Historical highlights: 75 years of forward airpower in Europe by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs and USAFEAFAFRICA History Office Seventy-five years ago this August, a formation of U.S. Air Force fighters began a journey across the Atlantic that would introduce a new generation of combat airpower to Europe and strengthen the defense of the NATO Alliance during the opening years of the Cold War. In August 1951, the 81st Fighter-Interceptor Wing arrived in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe area of responsibility, bringing with it the command’s first North American F-86 Sabres. The wing’s 91st, 92nd and 116th FighterInterceptor Squadrons arrived at a time when the growing Soviet threat had placed air defense at the forefront of USAFE’s mission. The F-86 represented a significant leap in capability. As the U.S. Air Force’s first swept-wing fighter, the Sabre offered the speed, maneuverability and performance necessary to counter increasingly capable Soviet aircraft, particularly the MiG-15. Its arrival provided USAFE with an advanced fighter at a pivotal point in the developing Cold War and strengthened the command’s ability to defend U.S. forces and Allied territory in Europe. The 81st was the first USAFE wing equipped with the Sabre, but it would not be the last. During the 1950s, several USAFE units, including the 48th and 86th wings, operated variants of the F-86. The aircraft also became a familiar sight across NATO as Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, West Germany, Greece and Türkiye operated either North American-built Sabres or versions produced under license by Canadair. The 81st Fighter-Interceptor Wing’s arrival in Europe also represented something larger than the introduction of a new aircraft. While assigned to Third Air Force, the wing was placed under the operational control of Royal Air Force Fighter Command’s No. 11 Group for training and potential combat operations.
The arrangement made the 81st the first foreign air force unit to become an integral part of Great Britain’s peacetime air defense, standing ready alongside the RAF to defend U.S. installations in the United Kingdom should conflict with the Soviet Union occur. That integration reflected an idea that remains central to U.S. airpower in Europe 75 years later: collective defense is stronger when Allies train, plan and operate together. Getting the 81st and its new fighters into position was itself a significant undertaking. Before its move to Europe, the wing was assigned to Air Defense Command’s Western Air Defense Force at Larson Air Force Base near Moses Lake, Washington. Throughout August 1951, its F-86s crossed the United States before beginning a multi-leg journey across the North Atlantic. The route stretched from Larson AFB to Hill AFB, Utah; Kirtland AFB, New Mexico; Tinker AFB, Oklahoma; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; Griffiss AFB, New York; Dow AFB, Maine; Goose Bay, Labrador, Cana da; Greenland; Keflavik, Iceland; Stornoway, Scot land; and finally the wing’s new operating locations at RAF Bentwaters and RAF Shepherds Grove in Eng land. The journey d e m o ns t r a t e d the considerable effort required to move cuttingedge combat air craft across con tinents in an era before modern aerial refueling and strategic mobility capabilities transformed the way Air Force units deploy. Once estab-
lished in the United Kingdom, the 81st began what would become a 42-year presence in Europe, flying multiple aircraft types while supporting Third Air Force and USAFE missions through the Cold War and beyond. The aircraft, technology and geopolitical environment have changed dramatically since those F-86s crossed the Atlantic in 1951, but the strategic importance of forward airpower has endured. Today, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa serves as the air component for both U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, directing air operations across a theater spanning three continents and 104 independent states. Its mission is to protect the U.S. homeland with Allies and partners, project combat-ready airpower in Europe, Africa and beyond, and deter aggression and win decisively should deterrence fail. Modern USAFE-AFAFRICA forces include capabilities the Airmen of the 81st could scarcely have imagined in 1951. Fifth-generation F-35A Lightning IIs now operate
from RAF Lakenheath alongside F-15E Strike Eagles, while F-16 Fighting Falcons, C-130J Super Hercules, KC-135 Stratotankers and other aircraft contribute to a network of combat airpower, mobility, intelligence, command and control, and support capabilities across the theater. The command has also evolved from the predominantly fight-inplace force of the Cold War into a more agile and expeditionary force capable of operating from multiple locations. Through exercises, deployments and realworld operations, USAFE-AFAFRICA Airmen routinely integrate with NATO Allies and other partners to strengthen interoperability, improve readiness and demonstrate the ability to rapidly generate and project combat power. Recent training continues that legacy. During COMBAT ARCHER UK 2026, F-35A Lightning IIs and F-15E Strike Eagles from the 48th Fighter Wing conducted high-end air-to-air weapons certification in the United Kingdom alongside KC-135 Stratotankers from the
100th Air Refueling Wing, keeping combat aircraft positioned in Europe while sharpening the capabilities required to respond to emerging threats. Seventy-five years separate the F-86 Sabres of the 81st Fighter-Interceptor Wing from the advanced aircraft operating across USAFE-AFAFRICA today. Yet both generations reflect the same enduring principle: credible deterrence requires capable Airmen, advanced combat power, strong partnerships and the ability to place both where they are needed. The 81st’s journey across the Atlantic in August 1951 was more than the arrival of a new fighter. It was an investment in forward presence and collective defense at a pivotal moment in European history. Three-quarters of a century later, USAFE-AFAFRICA continues that commitment — forward, agile and ready alongside Allies and partners to protect the homeland, deter aggression and, if required, win decisively.

