435th Air Advisors strengthen partnership with Hungary

Hungarian military firefighters practice putting out an aircraft fire during an in-flight emergency drill, during a 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron air advisor’s event at Pápa Air Base, Hungary, Aug. 1. The 435th CRSS air advisor’s event, was a three-week bilateral exercise intended to provide Hungary and regional partners with intermediate-level airfield management capabilities, as well as a familiarization with flightline safety procedures and occupational health.

Kirby Turbak 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Aerial Evacuation Squadron recently hosted the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Emergency Medical Technician Rodeo at Ramstein Air Base, July 23-24. Seven teams of four Airmen from across Europe competed against each other in an array of situations that medics and combat medics face, like medication overdoses, drownings, gunshot victims, vehicle extractions, and a mass casualty with 30 victims. “It’s vital for our medics to have the

Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron’s air advisors flight, in conjunction with the Ohio Air National Guard, conducted a bilateral training exercise with Hungarian, Latvian and Croatian military personnel at Pápa Air Base, Hungary, July 15 to Aug. 1. This is the second annual air advisor’s event, after Hungarian and regional partners implemented several suggestions made by the 435th’s CRSS in 2018. This year’s exercise provided Hungary and regional partners with intermediate-level airfield management capabilities, as well as a familiarization with flightline safety procedures and occupational health. Air advisors used workshops and flightline exercises to achieve the objectives. “We brought several members to See PARTNERSHIP, Page 2

opportunity to train like we fight,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jason Oldenburg, USAFE-AFAFRICA Command Surgeon chief. “Putting them in stressful situations enhances their critical thinking skills and builds resiliency.” The teams consisted of members from Incirlik AB, Turkey; Aviano AB, Italy; Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England; RAF Croughton, England; RAF Alconbury, England; Spangdahlem AB, Germany; and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. The challenges these Airmen faced required their endurance, attention to detail, and teamwork. See RODEO, Page 6

PARTNERSHIP from Page 1 work with the 435th CRSS and to train in airfield management and air traffic control scenarios, but the bigger objective is the partnership between militaries,” said Ohio National Guard Brig. Gen. Todd Audet, assistant adjutant general, Columbus, Ohio. Ohio has had a partnership with Hungary for 26 years and since arriving in Hungary, Audet said he has seen that partnership strengthen. “This exercise was just another opportunity to both share our Airmen’s skills and provide training,” said Audet. “The 435th CRSS is doing a phenomenal job and our Airmen have learned a lot working with their air advisors.” After the success of the first training exercise, the Hungarians asked the 435th CRSS to come back to conduct more workshops on airfield management, and to begin conversations about Air Force procedures in occupational health. “Last year when we were here the Hungarians identified a need for occupational health, so they requested we come back to conduct a knowledge exchange,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Claude Betene-A-Dooko, 435th CRSS air advisor flight commander. “This year we learned more about their program and told them about ours, in order to decide what kind of training we could provide to them.” To gather information about the Hungarian military’s occupational health program, a key leader engagement was conducted during the 435th CRSS mobile training team event, which involved collecting information from students and decision makers. “We sat down with the Hungarian military’s Deputy Surgeon General and Chief of Operational Medicine to gain a better understanding of the occupational health program in the Hungarian defense forces,” said Betene-A-Dooko. When asked why occupational

The 435th CRSS air advisors taught Hungarian and regional partners flightline emergency protocols, base defense and fire safety. health is important Betene-A-Dooko said, “Occupational health is very important because it identifies and measures risk, and provides safety training to Airmen. It also delivers detailed information to medical providers, so they can offer medical care that is specific and adapted to the potential exposures that Airmen experience on a daily basis.” During the mobile training team event, the Hungarian military learned the basics of airfield management, but this year’s training focused on a more intermediate difficulty. “This course started last year with the basics and this year is just a continuation of it, said Tech. Sgt. John Morris, 435th CRSS airfield manager air advisor. “This year we taught intermediate airfield management, which is more of the back office, managerial type of work.” Airfield managers are also responsible for the safety of aircraft, personnel, operations, and daily inspections of the airfield. “We’re in charge of the entire airfield,” said Morris. “When we teach the Hungarians the way we conduct operations, it helps build a safer airfield environment. This allows us

