COMMENTARY: 21st century leadership: Innovation, embracing change by Lt. Col. Ken Sterling 86th Mission Support Group Over the past year and a half the world has faced a global pandemic, stock market collapse followed by its meteoric rise, global political changes, and rampant social unrest. During this timeframe and despite the global upheavals, the U.S. military’s core missions did not change. The war against terror has continued, great power competition is ongoing, and grey zone challenges continue to increase. Amidst this backdrop, the role of a commander, or a senior leader, has remained steady. They must fulfill the mission, build their people, and be prepared for the next fight. Less than 10 years ago these tasks would have been impossible in a world defined by a global pandemic. How could you complete the mission when up to 50 percent or more of the work force is teleworking? How do you continue professional education, mentorship, and leader development with only half of your people? Finally, how do I prepare for the future fight when we couldn’t even administer a physical training test? The answer to these questions is two-fold: innovate and embrace change. This new reality created the perfect opportunity for leaders to identify their innovators and demonstrate their ability to not only tolerate change, but to thrive in a culture of embracing change. Understanding what embracing innovation looks like requires a few examples. Fortunately, the corporate world has gone to great lengths to embrace this concept, as it often provides key competitive advantages for companies who inculcate innovation at every level. For the past 15 years the Boston Consulting Group has conducted and published a global innovation survey of business executives. While the individual companies identified as the most innovative have changed over the years, the underlying strategies which supported innovation were remarkably stable and consisted of five interrelated factors. The factors were remarkably simple, though often challenging

Graphic by Staff Sgt. Emmeline James

in execution. The first factor is a clearly established understanding of why behind innovation and its purpose within a given organization. The second factor is a clearly defined sector, market, or niche where energy is spent innovating. These two factors lead naturally into the third and fourth factors, which focus on knowing what actions to reward and empowering teams to move forward with innovation, by giving them the authority and support to manage projects programs from start to finish. The last factor is the measure of how well the first four factors have been implemented. Is innovation a retention magnet for our talent? The 86th Airlift Wing innovates because doing so maintains our ability to accomplish the mission despite a deficit of time, money, and personnel.

Within each squadron the specifics of what “the mission” is differ, but the resource constraints remain largely the same and there’s simply never enough time, money, or personnel to get the mission done, especially if we continue to use the models designed 10, 15, or 30 years ago. As adaptive Airmen, we can innovate almost everywhere, but is that the best use of critical resources? Identifying where and how to innovate requires strategic thought, a solid plan, good communication, and Airmen willing to roll up their sleeves. Harnessing the creativity and energy of our young Airmen is where leaders find efficiencies and accomplish the mission. Enabling innovation is only the first step in capitalizing on the talents of our people. The next steps are enabling and recognizing their

efforts. Fortunately some foundational beliefs help make these steps a bit easier. As an organization we place a premium on excellence in all we do, and a core belief of airpower, is centralized control and de-centralized execution. In other words, we reward Airmen taking smart risks, empower them with the means to succeed, and offer them the freedom of action necessary to execute their concepts. Finally, we must recognize that these efforts help the longterm talent management goals of the Air Force. Every Airman who takes off the uniform early must be replaced at a significant cost in terms of time, diminished mission readiness, and available resources. Creating, promoting, and sustaining an innovative organization will result in higher retention and enhanced mission readiness.

The willingness to embrace change is just as important as innovating. Traditionally, the U.S. military has been relatively conservative with regards to change. The U.S. Army did not want to give up its horses for vehicles (the last cavalry charge on horseback took place in 1942), the tank in its relatively modern form was introduced in World War I but not widely adopted until World War II, the battleship was proven vulnerable and ineffective by General Billy Mitchell in 1923 but were still considered the primary striking force of the Pacific Fleet on December 7, 1941, and the Army Air Corps arguments in favor of strategic bombardment took decades to produce meaningful changes. Fortunately, the current climate concerning change is evolving and a greater willingness to embrace change is emerging. In the past years, we’ve witnessed the establishment of Space Force, the introduction of multi-capable Airmen, and the development of the AOC-centric MultiDomain Warfare Officer career path. All these developments point towards a greater willingness to move away from the military’s history of avoiding change and a “sticking to what’s worked in the past” mindset. Over the past 18 months, we’ve found ways to get the mission done with many of our Airmen working from home. The Department of Defense has embraced telework and developed collaboration tools, information sharing systems, and virtual offices. The work is getting done while offering service members the ability to take care of their families and find a new normal. As a military we’ve leveraged technology to find new touch points, embraced new ways of doing business, and managed to continue both personal and professional development. These adaptations didn’t start at the Pentagon and work their way down. They started in the halls of our squadrons and worked their way up. Fortunately, embracing change leads to innovation and a culture of innovation leads to a willingness to embrace change. It’s imperative we capitalize on these trends now and seek to sustain them as we move forward into a post-pandemic future.