Space Forces in Europe - Space Forces Africa change of command
U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, commander, U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Command Europe, transfers command to U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Christopher A. Fernengel, U.S. Space Forces Europe – Space Forces Africa incoming commander, at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 10. U.S. Space Forces in Europe – Space Forces Africa is the U.S. Space Force component field command charged with supporting both U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, encompassing 51 countries in Europe and 53 countries in Africa.
Story & photos by Airman 1st Class Joseph Curzi 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Christopher A. Fernengel assumed command of U.S. Space Forces in Europe – Space Forces Africa during a change of command ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 10. U.S. Space Forces in Europe – Space Forces Africa, also known as SPACEFOREUR-AF, is the Space Force component responsible for integrating space capabilities in support of the U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. The component supports operations across 51 countries in Europe and 53 countries in Africa. “Space is inherently joint, interagency, and multinational,” said U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich, commander, U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe. “It holds the connective tissue that binds our joint force together and helps us take apart that of any adversary.” Grynkewich highlighted the growth of SPACEFOREUR-AF under U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton, including the expan-
sion of the component to more than three times its original size. “The rise of space and cyber have demanded the need for multidomain operations, which requires new command and control, new capabilities and a different way of thinking about it,” said U.S. Air Force Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson, commander, U.S. Africa Command. “The U.S. remains the gold standard for space operations.” Anderson highlighted the importance of space capabilities to operations across two distinct areas of responsibility. U.S Space Force Lt. Gen. Dennis O. Bythewood, U.S. Space Forces Space commander and Combined Joint Force Space Component commander for U.S. Space Command, also emphasized the broad scope of SPACEFOREUR-AF’s mission. “The Space Forces Europe and Africa mission is broader than probably any Space Force component that we have," Bythewood said. “It requires a steadfast leadership that is out there day in and day out, pounding the pavement, making connections, and making sure that we're driving the integration necessary for space forces to be effective.” Fernengel previously com-
manded the 4th Space Control Squadron and Space Delta 3, where he led units focused on space electronic warfare and electromagnetic warfare operations. Most recently, he served as the director of Plans and Programs, Office of the Deputy of Chief Space Operations for Strategy, Plans, Programs and Requirements for Headquarters U.S. Space Force. Fernengel said the command must continue adapting while maintaining strong partnerships and developing its growing force. He emphasized urgency, initiative and continuous improvement as the component enters its next phase. “The adversary is watching, and we need to adapt,” Fernengel said. “The shifting geopolitical landscape, a seemingly increased cooperation among competitors, as well as technology advancements, will require us to evolve as we navigate an ever-changing operational environment.” Fernengel succeeds Middleton, who retires this fall after 34 years of military service. Middleton’s tenure included significant growth of the component and expanded operational capabilities across the European and African theaters.

by Astrid Glockner Customs Translator/Operations Specialist U.S. Army Customs Agency – Europe and Africa In accordance with AEA Reg. 550-175, retired military personnel, their dependent spouses, widows/widowers, retired reservists, 100 percent disabled veterans, certain VHIC holders, unaccompanied dependents, and 20/20/20 former spouses are permitted to purchase items from sales facilities on U.S. bases and installations. To qualify for shopping privileges, eligible individuals must first obtain AEA Form 550175K from any local military customs office for status verification. Eligible individuals can only obtain this form if they intend to live in or visit Germany for 30 consecutive days or more. Widows and widowers of deceased military members must be residents of Germany. Once obtained from the local U.S. military customs office, the AEA Form 550-175K must be presented to the German Customs office serving the area of residence for further processing and for issuance of the customs authorization (Form 0216) and the German Customs Certificate (Form 0217, also known as the “Pink Card”). The Pink Card and U.S. beneficiary ID allow eligible individuals to purchase non-rationed items for personal use and consumption at AAFES and DeCA sales facilities in Germany. The purchase of rationed items, such as alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, motor fuel, but also heating fuel, as well as making purchases for noneligible individuals is not permitted. Eligible individuals are responsible for keeping sales receipts for all purchases made by them and their dependents. The receipts must be presented to the local German Customs office for duty assessment no later than the fifth workday of the month following the purchase. Upon presentation of the receipts, German Customs will levy lumpsum duties based on the applicable euro exchange rate in the month when purchases were made. A 17.5 percent duty will be charged on each item costing less than the U.S. dollar equivalent of €50. For each item costing more than €50, German Customs will charge the respective tariff rate for that item plus the applicable value-added tax of either 19 percent or 7 percent.
Pink card holders must follow the guidance issued by the local German customs office when not making any purchases during a particular month or several months at U.S. sales facilities during their Pink Card’s validity period. The German Customs office may require individuals to confirm in writing that they made no purchases during the respective period. German customs may conduct spot checks. For this purpose, Pink Card holders will be asked to sign a declaration that they have declared all of their purchases during a particular time period to German customs and agree to the transmission of their statements to U.S. military and German customs authorities for verification (Form 0214). German customs may deny or revoke a Pink Card if the individual denies signing the declaration. The U.S. Forces are not the proponent of this process but are required by international agreement to provide information upon request by host nation authorities. Suspected violations will be investigated by the U.S. Army Military Police and the investigative results be shared with German authorities in accordance with international agreements. If eligible individuals fail to meet their obligations, German Customs may temporarily withdraw the authorization and Pink Card, where applicable charge the owed taxes and duties, and even impose a tax fine. Like in the US, tax fraud is a criminal offense in Germany and, depending on its severity, even may result in a criminal indictment. For a first offense, German Customs may confiscate the Pink Card and block the issuance of a new form 550-175K for six months; for a repeated offense, the authorization may be permanently revoked. Additionally, base access may be suspended by the Garrison commander for civilian misconduct. Suspension of base access and the suspension of the Pink Card are two separate procedures that may not necessarily overlap in time. Deliberate abuse of the Pink Card system by a few individuals could endanger a privilege enjoyed by many hundreds of former service members and their dependents. Please make sure you abide by the rules. In case of any questions, please email or call your local U.S. Forces customs field office.

