Aug. 27 marked the first day of school for the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Large crowds of students students populated, and will continue to populate, the streets while parents rush to drop their kids off for school.

With that in mind, it’s important to remember school days bring congestion; children on bikes are quickly rushing to get to school before the tardy bell rings and school buses are making stops to pick up passengers. “Please plan ahead and expect high traffi c volSee BACK TO SCHOOL, Page 7

An added benefit of the exercise is the ability to utilize the Romanian airspace to perform low-level flying. “The low-level flying we can conduct in the country is great training for us,” said Forsyth. “It’s training we don’t get to do at home station.” Each year, the team changes the scenarios up to keep

Exercise your right to vote responsibly

by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In case someone wasn’t aware, it’s an election year. The commercials are on during every break in broadcasting. Social media sites are flooded with advertisements and claims from every political source imaginable. Friends, family and even complete strangers argue in the comment sections. How does a military member negotiate this treacherous path? Easy — follow the Department of Defense guidelines on politics and voting found in DoD Directive 1344.10, “Political Activities by Members of the Armed Forces” and Air Force Instruction 51-902, “Political Activities by Members of the U.S. Air Force.” “In today’s age, especially with social media, if you’re saying things online or endorsing someone or doing something in a way that’s not in line with the AFI, you could potentially get yourself in trouble,” said Capt. Matthew Cole, 86th Airlift Wing chief of administrative law. “It’s important to know what your rights are, but also what your restrictions are.” Cole gave the example of someone posting on their Facebook page about their opinion on a presidential candidate. Airmen are within their rights to say they support

a candidate, however, they cannot attempt to motivate others to vote for their candidate. Even if an Airman doesn’t use their rank or status as a military member to attract voters to their candidate, attempting to entice voters to a specific candidate is still a violation under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The best way avoid any potential pitfall is to put a disclaimer at the end of the post stating that the views and opinions expressed are those of an individual and do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of the Air Force, Cole said. Airmen should remember that as a military member — in and out of uniform — they are a representative of the armed forces and are subject to the UCMJ. “Punishments vary depending on the level of the violation,” said Cole. “If you’re in uniform standing next to Candidate A saying, ‘I love this woman,’ that’s a much bigger deal than just saying, ‘I like Candidate B,’ on Facebook. It will be up to what a court decides.” Punishment could be a monetary fine or a reduction in rank, Cole said. While subject to the UCMJ on or off duty, it doesn’t mean Airmen can’t participate or express their political opinions.

“The general rule whenever putting anything online, or saying or doing anything, is to always remember, am I doing this of my own will and in my own capacity as an individual or am I doing this on behalf of the Air Force,” said Cole. “It’s always important to distinguish yourself and what you’re saying and doing from the Air Force.” The AFI is a good source of information regarding specific instructions to follow during this political season, said Cole. AFI 51-902 states Airmen may “Register to vote, vote, and express a personal opinion on political candidates and issues, but not as a representative of the Air Force or DoD.” It also adds that Airmen may “Promote and encourage others to exercise their voting franchise, if such promotion does not constitute use of their official authority or influence to interfere with the outcome of any election.” “It’s obviously ok to say, ‘go vote,’” said Cole. “In fact, I’m sure the Air Force would encourage you to encourage others to vote. If you encourage people to vote for a specific candidate, then you’re crossing the line.” When it talks about not using official position, it means that commanders, first sergeants, superintendents, or supervisors may not

force someone to vote. If someone feels intimidated to vote or an Airman feels they might get in trouble, then it’s no longer promoting general voting, it’s more like a threat, said Cole. Airmen may join political clubs and attend meetings while not in uniform, sign petitions for potential legislation, and write letters to editors or commentaries as long as the letter clearly states that the opinions expressed are those of an individual and not representative of the Air Force or DoD. “If you can avoid it, don’t sign your name with your rank,” said Cole. “Also, don’t mention that you’re in the Air Force. It’s not necessarily 100 percent not allowed, but it’s just highly encouraged that you distance yourself f rom the Air Force and make it known that you’re writing this based on your own personal view and not in any way representing the Air Force.” On the other hand, Airmen may not march or ride in partisan parades, display large political signs, posters or banners, use or allow use of their image as billboards, posters or signs; and more. For more information, read AFI 51-902 to ensure compliance during this political season, or contact the 86th Airlift Wing Legal Off ice at 480-5911.

