The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing hosted the senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Aug. 14 through 16 on Ramstein. U.S. Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia visited the wing to highlight the resiliency program and learn about the aeromedical evacuation assets of the wing. “(The 521st AMOW) is a unit that is doing

some really great things in regards to readiness and resiliency,” Battaglia said. “I know there are many good units out there that are doing similar things, but the 521st happened to be the ﬁrst one that I found.” The wing, he said, set itself apart from others because of the family feel of those who work in the units. “Just walk in to any one of our units, spread across six time zones on three continents, and I think you’ll see what sets us apart,” said Chief

Camaraderie comes from ‘Cardiac Hill’ cleanup Armed with brooms and bags, Soldiers from Landstuhl’s Sgt. Audie Murphy Club and local Boy Scouts cleaned up Luitpoldstrasse in Landstuhl — a steep street known locally to troops as “Cardiac Hill.” The project, which ﬁrst began in 2009, has become a biannual tradition, said Army Master Sgt. Jose Raymundo, the club president and project leader. “Through this street, we feel connected to the city and downtown,” Raymundo said. “That’s why we choose to do this.” Luitpoldstrasse links Wilson Barracks with downtown Landstuhl. American service members and civilians who work at Landstuhl Regional

Medical Center often park alongside the street and access the post through a walk-in entrance. On evenings and weekends, many Americans travel down the street to Landstuhl’s restaurants, shops and bars. During the cleanup, volunteers ﬁlled at least a dozen trash bags. Empty bottles and fast food containers were mostly what was found. In the past they’ve hauled out tires, car parts and even a computer. A small van was alongside to haul the garbage away. “Our intent is to show our appreciation to the Germans,” Raymundo said. “We share the same ideas and values as our German neighbors and we want them to know we do this because we care.” See CLEANUP, Page 3

Mordente 86th Airlift Wing commander “Yes, ma’am.” “No, sir.” The golden rule with relationships professionally and personally holds that respect is a reciprocal and twoway process. This rule can be a tool in the toolkit of every Airman — where we treat people with consideration and esteem and value their worth. What do you feel when you hear the words “ma’am” or “sir”? I can’t answer for everyone, but for me it’s an overall positive feeling. When afforded this level of respect, never once have I thought poorly of the person speaking these words. This year, Boy Scout Troop 232 from Ramstein also helped out during the twohour cleaning event. The event began at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 16. They

cleaned for roughly two hours. Afterward, the volunteers went to lunch at a kebab shop on Landstuhl’s Kaiserstrasse. Raymundo hopes their efforts set an example for Soldiers in Landstuhl and the entire KMC. “It’s a way for us to appreciate the hospitality from the city of Landstuhl,” Raymundo said. “We do this to reinforce the camaraderie between Germans and Americans.”

Come out and enjoy a friendly, yet competitive, golf tournament at the Army vs. Air Force Challenge at 9 a.m. Sept. 7. This is an annual challenge between U.S. Army and Air Force personnel. Risk reduction for sexual assault: What you should know to protect yourself by Dr. Thomas Appel-Schumacher U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program manager There is a lot to be said about how blaming a victim of sexual assault is devastating to a victim. When a traumatic crime like sexual assault occurs, many questions are asked of the victim’s history and behaviors, which communicate loud and clear he or she did something terribly wrong to provoke the attack. Questions like: “Were you drinking?” “Were you alone?” “What were you wearing?” “What did you say to the alleged assailant earlier in the night?” “Why were you at that location?” “Why did you hang out with those people?” These questions may inadvertently reinforce the idea the victim is to blame for the assault. However, no matter the circumstances, if you are a victim of sexual assault, you should never be blamed for a sexual assault committed against you. Sexual assault is a crime. There is no way for anyone to be completely safe from being assaulted in a lifetime because these crimes are about someone taking control away from the victim. But, there are ways each of us can lower the chances of being targeted. Following these measures is simply about self-protection. There is a lot to be said for the importance of self-protection. The other term used to describe selfprotecting behaviors to prevent a sexual assault is “risk reduction.” In other words, we should ask, “What can a person do to protect him or herself and reduce the risk of being sexually assaulted?” Risk reduction in this context equates to self protection. Let’s look at some ways you can reduce the risk of you or someone you know becoming a victim. 1. Alcohol can be a huge factor in sexual predators achieving their goal of sexually assaulting someone. For

self-protection purposes, you should be aware of your own limits and be aware of how alcohol can affect your thinking, reasoning and behavior. If a predator notices you are less inhibited, the predator may try to target you as opposed to someone else. Be careful when conversing with brand new acquaintances, and also be wary of acquaintances giving you more attention than you want. If you realize you have reached a certain level of inebriation that affects your ability to think clearly, take a break from alcohol and switch to water for a little while. This is especially important if you find yourself alone.

