Attention: JFK, LBH expand service hours by Airman 1st Class Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Jawbone Flight Kitchen at Ramstein and the Lindberg Hof Dining Facility at Kapaun Air Station have expanded their hot meal service hours to better suit customers. “The decision to expand the Flight Kitchen is based off normal customer supply and demand,” said Master Sgt. Kyle C. Todd, 786th Force Support Squadron food service section chief. “There are numerous customers on Ramstein such as flight line

maintainers, swing or night shifts and even weekends. We want everyone to know that we are here to support their needs and have this capability. With the Flight Kitchen already a 24-hour facility, it was most practical to expand its operations to offer the four additional hot meal periods on top of still providing their box and flight meal service when other food establishments may be closed.” The JFK is open to anyone with base access to Ramstein while the LBH is accessible to Department of Defense ID card holders, including dependents and members of foreign governments. U.S. cash is the

only acceptable form of payment at both locations and meals are take-out only. JFK, which is located in building 3332, next to the Ramstein Passenger Terminal, offers hot meals four times every day with prices varying depending on the available items. Airmen can also pick up a box meal anytime, 24/7. The box meals cost $5.50 and include a sandwich, chips, snack item, water and a choice of soda, juice or sports drink. Jawbone Flight Kitchen: Monday-Sunday • Breakfast: 6-8 a.m.

In the eight months since COVID-19 arrived on base, Ramstein has come a long way. Past and present 86th Airlift Wing leadership allow for a comparison of Ramstein’s initial reactions to the virus with how they’re currently managing. In March the base confirmed its first case of COVID-19, marking a step into uncharted territory. Operations had to be flexible to prevent the spread of the virus. Maj. David Mackintosh, 86th Airlift Wing plans and programs officer from March through May and current 3rd Air Force Commander’s Action Group member, led the way in uncertain times. He took over COVID-19 operations when the virus quickly became a theatre-wide issue. As plans were made, important questions from the public continued to mount: How would base residents be safe? December 18, 2020 then and now from Page 1 Would children still go to Child Development Centers? Would schools remain open? These were questions leaders had to answer at a rapid pace, gathering Airmen from many units that ranged from the 86th Force Support Squadron to 86th Maintenance Squadron into the operational planning team. At the same time businesses and borders were closing, Ramstein continued to operate as the “Gateway to the World.” Another challenge was keeping the base safe from COVID-19 while remaining open. “It was a balancing act to manage the requirements coming through Ramstein,” Mackintosh said. “There are some users who had no issues leaving the (passenger) terminal and going to stay at Vogelweh, but there’s some users who could not leave Ramstein because we had to make sure they weren’t infected.” Leadership also had to contend with rapidly changing guidance, from wing-level to as far up as Department of Defense guidance. Accounting for host nation guidance added another level of difficulty. “(It) was a significant challenge early on keeping up with everything and not knowing when the next level of headquarters guidance was going to come down and how it might restrict us further,” said Maj. Joe Baldwin, 86th Airlift Wing plans and programs action officer and COVID-19 operational planning team leader. “There wasn’t a great mechanism for all of that to get distributed and communicated.” It wasn’t until June when things

settled into a new normal for Baldwin and his team. Businesses began to re-open and the health protection condition downgraded to Bravo. Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, the previous 86th AW commander, stood down the operational planning team, but Baldwin remained to handle COVID-19 operations. “We got into this rhythm,” Baldwin said. “We’re getting deployments going through again, operations are picking back up again, we’re allowing base and morale events again.” Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th AW commander, resumed the operational planning team in August, prioritizing a single point of contact and streamlined communication for COVID-19 operations. Experience from previous COVID19 experiences allowed Baldwin and his team to better prepare for future potential outbreaks. The ordeal was one of the most challenging events in Mackintosh’s career, but what made it rewarding was how unrestricted he was. “Since there wasn’t any existing guidance in how this has ever been done before we came up with it on our own using all the experts we had in the room,” Mackintosh said. What made the experience memorable for Baldwin was getting to see all the various units on Ramstein and how they worked together. “There are so many different mission sets represented on Ramstein,” Baldwin said. “It’s unbelievable. (For example,) seeing how important the role of Public Affairs is and seeing all the different things Mission Support Group does is incredible.”

Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns by a 3-to-1 ratio. That is why it is important to ensure your smoke detectors are tested monthly and that batteries are replaced every 6 months. When global time changes occur this is a great time to replace smoke detector batteries. An update on COVID and flu vaccines

by Col. (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander On Sunday, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced new COVID restrictions across Germany. These increased restrictions extend the lockdown until at least Jan. 10. In Kaiserslautern, COVID case counts remain elevated, 124-130 cases per 100 thousand. Unfortunately, Germany continues to see increasing mortality rates (death rates) across the country. Kaiserslautern has had over two times the number of deaths in the last 30 days as they experienced in the first nine months of the pandemic. On Ramstein, the number of active cases is also on an upward trend over the past week. Leadership is taking a hard look at the various base facilities, and we can expect additional restrictions on base in accordance with host nation guidance. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Emergency Use Authorization for the first U.S. COVID vaccine. This is the Pfizer product, the same immunization that the United Kingdom started administering to their citizens earlier this month. The next product being considered is the Moderna vaccine, which is scheduled to be considered by the FDA this week. The FDA only authorizes the use of a vaccine after careful and rigorous testing and trials. I have no information with regard

to when we will receive the vaccine locally, but Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will be one of the first overseas medical treatment facilities to receive the doses. Vaccines will initially be available to a limited number of personnel, based on the phased approach outlined by the Department of Defense and the Defense Health Agency. I will be sure to share information in this forum as it becomes available. On the influenza front, we administered our partial allotment of 3,500 doses last week. Many of you were not able to receive the vaccine. We are waiting for the complete shipment, which should deliver approximately 8,000 more

doses. The good news is that all of the 1,002 surveillance specimens tested across Europe last week were negative. Additionally, there were no hospital laboratory confirmed cases in Europe last week. Similar data is seen in the United States, where influenza numbers are well below expected baselines for this time of year. The CDC Influenza Surveillance website is: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/ index.htm#ILIActivityMap Remember, prevention measures for COVID also prevent spread of the flu. Until next week, stay safe and healthy. Wash your hands, watch your distance, and wear your mask!

Host Nation Office promotes community cohesion, German relations by Airman 1st Class John Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein Air Base operates under a unique agreement with Germany. The base sits on German national territory, provided to U.S. forces for exclusive use under a stationing contract between the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States. What makes the relationship unique is the contract can be terminated by either nation at any time with two-year notice. Such a unique and important contract requires a stable relationship built on mutual respect and continuity. In the ever-changing military environment, the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Host Nation Office provides this continuity by acting as the conduit between host nation officials and base leadership. “Germans like trust,” said Roberto M. Saldanha da Costa, 86th AW senior host nation advisor. “Germans like to get to know someone over a couple of years.” While this can be challenging with changes of command occurring every two years, the HNO serves as a consistent point of contact for German politicians, civic leaders and the local German population. The HNO is a direct resource for U.S. military and German leadership when there are questions or concerns about any changes or developments in German-American matters. Its staff of local nationals provide expertise and comprehensive

guidance to both parties. “This office provides continuity,” da Costa said. “Our staff of local nationals have built strong relationships with host nation leaders over the years.” Traditionally, wing commanders and German leaders would have opportunities to interact directly at meetings and social and cultural

events on and off base, but COVID19 has eliminated most engagements this year, da Costa said. Instead, alternative networking opportunities such as teleconferences, email and letters, virtual meetings, and the GermanAmerican Community Office have been used to keep those important host nation connections intact. The GACO is located in Kaiserslautern and provides a venue for German leaders and the public to meet one-on-one with Air Force, Army and Kaiserslautern representatives. Additionally, German leaders now have the opportunity to schedule faceto-face meetings with Maj. Gen. Randall Reed, Third Air Force and Kaiserslautern Military Community