Motorists are asked to apply caution and to have understanding for any inconveniences related thereto. Door-to-door salesmen Living in Europe you may come across doorto-door salesmen offering to sell a wide variety of items ranging from artwork to produce. If you decide to utilize these services, the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron urges you to take caution with your transactions. Make sure the price of the goods is clearly established. If you are using a credit/debit card, ensure you double check the transaction total before signing any receipts – read over the entire receipt! If you do not feel comfortable using your credit/debit card, request to use cash instead. Vogelweh pedestrian bridge update Construction is complete for the pedestrian bridge connecting Vogelweh Housing to the main base and schools. Bad Duerkheim wine festival This year’s festival will be from Sept. 7 to 11 and Sept. 14 to 17. Last year’s festival was great, but there were also more than 26 alcohol-related incidents within the first four days of the festival. Many of these could have been prevented if people remembered to drink and behave responsibly. Though the Polizei, U.S. Army military police, and 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron will be out to ensure everyone has a safe and fun time, make sure you have a plan (and a backup plan!) on how to get home BEFORE you drink. While at the festival, you can make your way to the Polizei substation (near the North entrance, adjacent to the DRK tent) or call 112, which works all over Germany, for any emergencies. Be safe, and have a great festival! Fluoride: Nature’s cavity fighter by Airman 1st Class Mia Johnson and Capt. Emily Steiner 86th Dental Squadron In the year 2018, we know more about dental therapeutic agents than ever before. However, the positive effects of fluoride have been documented since 1901. It has been established that children who have the advantage of optimal fluoride, a parent-assisted oral hygiene program, proper diet and regular dental visits have minimal or no tooth decay or gum disease. Bottom line: fluoride is an important component of preventive dentistry, playing an essential role in maintaining children’s primary (baby) teeth and aiding in the development of strong permanent (adult) teeth. Today, there are many misconceptions about the advantages and disadvantages of fluoride. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to inform parents on the facts about fluoride. Starting with the basics first: what is fluoride and how does it work?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is released from rocks into our Earth’s soil, water, and air. On a microscopic level, fluoride performs three defensive roles to protect your child’s teeth. First, fluoride has the ability to strengthen teeth like calcium strengthens bones, resulting in teeth that are much more resilient to the effects of bacterial acids. Second, fluoride has the ability to help arrest small cavities in their earliest stages and repair the tooth through a process known as remineralization. Third, fluoride has the ability to kill the bacteria that cause cavities, preventing and/or arresting disease progression. There are two avenues through which teeth can obtain fluoride: when it is swallowed and when it is put onto the tooth surface. Fluoride that is swallowed usually comes from fluoridated water. More than 65 years of research and experience have shown that water fluoridation is safe and highly effective. Currently water fluoridation serves as a corner-

stone to any effective public health initiative to enhance the oral health in our communities. Not to mention, fluoridation of community water is supported by the American Dental Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Academy, and the World Health Organization. The greatest advantage to water fluoridation is its convenience and reliability. An important note to our families living overseas is that many European countries do not take part in water fluoridation. Fluoride is added to the tap water on Ramstein, Landstuhl, and Sembach, but fluoride is not added to the tap water on Vogelweh. Those living off base have the opportunity to purchase bottled water with fluoride at our local commissaries. These items can be easily identified by their red bottle caps. When fluoride is placed on the surface of your teeth, it is called topical fluoride. Fluoride toothpastes and mouth

rinses contain topical fluoride, and your dentist can apply a topical fluoride varnish to the teeth. When considering toothpaste and mouth rinse, there are some important matters to consider when it comes to your child’s age. First, parents should keep an eye on children under the age of 6 when they are utilizing fluoridated dental products. For children 6 months (or first tooth) to 3 years of age, only a smear (or about the size a grain of rice) of fluoride toothpaste should be utilized. For children 3 years of age and older, place only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on the child’s toothbrush at each brushing. Lastly, children under the age of 6 should not use a fluoride mouth rinse because of the increased likelihood of ingestion. We hope you found this information helpful and that it left you feeling more confident and competent about fluoride’s role in preventing childhood cavities. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your dental provider.