is OK, and even showing an interest in continuing some kind of interaction in the future is OK. To reduce the risk of being misunderstood, you need to remain cognizant of the conversations, the responses from the other person, and what they say in response to you. If you don’t desire sexual activity, you should voice that by responding with something like, “I’m going home with my friends soon, but if you’d like to get together later this week, I’m free.” This clarity can help reduce risk, because the fact that you are leaving with other people may make it more difficult for them to target you.

2. The “wingman” concept isn’t just something for flyers to use. It is widely known that perpetrators try to get their victims alone, away from the crowd. So, to protect yourself, you should try to stay with a group or not go alone for any purpose, even for a short period of time. Before you go out, have a plan for who is driving and how long you want to stay out. If you arrive at a club or a social event with a friend(s) and they want to leave early or end up abandoning you for whatever reason, you might want to consider going home. Being alone raises one’s risk of being targeted.

5. Locations and the company with whom you choose to surround yourself are important facets of risk reduction. You should always have an idea of where you are going, know where you are and be aware of your surroundings. Some places have reputations for certain activities, which may not be entirely safe. In the same way, having some idea of who may be at the same party location is important. Many places have reputations, so know about those before you arrive. Oftentimes, those reputations are determined by the people who frequent those places. Again, a measure of self-protection can be accomplished by using simple awareness and making wise decisions about where to be and knowing who might be there.

3. One inappropriate question victims are often asked after the attack is, “What were you wearing?” This implies their choice of outfit provoked and caused a sexually-charged attack. This thinking is wrong, and you should not feel at fault if you are targeted, no matter what you are wearing. However, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and to be watchful of people excessively giving you attention, because they may not have your best intentions in mind when they claim to be admiring you. 4. When you have conversations with people, pay attention to where the conversation is leading. Flirting is OK, talking about personal things

6. With regards to everyday surroundings, going out at night isn’t the only time you have to be aware of what’s around you. Many people are attacked in broad daylight, so you should stay vigilant at all hours of the day. Be mindful when you are walking or exercising outside (i.e., where you are going, who is around and what types of neighborhoods you frequent). If you wear headphones, take time to look behind and around you every once in a while to notice if someone is following or watching you. If you are on a sidewalk and you see a large

vehicle with no windows parked next to you on the road, you could cross the street to reduce the chances of someone quietly pulling you into their vehicle. The same precautions exist in parking lots. Lock your doors as soon as you enter your vehicle, whether it is morning, noon or night. While these simple measures might seem excessive to you, remember that a little can go a long way. Again, these measures are meant to help protect you and to make it difficult for perpetrators to victimize you. Risk reduction behavior is something to help protect you from sexual predators. It is not an entire solution to prevent all chances of being sexually assaulted. The only one who is responsible for a sexual assault is the person who sexually assaults. People do not ask to be sexually assaulted. But remember that even though you may not have predatory thoughts in your mind as you get dressed, decide where to go, who to be with, how much to drink and who to talk to, there are predators out there who are waiting for the right opportunity to take advantage of you. That is why you have to take precautions to protect yourself. There are people out there who don’t care about you and are just seeking to fulfill their own depraved desires. So, the more difficult you make it for them to target you, the better your chances are of not being victimized. Keep in mind that these measures of risk reduction are not 100 percent solutions to the issue of sexual assault. If someone truly wishes to target and attack you, they are going to. So, for your own safety and protection, make it more difficult for them. The victim of a sexual assault is never to blame for that heinous act being forced on them. But in your everyday life, it is vital to remember not everyone has your best intentions in mind. So, to lower those risks, do what you need to do to protect yourself.

