Beginning at 3 p.m., a shuttle bus will be available to bring people from Ramstein’s North Chapel parking lot to the show.

The annual Holiday Tour, a j oint venture between the USO and the Chairman of the J oint Chiefs of Staff, provides U.S. military personnel and their families with free entertainment and shows while as i i erica s i est ra i i itary cer a chance to interact with service members directly.

On Nov. 18, Ramstein welcomed an E-3A Sentry airborne warning and control system aircraft assigned to the E-3A Component at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany, and its crew for a visit.

The trip was initiated due to the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force’s organiz ational restructure, which is scheduled to transfer operational control of the E-3A Component to NATO Allied Air Command in fall 2016.

How do you define success?

COMMENTARY

by Lt. Col. Sean Finnan 86th Operations Support Squadron I read the book “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek a couple years ago. His thoughts on achievement vs. success particularly resonated with me.

When talking about our careers, we often ask each other, “What do you want to be? ” or “What do you want to do? ” Although those are good q uestions, I believe the better q uestion is, “How do y e e s ccess t e e it r y r eers e e it r t e ir F rce syste e es it, b t y e e s ccess t ca be a i c t q uestion to answer.

According to Sinek, the key to answering this q uestion is understanding the difference between achievement and success. We often confuse the two or use them interchangeably. But they are different, and their difference matters.

“Achievement is something you reach or attain, like a goal. It is something tanib e, c ear y e e a eas rab e, Sinek says.

Achievement is what we do.

Evelyn made note of the opportunity the E-3A Component provides in

We all want achievement. Achievement is the result of doing well. However, it is different than success. Success is i c t t eas re t is t ta ib e, because it is a sense; it is a belief, an ideal, a set of values or principles.

According to Sinek, success “is a feeling or a state of being.”

Achievement is what we do. Success is why we do it. t et c se , r ac ie ements are hugely important. What we do matters. Absolutely, be proud of what we do. However, Sinek says that “success comes when we wake up every day in that never-ending pursuit of why we do what we do.”

“Those who never lose sight of why, no matter how little or how much they achieve, can inspire us. Those with the ability to never lose sight of why and also achieve the milestones that keep everyone focused in the right direction are the great leaders,” Sinek says.

Great leaders “are in pursuit of why, they hold themselves accountable to how they do it, and what they do serves as the tangible proof of what they believe,” according to Sinek.

86th MDG welcomes winter with new clinic Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In order to better provide care for patients this winter, the 86th Medical Group opened the new Cold and Allergy Clinic inside the Family Health Clinic recently on Ramstein.

This new clinic is open from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and is available for patients 12 to 65 years old.

During the winter and spring seasons, the 86th MDG sees an increased volume of patients suffering from cough, congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes and other symptoms associated with cold and allergy season.

This increased demand on services decreases the availability of appointments and reduces other patients’ ability to access care in a timely manner. In order to better accommodate this, the 86th MDG has put together a multidisciplinary team of medical experts to assess and treat those suffering from the discomfort associated with colds and allergies.

Most patients with cold symptoms do not req uire a visit to the medical group as

there is no cure for the common cold, and the vast maj ority of patients with cough and cold symptoms will get better on their own within three t e ays e er, r some patients, the symptoms are severe enough to warrant a visit, and the Cold and Allergy Clinic will play a big role this season in providing that care.

“In most cases, this will enable the patient to be seen within 24 hours or less when calling for an appointment for cold or allergy symptoms,” said Maj . Dara Warren, 86th Family Health Clinic clinical rse s a a e be e t, it will make more appointments available for other patients.”

When a patient calls the Family Health Clinic to make an appointment, the clerk will ask a series of q uestions regarding their medical condition to determine if they are a good candidate for the Cold and Allergy Clinic.

“The new clinic is a really good idea,” said Lt. Col. Lyn Patyski, U.S. Air Forces in r e i istrati e ce of the Courts legal advisor and operations law attorney and visitor at the clinic. “You no longer have to wait for an appointment, and it makes the whole process much faster.”

The clinic is an extension

of Family Health and is composed of a team of medical technicians, nurses and pharmacists. By pooling resources, the clinic hopes to free up one week’s worth of a medical provider’s appointments in j ust over 10 hours.

