Family Fun: 10 tips for extending the egg hunt by Lisa Helenius Contributing writer Is it eggs-tra difficult for you to plan an eggs-traordinary Easter for your kids this year? The community egg hunts aren’t happening. Church activities are limited. How can you help your kids feel egg-static about their egg hunt? More importantly, how can you egg-stend the time to keep everyone occupied? Here are 10 great ways to use those plastic eggs to your advantage. (Notice I refrained from saying egg-vantage? You’re welcome!)

1)

Stretch out a toy gift! Giving your kiddo a puzzle? Let them do a bonus egg hunt by searching for each piece one at a time. Simply place one puzzle piece inside each egg and let the hunting begin! The same can be done for Lego, Lego Duplo or Playmobil kits!

2)

Matching colors (for the little bunnies in your house) When a child finds one egg, you can fill it with confetti of a different color. Then, your child will search for that new color. It makes a festive mess, but it keeps the fun going!

3)

Taste test! Hide a single jelly bean in each plastic egg. Have your child hunt for the eggs, eat the jelly bean and guess the flavor. It helps to keep a visual chart handy for reference! Keep score to see who guesses the most correctly!

4)

Scavenger Hunt Plant clues inside the eggs. Then it’s up to the children to find a clue inside one egg that will lead them to the next. You can get very sneaky for the older kids – think riddles, like “Play with me on a hot day or use me to give the grass a drink” (garden hose) or simple for the little kids “Rub-a-dub-dub!” (bathtub). You can find lots of printable scavenger hunt clues online.

5)

Ninja Challenge Each egg contains a ninja task. Examples for indoors: “commando crawl” under the coffee table, or “jump from the ottoman to the couch.” Examples for outdoors: “walk on the curb without falling off,” “log roll on the grass from one side of the yard to the other,” or “do a cartwheel,” etc.

6)

Body Builders Each egg contains a fun fitness challenge. Examples: balance on your right foot for 10 seconds, do 20 jumping jacks, crab walk to the bedroom, etc.

7)

Charades Put a picture or a word inside each egg. Your child has to act out that thing. For example: a dog, a bird, brushing your teeth, throwing a ball, etc. If a member of the family guesses it, they get to pick the next egg.

8)

Nature hunt After the main hunt is over, send the kids outside and have them create a hunt for the adults. They have to put a small piece of nature in each egg and the adults have to open each egg and guess what it is/ where it came from. Examples: sand, blades of grass, gravel, leaves, seeds, twigs, etc.

9)

Hot and Cold Hide a single egg with a special surprise inside. Your child moves around the room and you give them cues if they are getting warmer, colder, hot, etc. until they find the prize egg!

10)

Egg Relay Race Put your Easter basket on one side of the yard or room. Give your child a spoon and a pile of eggs. They have to balance the egg and go as fast as they can to deposit it in the basket, then run back to the pile. Younger children will need a larger spoon. Older kids can be challenged with a smaller spoon. Author’s profile: Lisa is a practicing occupational therapist with 25 years of pediatric experience. Outdoor activities unlock normalcy during lockdown

by Aaron Grogg Contributing writer No question, the last year-and-change has been unique. And understandably, some feel trapped, or at least limited regarding things to do. While we certainly are limited, there are still a great number of activities to help fight these feelings, entertain ourselves, and try to retain some sense of normalcy.

Regardless of what you do and where you do it, always take precaution and plan ahead: • Bring a mask and, if possible, hand sanitizer or wipes. You never know if you might need it, and it is best to be prepared. • Regardless of whether restaurants are open in your town, they may not be everywhere. So pack food and water, just in case. • Check travel restrictions before you leave home, both where you live, and where you are going. Things change frequently, and can vary by state, region and city. • The German Ministry of the Interior offers the following in English: https://www.bmi.bund.de/SharedDocs/ faqs/EN/topics/civil-protection/ coronavirus/coronavirus-faqs.html • For region-specific information for Germany, scroll down to “Current information about restrictions according to the respective federal states”: https://www.germany.travel/ en/information-on-coronavirus.html Remember, while these times may be challenging, hopefully soon we will get back to normal. In the meantime, focus on what we can still do. Have fun, and stay safe!

Gardening

Whether you have a yard or enjoy apartment living, taking care of a few plants can bring peace and joy, as well as provide time for a little meditation. If you have outdoor space, you can plant flowers or herbs, or add a bird bath and feeder (or two). If you lack outdoor space, either a windowsill or a small table that can see a window will work, too! Maybe an orchid or a Bonzai plant can be your muse? Most lawn and garden stores remain open, only requiring a mask and distancing. You can also shop online and have seeds, bulbs, and even plants delivered to your door.

