Ramstein ACEs regional exercise Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein Airmen participated in an Agile Combat Employment exercise designed to test the wing’s ability to move cargo and personnel across Europe, April 19 and 20. ACE as a concept was developed by U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa as a way for units to operate from locations with varying levels of capacity and support. As part of this ACE event, four C-130J Super Hercules aircraft were launched from Ramstein to provide airlift support for the 48th Fighter Wing from RAF Lakenheath, England and the 52nd Fighter Wing from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany while also conducting training for members of the 37th Airlift Squadron. “The 86th AW was very interested in gathering data on what it would take for our C-130s to disperse from Ramstein and set up an outbase while simultaneously supporting a See ACE, Page 2

COVID vaccines available to all tiers by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Group has opened appointments for Tier 2 beneficiaries age 18 and older to receive the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at Ramstein. Service members, U.S. civilian employees, adult dependents, and other TRICARE beneficiaries in all tiers can schedule vaccinations using one of two websites, and personnel are now permitted to

receive the vaccine at any military hospital, clinic or Department of Defense vaccination site that offers the vaccine. Members are encouraged to use www.tricareonline.com as the primary tool to schedule appointments. After logging in, click on “appointments” at the top of the screen and select “COVID vaccination” as the appointment type. Family members and other beneficiaries

enrolled in DEERS who do not have a common access card can login using the DS Logon option. Individuals who cannot use the TRICARE website can now schedule appointments through the Defense Health Agency Appointing Portal at informatics-stage.health.mil/COVAX/. The portal is accessible from any device and does not require a See COVID VACCINES, Page 3

Page 2 ACE from Page 1 Fighter Wing ACE movement,” said Maj. Bradley Breedlove, 86th Airlift Wing ACE lead. This exercise also served as an initial test of the wing’s ACE capabilities. Previously, the 37th AS and 86th Communications Squadron practiced transporting and setting up a communications network at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium. “This time we brought enough equipment with us to stay the night and operate from Chièvres Air Base, which is the crawl-to-walk phase of our ACE training,” Breedlove said. “As a bonus, we had the unique opportunity to exercise our ACE skills while at the same time integrating with the 48th and 52d Fighter Wing ACE programs. “Being that the 86th AW is the only airlift asset in USAFE, we needed to collect data on what it takes to support ACE movements for wings in the region,” Breedlove continued. “These muscle movements we’re practicing during our ACE events are vital skills that have to be mastered to ensure successful operations in this theater.” One important capability is to rapidly transport cargo over land to meet aircraft at an operating location so that cargo can be loaded up for movement or airdrop to another location.

“In a typical situation, the pallets would leave with the aircraft, but if there was a situation where other equipment needed to get prioritized for transport, practicing the scenario as we did gives us the ability to meet the aircraft at another location if needed,” said Staff Sgt. John Bruno Ruiz Camacho, 86th Operations Support Squadron joint airdrop inspector. “It helps with flexibility and reduces the amount of back and forth the aircrew have to go through. They could do another mission somewhere else while we’re on the way with other supplies.” The ACE concept is still new to many units, as more Airmen get involved the more agile the 86th AW becomes.

Kaiserslautern Military Community’s Family Housing While online shopping has been a valuable resource for all of us during the pandemic, we want to remind base residents that local delivery drivers do not have base access. Deliveries from companies such as Amazon.de and other mail services will be denied entry to base housing. Base residents should contact shipping companies directly to coordinate pick up location/time or utilize delivery drop box services on the economy. Security Forces requests that residents do not meet delivery drivers right outside the gate as this can cause added traffic. For questions, please feel free to reach out to the 569th USFPS (Commercial: 06315366060) or 86th SFS squadron