86th Communication Squadron holds Summer IT Clean Up by Airman 1st Class Ariel Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Communications Squadron Information Technology Asset Management team is scheduled to hold the 2018 Summer IT Clean Up on Ramstein Air Base. The ITAM team is taking old, broken, or unwanted tech equipment at building 2126 door 4 until 3 p.m. today. “The entire asset management team has put forth an immense amount of effort to assist members across the base,” said Airman 1st Class Spencer Koschmeder, 86th CS client systems technician. “The Summer IT clean-up has been allowing organizations to have a focal point to drop off their outdated communications equipment for the users that were having difficulty setting aside the time to do the drop-off themselves.” The ITAM team encourages organizations around base to take a little time out of their busy

schedules to clean out unused electronic equipment in desks, offices, and closets. Many of the materials used in making electronics can be recovered and reused, including plastics, glass, and metal. However, electronics can also contain toxic substances, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, if not carefully disposed. After receiving the electronics, ITAM will properly remove the assets from user’s accounts and turn them in for proper disposal. Allowed items are computers, tablets, smartphones, cellphones without batteries, hard drives, printers with no ink, monitors, keyboards, computer mice, scanners, fax machines, cables, and docking stations. The Ramstein Air Base recycling center, across from building 2162 and the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center, is also available year-round for proper disposal of electronic equipment. Receipts of assets will be provided at the time of drop off.

August 31, 2018 BACK TO SCHOOL from Page 1 umes, limited parking around the Ramstein schools, and delays at the gates,” said Jennifer Hahn, 86th Mission Support Group School Liaison Offi cer. “Be careful and watch out for people on the sidewalks and buses making their way to the schools.” Hahn said traffic safety is crucial, both vehicular and pedestrian, and children should be sure to use a crosswalk when crossing streets and wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before crossing. “Ensure your child understands not to walk, stand, or cross the street directly before or behind a bus,” Hahn said. “Follow your school’s pick-up and drop-off procedures and if you are unsure on the procedure, contact your child’s school.” It is increasingly important for drivers to slow down and pay attention when children are present — especially before and after school. To heighten safety, extra security forces patrols are on site to ensure safety and assist with traffic flow.

Mark your calendars for the 2018 Ramstein Bazaar Mark your calendars — the 2018 Ramstein Bazaar is quickly approaching! Whether you’re new to the community and looking forward to your first bazaar or you’ve been coming to the bazaar for years, you won’t want to miss this four-day shopping event. With more than 125 vendors from around the world, there will be something for everyone at the 54th annual Ramstein Bazaar. This year’s event will be held from Sept. 13 to Sept. 16 on the Ramstein Air Base flight line. This is a great opportunity for you to pick up some treasures here in Germany, especially since a percentage of every sale goes back to the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The 2017 bazaar raised more than $290,000 for scout troop projects, school activities, base events, and more. For example, the RhinelandPfalz Quilt Guild received funding to make baby quilts for the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Proceeds also went toward a Troop 166 Eagle Scout project to build a sensory room for

Vogelweh Elementary School, and the 86th Medical Group nurses and med techs were also able to use bazaar funds for a local celebration of National Nurses Week. During the bazaar, two hangars and a giant tent will be filled with one-of-a-kind items like pottery, antiques, rugs, furniture, wine, and more. Even though Christmas is still a few months away, this is the perfect chance to stock up on unique gifts for your family back home with plenty of time to ship them. While you’re at it, pick up a few things for yourself to enjoy – remember, a portion of every single sale will benefit the community. After you’ve worked up an appetite with all that shopping, step outside to sample food from nearly 30 private organizations. Crowd favorites lumpia and bratwurst will be served alongside BBQ ribs, fresh-squeezed lemonade, and more. These amazing food vendors will be there throughout the bazaar so there’s plenty of time to try a little bit of everything.