Story & photo by Airman 1st Class Paden Lancaster 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Physical therapy professionals at Ramstein Air Base are encouraging Airmen to take a proactive approach to musculoskeletal health, addressing pain early and building consistent fitness habits before minor problems develop into longer-term injuries. “A majority of the injuries we actually see here are overuse injuries,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Jenna Boyd, 86th Medical Group Physical Therapy officer in charge. Boyd said sudden increases in running, weightlifting or other physical activities can place more demand on the body than it is prepared to handle. Instead of reacting after an injury occurs, she recommends gradually increasing activity and consistently strengthening the muscles that provide stability to the feet, ankles,
knees, hips, shoulders and core. When pain does occur, early intervention can keep an acute problem from becoming chronic. “The main thing as far as preventing injuries is more regular fitness,” Boyd said. “A lot of times it’s that transition to a culture of fitness versus a culture of testing.” Waiting weeks or months to seek care can lengthen the recovery process and potentially keep Airmen from full physical capabilities longer. The proactive approach also places responsibility beyond the treatment room. While physical therapists can provide evaluation, education and short-term pain management, U.S. Air Force Maj. Michelle Larrea, Physical Therapy flight commander said lasting improvements require patients to use those tools consistently. “I don’t have magical hands,” Larrea said. “I’m going to give you the tools for you to fix yourself, but you have to use the tools.”

Selfless service: 39th ABW Airman saves driver’s life Story & photo by Staff Sgt. Victoria Nuzzi 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs No one knows when the call to act will come. For U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Darian Bogart, it came on the side of Interstate 95 in South Carolina, where years of military training prepared him to pull an unconscious driver from a burning vehicle and provide the lifesaving care that saved the driver’s life. On July 20, while home on leave in Sumter County, South Carolina, Bogart, an engineering apprentice assigned to the 39th Civil Engineering Squadron, was traveling with a friend when they spotted a vehicle that had crashed head-on into a tree. Smoke was already rising from the wreckage. “We saw a car had hit a tree head-on, and it was starting to smoke,” Bogart said. “I looked at my friend and asked, ‘Do you think we should stop?’ I didn’t know how badly the driver was hurt or if anyone with medical training would stop. I knew I had the skills to help, so there really wasn't another choice.” When Bogart reached the scene, the vehicle was engulfed in flames and the driver was unconscious. He rushed to the wreck and attempted to open the driver’s door, but the handle ripped off in his hand as the damaged vehicle began falling apart. “The driver woke up while I was trying to get him out,” Bogart said. “I had to convince him to leave the vehicle. He partially climbed out before losing consciousness again, and I was able to pull him the rest of the way to safety.” With the driver safely away from the burning vehicle, Bogart immediately began assessing his injuries.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Darian Bogart, 39th Civil Engineering Squadron engineering apprentice, stands for a portrait at Incirlik Air Base, Türkiye, July 28, 2026. Bogart, while on leave, performed lifesaving tactical combat casualty care on an individual in a car accident, embodying readiness, professionalism and selfless service.
“He regained consciousness shortly after,” Bogart said. “I wrapped his hands because of the severe burns, flushed the dirt and blood from his eyes so he could see and stay calm, and continued checking him for other injuries." During his assessment, Bogart discovered catastrophic injuries to the driver’s right leg. “I noticed his right hip and femur had been shattered, and he had a small wound on his thigh that was bleeding heavily,” Bogart said. “I applied a tourniquet and packed the wound with gauze while talking with emergency dispatchers, explaining everything I was
seeing and doing.” Bogart continued treating the driver until first responders and a Life Flight helicopter arrived. He then assisted emergency personnel in transferring the driver onto the aircraft before stepping aside, knowing the patient was finally in the hands of advanced medical professionals. “The EMS chief on scene told me there was no way the driver would have survived without the tourniquet,” Bogart said. “A couple of days later, the state trooper who responded called to tell me the driver was stable and expected to make a full recovery.”
Bogart’s actions did not go unnoticed, in the days following the rescue, the South Carolina Highway Patrol recognized his courage and selfless service. “The bravery shown by Bogart is a testament to his character and his commitment to help others in need,” said Colonel C.N. Williamson, SCHP Commander. “His quick action in removing the driver from the burning car before it had been completely engulfed in flames likely prevented the collision from having a fatal outcome.” Bogart credits nearly eight years of Tactical Combat Casualty Care training and the Air Force’s empha-
sis on remaining calm in a crisis for preparing him to respond without hesitation. “I’ve had TCCC training throughout my entire career,” Bogart said. “The Air Force prepared me to stay calm and respond under pressure, but more importantly, it taught me the core value of Service Before Self and for me, that means not turning a blind eye when we can help, even if it puts us in harm’s way.” Though the incident occurred while he was on leave, Bogart said his response was simply an extension of the training every Airman receives. “The biggest thing I want other Airmen to take away from this is to take your training seriously,” he said. “You never know when you'll need it. It could happen during a deployment, or it could happen when you least expect it.” Bogart sustained minor burns during the rescue but has since returned to Incirlik Air Base and is back with his unit, ready to support the mission. “The 39th CES takes pride in the caliber of the Airmen we develop and the character they demonstrate every day,” said Maj. Lukas Morse, 39th CES commander. “What SSgt. Bogart did is exactly why we train the way we do. His ability to remain calm, rely on his training and put someone else’s life before his own reflects the values and culture that define our squadron; and we couldn’t be more honored to have him in our ranks.” Although his actions took place thousands of miles from Türkiye, they embodied the readiness, professionalism and selfless service expected of every Airman assigned to the 39th ABW.