Asparagus season: Delicious spring dishes Veal Steak topped with Asparagus, smothered in Hollandaise Sauce served with

Melted Tomatoes & Carrots Vichy Ingredients (for 4 people)

• 4 veal steaks, seasoned with salt and white pepper • 1 tablespoon ghee or butter • 12 stalks green asparagus • 1 small box of Hollandaise sauce For Carrots Vichy • 8 medium sized carrots, • peeled and finely sliced • 1 bottle of mineral water • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon sugar • ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper For Melted Tomatoes • 4 medium sized tomatoes • 1 finely diced shallot • 1 cup of broth • 2 teaspoons raspberry vinegar • ½ tablespoon butter

1. For melted tomatoes, remove the stalk inside and place in boiling water, while preparing an ice water bath. When the skin starts to roll up on the edge of the tomatoes, remove from boiling water and put in ice water. Remove the remaining skin with your fingers. Let tomatoes rest as you prepare the green asparagus by boiling for two to three minutes. Remove and put in water bath. Peel with fingers after they have cooled. Then brown in a pan with butter. Cover with lid as you prepare the meat. 2. Tenderize veal steaks, then brown in butter. Roast on both sides for 2 minutes, then place them in an oven at 300 Fahrenheit for 6-8 minutes. 3. To prepare the carrots, let the butter melt in a pot. As it starts to bubble, add sugar and allow to caramelize. Add

carrots and seasoning. Add one bottle of mineral water and allow to simmer for 8-10 minutes. 4. To finish tomatoes, add butter to a pot and allow to melt, then add shallots. Before adding broth, allow shallots to get glassy. Then add tomatoes and raspberry vinegar. Allow to simmer on low heat with a lid for 6-7 minutes. 5. On oven safe serving plates, build your steak with 3 stalks of asparagus and approximately 1-2 tablespoons of Hollandaise sauce on top of the asparagus, in the center of the plate. Broil in oven on top rack until the Hollandaise sauce gets a nice brown color. 6. Portion out tomatoes and carrots for 4 plates. Place the tomatoes on one side of the plate and the carrots on the other side. Leave the veal in the center.

Asparagus wrapped in

Kraeuterflaedle (herb pancakes) and Ham Ingredients

(for 4 people) • 2.5 pounds asparagus • 1.5 pounds potatoes • 8 six-inch slices boiled ham • 2 cups flour • ½ cup chopped fresh parsley • Salt, ground white pepper and nutmeg to taste • ½ teaspoon lime juice • ½ teaspoon sugar • 2 eggs • 1 ½ cup water • 3 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons margarine

Asparagus: 1. Peel the asparagus. 2. Prepare the boiling water by adding 1 ½ teaspoons salt, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ground white pepper, ½ teaspoons sugar, 1 tablespoon butter and lime juice to 3 quarts of water. 3. Boil the water with the asparagus peels and the parts of the asparagus that you cut off because they were at the bottom of the stalk. This is a great way to get some additional flavor from the peels before throwing them away. Let it boil ½ hour. 4. Remove the peels and add peeled asparagus to the same water. Let it boil for 10 minutes and then reduce heat to simmer for 45 minutes.

Kraeuterflaedle: 5. Mix flour, water and two eggs to make a runny dough. Add parsley, ground white pepper, nutmeg and salt to taste. Heat margarine in a non-stick 8-inch pan. Pour a thin layer of dough over the entire pan. Cook on both sides for 2-3 minutes. Remove from pan and place in a pre-heated oven at 170 F. Repeat until you have 8 Kraeuterflaedle. 6. Heat a 10-inch non-stick pan. Add 1 tablespoon butter. Heat the 4 slices of ham on both sides for 2 minutes, just long enough for them to get a little brown and you can smell the ham. Remove to oven and brown the remaining 4 slices. 7. Once done, roll the asparagus and ham up in the Kraeuterflaedle. Hollandaise sauce is the perfect topping. Get it pre-made at your local grocery store on the economy. Just warm it slightly in a pan and drizzle over the top of your creation. You will have a nice summer meal to enjoy on your back patio! 8. Serve with a green salad with a light dressing.

r_speed o _f d e e _n e h <Feeling_t _think} u o _y n a h _t r close by Bret Helenius Contributing writer Everyone who gets behind the wheel for the first time, whether they realize it or not, has an emotional reaction to the power of “going.” Whether you were a metal-mouthed teenager driving a beater or learning to drive late in life, the feeling you got when you stepped on the gas pedal for the first time (even if you were going 15 mph) is one you won’t soon forget. Take that feeling and put it on steroids, and you may understand why fans from all over the world flock to the famous Nürburgring, just a couple hours’ drive from the Kaiserslautern area. I am not referring to the championship races and awesome viewing events like the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) that are held there, but to an opportunity we don’t have back in the U.S.: the chance to actually drive on the world’s most famous racetrack...yourself! Imagine if you got to drive the Indianapolis Speedway or Talladega. Such experiences may exist in some form, but are extremely expensive and are usually under tight restrictions. The world famous Nürburgring, however, is technically considered a two-lane highway (kind of like the Autobahn), so there are times you can just drive on it. This requires a fee of about 25-35€ per lap, depending on the day. But it’s totally worth it.

Here’s what you need to know Ways to get on the track »» Drive Your Own Car On “Track Days” »» Rent a car from a local company and go with a pro instructor »» Take a ride in a supercar called a “Ring Taxi” »» Make it a group event Drive your own car I have taken my own cars on the track. These weren’t anything too crazy –namely, a VW Golf GTI, a BMW M3 and a Fiat Abarth 500 SS. Each time I took my own car on the track, there was part of me that was relaxed because if I crashed, I knew it was my car (and not someone else’s) that would need to be repaired. The part of me that was not relaxed was the one that knew that if I crashed my car, I would have to explain to my wife why I had to repair it after driving on a race track. The experience was a blast! I rolled up right next to Ferraris, Porsches, minivans and Mini Coopers on the Nordschleife (this is the part of the track that is open to the public as opposed to the “Grand Prix” track). What a rush! Technically, however, there is no racing on the ring. So when someone comes up from behind, put on your right blinker and stay to the right so they can blow past. During my first lap, I got passed by a Corvette Z06 like I was standing still, only to see that car get passed by a Porsche GT3 RS like they were standing still! Rent a car from a local company One of the benefits of renting a car