Everyone is welcome to visit the bazaar but only DOD and NATO ID card holders with SOFA status can make purchases. If you’re bringing small children, be advised that Thursday and Friday are stroller days; on Saturday and Sunday, you will be asked to leave your strollers outside. All sales are in US dollars and can be made with cash, check, Visa, and MasterCard. Each time you buy something, you’ll be asked to sign a sheet of paper to ensure that money from every purchase goes back to the KMC. The bazaar is an 86th Force Support Squadron event that is produced by the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club (ROSC) and would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers from the community. If you’d like to be a part of this incredible event, please visit our website (www. ramsteinbazaar.org) and click the “Ways to Help” tab to sign up. Disasters happen, prepare now

by Erinn Burgess Installation Management Command Public Affais Disaster can strike when you least expect it. Recent world events, such as hurricanes and wildfires, demonstrate how important it is to have a plan when the unexpected becomes a reality. The theme of this year’s National Preparedness Month in September is, “Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How.” U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Emergency Management emphasizes the importance of preparing ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. The garrison EM team helps the community prepare by providing guidance on critical items needed for sustainment, as well as what to do, where to go, and who to contact in the event of a disaster or emergency, explained garrison EM Specialist Jeremy Watson. “In the event of an emergency, the garrison will provide temporary shelter, food, water, medical support and more,” Watson said. During an off-post emergency, the first line of help for mass care services will be the Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk — the German federal agency for technical relief — which will have a liaison for U.S. personnel present once the EM team engages, Watson explained. EM also encourages community members to familiarize themselves

with Ready Army, the Army’s proactive campaign to create a culture of preparedness. The campaign emphasizes four key pillars: Be informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved. Be informed Watson explained that the best way to stay informed is by registering for the garrison’s mass warning notification system, AtHoc. “AtHoc is our primary means of contacting the affected populace in an emergency situation, no matter whether they are on or off post,” he said. “During a sustained emergency, AtHoc will also be the primary means of providing critical information such as where shelter, food and water are located.” Watson noted the importance of keeping your information up to date in the AtHoc registry to ensure you receive these updates. To register for AtHoc, click the AtHoc button on the left side of the garrison website at www.rp.army.mil. Registration is available to all Common Access Card holders, and these users may register their dependents for updates as well. Make a plan Families should make and practice emergency plans. The Department of Homeland Security’s website (www. ready.gov) provides checklists to consider when creating plans and provides downloadable starter plans for

parents, kids, commuters, pet owners and more. Build a kit Watson explained whether the emergency is natural or man-made, critical infrastructure may be damaged and could leave those affected without power, water and sewage for several days. “During those first few critical days, we are focused on search and rescue operations, mission assurance and continuity for our Army units, infrastructure, and last but not least — our Army community. It may take a few days for the cavalry to come and help those affected, so we ask that you prepare by having at least 72 hours of provisions on hand,” Watson said. He listed canned goods, water, baby and pet supplies as a good starting point. While preparing provisions, Watson said not to forget about important documents such as certificates, passports, ID cards and even local currency. “Take the time to copy those documents to keep with you should you be away from your residence or separated from one another. For those living off post, keep a bill showing your residence. Without it, local authorities may not let you back into the area,” he explained. Get involved During the month of September, USAG RP EM will host several

events throughout the community. Community members are invited to stop by and learn more about preparedness: • Sept. 4 and 5: Joint information booths with Air Force EM personnel at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Exchange and commissary on Ramstein Air Base. • Sept. 13: Information booth at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. • Sept. 17: Information booth at Baumholder Exchange. USAG RP Commander Col. Jason Edwards echoed Watson’s sentiments regarding the importance of having a plan. “We can’t allow ourselves or our family members to be caught off guard in the event of a natural disaster or emergency. Individual readiness and family readiness are equal to mission readiness,” Edwards said. “There’s no way of knowing when we may be faced with an unexpected situation that requires quick thinking and a fast response — the best thing we can do is prepare for these scenarios before they happen and remain ready at all times.” For assistance making a plan, building a kit, or any other readiness procedures, call USAG RP EM at 541-3009 or 0611-143-541-3009. Cyber readiness evaluation keeps military info, systems safe by Mary Ann Davis Installation Management Command Public Affais

