President Obama visits wounded warriors at Ramstein by Staff Sgt. Sara Keller 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

ir Force One touched down March 29 at Ramstein bringing President Barack Obama, who came to meet with some of America’s heroes. After a week of traveling through Europe and stopping in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the president made a short trip to Germany to meet with wounded warriors from the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center here. “(Meeting the president) was such a surreal experience,” said Sgt. 1st Class Shederis Lakin, wounded warrior from the 840th Transportation Battalion, 595th Transportation Brigade. “It’s not every day a service member gets to meet the commander in chief. I feel honored to have gotten the opportunity.” As Airmen from the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron quickly and efficientSee VISIT, Page 3

here are a number of scholarships available for military dependents who want to attend college, and many are just an essay away. One scholarship recipient found a way to give back to the community who awarded her the chance of a lifetime. Sara Pavich, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs intern, received a scholarship from the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Association in 2010.

“In order to apply for the scholarship, I had to send in my transcripts, test scores and write a short essay,” Pavich said. “I was very excited when I found out I got the scholarship. Every little bit helps, especially with books and tuition.” Receiving a scholarship is an honor and a blessing to those who were selected. “I am very proud that she was selected. She was very worthy,” said Col. Todd Pavich, Headquarters, U.S. Air Forces in Europe global force management operations and

Wounded warriors relieve stress with K-9 compassion

COMMENTARY

by Master Sgt. Amanda Callahan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For anyone who knows me, it’s no surprise I love animals. Specifically, I love dogs, and even more specifically, I love my dogs as though they are my children. I have no intention of ever having a human child, so my three- and four-legged children are my pride and joy. I also love giving back to our community. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true. Anytime I can combine my two loves, I jump on it. At my last duty station, I volunteered as a bather at a mill-dog rescue. When we arrived and I learned the opportunities at animal shelters and rescues were significantly less abundant, I was at a loss. Then, I saw it — “Pets and Warriors.” “What is this?” I asked myself. I quickly found out through the Red Cross office at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center this program is a way for me and other pet owners to provide a bit of home to wounded warriors and family members by bringing our fur-kids through the hospital. Eighteen obedience classes, Canine Good Citizenship certification, a thorough veterinary exam and background check (for humans) later, and my husband and I celebrated Spanky’s first day on the job as a morale pet for the Red Cross. Spanky took his job seriously. He was petted, kissed and loved by staff members, patients and visiting family members and friends. He went room to room, human escorts in tow, laying on beds, in laps. Anywhere there was a free hand to pet him, he went to fulfill that hand’s need. As the then 7-year-old Boston terrier pranced through the halls at LRMC showing off his brand new little Red Cross volunteer scarf, it hit me. I’m not just giving back to my fellow ser-

vice members and their families. They’re giving back to me, too. We’ve done a number of visits since that first day, and every time he parades down the halls, I’m reminded of just how important it is for someone to have unconditional love to help them through hard times. For the LRMC staff, Spanky and the other pets offer a small break from what could be a really hard day; maybe they’ve had a difficult patient, maybe they’re feeling helpless at providing comfort to someone in pain. The list of difficulties goes on, but when the team of Red Cross volunteers (two- and four-legged) comes through the door, it gives them just a minute to forget the troubles they may be going through and just laugh and bask in the joy of dog licks and cat purrs. Then, there are the patients. We’ve listened to stories of their own pets and how much they miss them. We’ve heard about how many of their friends have or had Bostons and how those big ears brought so much chaos and personality to their lives. We’ve talked to them on Christmas and heard about what their families are doing at home before they visit the hospital, and we’ve talked to them about what they would’ve done on New Year’s if they hadn’t been in the hospital. So often, there’s an air of loneliness when you enter a patient’s room. There are times we’re the first ones to come in who aren’t there to check vitals, insert an IV or offer some form of painful physical therapy. Those are the necessary evils of rehabilitation, and the staff at LRMC are some of the finest medical professionals around, but at times, even their efforts to comfort just can’t stand up to the unspoken consolation provided by a wagging tail (or stub, in Spanky’s case) and big dog eyes. Unfortunately, we can’t go as often as we’d

