people.

Just in time for the midnight service, Gruber presented Mohr an easy melody for two soloists with choir and guitar accompaniment.

The local people liked the “Stille Nacht” song performed by the priest singing tenor and playing the guitar, and the teacher singing bass.

In fall of the following year, Mohr left Oberndorf to be stationed in another town in the state of Salzburg. The new Christmas song was forgotten. But in 1824, when the organ needed repair work again, the organ builder found the text and notes of “Stille Nacht” in the choir loft. He asked Gruber for a copy to take with him on his trips. This way, many musicians from Tyrol, who were traveling throughout Europe, included the song in their repertory.

In 1832, a publisher from Leipzig printed “Stille Nacht” for the first time, but the names of Mohr and Gruber were not mentioned.

They never knew what a success their song, even in America, was.

Joseph Mohr, the priest, died at the age of 55 as a poor man.

Many years later, a controversy about the authorship of the original version was set aside.

Today, a monument of Joseph Mohr in Oberndorf honors his work.

To date the Christmas song “Stille Nacht” has been translated to about 300 languages and dialects.

Due to bad damages by high waters, St. Nicholas Church had to be torn down between 1906 and 1913. In the first half of the 20th century, the village of Oberndorf was placed about 800 meters upstream to secured, high-water areas, and a new church was built.

Between 1924 and 1937, a Silent Night Memorial Chapel was erected on the grounds of the former church. About 150,000 persons from throughout the world visit the chapel each year.

In 2011, the Austrian UNESCO commission added the song to the national list of intangible cultural heritage and recommended it for the general list of international UNESCO cultural heritage.

TODAY:

Bacon Parsley Schmarren (pancakes)

Ingredients (for 4 people)

6 medium size eggs 2 cups flour 2 cups milk Salt and ground white pepper to taste ½ cup parsley, chopped 8 slices thin cut bacon 1 cup shredded mountain cheese or bergkaese 1 tablespoon butter 4 tablespoons oil Separate the eggs. Mix the egg yolks with milk and flour, add salt and pepper and chopped parsley. Mix into a dough and let it set for 15 minutes.

In a pan, cook the bacon until it is crispy on medium heat. Let it cool on a paper towel so that all the grease is absorbed.

Beat the egg whites with salt until they are stiff. Add the egg whites to the dough,

one spoon at a time, gently folding each spoon into the mixture. Add the cheese, one spoonful at a time. Gently fold in again.

Divide 2/3s of butter into two ovenproof pans. Put 2 tablespoons of oil in each pan. Divide the dough between the two pans. Let dough sit in pan on medium heat for 2 minutes. Preheat oven to 180 degrees. After two minutes of cooking pancake on the stove, put each slightly runny pancake with the pan into the oven on the middle rack. Leave in oven for 10-15 minutes until it is nicely brown on top. Take out of oven and tear into bite size pieces. Divide the remaining butter into both pans. Put pancakes back on stove at medium until all pieces are nicely brown. This should take about 2 minutes. Remove. Place on a plate and top with bacon slices. A nice side dish is lambs lettuce salad.

Approximately 56,000 American citizens live in and around the region of Kaiserslautern. One of the first stops for the new arrivals is the USO. For 75 years, the non-profit organization has been supporting American military members and their families throughout the world. The USO could not fulfill its mission without the support of many generous sponsors and volunteers.

One of the USO’s many mis-

sions is to ease the military members’ start in a new environment by bringing them closer to their respective host nations, thereby promoting mutual understanding.

A very special program is available for American military and family members in and around Kaiserslautern.

Together with the Marketing Association “Kaiser in Lautern,” the USO executes weekly city tours. A USO escort accompanies newly arrived guests on a tour through Kaiserslautern, introducing them to important institutions and sights as well as businesses and services.

In addition, once a month, the USO offers orientation tours under the motto “Willkommen in Kaiserslautern,” during which the highlights of the region are featured. These include such things as visits to the Garden Show and a tour through the underground tunnels of the former Casimir Palace, as well as outings to the most important events like Swinging Lautern, KL — Classics, the Lauterer carnival and the Christmas market. A visit to the weekly market is also a rewarding destination.

