by Lt. Col. James D. Reaves 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron commander As another year approaches its end, it is time to reflect on the accomplishments and opportunities we had this past year. I couldn’t help but reflect upon all the amazing “stories from the road” that were shared with me over these past few months. When I took command of the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron in June, I was excited about the challenges of command — yet unaware of the true scope of our squadron’s mission. In these past few months, my appreciation for this unit has quickly grown into real admiration. After a brief whirlwind of introductions and a tour of the squadron, I was able to get out and about to ask our Airmen to tell me their best story since coming to the unit. When the
first story relayed to me began with the statement “so there I was ... ,” I was a bit hesitant about what was coming next. What followed, however, was a story about the Airman overcoming challenges that not only required his technical expertise but also coordination with the Polish air force to use equipment for repairs. Needless to say, I was impressed with this Airman’s story, which made me curious about what other amazing stories there were to be shared. It did not take me long to find out, but I was humbled by the number of similar stories shared by our Airmen. I was also a bit overwhelmed by all the places they had been enhancing our joint partnership capacity. Stories were shared about air frames as different as the C-130J Super Hercules and C-40C and about locations spanning all across Europe. I was shocked that the stories shared with me were equally
expansive and included stops in places such as Mali, Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad, Niger, Uganda, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Algeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Tunisia, Kenya and more. In hearing these stories, I noticed a common theme in the amount of pride that each Airman had in the work they did to keep our aircraft, and our mission, in the air. Some reminisced about having to land on austere runways with limited lighting and facilities, others about their interactions with senior leaders and foreign dignitaries, and others about the times they trained members of an allied military service on aircraft maintenance. After hearing these stories, it would be impossible not to come away with a real admiration and, yes, even a little bit of envy for what these Airmen experienced and accomplished in order to keep our aircraft flying.

Reflecting upon these stories is more important now than it has ever been before. These stories represent our Air Force’s effort to build a shared community and purpose in Europe, Africa and further abroad through shared experiences and a common understanding. In the process of building these stories, we also build relationships that strengthen not only a common purpose but, more importantly, friendships. Our mission may be to “Fly, Fight and Win,” but nothing says we have to do it alone. The similar goals of these allies will be much easier to accomplish with partners who are both willing and able to take on that mission by our side. So as we reflect on the stories we’ve built this year, let’s also start thinking about our resolutions for next year and the new stories we will build in the future. teered more than 250 hours to the different organizations. Command Post Airmen exhibit vigilance, expertise by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When Airmen think of command post, what may come to mind for many of them is the giant voice that can sometimes be heard over a loudspeaker at a base. For the 86th Airlift Wing Command Post at Ramstein, the job consists of much more. “We’re the nerve center of the base,” said Staff Sgt. Erica Johnson, 86th AW/CP senior emergency actions controller. “We help move the mission behind the scenes in ways that you wouldn’t realize or think about, and you shouldn’t have to because we’re there. You can sleep well at night; we’re here for you, the wing and everybody else.” The 86th AW/CP is the largest in U.S. Air Forces in Europe, supporting six bases, five wings, 12 groups, 57 squadrons and 39 geographically separated units. “We’re there 24/7, 365 (days),” Johnson said. “We are thinking about every individual of the 57,000 in our purview. We take that very seriously, working 12-hour shifts, day and night. It’s a crazy schedule, but we’re there because it means something. We are the eyes and ears for this base, for the entire Kaiserslautern Military Community.” To name a few, command post is in charge of the Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and USAFE USAFE, from Page 1
health specialist team medical readiness division specialist. “Showcasing our capabilities for our allies promotes professional cooperation efforts and effective collaboration in both training and operational environments.” The Polish team saw Airmen conduct evaluations, set up a C-17 Globemaster III to transport patients and offload patients. They also toured aeromedical facilities and discussed best practices used by the active-duty, guard
action messages, emergency and crisis notifications, coordination and disaster response, mission management, monitoring and coordination for local and transient aircraft, and monitoring the locations of key personnel and distinguished visitors. Having overseen thousands of missions, sorties and flying hours, the command post works around the clock every day to keep Ramstein safe. The day-to-day operations for command post can vary from one to the next, making it necessary for all personnel to stay sharp. “It’s not always a cookie-cutter situation,” Johnson said. “That’s where you have controller judgment and expertise. There are a lot of eyes and ears out there, and we need to be the focal point and glue that holds this base together. Whatever the situation might be, we need to be able to respond and be the critical link in the chain.” Command post has protocols in place for a multitude of scenarios, and the Airmen working there must meet monthly certification requirements to ensure that, should a situation arise, they are ready to go. “We can run several quick reaction checklists at any given time for anything from an active shooter event to a mission change, cancellation, death or whatever scenario you can think of,” Johnson said. “Our job is to react to those, follow our checklist
and reserve Airmen. “It’s such a great opportunity to be here and see how things work,” said Polish air force 2nd Lt. Krzysztof Romek, Polish aeromedical evacuation doctor. “It’s good to ... share experiences and ideas. We hope that we can put some of (the U.S. Air Force’s) ideas and procedures to use within our aeromedical evacuation team, and make it work more efficiently.” The Polish team also visited the 603rd Air and Space Operations Center, U.S. Transportation Command’s Theater Patient Movement
Requirements Center-East, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight. At the 10th EAEF, Staff Sgt. Jesse Visser, duty controller, gave them insight into a deployed aeromedical mission. “It feels awesome to be able to have this opportunity,” Visser said. “This team has been very inquisitive and enthusiastic. We’re building camaraderie between friendly nations on a personal level when we’re able to take them into our ‘homes’ and show
items, be the voice of the commander, think outside of the box and think on our toes. You have to be on at all times.” The nature of some of the jobs that fall under command post can possibly take a toll on the Airmen who work there. “I feel mostly for the Airmen that are coming in because it’s a huge shock,” Johnson said. “For the more seasoned and senior NCOs, it just rolls off. You have to be able to shut it off, but then at the same time be able to pull it back and reengage with how these Airmen are feeling.” Despite the pressure, some Airmen are thankful to be working in this career field. “I’m so happy I became command post,” said Hotchkiss, who has been working in it for 18 years. “I wouldn’t want to do anything else. It’s terrifying and sad at times, but it’s also really exciting. My favorite part is the aeromedical humanitarian side, bringing back wounded warriors or those who were unfortunately killed downrange. Getting them back to their families and getting those wounded back to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, to me that’s most important.” The 86th AW/CP makes it their priority to remain vigilant and resilient in order to protect Ramstein Airmen, their families and the KMC.