like. The full schedules of two senior NCOs, TDYs and unforeseen scheduling conflicts cause us to only have the ability to go a few times a month. I look forward to every visit as if it’s the first, though. For my husband and me, sharing some of Spanky’s personality is as therapeutic for us as it is for the patients. For Spanky, though I don’t speak dog, the evidence of his happiness is apparent through his actions. He excitedly hops on laps, calmly lays next to patients, and sits with kids, smiling his big Boston smile, sporting his small crimson neck piece. Though we can’t share him as often as we’d like, other PaWS volunteers are active program participants. Toby, a high-fiving Yorkie, for example, is well-known among long-term patients and staff members. His human, Cindy, escorts him through the different wards regularly. Bubba, a very handsome miniature poodle, and Jack, a teacup poodle, are also program veterans, willing to step in anywhere a human needs to pet away their bad day. We’ve got large breeds, small breeds and even cats. That’s not to say program coordinators aren’t always looking for more bundles of furry joy to share in the experience. If your pet has the right temperament and is looking for a “job” with the Red Cross, contact the American Red Cross PaWS chairwoman, Leah McCracken, at leah.mccracken@redcross.org. ••• “Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day. It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.” - John Grogan, “Marley and Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog.”

He even asked us to say hello to our families back home. I’ll never forget that.” Obama departed Ramstein March 29 to return home to the White House in Washington, D.C.

The team is busy chopping, stirring and sauteing all of the ingredients for the day’s lunch meal. A cook brings dining facility manager Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Hopkins a bowl of marinara sauce to taste. The New York native samples a spoonful. “The flavors and spices should complement each other. You want a nice even blend,” Hopkins said. “This is what the customer is going to taste, and it has to be right.” Hopkins took over the Patriot Garden late last year, and when he arrived he found a facility that was operating over budget, losing custom-

ers and facing a shortage of cooks due to deployments. Chief Warrant Officer 2 William Michitsch, food service adviser for the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, said Hopkins came in and hit the ground running. “I’ve been here for over two and a half years and I’ve been through several dining facility managers, and … we’ve had a not so great of a past,” Michitsch said. “Sergeant Hopkins jumps in right into the rhythm and makes immediate changes. He and his staff are doing great things, and I’m proud to have him here.” Hopkins helped to bring in contracted cooks, added new menu items, including a potato, sandwich and ice cream bar, hosted theme meals and worked to shift the facility’s finances back into the black. Hopkins also got back to the basics. “We’re customer driven here,” he said. “We use the feedback we receive, and I grab the NCOs and we sit down

and brainstorm together to see what types of meals actually draw in the headcount and what we can do better from the last time. We also attend the dining facility council meetings. It’s a team effort all around.” Shift leader Sgt. Herman Smith is one of those NCOs. “This dining facility is on an up rise. We have new leadership. We have new everything, and starting with that leadership means a lot of changes and changes are good,” Smith said. “We’ve improved our head count and our actual crowd of diners. More Soldiers are starting to come in and they’re starting to enjoy the food more. We look forward to coming in and cooking everyday because of that. It makes us feel good inside knowing that they love our food.” The Patriot Garden Dining Facility, located in Bldg. 163, serves breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m., lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and dinner

from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. On weekends, brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m. “Come through our doors and at least experience what we have to offer,” Hopkins said. “We want to be the customer’s No. 1 choice when it comes to dining facilities.”