to use their airfield, and vice-versa, because we’re operating at the same capacity, knowing that we all have the safety criteria.” Airfield management’s goal was to enhance the Hungarian and regional partner’s capabilities on an airfield, in and out of a deployed environment. “Airfield management’s job is to activate the crash network and to alert all necessary agencies of danger and emergencies, so they can respond in a timely manner to mitigate any loss of human life and Air Force property, said Tech. Sgt. Andrew Lipian, 179th Airlift Wing aviation resource manager. Lipian said enhancing the Hungarians’ capabilities allows them to diversify responsibilities so the people in the tower can focus on the air traffic. “This asset of learning airfield management only helps them to improve their operational success by parsing out the various multifarious duties that the airfield managers can take away from the people in the tower. The airfield will be better managed by having a team of people whom are in charge of just the airfield.” Keeping the flightline and its per-

sonnel safe is a tenuous job, requiring several agencies to work and communicate together. “There are multiple agencies involved when there’s a flightline emergency, such as air traffic control, fire, airfield management, security forces, occupational health, and medical, said Staff Sgt. Jeremey Podzimek, 435th CRSS air advisor. The 435th CRSS air advisors taught flightline emergency protocols, base defense, fire safety, and nine days of instruction on Air Force security and fire procedures. “Base defense is important because it protects assets on the flightline, ensuring nothing unwanted gets into the base or onto the flightline,” said Podzimek. Lipian said overall the training exercise was a success, with all participating nations leaving with a stronger partnership and enhanced interoperability capabilities. “Hungary has the desire, the willingness, and the capability to enhance their flightline operations,” said Lipian. “With this new capability, we have every confidence they will be able to improve not only their air force, but NATO as well.”

Wounded Warrior shares its Reality to Resiliency by Airman 1st Class Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Healing. Community. Future. These are three things that Air Force Wounded Warrior Program gave John Berry, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman and Wounded Warrior ambassador. “I can see different things out of myself that I wasn’t able to before,” Berry said. “So it just makes every day brighter.” Berry fell 15 feet, handsfirst, during work in July 2017. He suffered from two broken wrists as well as severe brain injuries. Berry, along with over 8,000 other warriors, are part of the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program, a program designed to help Airmen recover from combat, mental illness and other injuries. He has been a part of the program for two years now. Berry participated with about 40 other warriors in the 2019 United States Air Forces in Europe Warrior Care Event from July 18-26, an event hosted by Ramstein Air Base. The Warrior Care Event is the first time AFW2 has been brought overseas. Berry, who had never been overseas, was excited when he heard the news. “It was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss,” he said. His wife, Christian Berry, agrees. “I felt blessed because I feel like we always talk about this,” she said. “A lot of people don’t know what this program is and to be able to take it out

of the country and to communicate not just with words, but to see it. It is an incredible experience not only for us to absorb, but for others to be a part of.” The event was also the first time families were invited to the program. “For the first time ever, children and families are being integrated into the care event and are given the opportunity to train and compete alongside their loved one,” said Marsha Gonzales, Warrior Care Division deputy. “The 2019 USAFE Warrior Care Event will be used as a model for future events and highlight the importance of building a resilient family.” Berry was very happy that his family came along on their trip overseas. “It means everything to me,” he said. “They were my stronghold and my rock.” The event featured a variety of sports such as track, swimming, powerlifting, shooting, archery, wheelchair basketball and rugby. It also featured other mental wellness activities such as workshops, making music, and a tour of Kaiserslautern. Berry said his favorite sport at the event was wheelchair rugby, for the contact and comradery. Christian Berry agrees. “Rugby is so intense, but it’s done in a way that’s not negative or oppressive,” Berry said. “It’s hard to grasp that middle line sometimes, but it’s amazing and so much fun.” AFW2 not only cares for people who are suffering from physical or combat-related