ABC in KMC: Erfenbach Erfenbach lies on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, bordered by Otterbach (Sambach), the Kaiserslautern districts of Erzhütten‑Wiesenthalerhof and Siegelbach, with forest to the south and farmland to the north. The municipality includes Stockborn and Lampertsmühle with a train station and has about 2,800 residents, roughly 100–120 of them American. First recorded from 1143 under various spellings, such as Ervenpach, Erpfenbach, and Erffenbach, the name Erfenbach became standard around 1800. Over the centuries the village belonged at times to Lorraine, the Lords of Hoheneck, and the Electoral Palatinate. From 1798 to 1814, it was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire. Erfenbach was incorporated into the Canton of Kaiserslautern under the Mairie of Weilerbach. In 1815, the village had 298 inhabitants. From 1818 to 1862, the village belonged to the Kaiserslautern District Commission, later called Kaiserslautern District. As part of the first RhinelandPalatinate administrative reform, the community was incorporated into the City of Kaiserslautern on June 7, 1969. Bachbahn Museum Small though it is, Erfenbach has a surprising cultural life. The Bachbahn Museum, located in a historic farmhouse in the town center, celebrates Erfenbach’s place among the first villages to be linked to the rail network by the Bachbahn. The branch line ran 16.5 kilometers from Lampertsmühle to Reichenbach‑Stegen and took its name from the many stops along its Locomotive in mini train landscape

route that ended in “bach,” meaning stream: Otterbach, Erfenbach, Siegelbach, Rodenbach, Weilerbach, Schwedelbach and Reichenbach. On the top floor a miniature railway displays the exact locations of every station that once served the Bachbahn and the layout is continually expanded. Built to gauge 0 and stretching roughly 180 meters, the model offers a highly detailed, faithful replica of the former route. Another highlight is the chance to sit inside an authentic dining car setting and soak up the romance of a bygone era, complete with lovingly preserved details, visitors are even welcomed at the entrance by an original ticket counter. The museum also encompasses a hall with a stage for varying events, a brewery and an artists’ studio. The museum welcomes visitors every first Sunday of the month and serves drinks and snacks from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come by and enjoy the romance of the rails. Bachbahn Brewery When the Bachbahn Museum was developed, the town decided Erfenbach deserved its own beer. A small brewery was installed in the museum, where brewmaster Andreas Schlichting, an experienced brewer who earned his master brewer’s diploma in Weihenstephan, produces the beer on site. The beer is a dark, naturally cloudy brew made from three distinctive malts: Munich malt for body, caramel malt for aroma, and Pilsner malt for balance and brightness. Two Hallertau hop varieties, Ariana and Blanc, provide the hop character, and to top it off, the beer is brewed with soft, fresh Erfenbacher water. The result is a full‑bodied, complex dark beer with layered malt flavors and a clean, refreshing finish. Schermerhof courtyard