(Commercial: 06371472050). As a reminder, the best option for receiving packages is meeting the delivery driver off base or picking up from a designated off base drop box location. Operations Wing Inspector General. “The IG team helped build the framework to test the resilience of the entire enterprise collectively. But it remains our Airmen and commanders that harness these opportunities to develop Agile Combat Employment capabilities with en route Multi-Capable Airman.” The IG office achieved this outstanding Air Force level award through hard work and commitment to the wing’s strategic priorities. During the initial COVID-19 response, the IG office members pioneered the wing’s first enterprise control center and wrote the

command and control standards that helped synchronize over 270 contaminated patient evacuations. The team concurrently led a wing-wide pandemic operations audit across 14 weeks and ten installations resulting in 11 process improvements. Additionally, the IG team benchmarked the wing’s biannual Nodal Lightning readiness exercise, which fuses live and constructed events across eight bases and 18 separate operating locations in two theaters. Nodal Lightning is now the Air Mobility Command standard for en route enterprise exercises. “To be recognized as the best U.S. & GERMAN ATTORNEYS U.S. & GERMAN DIVORCES • SUPPORT ISSUES • EEO WILLS & PROBATE • EMPLOYMENT • PERSONAL INJURY MSPB • CONTRACTOR ISSUES • TAX ADVISORS

This award recognizes Barger’s leadership and skill as a top Air Force inspector for 2020. The 521st AMOW, with elements at ten other installations, relies every day on strong partnerships to execute the mission, care for Airmen and families, and prepare for the future. The IG team harnesses these partnerships to plan and execute exercises like Nodal Lightning, building muscle memory under contested conditions, and expanding nodal capability. “To know that our inspection program is the most outstanding in the Air Force is an affirmation that the nation can depend on us to put the rapid in Rapid Global Mobility,” said Williams.

Airlifter of the Week: 65 ABS NCO leads transient alert by Senior Airman John R. Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A noncommissioned officer assigned to the 65th Air Base Squadron at Lajes Field, Portugal, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week, April 8, for strong leadership and training to support Agile Combat Employment. Tech. Sgt. Alex M. Sotelo, 65th ABS transient alert section chief, and his team of 10 aircraft maintainers provided critical ground maintenance support to multiple aircraft, including B-2 Spirit stealth bombers during a recent Bomber Task Force deployment. “You’ve been named the Airlifter of the Week for your great work on the Bomber Task Force, all the great things you do on the flight line, and just making things happen,” said Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander, to Sotelo. “It’s no small feat. I greatly appreciate all that you do for the 86th and the 65th, and we’re honored to highlight your great works.” Lajes is home to the 65th Air Base Group, one of the 86th AW’s geographically separated units, and plays a vital role in combat operations by serving as a trans-Atlantic bridge to enable the expeditionary movement of war fighters, warplanes and global communications to combatant commanders and supporting Joint, Coalition and NATO operations. Sotelo’s efforts at Lajes enabled the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, to exercise hot-pit refueling procedures and engage in fifth generation fighter integration and foreign deterrence operations in the Arctic Region. “We made sure they were taken care of,” Sotelo said. “We supported them and their maintenance crew to get the gas to keep going and get out of here safely, quickly and efficiently.” In addition to transient alert duties, Sotelo coordinated with the local 721st Aerial Port Squadron detachment to obtain forklift and aircraft stair training for his maintainers to fulfill ACE initiatives. “It was crazy how fast it got utilized,” Sotelo said. “A lot of us that were just trained, including myself, were out there within a couple weeks, taking care of a C-5 (Super Galaxy aircraft) to get them downloaded and get the equipment for the B-2s taken care of.” As multi-capable Airmen, the short-notice support Sotelo and his team were able to provide saved the APS overtime costs and ensured no delays in the BTF mission.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Alex M. Sotelo, 65th Air Base Squadron transient alert section chief, is congratulated by Chief Master Sgt. Justin R. Deisch, 65th Air Base Group superintendent, for being recognized as Airlifter of the Week at Lajes Field, Portugal, April 8. In addition to leading the transient alert section and securing cross-training to support the multicapable Airman concept, Sotelo served as the 65th Air Base Group’s project officer for the 86th AW’s virtual annual award ceremony. “We had to plan it around COVID, making sure everyone was socially distanced within our facility, and we tackled the challenge,” Sotelo said. “My small team of four helped quite a bit and ensured that everyone was not just safe from COVID, but had a good time and got to enjoy the ceremony.” Outside of work, Sotelo, a Sterling, Illinois, native, enjoys fishing, biking, gaming and watching the ocean from his balcony while sipping coffee. Phone calls to his wife and two sons are also an everyday occurrence, since Sotelo is at Lajes unaccompanied. While leadership recognized Sotelo for his outstanding dedication to the job and support of the 86th AW’s reputation for ready and professional airlift, he made a point to recognize that it was a team effort. “The real MVPs are my team,” Sotelo said. “Whatever I ask them to do, they get it done. They’re the ones that lead the way.” U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Alex M. Sotelo, 65th Air Base Squadron transient alert section chief, salutes Col. Tammy S. Hinkston, 65th Air Base Group commander, after being recognized as Airlifter of the Week at Lajes Field, Portugal, April 8. 86 MDSS Airmen prescribe new network