When you wish upon a cargo plane by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen hurriedly slipped on their gloves to shield any exposed skin from the white, chilled needles falling from the colorless, late-November sky. “Wind just hit three knots; it’s looking good,” one said to the other with an optimistic smile. “It should be here soon.” Like a well-rehearsed play, a faint growl arose from above the low-hanging clouds. “There it is!” A military cargo plane emerged, and as it passed, parachutes gracefully descended, possibly containing food, water, or clothing — hope to those below. While this time it was only training bundles that landed for the Airmen, the drop zone at U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr, Germany, is
where the 37th Airlift Squadron goes to practice and evaluate airdrop capabilities to ensure the success of real-world missions. “During the winter, we have to fly higher to avoid any obstruction in the air, which requires a larger drop zone,” said Capt. Eric Liard, 37th AS pilot. “Grafenwoehr is perfect because it has one of the largest drop zones in Germany, which gives pilots and loadmasters flexibility to work on our skills yearround.” Conducting airdrops is a way to drop cargo or paratroopers out the back of an aircraft and parachute into an area. This eliminates the need for a runway since the aircraft does not need to land, which is ideal when a delivery needs to be made in a hostile area. However, providing this capability requires the 37th AS Airmen to be up to date with their certifica-
tions, which can be challenging due to Germany’s flight restrictions. “We are required to fly higher during our low-level operations in Germany compared to the U.S. and other parts of Europe,” said Capt. Bryce Johnson, 37th AS pilot. “We are also unable to train during quiet hours, which are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. weekends and during holidays. Even though our time in air is limited, we have another way to stay current with our training.” Ramstein is home to the only U.S. C-130J Super Hercules simulator in Europe, allowing the Airmen to practice their skills and techniques in a virtual environment. “Having this asset is phenomenal for the C-130 community here,” Johnson said. “It allows us to do additional training we can’t always accomplish in the local area.” Taking advantage of these