721st AMXS Airmen maintain mission readiness Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Holly Mansfield 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Pulling chocks, turning wrenches and marshaling aircraft. These are three things the Airmen of the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron cover during an average shift, 365 days a year at Ramstein. Helping conduct missions affecting military members downrange, the 721st AMXS keeps the aircraft mission ready. “We do aeromedical missions a lot and get to see wounded warriors come through from being deployed,” said Senior Airman Justin Kent, 721st AMXS hydraulic system journeyman. Ramstein gives its 721st AMXS Airmen a unique opportunity to see the different parts of the mission they might not see at other bases. “I have been here for nine months,” Kent said. “I worked back shop at my last base, so I didn’t get to see the impact of my job, because I was building breaks and actuators. Here I get to see the mission, and it just makes it a lot more rewarding. We do a lot of missions, and it feels good to be here at this base in this squadron, because I actually get to see the impact of my job. It’s an awesome feeling.” Seeing the impact of the completed job can bring an extra sense of reward to a member doing the work. At the 721st AMXS, newer Airmen are able to complete a task they might not have been able to do as a commercial aircraft mechanic. “I love my job. I get to see a lot of awesome things,” said Kent. “I’m a hydraulics technician, so I get to do a lot of maintenance work on the aircraft. I get to fix the aircraft, flight control systems, brake systems and landing systems. It’s a really awesome job, and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.” Airmen and civilians in the squadron need to be able to depend on each other to get the job done. Taking the time to make sure everything is correct could be the difference between life and death for

Senior Airman James Mabry, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, checks different parts of a C-17 Globemaster III during a pre-flight inspection March 12 on Ramstein. Members of the 721st AMXS perform inspections of aircraft to ensure all parts are mission ready before and after flights.

aircraft crew members and their passengers. “Our Airmen out on the flightline are very good at checking for all the details,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jack C. Johns III, 721st AMXS Maintenance superintendent. “I know I can trust them to get the job done effectively. I’m going to work for the wing in the next couple of weeks, however, in the past 2.5 years it has been an honor to serve with the professional, hardworking Airmen in this squadron.” For supervisors, knowing Airmen are doing their jobs safely and effectively can put them at ease. On the flip side, the Airmen need leaders that help them improve their craft. The young Airmen in the 721st AMXS have the opportunity to have their senior NCOs and NCOs out working with them.

“The NCOs and senior NCOs make the job completely easy, because they manage it and get everything prepared,” Kent said. “We know what we have to do to get the mission done correctly.” Members of the 721st AMXS took their camaraderie to the next level when they were able to ship out one of their own when he was in need. “We did a mission for one of our guys with cancer,” Kent said. “He had to be sent back to the states, and we got to launch him out and see him off. It was a really fulfilling mission.” Using skill, passion for the job and togetherness, members of the 721st AMXS are able to get aircraft in and out of Ramstein to accomplish the mission.

Wounded Heroes Service Center surpasses one-year mark by Brandon Beach 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

T

he Wounded Heroes Service Center on Kleber Kaserne opened its doors one year ago, and since that time, it has helped more than 1,700 wounded Soldiers from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center obtain new and replacement uniform items. Located in the Army and Air Force Exchange Service’s Military Clothing Store, the center is the result of a five-month construction project that began in August 2012. Initiated by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and funded by U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, the project entailed renovating the 720-square-foot warehouse facility by adding new wheelchair accessible ramps, automatic

doors, dressing rooms, handicapaccessible bathrooms and additional registers. “This was a $250,000 project, so we had to have command approval to get this done,” said Deniz Barcala, manager of the Kaiserslautern Military Clothing Store. “The 21st TSC is the reason this happened.” With the WHSC operating apart from the main store, wounded Soldiers now have the privacy they need when visiting Kleber Kaserne for their military clothing needs. Barcala said wounded Soldiers who are medically evacuated from a combat zone to Landstuhl arrive with often only the clothes on their backs. “When they are wounded, they don’t have time to pack their bags. Everything is left behind,” she said. “We make sure they get two sets of ACUs (Army Combat Uniform),