injuries, it also cares for invisible wounds as well. “I didn’t feel like I was deserving to begin with because my injury wasn’t combat-related, I haven’t been deployed and I haven’t been in the military very long” Berry said. “So for them

to take me in the way they did and they just embraced us and made us part of the family. Like anybody else.” Berry said that it’s important to reach out if anyone feels like they are in need of this program. “The more you hide the

injury, the more it hurts,” Berry said. “This program is here for you.” For more information on how to refer an Airman for the program visit the AFW2 website at https:// www.woundedwarrior.af.mil/.

CAP cadets learn about aerospace, leadership, teamwork in largest European Summer Encampment Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Ramstein Civil Air Patrol hosted their largest annual overseas encampment from July 26 to August 2. During the weeklong 2019 European Summer Encampment cadet Airmen performed physical training, practiced drill marching, and learned about aerospace and leadership skills. U.S. Air Force Capt. Bradley Whitacre, CAP enc ampment commander, said this encampment hosted cadet Airmen from as far away as Alaska and other countries such as the United Kingdom and Belgium. Whitacre said that their opportunities are unique because of their location. They can offer opportunities such

as flying in a C-130 over Germany which makes it easier for them to appeal to kids and families. Encampments are required to become officers in Civil Air Patrol. They are also requirements for the Billy Mitchell Award, an award that grants eligibility for advanced rank when a cadet wants to enlist into the Air Force. Whitacre said the encampment is about more than learning about the Air Force and aerospace, however. It’s about building cadets into better citizens. “I believe the line CAP uses is: ‘Building outstanding new American citizens and dynamic aerospace leaders,’” Whitacre said. “Encampment focuses more on the team mentality and indoctrinating them into the cadet life of similar rituals.”

U.S. Civil Air Patrol cadets work together to balance a plank of wood during a team-building activity Aug. 1, at Kapaun Air Station. The 2019 European Summer Encampment is the largest overseas encampment held so far, hosting cadet Airmen from states such as Alaska to countries such as the United Kingdom.

U.S. Civil Air Patrol cadets prepare for further instruction Aug. 1, at Kapaun Air Station. Cadet Airmen participated in the 2019 European Summer Encampment where they learned about leadership, aerospace and teamwork.

The age range for cadet Airmen was 12 to 17 years old. There were approximately 60 cadet Airmen present at the event and 21 senior members. Tai Oser, a CAP cadet Airman, said his favorite part of the encampment was the

team-building activities. “It’s really fun to bond as a team and work together to accomplish a goal,” said Oser. Whitacre encouraged anyone interested in the program to come to their meetings at 6:30-9:30 p.m. every week. He said that while those

meetings are a requirement to get into Civil Air Patrol, they are also a great outlet for getting in touch with other military resources. “There’s something for everyone and your level of commitment is determined by you,” said Whitacre.

RODEO from Page 1 “When we introduce a competitive spirit and realistic scenarios, training becomes a lot of fun and very impactful,” said Oldenburg. “At the end of the day it’s all about being ready to save lives when the flag goes up, and this competition builds medical skills, teamwork, confidence, and resiliency that will be vital attributes of an Air Force Combat Medic in the future.” Each challenge was made as real as possible by using scenario actors, prosthetics, makeup, and imitation blood. “Each team was faced with five very different challenges they may see in combat or otherwise,” said Oldenburg. “They’re scored on how well they meet the objectives of each scenario. At the end, the scores are tallied and a winner is determined.” On top of that, those competing were required to carry all their necessary medical equipment and wear helmets and body armor in more than 90 degree weather. After two days of fake blood, real sweat, but thankfully no tears, the title of USAFE EMT Rodeo winner went to members of the 48th Medical Group from RAF Lakenheath. Winners are scheduled to go to Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., to represent USAFE in the annual U.S. Air Force EMT Rodeo. “This was a fantastic event and went as well as we could have hoped for our first one in USAFE,” said Oldenburg. “In the future we hope to get more funding so that we subject our participants to even more immersive scenarios. We’re also looking at involving some of our joint partners in future events.”