AOC Airmen visit historical bunker Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 603rd Air and Space Operations Center took a look at history after visiting the Air Defense Operations Center bunker Aug. 16 in Kindsbach. The bunker was built prior to World War II and was utilized for command and control operations for the German army. After the war it was passed to the French, who used it primarily for storing munitions. The Air Force gained control of the bunker in 1954 and turned the bunker back into a command and control center where air operations could have been led if the Cold War turned hot. When the U.S. vacated the bunker in 1993, it was given back to the German government. The Kindsbach Cave Bunker now belongs to the family who owns the land, and they provide tours of the bunker. During the tour, Airmen saw the conditions in which their previous generation worked. Highlights of the tour included the old air defense operations center and the Cold War-era AOC. “If you’re the owner of something with historical value, you have an obligation to show it to anyone who is interested,” said Wolfgang Wuermel, owner of the Kindsbach Cave. “This was an interesting tour to give, especially since the people on this tour do the same job as those who served here long ago.” For one member of the 603rd AOC, the tour meant seeing the area where

his father worked in the late ’70s. “My father worked here and specialized in communications; we actually have the same job,” said Tech. Sgt. Peter Krueger, 603rd AOC NCO in charge of operational knowledge management. “I figured since I work here now, I would organize a tour to compare where we work now to where we would have worked years ago.”

The newest AOC in the Air Force has multiple differences from what was identified as the first ADOC, Krueger said. “You could tell the differences every sixth room we passed,” he said. “It seemed like every few rooms was broken up by mechanical room. Now our technology is much (more compact).” As the organizer, Krueger was

pleased at the interest members of his organization had about descending into the past. “We had a positive turnout. There were lots of interested people who wanted to learn about the history of our field,” Krueger said. “It’s a link directly from how we operate now to how air defense operations were handled back then. We have come a far way from how we used to operate.”

Officials strive to protect MWR programs amid budget cuts by Donna Miles American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Committed to preserving quality-of-life offerings despite ever-tighter budgets, military morale, welfare and recreation officials are scaling back in some areas as they introduce innovative approaches to delivering services and programs. Military fitness centers, swimming pools, lodging facilities and outdoor recreation offices might sound to some like a footnote among competing budget requirements. But Ed Miles, DOD’s MWR policy director, and his counterparts across the military services see a close connection to military readiness. “We have a direct impact on the readiness and retention and resilience of the troops and their families,” Miles told American Forces Press Service. “When you have a healthy and fit force, it has absolute national security implications — in terms of stress reduction, physical and emotional health and esprit de corps.

Congress has long agreed, authorizing funds since 1989 to cover 85 percent of programs with the most direct link to readiness: fitness centers, community centers and library programs, among them, Miles explained. Amenities such as arts-and-crafts centers, outdoor recreation centers and youth programs that are less directly tied to readiness receive a lower authorization of 65 percent. Meanwhile, “nice-to-have” offerings such as military golf courses, bowling alleys, campgrounds, food and beverage services and similar services generally must be self-supporting, with user fees covering all costs and overheads. A variety of factors has thrown this formula off kilter, Miles said. With increased privatization, almost three-quarters of military families now live off installations and tap services and programs in their communities. Many, like their civilian neighbors, have fewer spare dollars to spend on recreation. And with sequestration putting a big dent in already-reduced MWR budgets, the military servic-

es find themselves struggling to provide quality-oflife programs and services to their members. It all converges after 11 years of war — at a time when safe, affordable options for military members and their families to blow off steam are more important than ever, said Bob Vogt, the Army’s division chief for soldier and community recreation. “If we didn’t have the programs offered on an installation for a soldier or his family, they would have to go find a release somewhere else,” he said. “We have a safe, controlled environment on our installations, and we can offer a reduced fee for a lot of programs to help them release some of that pent-up stress and frustration. “So our goal is to try not to reduce or eliminate any services and to try to maintain the current level of services,” Vogt continued. In some cases, that has required the Army to borrow from nonappropriated-fund activities to keep fitness centers and other appropriated activities running. eaders from the 1st CBCS invited retired Chief Master Sgt. Gerald Richards, a 1st CBCS alumnus, to inspire their Airmen and answer questions on the differences between the units early ’60s mission and current operations. After a year’s worth of working around schedules and trying to pick the perfect opportunity for this meet and greet, both parties finally came together. “When I took that I.O.U last year, it never occurred to me that I would find myself actually here visiting the 1st CBCS on Ramstein,” Richards said. The visit allowed Richards to see the newer, innovative way the squadron conducts missions and how the career field has expanded. “It’s like being back home,” Richards said. “It’s a great honor and privilege for me to meet my old alma mater and witness their advancements.” Richards enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on May 17, 1960, and after his completion of air traffic control technical school at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., he went on to

have a long 25-year career. After Richards retired, he joined Martin Marietta Corporation and supported modernization efforts to the National Airspace System Plan in 1985. Two years later, he joined the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to Richards and Airmen from the 1st CBCS, the visit benefited them both. “This was an opportunity for squadron members to learn about where they came from,” said Master Sgt. Dana Leonard, 1st CBCS plans and

support director. “Learning about the history of our unit and why it means so much when carrying and executing the 1st CBCS mission of deploy, operate and defend tactical communications and airfield systems is an honor.”