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jose Gomez Miranda, 86th Medical Support Squadron medical information services flight chief, left, and Tech. Sgt. Kaci Stephens, 86th MDSS medical information services flight client support noncommissioned officer in charge, review the inventory of computer stations for the dental clinic at Ramstein Air Base, April 6. The small flight is charged with migrating the entire 86th Medical Group from the Air Force Network to the Medical Community of Interest, the Military Health System’s new computing network.

Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Jocelyn A. Ford 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Behind the scenes of the 86th Medical Group, within the Medical Support Squadron, is a small flight doing big things. The Medical Information Services Flight is working tirelessly to not only keep the Medical Group running, but migrate systems to help safeguard us all. The flight is one of diversity, consisting of one officer and a few enlisted, general schedule, contractor and local national employees. Together they service the 86th MDG information technology systems, answering the same types of trouble tickets the rest of the base submits to the 86th Communications Squadron. “Our flight’s job is to maintain access to the computers, access to the internet, phone services, and just keep the med group up and running,” said Tech. Sgt. Kaci Stephens, 86th MDSS medical information services flight client support noncommissioned officer in charge. Enlisted personnel attend technical school and leave with the Air Force specialty code Health Services Management. The formal education touches on a multitude of skills to prepare them for the many possibilities they may encounter, such as working the front desk, resource management, patient administration and much more. It isn’t until they

arrive at their duty station and are assigned to a flight that they get the focused, hands-on training required to fulfill their duties. When assigned to the medical information services flight, obtaining the CompTIA Security+ certification is a priority. “When you get assigned to a systems flight, we learn what comm does, but in a very, very short time,” Stephens said. “We maintain the same kind of operations for the most part, just very specific to medical users.” For several weeks, this flight has been migrating the medical group’s systems from the Air Force Network, to a network called Medical Community of Interest (Med-COI). “The Medical Community of Interest is the Military Health System, MHS, new computing network,” said 1st Lt. Joshua Fritzsche, 86th MDSS medical information services flight commander. “Medics from Army, Navy, and Air Force are all leaving their services-provided unclassified network and joining the Med-COI.” Getting all services on the same network may not be an easy task, but it can come with big rewards. Being on a common network allows all to work on the MHS’s newest electronic health record called MHS Genesis. “Genesis replaces some pretty old, or legacy systems,” Fritzsche said. “Some of them were developed in the ‘80s and ‘90s, with really kind of a DOS hot key

interface to them. So they're kind of an adventure to use.” MHS Genesis is not only for the active duty components; Veteran’s Affairs are also set to use the system. “Imagine your health record following you when you separate, retire or otherwise leave the service,” Fritzsche said. “That's what MHS Genesis is going to bring, and in order to get there we have to be on a common computing environment, so that's where Med-COI comes in. Their leadership acknowledged all the hard work going into preparation for the network migration, on top of keeping the medical group running daily, and submitted the team for recognition. “When you win an Air Force level award, especially one for a team this size, and you're talking (Air Force Medical Service), we're the best systems team in the Air Force,” Stephens said. “It gives a lot of people hope that like, ‘hey, my hard work is actually being recognized and I'm actually contributing to something, and someone's actually seeing that I'm contributing to

Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron and the 606th Air Control Squadron traveled to Croatia to host a class from March 15th to April 2nd for Croatian and Slovenian air force military students to increase their Control and Reporting Center’s capabilities. CRCs are vital in guiding aircraft through their assigned area during a mission. They also enhance Agile Combat Employment capabilities by making sure CRCs operated by partner countries and allies can speak the same tactical language. “CRCs are responsible for battle management, weapons control, surveillance and link management,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Corey Farmer, 606th ACS exercises and plans noncommissioned officer in charge. “We tactically control aircraft and identify any other aircraft within our area of responsibility through KAISERSLAUTERN

the surveillance technicians via radar feeds or tactical data links. At the end of the day, we deconflict aircraft and get them overhead of whoever is requesting them.” Farmer served as a subject matter expert during the course, ensuring the students would be prepared for an upcoming exercise. “We are preparing them for Astral Knight 21, which is a multinational exercise that stresses the importance of cooperation between us and NATO allies,” Farmer said. “The main focus of the class was getting the Croatian and Slovenian controllers prepared to control with new communication standards.“ The goal of the three-week course was to certify the students as either master controllers or intercept controllers. It also served as a force multiplier. “The training conducted prepared these students to train and certify members of their Croatian and Slovenia air forces respectively,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. James Stewart, 435th CRSS security forces air advisor. “This training ensured that our partners are in line with NATO standards and are

able to be self-sufficient in maintaining this critical capability.” While the tactical benefits are clear, there were also intangible gains such as building personal relationships and expanding perspectives. “During the class I got to see a different point of view than I would traditionally get from U.S. Air Force CRCs,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class John Roache, 606th ACS weapons director. “That includes operating on a different system with different techniques and standards for accomplishing the same mission.” Classes like this increase interoperability between the U.S. and NATO partners and are important to security and mission success throughout the region. The 435th CRSS Air Advisors are security cooperation experts who specialize in building partner capacity and building partnerships, a critical element to furthering U.S. and NATO objectives. Air Advisors use their security cooperation skills to think strategically, bridge operationally, and execute tactically to aid partner nations in advancing their interoperability.

The 12-mile ruck must be completed in three hours, testing an Airmen’s fortitude. The Ranger Assessment and Preparation Course, hosted by the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, is designed to familiarize Airmen with the skills and challenges they will face if they get accepted to the United States Army Ranger School.

This portion of the course tests an Airmen’s confidence and combat water survival.

Inter-European Air Forces Academy honors fifth anniversary with Second Virtual Professional Military Education Course Graduation

U.S. Air Force Capt. David Carte, Inter-European Air Forces Academy instructor, conducts a performance assessment of NATO students working through a virtual team building exercise at Kapaun Air Station, Feb. 25. The IEAFA students practiced principles of effective leadership they can apply daily in their own armed forces.

Story and photos by Inter-European Air Forces Academy Thirty-five students from 13 ally and partner nations across the European theater graduated the Inter-European Air Forces Academy’s Professional Military Education course on March 26, its second virtual PME course to date. In accordance with COVID-19 regulations, students from Albania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States collaborated virtually. The PME course coincided with IEAFA’s fifth anniversary on March 23. Members of the 92nd Military Police Company, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron and Ramstein’s Fire Department joined forces to thank Ramstein Intermediate students as part of the school’s Purple Up celebration on March 14. Purple Up is just one of several events during the Month of the Military Child. Wearing purple symbolizes a show of support and thanks to military youth for their strength and sacrifices.