“This clinic is getting nurses back to what they do,” Warren said. “It’s getting them off the phones and able to see patients face to face. Instead of having to ask several q uestions over the phone, I can talk to my patients in person and sometimes even see answers to those q uestions j ust by looking at them.”

With the addition of this new clinic, the 86th MDG has increased its ability to serve the Ramstein community during peak cold and allergy seasons.

“This is the kind of innovation we are looking for in today’s Air Force,” said Col. Brent J ohnson, 86th MDG commander. “We need Airmen to pool resources, maximiz e skills and build e cie cies i t ay t ay operations in order to accomplish the multitude of mission demands we are facing.”

86th AW Protocol provides precision, dedication

However, what many of these Airmen may not see or experience is the amount of skill, knowledge and dedication that goes into organiz ing these events.

The 86th Airlift Wing r t c ce r i es t e guidance necessary to host these ceremonies. They also coordinate greetings on the fli t i e, are t e ace t e Air Force to distinguished visitors of Ramstein and care r t e base fla s as art their duties.

“We are the subj ect matter experts on everything that is Air Force tradition,” said Staff Sgt. Reginald Brown, 86th AW Protocol specialist.

“We represent the commander by being one of the faces you see when you come to

Ramstein, and we ensure that anybody who steps foot on this base is well taken care of.”

There is a large amount of work that goes into making sure an event or visit goes according to plan, and every detail must be checked and double-checked to keep things running smoothly.

For each ceremony and visit organiz ed, protocol reviews a detailed plan called a script, which includes all pertinent information accounting for every minute of the event. t s e ite y a ai , no-delay, no-mistake kind of j ob,” Brown said. “The level of attention to detail that is requi red to be in this position is t e e iti e ce e ce in all we do. Every event or task we do sets the standard for the next time. There’s no going backwards, taking longer or moving slower. The boundaries are limitless.”

With little room for mistake, it could weigh on someone when they make one.

“This is not a j ob for j ust anyone,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Long, 86th AW Protocol specialist. “You have to be humble, for one. There are times you will make mistakes and you can’t dwell on them. You have to have the bearing to be able to continue if something is going wrong.”

Despite the pressure, protocol Airmen strive to rise to the challenge and embrace the opportunity to learn everything they can about Air

Force traditions.

“It’s a great experience because you get to see how things operate other than only seeing the event,” Long said.

“You don’t see all the mechanisms behind a clock; you j ust see a clock face. When you’re doing this ( j ob) , you see every single screw and minute detail that goes into the making of that clock.” e t e r t c ce makes every effort to represent the best of the Air Force

and goes above and beyond to care for the people and events they are in charge of, many of those people take notice and value their dedication.

“Recently we’ve had a couple of groups that have emailed us back thanking us for our help with their event,” Long said. “We also received one saying that this was their best stop in the entire tour, and the Kansas City cheerleaders said the same thing last year. So it’s really cool to have people say they appreciate everything we did.” e ce as r i e a list of tools that is available on its SharePoint site to help anyone who is in charge of an event. Every ceremony they cover has its own folder which contains all the information needed to properly execute that particular ceremony. However, if anyone still has que stions or requi res further assistance, protocol Airmen are available to provide support.

“People don’t realiz e our j ob is to help them with all of their que stions,” said Brown.

“We do this day in and day out so, if they give us a call, we can help them put together all the pieces for their event.”

Over the course of history, the Air Force has gained a rich heritage, full of honor, sacri ce a tra iti e Airmen from the 86th AW r t c ce e icate t eir time and skills to ensuring those traditions are held to the highest standard here at Ramstein.

CPIP survey strengthens Airmen, weapons system

by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein was one of 15 global sites, including Air National Guard units, to undergo a survey by Air Combat Command’s Culture and Process Improvement Program Nov. 19 to 21.

The survey gathered information to determine areas for improvement for the Distributed Common Ground System enterprise community and to recommend solutions to ACC senior leaders by mid-December.

“The enterprise has been working at an extremely high operations tempo in a deployed-in-place construct for more than 15 years, which has resulted in a number of stress factors and other systemic challenges,” said Col. Donna O’Harren, ACC’s

DCGS CPIP lead. “The survey was conducted at a grassroot, peer-based level and gathered input directly from t e e re ar i t ese c a lenges.”