Greater than its sum: Shapiro says goodbye to 21st TSC, Europe Story and photo by Sgt. Benjamin Northcutt 21st Theater Sustainment Command The outgoing commander of U.S. Army Europe’s two-star sustainment command said the command was greater than the sum of its pieces, during his change of command ceremony, July 31, at Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern. Maj. Gen. Steven A. Shapiro relinquished command of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command to Lt. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, U.S. Army Europe commander, before Maj. Gen. Christopher O. Mohan assumed command. Mohan becomes the 23rd commanding general in the history of the 21st TSC since 1965. Shapiro will go on to be the Army Sustainment Command commander at Rock Island, Illinois, where he will replace Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, the 21st TSC’s former commanding general. Shapiro expressed his gratitude to each of the command’s subordinate units to accomplish the sustainment

command’s mission for U.S. Army Europe. “The vision was to become something bigger than the sum of our pieces,” Shapiro said. “That, to me, is getting everyone rowing in the same direction. I appreciate being able to take some time in the last couple years working with these units and becoming something bigger than just our companies, just our battalions, just our brigades and becoming something bigger for United States Army Europe.” For Shapiro, this marks the end of his fifth — and most likely final — assignment in Europe. “This is the last time I’ll stand on a parade field and would be able to salute the German national anthem,” Shapiro said. “And when I do that, I think about the great times we’ve had in Germany and our great German allies, but I think of all our allies. Without the alliance we wouldn’t able to transit Europe. Without the alliance, ship one wouldn’t be able to come in.”

Cavoli said that the Shapiro’s previous experience in Europe clearly served as a benefit during his time in command. “This was general Shapiro’s fifth tour in Europe — and it showed,” Cavoli said. “In addition to his duties as the 21st TSC commander, general Shapiro has also served as the senior responsible officer for most of our forces west of Wiesbaden. In multiple countries across Europe.” Cavoli described the 21st TSC as “the engine that makes the U.S. Army in Europe go” and described how 21st TSC influences much of the U.S. Army’s operations in Europe. “Steve, under your leadership this command has grown, and it has expanded, and it has exceeded all expectations,” Cavoli said. “You have turned this command into a schoolhouse for advanced logistics.” Cavoli said the unique role and importance of the 21st TSC necessitated the most qualified to lead the command. “The commander of Army Materiel

Command and the senior logistician in the Army told me how important the 21st TSC is not just to the Army in Europe and not just to U.S. European Command, but to the entire nation’s defense strategy,” Cavoli said. “He told me that he had to send the best guy he had to replace general Shapiro. And then he dropped the name Chris Mohan on me. Chris, you come so highly recommended. Your brilliant career is well known in the Army and we’re excited and lucky to have you.” Mohan thanked Cavoli for the opportunity to take command of the 21st TSC. This is Mohan’s first tour in Germany after having orders twice before, and being subsequently diverted each of the first two times. Mohan pledged dedication to the Soldiers and mission of the 21st TSC. “From the time I grab the colors to the time I let them go, I am all in,” said Mohan. “I am 100 percent dedicated to the mission and to your success. I look forward to learning and working with all of you, and continue to build on what Shapiro has accomplished.”

Maj. Gen. Steven Shapiro, outgoing Commanding General of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, passes the 21st TSC colors to Lt. Gen. Christopher Cavoli, commanding general U.S. Army Europe, during the 21st TSC change of command ceremony July 31 on Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern. The passing of the colors signifies the return of responsibility of which the commander was entrusted in and to ensure the unit is never without officer leadership.

