Germany’s National Parks: Black Forest National Park The Black Forest is world-famous, for good reason. The thickly wooded, mountainous terrain has a powerful mystique that goes far beyond its cuckoo-clock reputation. It is also home to one of Germany’s most beautiful national parks, which offers four-season hikes, diverse animal life, waterfalls, lakes, and day trips to fantastic nearby towns. COMMENTARY: Arctic Circle exploration and beyond Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Norman Enriquez American Forces Network Kaiserslautern Preface “I bet you never imagined the Air Force would bring you here.” On several occasions, this or something very similar was said to me during a recent TDY I was on. And they were right. In mid-August, I left for a TDY that most service members, let alone Airmen, would have done anything for. The mission was to conduct public affairs support for the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20). This may not mean much unless you know that the Healy is designed to conduct research in the polar regions of the world. More specifically, the Healy is an icebreaker that deploys to the Arctic Circle usually once a year. During the TDY, another American Forces Network broadcaster and I did public affairs coverage due to a shortage of public affairs Coast Guardsmen. As a public affairs Airman stationed at AFN Kaiserslautern, my normal duties usually consist of covering things like events or exercises in the area in and around Ramstein Air Base, but AFN Europe’s Regional Media Center needed a broadcaster to fill in and I jumped at the opportunity. At sea The number one question I am asked since returning is, “Did you get seasick?” The short answer is yes, but only once.

Able Chef Jack Osborne, Royal New Zealand Navy, prepares food on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB 20) in the Arctic Ocean, Sep. 6. USCGC Healy trains alongside allied and partnered maritime forces helping the U.S. maintain relationships and build the trust essential for ensuring regional security.

The other broadcaster and I joined the trip in Kodiak, Alaska. The voyage took us up the Bering Strait, then we turned west and made the long trek over Russia to Tromso, Norway, where we had a short stop, then to Copenhagen, Denmark, for another stop, and finally we departed the ship in Reykjavik, Iceland. Being in the Air Force, I never expected to be at sea for any amount of time, but I did thoroughly enjoy

the roughly two months. The sea above the Arctic Circle was mostly calm with the water having a glassy haze to it some days. When we were conducting ice breaking operations, the ship would vibrate intensely. But there was one particular day later into the voyage when we were heading south along the coast of Norway where I became very seasick, however a quick trip to the ship’s doctor had me medicated and feeling better.

U.S Coast Guardsmen aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB 20) listens to a presentation about the Norwegian Coast Guard, while the cutter is underway in the Arctic Ocean, Sep. 15. The Healy’s deployment to the Arctic Ocean represents the deepening of our cooperation and strengthens the defense of the Arctic and Nordic regions.

That being said, the camaraderie on the ship really made the time pass a lot faster. From the different events that were hosted by the ship to just sitting in the lounges chatting with the scientist or crewmembers aboard, it helped me become interested and engaged in the operations that were being conducted onboard. Scandinavia (Tromso, Copenhagen, Reykjavik) The Norwegian Coast Guard vessel, Svalbard, accompanied us into our first port in Tromso, Norway. Tromso sits just above the Arctic Circle and is considered a major cultural hub. It is a popular destination for those seeking the northern lights, though unfortunately, I did not see them (or any during my month in the Arctic Circle). Other activities such as whale-watching and puffin spotting are also popular. Overall, Tromso was a beautiful city with its classic-looking wooden houses and pointed Arctic Cathedral, all set against a snow-capped mountainous backdrop. After we sailed down the western side of Norway, we cut east toward Copenhagen. I loved exploring the narrow streets that envelop the Copenhagen downtown area. A highlight for me was browsing through the works at the National Gallery of Denmark, as well as walking through the Botanical Garden which included a sprawling greenhouse that includ-