from one of the local motorsport companies is that you get to drive a fully maintained track-ready car. You also get the rules of the road and, if anything happens (buy the extra insurance), it isn’t your car! I rented a BMW M4 with ApexNürburg (they can be found at ApexNuerburg.com, and they have multiple rental options), and opted to hire Misha, a professional driver/instructor. It was a good move. Having 430 horsepower just a gas pedal away was a bit more power than I was used to, and having Misha there to tell me how to deal with it was well worth the money. I must say, the experience was totally different having a professional next to me making corrections and keeping me alert of possible issues (that can come up fast). Having Misha there made it more fun than stressful. I was able to concentrate on driving the track instead of worrying about the rules of the road or doing something risky. Of course, accidents can happen, but that is true of any drive you take. Take a ride in a supercar called a “Ring-Taxi” Most of us will never own a supercar like a McLaren or a Ferrari. If you love supercars, and if you had the opportunity to actually ride in one, I would suggest you go for it! I was lucky enough to get a “Ring-Taxi” (what Apex-Nürburg calls a pro-driven supercar while you are in the passenger seat) in a Ferrari 458 Spider, McLaren 620 R and a special 4-seater BMW M3 tuned by Schirmer. I can only say this: if you have never felt the exhilaration of going into a turn at 160 kph (over 100

mph) only to launch into a straightaway at speeds upwards of 200 kph (approximately 120 mph), then you need to try it. It was amazing how the car (and incredible driver) was able to handle the turns and braking at such high speeds with no problem. It actually gave me a taste of what a real race might feel like. The special 4-seater BMW M3 (which essentially is a race car) was really fun because there were three of us as passengers (all with special racing seats and helmets) connected by microphone. Make it a group event Great experiences are always better with other people, so we made a company event of our day on the Nürburgring. Everyone got to ride in the “Ring-Taxi” during the day, which was fun to experience together in the 4-seater BMW M3. There were also a few of us who drove some of their rental cars, and we ended the day with an awesome lunch at the Lindner Hotel, which is part of the main facility at the ring. The food was excellent and the surroundings were fitted with race memorabilia, driving video games and a great bar to boot. We reflected on the day and the new stories we had just written at the ring. It was not an experience I shall soon forget.

Trackdays: Visit nuerburgring.de for available dates. Getting there: From Kaiserslautern, take A62 to A1, then take the exit for Ulmen and follow B257 to Nürburg. Insurance note: Standard car insurance normally covers accidents on the Nürburgring because it is considered a regular road. However, you should contact your insurance company first to confirm. COVID Note: Contact any company you may work with ahead of time to find out the latest COVID protocols and hours of operation. Apex-Nürburg has signs up outside regarding protocols, plus they disinfect all surfaces in their offices every day. They offer contactless payments as well. Cars are sprayed and wiped with disinfectant after every rental. Staff members wear gloves when they help you in and out of cars.

At the beginning of lockdown last March, the world seemed to burst into excitement at the prospect of wearing sweatpants to work, baking banana bread and whipping coffee. Those days are long behind us now and the past year has gradually wrapped us all in a grey veil of pandemic fatigue. Despite plans to reopen public establishments bit by bit, it is very likely that we’re still looking at months of reduced social interactions. And once we do go back to a life similar to the one we used to know, this unprecedented time will have inevitably shaped the way we view the world and ourselves. What the past year has proven is that hobbies can be incredibly useful in helping us to cope with uncertainty. During the past 12 months, I tried to learn 3 new languages (French, Swedish, Gaelic), started embroidering pet bandanas with Gilmore Girls quotes and learned how to differentiate eagles from the ground without binoculars, to name a few new hobbies of mine. Despite knowing that all these distractions were crucial in getting me through the COVID hurricane, I’d like to believe I have learned a valuable lesson: hobbies are meant to be for yourself only, and that knowledge will keep me entertained, occupied and sane for a very long time. Before you ask yourself what you like to do, remember that hobbies are not about productivity and do not need to be based on your talents. You don’t need to turn them into a business.

Picking up new hobbies You don’t even need to be good at them. Love knitting but don’t want to deal with the headache of figuring out cutting patterns to make a cardigan? Feel free to knit 40 straight scarves, never straying from one design, never adding a different color. Love watercolors but can’t get the different layers of mountains right? Paint for the sake of painting and not to open your own gallery. Hobbies are for you. Ask yourself if there was something that used to interest you when you were younger but that you lost touch with as the responsibilities of adulthood lured you into the false belief that only things society considers productive are worth your time. Read a book that may be considered lowbrow, that you may have been telling yourself is a waste of time, just to remember what it’s like to thoroughly enjoy a book and read for fun, not necessarily for knowledge. If you want to learn something new, you have lots of options. Listen to a podcast, for instance, about a topic you’ve never done any research on and immerse yourself in this new subject area. This can be anything from Arctic vehicles to what flowers can grow in the desert. Take advantage of the major progress the virtual world has made over the last year. Traveling was the hardest thing to give up for me but I found great ways to stay in touch with the countries and cities I was meant to visit in 2020. You can join a virtual whisky tasting in the Highlands of Scotland, roam the Guggenheim in New York City or learn Japanese in Tokyo without ever leaving your bed. Take a cooking