LRMC offers last-minute school, sports physicals for KMC students Story by Alofagia Oney Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will be hosting appointmentbased Back To School Physicals at the hospital’s Heaton Auditorium, Aug. 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will afford parents an opportunity to conduct last-minute school and sports physicals before the start of the school year but parents are urged not to wait until Aug. 24 and schedule an appointment during regular clinic hours if possible. The LRMC Pediatrics Clinic, which typically only provides services to TRICARE Prime beneficiaries empaneled to the clinic, will open the school physicals to all students in U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland Pfalz and Ramstein Air Base, regardless of their sponsor’s branch of service or whether they are military or civilian. Non-TRICARE beneficiaries will need to complete a third-party insurance form for billing purposes. Additionally, while the event is open to them, non-TRICARE beneficiaries should follow-up with their regular primary care provider if recommended by the doctor or nurse practitioner.

Kynion advises that parents book follow-up appointments with the child’s primary care provider. “Because we anticipate a stationto-station type of event, and we want to get parents and children in and out as quickly as possible without com-

promising the quality and safety of our healthcare delivery, children may not be examined by their normal primary care provider, and the doctor or nurse practitioner administering the exam won’t know the child’s medical history,” said Kynion. “It is important for

parents to follow-up with their child’s PCM should a provider at the event recommend it.” For more information visit the official social media page, www.fb.com/ LRMCOfficialPage.

Richard Kynion, the chief medical officer at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, wants parents to know that this Soldier Readiness Processing style school physicals event does not replace routine appointments with a primary care provider. “The point of this event is simply to ensure that the child is fit to participate in school activities,” said Kynion, a pediatrician who also serves as the deputy commander for medical services at LRMC. “Yes, your child will go through stations for things like hearing and vision tests, but he or she will also have time with a provider who will give a more thorough examination for the purposes of the school physical.” Kynion noted that his experience with mass school physical events at other military medical treatment facilities usually uncover medical issues of which parents and children were not aware. Should that occur,

LRMC Soldier to represent USAREUR at Army ten-miler Running between inpatient call lights is how he gets his training in, McCray lightheartedly added. Although not all team members will travel to Washington this fall, the Soldiers believe the experience not only improved their physical fitness, but also enhanced camaraderie as well. “It’s a cool way to get to go and do something and there’s a lot of camaraderie when you actually get there,” said Runco. “I took (the qualifier) as a challenge,” said Pfc. Ruben Ferreira, an operating room specialist at LRMC. “You feel proud of yourself. You’re actually doing something, getting out of your comfort zone, and just going out there and just doing it, despite the results.” The 35th anniversary of the race will start and finish at the Pentagon and celebrates the spirt of sport and the spirit of a Nation with over 35,000 participants. by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Soldiers across Europe competed to represent U.S. Army Europe during a ten-mile race, held in Grafenwöhr, Germany, June 22. The race pitted Soldiers against one another to determine the top six male and female Soldiers to represent Team USAREUR in the U.S. Army Ten-Miler race, in Washington D.C., Oct. 13. Five Soldiers from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center earned top honors as the only team to complete the run, with one member qualifying for Team USAREUR.

“I ran this (qualifier) last year,” said Spc. Mark Kogo, an operating room specialist at LRMC. “I submitted a team roster (of LRMC Soldiers) and as individuals. Soldiers run by themselves but at the end of the race, they total times as a team.” In an attempt to put a team together, Kogo reached out to fellow LRMC Soldiers and trained with them leading up to the race. However, sporadic work schedules made training as a team difficult, with some Soldiers working second and third shifts. For 1st Lts. William McCray and Paige Runco, both medical-surgical nurses, an overnight shift preceded the qualifier.

Regardless, the Soldiers all agree the tiring sprint was worth the missed hours of sleep. “We get to represent something bigger than ourselves,” said Runco. “LRMC is such a small base in Germany,” said Kogo. “You’re (at the qualifier) with all the participants and representing the whole hospital. I think it’s cool and really awesome.” Finishing sixth overall, McCray was the only member of the team to earn a spot on Team USAREUR, with an estimated finishing time of 1 hour, 4 minutes. “You’re chasing the dream. I don’t know what pace that’s at, but I’m trying to catch that,” said McCray.