Veterinary Practices Delorme Goldberg Landstuhl & Kaiserslautern Founded in 1998, the Veterinary Practices Delorme Goldberg have since been supporting customers and their animal friends with advice and assistance. They welcome all kinds of pets and animals, other than farm animals. Even exotic animals like parrots, terrarium animals, and small rodents, will be taken care of here. It all started with a small practice in Landstuhl which they then re-built and opened in a new, larger location in Landstuhl in 2003. There they were able to include an animal station and expand their scope of services. In 2018 they then added their second practice in Kaiserslautern. Both practices are ideally located with ample parking and are able to meet your individual needs thanks to their extensive and modern equipment. In addition to digital x-rays, they have ultrasound equipment and computer tomography which no other vet offers in the KMC. They use modern methods of diagnostics as well, which all opens a wide range of possibilities to identify and treat your animal’s complaints and thus ensure its well-being or speedy recovery. At the Landstuhl location they also offer on-call duty and take turns with other vets in the area. With valid reason you can also request a house call. Other services include grooming and physio therapy. At the main practice in Landstuhl they can also offer osteosynthesis and bone surgery. Here is where the animal station / daycare plays a big role for those needing medical attention. If your pet is too young and can’t stay alone due to taking meds, or there isn’t an accommodation appropriate to the species elsewhere, or if physical illnesses is involved, then you might be able to take advantage of the extra clinic station for a several day stay. This is also ideal for treat-

ments or surgeries that take several hours and require recovery time under observation, so you can leave your pet with them and don’t have to stay and wait. The professional staff of four doctors and 22 employees take pride in taking care of your pets. They are a very international team and cover various languages, like Romanian, Spanish, Polish, Norwegian, French, German and English. Not only are your animals’ well-being their top priority, but they want you to feel comfortable there too. So rest assured, you are in good hands and will receive updates and explanations of check-ups and treatments so you fully understand what’s going on with your animal. To top it all off, the Veterinary Practices Delorme Goldberg have their own laboratories with the latest technology. This allows them to quickly evaluate and subsequently treat the patient without having to send anything off and waste valuable time. This way they continue to stay personally involved in all aspects of your animal’s treatment. Since February the practice belongs to the IVC EVIDENSIA which is Europe’s leading animal medicine group, allowing them to have a large network of experts to collaborate with. The Veterinary Practices Delorme Goldberg have their own in-house pharmacy at both locations. You are now able to get meds they prescribe for your animal on the spot. If you’re looking for a place that offers professional and reliable services where you and your pet are well taken care of, then it’s time for you to call the Veterinary Practices Delorme Goldberg and see for yourself. They accept all credit cards, even Amex, and you can use a VAT form, too.

What is an RAO? Courtesy story

The Ramstein Air Base Retiree Activities Office has been closed for many months as the COVID-19 pandemic impacted various base agencies, but the RAO is pleased to open its doors once again in a new location. The RAO serves the community in a variety of ways. It keeps the immediate retiree populace of approximately 2,000 Air Force local retirees and surviving spouses up-to-date on benefits, entitlements, and all issues affecting the well-being of the retirees and their spouses. Leveraging its platform and connections, the RAO answers questions via phone and email in an effort to answer complaints and prevent misinformation from spreading.