Know your limits Many of us have experienced heartache, pain, joy and sadness — an array of emotions. Some of us are still tormented by decisions we made or the pressures life offers. We all have our limits and our breaking points. It is how we recognize these and what we do about them that are key to overcoming these obstacles. I have had my breaking points and my limits pushed as well. I have seen mental health a few times over the course of my career. The first time was in 1995. But, I did not seek their counsel again until 2010 while at Ramstein. I just arrived on base, a first sergeant, and I was going through my second divorce. I knew my limits and needed someone to talk to, so I sought guidance through mental health. Mental health can sometimes carry a stigma; I didn’t worry about that when I was a young Airman walking in. But as a first sergeant walking in for help, it was scary. I almost walked out. I am glad I didn’t. It was one of the best decisions I have made. I went for a few months and then the last time I went was when we lost an Airman in the Frankfurt shooting March 2, 2011. I had reached my limits and I knew I needed help. It made me realize, we all need a person to talk to whether it is family, friends or a professional. I firmly believe the obstacles I had in my life have helped me become a better mother, sister, friend and leader. Let your experiences define your character, but not you. German soldier recognized for heroic effort Story and photos Rick Scavetta U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern A broad smile lit up Liridon Lukaj’s face as Spc. Heather Colton walked up to him at Pulaski Park with her son, Riley. Fifteen months earlier, Lukaj, a soldier in the German army, rescued them from a severe car wreck — a frightening memory that evaporated as Riley ran off to play with Lukaj’s own daughters. For Lukaj and Colton, the reunion on a sunny day in the park helped both find closure on a traumatic experience. It was chilly and still dark the morning of April 23, 2012, as Colton drove her 1989 Audi onto the autobahn for her early morning commute to Miesau – where Riley goes to day care while she works in the installation coordinator’s office. Colton, an Army shower and laundry specialist who served a 15-month tour in Iraq, had just returned from her home in Alaska. “That morning, I got in my car, got my son all strapped in and headed onto the A6,” Colton said. “My check engine light came on. I was in the center lane and I lost all power.” She coasted to the side, but there was no breakdown lane. She telephoned for help. She remembers hearing a military police officer say to stay in her car. She never saw the oncoming truck. Lukaj’s morning also began routine. He picked up a fellow soldier, Talat Abdullah, then stopped for gas and a coffee before driving his BMW onto the autobahn. Abdullah dozed beside him. In his rearview mirror, Lukaj watched a fast-moving truck

swerve, so he let it pass. Then, he saw a stalled Audi up ahead. One truck smashed into the car and then another. “Oh my God, what’s happened?” Lukaj said, turning to Abdullah. “There’s an accident. We must help.” He slammed on his brakes, leapt out and waved down speeding autobahn traffic. Rushing adrenaline replaced his fear as early morning commuters screeched to a halt. Lukaj, a Kosovo native who moved to Kaiserslautern as a child, said he prayed for strength as he ran to the crushed hulk of the car. Inside, he saw a young woman in a gray American uniform. The air was thick with the smell of leaking gasoline. Fearing an explosion, Lukaj yanked at the crumpled door, tugging and thrashing. At one point, his hand got caught in the metal wreckage. Tugging it out, his hand throbbed in pain, but he kept pulling, he said. Colton was in shock. She awoke when Lukaj pinched her ear lobes. Lukaj and Abdullah lifted her away from the accident. “I realized I was being pulled out by two Germans and I asked where my kid was,” Colton said. “They were like, ‘We don’t see a child.’” Lukaj closely examined the wreck. Then, he saw a baby boy. He saw blood. He thought the worst. Tears filled his eyes, he said. Lukaj, a father of three, said he prayed the child was all right. Calling to Abdullah for help, they freed Riley from the backseat. Soon, German medics arrived and brought Colton and her son to a local

hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. I’m very grateful that I was pulled out of the car and that me and my son walked out with only scratches and bruises,” Colton said. “Everyone who’s seen the pictures said, ‘You shouldn’t have walked out of there alive.’” Colton got a loan through Army Emergency Relief and bought a 2001 Honda Accent. It took her a while to drive on the autobahn again. She found herself avoiding trucks for some time. Riley had trouble sleeping. For Colton, 25, life has mostly returned to normal, she said. Lukaj, however, cannot forget that morning. His injured hand prevents him from continuing to serve in the German army, and he’s awakened by nightmares from the accident, he said. Recognition for his efforts cheered him up, though.