Graphic by vs148 / Shutterstock.com

In today’s high-tech military, cybersecurity plays a critical part of defending information and computer systems from hackers. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz demonstrated its technology protection proficiency during a U.S. Army Europe Cyber Readiness Evaluation, Aug. 13-17. The assessment examined the garrison’s adherence to cybersecurity and traditional security controls, said Tracy McManus, USAG RP Information System Security manager and acting Information Management Office director. “The inspection verified that the garrison is maintaining a good security posture — cyber and traditional,” McManus said. “Some of the areas that were examined included standard operating procedures, user training, appointment orders and security reviews.” Although cybersecurity is a part of the IMO mission, it’s also the user’s responsibility to ensure confidential information and systems stay safeguard-

parkrun

Seewoog parkrun in RamsteinMiesenbach will soon be the 9th parkrun event to launch in Germany and will be officially opened by the Mayor of Ramstein, Ralf Hechler, on Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. It will take place at the same time every Saturday thereafter. Seewog parkrun is the biggest running event in the world. It is a global initiative supporting free, weekly, timed 5-km events, organised by local volunteers. Everyone is welcome at parkrun - to walk, jog, run or volunteer. The aim is to create happier and healthier communities through participation of this - simple to organise and attend - regular event. “Thanks to the work of our tireless volunteers in Ramstein, the support of the mayor of Ramstein and the international parkrun community, we now consider Ramstein to be part of the global parkrun family,” says Cahterine Ilic, co-event director. Registration is free at http://www. parkrun.com.de/. You can register from Aug. 24 for the Ramstein Seewoog event. Community The Seewoog parkrun course is a real treat for anyone who likes to be in direct contact with nature. The idyllic lakeside

start and finish is complemented by a midsection trail run through the forest, which offers a varied terrain. Following each weekly parkrun, all participants are invited to spend some time together over a post-parkrun-coffee at the Seewoog kiosk. “The social aspect of parkrun is as important as the physical activity itself,” emphasizes Ilic. She adds “We want to help make it easy for the Kaiserslautern Military Community to mix with locals and meet new people. We are particularly pleased to create a special opportunity for community building and getting to know each other through parkrun.”

ed, McManus said. Careless handling of confidential information, leaving personally identifiable information or common access cards unsecured and users clicking on phishing links are some cybersecurity issues that were inspected as well. “I welcome any inspection that reinforces cyber security,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Jason Edwards. “We did very well in our inspection, but there are always ways to improve our readiness. It is imperative we are vigilant and always thinking about how to best protect and defend our critical resources.” Lastly, McManus congratulated the USAG RP team for its efforts. “My estimation is that we collectively maintain a high level of vigilance and awareness of security and cybersecurity in particular. This is very important because it is the individual’s commitment to security that adds up to create a space where we can all pursue the garrison mission unhindered and unchallenged,” he said. “And, we must never forget that security is an ongoing line of effort, and we must continually and consistently strive to improve.”

Ramstein-Miesenbach and jog or walk the five kilometers, or even volunteer to help with the event. If you have not yet registered, please do so before your first parkrun below. Registration for Seewoog parkrun is live from Aug. 24 at https://www.parkrun. com.de/register/ Registration takes only a few minutes. Then print out your personal barcode. This is your ID card every Saturday at every parkrun event in the world. Wherever you want to run, just bring your printed barcode with you and be on time for 9 a.m. Further information about Seewoog parkrun can be found at www.parkrun. com.de/seewoog

To ensure users are constantly cyber vigilant, follow these tips: • Maintain positive control of your common access card. If you leave your workstation, take it with you. • Guard PII data. Keep it covered and make sure it is locked up when not in use. • Scan-to-email requires CAC authentication. Ask your supervisor or IMO if there is a problem in your area. • Pick up your printouts right away, especially if they contain sensitive data. • If you leave your office empty, lock the door. The less access to unauthorized persons, the better. • Remember to label your media and properly destroy it when it is no longer needed.

What is parkrun? parkrun - is a weekly event for running, jogging, or walking over a distance of five kilometers. It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you wear. What matters is that you participate. parkrun starts every Saturday at 9 a.m. in 20 countries worldwide. More than 3.1 million people have participated in a parkrun since its launch in the UK in 2004. The events always take place in open spaces, for example in parks, on beaches or promenades. parkrun is free for all participants. You register once online and then participate in every parkrun run worldwide.

Help with parkrun - An Interesting Opportunity Occasionally helping at parkrun events is a great way to meet people, learn new things, and make a big contribution to community life. If you would like to join the volunteer roster to help, please email: seewoogteam@parkrun.com

Football season arrives for DODEA schools

Longtime rivals Ramstein and Kaiserslautern will square off next weekend to open the 2018 DODEA football season.

Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer College and professional football are ready to kick off their 2018 seasons and area high schools will be playing their first games in coming weeks. Ramstein will host longtime rival Kaiserslautern on Sept. 8 and Baumholder will start out September 22 with a road game at Brussels. Classes have now been in session a full week at Department of Defense Education Activity schools but football athletes began much earlier this summer, with two-a-day workouts and heavy conditioning leading up to their first games. The ultimate goal is to make a playoff run in late October and early November when the Europeans Championships take place.

Ramstein Royals Last season: 4-1 (division), 5-1 (overall) Sept. 8 vs. Kaiserslautern Sept. 15 vs. Stuttgart Sept. 22 at Vilseck Sept. 29 vs. Lakenheath Oct. 13 at Wiesbaden Oct. 20 at Kaiserslautern Oct. 27 Europeans semifinals Nov. 3 Europeans championship Ramstein did not stumble last season, making another appearance in the Division 1 championship game against Stuttgart. The Royals and Panthers were the top two teams in the standings for 2017 and the 26-21 victory by Stuttgart capped what was a competitive year throughout base schools in Europe. This is the third season for Ramstein coach Carter Hollenbeck and his squad enters 2018 as one of the favorites

to win a Division I championship. Ramstein has appeared in six of the past seven DODEA championship games and has the roster to duplicate those successes now. “We usually give it about 60 days after the season ends, then we shut the book on what happened for that school year — that chapter,” said Hollenbeck, an assistant coach at the school prior to taking the top job. “We tell the kids it’s in the past and we focus everything from that point on our goals and potential for the next year.” Part of closing the book involves finding replacements for graduated seniors and players whose families moved away, but it also means assessing the remaining talent and finding the best positional fit for each player. Ramstein had about 70 players out for initial tryouts and will use people this season in both varsity action and junior varsity games. “Good programs are always looking to the future and trying to get game experience for as many kids each season as possible,” Hollenbeck said. “We place a high value on junior varsity games as well as our varsity season. You want to see how they react to being in games and the pressures that come with that live action.” One new player for the Royals won’t require as much evaluation is Nick Scherzer, an All-Europe lineman for Division II champion Spangdahlem who moved to the KMC during the offseason. Scherzer is a senior now and is seen as a key figure on both the offensive and defensive lines for the 2018 Royals. Other linemen of note include juniors Logan Ridenbaugh and Kyle Lloyd, who may each wind up playing both offense and defense. All-Europe middle linebacker Bailey Holland

played a huge role in last year’s team and is ready for his senior season. Hollenbeck said returning seniors Cameron Chester and Naser Eaves, plus hard-nosed junior J.J. Little will be roaming the defensive backfield. Little and Eaves have plenty of offensive skill position experience and, as multisport participants, are two of the most versatile athletes in DODEA Division I. The Royals will have a new starting quarterback, with the trio of senior Jacob Steinbeck, junior Drew Hodges, and sophomore Kaleb Bellew showing the most promise during summer two-a-day workouts. Steinbeck came in and showed good mobility in last season’s Euro title game loss.

Kaiserslautern Raiders Last season: 1-4 (division), 1-5 (overall) Sept. 8 at Ramstein Sept. 15 vs. Lakenheath Sept. 22 at Wiesbaden Sept. 29 vs. Vilseck (HC) Oct. 13 at Stuttgart Oct. 20 vs. Ramstein Oct. 27 Europeans semifinals Nov. 3 Europeans championship Kaiserslautern enters 2018 with a new head coach and seeks positive results after winning just one game a season ago. New head coach Duke Allen and his group of assistants will forge the Raiders’ new mentality. Allen inherited several holdover players from Lyn Hairstone’s 2017 team and brings a grappler’s mindset after leading the wrestling program and teaching history and science classes previously for base schools at Sigonella, Italy, and Osan, Korea. “We had a really good first week after I arrived and we’re trying to keep that