ed plants from all over the globe. Something that stuck with me is walking from the frigid outdoor air into the humid and warm tree house and walking up the sixteen-metertall, cast-iron spiral staircase in the Palm House. We reached our final destination in the journey after turning northwest from Copenhagen. The trek to Reykjavik was by far the roughest part of the entire trip. This is when I had to see the ship’s doctor to get some seasickness meds. Once we arrived, however, Reykjavik was by far the most picturesque of the all the stops I made. Wandering the streets of Reykjavik, there was no shortage of sights to behold. The Hallgrimskirkja, a massive church that sits in the center of Reykjavik, is known for its distinctive spire and architecture which has a similar appearance to the hexagonal basalt columns that form naturally in Iceland. The mountain ranges surrounding the city were likewise breathtaking. Looking across the bay to Mount Esja was an amazing way to watch how the sunset tints the landscape’s various shades of orange and pink. I consider myself incredibly lucky that the American Forces Network gave me the opportunity to go on this TDY and get to experience the High North with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy. The sea, the ice, the countries and the people were all incredible and I will never forget the memories I made on this trip.

All about Passports & Traveling During the holiday season, the Ramstein Passport Facility is seeing an increase in expedited or emergency passport requests due to expired or lost passports. This can be a stressful and frustrating experience especially when you have plans to get back home for the holidays or visit foreign countries for tourism. We’ve prepared some simple rules and guidance to help minimize your stress level when traveling, not only during the holidays.

authorized for leisure travel; they are only authorized for official travel and/or travel between the U.S. and your sponsor’s country of assignment (i.e. Germany). You will need to apply for a tourist passport if you plan to visit other foreign countries. Incidental travel on a no-fee passport is authorized as long as the country being visited accepts the no-fee passport for entry.

Rule #1: Do not make any travel plans or book a flight without first checking the validity of your passport. The same rule applies while awaiting issuance or renewal of your passport. Anything can happen and we advise that you wait until you actually hold your passport in your hands before making travel plans. Rule #2: Research entry, passport and visa requirements when traveling to foreign countries. The Foreign Clearance Guide not only provides entry requirements for official travel, but also for leisure travel. Plan ahead! Visa processing times may vary, and you can’t rush a foreign government to expedite your visa. You may also go to Traveler's Checklist (state.gov) to find out more about international travel and specific country requirements. Rule #3: No-fee passports are not

When to Renew your Passport: We recommend renewing your tourist passport at least 6 months prior to the expiration date. However, depending on the country you plan to visit, you may need to renew it 9 to 12 months prior to the expiration date. A 6-month passport validity rule is a common entry requirement for many countries and may start from the date of entry, the date of departure, or the date of visa expiration, depending on the country. This rule is

meant to ensure that travelers have a valid passport for the duration of their trip and to avoid immigration issues. Expedited Passport Services: There are no expedited services of tourist passports available in the overseas area, although overseas processing normally takes less time than it does when applying for routine processing in the United States. Current routine processing times for a tourist passport are 6 to 8 weeks.

National Passport Center in the U.S. and do not typically utilize Consular passport services unless it’s an emergency or to process a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. Please understand that the Consulates are not staffed to handle the increased workload associated with processing tourist passport applications for DOD-affiliated personnel assigned to Germany. Their primary customers are U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Germany under German immigration rules and laws.

Emergency Passport Services: All emergency passport services provided by the Consulate must be coordinated through your servicing military passport facility. You must provide proof of the emergency (Red Cross message etc.). The military passport facility will then coordinate with the Consular Officer to obtain approval of emergency processing of your application. Your application will either be hand-carried to the Consulate during our weekly courier trip, or we will obtain a control number for you to visit the Consulate yourself. DOD ID card holders can only visit the Consulate for service if we provide a control number and appointment date/time to them. If not sure, please contact our office to determine if you qualify for an emergency passport. U.S. Consular Services for DOD ID Card Holders Assigned to Germany: Please be advised that the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulates in Germany are not authorized to accept applications for passports or consular reports of birth abroad from USEUCOM personnel and their dependents per DODM 1000.21 and USAFEI 36-3101. All DOD ID card holders will be turned away at the Consulate because they must visit their servicing military passport facility for service. Military passport facilities located in Germany are processing DOD ID card holders’ passport applications through the