The DCGS enterprise is an Air Force weapons system composed of 27 regionally-aligned, globally-networked sites, including one at Ramstein.

With such a high-tempo career e , it ca be be e cial for leadership to ensure that the Airmen working under them are able to cope a ays t a et e b easier a re e cie t “In my opinion, this aggressive effort demonstrates that the ACC commander is committed to improving the qua lity of life for our Airmen a t eir a i ies a ing ways to improve mission effectiveness,” said Lt. Col. J oseph M. Appel, 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance and

Reconnaissance Group deputy commander. “So, I expect the results of the CPIP will be swift and positive.”

The process began when ACC leaders sent surveys in early October to approximatey 9, cers, e iste a civilian personnel to identify the key areas that needed improvement. Building upon what was gathered in those surveys, three teams traveled to 15 global sites and conducted further surveys and interviews to gain insight into even the lowest-level problem areas.

“It’s important to demonstrate to the Airmen and families of the DCGS enterprise that ACC is committed to hearing and understanding challenges and taking action to implement improvement where we are able,” O’Harren said. “This will help those working in the enterprise to know they have a voice in

making improvements for their future, which will in turn help create a more sustainable force that can progress and thrive.”

The CPIP team also included families in the survey.

“Families are such an integral part of the support network for military members,” O’Harren said. “They too are impacted by the high operations tempo and stress of the DCGS enterprise. Duty stressors can sometimes bleed over into stress at home and vice versa, so it was important to capture the challenges and improvement ideas from the families’ perspective.”

According to O’Harren, the focus of the survey was to gather direct feedback from the DCGS community on iss es ab t b satis acti , duty stressors, base support services and more.

“The CPIP team was able to achieve strong participation from Airmen from all of our mission sets, as well as from their families, for both days of the interview pro-

cess,” Appel said. “The CPIP team also worked around the clock to interview our Airmen who work 24/ 7 operations.”

Each base’s surveys and interviews were analyz ed by a staff contingent at Headq uarters ACC who provided real-time feedback to the teams to continually improve the process. This gave the survey teams a better chance of success and made it possible for them to discover new experiences and knowle e it i t eir career e “Members from various DCGS units who traveled to the sites and participated as interviewers gained a broader understanding and appreciation of the wider enterprise in which they serve, and they will take those insights back to their units,” O’Harren said.

“They were energiz ed to be part of this historic undertaking.”

For many of the Airmen, shooting at t e eibr c e ra e as t eir rst experience meeting and talking with German soldiers.

“I’ve seen them walk around a stei , b t t is is y rst ti e interacting with them,” said Staff Sgt. Brooke Coleman, 86th SFS standardiz ation and evaluation evaluator. “It has been a great experience with the Germans. They’re very helpful, knowl-

edgeable and have the utmost professionalism out on the range. I highly encourage Airmen, if they have the opportunity, to come out here to take it.”

The possibility of more Airmen participating in the marksmanship challenge is not a long shot, as leaders from both armed forces have expressed interest in continuing to build this partnership.

“We have a really big event today with so many U.S. Airmen, and I’m very happy to have them here,” Gohritz said.

“For my soldiers, it’s a great pleasure to have this training with them. They really enj oy that because it’s something different from their normal duty, and I would really like to keep this going.”

Passion, care drives boy to help others How could someone play soccer without shoes? Why would somebody choose to play soccer without a soccer ball? These q uestions were spinning around a 9-year-old boy’s head.

His father, Chief Master Sgt. David Tester, U.S. Air Forces in Europe operations superintendent, had j ust returned from a deployment to Ethiopia.

While there, he witnessed kids that were playing without safety gear and kicking around make-shift soccer balls of bundled metal. While trying to explain this to his son Brayden, he noticed the puz z led look in his eyes.

That puz z led look q uickly turned to one of disbelief when ester e ti e e s eci c moment he witnessed.

“My dad told me this story about how this kid, who tried to kick a can around with his friends, sliced his foot open,” Brayden said.