class for every cuisine imaginable or simply buy a cookbook and cook your way through it on your own terms. Turn your dining room into a French café, pop a fireplace on YouTube on your TV and pretend you’re in a Swiss lodge. Dress up in the outfit you thought you’d wear in London and stroll along your nearest shopping street. The power of imagination can turn the Main river into a Venetian canal. If you bring some Stroop Waffles for a picnic, it turns into a Dutch park. (Check out Rheinland-Pfalz Army MWR - Kaiserslautern on facebook for great virtual events, tastings and more.) Consider adding yoga, running or exercising with youtube or online instructors to your daily routine and you will greatly benefit from this for the rest of your life. Remember that meditation is not just useful when you’re feeling stuck like you may be now: it has a preventative effect as well and there are many free and affordable apps to help you get started. Lastly, don’t feel bad if you didn’t pick up any new hobbies and don’t want to either. Lockdown has been different for everyone and there is no use in comparing yourself to others who started a family, a business, or a popular TikTok account. This pandemic has brought out a new need for combined selfishness and selflessness. Look out for others by staying home whenever you can but put yourself first and don’t beat yourself up about not having changed out of your pajamas in a week or Netflix telling you you’ve watched every show released in the last 30 years. It’s okay. You’re doing amazing.

Traveling in the time of COVID-19: 3 tips

Give camping a go Camping has made a huge comeback, for many good reasons: you can choose how far away you want to be from the next person or group, you are almost always out in fresh air and you wake up to a spectacular view of your own choosing. Since wild camping is illegal in Germany, you can either rent an RV, pitch a tent at a campsite or get a ‘glamping’ (glamor camping) pod if you want to stay in the country. If you’re willing to travel a bit further for complete privacy and freedom, many of Germany’s neighboring countries welcome wild campers as long as you leave no trace. This includes Scandinavia, France, Spain, Estonia and Poland. In the rest of Europe, you risk being fined. Avoid crowds The one thing to avoid are crowds, especially indoors. Cities tend to be crowded enough, so opting for smaller towns, which are often far more picturesque anyway, can take some of the pressure off busy city centers. Avoiding public transportation can also have a huge impact on your own safety as well as that of

Hotels: what to know If you choose to stay at a hotel, all of which follow rigorous cleaning and safety protocols, the most important thing you can do to ensure they can remain open is to stick to the rules. Wear your mask in shared spaces, stick to allocated slots at in-house restaurants or spas, and avoid single-night stays at numerous accommodations. Self-catering cottages, apartments and houses are your best, safest and coziest options. Browse through Airbnb.com, Fewo-direkt. de and booking.com for holiday rentals all over the country. These are great options for finding places that suit your preferences. Whether you’re looking for some “Vitamin Sea,” spectacular hikes in the mountains or gloomy mornings in the forest, they cater to absolutely any type of accommodation you can dream of. This way, the unforgettable part of your grand European adventure will be the memories!

others. Planes, trains and boats are less ideal than traveling in your own vehicle. Also, you live in Germany! So your convenient location, in terms of driving distance to so many beautiful places, makes it easier to opt for your car instead. Taking the scenic route has countless perks as well. You will see much more of your European home away from home. The same goes for restaurants, so sticking to takeout or cooking yourself may be a good idea for a while. You can still support local establishments and you’ll get to know the regional cuisine even better by preparing it yourself.

Carlos Cerde no

Remember last February, when COVID-19 was a little flu in other parts of the world? Ah yes, good old times. Remember making plans for the summer, writing bucket lists, booking holidays? The Netherlands for tulip blossom, Côte d’Azur in the summer, visiting family in the fall and relaxing at an Austrian mountain lodge towards the end of the year? Not to mention the city trips on the weekends with the love of my life (Ryanair), direct connections on a crowded TGV to Paris and driving down to have Swiss cheese fondue for dinner in Switzerland? Ah, the sweet pain of remembering all that we lost. Germany is a fantastic place for traveling, long and short distance, and I’m sure you can’t wait to get back on the road, perhaps even for the first time since moving here. As restrictions are eased, we dare to be cautiously optimistic about the future of travel. But there is no doubt that things are going to look a little different from what we’ve known and expected. Even though vaccines are slowly making the rounds, we are still a long way from herd immunity and the vaccines’ effects on mutations and transmission numbers are yet to be determined. It is therefore hard to predict the full scope of possibilities, even if you’re vaccinated yourself, so it’s best to prepare for limited options rather than having to cancel as you may have had to last March. The fresh air renaissance has brought about a variety of trends, which are as safe as one can get during a global pandemic. A reconnection with nature may have seemed or even felt performative at the start but it is the undefeated sanity saver

during these “unprecedented times” and whether you implemented a walk or gardening into your daily routine or stocked up on camping gear, the power of the outdoors shall not be underestimated ever again. So it comes as no surprise that outdoor-centric vacations are not just your safest options but also great for your mind and your innate desire to feel at one with the earth. As summer approaches, here are three key travel tips to consider.