The RAO takes all questions affecting members from the community, researches the subject, coordinates with any lead agency and provides responses. United States Air Force retired senior master sergeant Mike Goff is the RAO’s newly appointed group leader. Goff expressed his excitement over seeing the RAO begin serving the community again. “Before the pandemic hit, the RAO held various workshops and events for retirees, ensuring they and their spouses were well plugged into resources available in the Kaiserslautern Military Community,” Goff said. One of those workshops was set up to provide the retiree, especially the spouse, with vital information on what documentation to have ready when the retiree

Additionally, the new Director is looking for more experienced volunteers to expand operating hours. “This is one of my goals, and I will work hard to locate a few dedicated volunteers to make this happen,” Goff said. “Of the some 100 RAO’s around the world, we want to be the best”. Approximately 56,000 Americans reside in the KMC. RAO leadership prides themselves on being ambassadors to the community and fostering strong ties between both Americans and Germans in the area. USAF retired Chief master sergeant Jim Barrante, who has

been with the RAO for 10 years, stresses that having a functioning RAO available to all retirees, spouses and surviving spouses is an absolute necessity for the retiree community. “Especially here and around

The RAO provides answers on various topics including applying for Social Security, tips on how to ready yourself for German residency, complexities of doing estate planning, and preparation for that “final flight.” “Based on many instances where we have helped people time after time, the RAO has been and will continue to be a ‘life saver’ for those that have been served here and for those that will follow us.” Goff and Barrante are passionate about caring for military senior citizens and are committed to keeping the RAO up and running. The dedicated volunteers of the RAO strive to be sincere American ambassadors to their German neighbors, and they are working to mirror a positive reflection of the retiree community they serve. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Audrey Allen, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron aeromedical evacuation technician and flight instructor, grew up enjoying many outdoor activities like traveling, skiing, camping and hiking. Every year, Allen’s family went to a campground and stayed all summer long after school was let out. When Allen grew up and became a member of the Air Force because her father is an Army veteran, she was stationed at Ramstein Air Base. Allen is grateful for being stationed in Europe

because it gives her many opportunities to continue having other adventures. Recently, she took an opportunity to travel to Iceland and run a half marathon with a group called Albatros Adventure. “Their main goal for marathons isn’t to have your best time, it’s for you to have fun,” she said. “This one we ran on a volcano and it was so cool.” Runners could choose to run a full, half or quarter marathon. The route went through the Hverfjall crater, smaller volcanic craters and lava rock plains. Allen’s favorite adventure in her military career so far has been her temporary duty travel to Plovdiv, Bulgaria, for Thracian

Summer 2020. She provided support for 235 members from the 86th Airlift Wing. The exercise provided an opportunity to train with Bulgarian forces to enhance interoperability, maintain joint readiness and strengthen relationships with our regional allies and partners. Allen also develops training programs for the 86th AES. She acts as a Medical Control Center by creating patient scenarios for the team to solve. The training maintains readiness within the squadron to ensure the squadron can provide aeromedical support throughout the European theater. Allen was recently awarded 86th AW Airlifter of the Week. Air Force releases additional dress, appearance changes by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs New dress and appearance updates will soon be released following feedback, testing from Airmen and reviews conducted as a part of the 2020 Air Force Uniform Board. “We remain committed to maintaining an iterative approach with our dress and appearance standards,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “During this most recent review we approved several updates fully aligned with our Air Force standards and culture that maintain our focus on warfighting while providing options to meet many of the needs of our Airmen.” 2020 Air Force Uniform Board initiatives Uniform Board changes will be effective upon publication in Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Appearance of Air Force Personnel, which is expected to publish in early October. Below are examples of a few changes to the updated AFI: • Male bulk hair standards increase from 2 inches to 2.5 inches • Cosmetic tattooing on the scalp is authorized for men • The size of hair accessories increases from 1 inch to 2 inches for females • Hosiery is optional for females with any combination of the dress uniform • Transparent piercing spacers are authorized • Wing commanders may authorize the local wear of approved OCP morale patches on Fridays or during special events Furthermore, the board conducted a review of several policy items that previously mandated specific behavior based on restrictions. In some cases, the board recommended removing the restrictive language to entrust commanders and Airmen to understand and adopt proper behavior based on their situation and circumstances. “We trust our Airmen, (noncommissioned officers) and commanders with incredible resources and significant responsibilities and we’ll need to do so even more as we prepare for future conflicts,” Kelly said. “We likewise trust they can figure out what it takes and means to maintain standards without specifying exact behavior in every situation.”