range of styles. Housed in the former Schermer farmhouse, the studios showcase abstract and representational painting, digital works, and mixed media, while an on‑site restorer cares for paintings and sculptures. The preserved granary, kept in its historical condition, provides a striking exhibition space where rough, rural architecture meets contemporary art. Rustic beams and roof tiles form a dramatic backdrop for filigree and abstract pieces, creating an atmosphere where color, shadow, and light interact and the viewer becomes part of the experience. On the ground floor a flexible room opens onto a courtyard with a cottage garden and can be used for events or workshops. The open studio format invites visitors to meet the artists, explore the studios, and watch them at work. For further details visit: www.schermerhof.de Bergbau Museum Another attraction is the Bergbau Museum, a specialist display assembled by collector Dieter Weyhersmüller. It is roughly 35 square meters and presents a focused, well-documented display of mining. The collection highlights the region’s long mining tradition from Roman‑era workings through to mining activity into the 1940s and places particular emphasis on the tools, equipment, and daily working conditions of miners. Fünf im Bauernhaus After a day of history and stories, relax with coffee and cake in a charming farmhouse with blue wooden shutters and a cozy garden. Built in 1833 in Palatinate style and restored in 1996, “Café Fünf” houses five traditional craft workshops, including an old shoemaker’s studio, and offers a warm, authentic setting for a leisurely break. https://fuenf-im-bauernhaus.de/english Gastronomy and places to hang out You definitely won’t go hungry in Erfenbach and can choose from two authentic Italian restaurants, an Asian diner, or a snack Imbiss. For meeting locals over wine or a cold beer, and maybe to catch a soccer match, drop by the Weinwelt on Jahnstrasse, where bankers, builders, secretaries and homemakers gather casually to chat and unwind, and make a few new friends. Village Fest At the end of August, it’s Kerwe time: The village fills with food and drink stalls, children’s rides, beer benches, live music, and the traditional shout of “wem is die Kerb?” There will be live music, among others the Stauchwiesen Band, which was created during Covid, first played outdoors and now mainly performs for charitable causes. A small parade on Sunday, Aug. 30 will send floats and bands through the streets.

Taking part in the 5-day course were nearly 60 U.S. military and civilian medical personnel from the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and National Guard - well beyond the typical number of participants. This was the one-hundredth iteration of the program since its inception in 2015. “One of our key objectives in hosting the course was to help build a deeper “bench” of Global Health Engagement professionals – particularly within Army Medicine – capable of supporting future theater medical security cooperation and medical readiness efforts,” said U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Claude Burnett, director of Global
Health Engagements for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. According to senior US military officials, the U.S. military has a long-standing history in international public health issues because of their responsibility to protect the health of US forces and to ensure that they are ready to deploy anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice. Global Health Engagements are an important priority for overall the US military health system. “This particular course was designed to enhance competency in planning, executing, monitoring, and assessing Global Health Engagements,” added Burnett. “The course strengthens participants’ understanding of the strategic, operational, and partnernation considerations that shape military health cooperation while improving readiness to support future GHE missions.” “This particular course featured three days of interactive lectures, discussions, and a capstone exercise followed by two days of facilitated small-group workshops focused on practical planning for realistic U.S. European Command
and Africa Command-centric Global Health Engagement scenarios,” said Burnett. According to U.S. military medical officials, global health engagements involve sustained partnerships, medical capacity‑building, infectious‑disease surveillance, humanitarian assistance, and interoperability initiatives that
support force readiness and U.S. national security objectives. “This course successfully equipped participants with a comprehensive understanding of the strategic, operational, and civil-military considerations vital to military health engagements,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Dr.) Erika Petrik, Chief of Public
them to practically plan, execute, and monitor critical Global Health Engagement activities.” U.S. military medical experts indicate that Global Health Engagements are an important tool in strengthening relationships, building trust, expanding access, improving medical readiness, and enhancing interoperability.
Participants of the Fundamentals of Global Health Engagement Course collaborated during a capstone practical planning exercise at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 3-7. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, in partnership with the Uniformed Services University’s National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation and U.S. Africa Command, hosted more than 50 military and civilian personnel for the five-day course. Led by U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Claude Burnett, LRMC director of global health engagements, the event marked the 100th iteration of the program since 2015. The course is designed to train joint medical personnel in planning and executing theater medical security cooperation missions.