Hosted by the Kaiserslautern Military Community First Sergeant Council, Angel Tree is an annual outreach program whose goal is to provide assistance to Airmen and their families throughout the KMC, especially during the holiday season, and continued support through the entire year. “The holiday season can be financially difficult for service members and their families,” said Master Sgt. Allen Lewis, 450th Intelligence
Squadron first sergeant and Angel Tree 2015 chair. “Angel Tree is a way that we can help alleviate some of the stress that comes along with this time of year.” The program can help Airmen who need assistance with unforeseen financial difficulties, securing travel due to medical or emergency crisis, or purchasing gifts for children during the holiday season. “All of the money collected is used toward holiday food drives, toy drives and other initiatives through Operation Warmheart,” said Master Sgt. Kimberly Dixon, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron first sergeant and Angel Tree 2015 cochair. “This year, Operation Warmheart is on pace to give back $30,000 to the KMC.” While first sergeants are primarily responsible for

referring families that may need help, they also rely on individuals who may be closer to the person in need of assistance. “Our job allows us to take the time to get to know our Airmen, so we often know when they have run into a difficult time,” Lewis said.
“But, we can’t catch everything. That’s why we rely on direct supervisors and others in leadership roles to help identify an Airman in need.” At 17 locations throughout the KMC, you can find trees adorned with donation envelopes. Anyone willing to give can take an envelope,
place their donation inside and then insert the sealed envelope into a designated collection box near any one of the trees. “The envelopes have suggested donations, but we accept whatever someone is generous enough to give,” Dixon said. “Any help we can get to make someone’s holidays a little easier is greatly appreciated. A little more joy is always welcomed.” The trees can be found in the KMCC, Ramstein and Vogelweh shoppettes and commissaries, KMC chapels, the Ramstein enlisted and officer clubs, Ramstein’s Southside Subway, the passenger terminal, Vogelweh Post Office, Ramstein Northside Post Office and the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center food court. Donations will be accepted through Jan. 5.
Air Force creates path for family’s legacy by Airman 1st Class Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every person who raises their right hand to serve their country does so for a number of personal reasons. For one family, the Air Force was not only the answer to their needs, but also the beginning of their military family story. Steve Nutt and his wife, Brittany, decided they were ready for a change. “I was working multiple jobs, only getting a couple hours of sleep a night,” Steve said. “My wife was teaching, working in a pharmacy and trying to get into physician assistant school. One tax season, we got a tax bill for about $1,200, and we didn’t have anything. We ended up paying it, but we were eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a few months straight.” For the Nutt family, working hard with little payoff was not the way to live. With advice from her uncle, who was a senior master sergeant at the time, the then young 23-year-old Brittany knew the Air Force was the new obstacle for which she had been searching. “I wanted a change and a new challenge in my life,” Brittany said. “The Air Force offered benefits, a new career field and so many educational aids.” The couple both enlisted in the Air
Force, with Steve graduating from basic military training the week Brittany began her BMT in San Antonio, Texas. “My (technical) school was (also) in San Antonio, so I would meet her at church on Sundays,” Steve said. “I would check up on her and tell her what she was going to be doing during training each week.” Steve went on to become a services specialist, while Brittany became a flight medicine technician. After two years into her first fouryear enlistment, Brittany came across the opportunity to earn her commission to become a nurse practitioner and enhance her growth in the medical field. With a chance to further her career, many things had to be taken into consideration to ensure their home life was stable. Brittany said they mutually decided the best decision for their family was for Steve to get out, while she went into the Airman Education and Commissioning Program for nursing. Steve benefitted from his experience in services by working many miscellaneous jobs, such as mortuary affairs and accounting. He eventually retired as a deputy sheriff out of the Solano County Sheriff’s Office in Fairfield, California. “I loved being in the Air Force and tried to excel in every aspect,” Steve said. “The Air Force and being in the services career field allowed more
flexibility for me in the workforce (in the civilian sector). Moving around, there have always been services jobs available, but the best job I ever had was being a deputy sheriff. I was able to get that job because I had military experience.” Because of the support of the Air Force, Steve and Brittany agreed it enabled them to progress in their careers, in and out of the military. “I knew I wanted to do something with nursing, so I kept pursuing my dreams,” she said. “My husband mentioned the physician assistant program. It allowed me to become a nurse practitioner, which is what I wanted to do.” Today, Brittany is now Maj. Brittany Nutt. With 19 years of service, she has earned a second bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree and, in just 22 months alone, a doctorate. She is currently serving as a women’s health nurse practitioner with the 86th Medical Squadron. The Nutts’ decisions not only shaped their lives but, unknowingly, also their children’s lives and choices. With the military influence from her parents, their eldest, Kiersten, decided to follow in their footsteps and join the Air Force as well. “Being a recent high school graduate, my parents and I had done a lot of talking about my future,” Kiersten said. “Enlisting in the military is a
good way to dip my toes into the pool of adulthood. Aside from that, it’s a very stable career path and no matter what field I go into, I know I’ll be well-trained.” Kiersten said a benefit to growing up in a military family was learning adaptability to new environments due to moving every two to three years. In 12 years of schooling, Kiersten enrolled in nine different schools and learned to develop friendships wherever she went. Kiersten decided to follow the path her parents had set because of the vast educational opportunities the Air Force affords. Airmen are not always guaranteed their first career choice upon their enlistment. Kiersten faced a similar circumstance that did not align with her initial choice, though she said she keeps a positive attitude for her future career. “I wanted to go more into the direction of the (American Forces Network), but I signed a contract for (radio frequency) transmissions,” Kiersten said. “I’m the type of person who sees the glass as 100 percent full.” Brittany had the opportunity to swear in her daughter for the first time before she left for BMT. The Nutts have set an example, allowing Kiersten to follow their military legacy and add her own chapters to her family’s military story.