In July, the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz awarded Lukaj and Abdullah with the state’s rescue medal, presented to those first responders whose efforts saved a life. U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern recognized Lukaj during an Aug. 15 event at Pulaski Barracks. Col. Bryan DeCoster, commander of U.S. Army Baden-Württemberg, thanked Lukaj at a brief ceremony. Then, Lukaj, his wife, Tina, and their daughters, Erza, Leona and Alea, joined garrison staff for a barbecue. Col. Myron McDaniels and Command Sgt. Maj. Dwight Wafford, the 212th CSH command team, and Master Sgt. Edgar Matthews, Colton’s supervisor, also attended. Before leaving the barbecue, Colton thanked Lukaj and gave him a hug. “I’m happy that my son and I are alive,” Colton said. “I’m just very grateful.”

One of the most popular classes offered is called, “The Five Love Languages.” Every person in our life expresses love in different and unique ways. Often, the way we show love and need love is not the way our partner, friends or family feels comfortable showing it. It often feels like we speak different languages and have a hard time getting others to show love to us in the way we need. “The Five Love Languages” is a book and curriculum developed by Gary Chapman. This approach describes four primary love languages or styles individuals use to show love in their relationships. These languages are used with our spouse, intimate partner, children, parents and co-workers. Once we know our own love language, we can accept that others are not going to always be like us. We have to compromise and develop an understanding that we are all speaking different love languages, and the key is to tailor our language to those around us so they will feel love. We also have to know their love language so we can begin to appreciate the things they do for us to show love —

often the very things we miss or ignore. I will share a funny example about my spouse. He grew up on a farm and his family did not really talk or hug. They worked hard, did chores daily and were practical in the way they showed love. My family on the other hand was loud, talkative and very affectionate. I remember the first time my husband came to meet my parents. My brother began to initiate a hug and he froze up and just kind of stood there in shock. I remember not understanding why he did not have a need to talk and discuss everything about his day with me. I would get home from work and he would have the dishes done, laundry going and dinner cooking on the stove. I liked that, but often ignored this and wondered why he did not say welcome home and give me a hug. I realized after reading “The Five Love Languages” book that we were totally different love languages. I was “Words of Affirmation and Physical Touch” and he was “Acts of Service.” He showed love by performing tasks and by doing practical things to make life easier for me, whereas I wanted to hug him and communicate about our day. We had to learn to compromise and change our style and adapt to each other. Once we did that, we appreciated each other’s differences a lot more. There will be a class about “The Five Love Languages” from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Ramstein Health and Wellness Center. The class is open to the entire community. DOD facilities gear up to issue ID cards to same-sex spouses by Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Department of Defense facilities are gearing up to issue identification cards to same-sex spouses beginning Sept. 3, Pentagon officials said Wednesday. “All spousal and family benefits, including ID cards, will be made available no later than Sept. 3, 2013,” said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen. The Supreme Court decision to overturn portions of the Defense of Marriage Act made it possible for the

department to recognize samesex marriages. “The department will make the same benefits available to all military spouses, regardless of sexual orientation, as long as service member-sponsors provide a valid marriage certificate from a jurisdiction — including those overseas — that recognizes same-sex marriage,” Christensen said. Entitlements such as basic allowance for housing and family separation allowance are retroactive to the date of the Supreme Court’s decision — June 26. For service members married after that date, the entitlements will be paid

from the date of the marriage. Many U.S. service members live in jurisdictions that do not recognize same-sex marriages. As operational requirements permit, commanders may allow military personnel in same-sex relationships up to 10 days of non-chargeable leave for the purpose of traveling to a jurisdiction that allows same-sex couples to be married if they are stationed more than 100 miles from one of those areas. Art meets craftsmanship

in St. Wendel by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The City of St. Wendel will host an arts market from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The historical streets of the old part of town will turn into a workshop for arts and craftsmanship. More than 85 artisans from all over Europe will present their works at the market with the name “Sankt Wendeler LebensArt.” “When you are looking for something very special and unique, you are in the right spot,” said Leonie Paqué from the St. Wendel city marketing