commander, who works from the GACO once a month. Host nation relations have been crucial during COVID-19, as both U.S. military and German leaders have worked together to confront the pandemic and cooperatively establish safety guidelines. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, U.S. leadership and the Host Nation Office have continued to be in constant communication with German leaders and officials,” da Costa said. “We’ve always been in constant communication. COVID has just changed the way we communicate with each other.” Much of this communication has been with the Kaiserslautern County commissioner, Ralf Leßmeister, and his team, as they

are the German authority responsible for COVID-19 matters. “The importance of a close relationship with the Host Nation Office at Ramstein Air Base is particularly apparent in the current pandemic,” Leßmeister said. “The Host Nation Office ensures local politicians have a direct link to U.S. armed forces to communicate information and answer inquiries quickly and effectively, which we greatly appreciate.” During the pandemic, the team of host nation advisors have also played a vital role in translating each state ordinance and hygiene concept into English, helping Americans to understand and comply with host nation rules and expectations. This in turn leads to positive relations with the local community. U.S. military and German relations are important because the Air Force and Army are guests while in Germany, and support from the host nation and its local, state and federal leaders is key to mission success. “The U.S. military employs host nation advisors like myself, who work hard every day to make sure that cultural sensitivities and language barriers are continuously overcome,” da Costa said. “Through direct contact with host nation and U.S. military leaders, we are able to keep the strong U.S.-German relations, even during difficult times.”

Airlifter of the Week: Airman encourages excellence Story & photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing recognized Staff Sgt. Marquette Richardson, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron facility excellence leadership team noncommissioned officer in charge, as Airlifter of the Week, for his leadership and attention to detail, Nov. 24. Richardson, a Brent, Alabama native, is responsible for managing a diverse group of 12-15 Airmen, who have completed the first term Airmen class and represent several career fields across the wing. “Our mission is to beautify the base,” said Richardson. “If this program is not run correctly it looks bad on my squadron, and that's one thing I won't let happen.” FLEX Airmen are responsible for ensuring base trash cans are emptied, marquees around base are pressure washed, and vegetation from walkways and pavements are removed to ensure roads around Ramstein are accessible. “It can sometimes be difficult to unify such a diverse group of Airmen with different backgrounds and personalities,” Richardson said. “I find I’m most successful at motivating Airmen, when I get them to see the bigger picture. I’m also out there working with them everyday, getting dirty. I’m rarely at my desk.” Richardson, originally a pavements and construction equipment specialist, arrived at Ramstein approximately three months ago, but he believes his tenure at FLEX will help him strengthen his leadership skills. “This special duty is providing a foundation and the skills I need to run my own shop one day,” Richardson said. “This is a great opportunity to learn and lead people.” Richardson was recently selected for another special duty, which will allow him to be embedded with the 435th Construction and Training Squadron starting in January 2021. “My goal is to be an asset to 435th CTS,” Richardson said. “I want to improve myself and the unit. I’m looking forward to learning more about my job, taking on different roles and enhancing my leadership skills.” Before Richardson leaves, he wants to revamp the FLEX program to make sure the person who comes after him has a more efficient means of successfully implementing the mission. “Prior to graduating high school I wanted to join the military, and after a few years of college, I decided to follow that dream,” Richardson said. “It's honestly been the best thing for my life. I’ve lived in Hawaii, Korea, and now Germany. My experiences have been awesome. I’m living the dream. I'm honored to be the Airlifter of the Week.”

by Dustin R. Grant-USDA Military Preclearance Advisor to EUCOM Military Agricultural Preclearance Program The Asian hornet, also known as the yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina), is a species of hornet indigenous to Southeast Asia. They are slightly smaller than the European hornets and are generally much darker brown or black with distinctive yellow legs. (Note: This insect is not to be confused with the Asian Giant Hornet or so called “Killer Hornet”. This larger species has not been found in Europe.) Like other hornets, Asian Hornets builds nests that may house colonies of several thousand individuals. All females in the colony are armed with formidable stingers with which they defend their nests and kill their prey. The nest is of paper, roughly in the shape of a huge egg, and can be as large as 20 inches in length. It is of concern as an invasive species in several other countries. Asian hornets opportunistically hunt a very wide range of insects, including flies, and dragonflies. The major concern about their invasiveness however, is that when they find a bee colony or an apiary, they tend to settle down and specialize in honeybees as their prey.