Strategic Sourcing: Save big bucks through JOSE
When shopping personally, many people seek ways to save money. They may use coupons, compare vendors’ prices or buy in bulk to receive discounts. The military also looks for ways to save money while shopping, and the Joint Office Supplies in Europe program, referred to as JOSE, has the capability to possibly save the Department of Defense more than $1 million per year. This is expected to happen as the program aims to revamp how U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s and U.S. Army in Europe’s Government Purchase Card cardholders buy office supplies without taking advantage of discounts. The idea for the program’s creation began when service component contracting offices reviewed the fiscal year 2014 office supply purchases. “The services executed repetitive office supply purchases without receiving any discount,” said Marianne Seufert, Air Force Installation Contracting Activity and USAFE Strategic Sourcing Chief. During the past year, the 1,600 GPC cardholders in USAFE bought office supplies from more than 400 different vendors, effectively negating any benefits that would normally come from bulk purchases. According to Peter Deibert, 409th Contracting Support Brigade procurement analyst and acquisition planner, USAREUR’s approximate 900 GPCs were similarly spread out, making more than 9,000 purchases through 380 vendors.
After looking at their numbers, both organizations realized they spent approximately $13 million over nearly 20,000 purchases, again with no discount realized because of the lack of buying power leverage. With approval from U.S. Air Force Col. Ronnie Doud, AFICA director, and Paul Michaels, 409th CSB, a joint team studied the potential benefits of a European-wide contract to buy office supplies. “We advertised to global industry and invited business partners to an Industry Day at Ramstein Air Base,” Seufert said. “We need an acquisition solution at the strategic level in Europe.” At the event, the joint team gathered information from the industry experts to determine how to combine customer needs, organizational goals and market conditions to get the best product and service at the best value. From the information gathered, the team planned a future strategy to move both USAFE and USAREUR from buying tactically to strategically, which formed the foundation of JOSE. The new concept provides online ordering at discounted prices and delivery within three business days directly to the customer. Since the new method of purchasing office supplies will be different from what has been done before, the GPC programs are scheduled to inform cardholders by email once JOSE is fully running, and tailor training to instruct cardholders on the new process. The Strategic Sourcing team expects the contract to be awarded in March and companies to have their websites tailored to the JOSE program by May.

2 pounds of potatoes, raw, peeled and grated 2 onions peeled and grated 2 eggs 1 tablespoons salt 1 or 2 tablespoons of potato or corn starch ½ teaspoon ground white pepper A small sprinkle of nutmeg (less than ¼ teaspoon) 1 tablespoon ghee per pan for frying 1 cup diced bacon, if you desire
Preparation
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Your dough needs to be the consistency of a thick pancake batter. If the potatoes have extra water in them, the water will rise to the top of the batter. Take a spoon and scoop that additional water off the top of the dough. To make sure the pancakes do not fall apart, add an additional 1-2 tablespoons of starch. Heat a pan with ghee. Start at high heat to get the fat hot, then reduce to a high medium heat for cooking the pancakes. Take 3 tablespoons of dough and form a little pancake out of it. Use a large skillet and put 3 pancakes in at a time. Let it cook on one side until it has a nice crust underneath, approximately 3 minutes. Then flip it. Cook another 3 minutes and you have a nice potato pancake.
This is the spicy version for people who want a little meat in the pancake. If you would like it sweeter, you can leave out the meat and add a bit of sugar to the dough. Also, reduce the salt and pepper. Then you have a nice treat to add applesauce or powdered sugar for the sweet tooth crowd.
Ingredients Gluehwein
1 bottle of red wine, medium dry 1 whole orange, washed under hot water ½ lemon, washed under hot water 1 stick of cinnamon 1-2 spoons of sugar 8 oz of orange juice 1 teaspoon of lime juice 6-8 whole cloves 1 anise
Preparation
Slice the orange in half. Then cut the half in small slices, with the peel on. Cut the lemon in small slices as well, with the peel. Use a medium size pot. Put the spices and juices in the pot with the red wine. Add sliced fruit. Let it simmer for 20-25 minutes. Before serving, remove the cinnamon stick and whole anise. When serving the Gluehwein, put an orange and a lemon slice in each cup. Prost!