full PT (physical training) gear, long sleeve and short sleeve shirts, pants, jacket, boots, socks, undershirts and underwear.” Since the WHSC opened on Jan. 16, 2013, Barcala and her staff have issued more than $700,000 worth of military clothing, and wounded Soldiers don’t have to pay a penny. “The Army covers this,” Barcala said. “From AAFES, we also give them a $250 gift certificate to purchase regular, everyday clothes.” Robert Young has been a warehouse worker at Kleber MCS since June of last year. He and his fellow AAFES co-workers never hesitate to stop what they are doing to assist a group of wounded Soldiers arriving by shuttle bus at the store. “Everyone drops what they are doing,” said the Columbus, Ga., native. “We immediately meet the

Soldiers in the (WHSC). We get their paperwork, they get a shopping cart and we start pulling their sizes. We make sure their boots fit properly. If they want to try things on, we have two dressing rooms.” Young, a former member of the U.S. Army himself, added, “I used to be on the other end, so I know what it feels like to be appreciated by civilians and other military personnel.” For their efforts in assisting wounded Soldiers over the past years, Barcala and her staff received a certificate of appreciation in January from the Landstuhl Medical Transient Detachment. The WHSC on Kleber is the only facility of its kind in all of AAFES worldwide stores. “We feel privileged to give something back to the Soldiers,” Barcala said. “They are doing so much for us.”

Similar to Zumba, Bokwa is a cardio-based group exercise program where participants draw numbers and letters with their feet. Since participants use numbers and letters as steps, there isn’t a need to count steps, unlike most workouts. The high intensity workout provides an effective and fun option for Airmen to remain physically fit. Mavi, a native of South Africa, founded Bokwa in Los Angeles in 2000 and has taught instructors from 45 countries who teach classes in their local areas.

7th CSC Soldiers participate in CBRN Week ZAVENTEM, Belgium — As local radio announcers provided hourly updates on President Barack Obama’s visit to Belgium March 26, Soldiers from the 7th Civil Support Command’s 773rd Civil Support Team trained for possible future international crises. The 773rd CST Soldiers partnered with the Zaventem Fire Department during the fifth annual Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear training exercise, known as CBRN Week, March 24 to 28. During five days of joint training, more than 17 773rd CST Soldiers and approximately a dozen local firefighters tested their joint CBRN response techniques in a variety of scenarios. “My intention was to put different scenarios together to test training with different departments to work together and manage a HAZMAT scenario,” said 2nd Lt. Toralf

Deick, exercise observer controller and volunteer emergency responder with the Zaventem Fire Department. “Good to figure out how good you are and what you need to improve.” Deick planned and coordinated the different training sites based on his past experiences with the Zaventem Fire Department and from his full-time job as a firefighter with the local Vilvoorde Fire Department. One of Deick’s ideas was a joint Zaventem Fire Department and 773rd CST team reacting to a possible radiological and chemical spill caused by a simulated multiple vehicle accident involving a van possibly carrying hazardous material, as well as simulated victims trapped in the wreckage. The Soldiers’ and firefighters’ bulky protective suits and equipment turn the simple act of sample testing, monitoring, climbing a ladder or treating a possibly contaminated patient into an extremely difficult physical challenge.

Page 18 exercise, from Page 16 of sports events, building on the relationships of the Saber Guardian participants. “You want to be able to foster relationships for the future,” said Staff Sgt. Juan Ariza, communications NCO with the 7th CSC. “You want your neighbors to be with you. “This is a joint event, not a U.S. event,” Ariza continued. “It’s for all the nations to be able to participate and to do something that will last forever.” Taking part in the cultural day helped service members and civilians from all nations learn more about each other in an environment outside of work and out of uniform. “The important thing about exercises like this is that we’re working with our NATO partners and if we only come in and we spend all our time at Novo Selo and we’re always doing our job, we’re not learning about their backgrounds, their cultures and how they do things,” Rosewitz said. “I think this is a fantastic opportunity to work with our many partners to bring us all together and to forge a better team.” The cultural day also provided all the participating nations