“Our Professional Military Education courses establish a foundation of trust and cooperation with our allies and partners,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Joshua Killian, IEAFA Director of Operations. “Officers and NCOs from across NATO and Partnership for Peace countries come together to develop new skills and share perspectives as members of a multinational, cross-functional, and rank-diverse team. This shared experience helps to foster teamwork and collaboration across borders, during major exercises, and in operational assignments where allies and partners work together to identify innovative solutions to our most pressing challenges.”

U.S. Air Force MSgt. David Sanner, Inter-European Air Forces Academy instructor, moderates a discussion between guest speakers and students during IEAFA’s Professional Military Education course at Kapaun Air Station, Feb. 22. This course features various leaders from U.S. and NATO organizations who share real-world expertise and leadership lessons with students.

IEAFA develops lifelong ties among allies and partners and underscores the importance of a professional NCO corps. The PME course integrates the Inter-European Noncommissioned Officer Academy and Inter-European Squadron Officer School, blending fifty percent of the five-week curriculum into a combined officer/NCO experience. During these blended lessons, officers and enlisted personnel from across the European theater work through cultural, linguistic, and rank disparities to arrive at common solutions for challenges presented throughout the course. Since its first course in 2016, IEAFA has trained and educated

over 1,000 students from over 40 ally and partner nations across the European theater. IEAFA is expanding its partnership-building mission to the African continent and growing its technical training courses. “There are leadership courses and then there is IEAFA,” said British Armed Forces Cpl. Sally Raimondo. “The unique blended learning environment creates an inclusive platform where different experiences enable a greater understanding and appreciation of other views. This level of context allows for a variety of perspectives and challenges the status quo, preparing the student to continually develop as an effective leader.”

Success like this is partially achieved through IEAFA’s direct organizational alignment with the Warrior Preparation Center, the USAFE-AFAFRICA Directorate of Operations, Strategic Deterrence and Nuclear Integration, and its close ties with USAFE-AFAFRICA Directorate of Plans, Programs and Analyses. IEAFA leans forward into the future by adapting to the dynamic security environment. It remains an agile and responsive tool that supports the priorities of Gen. Jeff Harrigian, USAFE-AFAFRICA commander, and develops interoperability of the theater’s only common weapons system: its people.

TIMELINESS

Whether the event is social or business, punctuality in Germany is important. An invitation for dinner at eight usually means

anywhere between 7:55 and 8 p.m. If you are planning a party, tell your German friends the time you actually want and expect them to arrive — don’t plan to have that 15 minute American buffer zone to put the finishing touches on your hors d’oeuvres. There are reports of an “Akademisches Viertel” (academic quarter-hour) clause which gets you off the hook if you are less than 15 minutes late. The best thing to do is just to be on time. you find yourself running late, call to announce your late arrival (preferably before the time you were expected). Remember that in Germany, time is usually on the twentyfour hour scale, like in the military, not the twelve-hour one. Sometimes when speaking, Germans will use the 12 hour clock. Usually, this does not cause confusion. Very few people in Germany eat dinner at 8 in the morning.