Asian hornets were brought across to Europe by mistake when a container of Chinese pottery holding the insects entered France in 2004. Since that time the species has quickly spread throughout much of France, but also parts of Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Italy the Netherlands and most recently Germany. They were first reported on the Channel Islands and the UK mainland in 2016. Why are Asian Hornets a problem? This hornet is a serious pest of honeybees and single hornets have been known to decapitate up to 50 bees a day, dragging the bodies of their prey back to their nests. As a single hornet colony can contain thousands of individuals, they can quickly wipe out

all beehives within flight distance of their nest. Because of hornets’ larger size, their sting is more serious than that of a bee. People have been hospitalized in France after suffering anaphylactic shock as a result of multiple stings. If introduced into the United States this invader could be a serious threat to U.S. honey production and native pollinators. How can preclearance programs help keep Asian Hornets from getting into the US? Primary nests are often found in or on man-made structures. It may be introduced and transported accidentally with soil associated with plants, vehicles, garden furniture and pots, outdoor articles, camping equipment, etc. Dormant hornet queens can overwinter in nests and can be transported to new areas. All articles stored outdoors for any length of time including all vehicles and military rolling stock should be carefully inspected for active or dormant hornet nests. Nests of any bees, wasps, or hornets should be removed before transport to CONUS.

CSAF releases action orders to accelerate change across Air Force

by Air Force News Service Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. released the CSAF Action Orders to Accelerate Change Across the Air Force Dec. 4. In August, Brown released his strategic approach entitled Accelerate Change or Lose, in which he described his view of the strategic landscape as Air Force chief of staff and, from that, his emphasis on why change is necessary. The newly-released action orders now represent his call to Airmen to move forward aggressively in the push toward change; the “what” to the first document’s “why.” The document outlines four Action Orders: • Action Order A: Airmen des cribes a people-first approach. This means identifying attri-

butes of Airmen the Air Force needs and reviewing personnel and talent management systems to meet the identified needs. • Action Order B: Bureaucracy says the Air Force needs to speed up its decision-making process. Changing design processes will improve effectiveness and efficiency, allowing more space for innovation. • Action Order C: Competition explains that Airmen need to understand their role in the long-term strategic power competitions between the U.S., Russia and China. The Air Force must improve its understanding of competitors’ ambitions and ways of war to inform how it organizes, trains and equips Airmen.

• Action Order D: Design Implementation says the Air Force needs to know how to adapt to changes. The service must be ready for future budget constraints by developing an affordable, analytically defensible and Congressionallysupported force structure. While the Action Orders provide the “what,” the “how” represents the answers to these problems, according to the document. Airmen will provide these answers, cutting through bureaucracy with global competition in mind, to reshape the design of the future. Department of the Air Force releases fiscal year 2021 Selective Retention Bonus program

Tax Center prepares for 2021 — Seeking volunteers

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

by Jean Griep 86th Airlift Wing Legal Office The global pandemic means a lot of ‘new normal’ process changes for the coming year; but one thing will remain the same the need to file your taxes. That’s why your Ramstein Tax Center is already hard at work preparing for the 2021 tax season. The Ramstein Tax Center is seeking volunteers. If you are looking for an interesting and rewarding opportunity, not to mention the chance to learn all about taxes and tax preparation, then the Ramstein Tax Center is the place. Each volunteer receives free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) training, a reliable and trusted resource for preparing tax returns in accordance with current tax laws and Internal Revenue Service standards. Each filing season, tens of thousands of dedicated VITA volunteers around the globe prepare millions of federal and state returns. If you would like to be part of this important team and make a difference in your community, please contact the Ramstein Tax Office at DSN: 480-1040 or Commercial: 06371-47-1040.