After hearing this, Brayden immediately wanted to help. is rst i ea, a t ery generous, wasn’t very practi-

cal, according to his father. e rst t i e a te to do was take all the money in his bank account and buy them eq uipment,” Tester said.

In light of saving his son’s bank account, Tester brainstormed a more realistic way to help: a donation drive of soccer eq uipment. It was a foundation that Brayden q uickly j umped on and took off from there.

Brayden gathered support from around the KMC to collect soccer gear for the Ethiopian children.

Brayden’s mother, Sabrina, said the urge he had to help the Ethiopian children spurred him to make the drive happen.

“It was immediately after David told Brayden about the kids that he made posters about the drive and hung them everywhere throughout the school,” Sabrina said. “He wanted to help them so badly.”

Brayden was able to do this by working with his principal at the time, J oshua Adams, now the Ramstein Middle School principal, throughout the duration of the drive.

According to Sabrina, it was an astounding success.

Once the Testers boxed all the donated eq uipment, they bundled it all up and shipped it 6,500 miles south to the town of Arba Minch, Ethiopia.

Airmen from 1st Combat Communications Sq uadron were anxious to gift the boxes to those less fortunate around them.

J ust returning from their own deployments to Ethiopia, some of Tester’s coworkers were able to see the impact ray e a e rst a e ery day. Kids were playing soccer with real soccer cleats and had real soccer balls and j erseys.

“You could see the smiles on their faces, and you could feel the appreciation they had as e tte t e it s es, cleats and soccer j erseys,” said Tech. Sgt. Adam Stewart, 1st CBCS tactical network operations supervisor. “In a way, you could say that Brayden’s actions directly motivated our

In the end, Brayden was given answers to those q uestions circling in his head. His passion for soccer and people drove him to do extraordinary things, and that, according to his parents, is what makes him so strong.

Helpful holiday tips for single parents

by Emily McCormick 86th Medical Operations Squadron Family Advocacy The holiday season can be exciting and j oyful, but it can also be tough for families impacted by separation or divorce. If you are a parent facing y r rst i ay seas as a si e are t, y may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed or concerned about how your children will cope. You are not alone.

Children grow q uickly, and the years can race by.

This holiday season is the only one you’ll spend with your child at this age and stage. This holiday season can be positive and provide happy memories for you and your children, despite the loss you’ve experienced.

Here are some tips suggested by parents who have been down this road: • Plan ahead.

If there is not already a custody or legal separation in place, have a meeting with the other parent and develop a schedule for the holidays. Be speci c ab t ates a r a ic ti es Knowing when time with each parent is scheduled will decrease anxiety for your child and help them feel they don’t have to choose between you. You

may want to discuss gifts with the other parent to avoid duplication or overspending.

• Create new traditions.

First holidays, birthdays and special events are es ecia y i c t r c i re i se aration. They may express sadness and anger about changes in family traditions and having to split time between households. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and then talk about creative ways to celebrate the holidays that include new as well as old traditions. It’s easy to focus on the big events around the holidays, but each moment spent with your child offers opportunity for fun and connection. Put up a tree and make some new ornaments.

Visit a Christmas market. Build a snowman or take a walk in the woods. Play a board game and have hot cocoa. Do volunteer work as a family. There are many ways to connect as a family and have fun.

• Be a role model.

Children take their cues from the adults around them. If a parent focuses on the losses and what’s missing from the holidays because of the divorce or se arati , it a es it re i c t r c i re t cope with their feelings. Give your child the message, “This may be a tough season for our family, but we will get through it. I love you, and every day is a day to celebrate because we have each other.”

• Be positive and encouraging about the child’s time with the other parent.

It can be hard to hear about the fun time a child is anticipating or has experienced with the other parent. Allow them to talk about it. Your child may worry about you being sad or lonely while they’re not with you. Give them the message that you will miss them, but you have plans during that time and you’ll be OK. If your child won’t be seeing the other parent over the holidays, ensure that your child is able to video chat, have a phone call or otherwise be in contact.

• Practice self-care.

Holidays can be stressful enough without the added stress of family separation. Be kind to yourself. Find someone you trust with whom you can talk. Take a time out if you need it. Acknowledge that this is a tough time, and set limits to what you commit to.