Please go to Appointment Plus to schedule an appointment with the Ramstein Passport Facility if you need to apply for a tourist or no-fee passport. Appointments for tourist passports are available every Tuesday and Thursday and appointments for no-fee passports are available every Monday and Friday. You may also come in as a walk-in between 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on those days. “Operation Good Cheer” revived, brings joy to American Soldiers in Germany for Christmas by Mary Del Rosario U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz In a heartwarming revival, the “Operation Good Cheer” program of 2023 marks a successful reactivation after a hiatus since 2019, bringing together single American Soldiers with German host families for Christmas festivities. Organizer Bernd Mai, overseeing the program since 1983, highlighted the historical significance, tracing its roots back to the 1970s, with approximately 1,100 Soldiers placed with families over the years. Some families have accommodated multiple Soldiers, exemplified by Klaus and Angelika Hettrich from Sensweiler, participating continuously since 1993, except during pauses due

to service member deployments or the Covid-19 pandemic.

Expressing gratitude, Baumholder Military Community Deputy Garrison Manager Jae Kim honored the Hettriches with a book and a Baumholder pin as a token of appreciation, commending the program. Kim praised the thriving U.S. community in Baumholder, emphasizing the significance of reactivating this Christmas tradition. Lt. Col. Jeffrey Keenan, commander of the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, encouraged young

Soldiers during the inaugural gathering with host families to share their experiences and urged them to explore Germany, fostering friendships and cultural exchanges. He emphasized the uniqueness of Baumholder compared to his previous station in Kaiserslautern, underscoring the integration of Germans and Americans in Baumholder. Baumholder District Mayor Bernd Alsfasser echoed Keenan’s sentiments, attending the meeting to express gratitude to the families for their involve-

ment, affirming the deep-rooted German-American friendship within Baumholder. Each family received a Baumholder pin as a token of appreciation. At the initial meeting between the Germans and Americans, conversations flowed freely as they discussed Christmas plans. Some Soldiers received invitations for Christmas Eve, while others were invited for Christmas Day or Boxing Day, showcasing the flexibility of the program to accommodate individual preferences. Mai stressed the importance of Soldiers experiencing a typical German Christmas, emphasizing that no special arrangements were required for the Americans. The focus remained on fostering cultural exchange and understanding. With optimism for the future, Kim anticipated the program’s growth in 2024, urging participants to share their positive experiences with their colleagues. As Soldiers prepare to celebrate the holidays with their newfound German families, “Operation Good Cheer” continues to signify the enduring bond between nations during the festive season.

Chief Master Sgt. David A. Flosi named 20th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Chief Master Sgt. David A. Flosi was selected Dec. 11 to be the 20th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, adding a deeply experienced and proven Airman to the top echelon of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin’s emerging leadership team. In announcing the selection, Allvin noted Flosi’s experience, leadership and achievements across his Air Force career and said Flosi brings qualities to the job that are especially important when the Air Force is navigating one of the most challenging moments in its history. “Our Airmen deserve the best leaders possible — and that’s Chief Flosi,” Allvin said. “He is a phenomenal leader and wingman who will empower our Total Force. His unique experiences, attitude and commitment will prove essential as we re-optimize our force for Great Power Competition. I am excited to work with him as we follow through on our efforts to meet today’s pacing challenge.” Flosi emerged as the clear choice from a group of the most highly respected, experienced graduated command chief master sergeants from across the Air Force’s global operations, officials said. These leaders were selected based on breadth of experience, recommendations from senior commanders and performance across each candidate’s Air Force career. “I’m honored and humbled to represent all Airmen as your 20th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force,” Chief Master Sgt. David A. Flosi said. “We are serving at a time of great consequence where success hinges on our ability to optimize this team toward the changing character of war. I’m excited to serve the Total Force supporting the SECAF and CSAF’s priorities. We have heard the call for action

from General Allvin … it is time to follow through!” With Flosi’s selection, the current Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, JoAnne S. Bass, will soon close out her tenure as the service’s highest ranking noncommissioned leader. Bass has been in the job since August 2020. She was the first woman in Air Force history to be named CMSAF, and the first woman in Department of Defense history to serve as a service-level Senior Enlisted Advisor. “Chief Flosi is an incredibly strong leader who has proven himself in every role at every level,” Bass said. “I have no doubt he will continue building and developing our Air Force to be the future force our nation needs to compete, deter and win in any domain.” Department of the Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall offered praise and his endorsement, as well. “The Department of the Air Force relies on our Senior Enlisted Advisors to represent the needs and perspectives of all our enlisted Airmen and Guardians, the majority of our force,” Kendall said. “I have high confidence that Chief Flosi will build upon the great example provided by his predecessors and serve with distinction as our twentieth Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.” Flosi moves into his new job from Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where he serves as the command chief master sergeant. That role is similar in many respects to the role he will assume at the Pentagon. At Materiel Command he is the senior enlisted leader and the primary advisor to the commander on all matters regarding the readiness, training, professional development and effective utilization of the command’s 89,000 total force Airmen.