In any given village, you can find bakeries, butcher shops, florists, ice cream shops and at least one good gasthaus that serves phenomenal schnitzel. For those who live here, Germany is also an amazing place to be a tourist. It’s packed with history, culture and

wonderful day trip opportunities. Even more, it possesses a number of world-class forests, mountains, museums, castles, vineyards and monuments that attract visitors from all over the world. But if you can’t travel, you can try the next best thing: virtual tours! Here are five classic German destinations that offer top-notch virtual experiences. And once you’re able to get out there, put these places at the top of your In-Real-Life list.

Brandenburg Gate The Brandenburg Gate is an enduring symbol of Germany’s struggle for unity, which stretches back from the 19th century to modern times. But it is also a testament to the peace that can be achieved through unity. Located in the heart of Berlin, near the German parliament building, the Brandenburg Gate is an elegant, classic and beautiful monument. The virtual tour does it justice. Take the virtual tour: https://cyark.org/projects/brandenburg-gate/virtualtour

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Located near the border between the German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemburg, Rothenburg is a postcard dream. Famous the world over for cute streets, adorable buildings, outstanding Christmas market and medieval city walls, this village is often at the top of tourist lists. Get a great taste of what it’s like to be there by using the 360-degree controls in the virtual tour video.

Deutsches Museum, Munich In all honesty, it’s probably best to take the virtual tour first. Because the Deutsches Museum is so massive that it can get overwhelming quickly. But as one of the best science and technology museums in the world, it also offers a testament to the power of innovation, engineering and invention. Discover all sorts of awesome stuff that ranges from old school (transportation) to cutting edge (nanotechnology) to downright cool (cryptography).

Neuschwanstein Castle King Ludwig’s very expensive castle on the hill is one of the most famous monuments in the world. When you visit Neuschwanstein in person, one of the highlights is walking upward toward the massive place. Virtual tourists get a wonderfully different perspective, however: a bird’s eye view of the castle and the surrounding area. Take the virtual tour: https://www.airpano.com/360photo/ Neuschwanstein-Germany-Virtual-Tour/

Berchtesgaden In person, Berchtesgaden is fantastic. Located in the German Alps near the Austrian border, it is home to a national park, thick forests, towering granite peaks and tons of natural playgrounds for visitors of all ages. Incredibly, however, the virtual tour offers something that you won’t find by visiting in real life. You’ll feel like you’re standing on the tallest peak there, and have the power to fly like an eagle to see something at close range. You definitely have to try it.

Bonus: Black Forest Motorcycle Tour Even if you’re not a motorcyclist, it’s a pretty excellent experience to feel like you’re cruising narrow Black Forest roads. Watch at least the first two minutes of this strangely calming video. You’ll get a great taste for what it’s like to drive through Germany’s most famous forest. And it may just bring inspire dreams of open roads.

The other

6 reasons for Americans to the Bundesliga

love

by Nate Cairney Contributing writer

:

For sports fans living in Germany, life can seem, well, not quite the same. Time zones make it tough to keep up with the NFL, NBA or college sports in real time. The ocean that

1. You can root for Americans… as underdogs. This may be the most refreshing thing of all: American men’s players are sports underdogs in Germany! This never happens in the U.S. Pro leagues are stuffed with American players. LeBron, Pat Mahomes and Tom Brady are all

global household names. “Football” means “the NFL,” full stop. But in Europe, the tables are turned. Sports superstars here are named Messi, Ronaldo, and Mbappe. “Football” equals “soccer.” Household names seem to come from every country except the U.S. However, the Bundesliga features a number of fun, young, American players who are beginning to change that. John Brooks anchors Wolfsburg’s defense. Josh Sargent is a striker for Werder Bremen and has started nearly every game this season. Gio Reyna is a winger for powerhouse club Borussia Dortmund, and is only 18 years old! Watch these guys – and others like Tyler Adams or Matthew Hoppe – play. You’ll quickly become a fan.

Graphics by Vikpit, wanpatsorn / Shutterstock.com

2. The Bundesliga launches the careers of U.S. soccer stars. Related to number 1: many of the American players who are on the way to global soccer stardom got their start in Germany. Christian Pulisic, who plays as an attacker for superclub Chelsea in the English Premier League, got his start at Dortmund. Weston McKennie, who scores incredible goals alongside Cristiano Ronaldo

separates Europe and North America makes it really difficult to actually go to games (even if this weren’t the COVID era). If, however, you are among the 10% or so of Americans whose favorite sport is soccer, then you probably know how good you have it. Europe is a

soccer mecca, and features the top leagues, clubs and players in the world. For those who aren’t soccer fans, but who are willing to give the sport a try, there is no better place to do so than Germany. Here are 6 reasons to help persuade you.

for Italian powerhouse Juventus Turin, cut his teeth at Schalke. Both are only 22 years old, and will be around for a long time to come. It’s awesome to watch U.S. players take the next step.

5. Relegation and promotion provide real drama.

3. German clubs care about their fans. Seriously, they do. The Bundesliga is unique in the professional sports universe because club fans actually have a say in who owns the club. Okay. Stop laughing. It’s true. Part of what governs the Bundesliga is something known as the “50+1 rule.” Essentially, this means that pro sports clubs can’t sell a majority ownership stake to huge commercial investors. As a result, the club itself generally gets to be the majority owner, which means that the wishes of fans take priority over commercialization or profit incentives. Bottom line: it creates conditions for passionate fans and clubs that take them seriously. For Americans in Germany, this is a chance to witness that passion. So start by finding a U.S. player you like, and then adopt his team. It’s guaranteed to be entertaining.