Competition seeks command’s top career counselor Story and photo by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Retention noncommissioned officers and career counselors normally focus their energies on retaining the best. But “re-up” NCOs across the 21st Theater Sustainment Command strove to be the best during a Retention NCO and Career Counselor of the Year competition conducted in November and early December. Winners earned command bragging rights and an opportunity to compete at the U.S. Army Europe board later this month in Wiesbaden. The event is an individual competition; but success requires strong leadership and a team effort. The TSC command sergeant major, who personally presided over the event, emphasized the role of NCO leadership in developing and preparing

the president of the boards. “But once they step up, it is their unit supervisor and their sergeant major’s job to assure that he or she is completely prepared for this competition.” The competition included a written exam covering a variety of general and specialized topics and the Army Physical Fitness Test. It culminated in a competitive board held at the main command retention hub at TSC headquarters on Panzer Kaserne. Candidates needed to demonstrate not only general military knowledge and leadership qualities, but exceptional knowledge of and proficiency in their career specialty. The board itself began like any other, with the candidate knocking at the door, entering the room and announcing his or her presence to the board. Garrison INFO-X provides feedback to community Story and photo by Stefan Alford U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs There were a lot of questions from the community at the first U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Information Exchange Nov. 24 at the KMC Onstage on Kleber Kaserne. This promoted an additional question of “Can we get more time for questions and answers?” There were so many questions from the audience and via Facebook that they couldn’t all be answered in the closing 10 minutes allotted at the end of the live AFN radio and web stream broadcast of the 50-minute program. “We listened to what our audience said and we’ve changed things up a bit for the second INFO-X,” said Col. G. Shawn Wells Jr., garrison commander, referring to the next iteration of the townhall style forum Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. at the same location. “Instead of six panel members providing current information on community topics, we’ll have three or four. And, instead of five minutes each, they’ll get two to three minutes,” Wells explained. “That will ensure we have plenty of time in the second half of the program to address the issues our community members want to ask us about.” INFO-X is the garrison’s new initiative to “share information and exchange ideas about improving our community,” Wells said, adding that it’s also an evolving program geared toward the audience needs, hence the prompt format adjustment to better meet those needs. with an endorsement from Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, Commander, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, who addressed the audience of Soldiers, civilians and family members to open the program. “This is about direct contact between the community and the garrison team, and maximizing the opportunities that exist within the garrison for our Soldiers, our families, our civilians and our whole workforce,” Gamble said. “We need feedback from the community. If some of the things (we do) aren’t working for you, and if we need to tweak them, then we’ll tweak them. If we need to replace them with something else, then we’ll replace them with something else. This is about making our community better.” That sentiment was echoed by Wells, who added, “This is an opportunity for community members to voice their concerns and get the answers from me and my command team face-to-face. In addition to hearing what the community has to say, it’s an opportunity for us to update folks on the hot-topic items within
the garrison.” Those topics included force protection and security in the wake of the Paris
terrorist attacks provided by the Director of Emergency Services; upcoming holiday events offered through
Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation; and planned construction projects through the public works division. Information on new programs were also shared by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, the USO and the Army Family Action Plan. INFO-X also serves as the garrison’s forum to take AFAP submissions on quality-of-life issues and to provide status updates of current submissions. In addition to the AFAP updates, the Dec. 18 program features current information on safety and security, financial readiness, holiday worship and fellowship and, of course, more time for questions.