Chief Master Sgt. David A. Flosi was selected to be the 20th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

Prior to his tour at WrightPatterson AFB, Flosi served as the command chief master sergeant at the Air Force’s Sustainment Center at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. Flosi began his Air Force career in 1996 as a nuclear weapons specialist. That focus expanded over the years to include various leadership duties in conventional and nuclear munitions, as well as missile operations, program management and test and contingency operations.

Like his predecessor, Flosi has a deployment history, including tours in support of operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel. Also, like previous CMSAFs, Flosi will be the public face for Air Force personnel to those in all levels of government. He will be a personal adviser to Allvin and other senior leaders, both military and civilian, and will be expected to provide

insight on issues regarding the welfare, readiness, morale and proper utilization and progress of the Air Force’s entire cadre of Airmen. Through his leadership, Flosi will provide direction for the Total Force and will represent the interests of all Airmen. A link to Chief Master Sgt. David A. 6966th Transportation Truck Terminal award, farewell ceremony

Helmut Kraemer, superintendent, 6966th Transportation Truck Terminal, gives remarks at the 6966th TTT farewell and award ceremony at the Clocktower Cafe, Kleber Kaserne, Dec. 11. The farewell and award ceremony was held to present multiple employees on their achievements over their careers, ranging from miles driven, length of service, and retirement.

Story and photos by Spc. Samuel Signor 21st Theater Sustainment Command The 6966th Transportation Truck Terminal held an award and farewell ceremony on Dec. 11 at the Clock Tower Cafe, Kleber Kaserne. During the ceremony, 13 local national employees were presented with Length of Service certificates representing over 420 years of dedicated and professional service to the U.S. Army. Two drivers were also recognized for accident-free driving, one being recognized for 500,000 miles and one for 750,000 miles.

Operational since 1953, the 6966th TTT, part of the Theater Logistics Support Center - Europe and Africa, employs 265 personnel and has been working seamlessly with the U.S. Army to transport and deliver any of the Army’s needs. The unit is responsible for transporting mail, general cargo, HAZMAT, heavy equipment, and handle tow missions. Their missions take them throughout most of Europe and to locations as far as Africa. According to Helmut Kraemer, 6966th TTT superintendent, it’s important for their workforce to be recognized for their dedicated service to the U.S. Army. “We’re proud

to have these guys in my unit,” said Kramer. As head of the overall operations, Kraemer takes pride in his employees’ success and outstanding safety record. Their civilian support group has the lowest accident rate in the Army, with an accident rate of 0.29 percent per 1 million miles driven. “It’s very important to recognize their efforts on every mission, whether it is a local run or long distances that take them cross-border, especially during high OPTEMPO, and we have to publicly appreciate them for their effort to the unit and the mission.” said Kraemer. Of 265 employees, approximately 165 are professional and cross-trained drivers who have a combined average of 3.7 million miles during the past three years.

Their mission is to support military exercises, deployment operations, and humanitarian aid support with a tailored vehicle fleet ranging from small cargo vans and 40-ton trucks to heavy equipment transporters. “The everyday performance of a vehicle operator is not an easy task considering the traffic density in Europe,” said Eckhart Rank, motor transportation supervisor. “Recognizing the work of a vehicle operator is essential for their motivation and the unit’s reputation.” Recognizing the professionalism and skills of the 6966th’s members is important for the unit’s morale and the younger employees’ plans for the future, knowing that they will also receive recognition for jobs well done. “Every human being needs

some recognition, right,” said Stefan Keller, motor vehicle operator. “I’m glad we started to celebrate the anniversaries again. It allows us to get some recognition from our supervisors and previously it had been lost in the past a bit, so I’m very glad it’s started again.” As general manager of Theater Logistics Support Center - Europe and Africa, Helmut Haufe is honored to recognize his employees for their hard work and dedication. “It makes me extremely proud to see my employees being recognized for excellence over a span of five up to 45 years of service,” said Haufe. “It says a lot about the organization and the U.S. Army as an employer. It obviously is an indication that it works for both sides, otherwise, it would not have lasted as long as it has.”