Nurse practitioner gives back to Baumholder Military Community Story and photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center U.S. Army Health Clinic Baumholder serves a military community of just over 8,000 people, set in the remote, forested hills of Baumholder, Germany. In the small community, readiness is essential, both physically and mentally. With over 24 years of service in uniform, Diana Bluthardt now serves as the sole psychiatric nurse practitioner for the community and is committed to enhancing the latter. Bluthardt, who works at U.S. Army Health Clinic Baumholder’s Behavioral Health Clinic and also serves as a medical provider for the Baumholder Military Community’s Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care program, chose to continue serving in the Army Reserves following more than a decade of active duty commitment. Although many Soldiers who later earn college degrees choose to crossover to commissioned positions, after earning her nursing degree Bluthardt chose to stay enlisted, serving as a combat medic and later a Licensed Practical Nurse before retiring. “Even though I did get my fouryear degree and I’m a registered nurse, I stayed enlisted because I enjoyed what I was doing in the unit,” explains Bluthardt. “It was something different than what I did as a civilian.” Following her military career, Bluthardt went on to get her nurse practitioner certification specializing in psychiatric and mental health care before being employed by the State of Minnesota. “It was very difficult to see veterans being committed for mental health, or mental health and substance use,” explains Bluthardt. “Truly, people don't know what to do with many of the veterans who are struggling.” Realizing an opportunity existed to help those individuals while they are in uniform led Bluthardt to seek a position within the Department of Defense. She wanted to help better manage mental health in the ranks before it became a larger problem. According to the Army Public

Diana Bluthardt, a psychiatric nurse practitioner at U.S. Army Health Clinic Baumholder’s Behavior Health Clinic and medical provider for the Baumholder Military Community’s Substance Use Disorder Clinical Care program, discusses treatment progress with a Soldier, March 17. Bluthardt, the sole psychiatric nurse practitioner in the Baumholder Military Community, served 24 years in uniform which led to her return to the Department of Defense in an effort to give back to service members and help treat mental health disorders before they worsen.

Health Center’s Health of the Force report, 16 percent of Soldiers are diagnosed with one or more behavioral health disorder and 3.7 percent are diagnosed with a substance use disorder. “(USAHC Baumholder Behavioral Health) utilizes a multidisciplinary approach,” explains Dr. Mark Simpson, a clinical psychologist and chief of USAHC Baumholder Behavioral Health. “We have social workers, psychologists, and a psychiatric nurse practitioner, which is the role (Bluthardt) plays. So we form, oftentimes, a treatment team, viewing and treating patients from different perspectives and different disciplines.” According to Simpson, out of 10 different providers serving patients at USAHC Baumholder, Bluthardt is the only practitioner who may prescribe psychiatric medications. “Sometimes medical emergencies come in, and she fields all

those emergencies,” said Simpson. “She goes above and beyond, is very dedicated to the patients who she serves and is really an excellent team member.” While Bluthardt is now totally dedicated to her position as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, she was previously not expecting to be treating mental health full time. “I did many years as nursing but said I would never do behavioral health or psychiatry. However, I was always drawn to the field and ended up with patients who needed more assistance (than others could offer),” said Bluthardt. A change in position came while serving in uniform. Following a deployment to Iraq and assigned to a military detention center, Bluthardt was treating patients with mental health illness and says the experience made her reconsidered the effectiveness of mental health care

and hasn’t looked back since. “You know, we're here to serve. We're not here to be criticizing or anything, we're here to serve (service members) and help,” said Bluthardt. “(Behavioral health

practitioners) take this job because we want to be here and to give back. These patients are important, the Soldiers are important, the retirees and whoever I see. So I'm glad that I can give back to them.”

Allied, partners practice air policing scenarios over Baltic Sea by Allied Air Command Public Affairs Office Exercise Ramstein Alloy 21-1 is aimed to sharpen and hone skills used in Baltic Air Policing (BAP) efforts. This iteration will include Italy, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and partners including Finland and Sweden. The exercise will cover two days of training practicing realworld scenarios faced by personnel deployed in support of BAP. The scenarios covered will be a slow-moving intercept of an AN-2 and civilian communication loss with escort. Focus on other areas such as a simulated crew ejection with activation of the Search and Rescue chain, air-to-air combat training, air-to-air refueling and others will occur in the later iterations. It is important to consistently drill and practice procedures and coordination processes among Allies and partners.