The updated trousers and slacks are expected to be available in May 2022.

Examples of guidance removed in the future AFI release: • When walking in uniform, members may not use a cell phone or drink water • Members may not place hands in their pockets when walking or standing in uniform Specific details about the initiatives listed above, as well as additional changes, will be available upon AFI publication. In total, more than 30 recommendations from the Air Force Uniform Board were approved for implementation to the field. Additional Uniform Item Improvements The following uniform item improvements were made considering feedback from the field and multiple uniform fit tests. These items will be released for issue and/or purchase as the design and development process is completed. Men’s Blue Shirt and Women’s Blouse The improved men’s blue shirt and women’s blouse will utilize a new stain-resistant, wrinkle-resistant and moisture-wicking fabric with a herringbone weave in the current Air Force blue shade. The men’s shirt improvements include a tapered and lengthened shirt body with a reengineered armhole and shoulder. The women’s tuck-in style blouse and semiform-fitting blouse improvements include a lengthened shirt body, realigned buttons, a reengineered armhole, and a redesign of the neckline and collar. In addition, the updated maternity blouse will include a redesigned neckline and collar for improved fit and comfort. The back pleat of the previously-designed blouse was replaced with darts for better shape and fit. It has

realigned buttons and a lengthened shirt body for accommodation through all trimesters. The improved men’s long-sleeve blue shirt is expected to be available August 2021. The improved men’s short-sleeve blue shirt and women’s tuck-in style blouse (long and short-sleeve) are expected to be available at the end of October 2021. The improved maternity blouse is expected to be available October 2021 and the updated semi-form fitting blouse is expected to be available in January 2022. Improved Hot Weather Combat Uniform The improved hot weather combat uniform is a variant of the operational camouflage pattern uniform aimed at reducing layers of fabric in order to be lighter in weight, more breathable and quick drying, providing safer flame protection that does not melt or drip. It was designed to improve performance, survivability, lethality and safety in extreme hot and wet-weather environments. The improved hot weather combat uni-

form is expected to be available to Airmen in October 2021. Extreme Cold Weather Parka Generation III Level 7 parkas, commonly referred to as extreme cold weather parkas, are expected to be available for personal purchase through AAFES online and in select AAFES stores this winter season. Previously, the parka was not available for personal purchase and was primarily distributed as organization clothing and equipment at northern tier or extreme cold weather base locations. Men’s Blue Trousers and Women’s Blue Slacks Men’s blue trouser improvements include an adjustment to the pocket design to enhance the fit of the trousers and reduce additional alterations. The women's blue slacks improvement includes a redesigned and lower waistband, removal of the front darts to create a flat front, and a shortened rise to address fit concerns. Additionally, the pant legs will be straight cut as opposed to the previously tapered fit.

Women’s Mess Dress Slacks The new women’s mess dress slacks will provide Air Force women an option in addition to the current mess dress skirt and men’s mess dress trousers. The slacks will be a femalefit version of the male mess dress trousers with design adjustments required to fit female measurements. Slacks can be worn with the current mess dress jacket. Women’s mess dress slacks are expected to be available in August 2022. Physical Training Gear Modernized physical training gear will feature a revised fit and look with updated materials and fabric. The fabric includes soft, quick drying, antimicrobial technology that helps with moisture and odor control. The jacket, pants, and men’s and women’s t-shirts will be available along with new running and all-purpose shorts. The physical training gear is expected to be available in October 2022 with a four-year transition period for mandatory wear. Space Force Guardians will follow the updates above except where Space Force specific guidance already exists. For example, in accordance with SPFGM2020-36-01, USSF personnel are not authorized to wear morale patches. The Space Force held its inaugural uniform board in March and is currently developing comprehensive service-specific grooming and uniform policies with a targeted release late 2021.