going as we enter the weeks ahead,” said Allen. “The boys are working hard and I’ve got a great group of coaches here that are helping me. We are running hard and learning a lot.” Kaiserslautern students have moved into a brand new school this year and athletes from several sports spent the last days of summer going through practices on brand new fields, courts, and turf at the Vogelweh campus. Austin Higby is a senior Raider lineman who distinguished himself with shot put and discus success at last season’s Europeans track and field championships. Higby will play both offense and defense, as will a few of the other bigger bodies on the roster. Corey Coombs is a senior running back and will play in the defensive secondary. Quarterback Esteban Saldana returns under center and at free safety defensively but overall, the Raiders are fielding a very young team this season. Senior Cedric Ellis is expected to give spark to the KHS offense while Andrew Wells has practiced at both linebacker and running back. Brothers Wilbur and Solo Turgeon have transferred to Kaiserslautern after playing multiple sports last year at Baumholder High. Both will likely be starters in Kaiserslautern’s set-up this fall and as a new head coach, Allen said a main priority for building the Raiders into a competitive unit will be the establishment of depth at all positions. “We want to develop a lot of our younger players and we’ve got some good speed at different spots already,” Allen said. “We’ve got some great attitudes and the kids seem to be people who are willing to work hard. They are starting to come together and take care of one another.

Coach Phil Loyd and the Baumholder Buccaneers will be part of a new Division III grouping this season after going 4-2 last season.

Baumholder, all of Division 3 will play 6-man football Sept. 22 at Brussels Sept. 29 vs. Hohenfels (HC) Oct. 12 at AFNorth Oct. 20 vs. Ansbach Nov. 3 Europeans championship Baumholder and scattered other DODEA schools are feeling the pinch of limited available players so DODEA has been designated with four other schools this season for a 6-man football league play division. The new Division III lineup will include Baumholder, Ansbach, Hohenfels, AFNorth, and Brussels. “This move was based on populations at schools and us simply wanting our student athletes to be able to play in a safe environment,” said DODEA athletics director Kathlene Clemmons. “It would have been a difficult situation if these schools and our various coaches had not been willing to make the change. Populations change from year to year and it’s something we will continue to look at and evaluate each new year.” Head coach Phil Loyd enters his third season at Baumholder and said there is still a lot of enthusiasm for the coming campaign. His staff and players spent several days in the summer heat preparing for the new schedule. “We are excited to play and we have some talented kids who are giving their all during the preseason workouts,” said Loyd, a retired Marine who has coached and taught for about 30 years. “It’s going to be up to the kids to answer the challenge of six-man, after last year playing 11-man and posting a positive 4-2 season.” The 6-man rules are basically the same, but scores tend to be higher than 11-man football and each player takes on additional responsibilities. All players will

be eligible to block as well as catch passes and advance the football. “It’s a good thing that DODEA decided to move to 6-man football this season because if we didn’t meet the threshold for 11-man, they could have just elected to not let us field a team at all,” said Loyd, who also teaches history and computer apps classes at Baumholder. “The style of play this year is going to be very engaging as we try to keep players off the quarterback then also turn to catch passes. Players who’ve never caught balls or run with it will get the chance this year. Everyone will be learning routes and getting familiar with the various, slight rules changes.” The largest player on the BHS roster is a transfer student, Quentin Murphy, who moved from the States this summer and has played the game at a high level before. Murphy is a senior and there is a nucleus of talent that gets its first test against Brussels in two weeks. Jeremiah Christopher was a second-team all-conference player last season and heads into his senior year with promise. Freshman Larry D. Wesley III has stepped up with positive workouts this summer, too. Sam Bankston impressed coaches this summer with a lot of individual integrity as he worked to get in shape and hone his game. He is a sophomore, as is receiver Jacob Gregg, and Loyd plus his staff of four assistants have been preaching accountability to the small roster of players. “All of them have to step up if we expect to be successful,” Loyd said. “We’ve got a season and we’ve got a shot at a championship, so the same goals are there for us that would have been there if we were playing 11-man football. Once the games start, a lot of it will not have really changed.”

Page 13

Players who will provide leadership with the 2018 Ramstein grid team include (from left) Nick Scherzer, Jacob Steinbeck, Naser Eaves, and Bailey Holland.

Carter Hollenbeck begins his third season as Ramstein head coach after guiding the Royals to the Division I title game in both 2016 and 2017.