Americans support host community, donation drive Courtesy of the Atlantic Academy Kaiserslautern The Atlantic Academy in Kaiserslautern recently sponsored a two-month-long donation drive for refugees.

Americans donated items such as clothing, bedding, household items, toys and more. About 30 members of the J unior ROTC, KMC Eagles Hockey Organiz ation and the Kaiserslautern Chapter of the RuffRyders Germany helped organiz e, sort and pack the items at the Atlantic Academy.

“The donation drive has been an overwhelming success in the eyes of organiz ers, participants and the local recipients of the donations,” said Sarah Wagner, Atlantic Academy education manager. “Our staff distributed the packed items to various local institutions, which are tasked with supporting the increasing amount of incoming refugees.”

More than 100 large boxes and bags were taken to supporting organiz ations, stores for needy people and housing installations for refugees.

Additionally, Ramstein Inns provided household items including plates, pillows, blankets and glasses.

“Staff from the Ramstein Inns delivered the items in excellent condition to numerous institutions, which rely on volunteers and have limited capabilities to organiz e transports themselves,” Wagner said.

The donation drive was the kick-off event for the Atlantic Academy to further engage in ta s it city cia s t e institutionaliz e the American engagement and create more volunteer opportunities in the KMC in the future.

“Since donation offers still pour in, it will be important to pass out information in English to Americans and to facilitate the communication between Americans and local German institutions,” said Dr. David Sirakov, Atlantic Academy director. “I would like to emphasiz e that the donation drive has been a great show of support and solidarity from the Americans for their local host community, which currently is facing considerable challenges and appreciates every helping hand.”

Preparation P

Now is the time of year for Christmas markets and their delicious foods! Many may wonder how to prepare some of the items you see at the markets. This week and next week we will share some of those recipes.

Ingredients (for 4 people)

• 1 pound of potatoes, peeled and diced in 1 inch cubes • 4 carrots, peeled and finely diced • 2 onions, finely diced • 1 leek, cut in half rings finely chopped • 2 stalks of celery, finely chopped • 8 Vienna sausages (they come 2 linked together at your local economy grocery store) • 1 cup of finely chopped cooked bacon • 1 tablespoons of lard • 4 x 6 inch piece of bacon rind (get this on the economy or at your local butcher) • 4 quarts of broth, any flavor will do nicely • 2 teaspoon salt

U a large pot to hold all ingredients. Heat Use the lard. Add the bacon and onions. After two minutes add the potatoes. Cook for two more minutes and then add the carrots. After two more minutes, add the celery. After 5-10 minutes add the leek. Let all slightly simmer and then add the broth to the mixture. Add the bacon rind now for flavoring.

Cut the Vienna sausages in 1 inch pieces.

Add spices. Let all simmer for 1 to 1.5 hours.

When all potatoes and vegetables are soft, remove the rind and stir the soup with a whisk. This will make it a nice creamy soup.

Add the liquid cream and Vienna sausages.

Let the sausages warm to heat of soup. You have a nice winter Christmas delight for your enjoyment at home! Serve with a nice fresh dark bread.

Santa Claus brings goodies Saturday night

by Santa Claus with candy, cookies, nuts, oranges and little gifts. The following day, Dec. 6, is “Nikolaustag,” or Santa Claus Day. The day is observed in honor of Saint Nikolaus, who was bishop of Myra, Asia Minor, during the fourth century. Nikolaus was born around A.D. 270 in Patras and died Dec. 6 345. Two hundred years after he passed away, he was canoniz ed.

As the patron of children, he is one of the most favored saints. Legend says he once restored life to three little boys who were killed by an evil innkeeper, cut up and preserved in barrels of vinegar. Nikolaus found them, put them together, and after saying a prayer, the boys were alive again.

Saint Nikolaus is also known as patron of skippers, because he was able to calm stormy seas and save sailors’ lives.

At the age of 19, his uncle, the bishop of Myra, ordained him. The new priest was then entered into the monastery of Sion as abbot. When his parents died of the plague, he inherited all their property and gave it to the poor. That’s why in another

legend, Nikolaus became the patron of maidens. He saved three daughters of a poor family from becoming prostitutes for not having a dowry. One night, he secretly dropped bags of gold through their windows so the girls would be able to marry. He helped a lot of needy people by q uietly giving gifts.