LRMC medics overcome adversity to take 3rd in MEDCOM Best Squad Competition Story by Bernhard Lashleyleidner Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Brig. Gen. Mark Stackle, commander of Medical Readiness Command-Europe, and Command Sgt. Maj. Kalani Kalili, senior enlisted advisor for MRC-EUR, presentedArmy Achievement Medals to five Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Soldiers during a ceremony on Aug. 11 at the LRMC Chapel. The awards recognized Staff Sgt. Joseph Cappiello, Sgt. Zachary Wright, Spc. Carlos Guizar, Spc. Kofi Ballogou, and Spc. Brucelee Tao, for their exceptional performance and dedication, which culminated in a third-place finish at the 2026 U.S. Army Medical Command Best Squad Competitionat Fort Benning, Georgia. Chaplain Jonathan Fowler, MRCEUR, command chaplain for Army Medical Command Europe and the Director of Religious Support for Defense Health Network Europe, opened the ceremony with an invocation. Master Sgt. William Carlyle Jr., senior operation noncommission
officer, MRC-EUR highlighted the leadership, technical proficiency, character, and physical fitness required of Soldiers competing at the Army’s highest levels. “Once a year, we see individuals who not only meet those standards, but redefine them,” Carlyle said. “The journey of the squad being recognized here today didn’t begin in Fort Benning, Georgia. It began right here in Germany.” The journey began with 22 candidates who volunteered to compete and were evaluated on their mental agility, physical fitness and technical abilities. From that group, five Soldiers were selected to represent Medical Readiness CommandEurope. The Best Squad Competition is a grueling, multi-day event designed to test the physical endurance, mental resilience, and tactical proficiency of some of the Army’s top medical personnel. For the LRMC team, however, the true test began months before the competitors arrived in Georgia. “The selection was only the starting point,” said Carlyle “What
followed was 10 weeks of intense, unforgiving collective training. For 70 days, these Soldiers pushed their bodies and minds to the absolute limit.” The team’s success was also the product of deliberate preparation and strong coaching. The two coaches worked to build the competitors into a highly cohesive team capable of operating under extreme physical and mental pressure. Kalili credited the team’s coaches, command teams and training staff for their commitment throughout the preparation process. “This team didn’t get here by accident,” Kalili said. “It was through deliberate preparation that they made it through the training.” She said the third-place finish at the Army-wide competition demonstrates the value of rigorous training and unwavering commitment. “When our Soldiers returned from the event in Hawaii last year, I asked them to pay it forward,” Kalili said. “Today, we are seeing the incredible results of that commitment.” Throughout the competition,
participants were required to demonstrate proficiency in areas including tactical combat casualty care, land navigation, weapons qualification, and physical fitness, while operating under extreme stress and fatigue. Stackle said the team’s performance demonstrated both individual competence and thehigh standards of medical readiness maintained at LRMC. “Over the past few months, we have seen firsthand that Army medicine remains as critical as ever,” Stackle said. “This entire team has done an impressive job, and I thank you for what you do.” Stackle also highlighted the positive feedback he has received about LRMC and the work being done throughout the organization, noting that Col. Warren Stewart, commander of LRMC, regularly keeps him informed about the command’s accomplishments. During the ceremony, Stackle presented the Soldiers with the Army Achievement Medals and commander’s coins in recognition of their performance.
The road to third place was not without challenges. Kalili said unforeseen circumstances and changes to the roster required the command to assemble three iterations of the team before reaching the final competition lineup. Despite those setbacks, the Soldiers remained focused and continued training at an elite level. “This team took on the absolute best Soldiers the United States Army Medical Command had to offer while facing extreme heat, elite competition, and squad changes,” Kalili said. Their performance ultimately demonstrated the grit, adaptability and resilience required of Army medical professionals operating in demanding environments. The Soldiers’ achievement reflects not only their individual dedication but also the collective efforts of their coaches, leaders and teammates. Their third-place finish demonstrates LRMC’s commitment to maintaining a medically ready force capable of providing highquality care in garrison and in forward-deployed environments.

Stay mission ready: Preparing for summer heat
As temperatures climb across the country, so does the risk of heat-related illness. Whether Airmen and Guardians are working outdoors, participating in physical training or spending time outdoors with family, taking simple precautions can help prevent injuries that affect personal health, occupational readiness and mission effectiveness. According to the Air Force Safety Center, summer activities often bring increased exposure to extreme heat. While anyone can experience heat illness, the risk rises during strenuous activity, especially when the body has not had time to adjust to hotter conditions. “Heat illness doesn't happen only during long workdays,” said Lt. Col. Jill Roser, Air Force Medical Command Public Health Operations chief. “It can happen during a weekend hike, while mowing the lawn or even during a routine workout if you're not prepared.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staying hydrated is one of the most effective ways to protect against heat illness, and hydration should begin before heading outdoors. This includes eating foods that hold a lot of water, such as fruits and vegetables, and, according to the Mayo Clinic, limiting caffeine and sugar intake from soda and some energy drinks, as they can be dehydrating.

Drinking water throughout the day, taking breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and gradually increasing activity in hot environments help the body adapt to higher temperatures. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration urges exposure each day over a 7-14 day period for heat adaptation and to maximize the physiologic benefit of acclimatization. Additionally, recognizing the early signs of heat exhaustion can also prevent a medical emergency. Heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea and muscle cramps are signals to stop activity, move to a cooler location and rehydrate. Without immediate action, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke, a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical care. Someone experiencing heat illness may not recognize their own symptoms, making peer intervention an important part of preventing serious injury. As outlined in DAFI 48-151, Thermal Stress Program, supervisors and coworkers should stay educated on the signs and symptoms of heat strain, provide first aid, remove the affected colleague from further heat stress exposure, and obtain definitive medical care. “As we focus on readiness, protecting ourselves from heat is another way we take care of ourselves, the mission, and each other,” Roser said. “Preparation before outdoor activities can make all the difference.” The Air Force Medical Service encourages personnel to make heat safety part of their daily routine throughout the summer by planning ahead, staying hydrated and knowing when it’s time to cool down.