Employees from the 6966th Transportation Truck Terminal pose with Helmut Haufe, general manager, Theater Logistics Support Center - Europe and Africa, after being presented with length of service awards during the 6966th TTT farewell and award ceremony at the Clocktower Cafe, Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Dec. 11. The employees were awarded LoS awards for their 35-years of service to the 6966th TTT.

by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Sgt. 1st Class Terysa King takes one for the team, as she answers questions from a specialist with a video camera. King, who is 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Public Affairs operations noncommissioned officer, is infinitely more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it. But she agreed to the interview because it was a good training opportunity for her junior soldier, and her most recent mission made international headlines. Describing how she ended up sharing pea soup and conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was a good plug for the profession she loves — U.S. Army public affairs. King, who hails from Norfolk, Virginia, has bachelor’s degree in journalism and is currently working on a master’s degree in marketing. She began her Army career 15 years ago to pursue education and gain real-world experience. “I originally joined the Army to pay for college,” said King. Growing up as a self-described “Navy brat” nurtured a passion for adventure, and she believed a career in the Army would also help her see the world. She has not been disappointed. In addition to being stationed in various U.S. states, including Georgia, North Carolina and Maryland, King was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her overseas assignments include Italy, Korea and Germany, and missions have taken her to Kenya,

Botswana, Tanzania and multiple countries in Europe including Romania, Slovenia, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands. She is currently stationed at 21st TSC headquarters in Kaiserslautern, where she works with public affairs professionals from ally and partner countries, coordinating and supporting media events and coverage of joint exercises and missions. In October, she worked with the German Bundeswehr to support an all-day capabilities demonstration highlighting interoperability between German and U.S. Soldiers for Scholz and German media. When it was time for lunch, the Bundeswehr asked King to “take a picture” with Scholz. “I was not expecting to be asked to sit next to him,” said King. “Because as public affairs I’m working behind the scenes. I’m used to being behind the camera. So, when they told me, ‘You are going to have lunch with the German chancellor and take pictures,’ I was like, ‘Cool.’ “Then I sit down, and he comes around, and sits right next to me. And then I look up and there’s all these cameras in front of me.” King said the Chancellor sensed her surprise and put her at ease right away. “In order to break the tension, he said, ‘Just pretend they’re not there.’ That made everybody a little bit more comfortable. I can honestly say that it was one of the coolest things I’ve experienced so far being here and probably in my entire military career, because how

often do you get the chance to sit with someone of that importance? To literally break bread with him and eat a traditional German meal with him. I can’t think of many other vocations where you get that opportunity,” said King. King’s softspoken nature is an asset in her work, putting interview subjects at ease and allowing her to document missions with minimum notice — ensuring Soldiers are focused on their mission and not distracted by her presence. According to King, her mission, as a public affairs specialist, is to tell the Army story by showcasing her fellow Soldiers. “It helps the world see the bigger picture of what we do,” said King. “And it’s also a morale boost. When I take pictures of other Soldiers, and they’re interacting with each other and our allies and our partners, I see them light up and it makes all the hard work that we do worth it. It is great seeing the interoperability between the U.S. Army and our partners.” King said her decision to join the Army was the best decision she has ever made. She would tell anyone who is interested in joining the Army or pursuing a public affairs career to prepare to be challenged. “You’ll be pushed out of your comfort zone,” said King. “But it’s definitely worth it.” Making international headlines and being the subject of a Soldier spotlight was definitely out of King’s comfort zone. But consistent with her humble nature, she did what had to be done to tell this Army story.