DoDEA student takes career readiness to a whole new level by Ken Robinson Kaiserslautern High School Technology Sponsor

Kaiserslautern High School graduate obtains impressive IT industry certification during his summer break. While most graduates try to relax over the summer, travel a bit and enjoy what could be their last European experience, Matthew Mercen spent the past six weeks hunched over a computer in hopes to become a certified CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Specialist (CSIS). The CSIS is not just any certification. To obtain this highly respected title, one must obtain three very difficult IT certifications (CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, and the CompTIA Security+ certifications). Each of these industry certifications, in their own right, are highly sought after and signify competency in a particular field of Information Technology. Matthew Mercen earned his CompTIA A+ certification while still a senior at KHS. Both Matthew and two other KHS students ( Junior Ethan Cooper and Sophomore Stephen Moore) received their A+ certifications as part of their involvement

in the DoDEA Computer Service and Support course (A+ certification). Additional certification preparatory classes, to include both CompTIA Network+ and Linux (LPIC-1), were held after school as part of the KHS IT certification program. Field professionals from the community, such as AFCEA mentors,

helped co-teach these intensive 8-week preparatory sessions. Eighty percent of all students who elected to take their respective exams obtained their certification. Exams such as the rigorous CompTIA A+ and Linux (LPIC-1) required passing of two tests each. Sophomore Ian Moore passed his second Linux

exam, also during the summer, making him the school’s first Linux certified administrator. IT certifi cations have become a necessity in many industries. In fact, all military members, civilians and contractors who currently work on DoD networks are required to obtain their CompTIA Security+ certification. IT certifications are so respected that, in many cases, supersede college degrees for specific IT professions. Career ready in the IT industry truly does mean certification ready. Matt Mercen is one of only a few high school students who fully understands the value of IT certifications and how their acquisition can play a pivotal role in his career. By obtaining all three CompTIA certifications, and of course his newly acquired stackable CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Specialist (CSIS) certification, Matthew is now extremely marketable and can comfortably begin to search for employment in whichever market he so chooses. For more information about the KHS IT Certification Program, please contact Ken Robinson at ken.robinson@dodea.edu.

LRMC coder aims to put Landstuhl on map

Thomas Holzberger (center), a medical coder with the Patient Administration Division, points out popular and unknown attractions to coworkers Mary Jones and Kamarra Brown. Holzberger has volunteered for years as an unofficial tour guide for Americans at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, embodying the spirit of the hospital’s mantra, “Selfless Service.”

Story and photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center A long family relationship with the U.S. Forces drove Thomas Holzberger to seek employment at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in the early 2000s. But it was a love for the hospital’s namesake that led him to offer Americans a crash course in German culture. Holzberger can trace his family tree back 250 years when his ancestors migrated from nearby Austria. Although his family’s roots are interesting in itself, he hopes to arouse American curiosity and teach them about his town, region and country during their tours in Germany. “My family has a real close relationship with the American Forces,” said Holzberger, whose father was a NATO Soldier and mother worked at LRMC for over 40 years. “My mom’s family is from (Landstuhl) and my dad’s family is originally from Austria, 250 years ago.”

As a child, Holzberger’s aunt, who worked at Landstuhl’s City Hall, roused his interest in history and his hometown. Today, he embodies the hospital’s motto of selfless service by paying it forward to American coworkers, who may be unprepared for German culture. “(Holzberger) invited my spouse and me to go to some of his favorite restaurants with him and showed us some of his favorite menu items,” said Dr. James Rundell, a psychiatrist at LRMC’s Embedded Behavioral Health program. Family ties to the U.S. also includes Holzberger’s great aunt, who worked at the nearby Vogelweh Commissary in the 1960s, and a brother who is currently employed by the U.S. Air Force. Holzberger himself has nearly two decades of employment with the U.S. Army and currently serves as a medical coder as part of LRMC’s Patient Administration Division. In this position, the Landstuhl native was introduced to multiple providers where he