to something larger than Four Chaplains Medal recognizes connected themselves. “Part of spirituality is purpose,” 30th Medical Brigade chaplain's Stewart said. “Why are we here? Why do we get up and do what we do every service, impact on readiness day? Why do we put on our uniform? Story & photo by Staff Sgt. Daniel Yeadon 21st Theater Sustainment Command Chaplain (Maj.) Antoinette Stewart, chaplain for the 30th Medical Brigade, received the Four Chaplains Medal Aug. 6 during the brigade's organization day at Donnelly Park on Ramstein Air Base. Chaplain (Col.) Eric Dean, command chaplain for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, presented the medal on behalf of the Chief of Chaplains. The award recognizes chaplains whose ministry reflects the courage, personal sacrifice, teamwork, religious calling and Army Values associated with the legacy of the Four Chaplains. Dean said the award is not competitive, and Stewart's selection should not be viewed as her standing out among a field of nominees. Instead, he said, her service and ability to recognize needs and respond to them set her apart. “She did stand out through her service, however, and through the many ways that she proactively and energetically identified areas of need in the community and provided effective religious support solutions to them,” Dean said. For Stewart, receiving an award she once associated with extraordinary figures in the Chaplain Corps came as a surprise. “I never thought it would be me,” Stewart said. “Never in a million years, never thought it would have been me.” The recognition also carries significance within the larger command. The 30th Medical Brigade falls under the 21st TSC, U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s lead organization for sustainment. The 21st TSC also serves as the responsible headquarters for USAREUR-AF’s medical, military police, and sustainment brigades.
The 30th Medical Brigade provides mission command of medical operations to deliver health service support and force health protection within the U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command theaters. Within that mission, Stewart focused much of her ministry on building connections among Soldiers, families and others she described as vulnerable or sometimes unseen members of the community. Her efforts included the Wellness Space, solo-parent initiatives and grief groups, as well as meditation coaching, yoga, physical training and spiritual fitness hikes. Dean said the programs contributed to the spiritual, emotional and physical readiness of the brigade. Stewart said the programs grew from a belief that people need connection and a community that will remain present when circumstances become difficult. “What was on my mind and what was my thought process in creating that is that people would have a space where they know that they belong,” Stewart said. “And they have a community.” She said she has seen greater cohesion, authenticity and openness develop through those opportunities, along with Soldiers realizing they are not alone when experiencing challenges. Col. Nate Forrester, commander of the 30th Medical Brigade, described Stewart's effect on the organization and its people during the award presentation. “Thank you for all that you've done, making this organization better, making me a better human being and a better leader, and being there when I need you,” Forrester said. For Stewart, religious support also contributes to readiness by helping Soldiers understand their purpose and recognize that their service is
U.S. Army Chaplain (Maj.) Antoinette Stewart, chaplain for the 30th Medical Brigade, speaks after receiving the Four Chaplains Medal during the brigade’s organization day at Donnelly Park on Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 6. Stewart was recognized for creating religious support initiatives for solo parents, people experiencing grief, and others seeking community connection and spiritual fitness. Her programs strengthened belonging, cohesion and readiness across the brigade.
A good religious support program answers those questions.” She said that sense of purpose can be reflected in how Soldiers work with one another and function as a team. “When Soldiers can come to work and work in cohesion and work in unity, you know, take care of their battle buddies, function as a team,” Stewart said. “Teams are getting along, teams are moving forward, functioning well. Leaders are functioning well. I think that’s how it contributes to readiness.” That emphasis on unity also shapes Stewart’s connection to the history behind the Four Chaplains Medal. On Feb. 3, 1943, four Army chaplains aboard the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester gave their life jackets to others as the ship sank after being torpedoed during World War II. Their actions became a lasting symbol of courage, sacrifice, teamwork, and service to others. “Chaplain Stewart’s ministry reflects the legacy of the Four Chaplains through her selfless service, commitment to the well-being of Soldiers, and her focus on providing holistic care,” Dean said. Stewart said one aspect of their actions resonates with her in particular: None of the four acted alone. “They didn't do it alone,” Stewart said. “They locked arms with three other people and did it together. And it just brings me back to that community, that stronger together.” For Stewart, that example also represents what she hopes to see throughout the Chaplain Corps: chaplains supporting one another so they can better care for the Soldiers and families who depend on them. Dean said recognizing that type of ministry has implications beyond an individual award. “The Four Chaplains Medal is significant for the Chaplain Corps and Army readiness because it recognizes and promotes the very actions that are fundamental to building a resilient and ready force,” Dean said. For the 30th Medical Brigade and the larger 21st TSC formation, Stewart's recognition provides an example of how religious support at the Soldier and family level can contribute to cohesive teams and organizational readiness within a command responsible for supporting Army operations across the theater. For Stewart, however, the moment remained personal. “I’m overwhelmed, and I’m extremely grateful,” Stewart said. “I’m extremely grateful for the work I get to do. I get to do this.”