Are you still waiting for your 2020 tax refund? Most tax returns that are filed electronically are processed and the refund is received within 21 days. If it has been more than 21 days since you e-filed and you haven’t received your refund, you can check the status online. You will need your social security number or ITIN, your filing status, and your exact refund amount. You should be able to pull all this information from a copy of the return you filed. Once you have these, go to https://www.irs.gov/refunds and click the Check My Refund Status box. After entering your information, click the Submit button and you should see the status of your tax return. The most common delay seen by the Ramstein Tax Center is for people who filed for the Recovery Rebate Credit. Over the past year there were two payments issued as a part of the government’s pandemic response that are reportable when filing your 2020 taxes. If you discovered that you were underpaid in this process or did not receive a payment you should have then the missing amounts may have been included on your return as the Recovery Rebate

The Airmen and Soldiers partnered to train on Army warrior skills like land vehicle and convoy operations, environmental survival skills and tactical communications training. The 7th CWS attaches to Army special operations teams to provide accurate weather intelligence needed to execute missions in the air and on the ground. This training helped familiarize the Airmen with warrior skills to increase their capabilities downrange.

sugar cone from the tree and took it home where they were allowed to open it. Contents of the cones usually ranged from fruits and sweets to small toys as a reward for the child to have made it through their first day of school. Nowadays, no German firstgrader goes through their first day of school without their Schultüte. The word Zuckertüte can be mostly heard in the Eastern parts of Germany. It doesn’t matter if the Schultüte is bought or self-made – it is a must-have, because the first day of elementary school has a special meaning in Germany. It has even become customary that godparents, aunts, uncles and grandparents contribute to the contents of the Schultüte. Even nowadays, contents still include sweets and small toys or even school supplies. Although the story of the Zuckertütenbaum has disappeared largely, the eye-catching shape still remains. The cones come in all colors and can be self-made or bought. However, one tradition is still the same: The Schultüte may not be opened until the first day of elementary school is over.

Every year, thousands of German kids carry a “Schultüte” to their first day of school. The cones have been a German tradition for more than 100 years. Although there are no records of its actual origins, the so-called “Schultüte” or “Zuckertüte” seems to have been introduced to school children in Eastern Europe and Germany in the 19th century. Back then, parents took the cones to the school before the first day of

first grade. The teachers then hung them up on a so-called “Zuckertütenbaum” (sugar cone tree). Children believed that the Zuckertütenbaum grew in the school’s basement. Once the sugar cones were ripe and large enough to pick, it was time for the children to go to school. This story was first introduced in a book by Moritz Heger in 1852, but other records mention the sugar cones even as early as 1801, according to a newspaper article in “Die Welt.” At the end of their first day of school, first-graders picked a

First Space Guardian for NATO Space Centre Story and photo by Allied Air Command Public Affairs Office The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Space Centre gained its first U.S. Space Force Guardian, when a key member of the team, Major Matthew Leines, officially transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the U.S. Space Force on Aug 12. During the formal ceremony held at Allied Air Command on Aug. 12, Major Leines, an engineering officer with expertise in nano-satellites and space systems, joined the U.S. Space Force. Although Major Leines was a founder member of the NATO Space Centre, his transfer to the U.S. Space Force underlines the importance of deepening cooperation between NATO and Allied space entities.

European Best Sniper Team Competition by Spc. Zachary Stahlberg 7th Army Training Command A thick fog slowly crept across the green foliage covering Hohenfels Training Area. The sounds of birds chirping rose with the sun. One would never guess that hidden in the Bavarian mountains were snipers from 14 different countries, all competing to be the best. 7th Army Training Command and the Joint Multinational Readiness Center hosted this year’s European Best Sniper Team Competition at Hohenfels Training Area, Germany, Aug. 5-14, with competitors from around the European theater. Twenty-seven sniper teams competed against each other in a grueling test of sniper skill, speed, and knowledge. Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States Army all competed to prove they were the best, Aug. 5-14. For the first time since its inception, the competition was held at Hohenfels Training Area. It was also the first U.S. Army-hosted sniper competition to allow multinational