has extended an invitation to paint the town red. “I like to teach people about (the region) because it’s a great place to live, and it’s really a rich history,” said Holzberger. “If people hear Landstuhl, they think the hospital outside of the U.S., but what’s behind it, they may not know.” Justifying Holzberger’s passion, history shows Landstuhl having its earliest settlements 2,500 years ago during Celtic times, with continued occupation during Roman rule and into the present. Eventually the village transformed into a spa resort. “Just the hospital’s history itself (is interesting),” said Holzberger, noting a few current structures were founded during the Third Reich and remain occupied today. “There are some details (Americans) may not notice right away, but they are (historical) sites.” While Holzberger volunteers his free time to get Americans better acquainted with the region, he’s hope-

ful it will open their eyes to take in what’s around them and better prepare them for their tours. “(Holzberger) taught us to use the train system, told us about his favorite shopping secrets and locations, and how get the lowest train fares for places we wanted to go,” said Rundell, currently on his third year in Germany. “We’ve actually remained friends since then. That ‘extra mile’ has significantly enhanced our experience of living in Germany.” For Holzberger, going that “extra mile” is only part of being hospitable to his American coworkers, confident his personal tours will build bridges between Germans and Americans for the next generation. “A lot of people get here, enjoy working here but want to get away (from Landstuhl),” said Holzberger. “I would like to interest people so they can get to know the area, get to know the people, let them experience what it’s like to live here, and not just be stationed here.”

by Thomas Warner contributing writer It’s perhaps the most unique city within a few hours driving distance from the Kaiserslautern Military Community but most people here have never driven south, crossed the Rhine near Baden-Baden and experienced Strasbourg, France. It’s without a doubt the nearest city to us with the most to offer. Altogether historic, ancient, modern and stylish, the city has 250,000 people living on the inside perimeter but around 500,000 total if you include the outer edges. It’s not a metropolis by any means, but Strasbourg is in many ways comparable to the much larger Paris in that it has a certain sprawl to it that’s easy to navigate. If you tell a European native you are from Strasbourg or you’ve been to Strasbourg, they give you instant credibility for being in-the-know about what’s really good in this part of the world. The main attraction of this fantastic city is the cathedral — building started in the 12th century — that looms large over the skyline. Strasbourg Muenster (Cathedral) was intended to have two spires but the second one was never finished. Made of a granite-like local pink Rose des Vosges sandstone, the church’s ornamental front entrance areas feature intricate sculptures of a variety of ancient biblical and period events. This is a fantastic zoom lens photo opportunity as you imagine master sculptors and builders hand crafting the building through the years. Strasbourg is indeed home to the NATO/EU Eurocorps creation and there is the popular astronomical clock that features a pay-to-watch chime event each day, but that sort of stuff is for sure worth skipping. Instead, take a look at the Strasbourg skyline from the top level of the cathedral or on the terrace at the Musée De L’Art Moderne,

where you can sip a refreshment, eat a sandwich or salad, and just enjoy relaxing from the long strolls you are bound to take if you come here. Walking is commonplace in Strasbourg where, like Amsterdam, nearly all the residents appear physically fit and in shape. Tramway is Strasbourg’s wonderful above ground train transport system, along with tons of city busses, and many VELHOP bicycles lined up on sidewalk racks, ready for rental. Walking thoroughfares and a city layout that is easy to navigate on foot make Strasbourg alluring for people of all ages. A 15-minute train ride will take you from downtown Strasbourg to the first German town on the route, Kehl, and there is a remarkable fluidity between the two countries that has always been visible in this fun-loving town. “Strasbourg and the Alsace area have been part of both Germany and France alternately through the years,” says Jeanne, a longtime resident and expert on the city. “There is a local dialect spoken here and people from both countries understand it. There is a marvelous restaurant, Aux Armes de Strasbourg, at Gutenberg Square, that is very Alsacian but also very German. There are paintings on the wall and interesting woodwork. They serve very good dishes that are representative of both countries and with a good balance between price and quality.” There are many restaurants scattered around Strasbourg that specialize in the Franco-German delicacy, Flammkuchen, which is pizza-like, with thin crust topped with ham or sausage and crème fraiche. It’s just as good as what you might find in Rothenburg and Munich or at a small festival in Landstuhl. Another brilliantly-run restaurant is La Maison Kammerzell, which operates inside Strasbourg’s oldest dwelling, a hotel dating back to the 15th century. La Maison Kammerzell serves