STRIEZELMARKT DRESDEN

NOV. 29-DEC. 24

Dresden’s Striezelmarkt is considered to be the oldest Christmas market in Germany, taking place for 589th time this year. But it’s not just its record age that attracts visitors; it also boasts other outstanding features, such as the world’s tallest, 14.61-metre-high Ore Mountain step pyramid, what is likely to be the world’s largest walk-in candle arch, and a daily program of cultural Christmas events for young and old. Equally irresistible, however, are Striezelmarkt’s premium little touches, like the Pflaumentoffel, a very historic handcrafted edible figurine made from dried plums. Not especially large, but all the more romantic, is the traditional ferris wheel which provides fantastic aerial views of the Striezelmarkt’s meticulously adorned stalls. https://striezelmarkt.dresden.de/en/ MARKETS IN/NEAR KMC » Deidesheim, Dec. 1-23 (weekends) » Kaiserslautern, until Dec. 23 » KL Kultur until, Dec. 23 » Otterberg, Dec. 23 MARKETS IN FRANCE/LUXEMBOURG/BELGIUM/NETHERLANDS » Colmar, until Dec. 30 » Strasbourg, until Dec. 26 » Luxembourg City, until Jan. 1, 2024 » Brussels, until Jan. 1, 2024 » Amsterdam/Ice Christmas Village, until Dec. 26 OTHER CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN GERMANY » Aachen, until Dec. 23 » Ansbach, until Dec. 23 » Augsburg, until Dec. 24 » Baden-Baden, until Jan. 6, 2024 » Bamberg, until Dec. 23 » Berlin, until Dec. 31, www.berlin.de » Darmstadt, until Dec. 23 » Dresden, until Dec. 24 » Düsseldorf, until Dec. 30, www.duesseldorf.de » Ettlingen, until Dec. 28 » Freiburg, until Dec. 23

First full-scale missing prisoner exercise held by only US military correctional facility in Europe

A U.S. Air Force Security Forces officer gives commands to the escapee during a missing prisoner emergency action plan on Sembach on Kaserne, Dec. 14. Photos by Sgt. Scott Sparks

by Shaylee Borcsani 21st Theater Sustainment Command Testing the capabilities of Soldiers guarding prisoners at Europe’s only correctional facility as well as strengthening military and host-nation cooperation came into play during an exercise here in vicinity of the Sembach Correctional Facility. The Missing Prisoner Emergency Action Plan Exercise tested U.S. Army Correctional Activity-Europe’s ability to trace, capture and return Soldiers to the facility. This is the first full-size exercise conducted at this facility to test the readiness of the facility’s military and partner organizations. The exercise involves multiple units from the local area including U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz’s Directorate of Emergency Services, Combined Military Working Dog Detachment-Europe and the Kaiserslautern Polizei. During the exercise, correctional-facility cadre monitored three Soldiers who were simulating prisoners conducting area beautification outside of the facility’s containment area. During this time a

Sgt. Alexander Farnum and Staff Sgt. Renaldo Rameriez, with the 92nd Military Police Company “Rock Solid,” arrest and escort the captured escapee back towards the waiting MP vehicle during a missing prisoner emergency action plan exercise on Sembach Kaserne, Dec. 14. The exercise was used to highlight the readiness of the facility’s military and partner organizations in the event a prisoner escapes custody.

Soldier fled custody of the cadre to attempt escape. The facility’s operations chief said the ability to react to scenarios like these is key to a ensuring the security of the prisoners and the outside community. “Our team is ready to react and has plans in place in the very unlikely event a prisoner was to escape our cadres custody,” said Sgt. 1st Class Davon Watkins, correctional facility operations chief. “We immediately lockdown the facility, establish an emergency operations center, deploy a search party and coordinate with local partners for help.” Once the emergency action plan is activated, the cadre and senior leaders in the facility begin contacting multiple community organizations to assist in catching the missing prisoners. Watkins said the cooperation between all units is essential. “Events of this scope require that we are able to seamlessly work with multiple military organizations and our host-nation Polizei partners,” said Watkins. “We all must be able to work within the systems each party has in place,

and this exercise allows everyone involved to learn how each organization operates so in the event there is an emergency we are familiar with all systems and policies.” In the end, the combined team of Soldiers, a military working dog, DES officers and Polizei caught the fleeing prisoners and returned them to the facility. While there were adjustments and challenges, Watkins called the exercise a success. “This exercise was a resounding success and met and exceeded every expectation we had,” he said. “Any challenges we faced we overcame quickly and adjusted well. In the end this was a great learning tool for us that we will take back to our teammates and will do even better next time.” The missing prisoner exercise allows the correctional facility to coordinate emergency measures with local partners within minutes of an emerging event occurring and is important since all organizations have different law enforcement roles throughout the community. “It is important to emphasize that the responsibility for security in the West Palatinate is not

The purpose of MPs is to protect the lives and property of military personnel and operate confinement facilities.