Kaiserslautern seniors Corey Coombs and Solo Turgeon will be counted on for a lot in the Raiders’ scheme this season.

Duke Allen enters his first season as head coach at Kaiserslautern after previously teaching and coaching at Sigonella, Italy, and Osan, Korea.

Baumholder has fewer numbers this season but still a lot of potential.

Kaiserslautern’s annual Barbarossa fest, “Swinging Lautern,” started Thursday and will continue today and Saturday in the center of town. The local sales promotion agency called “Kaiser in Lautern,” in cooperation with the city of Kaiserslautern, is sponsoring this fest with an international musical program featuring swing, blues, boogie, jazz, soul and salsa. Numerous singers, music groups and marching bands perform in the streets downtown and on stages put up at Altenhof, Schillerplatz and Stiftsplatz. “For years now, ‘Swinging Lautern’ can be found in our city’s event calendar,” said Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor KAISERSLAUTERN

Dr. Klaus Weichel. “Our sales promoting agency and city event office organized a diversified musical program with many performers who can be seen live on stage.” Today, musical performances will begin at noon. Zech’s Washboard company will present jazz on the stage at Stiftsplatz at 3 p.m, while Die Jazzpolizei, a musical marching band, will perform in the streets from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Performances tonight include Sabrina & the Baker boys, Volker Klimmer Quintett, From Da Soul, and Havanna con Klasse. USAFE’s Wings of Dixie will perform on the stage at Schillerplatz at noon on Saturday. Other bands performing on Saturday are Jimmy Beat, The Soul Providers, The Rosevalley Sisters and more. “Besides a great musical program, stores will offer special activities, and caterers serve fine food in white pagoda tents around Stiftskirche,” said Stephan. For the first time, an Italian market will be set up daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. offering delicacies including ham, salami, olives, oil, cheese, pasta, wine and more for sale. A kiddie train will give free rides through the center. Children can participate in crafting, jump on a jump-

ing castle and get their faces painted. Fashion shows presenting this year’s fall and winter collection will take place at the stage on Altenhof, from 5 to 6 p.m. today, and between noon and 1 p.m. Saturday. “I wish all visitors a great weekend in Kaiserslautern. Have fun with your family and friends and enjoy an international music program and culinary specialties,” said Weichel. A pocket brochure listing the entertaining program is available at the Kaiserslautern Tourist Information office, Fruchthallstrasse, in stores and restaurants, or at www. kaiserslautern.de or www. werbegemeinschaft-kl.de.

Renting an apartment...with no kitchen! By The Find-It-Guide.com I remember looking for a place to live when I first arrived in Germany and coming across a bizarre occurance on more than one occasion. What was odd wasn’t that everything was in metric (it was!) and it wasn’t that all the rooms were separated off with closing doors (they were, including living rooms). It was that some of the places I saw had no kitchen! If you have ever put in some serious time in the housing market in Germany, you possibly have come across places with the kitchen missing. If you haven’t come across this yet, consider yourself lucky. That means you probably found a place to live rather quickly and were not subject to loving everything about the house/apartment...except for the fact it had no kitchen. As Americans, we would never run into this strange occurrence in the states, probably because the reason we rent a house is because we don’t own any part of an apartment. We need a place to live with all the amenities, including a sink! I have asked many of our German hosts why this is a thing. It seems many Deutschers actually like this! One friend brought up a good point when he explained it to me.

“When I moved into a flat, it was the perfect location and the price was right. Unfortunately, the landlord hadn’t updated it in about 30 years and the kitchen was the ugliest pea-green you have ever seen.” He went on to say “one of the best ways to have a nice modern place is to actually update it yourself!” I asked what you do with the kitchen when you move and the next place is a different size? “No problem. There is actually like a black market for kitchens where you can almost find every size of used kitchen you want to buy or sell.” So what else might “move with the owner” in Germany? It is often likely that the light fixtures move with an owner or renter, but that depends on what the situation is. In extreme cases, it is possible some people take floors with them! In areas around the military installations, a bit more of the American culture has rubbed off on the local population, so it is likely that these types of cases are more rare than they used to be. If you do run into this type of situation though, you may want to see it as a positive. This could be your opportunity to have the kitchen you have always wanted. And then get paid for it when you sell it to someone that needs it when you move!