Rated Preparatory Program now accepting applications for FY21 Fall class by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Active duty Air Force officers and enlisted personnel interested in becoming rated officers have until May 25 to apply for the Fall 2021 Rated Preparatory Program. As the program continues to expand, the fall class will partner and train with the Civil Air Patrol wing in Columbus, Indiana. “We recently completed the third iteration of RPP, with 40 officers and 20 enlisted personnel in attendance,” said Maj. Sean Stumpf, Aircrew Task Force branch chief. “The inclusion of enlisted personnel in the program marked a significant milestone and helps cast a wide net to attract the best the Air Force has to offer and is another step toward expanding the program. We plan to continue to grow in FY22 and FY23, ultimately peaking at 240 students per year.” Officers who complete the program are required to apply to the next available Undergraduate Flying Training selection board. Enlisted participants are required to apply to at least one of the three Air Force commissioning sources: U.S. Air Force Academy, Reserve Officer Training Corps or Officer

Training School. Applicants selected for RPP will first complete a self-paced, online ground course followed by

a one-week, in-resident course to introduce them to aviation fundamentals. Program participants will garner approximately seven to 10

flight hours, ground instruction and additional training time in a Federal Aviation Administrationapproved flight simulator.

“The Rated Preparatory Program is a unique opportunity for officers and enlisted,” said Col. John O’Dell, Aircrew Task Force deputy director. “For anyone who is considering pursuing a career as a rated officer, and wants to gain basic aviation skills to become more competitive, RPP can make a significant difference. The experiences gained in RPP will help members compete at Undergraduate Flying Training boards.” Senior Airman Dell Fonda, radar airfield and weather systems technician, who recently participated in the Spring 2021 class, agreed. “The opportunity to participate in this program reaffirmed my desire to be a rated officer and what I need to do to achieve it,” Fonda said. “The Rated Preparatory Program has been intense but has given me the insight on how to prepare a successful OTS package, as well as what to expect in Undergraduate Pilot Training if I get selected to be a pilot.” Interested applicants can find additional information on how to apply through PSDM 21-31 on the MyPers website at https://mypers. af.mil/.

BritCafe Ramstein seeks name for mascot

Story and photo by Debbie Skora BritCafe Communications and Events Coordinator The BritCafe Ramstein is holding a contest until April 30 to “Name the Pig,” its Union Jackbedecked mascot. The hereto unnamed mascot can always be seen around the café, greeting customers daily, and has become quite a hit on social media. “We just felt it was time he had a name,” remarked Gabriella Palmer, BritCafe General Manager. “If you’re going to be a celebrity, people have to know what to call you.” BritCafe wanted to get their customers involved in the process, too. “We have people who come in here every day,” Palmer remarked, “They are not just our customers, they really are our community, our friends.”

BBQ take out, German sausage

To build a sense of community here in Germany is the mission of the BritCafe, which is operated by the United Kingdom Support Unit. BritCafe offers a selection of British specialties, including freshbaked scones & clotted cream, fish and chips, curry, and soft drinks popular in Britain such as Ribena and Irn Bru. You can even order a sandwich made-to-order with Marmite or Branston’s Pickles, if that’s what you fancy! Those wishing to name the pig can drop their suggestions in the box in the café, Building 936 on Ramstein across from the library, or comment on a “Name the Pig” post on BritCafe’s Facebook page. The winning name will be selected and announced the first week of May on the Facebook page. The customer who suggests the winning name will receive lunch and a drink of their choice, courtesy of the BritCafe!

Swap “bored” for board: Six great Euro-themed board games by MilitaryInGermany.com Even during a non-COVID era, boredom often drives us to do one thing: open a glowing screen. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it’s good to have balance when it comes to screen time. There’s a lot to be said for opening a board game instead. This is a golden age of board games, and Germany is a country that adores them. The benefits of playing board games are many. You can absorb yourself in a way that isn’t possible online. You can be social with those who are closest to you. And you can be transported without ever leaving the house.

Ticket To Ride: Europe board game.