Mauritania hosts US, 10 African nations for airfield safety partnership flight by U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Public Affairs In a first-of-its kind event, Mauritania hosted the U.S. Air Force and members from 10 partner nation air forces in Nouakchott, Mauritania from Aug. 3-7 to share best practices and exchange perspectives on foundational airfield safety standards. “Tactical-level experts from each participating nation are here in Mauritania to maximize information sharing to strengthen collective flightline operations in the region,” said U.S. Air Force Major Lauren Clark, 435th Tactical Advisory Squadron assistant director of operations. “Exchanging insights on safe airpower sustainment supports interoperability among everyone in attendance.” Participants from the United States, Mauritania, Benin, Senegal, Chad, Ivory Coast, Libya, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Tunisia shared their experiences and participated in discussions. Throughout the event, topics ranged from airfield security, managing environmental hazards, foreign object debris on the flightline, and more. Specialists from each nation took the time to discuss challenges they face on a daily basis and how best to mitigate them.
“We support partners by bringing capabilities and expertise unique to the United States,” said US Air Force Staff Sergeant Austin Doll, 435th Tactical Advisory Squadron airfield management specialist. “The opportunity to meet in this forum with African partner nations and discuss how we can work together safely in the future allows for operational-level idea-sharing where everyone benefits.” By augmenting airfield expertise, doors are opened for deeper partnerships and safeguarded interests, serving as a force multiplier for regional stability. Ultimately, this cooperation bolsters the safety of Northwest Africa while simultaneously defending the United States. “Our partnership with Mauritania is crucial to the collective security of West Africa,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jasmin Silence, A5I division chief. “By collaborating on safe airfield practices, we enhance our ability to collectively disrupt persistent threats across the continent.” Through dedication to fostering collaborative partnerships in Africa, USAFEAFAFRICA is empowering partner air forces to ensure regional threats are countered, safeguarding Africa and the United States.

Mozart and the Sound of Music Salzburg is perhaps most famous for music, and rightfully so. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the genius composer, was born in Salzburg in 1756. The city takes the connection seriously. Mozart Week, which is packed with brilliant concerts, is held each January. Visitors can also take a Mozart walking tour, which includes his birthplace, the Mozart Residence, a Mozart monument, and the resting places of many members of the Mozart family (the composer himself was famously buried in an unmarked grave in Vienna). Then, of course, there is Salzburg’s connection to the film “The Sound of Music.” Beloved by audiences worldwide (hundreds of thousands of people come to Salzburg each year precisely because of the movie), and based on a true story, the film was shot in and around Salzburg. Today, visitors can tour shooting locations, catch a Von Trapp family-themed dinner show, or take in a special Sound of Music marionette performance. Festivals year round The city does really well when it comes to festivals. The world-famous Salzburg Festival takes place each summer, and runs through the end of August. It offers concerts, plays, opera performances, and other live shows (musical and otherwise) that are excellent for the whole family. Autumn is equally awesome. There is (naturally) a Salzburg jazz festival in October. And Salzburg’s Rupertikirtag (St. Rupert’s Day) celebration is a can’t-miss event. Held near the end of September, Rupertikitag, the festival (which is a shorter, more colorful, more local, and more… Austrian than Oktoberfest) celebrates the 7th-century patron saint of Salzburg. And then there is the Salzburg Christmas market. With incredible lights, outstanding locations, and a Christmas museum, Salzburg during Advent is a must-see. Multiple markets are set up around the city, including ones near the Cathedral, the Residenz Palace, the Heilbrunn palace, and the Hohensalzburg Fortress. A modern old city How cool is Salzburg’s historic old city? Well, one entire half of it (the city is split by the Salzach River) is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Highlights include Salzburg Cathedral, Mozartplatz, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Gardens, and the super-cool Linzer Gasse. But the city walk is almost as compelling as the highlights. The shops, the streets, the lights, the elegance – it is Salzburg at its baroque finest. At the same time, Salzburg has an unmistakeable sense of youthful energy. It’s easy to understand why. Salzburg is a university town. Music matters, too: even the oldest pieces of music are continually reinvented from generation to generation. The city also has a wonderful Museum of Modern Art, and colorful street art can be found everywhere.

much more. Just a short trip across the German border, Salzburg also is nestled next to the Austrian Alps.
Gateway to the great outdoors For a big-city jumping-off point to visit the Austrian Alps, it’s hard to get better than Salzburg. Incredible hikes can be found less than an hour away (including the Sound of Music trail, which is a mere 45 minutes south). In the winter, great skiing is right there, too. Salzburg itself is built for nature lovers. The river is beautiful and peaceful. Parks and gardens dot the city. The Hellbrunn Palace grounds and Mirabell Gardens are manicured masterpieces. Aigner Park is a nature reserve that offers a wilder experience. Best of all, though, are the green spaces and parks that give the city a sort of calm balance.

Getting there By car, Salzburg is 6 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 4.5 hours from Stuttgart. Please check with Deutsche Bahn for train information. Austrians celebrate Saint Rupert’s Day, the patron saint of Salzburg, with festivities, rides, and food booths.