the competitor’s uniform, literally from head to toe. Are the medals and decorations straight? Does their uniform meet or exceed standards? Do the pant legs hang too high or low? Uniform inspection is just the beginning. Each candidate must be able to recite both the NCO and Soldier’s creeds, and they must do so “loud and proud.” “Don’t be nervous when you come in front this or any other board,” Rhoades told nervous candidates. “Be proud and confident that you are here – that you have stepped up and put yourselves in front of leaders.” Some of the most distinguished leaders in the command and even the region asked an array of questions pertaining to general military topics, career-specific knowledge and leadership during the board. The complexities and nuances of retention regulations, policies and updates amid a continuously evolving Army challenge even the most seasoned of career field leaders. Changing both force structure and priorities mean retention NCOs and career counselors must constantly incorporate new information and new guidance into their mission. Board members asked about topics ranging from Reserve Component issues and reenlistment incentives to the Soldier for Life program and the impact of profiles and other limitations on reenlistment options. Each candidate must demonstrate knowledge as retention subject matter experts, Rhoades said, but demonstrating leadership is just as important. “We are looking at the whole soldier concept,” Rhoades said. “Leadership is an important part of any board. If you have a solid leadership basis, you can accomplish anything.” The competition ultimately determined who would represent the TSC at the upcoming USAREUR contest, scheduled for Dec. 14 to 16. Just as importantly, it served as an important developmental tool for reenlistment NCOs, career counselors, leaders and even organizations. Rhoades offered wise counsel to participants and leaders alike. “Always take the initiative to distinguish yourselves among your peers,” Rhoades said. “This is a small career field. It is very important to compete at any opportunity for any board like this. It is imperative that the Soldier’s supervisor and organization be very involved in the competition process; there’s a reason the supervisors are in the room during the Soldier’s turn in front of the board.”

TSC holds tree lighting ceremony

A 21st Theater Sustainment Command tree lighting ceremony was held Dec. 3 at Panzer Field on Panser Kaserne. Instrumental and choral performances from local schoolchildren and brief motivational remarks by Maj. Gen. Duane Gamble, the TSC commanding general, preceded the illumination of the command Christmas tree by three eager young volunteers. An enthusiastic crowd of TSC Soldiers, civilians, elves, reindeer and family members converged on the command parade field, which was converted into a "Christmas Village" for the ceremony. Other celebrity appearances included Santa Claus, whose arrival in a screaming fire engine immediately attracted dozens of young fans. Claus listened attentively to TSC children's gift wishes and posed for pictures in a nearby heated tent. Soldiers from the 21st Special Troops Battalion operated the village, spread good cheer, and distributed hot chocolate, cookies and candy canes to revelers. Around two dozen Soldiers, civilians and family members also recorded holiday greetings for hometowns and European communities.

US Military served by unique news channel by George A. Smith American Forces Network Public Affairs Imagine all the hyper-competitive U.S. TV news networks, including those with vastly different political perspectives, agreeing to donate their shows free of charge and share airtime with rivals. That’s exactly what U.S. commercial news organizations do for America’s most deserving audience. They donate their shows to the American Forces Network so U.S. military and Department of Defense civilian personnel serving overseas can watch U.S. stateside coverage on the AFN|news channel while serving their country overseas. AFN|news Programmer Mike Roberts has strong feelings about what AFN does. “I think the channel’s identity goes beyond hav-
ing the best shows from the top networks and airing breaking news in real time from around the world. Sure, we do those things. But to me, personally, the mission is to maintain our viewers’ connection to what I like to call ‘the American conversation,’” Roberts said. Roberts took to social media to interact with the overseas audience about AFN|news during a live social media chat earlier this week. He explained that while the most popular news programs in America are the NBC, ABC and CBS weekday newscasts, with many times the average all-day viewership of cable news channels, 90 minutes of traditional news isn’t enough to fill a 24-hour channel. That’s why AFN|news relies heavily on a proportional mix from cable news providers such as Fox News Channel, CNN and MSNBC to fill the rest of the day. AFN|news is a dynamic TV service. Roberts said
while it carries 94 percent of the most popular U.S. news shows, it continually goes to breaking news. Overall, 61 percent of programming airs live simultaneously over more than 20 time zones. Before joining AFN on Valentine’s Day of 2011, Roberts reported on the news extensively in his more than 20 years with CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN affiliates. News is as much a part of him as his right hand. He feels strongly about putting quality shows on the air with different viewpoints. “Our charter specifically states that our audience has a right of access to diverse topics and contrasting perspectives, and our job is to create that access. We will never censor or edit,” Roberts said. He has his own way of describing AFN|news’ unique makeup. “When people ask me what AFN|news is, here’s what I tell them: it’s the home of your right to know,” Roberts explained.