4. Great teams are right where you live. You’re never farther than a couple of hours away from top German teams. Bayern Munich is one of the greatest clubs in the world. You can find teams in Stuttgart, Mainz and Frankfurt. When travel restrictions lift and live matchdays resume, buy (very reasonably priced) tickets to see one of these teams in action. Even if you don’t totally understand the game yet, the energy and noise are a blast to behold.

Like almost every other professional soccer league in the world, the Bundesliga uses a system of relegation and promotion. This gives teams an incentive not to tank, because the two worst teams in any given season are “relegated” to a lower division league (in this case, the 2.Bundesliga). Consequently, the two best teams from the second division are “promoted” upward. So fans can have hope every season. It also means a ton of drama as the season’s end nears and teams fight to avoid relegation.

6. There is a strong women’s Bundesliga. It’s hard to find U.S. women’s pro players in Germany. This isn’t a negative thing, though. The U.S. Women’s National Team is the undisputed global women’s soccer powerhouse. We’ve won four World Cups! That said, Germany has won two women’s World Cups (to go along with the four that the men have won). So the quality of play in the Frauen-Bundesliga is excellent, and the matches are well worth your time.

Disposing of larger items in Germany By FindItGuide.com During your PCS, you may come to the realization that you no longer want to transport old or unused items around the world. It is always hard letting go, but some of the larger items should be easier to say goodbye to. Your old mattress, for example, may have its best days behind it. That washing machine you have hauled around might be on its last legs. The next question is what to do with it if you no longer need it! What is considered bulky waste? These are items that do not fit into your normal garbage cans: • Furniture • Lamps

• • • • •

Cupboards/wardrobes Carpets Shelves Tables Chairs

For these items, there usually is a street collection multiple times a year, which varies from community to community. Talk to your German neighbor as it is a pretty good bet they will know when the scheduled pick up is also giving you a good reason to strike up a conversation! Some items require special disposal due to their weight, girth and components that may contain harmful materials. You can often get free pick-up ser-

vice by contacting the company that is responsible for picking up your regular garbage. If you are a renter, your landlord may be able to help you contact the right organization. Below is a list of items that would need special pick-up coordination.

• Dishwashers • Washing machines

Large Electric Appliances • Refrigerators • TVs • Stereo equipment • Computers

Other • Paint • Lacquer • Solvents • Fluorescents

Small Electric Appliances • Toasters • Irons • Coffee machines • Portable radios • Hairdryers

• • • • •

Energy saving light bulbs Alkaline solutions Acids Batteries Cleaning Agents

Remember not to just toss items in the trash if they are not normal everyday trash. There is likely a special way they need to be disposed of. Although it may be a little bit of an inconvenience, in the end, it will help keep your community clean and safe!

Easter traditions

Easter is a happy time. After a long winter, nature is finally in full bloom. Children are waiting for the Easter bunny. Employers usually manage to

combine their free days into a long weekend. School is out for at least a couple of days. In the Christian tradition, Easter is the finale of Lent season. Last but not least, it represents the end of spring cleaning. Needless to say, next to Christmas, Easter is

Germany’s most popular holiday. The multitudes of traditions associated with this day stem from Christian and heathen times but all evolve around the same idea: the rebirth of nature, the resurrection of Christ and the celebration of life itself. At the same time, copying nature’s spring beauty, people decorate their homes and gardens with adorned, dyed or ornamented eggs whose preparation is a popular family event. A great place to see this tradition at work is in the Franconian Swiss region in southeast Germany. There, many communities set up Easter wells with hundreds of colored eggs. While the original idea was to honor water for its gift of life, this has become a popular competition between the villages for the well with the highest number of eggs. The connection of eggs and Easter dates back to the Middle Ages. During the Lenten season, the church did not allow the consumption of eggs. As a consequence, great numbers of eggs were amassed in the weeks prior to Easter. During the festive days they were then used as means of payment, or little presents. Later, exchanging these little gifts became a popular custom between sweethearts. Apart from optical pleasure, Easter also meets the joy of eating, especially for any sweet tastes. Only Christmastime assortments can rival KAISERSLAUTERN

the wide range of sweets offered in the supermarkets during the Easter season. From little chocolates to handmade truffles, children and adults alike enjoy the contents of their Easter baskets. But there is even more when it comes to food. “Easter lamb” is one speciality that no longer consists of meat nowadays, but refers to a cake formed like the very animal. Other bakery products look like rabbits, roosters or hens. Another typical seasonal delight is sweet plaited milk bread nicely braided into an Easter wreath. So, even without religious intentions, it is wise to meet this season with some prior dieting. What would this time of year be without the leading character: the Easter bunny, which was first mentioned in the medical scripture “De ovis paschalibus,” about Easter eggs, by physician Georg Franck von Frankenau in 1682. German children believe that according to their behavior, the Easter bunny brings and hides eggs throughout the house. So, Easter Sunday usually starts with the children’s treasure hunt. Often enough, by the way, it ends with parents secretly counting the sweets to avoid finding melted chocolate remains later in summer. Apart from culinary delights, there are a few playful and competitive customs, too. In many rural areas, huge wood stacks are prepared, and on the evening of Easter Saturday, fires are