competitor assigned to 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment. “Working together with our partners and allies is always a great way to build comradery, and I’m honored to have gotten the chance to be part of it.” The European Best Sniper Team Competition provides an arena for professional development and for NATO Allies and Partners to share tactics, techniques and procedures. Being able to cross-integrate TTP’s with exercises like the European Best Sniper Team Competition promotes interoperability to the highest degree. “It is always fun competing against Americans,” said Italian sniper Paolo Mirabella. “Events like these are a great way to learn more about each other and that will help us to work better together. Watching sniper teams handle each lane and overcome their obstacles gave him a new perspective. “The lanes were a lot of fun,” said Sgt. Gerald Bistine, a U.S. Army sniper competitor assigned to 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment. “I really enjoyed overcoming those obstacles and testing my ability to adapt to the situation I was put in.” 7th ATC modeled the competition’s lanes to each represent a specific period of time honoring events from World War I to more recent conflicts. event of the competition was inspired by Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randy Shughart, two Delta Force snipers who provided cover fire to a crew of men who were critically injured after their helicopter went down during Operation Gothic Serpent. They provided fire from their helicopter, and eventually dismounted the aircraft so that they could get closer to help the injured crew. In the end, after depleting their ammo, they were killed by Somali gunfire but are historically credited with killing 25 Somali enemies, and wounding many more. “These types of events are critical pieces of history that are important for us to remember,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jeannoel Howell, the match director for the European Best Sniper Team Competition and Observer/CoachTrainer at JMRC 2021. “Each lane has historical relevance that shows just how important a sniper’s job is.” “I am honored to have been a part of this competition,” said Sgt. Maj. Michael Sanchez, the Match President of the competition and senior O/C-T at JMRC. “These teams of professionals have displayed true grit, dedication and heart for their respective countries and each other.” From day one, each competitor showed anticipation and excitement. According to Sanchez, as soon as they arrived they were given the opportunity to zero their weapons, check their optics and make sure they were ready to go for the competition. With the details of the competition kept under close hold throughout the week, the competitors had to rely on their experience and skill as a sniper team during each event to be named this year’s winner. “The competitors were expected to use various abilities you’d expect from a sniper, such as using maps, conducting reconnaissance, firing their weapons systems, conducting physical fitness, having knowledge on various sniper tasks, and utilizing their abilities to adapt to new situations,” said Sanchez. “Their mental and emotional toughness was put to the test each day.” The Slovenian sniper team, named Lynx 01, finished first place for the European Best Sniper Team Competition 2021. “I am very impressed with the level of competition I saw this year,” said a Slovenian sniper who was part of the winning team but asked not to be named. “I was able to learn a lot from the other teams here, and I hope I can take what I learned, and it will make me a better sniper.” Team Vuruskan from Turkey took second, and team S1 from Latvia placed 3rd in this year’s competition.

Combined efforts, thousands of Soldiers: V Corps’ commitment to Europe Story and photos by Pvt. Devin Klecan Victory Corps Public Affairs Victory Corps conducted their third command post exercise at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Camp Ripley, Minnesota, Aug. 1-6, in preparation for the upcoming warfighter culminating training event in Grafenwoehr, Germany, that once successfully completed, will certify the corps headquarters’ ability to take responsibility of subordinate commands for future operations. For the exercise, V Corps Soldiers assigned to the rear command post traveled to the corps’ RCP located at Camp Ripley, Minn. to work with the Minnesota National Guard’s 34th Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Reserve’s 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) from Des Moines, Iowa, along with other special purpose enablers in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard from various locations. The 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia, also supported the exercise while the V Corps tactical and main command posts remained at Fort Knox, Kentucky, to command and control operations in a geographically dispersed environment. Approximately 2,400 Soldiers participated in the training exercise that provided an expansive exercise support construct in a computer based simulation, where large scale ground combat operations are conducted in a multi-domain environment. The newly welcomed V Corps deputy commanding general of maneuver has seen each iteration of the exercise and is excited about working with V Corps Soldiers outside of the exercise construct. “This is actually my third CPX with V Corps,” said Brig. Gen. Matthew Van Wagenen, V Corps DCG-M, who will be stationed at V Corp’s forward command post in Poznan, Poland. “I look forward to the future and being with the Soldiers that are with me and deploy forward to Poland.” The importance of conducting multiple command post exercises ensures that V Corps is fully capable to assume many of the operational and tactical-level command, control, and planning functions in the European theater of operations. The importance of every Soldier’s role in the exercise can’t be emphasized enough, from junior enlisted to commissioned officers, each Soldier pro-