Department of the Air Force officials released details Dec. 10 on the fiscal year 2021 Selective Retention Bonus program, which includes 37 eligible Air Force specialties. “Overall retention levels are at record highs and manning within many of our career fields is healthy,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “This reduces our requirement and opportunity to utilize retention bonuses to the same extent.” The program is designed to

improve the retention of experienced Airmen and Space Professionals in stressed career fields or those with high training costs. The Department of the Air Force will spend more than $55 million for the FY 2021 program, which includes 37 total Air Force specialty codes, including 28 that remain eligible from the mid-year FY 2020 SRB program. Nine AFSCs were added to the program and 40 AFSCs were removed from the list. The FY 2021 SRB program goes into effect Jan. 5, 2021. Members in skills identified for a reduction or termination, and who are currently eligible to reenlist, will have until Feb. 4, 2021 to take advantage of

Courtesy of the Welcome to RheinlandPfalz program and 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Department of Defense Education Activity schools in the Kaiserslautern Military Community were recently recognized for their continued partnership with local German schools. Undersecretary Nicole Steingaß from the Rheinland-Pfalz Ministry of the Interior honored DODEA and German schools as “WiR! Schools” during a digital ceremony Dec. 7. This accolade is reserved for schools and kindergartens actively contributing to the promotion of a GermanAmerican exchange through joint activities and mutual fulfillment of certain criteria. WiR comes from an abbreviation of the state program Willkommen in Rheinland-Pfalz and translates to “We” in English. The Willkommen in Rheinland-Pfalz, or Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz, program launched

in 2014 to promote GermanAmerican bonds and enhance opportunities for Americans to join the life and culture of local German communities. Rheinland-Pfalz is home to more than 50,000 Americans who live alongside German neighbors. School and kindergarten partnerships help foster the local GermanAmerican understanding between young people. Representatives from DODEA, local civic leaders and military leaders attended the virtual ceremony. “I deeply respect the commitment educators from both sides have shown to our partnerships, our children and our education on a very human level,” said Col. Robert Thompson, 86th Mission Support Group commander. “A global pandemic is something no one ever expects and yet it united us in a way that most of us were unprepared for.”

Steingaß expressed her excitement to see partnerships cultivated within the schools, noting that students from both sides benefit from the special transatlantic contacts. “I celebrate these partnerships and I’m eager to see how they will further develop in the future,” said Steingaß. The following school partnership projects were honored: • Ramstein Middle School - Reichswald-Gymnasium Ramstein-Miesenbach • Kaiserslautern High School BurgGymnasium Kaiserslautern • Baumholder Middle/High School - Realschule Plus/ Fachoberschule Birkenfeld • Baumholder Middle/High School - Kindergarten Ruschberg To learn more about the state’s program and WiR Schools, visit welcome-to-rlp.org.

Gingerbread: Traditional Christmas cookie with a long history

by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event.

“Lebkuchen,” or gingerbread, is one of the most popular, oldest and beloved Christmas cookies in Germany. A big variety is available — there are lebkuchen in different shapes, with chocolate, nuts or marmelade filling. It’s not clear as to where the name “Lebkuchen” comes from. It has nothing to do with the word “leben,” to live. It most likely stems from the Latin word “libum” meaning flat cake or sacrifice cake. In early times, people sacrificed to gods what was most important to them: bread, also called “Laib.” Throughout the years “Laibkuchen” turned into “Lebkuchen.” Lebkuchen go back to Teutonic times. Teutones thought that the predecessor of lebkuchen, the “Honigkuchen” or honey cake, had magical powers and helped keep bad spirits within bounds. Also, the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks believed that honey came from the gods and had magical and healing powers. They took honey cakes to the battle and placed them as burial objects into Egyptian kings’ graves. In the Middle Ages, gingerbread was used as a means of payment. Vassals paid their feudal duty with the specialty, and dukes and civil servants were bribed with it. It was known for bringing good luck at wedding and baptism ceremonies. Gingerbread was difficult to obtain by most people, because it was a valuable specialty made of expensive ingredients. In the 11th century, a handwritten document from a monastery near Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria mentioned the “Pfefferkuchen,”