Sgt. Fabio Santana with the 100th Military Police Detachment Military Working Dog, Combined Military Working Dog Detachment Europe, holds Staff Sgt. Eron, a Military Working Dog, while he gives commands to the escapee during a missing prisoner emergency action plan exercise on Sembach Kaserne, Dec. 14. only the duty of the police alone but is a shared task that we carry together,” said Bernhard Christian Erfort, Kaiserslautern Polizei police spokesman. “The U.S. Armed Forces and their members have proven themselves not only as defenders of our freedom, but also as committed members of our community.” U.S. Army Correctional ActivityEurope exercises command and control of all U.S. military service members in Europe and Africa awaiting trial or serving time for crimes committed. The facility falls under the 21st TSC’s area of responsibility under the 18th MP Brigade. This scope of this exercise created buzz from media throughout Germany with a slew of media outlets interested in the facility’s crucial mission of the U.S. Army’s only correctional facility in Europe. “The media attending events like this not only shows what our units are doing but allows the local community to see firsthand the scope of work the Army does with our host nation partners,” said Maj. Vonnie Wright, 21st Theater Sustainment Command public affairs officer. “We want to be able

to highlight the work of the 18th Military Police Brigade, the correctional facility, our German Allies and the 21st TSC any time we have the opportunity.” Noting the exercise’s success and praising his team’s readiness, U.S. Army Correctional ActivityEurope senior enlisted leader Sgt. Major Marcus Mitchell said his team should take pride in the results and the partnership they have built with their host-nation colleagues. “This exercise is a win for the facility, the 18th MP Brigade, the 21st TSC and the Army Corrections Command,” he said. “Our team here at the United States Army Correctional Activity Europe performs their duties at the facility in Sembach 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It is critical and mandated that we exercise scenarios like this internally and with our local German and American partners who would participate and assist with this type of event. I am extremely proud of their efforts and the teamwork they showed throughout the exercise to get the job done.”

BLACK FOREST from Page 1 Black Forest National Park: Where to start The national park, which was established in 2014 and which encompasses approximately 25,000 acres of heavy, hilly forest south of Baden and Baden and north of Triberg, feels mysterious and fairy-talelike. It’s easy to imagine Roman legions refusing to enter, as happened two thousand years ago when they first called it Silva Negra, or the Black Forest. Fortunately, a much friendlier fate awaits today’s visitors. The national park visitors center in Ruhestein is an excellent place to begin. Entrance is free, though a small fee is charged if you want to see a pretty cool exhibition on how the forest is returning to its wild ways. Fantastic national park hikes The Ruhestein center is also located very near the Schliffkopf nature reserve, which offers some of the best hiking in Panoramic view of northern Black Forest

the Black Forest. During the spring and summer, hikers can find peace and quiet quickly. Lucky hikers will spot deer or even snakes (although some might consider that less lucky). For a reasonably easy peak hike, consider the Schliffkopf hike, which begins in the parking lot of the Schliffkopf hotel. The loop trail winds through classic terrain — heaths, forests, and meadows — and offers incredible views of the Rhine Valley. When you reach the 1,053-meter peak, you’ll be grateful. Another excellent hike, in the northern portion of Black Forest National Park, is the Hoher Ochsenkopf trail. The forest surrounding it contains a number of rare and endangered species of fauna and flora. Be on the lookout for the “Hurricane” portion of the trail, where 1999 hurricane winds laid waste to a whole portion of the forest. The peak is nearly the same height as the Schliffkopf, at 1,054 meters. Even if you’re not into Black Forest peaks, there are tons of other walking options.