Nowadays, besides visiting families at home, Santa Claus also makes his appearance in kindergartens, where he recites each child’s name out of his golden book and states whether or not that child has behaved well. The children have to sing him a song before they receive chocolate and sweets. Some children fear him because he might bring them a rod to let

them know that they didn’t behave well throughout the year. But usually, the rod is hung with sweets and is supposed to remind children of their bad behavior.

The costume of Nikolaus varies from place to place.

In some German regions, he is dressed like a bishop with mitre and bishop’s crook and is accompanied by “Knecht Rupprecht,” a shabbily dressed peasant who carries the sack t ys a treats, fl ris es bundles of rods and threatens punishment to naughty children. In the Rheinland-Pfalz area, he appears mostly in a red robe, a peaked cap and has a long white beard. He is a friendly old man who accepts

children’s Christmas wish lists and asks children to promise to change for the better.

Santa Claus will make his appearance in Kaiserslautern from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the ice skating rink in the event hall of the Gartenschau.

He also will be on tour with a reindeer from 5 to 6 p.m.

The Zoo in KaiserslauternSiegelbach will offer a guided tour for children with Santa Claus at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Besides making stops at the different compounds to see various animals, the children get to see a nativity scene with live animals.

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Through Dec. 23, the Christmas market in Kaiserslautern is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sundays. It is set up around Stiftskirche and on Schillerplatz . After the Christmas holidays, it will turn into a New Year’s market from Dec. 27 to 30. The market features more than 40

vendors, food and beverage booths, musical entertainment, a children’s program and various Christmas-related activities.

Vendors sell typical Christmas decorations, including tree ornaments, candles, angels, nutcrackers and Advent wreaths. Shoppers i i eas r rist as presents, such as wooden toys, leather items, glass products, j ewelry and pottery.

Medieval Christmas market in St. Wendel Sankt Wendel holds its Christmas market combined with a medieval market Saturday to Dec. 13. Opening hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. A 12-meter-tall Christmas pyramid, life-sized nutcrackers, a miniature village with 200 dwarfs, a big nativity scene and tobbogan run are available. More than 140 little decorated Christmas booths offer arts and crafts, gift ideas and regional culinary specialties. A medieval market features vendors in historical costumes and craftsmen such as basket makers, lantern makers, blacksmiths, potters, turners and soap makers. Jugglers, dancers, singers, musicians and fire-eaters entertain in the streets and on stage. Sankt Wendel is north of Neunkirchen. Parking is available in City-Garage 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.

Health Creating better habits during the holidays

by Marissa Pierce, CaFT Contributing writer The holiday season is here which means Thanksgiving leftovers, countless family gatherings and holiday parties. After the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, many of us break out our New Year’s resolutions with the feeling of guilt from uncontrollable indulging over the holiday season.

However, before all the madness gets underway, now is the perfect time to consciously begin making ea t ier c ices t rst it ca be i c t, b t er ti e t ese c ices can become healthy habits which leads to a healthier life.

A balanced combination of exercise, nutrition and proper sleep all contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Beginning by making one small change at a time is a good start to making all of these part of your everyday life.

For the average adult, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week, and strength training at least twice per week. That is only thirty minutes a day of aerobic training and perhaps some extra time to

add in some strength training.

If you don’t think you have time to go to the gym between all of the holiday shopping and gift wrapping, don’t stress. There are other ways to get exercise in, such as j ogging or biking around your neighborhood. For the strength training days, there are plenty of great body weight exercises that req uire no eq uipment: Pushups, situps, sq uats and lunges are j ust a few excellent exercises that work the maj or muscles of your body.

If time is an issue for you, a q uick but highly effective workout option is called Tabata interval training. Pick an exercise, such as pushups, complete as many repetitions as you can for 20 seconds, resting for 10 seconds. Do this eight times, rest one minute and then pick another exercise. This interval training uses four exercises total, and the entire process only takes about 15 minutes. If you put forth maximum effort, you will be dripping with sweat, and your strength training will be completed for the day. Also know that Tabata training isn’t for everyone because of its intensity, high impact and short recovery period, so decide what exercise routine is best for you.