vides a vital skill set that gives V Corps the ability to adapt to an ever changing environment. “A corps never fights alone. A corps is an enabling headquarters that brings in a ton of capabilities to leverage against our adversaries,” said Sgt. Maj. Michael Lamkins, the V Corps operations (G3) sergeant major. “It doesn’t matter if it is in combat or in competition, everyone involved has a serious commitment to the exercise.” The command post exercise consisted of simulated responses relating to scenarios that contribute to the declaration of NATO’s Article V. The training V Corps and assisting units received during the exercise was important for demonstrating the capacity to execute mission command and division-level offensive operations in a multinational environment, proving that the corps is committed to stand ready and support, defend, and protect all supporting NATO allies. The reactivation of V Corps in 2020 marks a new era for security in Europe and will build stronger connections and bonds with our NATO allies and partners - once certified the “Victory Corps” will once again be a stabilizing force on the European continent.

Battle Group Poland strengthens NATO alliance through celebration of Polish Armed Forces Day Story and photos by Spc. Osvaldo Fuentes Enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup Poland

WARSAW, Poland — At the invitation of the Polish government, soldiers from Battle Group Poland celebrated Polish Armed Forces Day in Warsaw, Poland, Aug. 15. On the same day as the anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, which occurred in 1920. This national holiday is traditionally held on Aug.15 to commemorate one of the most spectacular victories of the Polish Armed Forces — the Battle of Warsaw, the grand culmination of the Polish-Bolshevik War in 1920. This day is celebrated through military parades, vehicle displays, and remembrances of soldiers that gave their life for Poland. Battle Group Poland participated in the military vehicles showcase. The U.S. Army contingent brought a Mortar Carrier Vehicle “Stryker,” a vehicle equipped with a 120 millimeter mortar, and a Stryker with anti-tank capabilities. Also, the U.S. Army brought Howitzers, a field artillery weapon that resembles a cannon and shoots shells for area coverage. The Romanian Land Forces contingent of the battle group provided their Gepards, vehicles that are antiaircraft and allow for simultaneous fire on targets, ensuring air security and defense. “I am very happy to be in Poland,” said Romanian Land Forces 1st Lt. Sebastian Trindaf with Romania’s Sky Guardians. “I know that we will be able to continue to devote ourselves to keeping this great cooperation between nations.” Croatian Land Forces brought their Vulkan, a six-wheeled vehicle that has a system that fires multiple rockets in a very short span of time. Battle group soldiers got the opportunity to engage with Polish citizens face-to-face, where they answered any questions about the military vehicles and took pictures with the families that attended. “Today, the citizens get to meet the soldiers face to face and meet the people behind the equipment,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Craig Broyles,

commander of enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Poland. “It’s amazing that we get to be out here and interact with Polish citizens.” The battle group demonstrates NATO’s commitment to Poland as a forward presence, not only as a multinational defense in the event of any crisis, but to also support our host nation. “This event is everything that the battle group is about,” said Broyles. “The people are super happy to see our allies, [we] love being a part of it.” (Right) A Croatian Land Forces soldier with Storm Battery poses with a Polish family during a military vehicle showcase and meet and greet in Warsaw, Poland, Aug. 15. by Staff Sgt. Jennifer Reynolds 196th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment Zagan, Poland — The 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team “Devil Brigade,” 1st Infantry Division assumed command during a transfer of authority ceremony in Zagan, Poland, Aug. 13. The event signified the successful end of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team “Ironhorse,” 1st Cavalry Division’s nine-month rotation to Poland. After months of preparation and their own journey from Fort Riley, Kan., the 1ABCT, 1ID, is eager to assume the Regionally Aligned Forces mission. It will represent the tip of the spear and rally point from which Devil Brigade headquarters will conduct its mission in Europe. “As a Soldier, there are two units closest to my heart in the Army,” said Col. Jon Meredith, commander of 1ABCT, 1CD. “The 1st Cavalry Division is the Army Strong knockout right hook. The 1st Infantry Division is its soul, and the heart of the Big Red One is the Devil Brigade.” The transfer of authority ceremony, officiated by Brig. Gen. (Promotable) Matthew Van