Even better, there are many board games that are set in or inspired by the place you live. Which means you can deepen your connection to and knowledge of Europe in the process. With that in mind, here are six great board games — for adults and older children — with European connections. All are available for purchase online. But check first with your local library: it’s entirely possible that you can borrow the game! Ticket to Ride: Europe This is a classic game of strategy, luck and railroad building. This is also a game that is hugely popular in Germany:

Photo by Mitch Hutchinson / shutterstock.com

the original Ticket to Ride even won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres, a German prize that is the board game equivalent of an Oscar or an MVP award. Set on a beautiful board and intended for up to five players, Ticket to Ride Europe will quickly improve your grasp of European geography. This game is also good for younger players: ages 7 and up can generally compete quite well. Memoir ’44 As its name suggests, Memoir ’44 is a strategy board game that allows players to re-enact some of the most crucial World War II European battles from 1944. These include the landing at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and many others. Though the learning curve can be slightly steep, the game itself is immensely satisfying once you get the hang of it. Plus, it allows players to more thoroughly understand the stakes, risks, and decision making processes of a very tenuous time in European (and world) history. The base game is excellent, and has several expansions available. Castles of Mad King Ludwig Even after all this time, Neuschwanstein Castle still fills

people with wonder and mystery. Why did the king build it? Was he really mad? These questions – and the castle itself – have sparked theme parks, books, graphic novels, and more. That includes Castles of Mad King Ludwig, a fantastic game in which players compete as contractors to build the best castle in nineteenth-century Bavaria. It’s a blast, and surprisingly good at getting the competitive juices flowing. It will also give you that much more appreciation for the real castle when you can finally go see it in person! Catan A global phenomenon with several expansion sets, Catan is German to the core. Invented by Klaus Teuber, a German designer, Catan won the Spiel des Jahres game of the year when it was released in 1995. The game is fantastic for many reasons. It rests on a simple and fun premise (create your own island), involves a great deal of strategy, is highly competitive, and forces players to adapt to sometimes rapidly changing circumstances. It’s no wonder the game is popular in Silicon Valley boardrooms. But it can be just as fun for anyone who wants a better way to

spend time during lockdown (or on rainy German days). Risk Europe Risk Europe provides several twists on the original classic. Set during medieval times, the game focuses – naturally – on the continent. As a bonus, Risk Europe gives players a fascinating look into (more or less) what Germany looked like in the centuries prior to its 19th century unification. What is now Germany once contained kingdom upon kingdom. Which explains a lot, if you consider the variety of cultures, dialects and differences that exist within Germany. Scythe This game uses 1920s intrawar Europe as inspiration. In it, players must use every strategic asset they have to survive and thrive. A relatively new arrival to the board game scene, Scythe also takes a bit of time to master. But it is a wonderful game once you know what you’re doing, and the artwork is beautiful. Scythe also provides a great amount of insight into recent European history (even though the game itself is set in a fantasy realm called “Europa”).

SkillsUSA Regional Championships go virtual Story and photos by Ken Robinson SkillsUSA European Regional Lead

AFCEA Chapter 158 hosted their first virtual SkillsUSA European Regional Championship event. The competition took place over the course of four weeks. Students from six high schools were invited to participate in nine Career and Technical Education (CTE) competitions. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the contests were held virtually and ranged in length from four weeks (engineering) to a one-day showdown (cybersecurity), having most contests take place over a 2 ½ week period. SkillsUSA is the largest nonprofit national education association of its kind offering quality educational experiences for students in leadership, citizenship, and character development. Serving more than 400,000 members, SkillsUSA is committed to producing the most highly skilled workforce in the world through both education programs and competitions. AFCEA Chapter 158 supports the SkillsUSA vision by hosting the annual NY State Region VII (European) championships. Chapter 158 recruits local professionals to develop rigorous, industry-relevant CTE challenges designed to help raise the level of workforce readiness and reduce the current skills gap. Additionally, it is AFCEA chapter 158 who provides all the funding and cash prizes for the event.