lit to cast out wintertime. Sometimes, this is also represented by straw figures that get burned. Often, the village men contend for the tallest fire. A speciality of the city of Lüdge in Westphalia is the “Easter Wheel,” where a burning oak wheel filled with straw rolls down a hill at night. “Ostereiertitschen,” the egg tapping game, is a popular competition among young people. Two players take hard-boiled eggs and hit them against another. The egg whose shell remains intact wins. “Ostereierschieben,” or egg rolling, has a tradition dating back 400 years to the East German city of Bautzen. On Easter Sunday, children of affluent families used to let eggs roll down the Protschenberg hill to be picked up by poor children. Nowadays, contestants use plastic balls and can win prizes. Finally, an almost mythical custom evolves around the “Easter water,” which dates back to ancient times. In this practice, young girls drink water from a spring in silence before the first rays of the sun hit them. The water is attributed healing influences and the gift of fertility. So, you can do a lot of things with eggs — rolling, tapping, painting, hiding. But no matter if you celebrate the resurrection of Christ or the rebirth of nature, Easter is a very popular time in Germany. Whether it is burning wheels or chocolate eggs, sacred water or Easter cakes, it is a time filled with joy and anticipation.

Grow your own food in small spaces by Allison Robins Contributing writer

With the increasing trend of growing your own food, there have never been so many resources for making the most of your time and money. But space is also a major consideration for those living in German apartments with only a porch or terrace. The good news is that you don’t need an Americansized backyard to grow your own food; all you need is a little planning. The most important consideration is what to plant. With a limited amount of space, it’s important to determine your reason for growing your own food. If your aim is to save money, remember you’ll save much more if you plant a more expensive and perishable herb (like cilantro) than if you plant an inexpensive vegetable (like potatoes). If you’re trying to go organic, consider which fruits and vegetables are most affected by pesticides (permeable surfaces like lettuce and herbs). Regardless of your goal, even if your primary motivation is just the excitement that comes from eating food you nurtured yourself, it’s essential to consider what types of fruits and vegetables grow well in your climate. In the somewhat temperate-humid climate of Rhineland-Pfalz, most vegetables will grow fairly well, though with a short growing season: carrots, onions, hardy varieties of tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins, peas, potatoes, garlic and more. In your small space, decide in advance how much square footage can be devoted to plants. For beginners, it’s usually better to start out small, selecting a few varieties that are easy to grow. Seed and seedling packaging, as well as Internet resources, indicate the separation distance needed between each plant, which will also help you determine how much produce your

space will yield. Also, recognize sunny and shady zones; tomatoes and peppers need lots of sun, while salad greens and broccoli can grow well with just three to six hours of sun per day. Although you can begin planting seeds indoors as early as February in the Pfalz, late starters can purchase seedlings (small plants), which can usually be planted outdoors immediately after last frost (likely April in the Kaiserslautern area), depending on the product. Be sure to check seed packages for recommended planting time. Pay attention to your plants. Water is absolutely essential, and some vegetables and herbs need to be checked daily for dryness. A good rule of thumb is if topsoil is dry more than one inch deep, the plant most likely needs water. Drainage is vital to plant health; always buy pots with holes in the bottom. Pruning is also a necessary part of growth and disease control. Tomato and other plants produce shooters that should be controlled to maximize efficient plant growth, and diseased sections in any plant should be removed before it spreads to the rest of the plant. To maximize vertical growth (great for small spaces) and avoid stem breakage, be sure to incorporate adequate support when planting seedlings. Use stakes, trellises, sticks, twist ties — anything to keep the plant from collapsing under a bountiful harvest. Vertical bean trellises are a great way to maximize small spaces. Depending on the quality of your soil, you may need to fertilize regularly to give plants necessary nutrients. Organic fertilizers are easy to find, not too expensive and quite

effective (“Bio Dünger” in German stores). An advantage to terrace and apartment gardening is fewer herbivores looking for a free meal, but pest control (organic or conventional) may still be necessary; many recipes are available online for homemade organic pesticides. With the right planning and attention, you can maximize your small space and enjoy growing your own food.

g n i k Hi by Azure Hall Contributing writer Hiking is an excellent way to enjoy the spring sunshine and get in some physical activity. Germany offers a plethora of hiking and walking trails for beginners and experienced hikers alike. A trail guide with Outdoor Recreation, located in the Ramstein KMCC, calls the area “rich with hiking and cycling opportunities.” Any one of these hikes would be a spring day well spent.

Ring Mauer This hike takes you from the Vogelweh Housing development out into the woods, leading you to the remains of an ancient Roman fort called Ring Mauer. To begin this trail, park within the Vogelweh Housing area; just be sure not to park within designated residential spots. Trail time is roughly four hours round-trip, or two hours each way. The trail is roughly 12 kilometers long and the route has sections that are both paved and unpaved.

Frankenstein Castle There are two Frankenstein castles in Germany, but this is the one closest to Ramstein – roughly one hour away. There is a designated parking lot at the base of the hill that provides access to the hiking trail. While it is unknown exactly which of the castles inspired the writing of Mary Shelley’s famous novel, it is known that the author spent time in many parts of Germany, especially along the Rhein River. These ruins are accessible via a short hike up the side of the mountain, roughly fifteen to twenty minutes each way. There are picnic areas nearby and a number of geological formations in the surrounding area. This hike is perfect for someone looking to get a little fresh air without devoting much time to a hike.