Buying, selling used cars in Germany Are you thinking about buying a used car downtown, or are you about to sell your car to a fellow service member? Then you might be interested to know that in both cases, the sale and purchase is subject to German law. Therefore, it is good to know what host nation laws say on the subject of warranties and defects. Even though verbal contracts are valid and fully enforceable in Germany, only a written agreement enables you to adequately prove the terms of the agreement and clarify each other’s obliga-
tions. All terms should be reduced to writing and signed by the parties because written contracts are presumed to be correct, complete and without binding oral or side agreements. The buyer should have the car thoroughly checked and tested before the sale is concluded. The car should be inspected by a trustworthy, independent third party such as a garage. Christmas market in forest offers organic products, trees

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The forestry information center House of Sustainability, located at Johanniskreuzer Strasse 1, 67705 Trippstadt, invites visitors to a “Romantic Christmas in the forest� from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. A unique Christmas market will be set up in the midst of forest scenery, surrounded by torches and campfires. More than 70 stands will form an organic market highlighting the Christmas tree from the forest master, venison from the local forest, and arts and crafts made of wood and other natural materials. Vendors will offer spicy food delicacies such as trout, venison, chestnut bratwurst, mushrooms, potato dumplings, goat cheese and pea soup. Sweet treats include crepes, Christmas cookies and chocolate products. There also will be vendors selling arts and crafts items typical for the region of the biosphere reserve of Palatinate Forest-North Vosges. Products include wooden jewelry, leather purses, brooms, sandstone sculptures, woolen items, candles, pottery and wooden nativity scenes.

Health Do not let sodium weigh you down this holiday season
by Marissa Pierce, CFT Contributing writer While sodium is a necessary component of a balanced diet, too much can lead to high blood pressure and heart problems. Having too high of a salt intake can also lead to water retention, which causes bloating. Your body attempts to maintain a certain salt to water ratio, similar to the ratio in the ocean, and the higher the salt intake, the more your body will try to hang on to water. The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg or less of sodium per day. However, the average sodium intake is 3,400 mg per day. Just 400 mg will cause your body to retain four cups of water, which is approximately two pounds. It is important to drink plenty of water to flush out excess sodium. The average person eats quite a bit more than normal during the holiday
season. And to make matters worse, a lot of this food is high in sodium. Below is a list of some of the worst culprits with a high daily value of sodium per serving: • Ham, 50% • One bouillon cube for stock soup, 50% • Canned vegetables, 22% to 54% • Gravy, 18% to 24% • Hot chocolate, 35% • Bread, 20% • Cheese, 18% to 35% Since there will probably be a lot of sodium present in the holiday spread, let’s look at some ways to reduce our intake. • Cook as much as you can yourself. Most of the time, sodium content can be reduced by making homemade recipes instead of buying premade items. For example, since bread is high in sodium, stuffing is as well. However, if you make your own stuffing from home-
made cornbread the sodium content will be much lower. • Do not add extra salt. Although it’s standard to reach for the salt and pepper for seasoning while cooking or at the table, it is likely not necessary. Start adding less salt than normal to your dishes until you add no salt at all. If you add in other spices, you won’t notice the lack of added salt in most foods. • Avoid canned food. During the canning process, a lot of salt is added to preserve flavor. If possible, avoid canned items. This is fairly easy to do with vegetables by buying them fresh or frozen. For soups, look for low or no sodium varieties. • Portion control. In general, this is a good rule of thumb for keeping off unwanted holiday pounds and a simple way to cut down your sodium intake. Enjoy that ham, but consider only having half a slice.
• Be careful of sauces. Sauces, gravies and glazes are all common during the holidays. Essentially, you are just pouring more salt onto already salt-infused food. While it might be delicious to smother everything in gravy, be aware of how much you are spooning on. • Drink plenty of water. During the holidays, most people are downing plenty of hot chocolate, eggnog, beer, wine and liquor. Do not forget to intermittently drink water to stay hydrated and rid your body of the extra sodium. While a lot of holiday food is high in sodium, there are many ways to minimize its effects. By consciously taking these extra steps, you will be taking care of your health and keeping off a few extra pounds. Enjoy your holiday goodies, just do so wisely.