fish and pork dishes indigenous to the Alsace area and a variety of interesting desserts are served to top off these hearty meals. A trip to Strasbourg will make you want to return for many more visits, as it is a place that American people love to take relatives who visit here. Driving south, down through Zweibruecken is the best way to see the backroads and it’s tempting to stop along the way and sample the culture that in one word could be described as ‘welcoming.’ There are places to buy jellies, jams, yard décor woodworking and birdhouses, or wine. The wine industry is alive and well around Strasbourg. One romantic place we walked to for a nightcap

was the splendidly run XX Wine bar, which had cheese samplings spread out on small boards and allowed us to unwind after a good meal elsewhere before heading back to tuck into our rental apartment beds. Wineries are situated in and around small towns, overlooked by the Vosges mountain range that covers much of the southern expanse below Strasbourg. Many of the wineries are between Colmar and Strasbourg, all within 15-20 minute drives by car or on board the many coaches and busses that shuttle people to these areas daily. There are tours of the cellars and facilities, complimentary tastings, items for sale, and lots of time at the end to do things back inside the city limits.

When shopping for typicallyFrench items, people gravitate to two areas of the city close by one another and containing astounding indoor architecture. La Galleries de Lafayette and La Printemps are open daily and not the sorts of department stores you might find in American malls. Both can tend to be pricey but each contains authentic merchandise representing the Alsace area and France as a whole. Keeping with the theme that Strasbourg itself is a walking town and flat enough to allow for long treks, the best area to walk and look is the La Petite France district. This part of town is Strasbourg as it was centuries ago. Most of the dwellings trace to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and sit along beautiful canals with shops, restaurants and a general pedestrian-friendly feel to the area. La Petite France is a splendid place to spend time during fall, when leaves are changing but the weather hasn’t gotten too cool. Different parts of La Petite France are reminiscent of Venice, Paris, Amsterdam and Bruges, keeping with the city’s seeming desire or quest to try and be all things to all people. The city features one of Europe’s most modern train stations and airports. A website description of Strasbourg reads, “Europe is alive here – the Europe of democracy, the Europe which belongs to its citizens, is being constructed here to deal with the major

Page 27

issues currently facing our society, such as education, industrial modernization, solidarity, the change in energy sources and eco-responsibility,” as quoted on www.en.strasbourg.eu. Those words offer the Strasbourgian mantra or theme, in a city that never ceases to flaunt its cultural diversity, with both strong roots to the past and a continuing push to stay on the cutting edge or what is current and what is still to come. See works by Rodin, Monet, or Picasso at the Museum of Modern Art, the many aged items showcased at the Musée Historique, stage performances or music concerts at L’Opera House, La Theatre National and La Maillon performing arts center, ballet and dance at the South Pole (Pole Sud), the annual Musica festival, and the venerable Museum de L’ouevre Notre Dame which holds artifacts discovered around the city’s famous cathedral. The biggest protestant church in Europe — St. Thomas — has a vibrant congregation and something going on all the time. St. Pierre Le Vieux is a joint catholic and protestant venture that also serves a wide community of theists. Pont Couverts (covered bridges) are sights to behold that date back to the construction of a protective wall in this 2000-yearold town. What’s not to like about Strasbourg? Take a trip there and see if you can figure it out for yourself.