pepper cake, for the first time. In 1293, the first gingerbread baking guild was documented in Silesia. In the 14th century, the making of gingerbread became popular in Munich, Frankfurt, Basel, Vienna and Nuremberg, which is famous for its “Nürnberger Lebkuchen.” Beekeepers from a little town near Nuremberg helped bring fame and a good reputation to the town. With plenty of fir and pine trees, oak trees and linden, sloe trees, hazelnut bushes, spurge-laurels and heather growing in the forests near Nuremberg, enough nectar was available for the bees. The so-called “Zeidler,” forest and house beekeepers, founded a large guild, and harvested the honey from honeycombs in tree holes or crevices. At that time, honey was the only existing sweetener. Due to worldwide commercial connections of local merchants, the bakers of gingerbread were able to receive all necessary ingredients — pepper, ginger, cinnamon and other spices. In the Nuremberg area, the beekeepers maintained about 50 farms and in 1350, Emperor Karl IV gave them the privilege of being the only people allowed to harvest the honey in his forests. The beekeepers wore their own costumes, crossbow and arrows and were the emperor’s bodyguards. They also maintained their own court of justice where they handled all crimes committed in the forests and against the beehives. In 1796, Prussian occupants limited this jurisdiction, and three years later, they took it away totally. Today the making of gingerbread is still considered an art clothed in secrets. The modern production still relies on old recipes that masters have passed down from generation to generation. Gingerbread is a must when arranging a Christmas cookie plate in Germany.

History room links Baumholder military’s past to present This photo from 1938 shows work being done on what is now Minnick Field on Smith Barracks in Baumholder. Photo by U.S. Army

Bernd Mai, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz in Baumholder public affairs specialist, stands in the Baumholder History Room he created in the garrison headquarters building on Baumholder. Photo by Jason Tudor

by Keith Pannell Installation Management Command Public Affairs Office More than eighty years ago the farmland around the tiny village of Baumholder, Germany, was turned into a German Army training base. Today, Baumholder is one of the U.S. Army’s most important installations in Europe. “The Rock,” as it’s affectionately called, has its origins in medieval times. For centuries farmers plowed the soil around the village. Then in 1935, the Wehrmacht (the German Army) needed space for basic training and the government appropriated 29,158 acres from landowners, displacing 842 families and 14 villages. One man has made it his mission to make sure the history of Baumholder and the Baumholder Military Community (BMC) stays alive. “The Baumholder Military Community has such a unique history that we have to preserve it and tell it,” said Bernd Mai, Baumholder Public Affairs specialist for the last 37 years. “I intended to tell the history to the young Soldiers who are here so they have a better understanding of why Baumholder is the way it is.” The garrison dedicated a room inside the Baumholder Headquarters Building which has photos and artifacts showing the post’s history back to the late 1930s. “The person who really got behind this was [former interim Deputy Garrison Manager] Nick Sifer,” Mai said. “He liked the idea of a historical room in the headquarters building and was helpful in getting the initiative approved and getting everything started.” Mai said he has more than 20,000 photos digitized and he works on the room when his public affairs duties allow. He gets help from front office staff members when they have time and he also uses his network of friends and former Soldiers. The French originally occupied the Baumholder installation after WWII, but the Americans took over it in a ceremony in 1951.

So far, the display cases and walls hold many WWII artifacts including personal items from Wehrmacht and American Soldiers, a couple of fine dining plates with the Nazi symbol on the underside found at a construction site earlier this year, a recently loaned full Vietnam-era American Army uniform and photos of a visit from then-President Bill Clinton and the first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1995. Mai said the First Lady’s return visit in 1996 was memorable for many reasons. “The first lady was to meet with Baumholder dignitaries at an old restaurant on the edge of town that was easily made secure by the Secret Service. She walked in and the first thing she asked to see was the bathroom,” Mai remembered. “Nobody knew what to do because it hadn’t been planned. And, this was a bathroom that had not been updated since the early 1950s. It turns out she didn’t so much as want to see one, as use one. With all the little details planned by White House staff, nobody thought of a restroom break.” Mai calls President Clinton’s visit one of the most significant events since the Americans took over the post. The BMC was almost closed during troops cuts in 2012, but survived and in 2014 became part of the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. This photo of a change of command ceremony shows Minnick Field today. Photo by Keith Pannell