More than 180 kilometers of trails stretch through the park, many of which push past traditional farmhouse shops that offer clocks (naturally) and Black Forest cake. Nearby towns — three great Black Forest side trips One of the best parts of living in Germany is that wilderness and civilization sit cheek to jowl. Here are three great stops to put on your Black Forest list. Baden Baden, which is 45 minutes north of the national park visitors’ center at Ruhestein, is a wonderful place to visit. A famous spa town, Baden Baden is an ideal place to stop for lunch and a massage (or sauna) following a morning hike. It’s also a pretty solid choice if you’re looking for a place to spend a long weekend. Freudenstadt, located 30 minutes south of Ruhestein, is an overlooked gem in the Black Forest. The centuries-old city marketplace was destroyed during World War II, and then rebuilt into the beauti-

ful (and historic-seeming) place that it is today. Freudenstadt is packed with fountains, great places to eat, and offers surprisingly decent weather most of the year. Fun fact: The town’s layout was based on a traditional board game called Nine Men’s Morris, which was played in Roman times and is still played today! Triberg, an hour south of Freudenstadt, is another excellent Black Forest destination. Famed for its waterfalls and waterfall-associated hikes, Triberg also has an excellent cuckoo clock museum (which is way more fascinating than it sounds) that features the world’s largest cuckoo clock, which logs in at more than two stories tall! Getting to Black Forest National Park Reaching the Ruhestein Visitor’s Center by car takes just over two hours from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden, and 1.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with Deutsche Bahn for train options to Baden Baden, Freudenstadt, or Triberg. Photo by Wolfilser/Shutterstock.com

ABC IN KMC: eXotic X by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The letter X is a rather eccentric character that presents itself in ever changing facettes. Sometimes it needs a little “e” in support of its voice. Let’s explore and find examples. King Arthur’s magical sword was called Excalibur and the brave Galicians Asterix, Obelix and Miraculix have been fighting the Romans for 2,000 years. Xavier and Xenia are becoming popular names for new borns and Xanadu was an exotic place in Greek mythology, sung by Olivia Newton John. The xylophone is a colorful instrument, loved by kids experimenting with music. The term Xanthippe has several meanings, with the most common referring to a witch, magician or evil woman. Luckily, we could not find a single example of such a person in the KMC to report about. There are several base or post Xchanges around the area which

offer goods from A to X, in x-sizes from XS to XXXXL, in an x-number of colors such as xanthic or xanadu and can be purchased at an x-amount of buxx. And, just recently a social media platform was renamed X. What would medicine be without x-ray technology and its further development? Exemplary German mechanical engineer and physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen detected electromagnetic radiation in a wave range known as “x-rays” or Röntgen rays and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physix in 1901. Röntgen had family in Iowa, was planning to emigrate and had already accepted an appointment at Columbia University in New York City. Then World War X broke out and he was forced to change his plans. He remained in Munich for the rest of his career and passed away a xentury ago in 1923. Xenophobia is a term to describe dislike, prejudice or even hatred towards people of other cultures or countries. We

despixe this word and choose to practice Xenophilia instead, which characterizes respect and apprexiation towards others within the KMC on a daily basis. X is derived from the Phoenician letter “samekh” which means fish. It was origi-

nally used to represent the “s” when used as a hard “ks” sound. Greeks borrowed the letter around 900 BC to rename it “chi” which is also the first letter in the Greek word for “Christ” Χριστός (Christós). Early Christians sometimes used the X to secretly reflect their

membership in the church. The word Christmas is often shortened to X-mas. Some languages don’t have the letter X, such as Turkish which spells taxi as “taksi” or Ukrainian where Maxim is written “Maksim.” Ex is often used as a prefix for indicating a former status title such as ex-partner or ex-member and can mean “out of” or “from” such as exterritorial or export. Exit is naturally the way out. The only German city that starts with an X is Xanten in Nordrhein-Westfalen. It is famous for its Roman origins where Archeological Park Xanten (APX) was opened in 1977 and now has a Roman museum where you can find exceptionally many inscriptions with XXX. Romans used the X as symbol for the number ten, and these numerals are often used in reports, records or official documents. Thanx to our readers for excusing any mixspellings, we folx are extending our best wishes for an exciting year MMXXIV.