Wagenen, V Corps deputy commander, was the last step of the transition between the two divisions. “We’re excited to have you here,” Van Wagenen said. “We look forward to working with you both in V Corps, but most importantly, for all the allies over here, is that we march forward over the next nine months.” The Devil Brigade has honorable campaign participation in World War I: Lorraine, Picardy, Mondidier-Noyon, St. Mihel, Aisne-Marne, and Meuse-Argonne; the Republic of Vietnam; Southwest AsiaOperation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operations Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operations Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve. “These Soldiers are fired up to live and train in Europe, alongside you, our allies and our partners,” said Col. Brian McCarthy, commander of 1ABCT, 1ID. “We’re going to master our warfighting skills and demonstrate to the world that we are lethal, ready, resilient and committed, and that Europe has no greater friend than the United States of America.” In January 2019, the Devil Brigade deployed for nine

months to Europe. They are now operational once again in Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve, a set of bilateral, joint, and multinational training exercises designed to build readiness, increase interoperability and enhance the bond between allies and partner militaries.

1 BEST BREAKS from Page 1 1. Tipi Valley - the Algarve, Portugal Think of the Algarve and most us will think of sandy beaches, the cobalt blue of the Mediterranean and endless hours of shimmering sun. The Tipi Valley is a few steps off the beaten track, and is simply breathtakingly beautiful, covered in yellows, greens and purples. Waves roar in from the Atlantic, making this the perfect place for surfers, and there are plenty of surf schools for those wishing to learn. If that sounds too energetic, head for one of the yoga retreats where you can commune with nature and de-stress in ways you’d never thought possible. 2. Naples, Italy If you desire a deathly and thrilling experience, in most vacation destinations you’d head for a theme park. In Italy, you get in car and head for the nearest city center. For a more sedate form of transport, how does exploring the countryside around Naples and the Amalfi Coast in Italy on horseback sound? Riding a trotting horse is easy once you learn you don’t have to cling on for dear life, and dozens of riding schools exist around Naples to help you learn how to ride. You will be toured along the many trails around the area and get to see the kind of scenery that’ll snatch your breath away. 3. Dalsland, Sweden How does a tour of Sweden’s Lake District sound? How does touring the lakes whilst sat upon them sound? If that floats your boat, several companies offer weeklong canoe trips around Dalsland, an area of inter-connected lakes and rivers that can be found two hours north of Gothenburg. After a quick safety and how-to lesson, you are largely left to your own devices to choose the points you wish to visit by canoe and the distance you want to travel each day. Nighttime accommodation is via a tent under a glittering canopy whilst a raging campfire crackles into the small hours.

4. Fagaras, Romania With all the travel options available to us in this busy age, such as cars, buses, trains and planes, we can forget that man survived for centuries with nothing more to use for travelling than a trusty pair of legs. Escape a week on wheels by hiking across the incredible Fagaras mountain range in the Piatra Craiului national park in Romania. You can find a guided trek for four to eight days, taking in amazing views of sloping valleys and freezing lakes carved over millennia by glaciers. Your accommodation is in traditional mountain huts and expect the odd friendly visit from a wolf, bear or onyx.

5. North Karelia, Finland If you do ever make a bucket list, then one item that simply has to be on there is the Northern Lights. Northern Finland is one place you’re guaranteed to see a nightly display of the shimmering atmospheric curtains that will dazzle you the first time you see them. The North Karelia area has a dozen or so campsites, many of them perched on the edge of one of Finland’s lakes. You can pitch your tent, dress yourself in several layers then sit outside all evening sipping hot chocolate with your neck craned to the heavens. Author’s Profile: This was written on behalf of No. 1 Traveller, a luxury air travel brand that operates airport lounges at a number of airports in the UK. Not just a comfortable place to sit, their lounges have free WiFi, complimentary snacks and drinks as well as airside luxury spas.