“Baumholder is a very important part of the garrison and maintains a strategic role in the U.S. Army Europe and Africa training mission,” said Col. Vance Klosinski, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander. “In addition, this historical room also highlights the strong bonds of friendship forged between Americans and Germans in the area over the last seven decades.” Some notable names to hold command positions in the BMC include: Gen. Dennis Reimer, former Chief of Staff of the Army who was 8th Infantry Division Division Artillery commander; Gen. George Casey, former Chief of Staff of the Army who was the 1st Armored Division assistant division commander and Gen. Raymond Odierno, former Chief of Staff of the Army who was also the 1st AD assistant division commander. The Kimmit family also has a large role in the military history of Baumholder. Stan Kimmit, Secretary of the US Senate and Secretary for the Majority, Col. Stan Kimmit, 8th Infantry Division commander and his sons Robert Kimmit, former Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1991 to 1993, and Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmit, former 16th Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs who was 1st Armored Division DIVARTY commander. Willi Bus, is a former local national

employee who worked at U.S. Army Depot Nahbollenbach for 14 years. He has restored two Vietnam-era Army vehicles and has loaned the Vietnam-era uniform from his personal collection to Mai because he believes the BMC has played a major role in America’s military history since WWII. “The current generation of Soldiers should also be aware of their history and what their comrades have achieved for the current generation,” said Bus. “The items on loan to the historic room have a personal relevance for me as I served the U.S. Army for fourteen years.” As the president of the GermanAmerican Friendship Committee of the city of Baumholder, Mai also provides lectures about the history of U.S. forces in Baumholder upon request. Mai said he still has work to do on the room. He’s waiting on some supplies so he can complete the display but is happy to show off the artifacts. He said the room should be available to anyone with access to the installation and hopes Baumholder units include the room in any newcomer tours they give. “Before a Soldier leaves Baumholder, they should have an idea of the history of the installation. That really helps a Soldier who is assigned here and believes he is at the end of the world.”

Online system simplifies, speeds up housing work order requests

The Army is rolling out a new smartphone app to use for Army Housing work orders. Some residents of Baumholder’s Army Family Housing are lucky enough to be taking part in testing the app.

New website and mobile app options will soon make it easier for Army housing residents to put in maintenance work order requests. While the Installation Man agement Command’s Army Main tenance Application (ArMA) won’t officially roll out until early next year, some Baumholder housing and barracks residents were tagged to participate in a pilot test of the service that began Dec. 1. “The application is a benefit for users as it provides a quick way for residents to submit and track service orders,” said Charm Sutton, Baumholder housing customer service chief. “Residents no longer have to call the DPW work order line incessantly to submit routine requests. An added bonus is that the application is interactive — photos of the issues can be submitted along with the requests, residents can communicate directly with the service order team, and updates to the service order are visible as the request moves through the completion process.” Registration is currently limited to those residents who live in the buildings selected for the pilot program and who were notified. At Smith Barracks, residents selected to help test the website include those in Bldgs. 8110, 8111, 8112, 8114, 8115, 8116, 8118, 8119, 8502, 8812, 8813, and 8816. Registration opens for all residents in January, said Sutton. “IMCOM and the Army continue to look for ways to improve the military housing experience for Soldiers and families, so I highly encourage all of our residents to register as soon as this becomes available to everyone,” said Baumholder Deputy Garrison Manager Jason Tudor. “Leadership listens to the feedback from residents and makes quality of life changes such as this to help make things better. That said, continue to provide input via direct means like the housing survey that’s currently out for response.” The new work order service allows residents to enter requests via the website or app 24/7 and receive tracking numbers immediately without having to wait for a service representative to call back. Users can also check status updates of their service issues, submit questions, comments or responses, and complete automated customer satisfaction surveys through the system.