Kaiserslautern American an opportunity to see just how the U.S. service members are outside of work. “They see us in a different light,” Knight said. “They see us in a non-military side and they see the relaxed and fun side.” “They got to see how we’re able to bond together and work together regardless of your rank, what unit you work for or what branch of service you’re in,” Ariza said. “We’re able to come together and work as a team.” The training received during Saber Guardian is designed to replicate the closest possible type of dynamic environment required to address possible future situations and provides service members a unique opportunity to enhance their skills and learn more about the various cultures they will be working with. “I think this is a fantastic opportunity to work with our many partners to bring us all together and to forge a better team,” Rosewitz said. “The realistic thing is that we’re always going to go as a coalition to anything that we do and we have got to be able to work with our partners. Cultural day gave us the opportunity to work with them and to build a better team.”

cbrn, from Page 17 “Training is going great,” Sgt. Maj. Stef Vandersmissen, Zaventem FD firefighter. “(It is) interesting to see my guys doing their normal duties in a different circumstance for them. The integration with the (773rd) CST is very good.” “Every time we come up here it is a different type of training with a different type of scenario,” said Cpl. Eric Song, survey team member, 773rd CST. “(The training) gives us different points of view on how to look at certain incidences. They’re very proficient. They’re first responders, so their priorities are (extraction and) saving lives.” Song said the 773rd

April 4, 2014 CST’s main function is to quarantine, assess, monitor and mitigate a potential CBRN incident that may affect the surrounding population. Also, during the second day of training in a field outside of town, the firefighters and the 773rd CST CBRN team worked together to decontaminate and triage possible survivors. “That was unique,” said Army Staff Sgt. Jessica Searcy, administrative NCO, 773rd CST. “Normally we only deal with our 22 (person) team.” Mid-week the firefighters and 773rd CST attended a military congress workshop where they listened to instructional speeches and participated in discussions with leading CBRN

experts from the Belgian military. “This is one of my favorite annual training events that I look forward to, (every year),” Song said. The fourth day had the 773rd CST Soldiers cut open several vehicles using the Jaws of Life after the vehicles’ air bags deployed. The closing ceremony on the fifth day included the laying of a wreath at a memorial for a fallen Zaventem Fire Department firefighter, who had recently died in the line of duty. “It is always good to work with different nations, because we’re in foreign consequence management,” said Army Staff Sgt. John Gribble, survey team NCO, 773rd CST.

‘Supplement’ your knowledge by Capt. Jeremy F. Brooks Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

very Service member knows certain basic skills to survive in combat. Knowledge of dietary supplements is another matter. Fewer than half of Army Soldiers understand the U.S. government does not require manufacturers to demonstrate the effectiveness of supplements commonly used for bodybuilding, weight loss, energy and endurance, according to a recent study from the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. One third incorrectly believed the Food and Drug Administration, which oversees regulation of pharmaceuticals, enforces safety requirements for supplements. In the quest to gain an “edge,” many service members resort to dietary supplements. Supplement use is prevalent in the Department of Defense, and consumption occurs for a variety of reasons: to improve performance, to lose weight, to gain muscle mass and/or to improve health. Unfortunately, use of some supplements has resulted in adverse events, which compromised performance and health rather than improve it. Certain supplements, such as multivitamins, are generally safe, but other supplements can pose a

hazard to health and jeopardize careers because of non-listed ingredients that could cause a positive urine drug screen. Bodybuilding and weight loss supplements are in high-risk categories because of questionable ingredients and should be used with caution, if at all. Keep in mind, many supplements are mislabeled accidentally or intentionally. In addition, many supplements are not made according to minimal standards of manufacturing. They often are not what they say they are. In response to such safety concerns and awareness lapses, the Human Performance Resource Center and DOD launched Operation Supplement Safety. The purpose of OPSS is to educate service members and retirees, their family members, leaders, health care providers and DOD civilians about dietary supplements and how to choose supplements wisely. Features include access to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive database, searchable with more than 86,000 entries, which include origins and explanations of supplements, existing evidence of effectiveness and known harmful interactions with other supplements, pharmaceuticals and foods. OPSS also provides informational vid-