Wolfstein The destination for this hike is located a short distance away from Kaiserslautern, about a thirty-minute drive, in the village of Wolfstein. This quiet village offers a number of

public parking lots within walking distance of the trail. It is the first stage of the much longer Pfaelzer Hoehenweg, including but a small portion of the 100-kilometer-long trail. This hike is just under 12 kilometers long, looping around the town and making it a perfect hike for a day trip. The hike ends with a spectacular view of two separate castle ruins.

The Palatinate Forest Trail Any portion of this 143-kilometer-long trail would make for an excellent hike. The trail offers views of spectacular crags, deep valleys, undisturbed countryside and verdant forests. There are a number of parking areas, depending on what entry spot you choose. Along the way, hikers can stop at the sustainability house, Haus der Nachhaltigkeit, in Johanniskreuz, to learn more about preserving nature and the surrounding area. The Drachenfels Ruins and the Berwartstein Castle, Germany’s only remaining currently occupied castle, are both along this route. The trail is broken into nine stages, any of which can be hiked individually or as a longer multistage hike.

Volksmarches Our trail guide recommends that hikers just starting out opt for a Volksmarch- style hike, wherein you hike with a group along a predetermined trail. There are a number of Volksmarching groups in and around Kaiserslautern for those interested in joining. When participating in any physical activity, hiking included, safety and preparation are of the utmost importance. Our guide recommends “bringing plenty of water and planning for changes in weather. In Germany, a sunny day can quickly turn to showers and hikers should know that before hitting the trails.” Additionally, it is important to know where you are going. “German trails are well marked,” says our guide, “but it is still a good idea to know the route you’re taking.” Doing a little research before heading out can mean the difference between a pleasant day of outdoor activity and being lost in the woods.

Online games:

A great way to stay in touch with family

There’s no doubt about it: the pandemic has changed everyone’s lives around the world. With less freedom to visit your loved ones back home or even to visit friends locally, it is easy to lose touch with people. Sure, there are ten apps on your phone that can instantly connect you via video with someone 6,000 miles away. But there are often some relationships that are better to cultivate (or are easier to foster) through an activity. In the past, that may have included going to have a meal, or playing a game of catch or checkers. Those

Jackbox Games

What you need to get started: • Computer with video conferencing capability • Good internet connection (50 MB download speed is sufficient) • Smartphone • Number of players: 2-8 (but some have additional audience participation) Cost: These are sold as individual games, “Party Packs” or “Bundles.” Prices for each game start from $6.99 and go up from there. “Party Packs” start at $9.99. Once games are purchased, players do not pay for participating. All prices listed are based on the U.S. store. URL: Jackboxgames.com

How it works: There are a host of multiplayer games with Jackbox that work through your video call software (like Zoom or Google Hangouts), with some involving your smartphone as a controller. One person (who they call the “VIP”) will be required to establish an account and purchase the game(s). Once the game has been decided, all players go to a website where a “Room Code” will be required to enter (which your “VIP” will supply you with).

activities, which previously may not have seemed particularly significant, are now sorely missed. But all is not lost. With online and Zoom culture taking over business and personal life, a number of fun games have popped up that allow you to make or deepen connections with the person on the other end of the device. Loads of non face-toface games have also become popular.

Here are a number of ways to stay connected to people you miss in a fun way.

Depending on what game you are playing, commands and results will be on your computer and your entries to challenges will be done through your smartphone.

Don’t miss:

One of the best Jackboxgames is “Quiplash,” which is a game of “wits and wittiness.” Each group is given a statement or question which requires each player to enter a response into their smartphone. Once everyone answers, the group will vote on the best (and sometimes most ridiculous) anonymous answers. Through a number of rounds, points are awarded. In the end, a champion is crowned. Recently, family all over the world had a blast with this game and all the nutty answers. What is also great is you can hear and see everyone’s reactions while you are playing. Other great Jackbox titles include Fibbage XL, Drawful and Blather ‘Round.

How it works: Chess dates back almost 1,500 years, with the earliest mention of it coming from India. The classic game has seen recent popularity, with a number of online playing options available. Chess.com is easy to find, hassle-free options and an easy interface on tablet, phone or computer. Connecting with your friends and family is easy and only requires them to create an account, where they can be searched for when you want to challenge them for a game. Since you may be in different timezones (and have differing amounts of free time) choosing the style of play is quite flexible. The main parameter to choose is the “Game Clock.” This defines how long your opponent has before they must make their next move. You can choose a certain number of minutes for a speedy game or go with a more slowpaced game that allows three days (or more if you like) between moves. Playing will also provide you with an official rating, so when you don’t have someone to play against, just put yourself out there to the worldwide

community and find someone who has a similar ability level. You can also take online lessons from the pros, watch videos of the greats playing and more.

Scavenger Hunt

(Kid Friendly!) What you need to get started: • Computer or smartphone • Video conferencing (Zoom, Google Hangouts or other) • Mobile data or home internet connection • Number of players: 2+ Cost: Free  URL: none How it works: With a game of Scavenger Hunt, you only need your video conferencing account, a leader and a number of scavengers. The host simply calls out an item the scavengers need to hunt for around the house. Points can be given for how quickly the scavenger locates the items, with the game going multiple rounds. In the end, a champion can be crowned (or not, to minimize the cry-factor).