Several institutions support

the USO with a financial contribution toward transportation and entrance fees and shopping bags.

Through their support, the businesses and institutions want to show their hospitality and encourage the Americans to make regular visits to the city of Kaiserslautern.

The following businesses participated in this cooperation: SWK Municipal Works Kaiserslautern, Kreissparkasse Kaiserslautern, ECE- K in Lautern, the marketing association Kaiser in Lautern, City Management of the City of Kaiserslautern, Tourist Information, as well as the Gartenschau Kaiserslautern — iKL-Gemeinnuetzige Intergrationsgesellschaft — and Vicari busses.

In retrospect, in 2015, the USO organized 62 city and orientation tours, during which more than 2,000 American military and family members could be welcomed in the city of Kaiserslautern.

Similar results are expected for 2016.

While USO will stop trips to other cities and countries by the end of the year, through the general support of Kaiserslautern’s businesses and institutions, this special program and opportunity will continue.

Motorists must obey signs Motorists coming to the corner of Koenigstrasse and Richard-Wagner-Strasse in the center of Kaiserslautern are not allowed to drive on into Fruchthallstrasse. They must obey the signs in yellow and not enter Fruchthallstrasse along the mall.

Traffic controls conducted by Police Inspection Kaiserslautern 2 proved that numerous Americans unlawfully drive through Fruchthallstrasse. It was noted that in most cases motorists were misrouted by their navigation systems or lacked knowledge of the area. The traffic signs placed at the beginning of Fruchthallstrasse clearly show that driving through is only authorized for city busses, taxis and delivery vehicles.

Christmas item production dates back to 17th century

All over German Christmas markets, shoppers will find unique wooden items such as nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids, angels and other figures. The origin of these holiday items dates back to the 17th century in the Erzgebirge, a mountain area near the Czech border.

After ore became scarce, many miners were forced to do something else — so they began turning every day items into little toy figures for their children, which eventually led to an entire new industry. The miners created different figures as an artistic expression of their interests and political concerns. One of the first items created was the wooden figure of a miner smoking his pipe called “Raeuchermaennchen,” smoking man.

To express their longing for daylight after working years in the mountain, the miners also produced light angels. With the creation of mean-looking nutcrackers, they intended to insult the magistracy or government. Former miners also produced wooden policemen, foresters, soldiers and high authorities with scowling faces — that was their way of insulting the government and showing them that they were treating the miners unjustly.

In 1699, a wood craftsman from the town of Seiffen, which is located in the Erzgebirge, transported his homemade products on a wheelbarrow to the fair in Leipzig. Commercial relations were established, especially with the town of Nuremberg. That’s how the manufacturing of these unique toys started.

Since the standard of living was quite low in the Erzgebirge, the products were sold at cheap prices and thus faced little competition.

Eventually, the former ore-mining town of Seiffen turned into the European center of toy production with exports to the United States starting in 1784. The most popular item that was exported to the states was “Noah’s ark.”

The little animals were made with a special technique — wheel turning. Craftsmen prepared wooden wheels and cut the figures out, a technique still alive today in Seiffen, the town of toys.

production of miniature toy figures became more and more popular. By 1890, customs were charged according to weight and not to the value of the products in exporting to other countries. This made it more expensive to export big toys. At the same time, wood prices increased.

Nowadays, the Erzgebirge region is well known for traditional Christmas symbols — miners carrying lights, angels, nutcrackers, nativity scenes, Christmas pyramids and wooden arches.

The mining, longing for light, joy of celebrating Christmas and the love of the miners for their children were the predominant reasons for this specific type of toy production.

The Seiffen toy museum in the center of town, Hauptstrassse 73, displays all kinds of wooden toys that were produced throughout the centuries. A special exhibition called “Holy Night” presents nativity scenes from three centuries through March 15. Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum will close at 1 p.m.