eos, answers to frequently asked questions and more. Before purchasing or taking a supplement, visit HPRC-online.org/opss. Make sure your supplement meets industry standards with the NSF Certified for Sport online directory of certified products. Search the directory for your specific product. If you’re in the market for new supplements, download a list of all certified products before you buy. Get answers to frequently asked questions about dietary supplement ingredients, performance and weight loss. Learn how to spot bogus claims, suspicious products and other red flags. Check out the OPSS Facebook page for the latest in supplement news and information. For peak performance, service members should eat healthy and exercise regularly. Supplements aren’t intended to be a food substitute, because they can’t replicate all of the nutrients and benefits of whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables. So, depending on your situation and your eating habits, dietary supplements may not be worth the expense. For questions on nutrition classes and services offered at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, call 590-7144 or 06371-9464-7144. KMC schools join innovative league by Jason Tomassini Digital Promise Today Digital Promise, a national, independent nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to accelerate innovation in education, announced Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe, Kaiserslautern District as one of nine new members accepted into the League of Innovative Schools. The League of Innovative Schools is a national coalition of school districts and educational agencies that is both a professional learning network and an incubator for innovative educational practices. The League brings together educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to demonstrate, evaluate, and replicate promising ideas, with the goal of improving student achievement. “I am thrilled that our district has been selected to participate in the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools,” said Dr. Dell McMullen, Kaiserslautern District superintendent. “Participation in the League gives our district the unique oppor-

tunity to collaborate with innovative educators across the United States as we work together to transform to a 21st century learning environment and improve achievement and engagement for all of our students.” The Kaiserslautern District was selected from a competitive and national pool of applicants, based on its leadership, evidence of results, innovative vision for learning powered by technology, and commitment to collaborating with other League members. Upon joining the League, members will share lessons learned, participate in national and regional forums, and partner with research institutions, technology developers, and one another to deliver better results for students. “The idea behind the League is simple, but ambitious: Innovative superintendents can support each other in transforming the learning environment and improving engagement and achievement,” said Karen Cator, president and chief executive officer of Digital Promise. “By adding these nine new members and the sum

of their experiences, the League can become an even stronger catalyst for improving opportunity for students around the country.” The nine members of the League of Innovative Schools spring 2014 cohort are: • Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe, Kaiserslautern District: Kaiserslautern, Germany • Highline Public Schools: Burien, Wash. • Knox County Schools: Knoxville, Tenn. • Lexington County School District One: Lexington, S.C. • Mentor Public Schools: Mentor, Ohio • Pascack Valley Regional High School District: Montvale, N.J. • Richland School District Two: Columbia, S.C. • Rowan-Salisbury Schools: Salisbury, N.C. • South Fayette Township School District: McDonald, Pa. With these additions, the League now includes 46 school districts and education agencies in 25 states, repre-

senting nearly 3 million students. “We are excited to welcome the new members of the League and to offer these districts the chance to learn together,” said Sara Schapiro, director of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools.”These exemplary educators recognize that while there is no ‘silver bullet’ in education, by coming together to tackle some big problems, district leaders, researchers, and entrepreneurs can make a meaningful difference.” New members were officially welcomed March 26 to 28 at the national League of Innovative Schools conference at Sunnyside Unified School District in Tucson, Ariz. Digital Promise is an independent, bipartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to spur innovation in education. Through its work with educators, technologists, researchers and leading thinkers, Digital Promise supports comprehensive research and development to benefit lifelong learners and provide Americans with the knowledge and skills needed to compete in the global economy.