office. “The arts market is a treasure trove for excellent arts and crafts.” Visitors can watch how the artisans work and they will explain how they created some of their items. They will also create fashion or furniture on special request. Arts and crafts items are made with different techniques. Visitors will find a variety of ceramics as well as sculptures and objects made of wood, glass, leather, cloth, paper, stone and metal. There will be clothes, hats, purses, jewelry and housing accessories, as well as sound objects

and wind chimes of special designs. “We are glad that this market is known across state borders,” said Klaus Bouillon, mayor of St. Wendel. “Focusing on arts in its diversity, the market offers to get to know works of engaged artisans outside galleries and museums.” Each afternoon, walking acts will provide some entertainment. Matzenbach lures ‘Vikings’ to medieval market

For the fourth time, the community of Glan-Münchweiler will sponsor a medieval market Saturday and Sunday in Matzenbach. This year’s market will put the emphasis on the visit of the Vikings. “Finally, the Vikings, on their many trips all over Europe, discovered our village on the map,” said Steffen Schultheiss from the Glan-Münchweiler union community. “They are coming in their rowing boat on the Glan River and show us how they live.” The event will also feature a knights’ camp, vendors, craftsmen and artists. Knights will demonstrate show fights on horses and artists will present fire shows. Craftsmen such as blacksmiths, wood carvers, bow makers and pearl makers will demonstrate their skills.

Vendors will sell clothes and other useful items. Jugglers and musicians will entertain the audience throughout the days. Visitors will find neat taverns, where medieval food specialties will be served. The castle kitchen will prepare baked goods, meat dishes and sweet items. The traditional mead and beer from Middle Ages will be available to taste. “We as a community don’t want to put the emphasis on a commercial interest, but we want to make our region known to tourists,” Schultheiss said. “That’s why we intend to offer a high-quality program at familyfriendly prices.” Entrance fee is €3; visitors in traditional costumes and children are admitted free. The event location can be found on Eisenacher Strasse 16 in 66909 Matzenbach. From the Matzenbach train station it only takes a minute to walk to the market area.

Mining day in Imsbach The Mining World of Imsbach offers its 11th Palatinate Mining Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. hanges are coming for those members who fail their official physical fitness test beginning Sept. 1. Air Force Medical Operations has reviewed the current Balanced Eating, Workout Effectively, Live Long program and adjusted the course to make it more focused and relevant. Currently, members who score an “unsatisfactory” on their PFT are required per Air Force Instruction 36-2905 to attend a three-hour BE WELL course, which focuses on nutrition, exercise and behavior modification. After a review of this process, it was noted that mandatory attendance was less effective in driving lifestyle changes. Members attending these classes had a wide variety of needs. For example, someone could have scored an 88 on their PFT and failed the push-up portion, so their needs should be mainly focused on strength training. Alternatively, someone else who scores a 56.4 on the run, 10 points on push-ups, and 10 points on sit-ups, but had a 42-inch waist would require a more nutrition based approach. When the changes are implemented, members and their commander will have to choose an option that will improve their fitness and nutritional needs. Option 1: Complete the virtual BE WELL course online via Advanced Distributed Learning Service. This option is ideal for geographically-separated units or for those members with a high operations tempo who cannot leave the work station but still need assistance. Option 2: Enroll in the Healthy Weight Program at the health and wellness center. This option is for those members struggling to meet the abdominal circumference, body mass index or percent body fat required to pass the PFT. Option 3: Attend Strength Training Intervention. This class will focus on strength training designed to increase a member’s ability to improve the push-up and sit-up portions of the PFT. Option 4: Attend the Cardiovascular Intervention Program. This class will focus on running mechanics, breathing, tempo training, Fartlek training, and assist those members struggling with the 1.5 mile run or 1 mile walk. Option 5: Utilize the military OneSource personal health coach. This is ideal for geographically-separated units or members who would like the one-on-one attention. Members will have access to several online modules (including post-pregnancy) and weekly telephone access with a health coach for one full year. Commanders can direct members to attend one or more interventions, depending on the perceived needs of the member. “This is an excellent use of resources for commanders and adds variety for military members,” said Lt. Col. Peggy Ann Milam, 86th AMDS HAWC flight commander. Members who are currently injured can schedule an appointment with the exercise physiologist for a detailed exercise prescription or to conduct a functional movement screening. The HAWC also provides a deep water running class from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Ramstein Aquatics Center for members on profile.