According to IMCOM, after the test period is evaluated and the new process launched worldwide, housing residents will be able to visit the website and provide a personal, .mil or .civ email address; the location, including building number, of the residence; and unit and phone number. Family members will be able to use the website with a personal email address after the sponsor validates it. Users will be able to create a “household” in the “account management” section of the website so all members of a residence can see open maintenance requests. Specific maintenance request categories will exist for common repairs such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, broken glass and more, but if a dedicated catalog item does not exist for a specific request, residents will be able to use the general “interior” or “exterior” request option. A list of all open maintenance requests will be available at the bottom of the home page of the application for easy reference, according to IMCOM. Users will be able to click the case number to view details about a particular open maintenance request. The site will also feature an “activity” text box to provide comments or inquiries back to DPW. Any comments or questions from DPW clerks will be visible just below the input text box. In addition to benefiting residents, Sutton sees the new system helping the housing team as well. “I believe the main benefit for DPW (Directorate of Public Works) is the ability to increase customer service,” she said. “The application allows for direct dialogue and greater transparency between the maintenance team and resident in a way that isn’t possible when a service order is submitted traditionally.” “The app is accessible to anyone who downloads and registers,” Sutton continued. “All of the residents could submit service requests at a time they like. Currently, our work order section has one telephone line and one email address being utilized by our families which often results in busy signals, the need for repeat calling, etc. The use of the application prevents those issues and the frustration that comes along with it and provides the ability to track the request without the need to call DPW again.” Housing and barracks residents will be able to sign up and access the new system at: https:// www.armymaintenance.com

Page 24 by MilitaryinGermany.com Trier is a beautiful, history-rich city with origins that are shrouded in mystery. One legend holds that it was founded by an exiled Assyrian prince 1,300 years before the birth of Christ. What is provable, however, is that Trier is Germany’s oldest city. On a related note, it boasts one of the most incredible collections of Roman ruins in northern Europe. For day trippers during the COVID era (or any era, for that matter), Trier is hard to beat. Located on the banks of the Mosel River, it offers amazing sights, outdoor time, and something for everyone. A day in Trier: A wealth of things to do During ordinary times, Trier is brilliant for shopping, dining, wine tasting and overnight stays. The Hauptmarkt is sprawling and lovely, and university students provide a serious injection of youthful energy. But Trier is still all about the Romans. As you get to know Germany — and Europe — you are constantly and visibly reminded of the impact they had on this continent. Travelers can find Roman ruins in many cities, including Mainz and Koblenz.

Can’t-miss German day trips A-Z: Trier

Photo by Alex Tihonovs / Shutterstock.com

But few offer such a wealth of places, in such well-preserved states, as Trier. The city counts nine UNESCO world heritage sites, most of which are within easy walking distance of downtown. Some Roman highlights include: The Amphitheater. Even if you’ve seen others across Europe, this one is breathtaking. Located

in a natural depression in the hills of Trier, the amphitheater is surrounded by green space and is accessible to the public. The best part: you (or your children) can step on to the arena floor, and let your imagination take you where it will. The Imperial Baths. A wondrous feat of Roman architecture.

Visitors can stroll through and marvel at the excellent design and the cool subterranean passages. Trier also has other ancient baths to offer visitors, most notably the Barbara Baths. The Basilica of Constantine. It’s incredible to think that this beautiful building began construction more than 1,700 years ago,

and that it was used nearly continuously after that. The one thing you have to see: The Black Gate Speaking of Roman highlights, the Black Gate takes the cake. Despite its age, the Gate is a magnificent structure. It reaches several stories up, is accessible to visitors, and makes for great photo ops from almost any angle. Even cooler: it still functions like a real gate. Though it is no longer guarded by heavily armed centurions, visitors can walk through the Gate on their way to the Hauptmarkt. It is as if the city designers got this one right in the second century, and no one – not even the brightest engineering minds in Germany – saw fit to improve it. Getting there By car, Trier is one hour and fifteen minutes from Kaiserslautern, 2 hours from Wiesbaden and just over three hours from Stuttgart. Please check the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.