If you are still thinking that you don’t have the time between the gift

wrapping and holiday shopping, reflect at acti ities c s e your day. There may be times when you are spending hours catching up on your favorite TV show or scrolling through Facebook. That could be the er ect rt ity t reflect y r t ess a s, t r t e tec y and get your sweat on.

However, no matter how much you workout, it is all for naught if you do not nourish your body properly. Some simple guidelines to go by are: drink plenty of water and other non-sugary liq uids, keep your sugar intake as low as possible and avoid eating processed foods. It’s also very helpful to use an online calorie calculator to determine how many calories you consume on a daily basis. Having a t ess a s c as yFit ess a is good for logging the foods you eat as well as your daily activity. More often than not, we actually eat much more than we think we do, especially during the holidays.

The next time you are on a grocery shopping trip, take the time to check out your options. Many times there are healthier products sitting right next to the convenient, processed items many of us are tempted to buy.

Checking out the nutrition facts will help you to determine what is more

or less processed. Two big things to q uickly glance at on the nutrition label: sugar content and the ingredients list. Too much sugar is bad for you, period. The less of it you consume the better. When you are looking at the ingredients list, less is always more.

Now that you have the proper exercise and nutrition down, don’t forget about sleep. This is the only chance our body gets to completely shut down and repair itself. Being well rested helps us feel and perform better, and it also helps ward off illnesses. The age-old advice of getting eight hours a night is still great advice, but some of us may need a little more. Begin signaling your body to relax by winding down about an hour before you go to bed. This will help you fall asleep faster.

So instead of looking in the mirror on New Year’s day with a frown on your face, start making healthier choices today. By the time the holiday season is in full swing, these choices will have turned into habits, and you will already have a j ump start on your resolutions for the new year.

Germany’s Christmas Markets

For those of us lucky enough to be in Germany throughout the festive season, you will know that there is a Christmas market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in almost every town and city.

These have been part of the shopping scene in Germany for centuries and I like nothing better than wrapping up warm and heading to the Christmas market wherever I happen to be, in the early evening. There is always the Glühwein to warm you up, whether it is made from white (or more traditionally) red wine. If there is an ice rink especially for the Christmas market, so much the better. My kids love the one in the middle of Frankfurt.

You can discover numerous handmade crafts at a Christmas market, from Christmas decorations and woollen hats, through to gingerbread men and Lebkucken and there is a plethora of gifts for people of all ages. If you are stuck for gift ideas go to the nearest Christmas market to you and wander around the festive stalls for inspiration.

The sight and smells of Germany’s Christmas markets are truly wonderful, the smell of spicy hot sausages (Würstchen) and roasting chestnuts (Kastanien) pervade the air and

make you feel hungry, even if you have just eaten!

It was Martin Luther (1483 – 1546) who not only began the Protestant Reformation in Europe, but who changed the ways in which people in Germany celebrated Christmas. Prior to Luther, children in Germany received presents on the saints days of Saint Martin (November 11th) or on Saint Nicholas’ day (December 6th). Martin Luther suggested that children should receive presents from the “Christ child” and the markets that traditionally had taken place in winter, especially those in southern Germany, became known as the “Christkindlsmarkt.”

Germany’s winter markets were usually held in squares close to churches, and in 1616 there is a tale of a priest in Nürnberg complaining that there was no one in the church for the Christmas Eve afternoon service because all the usual congregation members were in the Christmas market! Despite his protestations, the annual Christmas market in Nürnberg is as popular as ever, along with well-known markets in Heidelberg, Wiesbaden, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Munich. But the truth is wherever you go in Germany, you will find a beautiful

and festive Christmas market.

If you have children, they may be lucky enough to receive a small gift from Saint Nicholas at one of the Christmas markets, as he often appears at certain times in some of the bigger markets.

The German Christmas market tradition has now spread throughout the world including the States! However, for me there is nothing quite like strolling around a traditional Christmas market in Germany.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)

•Manage the day-to-day A/P, A/R and General Ledger activity for assigned region. Oversee preparation and accuracy of monthly financial reporting and reconciliation. Required Qualifications
